RB’s – Current depth chart and needs

Jordan Howard – 6’0 224

Ryan Fitzpatrick – 6’2 228

Kalen Ballage – 6’2 231

Myles Gaskin – 5’10 200

Patrick Laird – 6’0 205

De’Lance Turner – 5’11 214

Samaje Perine – 5’11 240

That’s a big stable of running backs in more ways than one, and of course I’m joking about the guy 2nd on the depth chart. Leaving out said QB, these are mostly bigger backs with the exceptions of Gaskin and Laird, all above 220 lbs. The reality is some of the guys on this depth chart won’t be here once the season begins if they even get that far. I think Gaskin and Laird could be keepers and Ballage may get another shot after a very disappointing season where he had ample opportunity to make some hay, starting in 6 games but just couldn’t get anything positive going, either rushing or receiving. I had hoped we had David Johnson lite, but even on the receiving side Ballage was a major letdown.

Jordan Howard signed a 2 year deal and he’s the type of back that wears down a defense. He will be valuable to close out a game in the 4th QTR by keeping drives going and punishing defenses, aptly named “The Bulldozer”. I have to believe that we will be active in the draft to find another quality back and there are a few that should be available beginning with our third first round pick (#26). D’andre Swift, Jonathan Taylor, J.K. Dobbins, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire round out the top 5. I will be surprised if none of these guys end up in a Dolphins uniform.

So free agency began in earnest for the Miami Dolphins and our name consistently flashed on the screen from the start. We made a lot of noise, gave out a few big contracts, but in general filled out a lot of holes and most definitely upped the talent level here and acquired some heady players as well. Kyle Van Noy in particular is a guy who has tortured us twice a year in a Patriots uniform serves to make us better and weaken the Patriots in one swift cut. On a down note, the Patriots will recoup yet another valuable compensatory pick, but if Van Noy can bring that production and locker room presence to some younger guys it will be worth it in spades.

I know you all know who we’ve acquired, probably better than I do, but I like to see it in print, it makes me feel happy. Here are all of our recent acquisitions and the contracts.

CB Byron Jones – 5YR/$82.5M

LB Kyle Van Noy – 4YR/$51M

DE/LB Shaq Lawson – 3YR/$30M

OG Ereck Flowers – 3YR/$30M

DE Emmanuel Ogbah – 2YR/$15M

RB Jordan Howard – 2YR/$10M

S Clayton Fejedelem – 3YR/$8.55M

C Ted Karras – 1YR/$4M

LB Kamu Grugier-Hill – 1YR/$3M

S Adrian Colbert – 1YR/$1.775M

We also signed former Patriots LB Elandon Roberts but the terms of the contract are not yet final. Fejedelem, Clobert and Roberts are all special teams guys and the new guys (Fejedelem and Roberts) lay the wood. All in all, I think we have shored up certain areas but there are still a few glaring holes such as OT, QB, RB, C (for competition this season and beyond). Another good DT/DE could also elevate our defense and safety is still an issue despite the Fejedelem and Colbert signings. The good thing is our approach in free agency has afforded us some flexibility going into the draft where we have excellent draft capital to make the most of our picks. I’m really looking forward to it.

  42. Phindog's avatar Phindog says:

Miami trades back out of # 5 for Jaguar’s #9 and #20 first round picks along with their first round pick in 2021. Build the trenches with four 1sts this year and grab your QB in 2021 with 3 firsts.

  43. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    It was more like this

  44. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Why trade back? 14 picks, three 1st, two 2nd and a pick in every round with 9. Use the picks to add players now. WTF are we backloading for? Two 1st and two 2nd with a mostly full draft in 2021 still isn’t enough?

  45. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

  46. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Karras has committed only eight penalties in his last 85 games.

  47. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

In his final six games – including the postseason – Karras’ individual game pass blocking grades checked in at: 85.3, 83.9, 84.9, 80.4, 63.9, and 84.9. His worst game was against Miami.

Over those six games, Karras was PFF’s No. 2 ranked pass-blocking center behind only three-time Pro-Bowler Rodney Hudson.

For the entire 2019 season, Karras allowed just 14 pressures. Of those 14 pressures, only three resulted in hits on the quarterback, giving Karras a sterling .005 QB hit allowed rate.

  48. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Flowers never allowed more than three pressures in a game last season and committed only one foul from Week 6 to the end of the year.

  49. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

With just four plays resulting in a hit on the quarterback form the left guard position, Flowers is in rarified air. Just one other guard, who had more than 500 pass blocking snaps, allowed fewer QB hits than Flowers (Dallas’ four-time All-Pro Zack Martin).

  50. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

With a 97.6 pass blocking efficiency (PFF), and a 92 percent pass blocking win rate (ESPN’s Next Gen Stats), Flowers was one of 13 guards to play more than 500 pass blocking snaps and allow two or fewer sacks in 2019.

  51. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

His two sacks allowed equate to a .003 percent sack rate, and the four total QB hits makes up an impressive .006 hit rate on those 588 pass blocking reps.

  52. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

This is what i was saying the other day:
“Opposing quarterbacks mostly left Jones alone, as he was targeted a mere 13.0% percent of pass attempts last season.”

  56. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Naples – I’m sure the NE coaching staff is fine (all kidding aside) but I think mostly the reason that NE gets penalized less is a level of respect given to Bill Belichick and his players not unlike the same superstar treatment Lebron James or any NBA superstar gets where they drive down the lane and anyone who looks at them aggressively gets a foul called on them and Lebron can pull someone’s head off and the headless guy would be called for a flagrant foul charging with his head. Not all that different from when Shula was here and the Dolphins were always one of the least penalized teams.

  57. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

A lot of talk how miami wants to give a boat load of picks to move up and get burrow. I sure hope we dont do that. If you wanted burrow you should have tanked.

  58. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I dont think cincy would do that. I think the ownership of the bengals cares more about how much they will make vs winning. They would not want to pay 3 1st rnd picks

  59. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I’m not a huge fan of trading away a ton of high picks for any one player. But, part of the strategy of accumulating a shit ton of picks is that it allows you to kind of lessen the pain in a trade like that. Personally, I don’t think Burrow is a better prospect than Tua, if healthy, so I wouldn’t do it. If they do, so be it. It won’t be the end of the world. We just won’t have anybody to keep our shiny new toy upright. Lol
    ***
I also don’t think QB is a MUST get this year. I’d prefer it, but I’d prefer to do it with one pick. There will be more “can’t miss” prospects coming every year. The only caveat is what I’ve always said: The best time to go after a QB in the draft is when you already have a pretty high draft pick because it minimizes the pain of having to go get one. This may hopefully be the last year for awhile that we pick in the top 5. I really hope we keep all or most of our high picks and just build this team. We need a lot and trading away multiple high picks isn’t gonna help us build. We have 11 1-3 round picks in the next two years, I think. That gives you some freedom to do pretty much whatever you want.

  60. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Falcons sign Gurley to a 1YR deal

  61. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Gurley is another example of why I’d shy away from drafting a RB in the first round. The value just isn’t there as you can get high end production from lower rounds, and the risk is really high with that position.

  62. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I definitely feel that, when your team gets a high draft pick, it should max out that opportunity.
Usually this means drafting a superstar franchise QB. Which Miami is in dire need of.
Moreover, our #5 is not our only pick. So we would not be blowing the whole draft by using it on a QB.

    Another thing —
If we don’t take a QB early this year, it means we will be getting 3 first rounders plus other good players, which, combined with our great haul in FA, might propel us to a draft pick about # 20 or even higher next year.

This would DEVALUE our native 2021 pick. However, we do have another one from the Dumbest HC in the league. Thus, we would still have 2 1’s and could pkg those with a first rounder in 2022 if it took that to get Trevor (or whomever) so I feel there is no need to panic this year and cash in all our great picks for a QB.

Especially since we have Fitz (and former first rounder Rosen) and again, would be building up all other position groups by not “wasting” even one pick on QB.

  63. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I’m glad we did not freak and sign Gurley.

I think DeAndre Swift however is worth a first,
    even after signinig Jordan howard.
    (only because we have 3)
because I predict a longer career for him than Dobbins or Taylor,
whom I would NOT take in the first.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

RB have generally short careers anyway. Chances are slim that this regime signs a RB to a high end second contract.

  64. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

As the dust settles on FA then
the obvious need is for a “Franchise blind-side OT”
and there are several good ones this year.

This is also a great year for WRs,
thus Wilson could become a cap casualty in favor of a shiny new toy.
    such as Ruggs or Jeudy.

  66. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

RB’s get hurt and you pretty much need at least 3-4 good backs so I have no problem taking a RB at the end of the 1st.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      exactly
Why not get a great one,
ride him for 3-5, then discard him
      and draft another great one,
      because rooks are relatively cheap,

Why get a mid rounder? (see Ballage)
or a late rounder (see Laird and Gaskins)

      They suck for 3-5,
so your ground game sucks for 3-5.

      • D's avatar D says:

What ya get in earlier rounds is a back that fits most systems, he’s likely a plung and play guy. Anthing in rounds 4 on, and 3 on in shallower drafts are guys who are either niche type players, not intended to be an every down back or a player that might not appeal to everyone but for your system fits like a glove. So yeah you can get a great RB later in the draft, but he’s a 50/50 at best, and he’s probably only 50/50 for the intentions you wanted him for.

My personal target spot for drafting a RB you want as a starter, and will likely give you 3-4 good years is middle of round 2. Good value in that draft spot and most likely not too far off any RB that goes in the first unless they are transcendent players like Zeke, Gurley, Barkley, etc.

  67. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

D – Normally I would say RD2 or later but having 3 first rounders gives us the luxury to take a player in RD1 that will almost certainly be gone by our 2nd RD pick, especially if we really like that player

    • D's avatar D says:

If he is BPA sure. I dont think Swift is on the level of those other guys, but id be ok with taking him in the first, it would just depend on the board and who is still there. Im guessing we would have to use 18 on him, probably wouldn’t make it to 26, but im also thinking there might be a better player still there at 18. Id also be just as happy with Taylor, Edwards-Helaire, Dobbins, Moss, etc so im pretty sure out top second gets us one of those guys maybe even our second second.

    • D's avatar D says:

its a numbers game, just gotta play your research and make your decisions as you go based on those.

  68. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I love running backs and I hate how disposable they’ve become in the nfl

But you can draft RBs in the 2nd or 3rd round every few years and get better value than signing high priced ones or drafting them with top 10 picks

Todd Gurley, who is a beast, is a good example of buyers remorse

I’m not going to shed a tear if we take a RB at 26, but it makes a lot more sense to me to look at that position a little later

    • D's avatar D says:

incidentally, do you see the contract he signed with the Falcons, ridiculously cheap.

      • D's avatar D says:

I would not have passed on signing him for that contract.

      • D's avatar D says:

He may have chosen the Falcons because we already had Howard though, eaiser chance to be “the man” there.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think signing Howard is what ended up getting him released. I would have taken Gurley over Howard any day of the week

But I think the rams viewed us as potential trade partners until we signed Howard

  69. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    You are all correct.
I do think it’s much riskier to take a RB early if that is your only first rounder that year.

I’m just so sick of having an anemic rush game. I know that is partly due to having marshmallow blockers,
but it is so great to have a guy who can change a game with a long sprint out of the backfield.

  70. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

It’s odd that the official website has us only signing 3 of the 9 guys that have been noted as going to us. Jones, Karras, and Flowers.

  72. New Age's avatar New Age says:

The NFL has a value system that is pretty hard to dismiss based off decades of game evidence. First round RBs aren’t really worth more than later round RBs especially with their short game life and the 5 year first contract. You really don’t need to invest too much or too long. Not even digging too far back to guys like Terrell Davis, we have James White, Kamara, Breida, Singletary, Conner, Hunt, Miller, Lindsay, and our newest guy Howard. All 3rd round or later

Teams that invest in early round RBs always waste their money. The Rams, Cowboys, and eventually the Giants.since they won;t be good before they have to pay Barkley. RBs are so dependent on a good OL, even more than QB. OL, defense, QB, and even to a lesser degree WRs are much better gamble. I like Swift and don’t mind him in the 26 spot but only because we have three 1st rounders. I’d never waste a 1st round pick on RB normally.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s pretty much what we’re saying, but keep in mind Kamara is a specialty back, he gets almost as many touches receiving as he does rushing, he’s not a workhouse like Zeke or Saquon. Howard hasn’t been a big carry guy either, but certainly more than Kamara or Singletary. I think Singletary is more like Kamara, not a heavy lifter. Guys like Derrick Henry, Saquon and Zeke can carry a game.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

        LOL – workhorse

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Specialty backs are a better prospect than workhorses though. Look at the pinnacle of specialty backs in Christian McCaffrey. Guy is smaller than Kamara, and a taller, leaner version of Singletary. You can get the work out of these guys and have so much flexibility. Paying big for any of the guys you mentioned is a huge waste of money and it’s one reason Tennessee doesn’t want to do it with Henry.

  73. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    We have too many picks.
I don’t know what we will do with all these picks.
All we need is a LT, a FS, maybe a back-up TE.
We have everything else filled now.

    That’s 3 guys.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      ITS NEVER ENOUGH!!!!

      Greedy 🐷

      We need a RT too

We need a lot of guys to groom under vets

And you can never have too many DBs

I do think we can probably use some of those day 3 picks to move up a little on day 2

  74. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    New Age
But how do we actually FIND one of those later guys.
Ajayi, Damien, Mostert, we tried these guys and they did not amount to anything.

  75. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Moving to QB, I’d use three 1sts on Burrow or even two 1sts and two 2nds. A supposedly elite QB brings that much value. QBs last longer than any other position besides K and LS. QBs affect the game more than anyone else. New QBs are the best value in the NFL and building a team around a rookie contract QB is the easiest and most successful formula in the NFL.

I don’t think Cincy lets us rob them, but it’s definitely worth it. With Tu’a the risk really counters him a bit but someone will still probably take him early. Maybe get another weaker prospect this draft but there is ZERO chance we get the #1 QB next year. This is by far our best chance since Matt Ryan, which was a huge mistake on our part. Unless Rosen proved something Flores didn’t show outwardly at all last year, we need a QB this draft.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

While what you say is true, if you saw the other day I illustrated that the first QB taken in the last 6 drafts hasn’t been the best of the lot. Now many things factor into that too but just going by that data at face value, it doesn’t bode well for Burrow,

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

There are really a lot of factors. I think Burrow meets all of them. He’s the best prospect since Luck, one of the best in the past 25 years. He dominated with the hardest overall schedule in college football. His ability to lead and move around the pocket were off the charts. He’s nowhere near perfect and he needs a really good QB coach (don’t they all), but he has no true negatives. You have to nitpick on hand size and arm strength to find anything. Cincy will not let him go but I wish they would. With Flores at the helm, I’d bet on our chances of a SB attempt within 4 years with a high likelihood of a win. That’s worth a few picks and I think Zac Taylor isn’t good enough to get the most out of Burrow.

If drafted here, Burrow would be our next great QB. It’s been too long.

  76. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

New Age – It’s a complicated discussion. McCaffrey is NOT a specialty back, he had more carries last year than Jordan Howard ever did, approaching the heavy workload of the 3 previous mentioned backs. In addition, he had a ridiculous 116 receptions. He won’t be able to maintain that each year, he will burn out. What I was trying to say is you need to have a stable of backs regardless, but it’s nice to have a guy you know can give 20-25 carries in a game if you need to grind it. Most of those guys are taken early in the draft

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

McCaffrey was also taken in the 1st RD at pick #8, so . . .

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I agree. Size and draft position doesn’t matter though. OL does. Dalvin Cook, 210 lbs, 250 carry back. Chris Carson, 7th round pick, 5th in carries at 278.

You can find a RB anywhere, any size, and they can get the job done. Get the OL, pick a dude you like, hopefully later than 1st round, and move on to more impactful positions.

  77. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    New Age,
I agree with a lot of your post. I have just started questioning how important it is to get your guy right now. It seems we have more and more high end QB prospects coming out now. There seems to be at least 1 and possibly several each year now. I also wanna get one as soon as possible, but I do think you can consider continuing to build a team to support him if you really don’t see the value in giving up a bunch of high picks for a guy. Sure, IF he pans out, nobody remembers or cares how much it took to get him. If he doesn’t, it can hamstring your franchise for a decade.
    ***
I like Burrow. I would not be surprised if he becomes a solid player, but with that said, he had one year of high end play. If that’s enough for somebody to be convinced, great. But, i also understand someone who says he hasn’t shown enough yet. I’ll be happy either way. Lol

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

It’s definitely a chicken and egg argument for sure on the right now part. You are exactly right about hamstringing your franchise especially with all that built up capital. While many can say it’s the best time with the extra capital, it also looks far worse when you could have multiple studs in a draft. We can have a good playoff team this year even if we miss on a few picks this draft and don’t select a single QB. That’s how much we’ve accumulated especially with the new playoff rules. As a terrible franchise the past two decades, I don’t blame anyone for just wanting to get back in with a solid team. It’s a great idea.

Everyone always remember the guy you didn’t pick no matter what the circumstances so using up multiple high picks for just one guy on a 53 man team seems crazy, I know. I didn’t like the trade ups for RGKnee, Goff, Allen, etc. and Knee was one of my favorite QB prospects in ages. The trade was too much. I did like the Jets trading up for Darnold, even though I don;t especially like him. I also loved the trade up for Mahomes. Both trades were fair value in my book and not excessively expensive based draft position.

With all that said, Burrow is the best prospect I’ve seen in a while and I watched every game. He’s definitely a one year wonder and Brady did fantastic work with him. But that is one of his selling points to me. He turned everything around with just a little good training. His feet are fantastic. He already can feel a pass rush better than Tannehill ever will. We both know Tanny’s weaknesses. He’s willing to run and good at it but it’s not the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd option usually. He uses progressions really well for a college QB. He’s smart and very accurate. He enjoys destroying the competition and is a film junkie. I see no true flaws in his game. I loved the way they dominated and never gave up. Clemson looked in the driver’s seat for a short while that final game. Joe never wavered and they ended up pouring it on in the second half. Tua nor Lawrence can say that. Lawrence was terrible in the second half with two elite WRs. Tu’a was terrible the year before when Clemson came in to pound their ass.

  78. Randy's avatar Randy says:

The NFL has been transitioning to a multi back approach for awhile now. Teams can afford 3 guys with almost as much talent as one guy and pay all three less than it costs to have the one superstar. Plus, it gives you more guys who actually contribute that also do your STs…instead of one guy who probably doesn’t even play ST. Defenses are now going to more of a rotational pass rush. Offenses are doing the same at RB, and it makes your offense more multidimensional too. Substitution has become a major part of managing your team. Remember when you really only saw substitutions on 3rd down, and it was 1 or 2 guys? Now it’s 5 guys every down. Lol

  81. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Drafting a RB in the 1st round isn’t the problem, you can have them for 5 years with the option. It’s the big contract if they become elite that’s the stinger.

Spending a high pick on a player that’s almost guaranteed to leave at the end of their contract isn’t ideal

    Case in point:
    value of the OL

Everybody knows Trevor Lawrence does not suck.
    So what happened?
Clemson had a veteran OL with 4 seniors.
All have entered the draft as probable UDFAs but one.

They were not able to prevent LSU from shutting down the running lanes
even though Clemson had an All America RB in Etienne
nor keep LSU from choking the passing game,
in spite of Trevor Lawrence and all those great WRs.

It’s the OL versus the DL. That’s football.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

True to a point. Lawrence looked terrible and Burrow looked amazing. Clemson is full of upper tier talent and Burrow crushed his biggest test of his career. Clemson is loaded and has been for a while. They dominated a loaded OSU team the week before after getting into a huge hole early. They are just that talented.

The problem with Clemson is they played no one all year and LSU played a ton of good teams. Good teams they crushed with Burrow. No one played a tougher schedule and LSU could have won the championship 49-25 if they wanted. It was a clinic on the absolute destruction of your opponent….the second best team in football.
