Week 3 – Dolphins @ Jaguars

So here comes Week 3 already, and it’s a short week for us Dolphins fans. Here we are at 0-2. Game 1 we didn’t really compete. Game 2 we were in it till the last minute, but in both games there was one clear message. This defense just isn’t in sync yet. Flores says it’s communication issues which in many ways is understandable. We all knew so many new faces getting thrown together is a tough situation, especially when you compound that with less practice time, and no preseason games. It’s easy to get frustrated watching them, considering all the money we spent in free agency on the defensive side of the ball, Kyle Van Noy, Shaq Lawson, Emannuel Ogbah etc. We didn’t stop in free agency either, with our third pick in the first round of the 2020 draft we selected Auburn DB Noah Igbinoghene. We continued with defense in RD 2 with DL Raekwon Davis from Alabama, and in RD 3 we selected S Brandon Jones from Texas. We continued to fortify the DL with Jason Strowbridge and Curtis Weaver in RD 5, but as we have well documented here, Weaver is gone. In any case, it’s clear we needed to work on the defense, but the early returns are not promising.

It’s funny, these 2 teams at this moment in time are 2 teams that are quite different as far as outlooks are concerned. Everyone was sure the Jaguars were looking to draft Trevor Lawrence in 2021 and threw in the towel. Now, in some ways they’re the talk of the town as a high-flying exciting team. They’re 1-1 and are +4 in points scored/points allowed. The Dolphins are 0-2 and are -13. Gone are Yannick Ngakoue and Leonard Fournette and yet this team has the arrow pointing up. Our Dolphins? This game will say a lot in that regard. After a tough loss to the Bills in which this team competed well, the arrow is slightly up, but a loss to the Jags and an 0-3 record will change that. Hard to say game 3 is a pivotal game because it’s still early, but a loss tonight, especially a bad loss could be bad for this team.

Byron Jones is apparently playing, but of course, how long and how effective he is we have no idea. I’d bet Iggy Mahogany is getting lots of reps outside to be ready. Not sure how correct Ourlads depth chart is but it shows 3rd RD draft pick Brandon Jones at SS with Bobby Mac at FS. I guess Jones is going to get his shot. I thought our depth and our strength was our secondary. Byron Jones, Xavien Howard and Noah Igbinoghne. Bobby Mac at safety again with Eric Rowe, and then all those guys as depth like Brandon Jones, Clayton Fejedelem and Kavon Frazier. So far, we haven’t been able to find the right mix, and our lack of offense has made it tougher on the defense.

As far as the offense is concerned, it’s been odd so far. We picked up Jordan Howard and in the draft when we were all getting quite upset at the fact that we ignored the RB position, the trade for Matt Breida soothed us. Well, after 2 games, Howard and Breida have 25 carries combined and Breida has 2 receptions. It’s been last year’s 7th RD pick that has received more playing time and nearly double the touches of either Howard or Breida. He’s done well in that role, and that’s the important thing. I’d rather a coach play the guy that gets it done over the guy who cost more or was drafted higher, but it’s surprising nonetheless.

What’s been great so far is watching the rise of TE Mike Gesicki. He really came on towards the middle of last season and this season has continued that rise. After 2 games this season Gesicki has 11 receptions for 160 yards and 1 TD. WR Isaiah Ford is getting it done as well, and unfortunately, the nagging injuries have once again found Devante Parker. He’s in the lineup so give him that, but he’s hampered for sure. Preston Williams has the shine dull a bit as he hasn’t been a big part of the offense at all, but he is coming back from and ACL tear. Jakeem Grant hasn’t really been involved and Lynn Bowden has yet to be active, something that will continue for a while until he’s learned enough to hit the field.

Have you noticed that I’m 6 paragraphs in and I HAVEN’T MENTIONED THE O-LINE? It’s amazing, but this is one unit that is moving in the right direction. It’s a pleasure not to feel the need to ridicule this unit, and although they aren’t a top unit, they aren’t keeping the team from accomplishing what they want on offense. Thankfully, holding calls aren’t being called like they have in previous seasons, they’re letting it go somewhat to keep the game flowing, and I’m enjoying it. Austin Jackson, Ereck Flowers, Ted Karras, Solomon Kindley and Jesse Davis. All of them have played every snap to their credit. Pretty impressive I’d say. You have to be pleased knowing they aren’t the problem. I said it, the O-line isn’t a problem. Feels good.

So is it really Ryan Fitzpatrick vs Garner Minshew? Hardly. James Robinson (undrafted) has been a big part of the offense, and Gardenr Minshew has played well throwing 6 TD’s with only 2 INT’s. Fitz has 2 TD’s and 3 INT’s but one of those INT’s was the garbage no-call PI at the end of the game by the Patriots. Still, Minshew is putting points on the board and not turning it over. I don’t really know what to expect tonight, will it be a shootout or a conservative close to the vest affair? Will we see more of Jordan Howard, or will Myles Gaskin be the bellcow? Will DeVante Parker be a factor? Will the defense make its presence felt? Stay tuned, tonight at 8:20PM on NFLN or your local channel affiliate. Enjoy!

In perhaps the most Ryan Fitzpatrick stat ever, Ryan Fitzpatrick has now beaten the Jaguars for six different teams

My biggest disappointment of the night was watching pre and post game analysis

Wow those guys in espn and nfl network don’t think much of the The Dolphins

I actually heard them say maybe the Jaguars didn’t take them seriously

Who do they think the jaguars are?
The Dolphins are a better team than the jaguars
It’s the Dolphins that can make the leap to be a playoff team this year – not the jaguars
Why would anyone on earth talk up the jaguars who lost a ton of players this offseason and last year

I had this game circled on our schedule as the easiest game early on

Yes we didn’t play good early on this season
But sometimes I feel like these guys don’t actually watch a lot of football and they just get their information from listening to each other

I tend to agree with them, because we can be a trainwreck on any given Sunday. Good thing we played on Thursday😉

The Jags almost beat a very good Tenn. team, and upset the Colts. We shat the bed against NE and were pretenders against Buffalo.

Wyoming’s post form Van Noy: “Flo’s been kicking our ass” (something like that) … Thursday road game and the team played so much better, especially the defense.

Line of scrimmage play was definitely better on both sides of the ball.

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Phelon – No commitment to the run game? We rushed 28 times, 36 if you count Fitz’s 8 rushes. I’ll take that every game!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You can’t commit to something that isn’t working, especially when you need to score on a given drive. We committed late in the game to it, because time was more important.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Oi! Maybe I am so used to seeing it that I didn’t recognize it.

More accurate to say that they are not yet a reliable running team. Can’t count on picking up short yardage.

  7. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I thought the playcalling last night was mostly very good. On D I really liked the no one in a 3 or 4 pt stance, it seemed to confuse them.

  8. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think the Jags have a very good offense, and can be tough to stop with the bowling ball Robinsin and that WR that was tough to tackle. Their D seems to be lacking.

  9. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I’m just glad there were a lot of 7-9 yard runs on first down so they would count v 10+ and you have to throw them out in 1st down average run stats.

  10. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Van Ginkel shined at just the right time, didn’t notice him much early on.

  11. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The start to this season has mostly been a disappointment. Flores gets somewhat of a pass, because of the offseason stuff, but he’s on notice (double secret probation)😏

  12. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I don’t think Flores is on notice or Tua should be in any “starting” discussion. It’s been 3 games with no preseason. We have a brand new team.

With that said, always believed D would be ahead of O early in season. Not this year or at least first two games. Glad Flo is kicking some ass.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So you set the club record for completion percentage in a game — does that mean reporters and fans won’t talk about getting you yanked out of the next game?

  13. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They’ll give Flores plenty of time, Ross has said as much, but he’s on notice for me as being that next great coach, that some gave anointed him, based on winning a couple of meaningless games with no talent.

It doesn’t matter what jersey Ryan Fitzpatrick wears when he plays the Jacksonville Jaguars. Take your pick of a half-dozen different team uniforms. All of them have led to one result: victory.

Fitzpatrick on Thursday night became the first NFL player since at least 1950 to record at least one victory for six different teams against a single opponent, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. It was an accomplishment only Fitzpatrick could achieve. After leading the visiting Miami Dolphins to a 31-13 victory at TIAA Bank Field, the well-traveled quarterback has now defeated the Jaguars as a member of the Dolphins, Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans and New York Jets.

Fitzpatrick celebrated afterward by donning a paisley shirt that he left largely unbuttoned, exposing a thatch of chest hair that nearly matched his overgrown beard. After a night in which he completed 12 consecutive passes at one point, including one to himself, he was clearly enjoying himself.

Coach says spreading the ball around is very important. Create issues for the opponent when they have to guard everyone. Force them to defend every inch of the field, we were able to do that early. I wish we would’ve sustained it better in the second half.

Last night was “just the second time since at least 2000 that Miami has been able to log three straight touchdowns to start a game. The other occurrence came against the Buffalo Bills back in 2011.”

  19. the offense works better when a play is moving presnap, there are some next gen stats that list the teams offenses, and how the offenses gain more yards when they have more movement before snaps

then i noticed Miami doing alot of presnap moving, and those plays were successful for the most part

One thing that stood out to me last night is that this is not the Devante Parker of old. He was clearly not 100% but yet he was on the field and making plays in fact he was our leading receiver. Years past he would have found a way not to be on the field. Way to go Devante

MORE HIGH DRAMA FROM THE STANLEY CUP FINALS IN EDMONTON! Tampa Bay limited Dallas to just 3 shots on goal in the 1st period, BUT 2 OF THEM WENT IN!!! Just when things looked REALLY BAD for the Bolts, Brayden Point scored a sensational goal in the final 20 seconds to bring Tampa Bay to just a 2-1 deficit after one period.

POINT SCORED AGAIN about 2 minutes into the 2nd period and the game was tied at 2. A mad scramble in front of Vasilevskiy ended with the puck, somehow, in the back of the net and Dallas was back on top 3-2. But the Bolts tied the game late in the period and, as the 3rd period begins, the game is tied 3-3. YET ANOTHER OUTSTANDING GAME in this already memorable Stanley Cup Finals!!

    MORE TO COME!

  39. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

EACH TEAM scored a goal in the wild and woolly 3rd period and so here we are WITH ANOTHER OVERTIME GAME, one of so many that have taken place in these playoffs! —NEITHER goalie looks sharp tonight. SO I EXPECT someone to score a goal in the VERY FIRST OVERTIME PERIOD!! A goal by the Lightning would give them a 3-1 lead in these Finals. A goal by Dallas will square this series at 2-2!!
    —————————————–
ON ANOTHER totally different topic, the MIAMI MARLINS CLINCHED A PLAYOFF SPOT tonight with a 4-3 10-inning win over the Yankees in Yankee Stadium. Keep in mind the fact that the Marlins have NEVER LOST A PLAYOFF SERIES IN THE HISTORY OF THE FRANCHISE!! —And, they’ve NEVER WON a regular season division title, despite winning TWO WORLD SERIES!!–I think it’s safe to say the franchise WILL LOSE their first playoff series ever THIS SEASON!! –Meanwhile, the TV networks must be shuddering at the thought of a Tampa Bay-Miami WORLD SERIES between the two franchises with the lowest attendance in the Major Leagues!!—A few weeks ago, I suggested these two teams, both used to playing in front of DOZENS of fans, might have an unfair advantage in these playoffs. WELL, here they are!! –DEAL WITH IT!!

  40. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

WAAAAAAHOOOOOOO!!!!!! —As predicted, Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals tonight DID, INDEED, end early in the FIRST OVERTIME PERIOD!! Short-handed for the first 3 minutes of O.T., the Lightning held off Dallas’ power play with the help of some big saves by Vasilevskiy. Then, just over 3 minutes later, the Bolts found themselves on a power play. Defenseman Shattenkirk drilled the winner past the Dallas goalie and, BOOM–The Lightning are now up 3 games to 1 in this best of 7 series!! ONE MORE WIN WILL DO IT!!!!!
    ——————
Game 5 is only about 21 hours away!! The Tampa Bay Lightning have ALL THE MOMENTUM!!!—
And, they have a rested captain, Steven Stamkos, who sat out tonight’s game so he could better prepare for what he hopes will be THE CLINCHER!!

We were playing not to give up big plays for pretty much the whole second half. I don’t think that was an adjustment to how we’ll play every week. You can’t play that way without a big lead. We still didn’t have very good pressure from the edges. It just kinda looked like we did because the Jags were throwing constantly to try to catch up, so we were able to rush the passer a lot. The energy was definitely there though. Guys were bringing it. Just the way it looked to me.

  44. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Randy – I think they played that way on D partly because of the lead, and also because Byron Jones was out and they didn’t want to put to much pressure after a tough game on Iggy. I think once Jones is back they go right back to the press.

  45. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Watching Finsiders recap the game. They didn’t like that we took our foot off the gas in the 2nd half, but then said, Parker was playing with an injury…so there’s your reason to take your foot off the gas.

They also didn’t like Aikman and Buck sucking the Jags off.

  46. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Phish,
Yeah, I don’t like going to prevent offense so early, but I understand why they did it when you’re up like that. It worked. What I didn’t like was our inability to run the ball when we wanted to. If you’re gonna go to the running game to burn clock, you’d like to see a little more production. Nitpicking after a win.

  47. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,
Possibly, but they definitely put Iggy on an island earlier in the game without too much concern. He was getting caught looking in the backfield a little too much. I think they’d have played the same way with Jones in there. You can just rotate your prevent shell away from his side if you want to. As I said, it worked, so ya can’t fault them too much. Good win.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I like watching Iggy play, he’s an aggressive sonofagun. He had a tough week last week and I thought even times when he had good position and coverage on Diggs Allen threw the ball well where he couldn’t get it. You might be right about just playing conservative and not having anything to do with Iggy. My instincts were to think it was because Jones didn’t play and Iggy struggled a bit last week but you might be right. You know better than I do anyway.

It’s fun to play next to a guy like that – a guy that can come in and really move bodies and clean out the pocket on certain things. And then Austin Jackson, 21 years old playing left tackle in the league, that’s very, very impressive and I told those guys last night that I am very impressed with them, proud of them and they’re doing just a lot of great things.”

    – Ted Karras (yeah he’s their linemate he’s not talking about how tough it is for a rook to adjust to the NFL either)

I can’t complain one bit about our OL play. 4 new guy, 2 young rookies, that’s usually a recipe for disaster.

My concern for next week is Wilson. Our DE’s have no speed to chase him. Wilson will have a lot of yards scrambling if we don’t contain him. We will need Byron Jones back since they have possibly the next Megatron in DK Metcalf at 6’4″ 228, 4.33 speed and 40″ verticle. Wilson has the best supporting cast he has ever had in his receiving corps with the addition of the ageless Greg Olsen at TE, RB duo of Carson/Hyde and a solid OL.

IMO, this is the best offense we will have faced this season so far.

We will definitely need to have a solid running game and put together some long time consuming drives like we did against Jax.

STEVE CCNV; You’re welcome. It’s pretty unusual to have back-to-back playoff games in the NHL. But the big wheels in the NHL (and their SPONSORS) did NOT want to buck a full slate of NFL games on Sunday. So, scheduling Game 5 Saturday Night and Game 6 (if there is one) on Monday Night made more sense to them. FROM a Lightning point of view, playing tonight is a huge plus, given the boost they’ve gotten from winning the last 3 games. Dallas probably WON’T make any wholesale changes, given the short amount of turnaround time from last night’s game.

If the Bolts’ do win it tonight, they will end the playoffs with just ONE loss in the opening round, one loss to the Bruins, one loss to the Islanders and one loss in the Finals to Dallas.
    THAT’S PRETTY DAMNED IMPRESSIVE!!

Gaskin is the biggest surprise on the team so far this year IMO. Good vision, speed and power. He is consistently breaking tackles, and at least a few times a games he turns a loss into a 2 or 3 yd gain. Those are small plays on the stat sheet, but huge for keeping drives alive.

OD, that doesn’t help me. lol Both teams have 3 defensive players who fit our D to keep an eye on.
    Texas:
    OLB Joseph Ossai 6’4″ 245, (2 seasons) 188 tackles, 6 sacks, 2 FF, 2 INT’s
    Safety/Nickelback BJ Foster 6’2″ 210, (2 Seasons) 81 tackles, 5 sacks, 2 INT’s 6 PD’s
    Safety/Nickelback Caden Sterns 6’1″ 207, (2 seasons) 125 tackles, 2 sacks, 4 INT’s, 6 PD’s
Both safeties are hitters. Texas may be becoming Safety U. since we drafted one already from them this year.

    LSU:
NT Tyler Shelvin 6’3″ 346, no need to put up stats on him. He is a massive man in the middle. He is very athletic and quick off the snap for his size. Stout run defender/very hard to move him off his position and he commands double teams.
    S/LB Hybrid Jacoby Stevens, 6’2″ 230, 127 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 4 INT’s, 11 PD’s
    LB Jabril Cox 6’4″ 231, (transfer from ND State) (3 seasons) 258 tackles, 32 TFL, 14 sacks, 6 INT’s

Jacoby Stevens and Jabril Cox from LSU are the only seniors in the bunch but all are predicted to be in the 2021 draft.

YET EVEN MORE DRAMA FROM EDMINTON TONIGHT!! And, with the top 2 college football games on TV being lopsided, I’d say that a lot more viewers are watching the Stanley Cup Finals tonight. They’ve seen a good one, so far.

BOTH goalies have played far better tonight than they did in last night’s 5-4 O.T. thriller. Thus the 1-1 tie at the end of two periods. However, Tampa Bay continues to out shoot Dallas (21-15 so far) and this does NOT bode well for the team from Texas. Ondreg Palat seems to be flying around the rink this evening. And the goal he scored certainly was a thing of beauty.

I thought the same at the beginning of the year when I saw he transferred to run the air raid offense being brought to Miss State. What I don’t like about him is his lack of mobility. It’s tough to say bc she’s only been a judge since 2017

  87. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    What Son said

It’s not like Trump (or Biden) is proposing anti-gay marriage legislation

But if there’s a new Supreme Court case on the subject that comes up from a state that wants to ban gat marriage and she’s on the Supreme Court, she’s the vote that turns 5-4 the other way around

    So that’s her affect
I don’t think she’s the kind of person to invite people into her personal life
She’s not like an angry homophobe or anything
She’s just a hardcore originalist (to the extent we can judge her since 2017)
She would probably rule against Loving v VA too
It doesn’t mean she’s anti interracial marriage, it just means she doesn’t think it’s the place of the constitution

Honestly I don’t love the Supreme Court being the place for social issues either
So I get her point of view on it
But I wouldn’t risk the problematic affect to stand ceremoniously on originalism….but that’s just me
I would prefer aggressively legislative than relying on the court
But Congress has been a wet noodle for about a century now so here we are…

    Tim to answer your question
Gay marriage is not a explicitly in the constitution
The 5 judges that ruled in favor of it ruled that it was protected by the 14th amendment and so For now, it’s protected u dear the constitution

She’s fits the mold of some one who will do a 180
I think it’s might backfire when it’s said and done

I’m just basing my prediction on her leanings on things she said, who endorsed her and her public comments and writings
