Injuries and cuts reshape Dolphins roster

When I first heard the news that the Dolphins waived/injured our 5th RD pick Curtis Weaver I was furious. Sometimes I can’t help myself, I think “same old Dolphins”. I thought for $670K we could have put the kid on I/R and next year we’d have ready to go and see what he can do. Take a look at the picture up above, the dude is flexing and my modest biceps are bigger than that dudes, he looks soft. Still, Weaver was productive and many draft experts gave us high marks on that pick, a great value in the 5th RD. The Browns, who claimed Weaver have put him on I/R. To be fair, I thought Flores looked especially and unusually uncomfortable when asked about Curtis Weaver. Flores is pretty quick and direct and during the interview, he labored to answer why Weaver was cut which leads me to think there’s something more than we may ever find out. In any case, Weaver is a Brown now and you know what that means to me. (I’ll spare you the expletives)

Kalen Ballage’s career as a Miami Dolphin is also over. He leaves much like one other promising RB draft pick of the past left, in disappointing fashion. Daniel Thomas never fulfilled his potential and Kalen Ballage who I once thought could be our version of David Johnson “light” yet turned out to be David Johnson 20,000,000 gallons of helium. So with the waiving of Curtis Weaver and then the release of Kalen Ballage, the Dolphins signed DB Deatrick Nichols and claimed RB Salvon Ahmed, a former Washington Husky RB. I can’t blame Kalen Ballage completely because our organization doesn’t have a ton of cred evaluating RB’s. We traded away Ajayi (Gase), we traded away Kenyan Drake (who is flourishing with the Cards) and now gave up on Kalen Ballage. If Ballage does well elsewhere, that will amp up this feeling.

The camp battles so far are encouraging. Big Robert Hunt and Solomon Kindley are making noise, winning some battles and losing others but making a splash nonetheless. I like that last years 3rd RD pick Michael Deiter is getting a lot of reps at center and is most likely being groomed as the replacement for Ted Karras who is here on a 1 YR show me contract. I can actually see light at the end of the tunnel with this O-line. Eventually, I see Jackson – Flowers – Deiter – Kindley – Hunt, or maybe Jesse Davis continues his elevated play at RT and holds off Hunt and Hunt moves inside to RG and then Kindley is a very nice depth player to have. The QB’s have all had ups and downs and rookie phenom Tua Tagovailoa is not immune to that. This is expected, anyone who thought Tua was just going to ride onto the field on a unicorn and throw rainbow TD’s every throw was due for disappointment. He’s just getting started and I’m sure there is a lot the kid is trying to absorb at this point. He’s got talent, let him get up to speed. Honestly, I expect some play from mostly everyone with the limited amount of work players and coaches are able to get in. Hopefully as the season progresses, things will look better. If that happens, that’s a good thing. I think teams that have mostly the same personnel and coaches back have a clear advantage over teams with many new p-layers, new coaches and new systems. The Dolphins check all of those boxes so keep your early expectation low.

GO DOLPHINS!!

    First, maybe second by now?

    • D's avatar D says:

Nope first, and RB’s are kinda like that, and its not hard to move on. First rounders are the ones that kinda sting when they dont work out, but thats just because very few of them need to be taken in the first to start with and your dumb investing that much in a RB unless he is a decade type talent.

  2. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

On Ballage, his vision isn’t up to par with an NFL RB, so he’ll never be a good RB in the NFL.

Perry on the other hand has exceptional vision, so even though he’s small and slow, he might make it.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Perry as a RB? I think he may get more touches as a receiver, and not out of the backfield either. I think he may do both, but I see Perry more on the LOS, not in the backfield.

  3. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Salvon Ahmed is a tough RB but not very big or fast (4.62) but gets to his top speed very quickly to beat defenders.

I mocked Nichols from USF to us a few times in the late rounds when he came out. He is another versatile DB. Played CB in college and played safety in the XFL. I liked him cause I thought he was one of the best tackling and hard hitting CB’s in the draft.

    Fine line terminology eh? lol

  6. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Mike E — was still curious that they just didn’t do a restart with Weaver. 5th rounders ain’t diamonds but they don’t grow on trees either. Maybe they’d seen enough before the injury to know.

  7. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Fingers crossed for Wyoming today. That storm hit bad. Only good news for him was the center jogged east some and his place was on the lesser side of the thing (if there was a lesser side).

    • D's avatar D says:

Eye wall is pretty much eye wall if its a condensed system, so they always say east side of the eye wall is the worst, which i think he avoided, but i still dont think it looks good for him. Hope you live a clean life my friend, glad to know ya left, and hope you come back to most if not everything still intact.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I think the jog east meant he did not get hit by the eye wall and he was in the cross hairs yesterday. But then just off the eye wall of a Cat 4 is still brutal. What don’t know is how far from the shore his place is. Big difference.

      • D's avatar D says:

Its on a lake so the storm surge would have been an issue, and its not far inland. Was discussing his location the other day, he said Bridge City which is just a little south and west of Orange TX, an closer to the shore, which is pretty much where it made landfall i think.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Didn’t know he was so close to the line….. cause thing landed in Louisiana. Still hoping he wasn’t in the eyewall though. Big diference btwn Cat 4 and say Cat 2 winds.

  8. D's avatar D says:

Well it wasnt next years draft, you could say that on a year 3-4 guy but a 5th rounder from last year, that doesnt add up. Depth at the position really doesnt either, and neither does salary cap with how little he made. Injury itself, and potentially just not a good match between staff and coach is more likely suspect, and im gonna say injury, because like i keep saying, foot injuries can seem minor but they are career threatening in a lot of cases.

Mikey, i wonder if he was uncomfortable because he wanted to make sure he didnt say anythign that showed his displeasure and possibly wasnt flattering to Weaver, like something that he didnt like personally that maybe he could get past with another team. To me the most uncomfortable i have seen Flo is when i see him struggle to find the PR way to say stuff, because that doesnt overly fit his MO.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Definitely possible. Not important in the least, as long as Weaver doesn’t become a playa. If he does, then we look silly.

      • D's avatar D says:

Even if he doesnt it could have been sent packing that got him to shape up. He stays with us he going no where was most likely. Kinda like Phillips, Gase couldnt get him to perform, and now i know part of that probably was on Gase, but part of it was Phillips wasn’t out to prove anything when he was with us, soon as he got the boot and wound up on a rival team, he was motivated to put it back in his face. Unfortunately that guys cant just come in and be as good as they can, they gotta sometimes get their poor little feelings hurt before they max their potential. Those guys usually peter out eventually anyways, though so not biggie.

  9. D's avatar D says:

That SI article i think is pretty good, along with what i think as well. I also thought that quote about had a great time here, was weird and not Flo like, almost like he messed up and caught himself and it came out…well like mike said, awkward. Also looks very much like they could have IR’d him, though so much back and forth on that has made not even know what to think anymore lol. None of those actions add up to anything but a “not in our future plans”, decision.

  10. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I’m guessing they got him in the building and the practice field, realized he truly was a soft slacker who wasn’t a hard worker and told a rookie to drop a weight on his foot. Lol

  11. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Mike the point of saying Perry has great vision had nothing to do with what position he was going to play, just that he has great vision and uses his vision all over the field. He’ll use it after the catch and on KO and punt returns too.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Perry was the Eastern US Tag champion in the U12 division. 🙂

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

        Doesn’t surprise me, he’s like a fly.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Was joshing about Gailey’s comment — “”He’s got a feel for the game. He’s played tag growing up. He knows how to make people miss and make them get out of the way.” And we all know what he meant by that. I’ve tried to tackled those guys and missed.

  12. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think the decision made on Weaver was a combination of severity of injury and ability/chance of being anything more tha a JAG.

So how long is he going to be out? Maybe 1-2 years. Once he comes back how long before he’s close to what he was. Was he biting in camp?

Stole this from Mando, but he does have a point.
    ————————————-
“The eight-player strong 2018 draft class, which featured Ballage as a fourth-round selection, is now down to four players — Mike Gesicki, Jerome Baker, Durham Smythe, and Jason Sanders.”

“The seven-player strong ‘17 class that supposedly “fixed the defense” — remember that one? — has three holdovers still on the roster in Raekwon McMillan, Davon Godchaux and Isaiah Ford.”

“The 2016 draft class — Miami’s first run by general manager Chris Grier — has two holdovers remaining. Those are cornerback Xavien Howard and receiver Jakeem Grant.”

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Grier’s first year as the true GM was last year in 2019 not 2016. Tannenbaum was still in charge of football operations through the 2018 season. Grier set up the draft board and oversaw the scouting dept. but did not have all the power to make draft picks. It was a 3-headed monster between Tannenbaum, Grier and Gase. Grier is now the top dog even though he works closely with Flores.

      • D's avatar D says:

I thought it was 2018 but maybe i was wrong on that.

      • D's avatar D says:

No i am pretty sure it was 2018 Tim, because Grier took over on Gase’s last year with us which was the 2018 season, therefore the 2018 draft was his first one.

    • D's avatar D says:

Check most teams and you will find similar numbers, its not scientific, its a crap shoot and there are so many thing that can go wrong to turn out bad its surprising its that good.

      Think about the “fails”/

Minkah wasnt a failed pick, he just didnt want to be here when he wasnt getting his way. Was that a failed pick, i dont think that the Steelers think so.

Laremy Tunsil, wasnt a failed pick, he started for us every year and was a good enough player we got two first in a trade when the new regime took over.

Harris was a failed pick, ill give him that one, but that is also when the guy mainly doing the picks was T-Bomb.

X was our 2nd pick in 2016, he is turning out well, Drake was out 3rd pick and he is still doing well. Leontee Caroo was a failed pick and we also gave up pick to move up to get him. Again though, T-Bomb pick. Not doing day threes, because they are 50/50 at bests. So one fail in that draft.

2nd round in 2017 was McMillan, not a huge success pick but solid, starter for all his years here, minus the IR year. Tankersly, who never got off the ground because of injuries.

2018, which should be his most dissected draft, hit on 1st second and 3rd round picks.

So all together, it looks like he had maybe 2 misses, and a third if you wanna saddle him with a guy who got and stayed injured but had no injury history in college, and truthfully he didnt start doing all the picks unil 2018, and there hasnt been a miss since then in the money rounds, though Dieter needs to get going or there will be one.

There are ways to spin everything, Mando just likes to go negative most the time.

  23. D's avatar D says:

Large backs have to have great running form to be successful because they are at a disadvantage if they play too upright. I like a really big back, but you have to be very choosy if you go that route. Even if they have college success, if they have bad form, they wont make it in the NFL.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I wonder what the average holdover on teams is across the league for their draft picks in 2016 or 2017 anyway.

  28. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, Tannenbaum was relieved of his duties on December 31, 2018. But what Mando said was Grier’s first year was 2016 just because he had the title of GM though he was not the top dog. Another point is how do you do blow it up rebuild which we did in 2019 and still have a lot of players from previous seasons? It makes no sense.

The clock started for Grier and Flores last year, they are attached at the hip and the success or failure of the team is on them now. Grier hired Flores because they believe in the same things about how to build a team. Mando was once again trying to put out a negative when he knows we hit the restart button last year. Remember Tank for Tua! LOL

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Still not a good run on those draft classes, no matter who was calling the shots. Guess to be fair though should include who we got in picks for some big names not on the list.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We all know that already. You don’t blow it up because it was good. LOL

      • D's avatar D says:

Im not seeing what your seeing Stanger, i just posted up there that most those picks are not on the team anymore because we traded them for the new regime. Biggest flop was probably Charles Harris, but outside of that, Leontee Caroo was a kinda fail on a 3rd round WR, and you might could count Tankersly, but that was not because the guy wasnt good, he just couldnt stay healthy, and to me thats not really a fail, thats shit that happens lol.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So then Mando must be hated cause he pointed it out. 🙂

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

D — we did get some value out of who was traded away though didn’t we? I’m cool with how it turned out even if don’t think were masterful draft either. Thought we got a steal from Houston.

  29. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ballage will have to make the team for us to get most likely a 7th rd pick. That pick could also be in 2022. LOL

  30. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Obviously I think you’re all wrong and when I said we’re getting something for nothing I meant a conditional 3rd pick, but luckily ya’ll have set that straight, lol. 😉

Stanger, it’s not about hating Mando, it’s asking why even bring it up? He already knows what we did and why. What was the point of rehashing it other than to point out a negative about the franchise?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I found the lists interesting and seems a bunch of folks commented on them. Seems sorta of his job. Was part of a much longer article though…. and that was part of his “set-up.” Even if yeah he was pointing out how few people from those drafts were left. Thought it info.

THERE’S SOME BACK-AND-FORTH TALK between local Lightning and Bruin fans as to which team will be helped the most by a two-day delay in the NHL Playoffs. Boston fans believe the extra two days will give their team a chance to recover from their devastating loss yesterday. Lightning fans are hoping the extra two days increases the chance that Stamkos may, indeed, yet play in this series. But after listening to both sides, I’ve concluded BOSTON needed these two days off more than the Bolts did. The Lightning had finally found their mojo after going 0-15 on the power play. They seemed ready to deliver the series knockout IF the series stuck to the original schedule. And, as for a Stamkos return, that remains the great unknown. Let’s talk inequality. We all live under the same set of laws. We all have equal rights. Some get treated differently though. Why is that? Could it be because of their actions? That difference in treatment stems from a lack of acceptance of abnormal (from a societal perspective) and/or criminal behavior? A white thug who acts and talks like a black thug is viewed and treated the same – so is it the color of their skin or the the color of their actions? White criminals who violently resist arrest get shot at the same or greater rates as black criminals. Blacks are disproportionately represented in the criminal justice system because they are disproportionately represented in the commission of crime, especially violent crime. Don’t tell me it’s my fault, or my great-great-great ancestors fault when someone’s actions and behavior get them shot. I will not be an apologist.

I’ve heard this sort of thing on NFLN that other teams are doing this too. Basically it’s telling reporters to not write projected depth charts, and if the do they will no longer be permitted to attend practices.

Think it more than just doing depth charts. Sounds like Jackson is saying they can’t say who is lining up on the first and second teams, or if sometimes on one and other times the other. How do you report plays without it being real clear which team it is?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

“But we can tell you this: Rookie offensive lineman Robert Hunt is making clear progress in the eyes of the coaching staff and shouldn’t be counted out for major playing time. It remains to be seen where Hunt will play; when the Dolphins drafted him, they believed he could play both guard and tackle.”

“▪Another rookie also making progress in the eyes of the coaching staff: third-round pick Brandon Jones. Though he’s a safety by trade, he has considerable experience playing cornerback in nickel packages at Texas, and previously told us that he has been doing that some for the Dolphins.”

“Michael Deiter has made progress in his conversion to backup center, which likely led to Miami parting with South Carolina rookie Donell Stanley.”

“Gaskin ran the ball hard on a 15-plus yard touchdown run in red zone drills but was also quickly stopped by cornerback Nik Needham on a goal line run. With Laird limited this week, it’s too early to determine who will be Miami’s next-in-line running back behind Jordan Howard and Breida. But Gaskin has made a strong case.”

In any case, your post was excellent regardless.

    • D's avatar D says:

Well cops arent supposed to play the innocent or guilty angle, just respond and apprehend.

I think its the fact that there are perceived threats and they consider blacks more of a threat, especially in the more low income areas. I bet you do not have wealthy or at least middle income level blacks, in their areas treat as much of a threat.

Like i said i think its a class issue, lower income areas, white or black, there are more threats so soon as they go to apprehend one of those types in that area, it becomes a fear thing, and as soon as they dont act appropriately, ie follow the commands, its “uh oh, we are going to have a fight” and it all devolves from there.

I was going to respond to Phel in the same manner, but i think his post covers that some, with his thoughts on the community being a large bart of the problem and the fact that thug white will get the same reaction as thug blacks, so i just left it as it with no reply….well until now i guess.

  77. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Today’s conspiracy theory to think about over the weekend.

This pandemic and social unrest is the product of a meeting held by the world elite billionaires to discuss depopulation of the world. Some at the meeting were Bill Gates, David Rockefeller Sr., Oprah Winfrey, Ted Turner, Warren E. Buffett, George Soros and Michael R. Bloomberg. This meeting was held a decade ago. A decade seems like a long time but depopulating the world takes a bit of planning and setting things in motion.

This comment was made years before COVID-19 was even a thing: “Ted Turner proposed cutting down the world population to around 250 million people, a 95% decrease that would necessitate a major WAR or VIRUS PANDEMIC.”

    Civil war(s) maybe?

“Oprah Winfrey met in secret with George Soros and other billionaires to discuss a plan to depopulate the world.” This is the very definition of elitism, and it reveals how transnational billionaires are deciding the fate of America behind closed doors with no input from its own citizens. This isn’t very far removed from how the Obama administration operated, given that President Obama was a member of the Trilateral Commission and thus acted more like a vassal for global interests than an independent American president.

““Taking their cue from Gates, they agreed that overpopulation was a priority,” reported The Sunday Times in describing the meeting, which revolved around population reduction starting with third-world countries.”

    Note:
    – Obama’s shitty Iran deal. They knew (deep down) it would allow Iran to become a major force and start a major war in the middle east.

    – In 2014, Obama prohibited any funding to china for virology research. However, Dr. Fauci, under Obama, provided a 3.7 mil grant through NIH in 2015.

    – George Soros funds ANTIFA, BLM and promotes civil unrest.

    – These billionaires have highjacked the Democratic Party to try and gain control of the government/country. (Biden = puppet)

I could post more notes but I know some of you are laughing and shaking your head at me… or are you? 😉

Nothing wrong with a good conspiracy theory. Some pretty good people in there who are planning billions of deaths there. For starters Buffet and Gates started the Giving Pledge, which means they are giving over half their billions to charity. Turner and Soros have made the pledge as well, but maybe some non-pro fits out there about reducing the population by billions.

And unless there was another meeting….. the people you mention were at the founding one of the Giving Pledge. Even if not all there joined in. All people interested in giving to charity though. And maybe there was another meeting about killing a bunch of folks too.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

You are correct about meeting before (re: Giving Pledge) but that was not in secret like this meeting. ____________________________________________________________–
You are generalizing all situations, this is not true in all cases, that’s the main problem with society, look at these NBA players who are appalled by the wis shooting. they are generalizing that to innocent victims of real injustice to further their agenda.

all situations are different, so are indiv police people, their are good and bad.

generalizing situations are causing people to die, businesses to burn.

Floyds death and the Wis shooting are totally different incidents.

Floyds death was needless, the cop should be dealt whatever punishment apprpriate.

all though i don’t know all the facts to make an assumption the wis shooting look to me to be justified
how in the world do you justify generalizing the two? and in doing so causing people to die.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I didn’t generalize anything. I’m saying there are times when bias can have influence. I’m not saying all cops, and I’m not saying all blacks. I was discussing what happened most recently with my wife and I specifically said to her if a cop tells me not to move or do something I don’t fucking move a millimeter. I don’t get why people don’t listen, and that’s a huge part of the problem too. Still, while the move to lean into the car warranted force, did it merit 7 shots? If he was white would he pump 7 rounds? Maybe this guy would, or maybe he wouldn’t. We’ll never know.

If I was the cop would have grabbed him and put him on the ground.
    ——————————————————————
I dunno what i would have done and im glad to know i dont have to know what i would have done. I have been talking to some cops to see what the protocol is, and they agree with me he should have never been allowed to get in that vehicle. Once he leaned in, they dont know if he is coming out with gun or not and in the heat of that moment, if he reached his hand in/on/around that console it was a situation to where they could have thought he had a gun. Pulling him to the group would have only pulled an armed man out of the vehicle so it still could have ended in 7 shots, just to the front side instead of the back. Also, if there were 7 cops, after the first shot you were gonna get 7 more, because they can determine in that fast of a time, who fired the shot.

I think every time i think about it it keeps coming back to, why the fuck did you let him get around to the door. I mean the guy didnt run, he went from the completely opposite side of the car to the other side, and you were on that side, why didnt anyone step in front of him to block him, why wasnt he tasered (again if he had already been) . I believe he could have easily been taken down before reaching that other side, so a fail on their part, a fail on his part to comply, and one dangerous move = death.

  87. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

There are a few elements I’d like to know before I will have completely made up my mind on the incident.

Did the cops know about the warrant, and was that an attempt to arrest, or were they attempting to detain him for the incident they were called out for?

I’ve read they attempted to use their taser. Was that prior to the video? or is that horsesh^t?

What led up to the aggressive behavior? What was the exchange between the officers and Balke?

    • D's avatar D says:

I dont know if ill ever completely make up my mind on this, i wasn’t there, i wasn’t in direct danger, im not one to not do what the officer says, im not Blake and im not the cops, again, im hella happy not to be either of them.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I can understand that. And I also am glad not be in their shoes. I don’t think I’ll ever find myself in that situation, not because I’m white, but because I will always obey when I’m given a legal command by a LEO.

    • D's avatar D says:

So as far as the most details i have heard that seem consistent 1) he was in an altercation with someone, i have heard “breaking up a fight” and not, the cops get called out and they interact with him. They generally dont run for warrants until they have disarmed and detained the guy, so its doubtful they knew, unless that had happened on the other part of the tape i was referring to yesterday. Most likely scenario is he knew he had the warrant, he didnt comply because he didnt want them to detain and then find out he had the warrant.

so to answer as much as i can Kong,

      1) not 100% but id say attempting to detain him as he wasnt in the back of their car, and no they didnt know about the warrant unless they knew him (lots of frequent flyer criminals just as any cop of corrections officer)

      2) No clue, the media often samples out the part they want to float around, im sure that will come out later though.

      3) Blake was already in an altercation and had gone as far as to brandish a weapon, id say his aggressive behavior was already there, the cops, i would assume they responded to a bad situation, dangerous from the start, so were they on high alert, likely.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, D I know most of the speculation, and that is what we have so far, a bunch of speculation and probably. We need to have these details confirmed which is why I’ve stopped reading about it for probably the next week. I didn’t even know about the 2nd video or taser yet.

Also you made some good points in your previous post about stopping him from ever getting to that car door. Especially after he shrugged off being tasered. It makes me reevaluate the whole thing, because I think you’re right that they failed in letting it get to that point.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

SMH, OK, so I can agree the cops failed in not forcefully subduing him after tasering, and letting him get to his car door. But that is not criminal. The other guy was the criminal. I can also understand 7 shots now. If that was a gun he was reaching for and the cop only fires once, who knows how that would play out.

I also have to wonder if these cops aren’t thinking about how this plays out on national TV as they are in the middle of it. It can slow reaction time and affect decision making. It might explain not wanting to get more physical in restraining the guy. Then it leads to a worse incident.

We are making it IMPOSSIBLE for our LEOs to do their job!

I hadn’t seen the second video. I think the police always have a very difficult job when it comes down to any situation like these. They have to weigh their own life into the equation too, and I think most people that criticize them don’t realize what that actually means. You let the guy reach into the car and it’s you who gets 7 rounds while the guy you didn’t shoot runs away and maybe he gets caught and put in jail for a while, but that’s not worth your life. It sucks.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I really had a problem with those 7 shots, but knowing the cops already tasered him twice, put him down, and he got up and was still resisting changes everything IMO. This was already a highly escalated situation. Once he starts reaching, it has to be life or death at that point in the cops mind.

This is why trying to understand these things in real time is folly. There might still be other information to come out that drastically alters the viewpoint again.
