WR Corps suffer legitimate depth issues with 2 COVID-19 opt outs

Many of you here didn’t really value the services of one Allen Hurns, and maybe I’m on the side of overrating him, but Hurns was on target to be the starter opposite DeVante Parker at least into training camp. If Preston Williams proved he was healthy and battle ready then it’s possible Hurns slipped down the depth chart as he was replaced by the younger, more explosive Williams. IN any case, Hurns was a veteran receiver with AFC experience and one that thrived playing opposite a very talented receiver in Allen Robinson in Jacksonville. Never as much of a big play threat as Robinson, Hurns was a steady, reliable , professional possession receiver. Albert Wilson looked like he was almost all the way back last season, especially towards the end of the season. The last 3 games he caught 17 passes which is nearly half of his season’s production of 41 receptions. He had the lowest YPC average of his career at 8.1 and only one TD but the hip injury that cut his 2019 season short really took its toll on the receiver as he finally worked his way back. I do recall seeing a couple of plays at the end of the year where his explosiveness resembled the player of 2019 where he was turning nothing into something big routinely.

Before the opt outs, I felt like we had a very strong WR room with serious depth and a nice mix of youth and veterans. Parker is 27, Wilson 28 and Allen Hurns 28, along with young up and comers like Preston Williams (23), Gary Jennings (23), Isaiah Ford (24), Malcolm Perry (23) and Jakeem Grant who is now 27. If Preston Williams is ready he takes Hurns spot on the outside opposite Parker. Which receiver or receivers get to thrive in the slot? Jakeem Grant will be in the running as will Gary Jennings and 7th RD draftee Malcolm Perry. Grant has the speed and explosiveness Wilson had but not the size, Grant (5’6 171) is about 25 lbs lighter and doesn’t have the run power to break tackles like Wilson did. Gary Jennings is a little less speedy and explosive but has good size at 6’1 216. Jennings ran a 4.42 at the combine and put up 20 reps so he has some upper body strength. Malcolm Perry is closest size wise and elusiveness to Wilson but doesn’t have the top speed that Wilson had. Perry ran 4.63 40 at the combine. If you watch Perry play though, he always looks fast enough and is a very slippery runner. The Dolphins signed Colts WR Chester Rogers to a 1YR deal which deepens the depth a little. Rogers caught 53 passes in 2018, just 16 last year playing behind WR Zach Pascal.

The biggest concern I have about our WR’s, or really any unit on our team is the depth. If we’ve learned anything by watching MLB, NBA or NHL in 2020 in the year of COVID-19 is that players drop like flies. One second they’re on the team and the next they’re on COVID-19 protocol. Add in the usual NFL injuries, especially considering this year with a huge lack of practices and no preseason games and you will likely see how important good depth will be. I’d even question whether the league will be able to play a full season. We’re going to have to count on a bunch of our deeper depth players this season and I hope we get them all ready for action. When Chan Gailey was with the Jets in 2015-2016, he utilized Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker mostly, with a decent amount of passing to the RB’s Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell. In 2016 Decker was gone after 3 games and replaced by Quincy Enunwa and the offense didn’t really feature a slot WR much. Robby Anderson provided the deep threat on the outside and again, the RB’s, now Matt Forte and Bilal Powell caught a bunch of passes. Jordan Howard isn’t much of a pass catcher but Matt Breida is a good receiver out of the backfield who was stifled by playing time in a 3 headed attack in SF with Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman and also CJ Beathard. Malcolm Perry may also get some use out of the backfield and Kalen Ballage was thought to be a good receiver although he didn’t get to show any of those skills here in MIA. Patrick Laird and Kenyan Drake caught the most passes at RB. In any case, one thing we’ll probably have to get used to in 2020 is NEXT MAN UP . . .

OD, I think the Islanders/Flyers matchup is a good one. Either team could win this series. The Isles are playing better 5 on 5 hockey at the moment but both teams have 4 line depth and good goal tending. It should be fun.

I have no emotion for anyone in the west in Hockey except a minor dislike of Vancouver and would not mind seeing Vegas win …

In the East , I HATE Boston, Love Tampa, don’t mind the Flyers , and as I said to someone last week , I recognized 1 name on Islanders other than Trotz who hails from Dauphin MB.

So. Tampa Vegas final would be cool

It’s basically how I feel, and I was surprised that he only glanced over the crime issues in the inner cities, the fact that blacks are killing each other by the thousands, much more than whites and police are killing blacks, it’s not even close. Fix the problems in the inner cities first, because BLM has no desire to do any of that, they’re just white shaming and destroying police.

Titans released rookie QB Cole McDonald in order to have a vet backup in Trevor Simien who they just signed.

McDonald decided to forgo his final year of eligibility to enter the draft, and the Hawaii product recorded the fastest 40-yard dash time of any quarterback at the NFL combine. During his final two seasons at Hawaii, McDonald threw for 8,010 yards, 69 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. He also rushed for 11 touchdowns over that span.

He freelanced, was late or didn’t show up for position meetings, and generally had a bad attitude. His teammates wanted him gone. Because he was an ass. The Seahawks let him go because he was all about himself. He is a prima Donna – Why would anyone think he had value as a mentor or that a young team would want him?

  55. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

ORob – I was not speculating that Thomas was a bad teammate and prima donna with the Seahawks. Have you forgotten the bird as he was being carted off the field? All of the acrimony that proceeded it. Hawks dumped him because his talent no longer offset the hassle of having him on their team. Ravens just did the same. He is not a great player anymore. He may have been in the beginning few years but that Seattle defense was loaded so it is hard to tell if it was individual talents or just a serendipitous combination of players. None of them went to other teams and shined. Sherman has had the most success but he has never reached the level that he had in Seattle.

      • D's avatar D says:

He is still better than half the safeties in the league probably, just out of pure instincts and god given ability, but father time has caught up to him, some of those hard hits are bringing injuries now and overall he just isnt as able as he use to be. Still good, but i wouldnt call him elite anymore.

      • D's avatar D says:

Also, its been probably past 4-5 years now he has just been a sour dude. Flipping off the fans in Seattle, demanding trades to other NFC teams, thinking his shit dont stink and alienating his teammates, and now a suckerpunch on a teammate that got him kicked off the team, but sounds like it was just the last straw.

    • D's avatar D says:

At this point with Thomas, we would be just as good bringing Jones back to be that mentor at Thomas. Jones probably has a little left in the tank too, vs Thomas who has never been right since that hit on Gronk tht basically put both of them out for the rest of the year.

      • D's avatar D says:

Oh and im not suggesting bringing Jones back gfor real, i just was making a point that we would bne better off with Jones than Thomas.

Asked about rehab from the ACL, tells us this isn’t his first rodeo with the ACL. Knew he had to put in the work, stayed here through the whole offseason, worked his ass.

It’s all about how you work, being dedicated.

Williams on what he can take from his rookie year. “Just getting my feet wet. I feel like I could’ve caught more balls. Game slowed down a little bit too so I think I can have a better year.”

Getting open is the number one job. Says Gailey gives his WRs more time to work the DB and get open.

Preston says he’s learning more positions in this offense. Calls it simpler. Offensive is unique, he says. Compared his body type to Brandon Marshal who of course had a big year in 2015 with Chan Gailey.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If Williams doesn’t work out it won’t be cause he doesn’t have the right mindset. Interesting that the O gives WRs more time to get open. That works with both Fitz and Tua so long as the OL holds up.

I think with Needham, i always considered the fact he was a fill in and in a year where we were basically full year auditioning for future roles i felt like he probably had secured on by the time the season ended. I didn’t think this camp he went in as a bubble guy, i felt like he might could lose his spot if someone else just really balled out, and the fact we took two DB’s kinda early, game me pause, but i think the dude obviously deserves to be on the inside looking out, instead of vice versa. Also, coach Flo wasnt those type guys on the team, so if we keep 10 DB’s, im thinking he is definitely one of those 10, along with X, Jones, Jones, Igmahogany, Rowe and McCain. Probably Fejedelum, and Frazier are in as well because of their ST play.

Leaves one spot for some guys im kinda pulling for, like Picasso Nelson Jr, who is from Southern Miss, just down the road from me, and also, i mean how can ya not love that name. Picasso has his receiver boxed in. Or if you prefer a more elaborate metaphor, Picasso’s cobverage has the QB as confused as an art neophyte putting meaning to a cubist composition.

    • D's avatar D says:

Seriously though, there probably is like one spot and probably 3 guys fighting for it. Maybe we brong in another vet when cuts happen and kick all three to PS.

New walk through metal detectors have been installed to allow fans to keep all items in their pockets for faster entry.

    • D's avatar D says:

Wonder if they are like the ding dong sizers they have at the airports which let them see past the layer of clothing and get a full contour of the body. “Sure is cold in here today…..ehem…..”

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If someone checks out the contour of my package…. well then will he the one-thousandth time dude or girl has done that that day. Am sure they get bored after a while.

      • D's avatar D says:

Depends on if your average in that scale, if your on the high end or low end, you probably make their afternoon discussion.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

They won’t be AIT – You leave something in your pocket and they alarm. plus they are slower than metal detectors. Not sure what kind of metal detectors allow you to keep stuff in your pockets. You are either detecting metal or you’re not.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You are the expert on this stuff. Something is different though. Could “metal detector” been the wrong way to describe? Pretty sure keys stay in pockets though….. that would be hard to get wrong.

  74. D's avatar D says:

Damn Wyoming, it looks like Marco might be petering out right about where you are about the same time that Laura comes for her visit. Starting to remind me of that movie “Perfect Storm”

I guess its called the Fujiwhara effect, but thats usually if they are cyclonic formed, ie in the stage of a hurricane with an eye and int hat case they can merge and become stronger, but this looks like you are just gonna get a deluge.

  75. D's avatar D says:

I can tell you from experience, you do get a little bored with titties once you have seen a few thousand mammograms, again, only if you are really average on that scale, the ones where they have to take 3 shots of each boob just to capture all of it, you tend to remember those. Or the ones that are excessively, and i mean excessively lop sided, maybe the ones that have 2 inch nipples or some other odd characteristic.

    • D's avatar D says:

I actually have gotten pretty good at guessing age and weight just from looking at a mammogram. Every once and a while you get a grandma who got a boob job earlier in life and you get thrown a curve, but you can see the implant so at least you know this one is going to be a toughie.

From other stuff i have read about his flexibility with the WR’s it stems more from the fact that he will let them improvise on their routes and really only expects them to be at a certain place at a certain time, allowing them some flexibility on how they run it. I dont know that it gives them more time to get open, just more ways to get open, lets them bypass standard routes to confuse the DB’s.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Just going off what Preston said: “Getting open is the number one job. Says Gailey gives his WRs more time to work the DB and get open.”

      • D's avatar D says:

I was going off what Gailey has said previously about route flexibility, and im sure timing is important, because thats what the QB’s will be looking at when they go through their read progressions, who looks like they will be open when they are supposed to be.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So what are you thinking has changed? Maybe less pure timing patterns with short windows?

  77. D's avatar D says:

Steve i think the thing with Needham is that true, some players have all the gifts but they dont have the heart so they inexplicably fail when they have no business failing, some underrated players have limits to their ceiling but they let themselves buy into that and dont try to over come it with effort and then you have the two middle groups, the limited gifts, but huge heart guys who succeed even when they aren’t supposed to, and the humble super start who goes on to have a monster career because ion top of the gifts, they are thankful for them and they work their butts off to stack skill with heart.

That last one is becoming a unicorn these days, and in its place are those guys who bust ass to make their way. I think Flo and Co. are activley seeking for those guys, but grabbing the unicorns as they come across them. I think though if they had their druthers they would rather have a team full of Nick Needhams vs OJB’s, Zeke’s, or Jamal Adam’s.

  78. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Not too worried about the injuries in practice today. It should be expected some people will get banged up, but I like the very physical approach we’re taking. In a shortened offseason with no live preseason games, we need to ramp it up in order to be ready. I assume in the next week or two, we’ll play a long scrimmage game D vs O with live tackling as well.

  79. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m surprised to see the Bills coach publicly make a big deal over some games being in stadiums with 20-30%% capacity vs none. That presents weakness IMO. If you are that worried about having to play in front of reduced crowds on the road, what are you saying about your team and players?

We’ve seen low capacity stadiums before, and at 20% the crowd isn’t going to impact the game like a full stadium does.

Also, I disagree with the level playing field take on some fans vs no fans. It’s not the NFL saying to the Bills ‘you can’t have fans’. Why should fans in other states not be allowed in their stadiums because New York chooses to be more protective?

I look at it more like different weather in different states. The NFL can’t control that, and doesn’t say we’ll only play when the weather is the same no matter where you play. Maybe not a perfect analogy, but I see it as more about having to play the hand your location/state deals.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

      Weather is a good analogy.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think it’s different because they knew before the season starts that some states will allow crowds and others won’t. They knew this well in advance so they could have made decision to just not allow fans. I don’t think it’s a huge difference to have a 1/3 of the fans in the stadium but considering the NFL does everything they can to make it a level playing field you would think this is one thing they would have made sure was even across the board.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I hear ya, Mike, and I’m not saying you’re wrong, I just disagree. I don’t think it’s up to the NFL to restrict some teams to level things out when you’re talking about a negligible difference. If we were talking full stadiums to empty ones, I might be more inclined to agree, but 20%? We’ll barely know they’re there.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

And by November or December, maybe some of these more restrictive states will allow fans, and teams like the Jills can stop crying 😉

  81. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I think how far we go this year will be determined by how well our offensive line comes together. Our D should be vastly improved without question, and we’ve got the skill players on offense to be a force. If our oline is decent, I could see us being a legitimate contender for the division title.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I disagree. I think it all comes down to us being allowed to have 14k fans at home games vs 13K. I mean can’t we just get those extra thousand in, so on 3rd and 10 the QB won’t be able to hear and we’ll get a stop 🤔

  82. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Stanger – Metal detector could be the wrong way to name it, but i can’t believe they would be using any kind of imaging technology over metal detectors. One because they are expensive – $175K+ for AIT vs. $1,000-$5000 for WTMD. Two privacy concerns – TSA went through hell early on because people were afraid officers were sitting in a room ogling images. And three, health concerns – some people think their babies will have three eyes if they go through one.

Walk throughs though can only detect metal – not what it is. if they are are saying you can leave your keys in pocket, they would have to make the settings less sensitive and hope you were only carrying keys. A Glock 42 or 43 probably has about as much metal as most people have on their key chain.

    • D's avatar D says:

Not to mention with 3D pruners you can just print a carbon fiber one. No metal at all.

Just read this from Wingfield. Pretty cool.

The Dolphins selected three offensive linemen in the top 111 picks of the 2020 NFL Draft. Austin Jackson from USC, Robert Hunt from Louisiana Lafayette and Solomon Kindley from Georgia are embracing the grind of their first camp. Kindley, Miami’s fourth-round pick, said the trio developed a relationship back in February.

“Austin said the other day, ‘could you all imagine all three of us would have been at the Miami Dolphins at the Combine?’ Because at the Combine, they split us up into groups and I was like No. 28, Austin was like No. 30 and Rob (Hunt) was like No. 25; and we were all with each other the whole Combine,” Kindley said. “Those are my boys. I’m glad to be with them.”

    • D's avatar D says:

One thing i kept hearing about Hunt was he was from a small school. Louisiana Lafayette is division 1, so i dont get the small school knock, they are sun belt and they are a pretty solid team. I think he has a decent chance of beating out Davis for RT.

Malcolm played that ball perfectly, Tua under-threw it a little, Perry adjusted to the ball and shielded the defender from being able to make the play by letting it drop over his shoulder instead of turning back for the ball. If he had turned back that was either going to be a PD/INT/or a really difficult contested reception.

      • D's avatar D says:

Actually when I went back and read other descriptions of that throw, it looks like they said it was into a strong wind so that might have been why it hung up there a little. Either way, that adjustment by Perry is exactly how that is supposed to be played in that scenario.
