WR Corps suffer legitimate depth issues with 2 COVID-19 opt outs

Many of you here didn’t really value the services of one Allen Hurns, and maybe I’m on the side of overrating him, but Hurns was on target to be the starter opposite DeVante Parker at least into training camp. If Preston Williams proved he was healthy and battle ready then it’s possible Hurns slipped down the depth chart as he was replaced by the younger, more explosive Williams. IN any case, Hurns was a veteran receiver with AFC experience and one that thrived playing opposite a very talented receiver in Allen Robinson in Jacksonville. Never as much of a big play threat as Robinson, Hurns was a steady, reliable , professional possession receiver. Albert Wilson looked like he was almost all the way back last season, especially towards the end of the season. The last 3 games he caught 17 passes which is nearly half of his season’s production of 41 receptions. He had the lowest YPC average of his career at 8.1 and only one TD but the hip injury that cut his 2019 season short really took its toll on the receiver as he finally worked his way back. I do recall seeing a couple of plays at the end of the year where his explosiveness resembled the player of 2019 where he was turning nothing into something big routinely.

Before the opt outs, I felt like we had a very strong WR room with serious depth and a nice mix of youth and veterans. Parker is 27, Wilson 28 and Allen Hurns 28, along with young up and comers like Preston Williams (23), Gary Jennings (23), Isaiah Ford (24), Malcolm Perry (23) and Jakeem Grant who is now 27. If Preston Williams is ready he takes Hurns spot on the outside opposite Parker. Which receiver or receivers get to thrive in the slot? Jakeem Grant will be in the running as will Gary Jennings and 7th RD draftee Malcolm Perry. Grant has the speed and explosiveness Wilson had but not the size, Grant (5’6 171) is about 25 lbs lighter and doesn’t have the run power to break tackles like Wilson did. Gary Jennings is a little less speedy and explosive but has good size at 6’1 216. Jennings ran a 4.42 at the combine and put up 20 reps so he has some upper body strength. Malcolm Perry is closest size wise and elusiveness to Wilson but doesn’t have the top speed that Wilson had. Perry ran 4.63 40 at the combine. If you watch Perry play though, he always looks fast enough and is a very slippery runner. The Dolphins signed Colts WR Chester Rogers to a 1YR deal which deepens the depth a little. Rogers caught 53 passes in 2018, just 16 last year playing behind WR Zach Pascal.

The biggest concern I have about our WR’s, or really any unit on our team is the depth. If we’ve learned anything by watching MLB, NBA or NHL in 2020 in the year of COVID-19 is that players drop like flies. One second they’re on the team and the next they’re on COVID-19 protocol. Add in the usual NFL injuries, especially considering this year with a huge lack of practices and no preseason games and you will likely see how important good depth will be. I’d even question whether the league will be able to play a full season. We’re going to have to count on a bunch of our deeper depth players this season and I hope we get them all ready for action. When Chan Gailey was with the Jets in 2015-2016, he utilized Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker mostly, with a decent amount of passing to the RB’s Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell. In 2016 Decker was gone after 3 games and replaced by Quincy Enunwa and the offense didn’t really feature a slot WR much. Robby Anderson provided the deep threat on the outside and again, the RB’s, now Matt Forte and Bilal Powell caught a bunch of passes. Jordan Howard isn’t much of a pass catcher but Matt Breida is a good receiver out of the backfield who was stifled by playing time in a 3 headed attack in SF with Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman and also CJ Beathard. Malcolm Perry may also get some use out of the backfield and Kalen Ballage was thought to be a good receiver although he didn’t get to show any of those skills here in MIA. Patrick Laird and Kenyan Drake caught the most passes at RB. In any case, one thing we’ll probably have to get used to in 2020 is NEXT MAN UP . . .

I thought Parker had a pretty good season in 2016…not necessarily the stats…..I don’t remember them anyway…but how he played. I was encouraged. He played physical and used his athleticism and size to make plays. He started playing more like that again last year on a consistent basis. If he can stay away from injury and keep playing that way, I think he can be a pretty good WR. When you play physical, injuries can happen. It’s good to hear that he’s fit and ready to bang.

The impact of he and, say, Preston backing the defense off would be an awesome asset to our running game with a bunch of big slobber knockers up front. It’s been a decade or more since we’ve seen that.

People always overreact when players aren’t on the practice field, but the handling of Preston is pretty standard for returning injured players.

Sometimes a new offense can make the QB think while on the field, making him look a little sluggish or off, but the media will always let you know, like yesterday🤔

  7. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Sometimes I think either the Fansided guys just don’t think or are retarded. Their main guy is so arrogant I want to punch him.

On safeties being former CBs and smaller:

Gone are the players that can help support the run. Just ask Bobby McCain, who busted his shoulder, trying to assist in the run game. The lack of size could be a problem if or when the team is trailing and the opposing team runs the ball to drain the clock.

When trailing at the end of a game we’ve got guys like Fejedelem 6′ 205 or Frazier 6′ 223 or just use a hybrid LB, it really isn’t an issue.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think when it comes to game planning, the idea is to kill their pass game with the coverage guys, but they have options they can use if they start to hammer us on run plays, as you indicated. I dont necessarily think its linked to game time scenarios, like down and they are running out the clock, but more so, what they are being successful with, if its the run game, we bring in a hammer to one of the safety spots, if they are beatng us with passing we bring in another coverage guy. We have a lot of hybrid guys so that our D can transition fluidly as gameplan and strategies change mid game.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think this is to throw off the game planning. Have to prep for both QB’s, maybe he is playing off the fact that there has been little to no prep for the season, little to no chance for media availability and he is throwing confusion in the mix.

      • D's avatar D says:

Maybe the first few games are like that but before game 4 i bet they have settled into one guy at least most the time. This sort of confusion wont really help much after a few games so they will abandon it.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Beli-BS at its finest for U75s. Cam isn’t going to allow this, he didn’t go there to platoon.

He isn’t the sharpest tool…but he can handle the playbook to be on the field the entire game.

      • D's avatar D says:

I agree its misdirection, but i think its also for opponents to have to consider what they might have to game plan for. Coaches do this shit all the time to make opponents have to work harder to plan for them or consider a larger playbook than they will actually use. Small advantages that especially in a short prep year, will actually help them have a small advantage.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It would be no different than not practicing for any opponents backup QB.

Why would belicheat of all people give away that he may platoon his QBs, if he really was going to?

        Not a chance in hell.

  10. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

With belicheat, if you figure something out on your own, then gameplan for it, otherwise…nice try.

During the season he likes to throw wrinkles into a game, just so his next opponent has to spend time on it.

Anything I saw the previous week I would ignore, unless it made a big impact.

Flores isn’t going to panic about anything belicheat does, especially this year.

Used to do similar myself even if the method was letters and e-mails and such….. and I got paid.

OUTSHOT by about 2-1, and giving up 6 power plays (to NONE for Columbus), Tampa Bay, somehow, clawed their way back from a 2-goal deficit, scoring the tying goal in the final minute of regulation to force OVERTIME!! Then Braydon Point, the Bolts’ best player in this series, appropriately ENDED THE SERIES with a quick overtime goal. Yes, the final tally was 4 wins for Tampa Bay and just 1 for Columbus. But this was an iron-tight close series with two games won in OT!! The Bolts now have a few days to grab some much needed rest and prepare for the next round of the playoffs. Will team captain and top scorer Steven Stamkos rejoin the Lightning during the next round?? – – Time will tell.

Tampa Bay certainly will need Stamkos playing at a high level if they are to compete with Philly and Vegas, the two best teams I’ve seen so far in these NHL playoffs.

Oh and as far as paid protesters, they did a group of them that was being bused around from place to place “professional” protesters they were being called and they were being paid to protest. I know the first time i heard about it was when they had the violent protests in Baltimore a few years back. There were reports then of it so im sure that hasn’t changed, as there have been lots of reports of people being arrested who have no connections to the cities that they were protesting in. I have friends in Duluth MN police department, and Atlanta police departments, and both areas had arrests of people like that.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

    Break out player Ford.

They say he can play the slot, so that’s my projected 1st teamer there. At 6’2″ and 200 lbs we’ll be tall at WR with 3 possession receivers. Sprinkle Grant in to change it up…

    • D's avatar D says:

I had a lot of hope for him when we drafted him, he was what i thought was a very high value pick getting him that late, BUT then nothing has ever happened, he has never taken his place. There have been players he surely should have beaten out and he just didnt. Maybe he needed time to get there, but after being pretty excited to get him on draft day, im kinda meh about him now. I wouldn’t be surprised that Jennings and Merritt beat him out.

  35. D's avatar D says:

If we keep 6, and i think we Do, i think Ford is in, but i think Ford is a better outside receiver than slot, im sure he can be moved in and out of the slot position so he probably splits snaps with someone if he makes it, But outside starters, Parker and Williams, rotating on the outside Ford and Jennings. Slot, i think ya have a rotation there between Grant, Merritt, and Cole.We could see a guy like Cole stashed on the PS, and keep Rogers instead and he would rotate in the slot. Depending on the game, and the game plan i think Rogers/Cole, Ford, or Jennings, might be inactive. I think the rest of them will be active most games.

SECOND, PET PEEVE TIME. MY WIFE AND I own a house in West Palm Beach. Naturally I follow the hurricane season forecasts pretty closely. Over the last few years, The Weather Channel has changed its’ philosophy from just reporting the facts to emphasizing the worst case scenarios in a misguided attempt to draw more advertisements and, in theory, higher profits.

CASE IN POINT: currently there are two depressions in the Atlantic basin. One is headed for landfall somewhere in the the Mexican peninsula before moving on to the Gulf of Mexico and, possibly, the Texas coast. It is NOT forecast by the computers to be a major hurricane, and may be only a minimal hurricane. The other depression is forecast by the computers to only attain tropical storm winds or, at worst, a minimal hurricane. Right now, Florida is in the cone of probability. So what does TWC forecaster Jim Cantore say?? He reminds viewers of catastrophic Cat 5 canes of the past and suggests that this storm could ramp-up to major hurricane status just off south Florida before devastating the Sunshine State!! He cautions viewers to “stay tuned to the Weather Channel for the latest updates on this potential calamity!”

THIS IS BULLSHIT!!! NO RESPONSIBLE FORECAST EXISTS that predicts anything like a major calamity from either of these depressions. PERIOD!! A local weather man on channel 28 here in Tampa (Denis Philipps) is saying that these storms need to be watched. BUT he’s also telling THE TRUTH; to wit—-NEITHER of these depressions are forecast to cause major damage and, in fact, at least one of them may only be a tropical storm when and if it hits the U.S.

We had a family business in LA, some homeless people around, because the recycling center was down the street. My dad and I would put the cardboard boxes in the alley for them to take to recycle. One day a homeless lady asks my sister for some money, and she gives her a couple of bucks. Every day that week she hit her up and every day she gave her a couple of bucks. On the Friday the lady said, if you give me $20 I won’t ask you again for a month.

A guy here comes up to my car and asks for money, I gave him $3, he then tells me some story about his mother and wants me to put them up for the night. Getting rid of them would’ve been fun.

Only negative, and its not that big of a deal with a QB who knows how to shift around, is he’s really tall for an OG, so he will hurt throwing lanes for a shortish QB. That said, Tua moves around and finds his lanes really well, so long term i dont see it as an issue.

    • D's avatar D says:

At this point thats what i think he is bound for, backup at the interior positions, i want him to become a starter, but he’s running out of time to establish himself as one. Unless Karras sucks, and i dont think he will, im thinking more of a muti=position backup for Dieter.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And doesn’t have to be this year. Karras is on a one-year contract.

      • D's avatar D says:

Needs to be soon, his 4 years is up in 2022, so time is ticking by. I think Karras could extend with us, they signed him to a one year because last year was his only real year as a starter and it wasnt even a full year, so Karras is a little bit of an unknown as far as a potential long term starter. Dieter being good gives us negotiation leverage with Karras, but i think Karras if playing well is more likely to get resigned than letting him walk in favor of Dieter.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Maybe it is Karras, maybe Deiter or maybe some center comes our way in the offseason. We have lots of leverage on both of them. I’m just hoping the rooks look good.

Gailey has a lot of really awesome ways of explaining things, like he explained that a QB learning a new system isnt as much about learning plays but learning a new language, and the difference between learning a new language but still having to translate from the one ya know to the other basically clogs things up, and when you become fluent and think in that new language is when you will start to excel. That and the bigger is better only when its better statement, which is true, and why so many great players in college dont make it, they rely so much on their athletic and physical gifts they dont always learn to actually play the game well, so yeah thats always been my feelings and why i dont always put a lot of stock on the numbers at the combine, because you can ooooh and aaaaah all you want over those numbers, but you really dont know what ya got to work with because they might be football tarded or too arrogant to learn.

Stang, in regards to having to look to find what the slur was, did you read about the BBC network that used the ‘N’ word on air while reporting on a story about some racist attack or something along those lines? They got destroyed for it.

The station tried to explain they used it in the context of reporting about it and the word specifically in the case they were reporting on. Nobody cared. All they cared about was that the station used the word. Context just didn’t matter to the general public.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t use the word, and don’t like to hear it, unless used in a comical way black on black comedy. I know some say its hypocritical for blacks to use it, then tell white people not to say it, but… white on black in any way shouldn’t be used even in comedy.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I never use the word either. It makes me uncomfortable to hear it as well. I think it is the single most negative word in the English language. And I don’t feel I have any right to tell the black community they can or can’t use it. That is entirely up to that community as far as I care. And even their own community isn’t on the same page about it, but again, as a white guy I don’t feel I get a say in that conversation.

I found the BBC thing interesting though. When it comes to reporting, I don’t want things sanitized. I want clear, raw unbiased reporting, but I think this is a perfect example of how the issues we have with reporting in general are just as much us, the consumer, pushing our reporting agencies in a direction as much as it is the other way around.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

And don’t mistake that to mean that I think that news agencies should be able to use the ‘N’ word. it could have been any other word. I’m saying it’s an example of the public impacting and directing how something is reported.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s not the public that’s pushing that, at least it didn’t start that way.

But I am a firm believer in the Parker and Stone (and really most comics) view on comedy. Either everything is ok, or nothing is. Once you start drawing those lines of compromise, then where does it stop?

It’s a huge discussion right now in the world of comedy, because the gigantic PC movement, Me too, inclusion of LGBT all are changing the way we view comedy, and comics are feeling the squeeze.

Pretty soon all comedy is going to be reruns of Leave it to Beaver and an all inclusive Andy Griffin Show.

  68. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Steve,

I know I presented it as a joke, but I am curious as to your meaning with identity politics in regards to this instance.

What I assume you mean, in a nutshell, is the left agenda riles people up over race, they are in an uproar over the actions of a news network, the network then changes their reporting more in line with what the left wants. You label it as identity politics because ultimately you feel it’s the left pulling those sociopolitical strings to influence the media?

    Is that an accurate assessment?

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The only other thing I can think you meant was that being white, I don’t feel I have a voice in how the black community uses the N word or not. That would be more in line with the meaning of ‘identity politics’.

Oh an words are all about context. The n word exists in other languages, though in those languages it has a different meaning, like in African it means giver, so that tells you a word has no meaning until it’s given one, and that being true, how you use it and the context and intent of it’s use is completely important to whether there she be outrage over it

Sorta of funny that African-American (the old PC term) is accepted but makes you look old school now.

  76. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Mike,

I think the idea of whether or not it’s ok to describe black people as black is a good example of questioning what is being an offensive person and what isn’t. It’s called black lives matter, most black people I know use the term black as a descriptor, but I guess some people get offended by it. So can I call black people black people without being offensive or not?

In the past I’ve often used the terms black folk and white folk. I don’t remember what high profile person did that recently, but they got destroyed for it. Why? What’s wrong with appending ‘folk’ when talking about a group?

I don’t use these terms out of some stupid form of intransigence. I try to use something appropriate. Growing up there was nothing wrong with black and white. And to this day, it still seems to be used extensively. So am I being the dick because 8% of people find it offensive?

I’ve stopped using the word retarded even though it has always been one of my favorite words. I miss it a lot. I truly lament the loss of that word, lol. But it’s universally deemed inappropriate, so I adapted.

    • D's avatar D says:

My criticisms of Ross are due to his repeated mistreatment of season ticket holders among my “posse” (all of whom DROPPED their season tix over a 3 year period), and are NOT caused by increasing age. Ross’s repeated hiring of proven losers for the GM position (Ireland, Tannenbaum, etc.) and his selection of inferior head coaches prior to the current head coach are part and parcel (or is that “Parcells?”) of my critique of his decade of failure. His W-L record is, by far, the worst of any owner in Dolphins history. That’s not “Cranky Old Man” talking. –It’s FACTS that are talking. And the fact that he upgraded the stadium (after failing to get the taxpayers to pay for most of it) does NOT give him a “bye” in my book. It simply means that Ross put a higher priority on the stadium than he did on a winning team. Hopefully, after 10 years of failure, Ross has finally righted the ship. But the bottom line is still this: the Dolphins have NEVER won a playoff game during the Steve Ross Era.
