Week 16 – Dolphins @ Raiders

Week 16 of the 2020 NFL Season. 2020 has been a really trying year for all of us, some more than others of course. Some have lost friends or relatives to COVID-19, others struggle to keep their businesses and/or households intact due to COVID-19 restrictions. I feel for all of you. One thing we can all say has been a blessing is the rise of our favorite football team, the Miami Dolphins. We won’t win the division this year, the Buffalo Bills have already clinched that. At 9-5, we are right in the thick of it though and currently hold the #7 seed in the AFC. Our team’s development has been a shining light, and that light still burns bright as we head to Sin City, Las Vegas Nevada to play the 7-7 Raiders. The Raiders have built a beautiful new stadium there and nothing would be better for us to take one more big step towards our first playoff berth since 2016, when Ryan Tannehill was our QB and then tore up his knee in Game 13, and Matt Moore faced the Pittsburgh Steelers in the playoffs and ended our season on a sour note. Not coincidentally, that was the last year the Miami Dolphins had a 1,000 yard rusher, Jay Ajayi.

This is an exciting time for our fanbase our franchise. It’s so different than 2016. In 2016 I never felt like we really belonged with the other playoff teams, and no offense to Ryan Tannehill, but even if we had his services against the Steelers, I’m not sure we would have fared much better. We weren’t nearly as well rounded as we are now. It’s amazing the transformation we’ve gone through in such a short time. I truly feel like no team wants to face the 2020 Miami Dolphins while I think in 2016, they were licking their lips to face us in the playoffs. We have made major strides on the defensive side and now are the #1 defense in points allowed at 254 which is a stingy 18.4 PPG. In 2020 in the NFL, that’s really saying something. I was listening to WQAM and I wish I could find the record to confirm what I think I heard yesterday. I believe they said since Brian Flores took over as Head Coach, the Miami Dolphins are 20-6 against the spread. That’s unbelievable.

So here we sit at 9-5, heading to Las Vegas to play the Raiders in their beautiful new home. It’s looking very much like Derek Carr will be starting, but with our defense, I’m sure there must be a side bet as to whether he finishes. Carr has been practicing and is on track to play, but Marcus Mariota will no doubt be ready to play. A QB with an injured groin for the Dolphins defense is like throwing chum in the water to a sea of sharks. The Dolphins have so many players questionable for this game it’s absurd, but the big ones to me are the availability of DeVante Parker, Mike Gesicki. We already know that Myles Gaskin will likely settle in as the lead RB, but will probably share the workload at least this week, more evenly with Salvon Ahmed who eclipsed 1oo yards last week against the Patriots, and to a lesser extent Matt Breida who is now healthy as well. I won’t be surprised if we have a running game against the Raiders but it will depend on how their defense fares. We might need more Tua than I expect. The other players I’ll be watching for is whether LG Ereck Flowers is able to suit up, right now it looks like rookie Solomon Kindley will miss this one. If Flowers can’t go, this will once again thrust Michael Deiter to start at LG with veteran Jesse Davis filling in at RG. Both players played well last week against the Patriots. Also, it’s unclear as to whether WR/PR/KR Jakeem Grant will be able to play. While he’s been uneven as a receiver, he’s provided plenty of pop in the return game. Out of the 12 players the Dolphins have listed on the injury report, only 2 had full participation, CB Xavien Howard and S Kavon Frazier. G Solomon Kindley and S Clayton Fejedelem both did not participate.

While the Raiders at 7-7 have a very uncertain path to playoffs, unlikely even, the Dolphins with wins on Saturday against the Raiders and then against Buffalo will guarantee them a spot in the playoffs. If that were to occur, it’s likely the Dolphins would have to play the AFC East champion Bills back to back weeks. Let’s take this one week at a time though, shall we? Let’s take care of business this week first and then we can thirst for a chance to make the playoffs a real possibility. I hope all of you here at FMU have a wonderful holiday season and a very Merry Christmas to all of you and our readers who don’t post here (If there are any)

Mike E — way to put it down like it is, especially one game at a time.

Was laughing at this though — “A QB with an injured groin for the Dolphins defense is like throwing chum in the water to a sea of sharks.” We’re Dolphins damn it. Ever watch Flipper take on sharks? 🙂

  5. Nice write up Mike E.
Merry Christmas and Happy (belated) Hanukah everyone…Happy holidays whatever you celebrate!

2020 been a bitch of a year for so many people, but I really appreciate you taking a moment Mike to point out a silver lining. Focusing on silver linings is the only thing that has gotten me and my business through this dumpster fire of a year.

Proud of our Fins for giving us something to be thankful for in a year when we needed it so badly.

Here’s to 2021 being a whole new deal. It’s gonna be a rough start covid and economy wise, but hopefully vaccine distribution will be ramped up in the next couple of months, the impact on ICU beds will be dampened, and we can all get back to work and a chance to enjoy the new (new, new, new) normal.

    Cheers!

Seems the rooks on the right side have been getting it done. Bit of Davis too.

“Dolphins running back Myles Gaskin averaged more yards running off the right side this season (5.9 yards per carry) than any other gap according to the charting of Pro Football Focus. Ahmed averages 6.1 per carry working off the right side to the perimeter.”

Those downfield blocks by the rookies!!! This is why I would not be surprised to see a high pick on ANOTHER interior lineman amongst our first four picks. Get that same thing going on the left side of the line.

  7. Randy's avatar Randy says:

There are lots of ways to build a good team. Rinse and repeat can work, but you still have to find and keep a core of really good, high end players. It’s hard to constantly churn the top of your roster and win at a high level. If you do, you need to be able to pretty consistently hit on the draft picks you keep trading for. Otherwise, all you’re doing is churning an average roster. I don’t care how good your coaching or organization is. You won’t win championships with an average roster. Trade away high end talent when it’s what is clearly best for you as a team (injury issues, bad contract, amazing deal, etc) not just to keep churning. The Tunsil trade, to me, was a no-brainer. Gave up really good talent but for a great deal. If X brought that sort of deal? B’bye! Lol

    ——————–
The Raiders’ defense has been a mess the last few weeks. We need to take advantage of this by comin’ out smokin’ in the first quarter. DON’T LET THEM GET CONFIDENT!! If Las Vegas sells out on stopping the run, we MUST let TUA take advantage of them with his crisp 8 to 15 yard lasers down the field. Last week, our running attack was the deciding factor. This week it could be the passing game that provides the margin of victory. Throw in a couple of turnovers forced by our defense plus a trick play or two and I see the game as – – –

JESUS!!! – – Western Kentucky had a 49-10 lead midway through the 3rd quarter when I stopped watching their bowl game vs. Central Michigan. Central scored a touchdown as the clock ran out to close to within 49-48. The Chippewas failed on the 2-point conversion, saving Western from the greatest collapse loss in bowl history!!

This is Western Kentucky’s FIRST EVER WIN as a Division I school in a bowl game. I’m sure their followers will NEVER forget this one!

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

      Good stuff

      Trent Dilfer:
“Tua is a generational talent. He does stuff you can’t teach. Now, I get it, you watch the games and he’s in more a managerial role. I see that, and that’s what the need him to be. They are not uber talented offensively. They are also playing it very close to the vest, they are a three-phase complementary team. They are trying to maximize every single opportunity they get.

“The fact that he can do that, when he’s coming from a situation at Alabama where it was wide open and push it down the field all the time, is actually a compliment to Tua. Because many highly aggressive passers, who are uber talented and very comfortable with high-risk stuff, if you ask them to pull back the reigns and play a more managerial role – they can’t do it.”

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO DOLPHIN FANS WORLDWIDE!!!
    ————————
TODAY, DEC.25,2020, IS THE 49TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MIAMI DOLPHINS FIRST PLAYOFF WIN IN FRANCHISE HISTORY.

It is simply known as “The Longest Game.” Dec. 25, 1971, a day that will live forever to this Old Dolfan.

The Chiefs were prohibitive favorites. They were the defending Super Bowl champions, having upset the Vikings in Super Bowl IV. To quote Jimmy the Greek Snyder, “The Dolphins have NO CHANCE. Two seasons ago they only won 3 games. There’s NO WAY THEY COME INTO KANSAS CITY and beat the Chiefs on their home turf! There are no Santa Clauses in football!”

    WRONG, Jimmy!

Future Hall of Fame kicker Jan Stenerud missed a 32 yard field goal. Then, he missed a 29-yarder.
Then, in the first overtime, his 42 yard attempt WAS BLOCKED!!

The Chiefs running back/kick returner Ed Podolak had the game of a lifetime, totaling 349 yards rushing, receiving and returning kicks. But it wouldn’t be enough. With his running game bogged down by a stingy Chiefs defense (led by future HOFer Willie Lanier), Bob Griese turned to the air game to rally his team 3 times to finally force an overtime. Griese passed for 263 yards on 20 completions (seven to the incomparable Paul Warfield who tallied 140 yards receiving). Conversely, Chiefs QB Len Dawson was only able to reach his favorite target, Otis Taylor, three times for a paltry 12 yards.

Midway through the second overtime, from the Miami 35, Griese called for a “roll right, trap left” running play. This misdirection play worked to perfection with Norm Evans and Larry Little leading the way as Larry Csonka lumbered all the way to Kansas City’s 36. Carefully, Griese worked the ball to the 30, right in the center of the sloppy field. (At this time, the goal posts were still on the goal line, not on the end line as they are now.) Garo Yepremian trotted on the field. Karl Noonan’s hold was perfect. And the smallest Dolphin drilled the winning 37-yard field goal to win “The Longest Game!”

DOLFANS EVERYWHERE were treated to an unbelievable Christmas gift. The gift of their FIRST EVER PLAYOFF VICTORY!! I watched in disbelief from my cheap apartment at Sandia Army Base in Albuquerque as my favorite team basked in their unexpected glory. I immediately called my brother-in-law Jim in Pompano Beach. We were both incredulous at what we had seen. And I told him I was already looking forward to the 1972 season because I would get out of the Army in time to see most of that season!

Those 1971 Dolphins went on to upset the favored Baltimore Colts in the AFC Championship Game played in the historic Orange Bowl the following week. The joy ride would come to an abrupt halt when Roger Staubach and the Cowboys defeated Miami 24-3 in the Super Bowl. But NOTHING could take away the pleasure of winning The Longest Game in Kansas City.

It was the BEST Christmas gift I’ve ever had!!

Miami’s offense seems basic and predictable, it’s always an RPO or bootleg / run option. very seldom do we see a vertical passing game, maybe due to Tua’s short comings.

it has it’s ups and downs, maybe a safe way to limit mistakes but it would seem to have limit on offensive output, that’s why we see these games that Tua throws for145 yards.

playing this way may put a ceiling on how good this offense can get and may not be able to compete with elite teams in the future.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, probably scaling back the offense completely because Tua really sucks and can’t throw the ball down the field. They’re going to have to do their best to protect the QB they should have never drafted and were obviously duped by. There must have been some secret pact between us and Alabama that forced us to draft him. We’ll have to just hope for the best, but it’s going to be ugly.

  66. Ken's avatar Ken says:

We don’t run that much RPO. If you watch the games you would know. We use primarily on 3rd and short and goal line situations. We have not being going for deep throws because we have no healthy receivers and when we do go long Grant usually fucks it up. But nice try

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Bizzaro World. One RPO play in that tape. Do you look at the stuff you post?

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

It’s all right to be wrong Ken, we run heavy RPO’s normally trying to hit the quick slant. or just handing it off.
        It’s one of Tua’s strengths

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

        7:01 mark of video
        RPO’s

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

But the tape you posted only shows one RPO play you must not know what an RPO play looks like so let me explain it to. It is a play where the QB puts the ball into the gut of the RB. The QB then has to read the defense primarily the DE. If the DE commits to stop the run the QB has a decision to make he can take it and run outside the edge or if the safeties come up he can pull it out and throw and if finally if the safeties and DE play contain then QB can continue with the hand off. A play where the QB drops back and decided to tuck the ball and run is not an RPO. Now that you know this I would suggest you rewatch the tape you posted

  67. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i have seen some nice limited vertical throws to Gesicki, the ones to Grant were not very good throws, he needs to correct that part of his game.

  68. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

nothing wrong with running RPO’s and bootlegs, i just wish we had a better vertical threat to keep Ds honest.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Right now, who are the guys running vertical routes? Think of who our receivers are with Parker hobbled and Grant out. It’s not all on Tua, we don’t have the guys that can do it.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

it’s just not the last game, it;s the same when parker and grant are in there, they tried a couple of times to Grant and the throw wasn’t there.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think it’s more like the hands aren’t there. 🙂

Parker has been bothered for a few games now, and I think the guys like Bowden and Perry they’re just trying to keep it simple for them and hit them on short routes and let them get YAC.

  69. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – Sorry man, I think we’re at the silly point already with Tua. The guy has talent, you just don’t want to see it, and that includes arm talent. He’s more careful than Fitz, but honestly, careful wins playoff games and reckless sends you home. Tua is our best QB on the roster, gameday, anyway.

  70. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Play action isn’t the same thing as an RPO.

  71. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Ken, i think you need to watch the film, look how we play this minimal gain short passing game play after play, there’s no deep threat. Tua has a knack of having a 150 yard output.
my question is ……..so why is that?

  72. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Rob — no one was throwing a fit when Tua didn’t make the Pro Bowl. If your point is he needs to improve to be elite — don’t think anyone would argue with that. But he’s a rook who has played 7 games so far and we won 5 of them. He also has 9 TDs to 2 INTs and a pretty good QB rating.

Lets see what happens down the road.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i guess we have no choice but to see, i’m just worried that this offense is handcuffed with Tua, it wouldn’t be such a big deal if we didn’t pick him 5th overall.
that being the case how many years do we have to live with his short comings if in fact they are real?
it took 7 years with Tanny, i believe Tanny is a better QB.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Rob — I’d say what we have right now in Tua is an average NFL starting QB. We want more, but at least looks like he won’t be a bust. In fact, I’d say the strengths he’s show so far in terms of game management and ball protection indicate he should have a long career absent injury. Q is if he can become more than that.

  73. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

You guys should hold onto your receipts, there’s still time to return the Tua Fat Head that you got from Santa.

And, what are you willing to put out there?

  76. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Closest I can come to Stanger. Is a mustang on a pole.
    Stanger Name Meaning

English (mainly Newcastle and Durham): of uncertain origin, probably a derivative of northern Middle English stang ‘pole’ (of Old Norse origin). Possible meanings include a topographic name for someone who lived by a pole or stake (compare Stakes) or an occupational name for someone armed with one. Alternatively, it may be a nickname for someone who had ‘ridden the stang’, i.e. been carried on a pole through the streets as an object of derision, in punishment for some misdemeanor. However, this custom is of uncertain antiquity.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Fine by me. Other folks went with a bee (has a stinger) but a mustang on a pole ain’t bad either. Least the old english name didn’t mean a poop eater or something. 🙂

  82. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Tua hasn’t played half a season, no preseason, no off-season workouts, no last college season….DUE to injury.

Great evaluation, ORob. Talking about picking brains. Stellar observations.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Yep. He doesn’t respond to solid points for Tua and says hyperbolic statements like including Herbert with much better and more accomplished QBs like Ben, Rodgers, and Mahomes. It’s so laughable.

Hell, he doesn’t mention the most successful QB in history who also had questions about his arm…Tom Brady. I’d much rather see Tua become the next Brady than the next Rivers, Brees, or Rodgers honestly. Superbowl wins mean so much more in the conversation.

    _________________________________________-

the thing about Avg qbs are strengths and weaknesses, if a QB can’t overcome his weakness then opposing teams can take advantage of that and that makes this teams ceiling only go so high.
what concerns me about Tua’s shortcommings is; there may be nothing you can do about it.

he’s doesn’t have the size of an elite qb nor the arm strength, he so far has not had very good deep ball accuracy, his trajectory is flawed.
for him to complete a deep ball he has to have pin point accuracy due to his trajectory.
most deep threat QBs throw it up high in a good direction and let the wr run under the ball, Tua tries to throw more of a pin point dart.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

You have a very narrow view of what successful QBs can and cannot do. Your assessment is so limited and thus really flawed. Kinda a like your view on what a successful RB can or cannot do. Did you play football? LOL….

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Krishna — you ever met Rob? Very big guy. Would be shocked if he didn’t play.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Not sure if I did or not….if he’s very big guess he never played QB or RB. Lots of not very big QBs and RBs, most in fact.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If he played was for sure in the trenches….. unless he’s a lot faster than he looks. 🙂

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

ORob — we all want the next Marino, but he’s in the HOF for a reason. I’m no scout, but all of the attributes you are worried about are scoutable, measurable and show up on tape. Before he got hurt Tua was universally projected as #1 #1…… hence “Tank for Tua.” All those pro personnel guys at least saw something. Assume it is still there.

Phelon, If we win and Browns and Colts lose, we will pass them up as the #1 wild card team due to us having a better conference record. A Titans loss will not affect anything as they will retain their division lead with a Colts loss.

Raiders would be second team in a row we would eliminate from the playoffs.

Bottom line, we have to win this game.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

What is hurting us is our Strength of Victory (SOV). It is weak. If we are tied in record and conference record with any playoff eligible team, we lose out on SOV with all teams left in the race.

Bottom line, we have to win this game.
