Week 8 – Rams @ Dolphins

The halfway point of the season, the Miami Dolphins 3-3 host the 5-2 LA Rams. It’s going to be very different for the 3-3 Dolphins because their veteran fun loving QB is no longer at the helm as he is replaced by rookie Tua Tagovailoa. There aren’t many parallels to find in the history of the NFL but I do recall Eli Manning replacing Kurt Warner in NY for the Giants in 2004. The NY Giants were 5-4 and after replacing Kurt Warner who had thrown for 2054 yards with 6 TD’s and 4 INT’s ended up finishing the season 1-6 with Eli Manning at QB. Ryan Fitzpatrick after 6 games has 1535 yards with 10 TD’s and 7 INT’s. There are similarities, but to me the biggest disparity is that the Dolphins at 3-3 are only a game and half behind the Bills (5-2) while in 2004, the Giants at 5-4 were pretty far behind the division leading Philadelphia Eagles who were 8-1 and comfortably in first place as they cruised to a 13-3 record. After watching the play of the Bills against the NY Jets last week, those Bills are fortunate to have won that game.

So even though it’s technically game #8 for us and not the start of the second half of the season, this season will be forever divided from this point on. Did the Dolphins make the right move inserting their rookie QB with a chance to win the division? We’ll find out, and this Sunday’s matchup against the LA Rams will give us an idea. The Rams boast a +52 point differential after 7 games, the Dolphins +47. The Dolphins are 12th in the league in scoring (26.7PPG) while the Rams are 18th (25.1PPG). Defensively, the Rams are 2rd in the NFL allowing 17.7PPG and the Dolphins are right behind them at 3rd allowing 18.8PPG. The teams are pretty even but definitely take a different approach getting there. On offense the Rams truly have had a RB by committee approach with Darrell Henderson leading the team with 87 carries for 411 yards followed closely by Malcolm Brown with 65 carries for 274 yards. Cam Akers was drafted early (RD 2 pick #52) by the Rams but minor injuries have stifled his season. In contrast, the Dolphins have relied almost singularly on RB Myles Gaskin with 82 carries and 340 yards and then Matt Brieda has had a few carries sprinkled in some games for 33 carries and 115 yards. The disparity is even wider in the passing game where Gaskin has 27 receptions to Breida’s 7. For the Rams, they seldom throw to the backs, Goff loves the WR combo of Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp who have 30 and 37 receptions respectively. The Rams offense relies much more heavily on its run game than do the Dolphins, the Dolphins have about half the rushing yards.

On defense I think we match up well against the Rams passing game. The pass rush which has come alive can make things difficult for Goff. The Dolphins secondary, now at full strength with Byron Jones healthy opposite Xavien Howard. Nik Needham has been handling the slot and safeties Bobby McCain and Eric Rowe, along with Brandon Jones, Kavon Frazier and Noah Igbinoghene will probably once again leave the Rams to focus on the run game. At the time of this writing, I don’t believe the Dolphins have made a roster move to replace Davon Godchaux at DT. Raekwon Davis will start there but until they bring someone for the PS or acquire a DT DE’s Zach Sieler and Jason Strowbridge will likely fill in. This is important, because I think the Rams are going to try and control the game with their run game so our depth and strength on the front 7 will be imperative to success at stopping the run. The Dolphins are midpack allowing 745 yards rushing (124 YPG)) while the Rams are #12 with 702 yards allowed (100 YPG).

On offense, all I can do is guess as to how we attack the Rams. LOgic would dictate that we’re not going to be doing a lot of prototypical NFL dropbacks with Tua, that we will have him moving around to keep him away from Aaron Donald who as 8 sacks in 7 games, along with 15 QB hits. The good news is that no one else on this Rams defense is close to that, so the task will be neutralize Donald and take your chances with everyone else. My hope is that we get TE Mike Gesicki more involved in the offense. Only twice has Gesicki been targeted more than 5 times and in 2 games he’s had only 1 reception. I want that to change. He’s a big time weapon and should be better utilized. The Rams won’t be easy to run against but they have very little to go on with Tua except 3 plays in the Jets and his college film, so Tua is the “X” factor. In some ways I’d be surprised if they lean heavily on Tua in this game but sometimes great players make it so, and if that happens, I’m willing to let Tua be Tua.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

      He looked comfortable

Don’t forget this guy came into the NC game, engineered a comeback and won a national championship as a true freshmen….

      He was like 18 then

We’ll learn a lot more about Tua in this game against the Cards. Last game was a throw it out the window game in regards to eval.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The game wasn’t too big for him. He knows the important thing was the W, but he also knows he needs to get better.

Is Creed Humphrey still the top center in the draft

If we are picking at 32, where I expect to be picking 😛, we might take a look at center

Piggy – I thought Tua rushed some throws, which would indicate he wasn’t totally comfortable. On the other hand, I don’t think he was nervous or scared of getting hurt in the least. He looked very confident and always looked composed, which I was very happy to see.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Game 1 was getting feet wet while playing game manager.

Game 2 will be getting more acclimated, and still playing game manager, but if we get down double digits the training wheels will be off.

This team is too good in other areas to let him wing it and have Goff like results.

I don’t care what Burrow and Herbert are doing for losing teams. At some point they’ll have to learn how to win.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t think they’re going to just say take it and win. It’s going to be progressive, although if we play a team that’s weak on defense we may open it up a bit more. I think this weekend against ARZ we may throw a little more than last week,

    with election day upon us ;

to the folks who actually think i love football MORE than MY country. you seem to have greatly underestimated me, NOT sorry to disappoint you 🙂

but with the potential of America (as we know it) ending with a biden victory, it’s just too hard to focus on “football only” as a topic. especially with the powerful forces out there that are so disparately trying to destroy this country. and you don’t have to look hard to find that there’s plenty of people still alive that “USE TO HAVE” freedom and rights in other parts of the world, but no longer do, that’s why i still believe in the greatest country on the planet, and have sworn to protect it and the constitution against ALL enemies foreign and domestic.

i’ve lived my entire adult Marine Corps life by this code (and in this order) :

    1.) god
    2.) country
    3.) corps
4.) all the perks that come with America’s freedom.

so, football falls into the # 4 category. i sincerely hope you ALL understand. but if you don’t, well ….. that’s on you, “too bad – so sad” 🙁

    TRUMP 2020

  8. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’ll be interesting to see how our D does against the Cards and their running game. They are 2nd in the league with 160.7 yds/game.

  9. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

That is assuming our game with the Cards happens. Two Cards did test positive, but no new positive tests so far.

  10. TOP SECRET's avatar TOP SECRET says:

    and…. i’m back…….lol.
that surely didn’t take long at all……. feels good being part of that RED WAVE 🙂

  11. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I thought his two worst throws were the the WR screen and then the HB shovel

    Those looked rushed to me

He liked pretty good when it was just a drop back scan the field sort of pass
And he was spot on on the little quick slants (no surprise)

  12. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

One of the states that is going to be interesting to watch tonight is Texas. They had one million more votes cast than in all of 2016 before election day. And some suspect that 3-4 million more may vote today. So a good chunk of the state ballots will be by new or infrequent voters.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The Texas GOP was trying to get 100k votes invalidated out in Harris Co bx they used drove through voting. But that application was denied by the federal court judge (J. Hansen who is a Bush appointee)

That speak volumes to house close they think Texas is

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

My guess is that all the guys from both sides who say they know Texas voting like the back of their hand have no clue what will happen. How can you when 4+ million more votes than last time roll in? It’s a 40-something percent increase.

  13. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I took the wife and father-in-law to vote. Whole trip including driving there getting the old vet/walker in and out and back home in 26 minutes. Was nice to not see any idiots outside with signs and shit for either party.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Was pretty mellow where I went as well. A Biden tent, a Trump tent, and a tent with some food bank offering free pulled pork sandwiches (even if t real price was hitting you up for a donation). So just like any other year.

  15. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Piggy, Creed Humphries is supposed to be the top center but not sure IMO. He is projected, right now, to be taken 1st round btwn picks 15-20. I think Myers is the possibly the best all round OC due to his athleticism but he does have 2 stand out guards playing next to him. He is projected to go bottom of first to top of 2nd. The two guys D mentioned are really good as well, Hill and Dickerson. This is the draft for a OC, IMO. We should nab one of these 4 by the second round.

    • D's avatar D says:

He isnt, or at least in my opinion. He is in the top 5 for sure, but i think both Hill and Dickerson are better.

      • D's avatar D says:

Way i look at position heavy drafts is im not forced to reach so ill have 4-5 guys that are relatively close in productivity and ill just let fate take care of the rest and ill select the guy who is about the same as the rest at the position i want.

  16. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Dolphins waived former 3rd-round cornerback Cordrea Tankersley from the PS. Have to think that is close to end of game for him. But he’ll probably get some more look ats this season or next.

    • D's avatar D says:

Given his draft pedigree and his age, he will have plenty of chances to catch on with someone. Question to me is, who are they bringing in to his spot.

      • D's avatar D says:

most likely that move is predicated by another one that still unannounced.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We waived him, whatever team took him waived him, we took him back, and now we waived him again from the PS. He was already stashed. Wondering if his health is an issue. He did have an injury…. think was ACL.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And his spot was taken by WR Antonio Callaway.

      • D's avatar D says:

Calloway was already on the PS i thought, am i wrong on that? Im sure his opportunities are dying out but guys in his position bounce around for a good long while before they peter out.

      • D's avatar D says:

Yeah it could be health and if so maybe this is basically his last go. Thats one thing that will stop people from taking chances on ya.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Callaway was put back after he came off suspension…… not sure what it was for.

      • D's avatar D says:

        Substance abuse i think.

  17. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

D, I really like Waddle and mocked him to us many times in the 1st. I have changed that tune after watching our defense. I want to continue to build on what we have now. I will probably stick with Parsons and Ossai in the 1st round. Then would prefer OC and DT/NT in second round. I think we miss on Barmore. He may go before we pick in second round. I am all for DT/NT Slaton in second even if some say it might be a reach. I don’t think so. Pick #77 would be a great spot to take a RB.
Najee Harris may still be there or Journey Brown, Kylin Hill, Kenneth Gainwell, and Zamir White.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

There’s going to be good WRs in the 2nd round

Curious to see if the waddle injury drops him there

    • D's avatar D says:

On of those RB will be and i think there isn’t a ton of gap between all of them but i prefer Harris because he is a solid all around back. You wont have to flex him out of the position if its certain down and distance formations.

I think Barmore would have to be our first pick if we are going to get him but yeah i think Slaton would be fine for me as well if we wanted to go for a different position player with the first pick.

Im not big on Parsons and him not playing this year puts him down on my list because i just cant see if he grew in areas i think he needed to from last year. I also dont think we have a huge need there. Our guys are starting to gel and i think Parsons might be a luxury pick there. Dylan Moses might slip to the second and all around he isn’t far off what Parsons can do.

Ossai, i havent looked at too much yet, but what i have seen i think id be just as happy with Cox out of UF in maybe round 3 or 4. I think we have a few guys that right now are pretty solid for us there and i dont really think we need to bust off that high to get Ossai who, again, i havent seen much of his tape yet.

Waddle is my favorite WR for us, but im also not hung up on it.

  18. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

For those looking for early indications tonight, there are certain states that are:
    1) swing states
    2) early voting was 90% or higher of all 2016 votes
    3) state law allows processing and tabulating before in person voting on election day.

That means these states should give a strong hint of what may unfold.

North Carolina at 7:30 ET (Georgia allowed to tabulate starting at 7 am today so maybe them about the same time as NC)
    Florida at 8:00 ET …
Ohio should be helpful at same time as NC, but might take longer as the early voting was only 53.% of 2016 total, relatively low considering nationwide numbers.

North Carolina, then, should be the first state that will determine the “Pathway” calculations for both candidates. So, whoever you are ‘cheering’ for, hope this helps. 🙂

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think in most states they were allowed to start counting until Election Day

I really hope they started at 12:01am

      • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Here’s a link for state by state date/time when they can ‘process’ and when they can ‘count’:
        https://ballotpedia.org/When_states_can_begin_processing_and_counting_absentee/mail-in_ballots,_2020

Here’s a great link for state by state early voting numbers and %of2016:
        https://electproject.github.io/Early-Vote-2020G/index.html

Here in Texas, after 2018 midterms this was the first time Democrats did not dismantle their infrastructure. They kept it in full operation over the last 2 years. It may not matter but a little after 8 pm ET, those 9.7 million early votes could be included in the “first numbers” released.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Rhino — saw my county’s election director asked about when the votes will be reported. Said “polls close at 7, we’ll be sending everything in at 7;:15 or 7:20.” But then FL is a state where you can count the mail-ins as the they come in.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

That’s great to hear for Broward Co which his historically slow

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Pig — could have been wrong on that one thinking about it. Those words were said but could have been the head of counting center saying it about sending to the county rather than the county to the state (saw on Chan 10 news). Either way…. the mail-ins should be in quick.

  19. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

D, I agree on Humphries. He was a 2-3 round projection last year and don’t see it as any different this year. I think I would take whoever is the best one left on the board in the 2nd round.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m not going to pretend I know the first thing about evaluating college centers

But I did read last year that if he came out he would be the top center selected

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think he will be caught up in a group of possibly 6 good centers this draft. Teams may snub thinking they can wait until later to get one.

  20. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Not sure why I have not brought up RB Journey Brown, 5’11 216, PSU. He is the best RB in the Big-10 and will probably be the fastest RB at the combine/draft. He is a homerun threat. Very fast for his size, I believe he had run a 4.29 40 at one point.

  21. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

From Dolphins Wire: “Needham has forced just 3 incompletions on 17 targets thus far this season and has been called for several penalties in coverage as well. Opposing quarterbacks? Their passer rating when targeting him is 118.7 thus far this season.”

Isn’t it time to make Iggy the Nickel?

  22. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

    StangerX,
Florida CAN tabulate before today, and can report, but those reports cannot be released until after the Panhandle polling sites close (an hour after the rest of the state)…. that would put the first results released for the entire state as 8:00 ET. Or does Florida release before panhandle sites close (?) lol. That would be weird. In Texas there are 252 eastern counties that close an hour earlier than the rest of the state, but all counties need to be closed before the first numbers are released.

    • D's avatar D says:

I can tell you from my experience in Florida, if the Dems aren’t almost 20 point favorites going into the eastern part of the state closing, the republicans will take Florida. North west Florida is heavy Rep.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Rhino — was just commenting on how fast a county can total and report. Even though been here a decade …. not sure if they start publicly reporting EST country results after they report or wait will the Panhandle is closed. But either way FL results should come quick cause they are counting the mail-ins all along. Least by 9PM EST Florida should be done unless really close…. as if that has ever happened before. 🙂

    ————————————————————
no he was a 2nd-3rd rounder i think, as BBM stated. I never saw him in any mocks as a 1st round project. I think Ruiz and Cushenberry were both rated higher than him last year.

  24. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Calloway is coming off suspension. I had completely forgotten about him. This is one of those under the radar moves that has the potential to pay big dividends for us. If he can stay out of trouble, he’s got talent.

  25. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

North Carolina announced they will delay first numbers release by 45 minutes due to a printer issue in one precinct. So it looks like a ‘southeast’ avalanche of numbers shortly after 8 ET. Plenty of time after work to walk the dog, workout, etc. 🙂

  26. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I honestly would love it if we wait until late day 2 to even look at center

I think this is the draft to be focusing on skill players and front 7 defensive payers

We are going to have an early 2nd via houston to work with too
That pick has wr/rb written all over it if you ask me

  31. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Losing Ford isn’t in itself a big deal, but I hate trading with the Pets, and he will immediately improve their WR corps, although with Cam ‘throwing’ the ball…lol

  33. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

So this is my feeling playing out in real time. If we got a 4th or a 5th for Ford, I think that is a win for us. We get Wilson and Hurns back next year, we have Callaway coming off suspension (although he has to show he can stop being a moron), and we may use a a day 1 or 2 draft pick on a WR in the draft, so getting a 4th or 5th for a #3 receiver wouldn’t be too shabby. I just wish it wasn’t the Pets.

I’ve got it! We need the Pets to beat Buffalo in their second game or we lose the tiebreaker to Buffalo as they would have only one loss in the division. If we sweep the rest of our divisional games, we may be able to win a tiebreaker if the Pets can give Buff that 2nd divisional loss. Aha!

Gaskin gets hurt and they felt like they needed to trade rather than turning to Jordan Howard

    Bad signings happen

  62. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Sorry about Gaskin guys. It’s my fault, anyone on my FF roster is fucking doomed! I don’t want to tell you who else is on my roster. lol

  63. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, did you mention that Benito Jones played some snaps? I have to say I didn’t realize. I was watching the LBs and DBs more.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yes, I saw one particular play where he was playing NT, it was probably the aerial cam that was focused on our defense and they had a closeup of him getting set right in the middle. He has Bowens #95

  64. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I was just admiring how good Gaskin jerseys look

  65. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

    You are all eerily quiet….

I think it could be over tonight.

  68. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Piggy I’m on my 3rd bourbon

  69. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

If it makes anyone feel better, the Daily Caller thinks California is in play.

  70. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

CNN is killing me. Their coverage is good but their analysis is revolving around what Biden has to do to win. They keep ignoring the fact that Virginia is leaning red.

  71. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

So I assume it is going to be close ? Or just unpredictable?

  72. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Well good luck and hope for the best whatever that is

  73. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I like John King on CNN. I find him fair and very good at this. Been watching him for years.

  74. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Well My job is complete!
    Senate = Red
    House = Red
    President = Red

  75. D's avatar D says:

Looks like its going to come down to PA again this year, they are 57/41 with only 60% reporting. Most the other states, Trump has somewhat significant leads in and 90+% reporting.

    • D's avatar D says:

This looks almost 100% like last one and this was the point at which i pretty much passed out and woke up later to what was a shock. It came down to PA then too.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      There’s a scenario where PA isn’t determinative.

It’s bc of Nebraska’s weird system of district rather than a winner takes the whole state
If Biden wins district 2 in NE and wins Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona, Minnesota and Nevada (hes expected to win Nevada and Minnesota) he will finish at exactly 270 in the closest election ever, even if trump wins PA

They havent called NC, GA or Iowa yet but I’m pretty sure Trump wins all those states

I’m pretty sure it’s going to be super close one way or another

  76. D's avatar D says:

Montana has to be pissed, huge ass state, 3 electoral votes lol.

  77. D's avatar D says:

Just called Ohio and Montana right as i was talking about it, both went Rep

  78. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Montana is big but only 3 people live there.

  79. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

My prediction is Trump with 296 electoral votes.

  80. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

CNN refuses to report that Trump has won FL and TX

  81. D's avatar D says:

    CNN just put up FL

  82. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Why is Biden speaking now? This is different.

  83. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Is Bidden on speed?

I’ve never seen him smile like that!

  84. D's avatar D says:

Said the TV’s are off at Bidens campaign HQ, they said its a sign they may be hearing from him soon.

  85. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

SBJ Acosta is all that is wrong with journalism.

  86. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Oi! CNN is now gone full on partisan.

  87. D's avatar D says:

If you add in TX and GA as pretty much guarantees, its pretty much a dead heat right now

  88. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Trump is currently up 12K votes in Virginia. CNN is ignoring.

  89. D's avatar D says:

So they believe the results are going to drag out until the end of the week…..thats going to be worse lol. Its better to just rip that bandaid off. I cant imagine they should be able to call any state if they cant call all of them. So why are there any results. That would have been better just held off reporting results until the end of the week.

  90. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I bounce between CNN and Fox. I like John King of CNN covering election voting districts, not the commentators.

  91. D's avatar D says:

Hell i might just go back to sleep then. I woke up and thought i might watch until the results were in this year but if PA wont be done counting all the mail in’s, this thing wont be decided tonight.

  92. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I don’t think he gets to 296 Phish

  93. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

    Bet

  94. D's avatar D says:

    AP declared TX now.

  95. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Don’t get me wrong, I would like it!

    I think I’ll go more with 282!

And I’ll do it for a beer in the first week in June!
    In Key west.

  96. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It really takes Michigan, Wisconsin and PA to get over 290 for either candidate based on what I’m reading now

That might happen but each of those states will be counting votes tomorrow from what I hear and the margin for either is slim

Believe it or not it might finish right around 270 for some one

  97. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Well Georgia sit the bed!
