Miami Dolphins 2020 Schedule

So the schedule is out, and as per usghe, speculation and wild predictions ensue. I’ll be perfectly honest, I have no idea what in the heck to expect from this season, and not just from a Dolphins perspective. Rookies are learning from video chats rather than person to person instruction. As far as that’s concerned, I believe these kids should be fine in that regard, this is how they live their lives, this will not be shocking or difficult for them, they will learn just fine this way. The difficult part will be not physically practicing, because camps won’t open until it’s deemed safe enough for ALL of the 32 teams to be able to open, which is completely fair. This is a league built on parity after all.

This year one of the schedule highlights is playing against the NFC West. That is a rough division, headlined by the SB runner-ups, the SF 49ers. Every team in that division brings a different but similar challenge. The 49ers and Rams are built very much alike, strong defense, and run the ball effectively, don’t ask to much from your QB. The Seahawks have Russell Wilson and despite what plan they have, they always seem to lean on Wilson too much, even with their multi-headed RB attack, which by the way is again similar to the 49ers. The Arizona Cardinals bring a unique challenge with QB Kyler Murray, who is a true dual threat QB. The Cardinals acquired All Pro WR DeAndre Hopkins from the Texans and in the draft, snagged LB Isaiah Simmons, two players who should have a huge impact on their team.

Of course we play our division twice each, and while the Patriots look ready to fall off, you can never count out Bill Belichick, even without Tom Brady. Who knows, maybe Stidham is ready to run that offense more effectively than the nearly 43 YO Brady. The Jets and Bills are both improving and will be looked at to challenge for the AFC East crown. Will we be there with them or they will they be chasing us, or will we once again fail to even hit the .500 mark? I love what we accomplished in free agency with Van Noy, Ogbah, Lawson, Roberts, and our entire draft haul, which was quite good, that’s a whole lot of new pieces moving together. We did what we had to do to fill spots but unfortunately COVID-19 is going to hamper us because we do have so many new people, far more than any other team in our division and likely the entire NFL. We just Chip Foose’d our roster, Overhauled it! With a minimal amount of practice that our players will probably have, that’s unfortunately a huge disadvantage compared to a team that possibly added 3-4 new starters. We could have potentially 10 new starters (Jackson, Flowers, Karras, Hunt, Howard, Lawson, Van Noy, Ogbah, Jones, Igbinoghene, Ferguson), plus add in a big mix of rotation guys that are new as well. If you compare that to a team that has the same moving parts except for a very small few, you have to give them a leg up at least early on in the season due to familiarity.

All I know is, whatever form and whatever length, whether it’s a shortened 14 game season or a full 16 game season, I have never looked forward to watching this team as much as I do this season. I think there might be some growing pains, but I expect a steady improvement as the season moves on. It’s going to be exciting folks, whether Tua starts or not. You all know I don’t think we should rush Tua in, but whatever they decide I’m in 100%. I’m just being cautious, and we have a good situation with Fitzpatrick to be cautious. On the other hand, if there’s not one medical reason to keep Tua off the field and he shows he’s better than Fitz for our team from the get-go, than I’m down! No matter what, there’s a whole lotta guys I’m aching to see in action this season!

GO DOLPHINS!!

Tua was the best QB in this draft when it came down to an electrifying skill set, Burrow is right up there, and maybe a better A-Typical kind of QB but not as dynamicly great as Tua has potential for. Watch how he throws ont he run, watch how he changes the arm angles when he throws, those are really natural instinct kinda things and makes him dangerous inside and outside of the pocket.

Again, ill say it for what i feel is the 1800th time, if they can coach him to be a safe player, we got the best QB from this draft class, the only concern is if his gamer mentality, his desire to get the most out of every down, overrides ” live to play another down” safety decisions.

Thats said, Fitz does all the higher level QB things, his ints are a product of his confidence, and i think he’s probably a little too smart for his own good. He has the ability to make those throws, but a lot of the ones that get picked are perfect scenario throws, ie he could make those, but minor deviations in the receivers route or a perfect timed jump by the Db is all that separates that play from either being a long gainer/TD and an int and he takes the throw because he has confidence in himself and the receiver. Anyone that throws like that is unfortunately going to be just off from time to time and thats an int. Make no doubt about it Fitz is more Farve than Smith, and probably if he had just a little more athletic ability, he’d be right more times than wrong, where as sometimes in his career he has looked at best as a break even guy.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t agree, when Fitz is bad he’s really bad, and when he’s bad he throws horrible ints. The slight miss ints can happen to anyone, but when he throws those he’s usually having a good game and shakes them off.

His bad games seem to happen, when he’s out of rhythm, because something the D has done to get him off his game like the first 2 games last year. The games we lost we mostly got crushed.

  2. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We scored 11 pts a game the first 7, 25 the last 9, and 29 in wins.

First 7 Flores was trying to overcone the lack of talent and fend off the mutiny, last 9 he had them playing like a team, but were still overmatched in losses to Buff, NYG, and Clev due to lack of talent.

    • D's avatar D says:

What i saw last year is all i had hoped for an a little more. I wanted to see us playing like a team even if the outcome was a loss i wanted to see the team putting together something that didnt look like pure chaos on the field, and identity of some sort. We did that plus some. I was really happy with last year despite the record. Gase never had the team playing like a team really, even in his most successful year.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t think any of us can complain about last years product, after week 7.

I give them a pass for the 1st 7 weeks, because of what they’ve done since (final 9 and the offseason moves/draft).

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Sometimes shipping off the mutineer (I’m this case Minkah) works

These guys had cart balance to look at the roster and give a lot of young’s guys a chance to set themselves apart

      And they did that

I think that’s an ideal situation for a 1st year head coach

But imo the next step is competing for a playoff spot
And if you get to that next step
The step after that is continuing to get into the postseason

I think both jumps are big jumps
But, no more Tom Brady in our division has made it easier than ever

Taking the next step won’t be easy

He was our only RB last year that showed anything, after Drake left, but he had his chance and hasn’t learn from past assholeness, so… wasn’t Walton one of the characters in Ballers😉

Charges being dropped vs. Mark Walton is great news for him. He was a Brian Flores favorite. Coach loved him more than anyone knows. Hope he gets one more chance somewhere. But he’ll have zero room for error this time.

    Random Dolphins schedule nugget:

The Dolphins have hosted the Patriots in December or January 9 times during Bill Belichick’s tenure. Miami is 7-2 in those games. The Dolphins are currently scheduled to host NE on 12/20 this season.

    All hands on deck!

Got a call from Tim the ticket guy. And he wants our group seat reserve ASAP. Real funny cause of what Garfinkle said, but Tim called that “Plan B”. And also said might have tix if in the 15,000 situation.

So we need to pick a game quick as we can. I only asked about my favorite….. Chargers. And was just $45 for the kinda seats we have had for the last 2 years. Absolutely no obligation (not even on me)….. but we need to pick a date.

Let’s come to a date right quick fellas. The poll is up there (thanks to whoever did that), but talk too.

  7. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Lol, Dolphins might, just be trying to up the price.

The New York Jets are also in the mix for Logan Ryan, so it may be possible that the Dolphins are just trying to up the price.

However, it wouldn’t be a shock if coach Brian Flores wanted to bring in another piece to provide even more flexibility on defense. Flores often mentions how important flexibility is to game planning on a week-by-week basis.

Stanger – That’s cool, and probably optimistic that they’re selling group tickets. I’m in though, I voted for the Chargers game, that seems like the best choice time wise. We can take it as it comes with whether or not we’ll be able to do it or not

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

He did say on “Plan B” that 12k would go to season tix holders and 3k to groups. Wasn’t real confident on his info….. but then someone up top said “lock them down.” Minimum group is 20 though….. we’d have to hit that.

    —————————————————–
Im not a stat guy, i think they show part of the truth, i just didnt think he looked great, he is a hard nosed runner no doubt, but i like Howard over him by a lot. I dont see the need to bring him back. Too many other option out there that are just as good if not better. I mean we can add depth in the RB group for as cheap as he was signed for. I just dont think he justifies the risk of him coming back and giving him yet another chance. There comes a point where you just walk away and most people who are givin the chances he has, as significantly better on the field.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

How could any back look great behind that line?

You just need to see something, anything to warrant another look, and he was the only one tgatvdid for me.

I’d personally just have Perry as our 3rd RB, 4th, if Cox is listed as RB and not FB.

I think it depends a lot on the next couple of weeks. Most people are either opening up on the 15th or the next Monday the 18th, basically removing the social distancing rules, and my guess if we get through 2 weeks after that without the numbers jumping back up, we might be ahead of things. Still it worries me that if we could just wait maybe a few more weeks, we could be down to the 10’s of thousands of new cases a week instead of still being in the 20’s and it would be much better. I dont like this, and i know they feel pushed to because of the economy but you gotta think longer term, if they shit flares back up we will be in a worse place than before.

No doubt thats true, but again, im looking at it as inspecting terds in a bowl and thinking one is better than the others because its still got some corn in it and that makes its nutritional value higher, i mean come on if you had something other to choose from, are you still choosing that terd for the one kernel of corn?

It should be fun watching how the OL shakes out over the year. We have a lot of guys and I don’t think anybody has a sure lock on anything by the end of the season. It would be nice to start with a 5 and go with them all year, but it’s probably more likely we see a lot if different 5s over the year. I’m actually looking forward to it, but it might be ugly.

  29. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Point taken. I think we saw some improvement as the year went along…but we certainly have a long way to go. A new offense. Almost a whole new OL….with many young/new players. Possibly a new QB playing somewhere along the line. Should be interesting. This really isn’t the year you wanna go without a PS.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I get that but I side with going with the best talent regardless of age. I’ve said that I feel the defense will be ahead of the offense. The thing I’ve heard about Gailey though is his offense isn’t really that complex, it’s a pretty much a do your job offense. When you look at the Pats offense over the years, what’s so complex about it? They simply execute even though they obviously had a seasoned QB in Brady running it, but they won with backup QBs too.

It’s not like these young players were in a box and just opened, it’s still football. LOL

Lots of rookies play right away. Unless they are definitely not ready, play the young guys so they get the NFL seasoning and can hit the ground running in 2021.

    M13, what’s going on with Julie’n Davenport?
    —————–
Hey, Tim. I was just mentioning that a colleague at my work is very close friends with Julie’n Davenport. Upon training him on his first day, my colleague and I obviously took the time to get to know one another. When I told him I was a HUGE Miami Dolphins fan, he told me his good friend plays Left Tackle for them (this was before this past Draft). I said Julie’n Davenport??? He said YES, THAT’S MY DAWG! I thought to myself “here we go…”, but he wasn’t joking: they became close friends at Bucknell University.

He pulled his phone out of his pocket and immediately showed me about a dozen pics of he and Julie’n together in street clothes. He even flew to Miami last year to watch Julie’n play and took a couple of pictures with him in uniform after the game. The pictures are fairly comical, being my colleague is about 5’8″ and Julie’n stands at 6’7″.

Anyway, I’ve never met someone who had direct connect to one of our players and thought it was pretty cool. Contingent upon our work schedules and this whole COVID-19 ordeal, we might fly down to Miami to catch a game this year… we’ll see what happens.

    Small world!

  31. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think Julie’n will be around this season. He was a raw player coming out, so he may still be improving. At worst he’s a decent depth player that can play either T position.

  33. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, what do you think of our offseason?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

LOVED IT. First time in seemingly forever that I liked each and every move. The only thing that I wish we’d addressed? DW (Defensive Weapon). You know, someone to replace what Minkah brought to the table. I felt as though Kyle Dugger would have been perfect… but then so did Belicheat*, who snatched him up very early and we never had a shot at.

Absolutely LOVED that we reinforced the trenches on both side of the LOS, particularly on the O-Line (thank you, Chris Grier).

On a scale from 1-100, I’d rate our offseason about a 97… and that’s coming from a very harsh critic (you’ve known me for about a decade now). I see the vision, I see the unity between GM and HC, and I’d say we’re on the cusp of becoming great again.

Tua can redshirt for a year learning from a real grey beard, our WR room is loaded with talent, O-Line is tight, and I feel the steal of the Draft was the trade for Matt Breida. Our LB room is loaded with talent, our D-Line looks quite solid, and our DB room is SICK.

How about you, Tim? What did you think of our offseason?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think our defense has a chance to be badass. We’re already so much better getting X and McCain back, adding Byron Jones, Lawson, Ogbah, Van Noy and others in FA who add top level STs value.

Then we drafted all 3 phases including a potential franchise QB in Tua who we were supposed to tank for to get the #1 pick, and we get him anyway at #5.

I kind of feel like whatever the curse was… it’s over. We shall see. 🙂

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Upper deck nice! I don’t know why anyone, without a disability, would prefer sitting in the lower bowl. Upper deck is always better for football.

      • D's avatar D says:

Depends, i have had seats damn near at the field and yearh, while its a different perspective, you still see the full 22 view from the jumbo-tron and you get to see the plays from the field perspective too which i find neat. It feels most like actually being involved IMO. There are also a lot of sights and sounds you get from down there ya dont from way up.

      • D's avatar D says:

Still 45 buncks vs what i paid for those seats, is a steal lol.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

steve it’s debatable…. but never been a Fest anywhere other than the 300s. And like D said…. real nice price.

      • D's avatar D says:

Well the Fest is a family thing, and its a gathering of people thing, the closer to the field you get the more of that you lose and the more its not cost effective for those bringing families and such. I think for what it is, thats the best way to do it. If it was a minor gathering, like a couple to 3 guys who just wanted to catch a game together, id say should try for a field level game some time, its a real different experience, but i think for a smaller more intimate group of people, not a bunch.

That’s probably right in line with the Vegas amount of wins for us, but I think we could be an 8-8 team for sure.
    —————————————————-
Again, it really doesnt matter to me the record we end up with as long as there is progress made. I do think though, this team should be 8-8 +/- 1. I feel comfortable thinking would could finish 7-9 and 9-7 and it be exactly the season we hoped for. Feels wierd not saying i expect more, and more would be nice, but i think we finish 7-9 and we really played games competitively, im good with that kind of 2nd year progress.

LOL, well yes i knew that he did that, but i thought he more specifically said “let there be shade……for my people” lol. Ah man thats cush, i have walked stadiums, like some college ones and damn by the time ya get up there, you feel like you spent the last half hour mountain climbing. I think college staduims are the worst about that, hell and a lot of college stadiums hold more people so you are usually at the mercy of how fast/able the person in front of you is at climbing.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Is what it is. And these seats would be a just fine set-up if goes down like before. Not our very best, but far from our worst either. Remember the two in the corner at the back years? About the cheapest though.

Asked about what if they go to the 15k plan. He said you might be OK. But don’t think he really knew other than 3k would be there for groups. Guessing Bokampers might have seats though. 🙂

He was emphatic that heck yeah we are gonna play this year. Hope that wasn’t just a sales pitch.

Hey Rocko – What’s that apostrophe in Julie’n Davenports name called?

    …………….um…………….an apostrophe.

It is not and a l’accent aigu. It is just a dumb ass ghetto accent.

It is an African accent like K’Lavon Chaisson it is not found in the ENGLISH or FRENCH languages. Just added by parents of color to be different.

steve it’s debatable…. but never been a Fest anywhere other than the 300s. And like D said…. real nice price.

The first couple of Fests the seats were in the 400 section. Before they reconfigured the seats the year before they put the cover on.

There was not 300 section. (I always thought that was odd when I had season tickets) 100’s, 200’s and 400’s No 300’s. (again before the renovation)

  52. D's avatar D says:

I think when its used like that for Julie’n its supposed to be a pause before the rest of the word, so instead of it being Julian, its julie n. I dunno though because if its a full ghetto context, the rules are just whatever the fuck they came up with at the time lol. I have seen pronunciations that its physically not possible to have created those sounds combining those letters that way.

I would have voted for Nov 1, and yes Ken, you should bring your wife. She doesn’t have to hang at all. There’s plenty of ways to celebrate your anniversary in other cities and combo his/hers events in the whatever city were pretty cool with Mrs. K and I. Just a thought.

    ————————————————
I see why they are saying that but, Ogbah and Lawson are also built like 3-4 DE’s so they could play in either scheme. I dont think that we necessaruily box ourselves in to any one scheme thats not at all what Flores seemed like he wanted to do in year one. I mean they have the ameoba, and several other, pretty much anti-standard formation defensive looks they gave, so i thinkt hats the beauty of it, we dont know and like the other OC’s and HC’s wont have a real good clue either.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Obviously we aren’t going to box ourselves into one scheme, the point was just more 4-3.

Before last year Flores mentioned we’d use 3-4 or 4-3 base depending on opponent. This year they can do that.

Whats even more fun about this new thing, is they often identify as creatures that aren’t even real like Elves and Dragons, lol.

That means at the core of this is a really serious issue with a person who is so unhappy with who they are. You cant escape you and your own self loathing, thats a band aid and just kicking the can down the road.
