2020 Season – Week 1 – Dolphins @ Patriots

This is easily the strangest opening to a season that I can remember. I don’t recall knowing this little about our team at this point of the season, just 3 days before our season opener. What I do know is our team is a very young team, 2 of the young ones pictured will likely determine our success or demise this Sunday. Rookie starting LT Austin Jackson is getting his first start of hopefully a very long successful career but it will be difficult task going up against a Bill Belichick team. It doesn’t matter what the names are on the New England defense, he will disguise and confuse even the savviest OL, so both Austin Jackson (LT) and big Solomon Kindley (RG) will have to be on point. If you were to subtract the age of our starting QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, we’re trotting out a very young team. Jackson (21), Flowers (26), Karras (27), Kindley (23) and Davis, the elder statesman at 29. Devante Parker (27), Preston Williams (23), Jakeem Grant (27), Mike Gesicki (24), Durham Smythe (25), Jordan Howard (25) and Chandler Cox (24). The average of the 12 listed (including both TE Durham Smythe and FB Chandler Cox) is 25 years old. Throw in these important factors, very little practice time, no preseason games, a lot of new faces put together, facing a seasoned master in Bill Belichick and there is a chance that many things can go wrong. On the other hand, I think Flores will have our team prepared and I do believe we can see success against the Patriots this Sunday.

That was just our offense, our defense is quite young as well. I’ll spare you the lists with ages but the average age is 25.5 years old. LB Kyle Van Noy is the elder at 30 on the defense. The depth is really young as well, on both sides. It’s a great start in year 1 of the rebuild, it really is. Yes, it was disappointing to jettison Raekwon McMillan who no longer fit our needs because we’ve been doing this for a long time, drafting talent, changing schemes and then purging the talent that doesn’t fit. Hopefully with Flores and Grier we’re done with that cycle. Picking up WR/RB/QB Lynn Bowden from the Raiders make me think we’re not going to be the 1 WR, 2 TE rushing attack a lot of the time. I think we’re looking for playmakers all over the place and in today’s NFL, that’s wise. You have to score to keep up. Nothing like being able to run a game out but you have to be up in order to do that. You can’t stop the best teams from scoring, that’s a fact. You have to be able to keep up. I don’t really know what to expect from our defense. I know we have really shored up the back end with a quality secondary by adding Byron Jones to Xavien Howard for s shutdown duo of CB’s and a fine young rookie NB in Noah Igbinoghene. Bobby McCain will be the centerfielder while Eric Rowe will likely be closer to the LOS. What will be interesting to see how we use the LB’s and DL and in what combinations. Baker and Roberts will patrol the middle with Ogbah and Van Noy on the outside. Of course there will be various formations and Lawson and Strowbridge and Van Ginkel will be a part of. Looking forward to seeing all the pieces in play and even if we’re not successful this Sunday, at least hoping we see signs that things are going to be better.

I look forward to seeing DeVante Parker starting strong and seeing Preston Williams all the way back from injury. Can Jakeem Grant hold off the competition for slot play from Mack Hollins, Malcolm Perry and Lynn Bowden? Will we actually be able to run the ball effectively? Will our young OL be able to pass protect for Ryan Fitzpatrick or will he be running for his life as he did last season. Will our front 7 be able to generate a pass rush for a change? Will the three headed CB combo of Howard, Jones and Iggy be one of the NFL’s best? Can Rowe make the switch to safety and is Bobby Mac ready to resume his role of safety and stay healthy? A lot of questions loom, as the even bigger question that is silent at the moment, but you know when does Tua play is lurking not so stealthily in the shadows. It’s there, because as soon as Fitz has his bad day, it will rear it’s ugly head and be right there in the forefront. For now at least, it hides.

Keep in mind that Bill Belichick desperately wants to answer the question “Was it Belichick or Brady” with a resounding Belichick! Tom Brady, sickeningly so has been anointed NFC MVP and is already in the fucking Superbowl against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. It’s disgusting! I guess the NFL needs a storyline and now instead of seeing New England Patriots 24/7 it’s the freaking Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Brady every second. I think Brady has the better chance to succeed with all that talent on the roster but never count the master Belichick out. True, he won’t have his stalwart QB Brady running the offense anymore and I’m not much of a Cam fan, I think he’s been one of the most overrated QB’s in the game. I don’t think he deserves a marquis, he’s a JAG. If he’s healthy, he’s a threat to run and I think that’s where he’s most dangerous to the opposition. If he’s back there slinging it, I think he’s more dangerous to his own team. It’s going to be fun watching this game, so many angles to come together to make this game a must watch.

GO DOLPHINS!!

The Newton experiment in NE seems like a last ditch effort to salvage the season amidst all they’ve endured this offseason. They’ve put all their eggs in the basket of a inaccurate running QB, coming off of an injured season. It could work, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

They do also have the belicheat factor, but how’s that going to work without a QB? Even the times Brady didn’t play, they at least had a decent backup, some receivers and a D.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Their changes are more than what we dealt with when Ricky walked.

    • D's avatar D says:

The question really is, what does Belichick have up his sleeve. I dont expect any really stupid crazy stuff, i mean thats just not Belichick’s style he wants people doing their jobs, and not show boating so imo, Newton might have designed plays to add an object of distraction for the defense, but ultimately, he probably will not have the team on his shoulders. If i was prepping for them id be focusing on the run game, not stacking the box but playing close to the LOS, and id make him beat me with deep passes. CB’s in press man, Single high safety, Rowe shallow watching for the underneath stuff. If they start beating up with slot receivers drop a LB and bring in Igmahogany and have him play man on them. Put as much pressure on Newton as possible make him think and make mistakes. A lot will depend on how our edge guys do on blitzes/pressure and the containment of Michel and Newton.

  2. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Good article Mike. More questions than answers, but that will make it that much more gratifying come Sunday.

    • D's avatar D says:

I agree it does add excitement for the first few weeks, no preconceived ideas of anything, just watching it like you are literally seeing the team for the first time, because …..well, you are.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t think it’s possible to have answers at this juncture. I can’t imagine that any of the beat writers have a clue as to what we will look like, play like.

  3. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    LOL Steve, of course not!

  4. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Just a thought, and I’m not pointing fingers at anyone because I’d have to point it at myself big time, but I’m thinking it might be a good idea if we can limit political talk here. We all know where we stand and there’s no moving from those sides, so now that football is just about here, do you think we can keep it to minimum? I will do my part of staying out of political topics or bringing them up myself. Thoughts?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

No, I think we should be able to talk as much political talk as we want, but it has to be under the previous article 😉

    • D's avatar D says:

Lol, i have advocated for other boards where we could still enjoy the discussions and comments at a more voluntary exposure, but i also dont think we should have to limit the discussions. We just need to try to keep ourselves in check, police ourselves, its not fair to burden the admins with this or restrict others that can and have been doing it. I really dont think anything good comes from putting governors on, because no one learns to manage themselves and thats a huge point here for overall growth of this group. We need to both learn to manage how we say things, and manage how we accept things.

I really hope Kong does the frustration purge and return i have had to do in the past, because id like for him to be back sooner than later, but we all kinda need it from time to time. Its a healthy move imo. Still, i like the open discussion, to talk abotu whatever, i really hope that doesnt go away or doesn’t at least get heavily policed.

  5. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Can Rowe make the switch to safety

I thought Rowe played S last year?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He did, and I thought he looked a lot better, but it was a short span, maybe 2-3 games.

    • D's avatar D says:

He originally was an emergency move to S, they covered that both in some interviews with he and Flo, and basically it panned out so well he stayed there. He can and did cover the TE’s really well and so that in itself has been an Achilles heel for us in the past, so imo, keep him right there.

  6. D's avatar D says:

I also think that in the secondary, Flo likes cover guys who aren’t afraid to help tackle if need be but ultimately, he probably considers the secondary to be all CB’s, 4 to 5 of them on the field at a time, and no enforcer type, which to me is a smart philosophy. Stop hiding from your deficiencies in the front 6-7 and address it, stop the run there, dont have a guy out there mostly because you cant. Thats a really weak way to address a problem.

  7. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

While Flores says Rowe has room for improvement against the run, there is no denying the strong work he has done in coverage since moving from cornerback to safety after two-time Pro Bowl selection Reshad Jones was sidelined with a chest injury in October.

  8. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

D – That’s what I meant, everyone try to keep themselves in check. I don’t want to police the blog, never did, never will.

    • D's avatar D says:

Its inherently easier to police your reactions to things. Its snowballs from a single statement most of the time, so that means it was one person supplying the spark and a whole lot of others throwing on the gasoline. The spark is just spark without the fuel. Again, i am as guilty of it as anyone, but i have been trying hard to control it recently. It isnt easy, but you cant stop the sparks, you arent in control of that, so control what you can control and everything will stay pretty close to even. I mean its actually not at all bad here compared to most places on the internets lol. Trust me, you want to see ugly, go read one twitter thread, i mean it could be about kittens and then its raping nuns before you get done with the thread.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No, I agree, but I’d rather see someone leave here upset that someone called them out because they thought Howard was going to get 1500 yards this season instead of leaving upset because of politics. I know it’s part of what makes it interesting here, especially in the lean times w/o football, but I’m hoping now that football is back we can keep it mostly football.

      • D's avatar D says:

Im good with it, there is really no harm to your suggestion, just throwing in my two cents. I would like for us to continue to talk abotu things, i do really read and take a lot to heart. Sometimes its just seeing a person passion for their opinion, and sometimes its reading between the lines of their comments but it give me a richer understanding of their perspective and a little more about them as well.

  9. D's avatar D says:

Oh, just as an update, since i had involved you guys in my concerns over my son, possibly catching Covid at school, he tested negative for Covid. So looks like we are good. We both came down with a stomach bug before we got the results back from the DR. so at one point i was kind of concerned but both came and went in 24 hours, and then got the final confirmation yesterday that he is negative.

Thanks again for all that passed on well wishes and prayers/thoughts when i brought it forward. It is very appreciated.

  10. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Damn, RIP Diana Rigg

  11. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Nice article Mike E. I am also of the opinion that this blog is not really the forum for political discussion. I am not saying you cannot talk politics here but I view this site where I can go to escape the everyday bullshit and talk football and follow my favorite team. My politics generally do not generally align with most of the posters here which is fine. But when I do want to talk politics I do it in other forums

  12. D's avatar D says:

Its going to be a weird year of football i think. Just completely odd. Not just the no fans thing, not just the players flopping in and out of the lineup due to covid exposure, but all together weird. I bet any predictions anyone has had so far can be thrown out the window and by the time the season is over we are going to be thinking to our selves WTF just happened lol.

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ken, I didn’t take it personally. It just puts a wedge between some of us so if we can limit that, it would be nice

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

We should limit it when we can

We should also let the blog be fluid and let people bring their own flavor too

We should also be ourselves and not hesitate to state our opinions so that we can enjoy it like everyone else too

So it’s a delicate balance to strike

I for one intend to approach it like a bull in a china shop….😄

  14. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

All I want on Sunday is for the OL to look good, even if we lose. Less variation in how an O-line plays game to game. So what we see should be what we get the rest of the way.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Don’t judge them too harshly in week 1
It’s a bunch of young players

But I’m with you – that’s the most important thing early on t
      In the season

If the game is a 6-3 snooze fest but the OL grinds out a lot of rushing yards – it will be a little slice of bacon

  15. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Anyone notice these fat guys that have YouTube channels about sports, like Fansided (Reason), all seem to be full of themselves.

    • D's avatar D says:

Whats funny to me is the ones that seem the most full of themselves are the guys i bet never played a snap in their entire lives. I mean i get pouring yourself into the understanding of something, but it really should leave you humbled to know you dont have the full perspective if you haven’t played.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I Really don’t get much info from YouTube channels
Sometimes I get some interesting tidbits about draft prospects from people who actually watch the prospects

But post game analysis and rankings and that sort of stuff about the nfl. I really don’t that stuff. Some local stuff from people that watch the dolphins over and over again is good though – but amateurs talking about the nfl on YouTube channels is ally worse than the blowhards on espn doing table talk

    • D's avatar D says:

The other thing is their track record, some of the more full of themselves guys are the ones that fucking miss 2 times out of 3, i mean WTF how do you bounce back from those kinda fail rates to puff up like a rooster.

  16. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Pig — “it will be a little slice of bacon”….. isn’t that like me saying would be a tasty chunk of human back meat? 🙂

  21. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Mike E — I’m a little concerned about this limited political discussion thing. Could hinder my NWO recruitment efforts. 🙂

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Apparently I am part of an international cabal that is ready to take over the world…… I gotta be able to make a call to our IT guy and make something happen (yeah I didn’t know what NWO was last night).

  22. D's avatar D says:

Speaking of back meat. I was watching this thing on Dahmer the other day, and interestingly enough is the story most of us heard about in the media is only partially true. So apparently he wasn’t into “eating human flesh” as much as he tried it, but it wasnt what he thought it would be. The parts he kept were for much crazier reasons.

In the special i saw he ate parts to basically have a part of them with him and he most did the things he did out of a desire to possess the person, to not have them leave him. He was homosexual and the lifestyle at the time (late 70’s through the 80’s) was love them and leave and after several relationships that he had being like that he started drugging guys so they wouldn’t leave the next day. When that stopped working he killed them and the body parts he kept in his fridge weren’t food they were building a human being out of the parts, a zombie/flesh golem that he could keep with him forever.

You know someone is fucked up that when you find out that more about how fucked up they were, you realize, yeah thats worse than cannibalism.

  23. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I have this “can’t wait for the season to start”, but I am nervous that it will not be completed feeling.

So far, the NFL seems to have mitigated the COVID effects within their own organizations. Once 16 teams travel and expose themselves, week after week, it gets a lot more dicey, imo.

  24. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Hopefully this is what our O-line looks like

Anyone here watch the show Mindhunters on Netflix?

  26. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

In Flo’s press conference one of our genius U75s asked him what he’s going to do, when watching tonight’s game, since we don’t play either team this year, and no one corrected him. Apparently we don’t play KC this year.

  27. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Just so some of you guys don’t throw out any bad mojo tonight we want KC to win, because…😉

  28. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, because in my comments last evening, I guess I literally called Mr. Stanger the LEADER of the NWO movement?!! WTF are some of y’all smoking?!! LMAO!!!

And some are still harping about me calling him a RINO? In his own words, Stanger said that the Republican Party left him, not the other way around. I get it (and I can respect it), but some of you fools don’t understand what he said?

Stanger, at least I know where you’re coming from… I RESPECT that, and understand (even if I don’t agree). And this post isn’t about you, but rather how some fools are trying to clown me with their total lack of reading comprehension.

What is WRONG with some of these people?

I’m happy to see that some on here are talking about getting away from the political rhetoric… GRAND! That’s going to make this place great again, IMO!

    • D's avatar D says:

I just said he shouldnt be worried about being a RINO. I stand by that, because i dont think its a bad thing. I am a RINO too, i mean im pretty conservative valued, but i cant say i dont agree with some of their social stances.

I don’t ever remember hearing it in the context of an event
According to Wikipedia the NAACP has referred to it as the black national anthem form about 100 years now

But I’m not sure that means it should be played as an alternative version….tha just kind of awkward

Meanwhile, it now appears Captain Steven Stamkos will miss the rest of the season. I see virtually NO WAY The Lightning can win the Stanley Cup without both Point and Stamkos. These “unconfirmed reports” have been wrong before, so, I’m hoping they are wrong again.

Ironically both continuing to protest and not moving on to a follow up action and the protest of the protest are counter productive at this point. Protesting once people have become accustomed to it means it no longer has its intended effect. Likewise protesting the protest, just fuels the desire to keep it going and its effectiveness. People should just learn to stop fucking fighting and start listening to one another, stop throwing shit in each others faces and start figuring out how to reach that compromise where the message is heard and acted on and therefore we can move on to something productive. This has way outlived its productiveness.

I agree with ya 100%. I never have had an affinity or anything more than a historical viewpoint with regards to the rebel flag. I both dont have any reverence for it nor hatred. My thought on it is if it causes a problem and the people in that state/local community/household have an issue with it. It should come down, and if not then leave it be. Its a flag and liking it doesnt make you a racist and hating it doesnt stop you from being a racist.

We spend so much effort attacking flags and words and national anthems and waste productive efforts towards fixing the underlying issues. Its like we are scared to face them, and we are just dooming ourselves to repeating it all the will fighting over silly objects.

This week, Miami is protecting cornerbacks Tae Hayes and Ken Webster, tight end Chris Myarick and Jake Rudock, who’s the team’s third quarterback.”

You crack me up. 2.8 million popular vote advantage. That means people.

Finally, we can talk about electoral votes and why we still have it in this day and age.

Seems antiquated to me and not a reflection of modern times.
    _______________________________________________________-

Let’s change the system that has always been in place without either side complaining until recently. let’s let states due to their size determine elections. to hell with smaller states.
let’s change the rules so we can have the advantage.
electoral college doesn’t fit our agenda.
let’s back rioting and blame it on trump.
let’s blame the virus on trump.
it’s the only way we stand a chance to take control of this country.
    we want power!
    typical hard left thinking.
maybe they should try to show how they can help the people instead of trying to destroy potus.

the hard left is very transparent

I know, had that feeling as well and many of us on here wanted him. Good for him to have a fantastic first NFL game. Though, he is definitely not a short yardage back. LOL He still plays much bigger than he is.

      • D's avatar D says:

He runs like a combo of Barry Sanders and Le’veon Bell. He kinda hides behinds blockers until he gets a crease and then breaks through, but he has some of the lateral and spin moves, to slip tackles too.

  96. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We’ve got the worst beat writers in the league. Tuned in on Byron Jones’ interview only to hear questions about Jalen Ramsey’s contract and national anthem bs…

    How about his injury?

He shuts the U75s up by responding he’s their to play and isn’t interested in being highest paid.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Seems like everytime I watch one of these they say we only have time for 1 more question, then Omar us called as if he’s an after thought.

Omar starts off by asking about Preston Parker, and Devonte…SMH

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Then Byron scratches his head and looks like he wants to shake it as well.

      • D's avatar D says:

I have noticed that too, like he seems to be the one where they are like, ok we have time for one more…..Omar….. and Omar tries to get creative and ask a question that very different from all the others, which i respect, but then its a dumb-ass question, or its not about them its about someone else, etc. I mean good for him not rehashing the same thing, but he needs to think it out a little more.

    • D's avatar D says:

I dont know how more players haven’t gone Beastmode on the reporters, and just show up and ignore all the dumb questions and leave as soon as their obligate time is up. I know for sure about the time i heard the second dumb-ass question phrased just slightly different i would be like fuck these people im tired of this shit. Its not just that they ask stupid questions, they all ask the same stupid ones, just asked in a different way.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Because they only have 1 question written down, and when someone before them asks the same question they don’t know how to adlib, hence U75.

I mean I could ask these guys several questions without writing it down.

Byron how’s the Achilles feeling? Will you be a full go on Sunday? How do you feel about the secondary being a shutdown group.

  97. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yes that Houston loss improves our draft 1st round pick from them. Great thing about it also is they have to play the Ravens next week then have to travel to Steelers in week 3. They also have 2 tough foes in their division they have twice in the Titans and Colts.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Houston looked better than I thought they would early, but only had 7 pts late in the game.

I think they missed Nuke bigtime, but D Johnson looked like his old self.

Hearing the reason they traded Nuke made sense, couldn’t pay him 27M and Watson 39M.

      • D's avatar D says:

Thier defense looked fairly good on the front 7, and their DB’s weren’t too shabby. Their offense though looked really weak, but again, KC’s defense looked really solid too, Chris Jones is becoming the new Aaron Donald, and maybe even more effective because his size helps close gaps, but still i didn’t think anything really stood out and there wasn’t any real threat by an offense that is built to really threaten a D. I think their receivers aren’t physical enough and KC’s DB’s just kinda kpet them off their routes. They definitely missed Hopkins, and while the Johnson acquisition was a good one it seems, i dont think it helps their offense more than Hopkins.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It would be awesome if they start out 0-3

Starts like that sometimes lead to everyone claiming injuries, and sitting guys as precautions and blaming each other

And their coach already made some controversial moves

So they are right on the edge of an internal breakdown anyway

Rooting for another team to have a devastating season is a little weird….

But think about what we can do with a top 5 pick next year

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I see the Texans starting off like the Steelers did last year, 0-3, because of a tough starting schedule, but then kicking it in gear and finishing 8-8 give or take a win.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

In other words, I think they’re right there with us at about 8-8.
