Week 5 – Dolphins @ 49ers

I know, it’s Week 5 and already the QB controversy has begun. I believe there is a legitimate reason for there to be one. I don’t want to knock the Dolphins front office or any of the coaching staff but if Brian Flores is speaking true of Tua Tagovailoa, that he isn’t quite ready yet, the question is WHY? Health is not an issue, because Tua has been the gameday #2 QB which means if anything happened to Ryan Fitzpatrick Tua would be in the game. So let’s put health aside, and think back to before the Tua injury at Alabama, he was the top QB prospect, although Joe Burrow with his great Senior year was a close 2nd. So how is it that Joe Burrow started from day one? Justin Herbert taken one pick after Tua has now started 3 weeks due to the unfortunate medical circumstances with QB Tyrod Taylor. Undrafted Brett Rypien has started an NFL game due to injuries to Drew Lock and Jeff Driskel, and although it was against the NY Jets he still looked like he belonged completing 67% of his passes and a team high 7.4YPA. Yes, he threw 4 INT’s, but he was undrafted after all. So again I ask, why is Tua not ready?

I like and admire Ryan Fitzpatrick and our 1-3 record is certainly not all on him. If you watched the last game. We dominated TOP and had the ball more than 6 minutes more than the Seahawks. We ran 67 plays, 45 were Ryan Fitzpatrick pass attempts and another 6 were Ryan Fitzpatrick rushes. 51 of the 67 plays were Ryan Fitzpatrick. Isn’t that too much to come away with only TD? The one TD was a Ryan Fitzpatrick scramble. Listen, Fitz is playing his heart out, he’s doing whatever he can to win games but we’re not winning and I think it’s high time for them to spend more time doing whatever they have to do to get young Tua Tagovailoa ready to play.

This week we travel to SFO to play Darlene’s beloved 49ers. Talk about a team absolutely decimated by injuries, it’s unbelievable and they keep coming. The 49ers have quite the IR list, starting with DE’s Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas, CB Richard Sherman, WR’s Deebo Samuel, Tavon Austin, Jalen Hurd, RB Tevin Coleman, TE George Kittle was out 3 weeks and now QB Jimmy Garoppolo, DE Dee Ford, and RB Raheem Mostert are out with injuries. All I can say is it’s a good time to play the Niners. Kyle Shanahan has done a fine job at keeping this team competitive despite the volume of injuries as they are 2-2. QB Nick Mullins can play and this is by no means a gimme. George Kittle is back mostly healthy and was a monster last week and I would expect him to have another huge day against our defense.

It may not seem as if our defense has improved all that much but we do have 9 sacks through 4 weeks, I’m not sure we had 9 sacks all season last year. OK, that’s a joke. We had 23 sacks last season and right now we’re on pace for 36. You have to start somewhere. In our secondary, rookie Noah Igbinoghene has been targeted often and with much success. It was intended that Iggy play mostly in the slot with Byron Jones playing the boundary but Jones has been injured and unavailable, pressing Igbinoghene into a tough assignment. He’s a good player, and he will improve wherever he plays, count on it! I don’t know of Byron Jones status for week 5 but my guess is Iggy will be starting outside opposite X. Deebo Samuel is back after playing last week against Philly and Brandon Aiyuk, a very promising rookie will likely be the guy Iggy will be covering, so not an easy out.

One thing I take as a positive is that there was formal announcement regarding the status of the starting QB position with our team, so at least there is consideration or at a minimum awareness that a change may be necessary. As I stated earlier, besides getting the team ready to play the 49ers, they had better be dedicating as much time is necessary to make sure #1 is ready to play, I mean after all he’s the gameday #2, it’s kind of expected, no? Maybe Tua should be getting more practice reps, I doubt Fitz needs them at this point of his career, he can do it in his sleep. I hope they do everything in their power to make sure Tua IS ready, I think it’s just about that time!

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Where is ORob coming up with Tua doesn’t have a strong arm? Tua has a cannon.

I’d like to know where Tua is hiding his cannon? Let’s just say it’s good enough. Guys with much weaker arms have succeeded, like Joe Montana.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s not an elite arm but better than average. His ability to see the field and get rid of the ball quick with a quick release make his arm as good as it needs to be.

  2. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Fitz may be able to do it in his sleep, but you want the team practicing the plays that will be used for the current game, giving Tua most of the practice reps would be counterproductive.

  3. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Good post as always MikeE. I sort of feel the same way. However, when coach says Tua is not ready, I feel he means the offense is not ready for Tua. As you said, Tua is healthy and can play. That is why he is #2. I think they are buying more time to let the offense gel. Let everyone have the new offensive playbook down (orchestrated by the one who knows it best) which I think they should be there by now. If we see more Fitztragic this weekend against another injury depleted team, they have to pull the trigger and start Tua at Denver. Waiting to start him at home vs a good Chargers D would be a mistake IMO.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Shoot, I thought the DEN was a home game. I don’t mind if we start Tua at Denver anyway, I think that’s a good week to start him. We’ll see what happens this week. It’s just that feeling of going through the motions with Fitz as QB. We can be competitive, but if we’re not winning, let the kid play. My fear would have been the O-line but I feel like they’re good enough, and you can’t just wait for the ideal time because things constantly change in the NFL, so just do it!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I agree with that. I have had the DEN game as the game I think he should start his hopefully long and illustrious career. I just don’t like the “He’s not quite ready” rhetoric. I believe if he’s not ready, that’s on you, not him.

  16. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I think folks are underestimating just how much Fitz helps out our OL. He gets the ball out on time and scrambles pretty good. He helps make the OL look good.

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Randy – Do you know if Tua won’t be able to scramble as well or better than Fitz? You don’t have to answer because it was a rhetorical question. My feelings are you don’t draft a QB at #5 who before his injury was considered the best QB in CFB and then wait for everything to be perfect and pristine for him to enter a game. That may never happen. Think about that!

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I think you can look at the defenses we were slated to play the first 5 weeks of the season, look at the injury Tua is coming off, consider an oline that was rebuilt and didn’t get a preseason, and consider what are prospects for reaching the playoffs going into 2020 were, and make a calculated decision to start him mid-season instead of early on.

Then as a coach, you can stick to that decision and not give a sh&t that some fans are throwing a hissy fit because Tua may start game 7 instead of game 5, lol.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I felt watching the game and some others did as well, maybe even you in particular that Fitz gave up too quick a lot of times, went into run and get some yards rather than trying to extend the play. I’m sure Fitz can see the field better and recognize and process what he’s seeing better after 16 years in the league he should be able to. Gotta start somewhere

  21. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Kong – I haven’t been saying Tua should have started game 1. I think he should be ready to play in any of the next couple of games. We’re also 1-3 and if we lose again that drumbeat is going to get louder and steadier, as it should.

  22. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,
Some folks just want Tua to play. It really doesn’t matter if he or the team is ready….they just want him to play. So, nobody really gives a crap whether it’s best for the team or not. Fans just want to see him play, everything else be damned. Lol
    ***
I get it and I don’t really care. He’ll play sooner or later. I don’t think it matters one whit whether that’s in game 6 or game 12.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t think it matters in the big picture either. I just don’t get why QB’s like Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert can be ready so much faster than Tua. You have to admit finding the perfect situation to put him in can change at any time. You can plan but the football gods rarely cooperate.

  23. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Wait, so no one got the miner’s pick? I don’t know shit about tools and equipment but I thought that was the closest thing I had in my emoji arsenal to portray the 49ers. lol

  24. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Mike,

All I’m saying is I think the coaches have a plan for when to start him, they are sticking to it, and they could care less about the beating of the drum.

I’m not sure about anyone else, but when I looked at our schedule this year, I had us starting 1-4 or 2-3 at best. I think probably most of us here did. We’re right about where I expected us to be. I thought the defense would be better than it has been. On offense I knew we’d miss a shifty Wilson, didn’t expect Howard would be a non-factor, and expected more from Williams and Breida.

The oline is looking pretty good in pass pro, but I agree with Randy that Fitz is covering up for them some. We still can’t run the ball. So at this point I’m ok with letting Tua sit a bit longer. IMO starting him won’t yield different results in the W/L column right now, so let the oline get a few more games under their belt and maybe we can get a little better at run and pass pro before handing it over to him.

The last thing I want to see is what happened with Rosen last year happen to Tua. Start him, then switch back to Fitz. When Tua starts I’d like to see him keep the job moving forward.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I hear ya Kong, I’m just really sensitive to the “Not ready” quote. I don’t want to hear that our superstar QB isn’t ready. That’s probably on me, but it still bugs me.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Coach speak really grates on my nerves too. It’s the reason rants like “playoffs?! I just hope we win a game!” are so great. To see a coach say f^ck it and say what he actually thinks is refreshing, lol.

  25. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  26. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,
I think our team situation lended itself to letting Tua sit awhile. Then, add in his injury situation, and I don’t think it was crazy to let him sit. This team wasn’t going to do anything with or without Tua playing. This team will be lucky to finish at .500. I wasn’t suggesting you need the perfect situation before you put him in. I think having a veteran QB who knows how to play helps other guys develop faster and better. I don’t think you get the same thing from a rookie QB. I don’t care how good he is.
    ***
And now I think I’m tired of talking about Tua already. Lol

  27. D's avatar D says:

SF has a scary DL, SD has scary edge rushers, the Rams have a sick DL too. Thats another reason i thought the Jets game was the safest bet to bring him in. I dont think there is a perfect time, but those teams would be straight into the fire vs the Jets who are pretty much a dumpster fire at this point.

    • D's avatar D says:

Like Randy and Kong were saying. Fitz knows better how to navigate that pressure in the pocket, i see both sides of this argument and if i went with my own personal preference id throw him in now, but i can see the other side of that argument and im sure thats the side that Flo is on.

    Thanks, Mike E. Nice write.

I think some of the rhetoric of not being ready is more of shade that the OL and offense, in general, is a work-in-progress. Fitz’s experience puts that learning process in overdrive.

I don’t think Tua can accelerate that process like Fitz can, presently. Soon perhaps, maybe. Why rush?

In Burrows case, calling the bengals depth chart a “depth chart” is a misnomer. burrows backup is Ryan Finley, who is basically a rookie with 3 games in his career under his belt

Neither team has a Ryan Fitzpatrick available
        We really have a luxury

I’m in no hurry to start Tua

I think we can play him

Coming into the season getting the OL up to shape was a priority

      I think that’s coming along

But maybe a week or 2 might be a better way to put him in a better situation

We are on the cusp of seeing him imo

  36. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I went back and watched some video’s on Tua. I was one of the skeptical ones during the draft. Don’t know why some knock his arm though. That was not a ? for me really. Tua has a stronger arm or just as strong an arm as many starters in the NFL. After going back and watching Tua, he really reminds me of a left handed Russel Wilson.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

  41. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

From the last blog article on Grier and that we lack playmakers is somewhat true but when you tear the team down like we did last year, how do you expect us to loaded? Can’t address everything in one offseason. But we do have some good young players who we hope will ascend to another level in time. It doesn’t really make much sense to keep going to the past before 2019. Not sure why that keeps coming up. That no longer has anything to do with what we’re doing now. The roster is being totally revamped.

  42. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Piggy, I did draft RB Kylan Hill. Last year he had 242 carries for 1,350 yards with 5.6 average and 10 TD’s. This year he only has 8 carries for 41 yards (5.1 average) because he is in MSU’s air raid offense this year where they pass almost every down. He does have 8 rec for 158 yards with 19.8 yard average and 1 TD in one game vs LSU.

  43. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Piggy, I chose Surtain over Waddle so I drafted a real speedster later in WR Anthony Schwartz. He is faster than Tyreek Hill.

ORob … were you serious with J Howard’s 9.75 Mil ?? How many years is it for. I spose I could google it..
yes I’m disappointed with the run game , especially Brieda and Howard so far .. hoping that the original OL focus was on pass pro, and now that that is improved they concentrate more on run blocking and we see results soon.

Watched the first 1/4 of Seattle game last night and most of passes Fitz was tossing were 15 yds downfield.. that is an improvement over the behind LOS screen passes with no blocking that we had with Gase. I want to see Tua as well but we have time. Next 4 games we will either improve enough to win more than lose or he will be in

  47. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’d like to see us take some more deep shots but I wonder if there is reason why we’re mostly working the middle of the field in medium range, and throwing to the backs a lot on screens in the flat – which I like? Could be they’re looking for the OL to gel more and get better at deeper pass pro. Like everything else it’s a work in progress because there is a lot of new.

  48. TOP SECRET's avatar TOP SECRET says:

i don’t know who said this prior, but i would agree that the most ideal time to start TUA would be AFTER game 10 (at the jets). that would give him the extra bye week to prepare for the home game against those same jet scumbags.

What do you think so far about Austin Jackson? I think he’s been pretty good for a very young rookie (21) LT – even though he’s a little banged up right now with a foot injury.

  50. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Piggy,
I think he has everything you need to be the best LT in the league. He’s making Mack look like JAG.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think he’s going to have a good career
I thought we might consider trading up when he fell a little
But I am happy with Jackson so far

  51. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I think Jackson looks okay for a rookie. I have seen a few too many wrong steps, but he’s done okay. I’d also like to see a little more push in the running game from him, but he’ll get stronger. He doesn’t really get on guys and dominate them. He’s got some filling out to do. He seems to play with an attitude, which I like to see. I don’t think he’s close to Wirfs’ class, but so far so good, overall.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s a solid analysis. The way I look at OL is… if you hear their name too much, it better because they’re dominating. The other one isn’t good. I’m not hearing Jackson’s name too often. LOL

  53. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Who knows Deiter might become the center next year with Karras being a potential placeholder this year, or maybe we look elsewhere. I think Hunt is our future RT. Davis might hang around as the game day depth guy. At least they totally revamped the OL because what we were were rolling with wasn’t working. I see progress already.

I really hope Deiter can be a part of this OL

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Even if Deiter is a solid backup C/OL and Davis becomes the same as a G/T we have nice depth because they’ve been around, know what’s going on and have proven to be versatile if not starters. A 3rd and a UDFA journeyman for quality depth. That’s how it works sometimes.

We might want to draft a top center prospect if there is one. I don’t know.

  54. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mack looked like LT there. Take the QB down and also make the tackle look like a rag doll.

  55. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Lmao Brady lost track of what down it was with 32 secs left. No Tom that WAS 4th Down. You done son

Left Foles hanging looking for him at games end … too funny

Wow, Jackson out a few weeks, that sucks. This is exactly why I say you can’t plan for a certain game because shit like this happens. Now we have to hope he recovers well in a few weeks before we put Tua in there, and yes, I know Tua’s a lefty.

  64. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I like the idea of putting Hunt at RT and seeing how it goes. Put him in there and see if you can make some hay in the running game behind he and Kindley.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’ll agree with that if they think Davis is the best available LT. But seems what you are thinking is how they see the future for sure. Believe Hunt has some growing to do though. Davis was named a team captain early on.

      • D's avatar D says:

Its was. BBM and I got the last one, Wyoming got one before us and now is gonna get clipped by this one it seems. Wont be as direct a hit as last time but still….

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Glad to hear this one isn’t right side of the impact swirl, as of now at least. Leaves me thinking that Krishna has been real lucky though….. me too.

  67. D's avatar D says:

Stanger, Team Captain and good at LT or any position gfor that matter doesnt really have anything to do with one another, just said he is brining leadership and the other players look to him as a mentor, but agian, i dont think that makes him the best LT choice. Davenport had a good game last week, and even though i dont trust him having a bunch of those, if let him prove to me he wont before i move Davis to LT. Maybe they can bring in Hunt at LT as well.

  76. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The NFL allows murderers and rapists to play in their league but won’t let a guy talk about grooming products and the good results he got from them. Hypocritical as all fucking hell

  77. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

They should have Adam Schefter tweeting Rapaport is day to day with a manscaping post suspension. lol

  78. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

  80. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’d been thinking it was either gonna be Davis or more likely Davenport at LT on Sunday. But there is another option — “Ereck Flowers was drafted in the top-10 overall to play left tackle.” Hunt or Deiter could then pop in at LG.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

All I can say is Flowers was dreadful at LT. The only reason he’s still in the NFL was Bill Callahan saved his career moving him to G and getting him to learn the position. I mean anything can happen but I think it’s best if he stays inside. I’d probably let Davenport play LT, keep Davis at RT

      • D's avatar D says:

That’s where I am. Though I’d consider Hunt at LT if I wanted to see if he has potential there.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

D — — why Hunt at LT rather than Hunt at RT? Guess it all hinges on how good Davenport is…. but have absolutely no clue on that one.

I know this is just Wisconsin, but starting to think the 2020 election will have the highest turnout in our lifetimes. And the early voting sites there aren’t even open yet.
    ——————————–
“In the 2016 general election, 146,294 Wisconsinites voted by mail, and 666,035 others voted at in-person early-voting sites. In the current general election, 646,987 people have already voted absentee as of Friday.”

Lots of lawyers trying to make it harder to vote for a reason, but it is so much easier now. Used to be first Tuesday in Nov and that was it. Now you can mail in or vote early a week or two before the election.

    • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

Not sure if this is fair. If one team is following protocols and no positive results and others aren’t and have positives, is it fair to reschedule games of the team that’s following the rules?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It couldn’t be more unfair, but I think the NFL has no choice. They don’t want to extend the season so they have to do things like this.

  91. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

I guess this changes things when you’re thinking Tua might be starting after the Bye week. Surprise!!! It’s next week.

In further consideration I’m ok with it. I’m OOT next weekend and would have missed the game. Now I won’t! 😂

  92. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The new BYE could definitely change the schedule for Tua. If Fitz doesn’t play well enough to help us win I could see using the new BYE week to get Tua ready to play against the Chargers. Tough matchup though with their defense, but it would be at home.
