WR Corps suffer legitimate depth issues with 2 COVID-19 opt outs

Many of you here didn’t really value the services of one Allen Hurns, and maybe I’m on the side of overrating him, but Hurns was on target to be the starter opposite DeVante Parker at least into training camp. If Preston Williams proved he was healthy and battle ready then it’s possible Hurns slipped down the depth chart as he was replaced by the younger, more explosive Williams. IN any case, Hurns was a veteran receiver with AFC experience and one that thrived playing opposite a very talented receiver in Allen Robinson in Jacksonville. Never as much of a big play threat as Robinson, Hurns was a steady, reliable , professional possession receiver. Albert Wilson looked like he was almost all the way back last season, especially towards the end of the season. The last 3 games he caught 17 passes which is nearly half of his season’s production of 41 receptions. He had the lowest YPC average of his career at 8.1 and only one TD but the hip injury that cut his 2019 season short really took its toll on the receiver as he finally worked his way back. I do recall seeing a couple of plays at the end of the year where his explosiveness resembled the player of 2019 where he was turning nothing into something big routinely.

Before the opt outs, I felt like we had a very strong WR room with serious depth and a nice mix of youth and veterans. Parker is 27, Wilson 28 and Allen Hurns 28, along with young up and comers like Preston Williams (23), Gary Jennings (23), Isaiah Ford (24), Malcolm Perry (23) and Jakeem Grant who is now 27. If Preston Williams is ready he takes Hurns spot on the outside opposite Parker. Which receiver or receivers get to thrive in the slot? Jakeem Grant will be in the running as will Gary Jennings and 7th RD draftee Malcolm Perry. Grant has the speed and explosiveness Wilson had but not the size, Grant (5’6 171) is about 25 lbs lighter and doesn’t have the run power to break tackles like Wilson did. Gary Jennings is a little less speedy and explosive but has good size at 6’1 216. Jennings ran a 4.42 at the combine and put up 20 reps so he has some upper body strength. Malcolm Perry is closest size wise and elusiveness to Wilson but doesn’t have the top speed that Wilson had. Perry ran 4.63 40 at the combine. If you watch Perry play though, he always looks fast enough and is a very slippery runner. The Dolphins signed Colts WR Chester Rogers to a 1YR deal which deepens the depth a little. Rogers caught 53 passes in 2018, just 16 last year playing behind WR Zach Pascal.

The biggest concern I have about our WR’s, or really any unit on our team is the depth. If we’ve learned anything by watching MLB, NBA or NHL in 2020 in the year of COVID-19 is that players drop like flies. One second they’re on the team and the next they’re on COVID-19 protocol. Add in the usual NFL injuries, especially considering this year with a huge lack of practices and no preseason games and you will likely see how important good depth will be. I’d even question whether the league will be able to play a full season. We’re going to have to count on a bunch of our deeper depth players this season and I hope we get them all ready for action. When Chan Gailey was with the Jets in 2015-2016, he utilized Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker mostly, with a decent amount of passing to the RB’s Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell. In 2016 Decker was gone after 3 games and replaced by Quincy Enunwa and the offense didn’t really feature a slot WR much. Robby Anderson provided the deep threat on the outside and again, the RB’s, now Matt Forte and Bilal Powell caught a bunch of passes. Jordan Howard isn’t much of a pass catcher but Matt Breida is a good receiver out of the backfield who was stifled by playing time in a 3 headed attack in SF with Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman and also CJ Beathard. Malcolm Perry may also get some use out of the backfield and Kalen Ballage was thought to be a good receiver although he didn’t get to show any of those skills here in MIA. Patrick Laird and Kenyan Drake caught the most passes at RB. In any case, one thing we’ll probably have to get used to in 2020 is NEXT MAN UP . . .

Ha! Didn’t even notice that. They were everywhere, buses, trains, magazines, newspapers, buildings. I think it’s actually a good thing they’re gone though. I do remember one time on the subway with my sister traveling to Manhattan from Brooklyn trying to name all the cigarette brands we could think of. Pretty sure we got over 50. Can’t think of half of them now.

I wonder if thats not gonna just be like a portable mini hooka, which is kinda what vape devices are.

Oh and who who could forget the time the tornadoes wiped out LA. I mean it mostly happes south of ya, but in coo coo land, who knows whats going to happen next. Well except your mom and dad!

It defintely was that, i was dead smack in the parents telling you everything you thought and what was good an bad land, those were still some of my earlier years, so i dont know about the smoking/drinking rules, but i remember the commercials, i remember every movie had people smoking in it, most showed tits, which i was very glad of since my parents had HBO and went to bed early. It definitely was a much more simple time. not as much headache as today where we just seem to want to live in strife.

Wonder what Vikings would take for Adam Thielen. They just added a bunch of new young receivers in some of the top rounds, they dont have a QB that needs a QB friendly receiver to develop, and Thielen leading the slot group would be a nice vet add to round out the team and give Tua a target that is going to be places he is supposed to be out of that position. Our experience level out of the slot is not very heavy.

Dolphin’s wire has answer to “where’s the beef?” It’s on our OL. Not gonna be much trap blocking.
    ————————————————–
If we presume the Dolphins are going to get their young rookies on the field and implement a starting lineup of Austin Jackson, Ereck Flowers, Ted Karras, Solomon Kindley and Robert Hunt, we know that this team will make plenty of rookie mistakes — but they’re also going to have plenty of raw power to fall back on. Just look at the size of these blockers up front.

    Jackson: 6’5, 325 pounds
    Flowers: 6’6, 343 pounds
    Karras: 6’4, 314 pounds
    Kindley: 6’4, 339 pounds
    Hunt: 6’6, 323 pounds

This offensive line would average 6’5, 328.8 pounds across the front.

I agree with Mando. Why else would they bring him back, unless there’s a problem with Tua or may just want another arm? I think there may be something to this, and it’s at least worth keeping an eye on.
    —————————————————-

If i were going with a conspiracy theory on this, it would be they found a suitor for Rosen, not Fitz needing to leave for an extended period of time, etc. Only thing with Fitz would be same deal as Rosen to me, someone wants to offer him something better and he is in on it, but i get the feeling he likes it here and he wants to ride out into the sunset with us. He doesn’t seem like he is wanting to yet again relocate and reboot.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The report was Fitz was absent for personal reasons. The same for Kavon Frazier.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Agree that focus on this should be Rosen and not Fitz. Same time Jake Rudock has been in the league for a while, which assume means not PS eligible. You bring him into camp and he as well as the team knows they can’t keep him unless someone goes somewhere else.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Rudock was cut recently. Think it’s just about having a 3rd camp arm if Fitz misses more practice time due to personal reasons. We have no idea what the reason is. Could be a family issue.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t think it’s a coincidence Ruddock was brought in at the same time Fitz went out for personal reasons. To think someone traded for Rosen, IMO is way out there.

  19. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The justice system in this country is so politically biased and Fdup…

So the politicians can get their kids in Ivy League Schools, but when others try to cheat as well, like Lori Loughlin, they have to go to prison. The kicker is (not official yet, but…) neither Lori nor her husband will end up doing any time in prison, only house arrest, because of covid.

Even so, why aren’t they investigating these politicians?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Because politicians have power and influence. That’s another reason for term limits.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Lori Loughlin and her husband tried to scam the system at USC….. that’s a crime. Even though yes a whole lot of kids get admitted to private schools when otherwise wouldn’t. But that’s the school’s alumni network and their own reasons. Had a friend whose last name was on two buildings and he shouldn’t have been there (and no longer was after sophmore year).

Not sure why you turn this to politicians though. Big money is far more in play. Whole lot more rich business folks out there than elected officials (even if am sure connected politicians have a leg up on getting their kids in).

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I actually agree with Steve here Stang. Lori Loughlin’s husband is a staunch Trump supporter, so he should do time and we should investigate the politicians these corrupt people support. 😉

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We’ll have to disagree on that one. Shouldn’t matter one bit what the guy has done for Trump. Everyone should be treated the same, including as to whether or not you investigate political connections. We’ve had enough Witch Hunts.

Recently watched a replay of the Colts game. With 50 seconds left 4th and 10 on our 16, trailing 16-12 the colts called their 1st TO after a clock stopped incompletion. They didn’t get the 1st down and we took over and ran out the clock. If they had kicked a FG or just didn’t call the TO, we would’ve needed a first down or they would’ve gotten the ball back.

Watching the ending I’m thinking, if they don’t pickup the 3rd down, they could still get the ball back, wonder if they’d try an FG, then the idiot calls a TO.

I bring this up, because someone recently said, the coaches must know more than us, since they’re in the NFL. I disagreed and brought up click management as an area where they don’t know more.

    • D's avatar D says:

They make mistakes, i dont think it means we know more, not to mention they are making that decision with a whole helluva lot going on down there. Id be sure as fuck up for giving it a try one day, so if you ever convince them that we might know better and they decided to test it out, im down for taking a shot at it.

  27. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“Rosen’s young. You can say he’s been in the league for three years, but he’s still a young player.” — Flores. You could take that one in a number of different ways. Few of them end up with props for Rosen.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Rosen has had a rough ride in his career. Constant change in offensive systems in college and in the NFL. He also had some injuries in college including concussions. He’s still only 23 years old. He’s likely headed for another change as a starting QB because Tua will be the next man up in the big scheme of things in Miami. He’s got prototype size and an NFL arm. We might see him with another team in the next few years. Teams are always looking for the QB’s that have ability. If he’s not this or that and a leader, his career might be one of a backup. It’s up to him.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Key thing for me on Rosen is he played for us last year and then got yanked. Never to be seen again. Not saying he doesn’t have it in him, but after that not even the learning reps. He did get drafted high for a reason though.

  28. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Had to cut this from a long article about a bunch of players from different teams.

    HAIL MARY
Star turn in South Beach? Keep an eye on Miami Dolphins tight end Mike Gesicki as a candidate for the biggest breakout of 2020. The third-year pro is coming off a solid sophomore campaign in which he amassed 51 catches for 570 receiving yards and five touchdowns. He finished third in end-zone targets among tight ends last season, per Pro Football Focus. He should see his opportunities increase with new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey favoring spread formations, particularly empty sets with tight ends deployed in various spots.

As a natural mismatch player due to his size (6-6, 250) and athleticism, Gesicki could align out wide or play as a big slot receiver against overwhelmed linebackers and defensive backs. Gailey doesn’t mind featuring the tight end when he has a potential all-star at the position with a unique set of skills (see: Tony Gonzalez’s 96 catches, 1,058 yards and 10 touchdowns during the 2008 season with Gailey as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator). While I’m certainly not ready to proclaim Gesicki a gold-jacket guy, he’s a former volleyball standout with the kind of athleticism that’s easy to showcase in a wide-open passing game. Don’t be surprised if that leads to a massive jump in production for the 2018 second-round pick.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Kind of makes sense. Tall, strong WR with jumping ability going against slot corners who are usually on the shorter side. Williams has decent speed, but he’s not going to outrun many corners to take the top off. Grant on the other hand does. Plus Grant probably gets lost in the crowd at slot due to his height.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

They won’t put a small slot CB on him, they’ll put a bigger corner, maybe even a guy who usually plays outside. It’s possible, Eric Decker played in the slot and he was 6’5 so there’s that.

Never thought that would happen, putting Preston in the Decker role, but it’s a great idea. Parker will be more free on the outside, Preston will be unstoppable inside, and Grant will pull the occasional deep pass in, just to keep them honest.

I wonder, if Grant has known for a while, that they planned on using him on the outside. His trading video seemed to suggest it did. He also seems more motivated, than anytime previous.

Bored at work so doing another 2021 draft. The order keeps changing every week. Figure I’d post it until we start getting practice tidbits.

7 Patrick Surtain II, CB Alabama, 6’1″ 203 lbs, being compared to Byron Jones. Future X replacement. He’s excellent with minimizing/suffocating throwing windows and leaving little room for error. Containing standout ball skills, Surtain II also is innate with finding the ball in flight and remaining competitive through the catch point. He’s also aggressive with punching and stripping the ball out of the arms of ball carriers.

9 Jaylen Waddle, WR Alabama, 5’10” 182, Wilson’s replacement. Waddle plays the game in one mode and that’s full throttle. Debunks the 0-60 saying. Instead, he starts out in 60 mph and can continue to floor the gas pedal and increase speeds at any moment. Catch radius is high and wide. Able to extend well outside of his body structure in order to haul in passes. His right now speed and breakaway capabilities make him a tough assignment for anyone to cover.

39 Josh Myers, C/IOL Ohio State, 6’5″ 312, Ohio State center. He’s impressive on multiple fronts. His mobility to sink in and turn out interior DL on scoop blocks and combination blocks stands out as a huge asset for the Buckeyes’ rushing offense. His ability to serve as the bridge from B-gap to B-gap provides stability in pass protection and rarely yielded leakage from opposing pass rush. He’s got one hell of an anchor, too.

41 Tyler Shelvin, IDL LSU, 6’3″ 360, Powerful and massive nose tackle and run defender that isn’t easily moved. Anchor is stout and he dominates single blocks and holds his own against doubles. Clogs up the interior, eats space and keeps the second level clean. He’s a load to move and he thrives in tight space. Dominates in a phone booth. He isn’t a dynamic pass rusher but he relentlessly pushes the pocket and puts considerable stress on the depth of the pocket. Plays with tremendous urgency and effort. Quick with good mobility for a man of his stature. Think Vince Wilfork.

71 Charles Snowden, LB Virginia, 6’7″ 235, Insane length and he generally does well to use it, especially as a run defender. Capable of winning with first contact, placing his hands, playing with extension and keep opponents away from his frame. Positive flashes in zone coverage drops defending the hook/curl and flats. Sharply reads the backfield and gets his long arms in throwing lanes. Features a massive tackle radius and he routinely finishes outside his frame.

102 Kylin Hill, RB Mississippi State, 5’11” 215,Rocked up upper body and has the arm size of rushers bigger than his listed body size. Muscular and round legs plus a stout trunk that help him break tackles when defenders attempt to take out his legs. Strong shoulders and core help him run through arm tackles and shake off reaching or lunging last resort players. Punishing runner.

134 Quentin Lake, S UCLA, 6’1″ 193, He will align as the nickel in man coverage vs. 10 and 11 personnel groups. He is a good athlete with good agility, balance and body control. Lake is very good due to his value as a versatile asset. He is fluid with loose hips and moves much like a cornerback would. He has versatility in his ability to align on the back end, in the low hole or in the slot. He has excellent instincts and seems to always be in the right position, both in his run fits and when the ball is in the air.

184 Patrick Johnson, EDGE Tulane, 6’3″ 255, Tulane uses him all over the defensive front seven including off-ball linebacker, on the edge and he even gets reps rushing the passer from the interior defensive line. Plays fast and brings terrific speed as an outside rusher. Blends his burst with good flexibility and rush variety to make him an effective pass rusher. Does well to convert speed to power, get under pads and execute a potent bull rush. Showcases the ability to play in space and he’s proven the ability to flow laterally and make plays outside the numbers. Appears sufficient in zone coverage drops. Has good processing speed and football intelligence – does a great job staying home, not biting on false keys and triggering appropriately. Features the ability to take on blocks, disengage and position himself to finish. Is a good tackler that plays under control and takes good angles in pursuit. Plays with a motor that is always cranked.

190 Sam Ehlinger, QB Texas, 6’3″ 230, Hard nosed, tough QB. Supreme leader that’s more of a lead by example type of player. Never afraid of the moment, he’s not hesitant at all with accepting the moment and attacking it head on. Ehlinger is a true playmaker that can become a bit of a sandlot type of quarterback. Think his style of play matches up with Tua more than Rosen. His arm strength and indecisiveness at times has him falling this far.

    ——————————————————————-
Piggy, I am just thinking forward as if Howard may not be the same guy with his knee. His cap hit goes way down from 20 mil in 2020 to just 2.8 mil in 2022 (2021 hit is 6.7 mil).

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

BBM — would I ever love Surtain the sequel on the team, but seems only way you do that is if X’s knee is really shot. Would be different if we didn’t just spend cash on Byron Jones and a 1st on Iggy in the off season.

But thanks for all that the thought on that mock. And you brought us a Center in the 2nd. That would leave us with 4 spots on the line set for a good long while.

“Fitzpatrick, who was the MVP of last year’s Dolphins team, looked sharp in his return, effectively executing the offense as usual. He closed out the second 11-on-11 period by throwing a 60-yard touchdown pass to Preston Williams, delivering the only score of Saturday’s practice.”

So yeah, I’m betting the ‘unicorn’ was the TD score by the offfense.

Projected opening day line-up from Dophins Wire.

    Offense
    QB – Ryan Fitzpatrick
    RB – Jordan Howard
    WR – DeVante Parker
    WR – Preston Williams
    WR – Jakeem Grant
    TE – Mike Gesicki
    LT – Austin Jackson (R)
    LG – Ereck Flowers
    C – Ted Karras
    RG – Solomon Kindley (R)
    RT – Jesse Davis

    Defense
    EDGE – Shaq Lawson
    DL – Davon Godchaux
    DL – Christian Wilkins
    OLB/EDGE – Andrew Van Ginkel
    LB – Kyle Van Noy
    LB – Raekwon McMillan
    LB – Jerome Baker
    CB – Byron Jones
    FS – Bobby McCain
    SS – Eric Rowe
    CB – Noah Igbinoghene (R)

  68. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

LOL @ the Fitzpatrick rumors being over nothing. I almost said yesterday that I bet Flores was intentionally vague to let the rumor mill run rampant.

It does seem to be the M.O. of this F.O. to purposely fuel speculation that way. Be vague and let the U-75s (can’t believe I’m using that term, lol) do all the work of creating misdirection themselves.

Great to have X back to get some work in before the season starts. Hopefully we can get him up to game speed in 3 weeks.

  69. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Hunt is from the smallest program of all the rookie OL so it’s possible he’s behind at this point and Davis is no slouch despite what you hear here and the coaches love him similarly to McCain.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. Hunt might have been drafted for his upside even if he’s not ready right away. Davis is definitely valued more by coaches than the fans.

  70. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Oh okay. Ogbah seemed to play LDE most of the time for the Chiefs last year. He’s more DE than and Edge/OLB type. We’re going to use so many different looks with rotating personnel anyway so it really doesn’t matter.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

With McCain on the field we go into nickel really without even any substitutes

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Well not quite still need to take a LB off

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You could almost say that we can morph into nickel with Baker on the field because he can cover. Van Noy is solid in coverage and Van Ginkel dropped into coverage a lot last year too. Not saying to matchup on WRs but RBs and TEs.

  71. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Projected oline starters:

    LT – Austin Jackson (R)
    LG – Ereck Flowers
    C – Ted Karras
    RG – Solomon Kindley.
    RT – Jesse Davis

  72. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

One thing about X is he’s already a proven player and the defense didn’t change. So all he needs is to be healthy and have a solid week of practice. He might have his snap count lowered early on if he doesn’t get enough reps.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, have to figure they’ll work him back carefully, so reduced snap count to start is likely unless he returns to practice in the next week or so.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah and good to hear Igbinoghene is impressing. His college coaches said he’s just getting started and his best football has yet to come.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yep! Even if X is slow to return this should be a very formidable secondary.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Look how well Needham played down the stretch last year. Statistically the stats weren’t good for the defense but you saw individuals improving.

  73. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“Reigning Canadian Football League Most Outstanding Rookie Nate Holley has signed a free-agent deal with the Miami Dolphins. The 6-foot, 210-pound linebacker signed his deal after working out with the team Saturday.” Seems we’ve had some success with CFL finds before. At his size sounds like a safety though.

  74. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Even id we don’t win a lot of games this year I want to see this team be a pain in the ass to beat. Then we make that big jump in 2021.

WELL IN ABOUT 3 minutes the NHL Conference semi-finals begin in Edmonton on NBC. The underdog Dallas Stars take on the favored Colorado Avalanche in a game that I expect the Avs to win. As you’re watching tonight’s contest, ponder the fact that 7 of the 8 teams remaining in the playoffs are based in the United States. Yet our country is nowhere NEAR being ready to run a tournament like this. That’s WHY i’m dubious of the NFL’s ability to lead us through the upcoming season in the manner that Canada has led the NHL through the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

HOPEFULLY, my fears are groundless and the coming NFL season will be a rousing success for both the league and our beloved Dolphins.

Enjoy tonight’s game on NBC. Prediction– Avs 4, Stars 2.

I mentioned below about the diets of players… here’s another example of players doing the right thing. Have we turned the corner? Is Flo that big of an influence? It seems these guys are actually taking things serious, or is it just the times we’re living and the hedonistic ways of past players isn’t available now, or maybe these guys can’t go out. I think training camp is in the bubble and they can’t go out.
