2020 Season – Week 1 – Dolphins @ Patriots

This is easily the strangest opening to a season that I can remember. I don’t recall knowing this little about our team at this point of the season, just 3 days before our season opener. What I do know is our team is a very young team, 2 of the young ones pictured will likely determine our success or demise this Sunday. Rookie starting LT Austin Jackson is getting his first start of hopefully a very long successful career but it will be difficult task going up against a Bill Belichick team. It doesn’t matter what the names are on the New England defense, he will disguise and confuse even the savviest OL, so both Austin Jackson (LT) and big Solomon Kindley (RG) will have to be on point. If you were to subtract the age of our starting QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, we’re trotting out a very young team. Jackson (21), Flowers (26), Karras (27), Kindley (23) and Davis, the elder statesman at 29. Devante Parker (27), Preston Williams (23), Jakeem Grant (27), Mike Gesicki (24), Durham Smythe (25), Jordan Howard (25) and Chandler Cox (24). The average of the 12 listed (including both TE Durham Smythe and FB Chandler Cox) is 25 years old. Throw in these important factors, very little practice time, no preseason games, a lot of new faces put together, facing a seasoned master in Bill Belichick and there is a chance that many things can go wrong. On the other hand, I think Flores will have our team prepared and I do believe we can see success against the Patriots this Sunday.

That was just our offense, our defense is quite young as well. I’ll spare you the lists with ages but the average age is 25.5 years old. LB Kyle Van Noy is the elder at 30 on the defense. The depth is really young as well, on both sides. It’s a great start in year 1 of the rebuild, it really is. Yes, it was disappointing to jettison Raekwon McMillan who no longer fit our needs because we’ve been doing this for a long time, drafting talent, changing schemes and then purging the talent that doesn’t fit. Hopefully with Flores and Grier we’re done with that cycle. Picking up WR/RB/QB Lynn Bowden from the Raiders make me think we’re not going to be the 1 WR, 2 TE rushing attack a lot of the time. I think we’re looking for playmakers all over the place and in today’s NFL, that’s wise. You have to score to keep up. Nothing like being able to run a game out but you have to be up in order to do that. You can’t stop the best teams from scoring, that’s a fact. You have to be able to keep up. I don’t really know what to expect from our defense. I know we have really shored up the back end with a quality secondary by adding Byron Jones to Xavien Howard for s shutdown duo of CB’s and a fine young rookie NB in Noah Igbinoghene. Bobby McCain will be the centerfielder while Eric Rowe will likely be closer to the LOS. What will be interesting to see how we use the LB’s and DL and in what combinations. Baker and Roberts will patrol the middle with Ogbah and Van Noy on the outside. Of course there will be various formations and Lawson and Strowbridge and Van Ginkel will be a part of. Looking forward to seeing all the pieces in play and even if we’re not successful this Sunday, at least hoping we see signs that things are going to be better.

I look forward to seeing DeVante Parker starting strong and seeing Preston Williams all the way back from injury. Can Jakeem Grant hold off the competition for slot play from Mack Hollins, Malcolm Perry and Lynn Bowden? Will we actually be able to run the ball effectively? Will our young OL be able to pass protect for Ryan Fitzpatrick or will he be running for his life as he did last season. Will our front 7 be able to generate a pass rush for a change? Will the three headed CB combo of Howard, Jones and Iggy be one of the NFL’s best? Can Rowe make the switch to safety and is Bobby Mac ready to resume his role of safety and stay healthy? A lot of questions loom, as the even bigger question that is silent at the moment, but you know when does Tua play is lurking not so stealthily in the shadows. It’s there, because as soon as Fitz has his bad day, it will rear it’s ugly head and be right there in the forefront. For now at least, it hides.

Keep in mind that Bill Belichick desperately wants to answer the question “Was it Belichick or Brady” with a resounding Belichick! Tom Brady, sickeningly so has been anointed NFC MVP and is already in the fucking Superbowl against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. It’s disgusting! I guess the NFL needs a storyline and now instead of seeing New England Patriots 24/7 it’s the freaking Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Brady every second. I think Brady has the better chance to succeed with all that talent on the roster but never count the master Belichick out. True, he won’t have his stalwart QB Brady running the offense anymore and I’m not much of a Cam fan, I think he’s been one of the most overrated QB’s in the game. I don’t think he deserves a marquis, he’s a JAG. If he’s healthy, he’s a threat to run and I think that’s where he’s most dangerous to the opposition. If he’s back there slinging it, I think he’s more dangerous to his own team. It’s going to be fun watching this game, so many angles to come together to make this game a must watch.

GO DOLPHINS!!

    Big year for Ian Book
    —————————-
Yeah, too bad he was “meh” today but he knows how to win.

TE #87 Michael Mayer for ND looks like he is going to be a good one!

  2. stangerx says:

What these all have in common is they were wildly popular on the internet last week. Well that and they are completely false. Be careful where you get your info from .
    ——————————————
A total of 19,888 fake driver’s licenses that were made in China and seized at the O’Hare International Airport were all registered to vote as Democrats.

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden wants to introduce a 3% annual federal tax on your home.

The sports apparel company Nike was quoted saying it could “afford to let go of all ‘Make America Great Again’ customers.”

Photo shows former President Barack Obama with Judge Emmet Sullivan, who is holding up the dismissal of the case against Michael Flynn.

  3. bailbondmike says:

19,888 fake driver’s licenses story is true. They were intercepted/seized at O’Hare coming from Hong Kong and China, however, there is no evidence that it is linked to voting.

  4. Krishna says:

Bbm… perhaps I should not have said on the map. However, I only know him as UT’s coach. I think that’s a different level than UNC.

His first year as head coach of UT, was his first year with Ricky. I watched many games and many decisions. I think he only won one Big 12 championship.

I thought he should/could have done more recruiting Texas…..lol, what a hotbed of talented football players. Brees was in is back yard. Never seemed to like the local talent.

Record counts, but could he have done more with what he had. I think so. I wanted him to.

    • Krishna says:

I thought the whole Chris Simms, Major Applewhite QB issue was handled poorly.

The memories are coming back. Yikes!

    • bailbondmike says:

Yeah, he was on a bigger stage there than UNC for sure especially with the history of Texas football. You would think with the right coach, Texas should/could dominate the Big 12 like Alabama does the SEC. He never seemed to get them quite there except when he had Vince Young. All those double digit win seasons but there would always be a bonehead loss that would F-up their ranking and cause them to miss the BCS.

  5. Tim Knight says:

Anyone hear any recent reports that the smoke from the fires out west could potentially cancel the SF/ARZ game?

    • CavalierKong says:

They’ve mentioned it on local radio as a possibility, but we don’t know anything more about the likelihood than what you’re seeing in national reports.

What I can say is it has been indescribably apocalyptic out here the last few days. So much smoke that it has been overcast, dark, and foggy (not hazy, foggy) with smoke all day throughout Sacto. The sun doesn’t even look real in the sky.

Today is a LOT better than it has been the last 3 or 4 days, so maybe that is a good sign, but that doesn’t mean it’s better in Santa Clara where the Niners play.

    • son of a son of a shula says:

      I haven’t heard anything

  6. CavalierKong says:

When I go home from work, I’ve got a thin layer of ash on the car and the same on the ground. It’s pretty crazy. I wouldn’t want to be playing football for 3 hours, exercising, breathing hard, and taking in all that ash. If it’s bad in Santa Clara tomorrow, I think it’s a real possibility the game will be cancelled.

    • Tim Knight says:

Scary stuff, bro. Does anyone have any solutions on how to prevent these fires? It seems this happens every year now.

      • steveccnv says:

You have dry forests, because of no rain, Santa Ana winds blowing, and too many people, and they keep allowing more in. Too many people causes people to move further out into BLM, where many of these fires start. You live in a dry forest your house is prone to fire.

So to answer your question, quit opening up BLM, and allow subdivisions there. The fires will still be there, they just won’t be around houses.

  7. steveccnv says:

#1 QB FSU he sucks. Can’t throw, can’t read a D, can’t run the RPO, no pocket presence going forward, but is pretty good on the outside.

  8. Tim Knight says:

Steve, I get the dry forests but thanks for other intel. I guess it’s similar to people living below sea level. There is always a threat.

  9. son of a son of a shula says:

The long snapper for Wake Forest is from here in Oviedo he grew up right around the corner from me. I could hit his house from mine with a nine iron. I don’t know him or his family but my friend’s daughter and his older sister we’re good friends in high school. When my friend told me he was the long snapper it dawned on me that I used to always see that kid long snapping in his front yard.

  10. pheloniusphish says:

Ape – Sounds like Kuwait in 90/91.

  11. Mike E. says:

    Tomorrow, Miami Dolphins football! Stoked!!

  12. olddolphan says:

STEVE: GOTTA ADMIT I WAS SHOCKED as I watched VEGAS DOMINATE most of the game against Dallas YET Dallas found a way to win game 4!! This puts the Stars up 3-1 over the VGK. It will be very interesting to see if Vegas switches to FLEURY in goal for the all-important Game 5. Khudoban stood on his head for much of this game!! –He was sensational in goal for Dallas!!
    —————-
Meanwhile, The Lightning have problems of their own on the injury front. STAMKOS remains out for the rest of this series. And, if Brayden Point even makes an appearance tomorrow, I’ll be surprised as hell. The Bolts are 5-0 in O.T. games so far in these playoffs. I would not be shocked if tomorrow’s game also goes into OVERTIME!!
    ————–
AS SOON AS the Dolphins finish their victory over New England, Mrs. OD and I will switch over to the playoff hockey game. SURE BEATS watching the cornhole tournament on ESPN or their coverage of Korean baseball !!!!

  13. Tim Knight says:

So this looks like the 48 game man roster other than injuries etc.

    DT C. Wilkins
    DT D. Godchaux

    CB N. Igbinoghene

    OT J. Davenport

    TE M. Gesicki
    TE D. Smythe
    TE A. Shaheen

    WR D. Parker
    WR P. Williams

    RB J. Howard
    RB M. Breida
    RB M. Gaskin
    RB P. Laird
    RB M. Perry (returns/specialty)

    Special Teams:
    K Jason Sanders
    P Matt Haack
    LS B. Ferguson

    • The Flying Pig says:

So much better than last year

But I do worry that our WR and LB units are thin
Hoping those two rooks on the OL crush it

      • Tim Knight says:

We’re not deep everywhere which is to be expected. I don’t think LB is thin though. Not great but this group was targeted and hand picked in the offseason.

  21. ocalarob says:

looks like i’ll be off to the winger to watch the game, they have Indy and the Jags on here

  22. son of a son of a shula says:

Fitzpatrick will pass Troy Aikman, YA Tittle and Steve Young on the all time passing list possibly today. He’s 56 behind Aikman then 184 and 238 respectively behind the other 2.

  23. olddolphan says:

JUST MOWED THE LAWN in world record time (for a Great Grandfather)!! – – Tropical Storm Sally’s first outer bands hit Pasco County while I was walking the dog!! When it started raining HARD, my dog scrunched down and did his business!!! Reached for 3 dog biscuits, gave 2 to the dog and I ate the 3rd one!!!

    (JK on the 3rd one!)

  24. Mike E. says:

Clayton Fejedelem is OUT with a pec injury. I would think Kavon Frazier will be on the roster

  25. Ken says:

Not sure what to expect today or the season with this team or the league. We should be better but I am guessing there will still be some growing pains especially on the OL which has to come together as a unit under game conditions. However I am excited for the season and I am happy they are playing football

  26. steveccnv says:

11 rookies made the team, including Bowden, but no UDFAs. How many will be active today?

21 R and 2nd year players on the roster. Many will see significant PT.

29 including 3rd year players. That’s a very young team.

+7 4th year players, but only Godchaux was drafted by us.

Tua leads the way for these 36 players with a 5.5M cap hit, followed by Jesse Davis at 4.8M and Wilkins at 3.5M.

Cheats at 31.5M over the cap while we’re 16.5M over tells me how thin their roster really is mostly, because of the opt outs and players lost to FA.

This cheats team isn’t close in talent to what we’ve been accustom to seeing since 2000, so very winnable game today. Not sure how much of a belicheatian affect he can put on this game, but don’t think it’s too much.

  27. Mike E. says:

I think Rock had enough of all the Trumpers. He’s Biden his time now until it’s safe to come back. 😀

Does anyone here think Cam beats us through the air? I think if he does, it’s a product of not having enough practice time because I don’t think he’s got the goods to beat us that way. I wouldn’t be surprised if he beats us with his legs, but I feel like if we keep his running contained, he’s in trouble. Our secondary should make things miserable for him.

    • Tim Knight says:

We’ve had a couple of weeks to prepare for Cam and the RPO stuff. No teams have had any competition against other opponents so they’re all in the same boat. It’s not like there is no film on Cam to prepare for – like the pundits say, the Dolphins have no idea what’s coming. Really? I’d be more worried playing the Cardinals and Murray week one.

    • stangerx says:

If he beats us through the air it is gonna be in the middle…. but think our pass D is sound there too. It’s the rushing attack that worries me with this D…. and Cam is part of their’s.

  83. Ken says:

    Starting to get angry

  84. Mike E. says:

Someone needs to clean Cams clock or it’s gonna be a long day

  85. D says:

Id like to see them switch to a cover two bring in someone like Jones to spy Newton and bring the LBs in some

  86. ElephantRider says:

    Game 1 with no preseason…..

  87. Randy says:

So, I should be happy that I can’t find one fucking feed to watch the game then?

  88. D says:

    Football gods hate us lol

  89. ElephantRider says:

Nice shove by Gilmore. Fully extended his arms….gets the int. Fuck these refs.

  90. Ken says:

    That was lucky

  91. D says:

They have moved the LBs up. I’m glad to see that

  92. Ken says:

    Lot of time for Gaskins

  93. D says:

He had a nice cut back lane

  94. D says:

Big defensive series. Get it back keep the offense moving

  95. naplesfan2010 says:

All things considered, I think our OL is doing fine.

  96. New Age says:

Not too impressed with the blocking today but I knew it would be rough first game out.

  97. naplesfan2010 says:

Why am I hearing crowd noise?

  98. Ken says:

    Terrible job by Grant

  99. D says:

That fake crowd noise about made me crap my pants. I though right there at the end it said “ball, ball, ball” I was oh fuck Grant coughed it up.

  100. Mike E. says:

Naples, they’re allowed to pipe in a certain amount of crowd noise through the PA system

    • D says:

I dunno if it’s bring piped in to the stadium or if it’s part of the broadcast. Done of the broadcasts are adding it in for viewers

  101. D says:

Gaskin has been a pleasant surprise so far.

  102. Rockphin says:

Gaskin, the Huskies’ all-time rusher, closes his career with 5,323 yards, 57 rushing touchdowns, 5 TD receptions and 1 TD pass.

  103. son of a son of a shula says:

    Mask-cot

  104. Mike E. says:

D – I read that every team is allowed to pump a certain db level of crowd noise due to the lack of fans. Supposedly the NFL is monitoring each stadium to make sure they don’t exceed the db level

  105. Mike E. says:

    Grant redeems himself

  106. Rockphin says:

    GRANT MAN BOUNCES

  107. The Flying Pig says:

    What a bogus holding call

  108. son of a son of a shula says:

    Tua time?

  109. Mike E. says:

Grant Sr. looks more like Grant Jr. Oh, and fuck that bad decision by Fitz

  110. D says:

    Fitz didn’t read that right

  111. Ken says:

    What was Fitz thinking?

  112. The Flying Pig says:

In division news the bills are thrashing the jests

  113. naplesfan2010 says:

That was a double pick on that play to edelman

  114. naplesfan2010 says:

    Excellent penetration by wilkins.

  115. wyoming85 says:

    Wilkins balling!!!!!!!!!!

  116. Ken says:

    Wilkins starting to dominate

  117. Ken says:

So the Pats got 4 TO?

  118. son of a son of a shula says:

What the Folk was that? Lol

  119. The Flying Pig says:

I’ll take 7-3 at the half guys

  120. The Flying Pig says:

    On the road
    In New England
    After 2 turnovers

  121. son of a son of a shula says:

    Just after Tua clock

  122. stangerx says:

Gaskins has been a good surprise…… but where the heck was Howard in the 2nd half and Breida ain’t getting much play at all.

  123. stangerx says:

Best stat of the half for me — no sacks. Plus Fitz had time. And running game was working. Maybe the new OL is the one we’ve been looking for.

  124. naplesfan2010 says:

Wouldn’t be surprised to see tua start 2nd because Fitzgerald ruined his own momentum.

  125. Ken says:

Start with a surprise onside kick. That would be ballsy

  126. steveccnv says:

Gaskin and Wilkins are balking, don’t see much else. Secondary must be playing good.

  127. stangerx says:

Cam Newton in the half — 6 of 9 for 72 passing yards and 2 sacks.
Ain’t Brady’s Pats any more… or maybe our pass D is that good.

  128. The Flying Pig says:

Come on – don’t give that easy stuff up

  129. The Flying Pig says:

So once they start throwing slants they are an unstoppable juggernaut?

  130. son of a son of a shula says:

Foot went out before ball crossed

  131. steveccnv says:

    Not a TD

  132. The Flying Pig says:

Who cares….if they are at the 1 inch line instead it’s not much better

  133. steveccnv says:

That answers the question of who got the refs in the divorce

  134. D says:

Definitely out, but again we aren’t stopping them right now. Maybe we get to take a big shot on cam but that’s about it

  135. The Flying Pig says:

    Let see some offense Dolphins
    Move the ball

  136. The Flying Pig says:

That wasn’t even close to a TD

  137. son of a son of a shula says:

    Crap

  138. D says:

Definitely a PI but would been hard to call that live.

  139. The Flying Pig says:

    Incredible

We are one half into the season

  140. steveccnv says:

Did Wanny take over the playcalling on O?

  141. Tim Knight says:

I guess we didn’t watch any film on Cam. Our defense is acting like it’s Brady out there. SMH

  142. The Flying Pig says:

    DB is hugging Gesicki

  143. The Flying Pig says:

Its not exactly creative playcalling on offense

    Look alive Dolphins
    These games count
they look like they are sleepwalking through the game

  144. The Flying Pig says:

I’m about to stop watching this game

    It’s just making me miserable

  145. Tim Knight says:

Fitz INTs has killed two drives.

  146. The Flying Pig says:

It’s super boring to watch them run these trash play effectively

  147. New Age says:

Not encouraging signs for the run D this year. Still early but this game already looks very over and we look pretty bad. Still lots of work to do but every game counts.

  148. The Flying Pig says:

    We get a break!

  149. son of a son of a shula says:

    Sweet Baker

  150. New Age says:

    Fucking NE refs. EVERY GAME.

  151. Ken says:

    Awesome play by Baker

  152. Tim Knight says:

    Awesome play Jerome!

  153. The Flying Pig says:

    Roughing = tickling

  154. Tim Knight says:

Okay offense, get your heads out of you asses. Yes you Fitz!

  155. son of a son of a shula says:

    Preston

  156. son of a son of a shula says:

Grabbing Gesicki before the catch too

  157. son of a son of a shula says:

    On the one
    Put it in

  158. The Flying Pig says:

It’s amazing that they call that but not the earlier one

  159. son of a son of a shula says:

    Boom 💥

  160. The Flying Pig says:

    🎶🎶🎶
    And when you say Miami
    🎶🎶🎶

  161. son of a son of a shula says:

    💥👍🐬

  162. Ken says:

Nice job by the OL. Lindley on the QB sneak in particular

  163. son of a son of a shula says:

    Now get a stop Defense.

  164. The Flying Pig says:

    🐷 🐬🐷🐬🐷🐬

  165. Rockphin says:

Two picks but he makes it fun to watch

  166. Ken says:

    Stupid penalty

  167. The Flying Pig says:

That book sounds like firewood to me

  168. New Age says:

We are doing a shit job of contain.

  169. The Flying Pig says:

Challenge that spot – he was a yard short

  170. son of a son of a shula says:

    That was short
    But probably not in NE

  171. The Flying Pig says:

    Why was Baker ejected?

    Anyone see that?

  172. D says:

Newton was holding Baker down that’s why he pushed off him.

  173. The Flying Pig says:

Little things like Parker struggling with a hamstring really pisses me off more than anything

  174. Tim Knight says:

My streaming ended and I can’t get it back. I’m really annoyed at the NFL that I have to have a fucking dish. Fuck you! My day has been ruined when all I wanted to do was watch my team play a fucking game. Fuck you!

  175. naplesfan2010 says:

    Now newton is taunting wilkins.

  176. Ken says:

    Bad throw by Fitz

  177. Rockphin says:

    three picks…..

    Is it Tua time yet?

  178. Mike E. says:

Gesicki was tackled on that play. NO CALL! That’s some hot garbage!

  179. wyoming85 says:

Don’t worry Tim! Storm just knocked my feed out!

  180. Mike E. says:

Ken, that throw was to Gesicki who was being held and tackled while he’s trying to make a play and there was no call. Just watched it in slo-mo, it’s a fucking joke.

  181. son of a son of a shula says:

Man that’s terrible cheating by the refs. Egregious

  182. Ken says:

    That was PI

  183. Tim Knight says:

Cleveland is looking good though. LOL

  184. naplesfan2010 says:

Wilkins. Was that not pi on gesicki?

  185. Rockphin says:

    Man that was egregious. OMG

  186. The Flying Pig says:

  187. stangerx says:

Say they score instead of the INT. Like 1:30 left. Do they go onside kick or kick back to the Pats and burn their time outs hoping for a 3 and out?

  188. wyoming85 says:

Did we just play a game against NE with 1 holding call on the OL?????

  189. Tim Knight says:

I was not happy with our team played into the 3rd quarter when I was able to watch it.

Oh by the way, start Tua and let’s get the new era going. We’re not going to the playoffs with Fitz. We’re just prolonging the inevitable. I know it’s only one game but we’re all just waiting for the new era to begin. Start it next week.

  190. Rockphin says:

For Christ’s sake! Gesicki is going to have to get rape counseling after that play!

  191. The Flying Pig says:

I forgot how insufferable twitter was after a dolphins loss

  192. Mike E. says:

The Ravens just keep on winning. I felt like the Chiefs and the Ravens were the 2 safest bets this week. The Ravens just don’t win, they steamroll you. Will the Browns ever be good? I feel like they could have the 1st pick every year and they’ll still suck. They just can’t put it together, but the Ravens is a tough test early.

  193. The Flying Pig says:

Let’s see where this team is in a couple of weeks
I’m not going to give this game too much weight

  194. The Flying Pig says:

    Bring on the Bills

  195. Ken says:

This game is kind of what I expected. We are still a work in progress. I am a little disappointed in Fitz today he was a little sloppy with the ball

  196. Mike E. says:

Austin Jackson played well, and that sack wasn’t his fault. Fitz rolled right into where the defender was engaged with Jackson and Jackson had no idea Fitz was there. There was a play early in the game where Kindley was pulling and he moved so slow he never even touched the defender he was supposed to block. Behemoth is not great on the move, better in a phone booth.
