Week 13 – Bengals @ Dolphins

With all the flux in the lineup on the offensive side of the ball necessitated by injuries, COVID-19 etc, the one stalwart, reliable guy all season long has been #11, DeVante Parker. A look at Parker’s catch percentage of 65.8% might not be that impressive unless you watch the games. If you’ve been watching, Parker isn’t getting those easy throws, in fact it seems as if nearly every throw his way is a contested catch. I listen to WQAM as much as I can and NFL radio as well, and of course try to read everything Dolphins that I can. There’s a lot of talk about Tua Tagovailoa needing to learn how to throw to targets that aren’t wide open, as they usually were at Alabama. I believe it, because in some ways it’s counterintuitive. I think there’s a level of trust that a QB has to have in order to make those kind of throws and I believe that’s something that Tua will learn, and one that I also believe may take some time to develop. It’s a skill he hasn’t honed yet, so be patient, but it sure is nice to have to DeVante Parker here as a Miami Dolphin, because he makes those plays seem routine.

This week, the Joe Burrow-less Cincinnati Bengals come to town, in tow with a couple of former Miami Dolphins assistant coaches. Zac Taylor is the Head Coach, along with DC Lou Anarumo. As you know, the Bengals lost their promising rookie starting QB Joe Burrow to a knee injury and now have either last week’s starter Brandon Allen or Ryan Finley to choose from. Allen had an uneven start and apparently was lucky to escape with only one INT as he was consistently throwing into crowds. Either way, whomever starts at QB for Cincy has a tough task against our Miami Dolphins defense. Man, it just feels great to be able to say that and mean it!

As far as our Miami Dolphins offense, it’s still unclear as to who will be in the backfield. Myles Gaskin is designated to return from IR but it’s not a guarantee that he’s able to go Sunday. His former Huskie teammate Salvon Ahmed is also not a lock to play with a sore shoulder and last week’s primary ballcarrier DeAndre Washington has a sore hamstring. This could potentially lead to a Matt Breida and Patrick Laird backfield, but I have a feeling Gaskin or Ahmed will be playing and likely getting most of the action, it depends on how each one of them responds during practice, and maybe we even see both. The other big question looming is whether Tua Tagovailoa’s thumb injury is significant enough to keep him out another game which would have our wily veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick getting another cherished start. Fitz may really like Tua but don’t think for a second that he’s not relishing every opportunity he gets to start.

Depending on who starts for the Bengals, either Allen or Finley, they will likely have Giovanni Bernard as their starting RB along with a nice trio of WR’s including former pro bowler A.J. Green, very impressive rookie Tee Higgins and team leading WR Tyler Boyd, with 72 receptions and 723 yards. Higgins is the TD leader with 5 TD receptions. This is a different offense without QB Joe Burrows and RB Joe Mixon. Bernard will share carries with former Dolphins RB Samaje Perine. On defense, Jesse Bates III is having a nice season at safety with 3 INT’s and 13 passes defensed. Pretty impressive, as he also is 2nd on the team in tackles with 75. SS Vonn Bell leads the team with 85 tackles and if we know one thing, it’s never a good sign when your safeties lead the team in tackles. DE Carlos Dunlap was traded to the Seahawks at the trade deadline and basically leaves a toothless defense behind in Cincy. DE Carl Lawson (not to be confused with M’s fave Manny Lawson) leads the Bengals with 4.5 sacks.

Well, this is the easiest game on our schedule for the rest of the season with the Chiefs, Patriots, Raiders and Bills remaining after this week. That doesn’t mean we look past our opponent this week, I know Brian Flores won’t be doing that. This is a must win for us to stay competitive for both the division crown and/or the Wild Card. Neither avenue will be easy but wins mean everything and we better get one this week. At the moment, Cleveland is the top WC team at 8-3, followed by us and Indy but the Ravens lurk just one game behind us at 6-5 along with the LV Raiders and the South division may change hands so both Indy and Tennessee are in competition for a WC spot. Right now we stand as the 6 seed above Indy but this is very fluid and can change weekly. I say we take care of our own business and win at least 10 games and we should be in the playoffs.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

I DO get the sense that some here think I’m belittling Tua, based on comments above. I assure you, that’s NOT the case.

DUDES… Tua just came off a REHAB assignment, just over a year ago. Give him another year to increase his core strength AND his arm strength… he’s going to be just fine.

DUDES… NOBODY had the “release time” of Dan Marino, and it’s not even close. IMO, Philip Rivers is a distant second place, and some might even say Elway or Favre should be in that conversation. I’m sorry, but Tua isn’t in that same league.

That’s NOT to say that Tua doesn’t have a fairly GOOD “release time”… just PLEASE don’t over-exaggerate Tua in this manner.

Some of you may (or may not) remember Parcells what with his “buzzer/horn”, in order to get the ball out before the Defense can ever get to the QB. Well… Chad Henne and Pat White adjusted to it… and it didn’t fare too well, for either.

I’m trying to tell Stanger that this 2.38 stat he cites isn’t about how fast the ball comes out of a QB’s hand. And for the love of FOOTBALL, NOBODY could correct Kaep’s throwing (wind-up) motion.

O-Rob knows what I’m talking about when it comes to feet, planting, and how quickly the QB needs to get it out of his hands (from start to finish) in an instant.

Tua’s not yet there… but I DO believe he’ll get there.

      ————

Did you read the article and check out the film breakdown and statistical analysis, including the film of Marino and Tua side by side slowed down? I mean, if you can dispute that with something credible that’s awesome, let’s debate, but just saying it doesn’t make it true, lol.

Exaggerating usually comes when someone make statements based on beliefs rather than evidence. I put an article up that has standards and a breakdown of the metrics used along with film and comparative statistics. You responded with “…it’s not even close”.

      LOL, so who’s exaggerating?

I also put it pretty clearly that I agreed the difference between QB release time and the 2.38 release time being discussed are two different things, that is fairly obvious once pointed out, so not sure why you feel the need to restate that.

      • mf13ss says:

I’ll need to check the article you posted. And as such, I apologize for not having read it.

        RESPECT to you, CavKong!

      • CavalierKong says:

No worries, M13. I’m really just arguing for fun right now anyway, lol. That doesn’t mean I don’t believe what I wrote though. 🙂

    • CavalierKong says:

And I don’t think anyone reads your comments as belittling Tua. there is nothing wrong with thinking Tua isn’t a perfect athletic specimen or doesn’t have a perfect game, lol. That isn’t belittling him.

  2. Krishna says:

I love the way the defense is being built and what we’ve shown, so far. Let’s see it at an elite level by being tested this week. I love it.

We are in a good place right now and need to get better. It’s been a team effort.

IMO, that’s the only way it works.

Again, IMO, Tua has skills. Do they translate to the next level? I think so. You don’t need a rocket arm to win SBs.

He has a lot to learn and needs to start playing chess v checkers. He should be fine, if he isn’t broken.

He has weapons now, started using his TE. I love Gesicki. I like Kyle Pitts out of UF, too, for the draft crazies. How do you “hide” a “weak” arm? Throw to your TEs and RBs. Just need them to be able to block. Pitts is huge, but maybe much like Gesicki.

Maybe, I’m crazy, lol, but that 1st drive after halftime was awesome! Am I hallucinating? The only TD.

Stream of consciousness, HH induced. Lol….sorry.

    • CavalierKong says:

“You don’t need a rocket arm to win SBs.”
      ———

Agreed, I’ve been saying that for awhile that even though he doesn’t have a cannon arm, it’s also not Chad Pennington, and it’s plenty good enough to get the job done. I also agree with the comment “…if he isn’t broken”. My biggest concern with Tua is his ability to stay healthy. If he can stay healthy, I have complete confidence in Flores and his staff getting Tua where he needs to be.

  3. Tim Knight says:

Why don’t we just watch Tua develop and see how high he can go in his game? This offense isn’t exactly an accomplished group. It’s very young throughout the roster. I’m enjoying watching the defense and STs carry us while the offense tries to do their part and get better.

I think we’re all a bit shocked that we’re 8-4 and in the playoff mix one season removed from the blow up 2019 season. Enjoy the fast track rebuild season. We have already ended any chance at a losing season. I’m totally enjoying it. We’re watching it come together as fans but the rest of the NFL world sees it too. I have more people I know who are fans of other teams saying you guys are on the right track than I’ve heard in years. It’s obvious! 🙂

    • CavalierKong says:

“Why don’t we just watch Tua develop and see how high he can go in his game?”
      ——

Will us talking about his proficiencies and deficiencies somehow stop or impede that process? LOL

Aren’t you the one who always says what we do here won’t affect anything? 😉

  4. olddolphan says:

PERHAPS SOMEONE HAS ALREADY ADDRESSED THIS BUT – – – I believe that the Chief’s game was previously designated as a “Throw Back Uniform” home game for the Dolphins.
IF TRUE, this will be a significant advantage for the home team AGAIN!! – – The combination of the Large, full-bodied Dolphin, the Large, over sized, letters and the even larger numbers has become a symbol of this franchise in its more dominant years, especially during the ’70’s. I’d like to see the Fins W-L record when wearing these old-style unis. I’m sure ALL would be impressed!!
    —————————-
NOT GETTING WILLIAMS BACK for THIS game is a major setback. But, as Miami has already proven, they CAN overcome adversity and still beat a really good team. THIS GAME IS NO EXCEPTION. We have the coach, the defense, the special teams, the improving O-Line and an improving rookie quarterback who can get the job done on Saturday.

As for the intangibles, we’ve got the Throwback Uniforms, the Home Field Advantage, the Heat, and, I HOPE, LADY LUCK ON OUR SIDE. I have a hunch that, somehow, more than 10,000 Dolfans will find a way to get into the stadium to RESTORE THE ROAR!!!

EVERYONE KNOWS THIS IS THE BIGGEST GAME OF THE SEASON, SO FAR. I am VERY SURE Coach “Flo” will demand, and GET, the best performance this team is capable of this Sunday!!!
    ————-
DON’T SELL THESE GUYS SHORT! – – I’ll be back with my exact prediction by Friday Night!

    • CavalierKong says:

I’m pretty you’re right that we’re in the throwbacks this week.

And if I remember correctly we have another game this year in throwbacks, not sure which game though.

      • Mike E. says:

        Maybe the finale against BUF?

      • CavalierKong says:

        That would make sense

      • olddolphan says:

CAVKONG; If you’re right, I’d say the final home game vs. the Belicheats is the most likely game for the throwbacks. That said, for me, the best time for the throwbacks would be SB LV at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa!!!

ICYW – – (In Case You’re Wondering), the Dolphins wore their All-White unis for SB VII to complete the Perfect Season and their Aqua Jerseys with White Pants when they massacred the Vikings in SB VIII.

  5. Ken says:

I am puzzled by how people are say Tua has a weak arm. I mean are they watching the games this year but his tape from Alabama? Tua had, has and continues to have a very strong arm. The ball to Grant was over 60 yards in the air.

    • Tim Knight says:

Right on his hands. That was a Marino to Duper type pass. The difference is Duper makes that catch.

      • Ken says:

        Exactly

      • Tim Knight says:

I love Grant as a return man, he’s a weapon on jet sweeps and he contributes as a WR. He has the speed to break a big play at any time. But he’s not a reliable WR.

      • Ken says:

I view Grant as a slot WR. Jet sweeps, crossing routes and WR screens. Get him the ball in space and let him make a man miss and he is off to the races. He has the speed to be a deep threat but I don’t think he is a good enough route runner and he doesn’t have the necessary ball skills to win contested catches

    • CavalierKong says:

Ken, every QB in the league except perhaps the very weakest can throw it 55-60 yds min. Again, check out the article and the metrics, According to those metrics, he’s about average for the NFL.

That doesn’t translate to ‘weak’ in my book. There are a lot of very strong armed QBs in the league right now, and just because he doesn’t have Allen’s or Mahomes’ arm, doesn’t mean he’s weak IMO. He can make all the throws he needs to make, and that is what counts.

      • CavalierKong says:

And I’ll say the same thing to you, I said to M13, I provided metrics, you provided a statement.

Sticking your fingers in your ears and going “lalalala-Tua has a strong arm” doesn’t make it so, lol.

      • Ken says:

I have read scouting reports calling Tua the best deep ball thrower in the draft last year. Arm strength is not the only element to that but it is a significant on that and no not every QB can throw a ball 60 yards in the air. I agree Tua doesn’t have Allen or Mahomes arm but his arm is strong. It’s not just average it is well above that

      • CavalierKong says:

And I’ve read scouting reports that say he has an average arm. Being a good deep ball thrower has nothing to do with having a cannon arm. Again, you can call it way above average, but saying it doesn’t make it so. Provide anything other than an eye test.

The report on Tua is his max is about 55-60 yards. Show me a video where Tua throws it 70 yards. Show me some other metric to dispute the one I provided that shows he is anything other than an average arm.

And I said all but the weakest can throw it that far, not all the QBs ca. The weakest QBs in the league can’t throw it 60 yards, but most of the QBs in the league can. So throwing it 60 yards doesn’t prove he has a top arm.

The metrics I provided show he’s very close to DeShaun Watson in arm strength. I’ve never thought of Watson as a weak armed QB.

      • Ken says:

I agree with the DeShaun Watson comparison in terms of arm strength which is clearly above average. I don’t know what Metrics you want to measure it by how far, velocity or the like but for people to say on here that Tua has a weak arm is head scratching

      • CavalierKong says:

I’ve said again and again I don’t think he has a weak arm, and he can make all the throws, it’s just not elite. It is average for the NFL based on the metrics I put up. But part of the disconnect in our discussion may be the phrase ‘average for the NFL’.

The NFL isn’t what it used to be. When you have 7 or 8 QBs that can throw it to the moon, and a slow of QBs just under that, it changes what ‘average’ is.

So our common ground is he can make all the necessary throws, and he isn’t weak armed, lol.

      • CavalierKong says:

        *slew

    • olddolphan says:

KEN: Normally your points of view are well reasoned and fair minded. But, now, Ken, you’ve lowered yourself to picking on the visually impaired (at least until Mike E. makes his way to Ocala).

C’mon, Ken. –YOU can do BETTER THAN THAT!!

  6. pheloniusphish says:

How about we say Tua currently has average+ arm strength, is accurate, and has a quick release? Leave it there?

  7. Tim Knight says:

What I love about Tua is that he’s not a nervous guy who’s afraid to make a big throw. He’s not out there checking down all day. He has a killer instinct. We have a chance to build a juggernaut team in the offseason.

But we have a current season going on that is so much fun. I’m so looking forward to the Chiefs game. 🙂

  8. Tim Knight says:

Ken, I agree on Grant. He’s not very good tracking the ball on deep passes but I don’t mind us trying it here and there. Grant also has questionable hands. But then when he does make a catch he’s dangerous out there. I’m a fan of him because he brings that speed role in so many ways.

  9. CavalierKong says:

And can we stop with “the eye test” as a valid argument? It’s fine for general statements, but when getting down to details it’s hilarious that anyone thinks the eye test is a valid way to differentiate between a .35 second release and a .45 second release, or a QB that can throw the ball with 55 MPH velocity and one that can throw it with 60 MPH, lol.

    • Tim Knight says:

None of the metrics are an eye test. It’s how you view the game. Most scouting comes from the eye test.

      • CavalierKong says:

I genuinely don’t understand how that applies to what I wrote. Are you agreeing, disagreeing, or saying something different altogether? lol

  10. CavalierKong says:

And why the f&ck doesn’t Baskin and Robins have more than 31 flavors now? WTF, they aren’t even called 31 flavors anymore!

  11. manitobafinfan says:

So totally weird thing happened at work today…

boss advises carpet cleaners coming tonight so move all we can and lift the plexiglass chair/floor guards

My headset died so I am on The phone holding receiver to my ear.. decide to pull up the guard.. so much static electricity that I get a Zap in the ear that is attached to phone, to the point I drop the receiver , and the phone disconnects. .. holy shit that hurt ..

Hoping that the electro shock therapy lobotomy kills off any lingering effects of BP…

  12. Krishna says:

I’m not shocked we’re 8-4, I’m disappointed it’s taken us so long to be 8-4. Thank god, I get to see it again.

    I want more!

  13. manitobafinfan says:

Definitely enjoying the ride of this season , I do not EXPECT to win this week , but for a change I do not call this week game a foregone conclusion for loss

  14. CavalierKong says:

It has been a fantastic season. If we finish it with a playoff game+, icing on the cake.

I think regardless of how the season ends, our real fun starts next year.

  15. Ken says:

Kong I never said you said Tua’s arm was weak. The others on here that have and that is who I was referring to in my original post

    • CavalierKong says:

So everything isn’t always about me? LOL

Gotcha, I just assumed that was for me. 🙂

      • Ken says:

LOL not about you but MF 13 has said it and ORob has said it and I was referring to them

      • Ken says:

I always don’t have the time or the inclination to go search tape to prove my point at this time. Bottom line is I think we agree Tua’s arm is just fine contrary to others on here who have called it weak

      • CavalierKong says:

Yep, I can sum up my thoughts thusly- If I were to make a list of things that concern me about Tua, arm strength isn’t on the list.

  16. CavalierKong says:

Toba, I only watched 2 seasons of Breaking Bad, then dropped it because the stupid ending to season 2 pissed me off. I’ve never watched Better Call Saul, so I don’t get the reference, unless it’s just he is at times an ornery, arguing, lol.

  17. pheloniusphish says:

Ken/Kong, I love peace! And making! My feeling is hurt.

  18. The Flying Pig says:

    I want 31 flavors on 1 cone

  19. Ken says:

    OD:
    I acknowledge your admonishment lol

  20. The Flying Pig says:

  21. Rockphin says:

    This also from that article:

    3) Jordan Love

Frankly, I had more fun analyzing Love’s tape than any of the other QBs. Rocket arm? Check. Big-play potential? Check. Horrendous telegraphing of some of his throws? Also, check. Love’s interception reel is the football equivalent of a Saw movie. When you watch it, you just wonder when the unnecessary violence is going to end.

  22. CavalierKong says:

Sheesh, I forgot there was a game on right now. Hey Cowboys are in it.

  23. CavalierKong says:

Stupid Dallas kicker is 1-3 tonight.

  24. manitobafinfan says:

Ken I agree. Maple Bacon BACON is good , anything else Maple bacon flavoured anything is horrid .. actually outside of Bacon and bacon bits , and maple syrup, I don’t like anything with those flavours

  25. wyoming85 says:

Lamar looks like he’s never thrown a football sometimes!

  26. Rockphin says:

    Come on, let’s go Dallas!

  27. Rockphin says:

oh! missed another one! Dallas needs a kicker!

  28. ElephantRider says:

    Fuck Baskin Robbins.
All those different flavors and they got rid of the only good one. Chocolate Oreo!

  29. ElephantRider says:

Jordan Love isnt even the backup. He’s inactive every week. He’ll never see the field in GB. ARod is going nowhere.

  30. Tim Knight says:

Dallas is that bad. Jerry Jones is the GM. It’s been catching up with him for years. You’re the owner not a talent evaluator or team builder. He’s been playing fantasy football at the highest level.

Stephen Ross handed the keys to Chris Grier who hired Brian Flores and look at what’s going on within two years. Football people making decisions, not egotistical owners.

  31. ocalarob says:

    just what i thought,

look at the 8:33 part of the video, grant is running his route from Tua’s right to left, Tua throws the ball to Grants right side making him break off his direction and go back to the right. the throw made the degree of difficulty go up for Grant. he had to almost willie mays the catch. going back to his right and fingertip the ball, tua should have lead him as he was running.
    not a good throw

    • Ken says:

      Child Please. 🤣

    • Ken says:

You obviously didn’t listen to the analysis of the throw on the video you posted. Turn the volume up next time you watch it 😁

      • ocalarob says:

I don’t need to listen to a biased opinion, i can form my own.
maybe you should take off the Tua shaded glasses and watch the throw and the adjustment Grant had to make.

      • Ken says:

ORob all doing is ruining your own credibility with incessant rant. I just love the irony when you post something to prove your point but all your post does is disprove it 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

    • The Flying Pig says:

Trying to keep an open mind

But it looks like a perfect read and a perfect throw

    • Rhino says:

Watched this about six times. I get the point that if the ball were more to the left it may have been an easier catch… The safety in the middle may have dictated the need to throw more to the right (just in case he recovered after biting) …

However, Grant never came close to “Willie Mays” … in fact his body was positioned/turned left with full visions of the ball the entire way.

It seems Grant may have slowed down a bit thinking he’d have to come back for the ball, but when it didn’t ‘hang’ he had a quick burst where he had to stretch out his arms to “catch up” rather than “come back”. I think it’s simply a matter of Grant learning that Tua can make that throw and developing the chemistry to read his deep passes better.

  32. son of a son of a shula says:

With a win Sunday we remain alive for the number one seed in the AFC, lose and it’s over.

  33. wyoming85 says:

  34. Krishna says:

This will be a great test for our defense. I think I said this before, I know I thought it….lol. Not sure if we’re at full strength, but no matter, we need to ball.

  35. Krishna says:

    TOP will be critical.

STs can win this game, too. Grant, call fair catch, don’t muff, and catch the fucking ball even when it’s not perfect.

Now, is the stretch of games to see if you’re worthy.

    Bring it!

  36. Mike E. says:

Krish – TOP isn’t as critical as you might think. We know the Chiefs can get down the field and score in a hurry. It’s about not letting them score TD’s. I know you remember the MNF game against the Colts when Manning beat us and the Colts only had the ball for about 16 minutes compared to our 44 minutes and we lost. Forcing turnovers and getting more possessions and us scoring on those possessions can beat them. I don’t like our chances in a shootout, so we have to either turn them over or limit their end zone trips.

    • The Flying Pig says:

If we create turnovers and don’t have put own
I’m thinking that’s the path to victory

I realize this doesn’t say much after writing it

May have well have said, if we score more points then them we win

      ….which is true….

  37. Rhino says:

Confidence levels elevate after a win, regardless of the team we played.

I think our defense is up to the challenge. I think our DBs want to prove how good they are. Nevertheless, some of the things we did against rookie QBs to confuse, won’t work with Mahomes. Contain him.

I know it sounds crazy, but shut down the run and make Chiefs throw the ball because they have to throw at the strongest part of our team. They will get some, but so will we.

The REAL key to being competitive against the Chiefs is whether we can score 30+
If they go up tempo I think they can get at least 24 pts., but will that be enough?

  38. Krishna says:

Mike E., I know it’s a flawed stat, but limiting the number of opportunities your opponent has, does play a big factor.

D needs to be big this game, imo

  39. Rhino says:

Home Field and Throwbacks for the needed points
Couldn’t find a list started up thread …

    🦏 27-24 🐬

  40. Rhino says:

We also get to cheer for Pittsburgh vs Bills without conflicted emotions. 🙂

  41. Krishna says:

If we go 3 and out every series and lose TOP, we will be blasted, imo. Way too many opportunities will be provided.

We need to control the clock and make it a short game.

  42. Krishna says:

I do remember the Colts game. We don’t have the same defense as what we had then either. I hope I never see that again from a Dolphin team. I don’t even think the Colts had a full quarter of TOP.

  43. CavalierKong says:

    🦍 31-24 🐬

  44. CavalierKong says:

I’d just like to see a team that is prepared and looks like they belong. I’d like to see us play a good game for 60 minutes and let the chips fall where they may.

The fact is we don’t have the talent they do on offense, but I’d say they don’t have the talent we do on defense either. I don’t know about their special teams, but I’ll stack our ST up against anyone.

So we should be able to outplay them in 2 phases of the game. If our offense can put together a good, strong game, I don’t see why we can’t win. They are the best team in the league, but they are not invincible.

Look at the 5:44 mark where he says Grant has to make that catch. NFL receivers have to make that catch bottom line. Every receiver has to adjust a little sometimes. Grant didn’t have to adjust much at all to catch that ball. He stumbled just a bit. That’s on him. He doesn’t have that split second stumble that ball is perfectly placed and he is off to the races. IMO

  48. bailbondmike says:

IMO, I think arm strength can be overrated. See Pennington (before injury), Brees, Mahomes and others. Mahomes doesn’t have a cannon, far from it. Actually, Mahomes down field accuracy isn’t the greatest. Tua is better than him in that regard. Mahomes just has receivers who catch the damn ball. It’s comes down to what else you get in the package with that arm. With Brees you get amazing accuracy and a cerebral QB who knows immediately what the defense is doing on the level of Peyton Manning. Mahomes you get a QB who has an uncanny ability to extend plays and make crazy throws. Tua is just the same. Not in comparison to what Brees or Mahomes do on the field but what he brings to the table in his own package. Unfortunately what we are seeing and what we have to be patient with is Tua’s adjustment to the NFL game. This process is taking time and going to take more time. Part of what is slowing this process is the weapons he was used to having in college against lesser talented defenses most of the time. I guess you can say he was spoiled in that regard. He does not have those caliber of weapons right now. Couple that with him having to learn what different teams are throwing at him every week. Shit, give 2/3’s of the QB’s in this league the weapons Mahomes has and see what they do. Someone said last game he was thinking to much which I agree, but mainly in the first half. Second half, he played much more relaxed.

Measure the arm strength of every starting QB in the league and I am sure he falls somewhere in the middle which is more than sufficient. The game still just has to slow down for him more and when it does, you will see the Tua we saw against AZ every week.

    • CavalierKong says:

I don’t disagree with your premise, you don’t have to have a rocket arm to succeed, but you’re wrong about Mahomes. He has a cannon. Have you seen the video of him literally throwing the ball out of the stadium? lol

Here’s video of him throwing 70 yds, he looks like he’s barely trying. He may have the strongest arm in the league other than Allen.

Well ya summabitch, how about this 80 yd throw by Mahomes on his pro day?

I mean sure, the ball was filled with hydrogen, the yards were marked off using 2/3rds of a yard stick, and there was a hidden wind machine at his back, but it still went 80 sorta-yards. lol

look at this decision, he had mack wide open looking right at him and threw it to a covered parker. where was his quick release on this play?

  61. bailbondmike says:

Stanger, that is why I am so high on Zaven Collins. He is a big versatile LB (6’4 260) like Kyle Van Noy (6’3 250).

Pros: He will align on the edge where he will rush or drop and he will also align stacked inside. He is a very good athlete with loose hips, fluidity and range for the position. In the passing game he demonstrates good agility and body control to play on his feet in his zone drops. His good instincts allow him to get in the passing lanes and easily comes up to make tackles in space. He demonstrates the mental aptitude to get guys shifted and aligned pre-snap while also executing the call. He has length to set the edge but could definitely afford to get stronger at the point to make him more suited to set the edge. On 3rd downs he displays the athleticism and POSITIONAL FLEXABILITY to rush, drop or play in coverage. This players skill set REMINDS ME OF KYLE VAN NOY of the 2014 NFL Draft for his FLUIDITY, ATHLETICISM and VERSATILITY to be used in a variety of ways on defense.

Cons: Collins’ athleticism suggests he should be a more dominant pass rusher but definitely has a tremendous amount of upside in this regard; you just may need to wait it out as he develops more nuance here. Collins could also afford to get a little more pop in his hips and hands at the point of attack to stack up the POA and hold the line. Has moments inside where disengaging can be a bit of a challenge for him. He could be more of a decisive, violent downhill player on run downs.

I posted this video a while back but just need to again for Rhino. 😉 I don’t know if he is 4.52 fast like Van Noy when he came out but, at 6’4 260, he can move. He has 4 sacks, 2 FF and 4 INT’s with 2 pick 6’s so far this season. This game he had 15 tackles and the 96 yard pick 6 for the game winner in OT.

Actually it is a comment drawn on my professional experience as a trial lawyer. I have seen it countless times where a witness losing credibility in front of a jury when the witness refuses to accept a simple fact that no one else disputes which is exactly what you are doing

as a trial lawyer you should be biased and discredit the opposition, but not on a friendly blog. just state your opinion.
the evidence is in the video counselor. it’s clear!
Tua threw the ball as to hit him in stride yet he threw it to his right side as he was going left. having to change direction slowed him down so he was no longer in sync with the ball Tua had thrown.
he made a great effort on a fingertip grab.

looking at the play objectively and finding fault why it didn’t succeed would have to be put on the QB for the weak throw.

      JMHO

      • Ken says:

You are the only one I have heard and not just on this blog that thinks it was a poor throw

It’s the circles you run in, you all have the same shades.

actually it was a great play and Tua did make a great read pulling the safety up to pick up parker which left Grant in a 1 on 1 foot race.

the ball was just slightly a bad throw.
if he hits Grant in stride between the numbers without grant having to adjust to the bad throw it’s 6 points.

      • Ken says:

He hit Grant in stride. This is the simple fact that you seem incapable of accepting

      • Ken says:

You should be happy we have a QB who can make that throw and the desire should be to find a WR who won’t drop it like Grant

      • ocalarob says:

but let’s just go ahead and blame Grant, after all he wasn’t taken with the 5th overall pick.

      • Ken says:

Doesn’t matter where anyone was picked Tua put the ball on Grants hands and Grant failed to catch it. Draft position is irrelevant.

  63. bailbondmike says:

Cav, thanks for correcting me on Mahomes. Maybe I got that impression because he moves around a lot and throws off balance to where he can’t put as much zip on it. That’s what’s crazy good about him is he can make those throws and not have to have his feet set but gets the ball where it needs to be. He is probably the most unique talent at QB we have seen in a long time and to hear him say he is still learning to read defenses is scary.

    • CavalierKong says:

Cheers, BBM. Yeah, agreed on him being a unique talent at QB. I’m still flabbergasted he threw a no look pass in an actual game. If I was his coach, I’d say “That was awesome. Don’t ever do it again.” LOL

  64. ocalarob says:

Ken, look at the video from the 10:28 mark, you will see grant heading left to the hashmarks, then look at the 10:34 mark, in that span of time he went from going towards the hash marks to going away.

Just came in too hard or started the flip landing too late. Anyway they’ll consider it a success because they’ll gain a ton of telemetry data and SN9 is already on deck.

Not sure how I deserve to get called out for a mere opinion. What’s more, it would seem I’m the only one here who understands what Tua’s had to do in order to get back to playing.

It’s truly remarkable that he was back to playing (not to mention, starting), less than a year removed from what could have been a career-ruining injury.

Tim and I have accurately referred to Tua in his own words… that he’s still not back to 100%. When he runs, he feels like he’s far slower. And clearly (vs his college tape), his arm isn’t back to 100% in terms of velocity.
    .
Eye test, ink-blot test, COVID test… whatever. He’s clearly not 100%, Tua HIMSELF has openly admitted it, and I’m one of the few who maintains that Tua is going to get ever better year after year. Between Tua’s injury last year and this COVID-ridden year (remember, Tua didn’t have a natural off-season of strength training… he was REHABBING), I feel he’s going to be just fine for us.

    ___________________________________________________

I’m not trying to be over critical of Tua, I know he’s a rookie and will get better with time, i’m being very over critical of this F.O. who selected him 5th overall!
    he has played 5 games
only twice he’s thrown over 200 yards, twice he hasn’t reached 100 yards, the other game was a disappointing 160 yards! and he was benched for lack of performance, his performance stat wise is pathetic!

look at Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert, they are lighting it up on shitty teams! Miami has done nothing but screw up talent evaluation.
we gave up a 2nd for Josh Rosen and just released him! we could have chosen DK Metcalf with that pick!
we passed on Justin Herbert and selected Tua.
how good would this team be with both them on the roster.
I know hindsight is 20’20 and i was not too sure about Herbert on draft day, but i’m not getting paid to evaluate talent for the dolphins.
look at iggy! we selected him in the 1st WTF!
the bottomline, Tua has so far not come anywhere near living up to his draft status, that’s not on him that’s on the idiots who drafted him there.
this team has a history of moronic moves and the hits just keep on coming!

  84. ocalarob says:

my evaluation of Tua on draft day was that he could be a run of the mill qb, the same type QB that you could get in later rounds, his arm strength is mediocre, he small for a qb and has limited athletic ability.
