Week 17 – Dolphins @ Bills

The last week of the 2020 NFL Regular season is upon us, and no matter what the outcome of our game versus the Buffalo Bills is, I’m thankful for our Dolphins for giving us a great season. Whether we win or lose, make the playoffs or don’t make the playoffs, I think I’d be hard pressed to find a Dolphins fan that feels that this 2020 team didn’t exceed their expectations. This team had a bumpy start but once we got rolling, we have been an ultra competitive team. Our worst loss was the first game of the season against the Patriots losing by 10 points. Since then, our loss to the Seahawks in Week 4 was our 2nd worst losing by 8. Our seasons point differential is +96. We are the #1 scoring defense (points allowed) at 18.8 in the NFL. If I told any of you we’d be traveling to Buffalo Week 17 with a 10-5 record as the #5 seed in the AFC, there’s not one of you who wouldn’t be thrilled with those circumstances.

I’m not going to bore with you with last week’s theatrics, we won a game we had no business winning but we did win, and now we live to fight another day. Coach Brian Flores has already decided that Tua Tagovailoa is the starter. Is this decision made for this week or for the future as well? I’d say in some ways it’s probably both, but I also believe that Flores believes Tua is his best QB. I don’t think Flores is a puppet and no one is pulling his strings. He’s making the personnel decisions and he’s declared Tua is the QB. Once again, I mean absolutely no disrespect to QB Ryan Fitzpatrick but there is a fine line between Fitzmagic and Fitztragic. He’s a gambler, and as everyone knows, sometimes ya win and sometimes ya lose. I’m going to enlighten some of you here, so be prepared. Over Ryan Fitzpatrick’s career, his TD% is 4.4 and his INT% is 3.3. Tua Tagovailoa in his short career has a TD% of 4.3 and an INT% of 0.9%. This doesn’t tell the entire story, and there are many metrics to look at, but I think Flores wants a player that’s careful with the football, and Tua Tagovailoa is that guy. That doesn’t mean he couldn’t be better, he can, and hopefully Sunday he will be.

The Bills are 12-3 for a reason. The best teams in the NFL score points, and the Bills are the 4th best scoring offense at 29.7 PPG. Their passing offense is #2 in the NFL throwing for 4,398 yards. Josh Allen is having a monster year, completing 69.1 % of his passes with 4,320 yards with 34 TD’s and just 9 INT’s. The Bills defense is stingier giving up yards than our Dolphins as they are ranked at the #10 defense in the NFL but they are allowing nearly a TD more per game than our defense. Their rushing attack is on par with our own rushing attack and they have used a 1-2 punch with Devin Singletary and Zack Moss. They are 19th in the league rushing and we are 22nd. The problem is their rushing attack doesn’t stop with these 2. QB Josh Allen is a legitimate weapon with over 4oo yards rushing and 8 rushing TD’s. When they’re in the red zone, you have to account for the QB running as well.

On the injury front, we know that LB Elandon Roberts is OUT along with Jakeem Grant. Practicing on a limited basis were WR DeVante Parker, OL Solomon Kindley and S Bobby McCain. McCain is not a threat to miss the game. Both TE Mike Gesicki and G Ereck Flowers were both FULL participants. That’s good news. I think Elandon Roberts is done for the season and that’s unfortunate. He wouldn’t be getting as many snaps this week anyway because the Bills throw the ball more. Can we talk about a Dolphins defender who gets very little ink in NFL circles? #55, Jerome Baker is having a great season. He leads the Dolphins with 108 tackles, he has 11 QB hits, 7 tackles for a loss along with 7 sacks and 2 forced fumbles. This really is a no-name defense, with the exception of X who is known league wide. So many contributors including lesser known Zach Sieler, Elandon Roberts, Eric Rowe, Andrew Van Ginkel, rookie Raekwon Davis, Christian Wilkins, Nik Needham and a guy who leads the Dolphins in sacks, Emmanuel Ogbah. Hope Ogbah can be the first Dolphins defender since Cam Wake to have double digit sacks with a great game against the Bills. We need to take Josh Allen down! Hopefully Shaq Lawson can make it for this game, although AVG certainly made his presence felt.

In summation, I think it’s important to have the right perspective. The Dolphins are a team on the rise, no question about it. We have built a team so quickly it’s shocking. We are set up to have another strong draft and a top 5 draft pick which currently stands at #3. Once again we have TWO 1st RD picks and TWO 2nd RD picks, most likely 4 in the top 60. We also have a fair amount of cap space ($32M) as well to fill in Free Agency. The future looks so much brighter than we could have imagined. I didn’t expect us to be at 10-5 going into the last week of the NFL season. I didn’t expect our team to be this good, this fast. Whatever happens this weekend, the future is bright my friends, enjoy it!

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Happy New Year!!

I also agree with what Mike is saying. I look at the perennial playoff teams and one thing they don’t do is waste early picks on a backup QB or on multiple QBs in a short timeframe. They build their lines and add to their talent in other areas so that Brady, Ben, Mahomes, Rodgers, Brees, ect, etc. van win. Only one QB plays most of the time and it’s really irresponsible to the team, fans, and ownership not to provide the tools needed to win.

  2. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Irresponsible like the last 20+ years. If Lawrence was there i would take him. Not sure anyone else in the draft would compare. So there”s that.

  3. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

It was a flash thought that we might have the number 3 pick in the draft. What if?

The chance may not come again soon and you take bpa. What if Lawrence dropped to two?

Irresponsible like the last 20+ years. If Lawrence was there i would take him. Not sure anyone else in the draft would compare. So there”s that…

It was a flash thought that we might have the number 3 pick in the draft. What if?
    ———————-
That would be one heck of a predicament, Krishna.

I’m not going to take any sides on this potential issue, but that would be one HUGE decision to make as a GM… and it could fracture the team and it’s fanbase (temporarily, of course).

For what it’s worth, I HEAR you. I mean, we can’t go wrong between Tua AND Lawrence, so as to have them battle it out. Loser would be traded for a potential day 1 pick at best, day 2 pick at worst.

For the sake of conversation, I hope Tua KILLS it on Sunday and we don’t need to worry about it.

  8. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Krishna,

If we were #1, then that’s different situation. Lawrence isn’t dropping and no one else is close to his talent.

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

This is the context with which I made my comments as well. Lawrence already gone.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Agreed in general. That is, unless a revelation about Lawrence drops his stock in the Draft.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And it’s crazy, because that type of thing seems to be increasing each and every year. Social media has really contributed to this type of occurrence.

  11. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Ryan Fitzpatrick is a 2021 FA who made $8 mil in 2020. Is also 38. Would like to keep him…. but not a definite and comes at a cost.

  12. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

10 years ago, some of us would hope that a revelation about a player would come out, tanking their stock in order for US to draft them. Then, it became about hoping a player would do something stupid (like punching a sign: Bruce Irvin) to tank their stock.

Now? They dig through social media. And social media is finally old enough where somebody like Trevor Lawrence may have said something stupid/racist/sexist when he was merely 12 years old (or just slightly older)… and the media will RUN with it!

    This world is crazy, y’all.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We picked up Tunsil on the cheap cause of the grass mask and then made one of the best trades in franchise history for him on the way out. Maybe social media lightening strikes twice. 🙂

Four Dolphins players will be questionable for Sunday’s game in Buffalo: WR DeVante Parker, WR Jakeem Grant, DE Shaq Lawson and G Solomon Kindley.

The Buffalo Bills will be without wide receiver Cole Beasley and tight end Reggie Gilliam, they are both out.

  14. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

That wouldn’t be a bad offseason!

  15. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

That hurdle Najee did in the first half was just sick!!!!!!!

DeVonta Smith is not just fast, he has this instant acceleration that is just sneaky.

Draft both in 1st round and don’t look back. I don’t care if we don’t even trade down from #3.

  16. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I like Najee and his hurdle was sick

No one in college can cover Smith. NFL CBs can.

  17. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Loved X…you don’t have 4.3 speed on me!

  18. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

This is freakish! 6’2 230 pounds and the defender isn’t even coming in low. SMH

I guess they need to make up a new statement for a play like that. Instead of “You got Mossed”, you call this “You got Teabagged”!

  19. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

These announcers are really slobbing Trevor Lawrence’s nob. Therefore, I predict OSU wins.

  20. days64's avatar days64 says:

Sighs… Been kinda crazy here the last few days, just found out Fitz is out with covid… I guess, this will take away Linus’ blanket and we all shall see if… It is Tua be, or not Tua be!!!

No matter what, this year has been a hell of a ride. Would not have missed it for the world.

    Fuck em up Fins!

  21. New Age's avatar New Age says:

So far, OSU looks like the better overall team. Great game compared to the Bama one. I still like the tools Jones has to work with this year compared to Lawrence. Give me Smith and Harris as well.

  22. D's avatar D says:

We don’t want Sarkisian. Those players yeah, but Dark was awful in Atlanta at the NFL level and crawled his way back to Alabama.

    • D's avatar D says:

I’d rather have Malzahn than Sark if we want to bring up a college coach. Sark wasn’t the OC Tua did the best under if you are thinking about the connection between the two. 2018 was his best year and Michael Locksley was the OC then. In fact he had a different OC each year he was at Alabama. Muffin, Locksley and Sark.

  23. D's avatar D says:

I can’t see Fitz who looks to finally be really enjoying himself not to want to stay on as a backup. I think he knows trying to reboot a career at this age is silly and that he has a lot going on here with this team that is possible he could be part of something really special next season. I’m not worried if he wants to retire though, if that’s the case though we need to be all over seeing if he will stay on as a coach.

  24. D's avatar D says:

I said it a while back, Najee is the RB I want, has been will be until either we select him or someone else does. As far as receivers goes I have some favorites but I’m not as set on which we select I’d just like one or two of them and I’d way rather use a top 10 pick on Pitts than a WR. If we selected Pitts then Harris and then Toney, I’m not crying over missing out on Smith. Trade back from 3 to 8 or so and pick up a first and we might could get all of them including Smith or Waddle

  25. D's avatar D says:

8mil is what a backup with starting ability costs. If we could resign him for anything under 10 I’d be all for it

  26. D's avatar D says:

“only 3 more weeks of mismanagement and dishonesty left”

I about puked when I read that lol. Dude you are going to be disappointed as fuck but nothing is changing but the name on the viagra bottle in the white house medicine cabinet.

GONNA WAIT until I see an up to date weather forecast for Buffalo tomorrow. If that storm front has already moved through Buffalo before kickoff, I will like our chances even more than I do now.
ONE factor that plays in Miami’s favor is the two extra days off they had to prepare for this game.
GIVES Coach Flores more time to drill Tua and his O-Line in the fine details of the game plan.
Plus it gives “FLO” more time for TRICK PLAYS they may spring during the game.
    —————————-
LOGIC says the Dolphins should not win this game. But logic also said this team would NOT be going for their 11th win of the season on the final weekend of play!!!
    —————————
I SAY THE DOLPHINS ARE THIS YEAR’s team of destiny. HOW ELSE do you explain the mind-boggling ending to the Raiduhs game??? Y’all have a good night’s sleep. I will have my prediction for this game before kickoff on Sunday.– GOO-O-O-O FINS!!!

  32. Dolphins Bills game is on CBS for South FL fans, and for everyone else, crackstreams

sometimes i have the game on crackstreams, AND CBS, because CBS has a 25 second delay, crackstreams shows the games LIVE , no delay

  33. Buffalo weather predictions for Sunday, High of 36F, Snow with mixed sleet, wind 7 MPH from the SE, 1 Inch of precipitation for the afternoon

  34. Fitz being out is good for Tua, He wont be concerned if he misses a pass or two he gets pulled, and he will also understand the game is his to win or lose, and his alone, extra motivation for Tua to summon the Samoan warrior spirits up and make magic happen for the Fins to go cruising into the playoffs with 11 wins!

  35. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I guess what i got out of this year’s CFP playoffs is that ND and Clemson could beat each other, but not a top team out of their own conference. lol….

ND had no business being in the CFP. We got to see them get whooped two weekends in a row. Fine playoff matching….lol.

  36. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

The thing about Lawrence, he’s only a junior.

  37. my prediction that BTC would Hit 30 K by the time Tua takes the field is coming very close, lol

i see this as a good omen, and think Tua will lead the team to the dub in the snow!

  38. there it went, wow, $30,444 now blew the doors off 30K

this means Dolphins win today !

  39. $31K wow, i made $4400 in the last hour, lol and i dont even have a job

this is incredible, but was predicted when BTC was $4500

  40. how much have the fins improved on defense in one year?

Points scored against, the fins were last, 32 in 2019
this year, the Fins are number 1

WORST TO FIRST in only one season, Flores name should already be on the coach of the year trophy, no other coach made this kind of difference

  41. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

D, isn’t Toney primarily a slot WR? I don’t see how we could get three 1st round picks unless we traded someone like X if he were wanting to hold out. Only teams with 2 first round picks are Jags and Jets who will be picking 1 and 2.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t think Toney is a first rounder if that’s what you mean

He’s one of my favorites too
I don’t know if he’s a slot receiver, he kind of reminds me of some one like Percy Harvin

  42. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

IMO, two players who hurt their draft stock the most this weekend were:
    QB Kyle Trask, FL
    CB Shaun Wade, Ohio State

Two players who helped their stock the most were:
    RB Trey Sermon, Ohio State
    DT Christian Barmore, Alabama

D, you may disagree on Barmore but many draft boards had him sliding a bit and had him as DT2 or even DT3 and a late 2nd round pick. I think he solidified himself as DT1 but, in this draft, DT1 may not get drafted until bottom of 1st or top of second.

I could actually see KC drafting him to shore up their run defense.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Also, I just read Trask did not play the second half. Mullen stated a of new players got some experience with 19 Florida players not showing up for the game. Can’t imagine Trask’s draft stock was affected one bit.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I think Fields has solidified himself as #2. The improvement between last year’s game and this one was very noticeable. Clemson destroyed Notre Dame their last game and didn’t have too many close games this year. Fields and OSU destroyed them. They didn’t look like they belonged and last person to do that was Burrow.

Sermon was a stud but he’s been in 3 different programs. That worries me a bit. How coachable is he?

  43. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

My only thought about Trask is that he lost all his weapons. It makes a difference.

Food for thought about getting Tua some weapons Tua use.

  44. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

At this point Miami could replace all their WR and I wouldn’t care. Najee would make a good Addition to the RB room as would Etienne. Get some playmakers.

  45. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Agree on the WRs and Najee. Not sure about Etienne.

  46. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Hell, we had a game with 4 (I think) rookies starting on the OL this year. I think we can handle 3 or 4 more rookies at WR and RB next year.

  47. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I think i made comments before the draft this year that Grier (with all his draft capital) needed to find 4-5 starters or find another job. IMO, he did his job this year.

Ready for him to do it again in 2021! The expectation is the same. Lol….

  48. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    • D's avatar D says:

Dunno how well he will do as a HC but I’m not as big on him as some others are. Just don’t think he is all that great. Saban runs everything at Alabama. He is more of a defensive guru, but just like Belichick, he sets it all up and just has his coordinators execute.

    —————————————
I think I mentioned it before, it think a lot of those old terms are pretty obsolete these days. I’d call him a possession receiver, one that is more a quick him and let him do the rest guy. Still he can fill what use to be called the flanker position or WR2. He has the speed to take the top off if he is played in press because he is really good at getting the advantage over the CB in press, so viable for WR1 in some situations.

I wasn’t thinking him for a first round pick, I was thinking trade back take Pitts, take the pick we get for trading back to grab Smith or Waddle and clean up the first with Harris. Swing back around in the second to take Toney, then look for Dickerson or a top OC with the second second.

    • D's avatar D says:

In college they designate players like Toney and Harbin as ATL because you just put them wherever and get the ball to them. Harbin was incredible that way and if not for health issues would have been amazing in the NFL

  51. D's avatar D says:

I don’t think Trask hurt himself much, I mean as far as leadership goes, he showed up and he played minus top three receivers. I think that game is an outlier he has almost two full seasons of great games I think that one won’t sink his stock.

  52. D's avatar D says:

I hope the jets take Fields. I’m telling you, plenty of amazing college QBs at OSU and not a single one have planned out.

  53. D's avatar D says:

BBM, I think Barmore is for certain a DT 1, and a first round pick, but maybe he has slipped a little to later in the first than he was earlier on. I’ll take it if that’s the case because I think there is potential for a really special player.

  54. D's avatar D says:

What I like about Toney and something we are missing right now is guys who can create separation out of their breaks. Toney can do that. Smith can do that. Waddle really can do that too, people who don’t watch the Alabama games think he is just a burner, but he runs pretty good routes on top of that.

I’ve also been watching the defensive stats weekly, and I really want to go from worst to first in defensive ppg. I haven’t looked it up, but I bet that has never been accomplished.

We have a 6 point lead on the Steelers, a 7 point lead on the Rams, and an 18 point lead on the Ravens.

I didn’t read the article you posted bc I do t have a subscription, but the headline doesn’t exactly sound like groundbreaking stuff….lol

Here’s some good news. Everyone agrees that everyone disagrees😁

I’m serious. Bloomberg actually wrote about this and highlighted that fact a couple of years ago
    Which is depressing

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-05-22/rural-and-urban-america-aren-t-so-different-after-all

Months ago, I saw a much better argument suggesting that their wasn’t a great as an impasse between urban and rural areas as we may perceive bc of political maps

The argument Bloomberg makes here is kind of weak
I’ll see if I can find it, it was a pretty good argument

  76. one thing has changed big time is people arent as social since Covid came into play, the article says neighbors dont talk to each other, but nobody ever heard of coronavirus several years ago , maybe its even worse now, but because of covid

people are not out and about like we used to be, no more fests for example, little to no fans at the games, and many more changes
2020 is the worst year i have ever seen by far, SO glad that sucker is GONE

I haven’t been this hyped-up for a Phins game in a LONG time!

Back in week 2 when we last played the Bills, we lost by a mere field goal… but they also were without starting LBs Tremaine Edmunds and Matt Milano.

IF we can utilize the run to open up the passing game, Tua’s going to have a lot more success, IMO. Weather is going to be a factor. Our Defense is ready to BURY these Bills, and I hope we see a lot of different fronts, especially lots of 0-COV.

Contain Josh Allen’s QB runs (keep a spy on him), and we’re in it until the end.

    M13: Phins 31, Bills 30

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

If they are playing their starters, I also think this game will hinge on our ability to run the ball.

Take some pressure of of Tua, get a few long drives to cut down some possessions, get a turnover or two, stay close, have the ball last, and win the game.

DAVIE, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins’ offense was teetering and playoff dreams were starting to slip away. After three straight three-and-outs with rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, coach Brian Flores made the eye-opening, fourth-quarter call to his bullpen. Veteran QB Ryan Fitzpatrick was being called in to save the game — and he did it in a miraculous way — with Flores later describing FitzMagic as his “ninth-inning reliever.”

It was a decision few NFL head coaches would have the guts to make — yanking a rookie franchise QB for a 16-year journeyman with the playoffs on the line. The NFL isn’t baseball and two-quarterback systems have rarely worked in the modern era (since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger).

    Resurgent Dolphins’ Defense

Where Miami’s defense has ranked in the NFL over the past two seasons in three key categories:

    2019 2020
    Points 32 1st
    Third-down conv 24th 1st
    Takeaways T-28t T-1st
    Source: ESPN
But Flores is proving he isn’t like many coaches. He knows his team, and his brutally honest style gives him the base to make these potentially volatile decisions without worry of it negatively impacting either quarterback or the locker room.

“With our whole quarterback situation, I think Flo does a good job in communicating with me, Fitz, as well as our coordinator and our quarterbacks coach, and kind of seeing, ‘Hey, are you in a groove?’ Or ‘What can we do better?’ And if not — it’s always communicated,” said Tagovailoa, who has been benched twice in the fourth quarter of a game, but remains the Dolphins’ starter with strong support from Flores. “There’s really good communication between all of us. I trust that he has the best interests of not just us, but the whole team.”

Beyond his handling of the NFL’s most unorthodox QB situation this season, Flores has made the Dolphins a winner sooner than expected. The 39-year-old coach undertook a massive rebuild when he was hired in February 2019. But after going 5-11 in 2019, including winning five of his last nine games, Flores has flipped the 2020 Dolphins to 10-5. A win against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday (1 p.m. ET, CBS) sends Miami to the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
Flores is never one to champion individual awards, but he should be the 2020 NFL Coach of the Year (the preseason odds on Flores to win the award were at 20-1, 11th best per William Hill Sports Book). There are many other worthy candidates — Buffalo’s Sean McDermott, Cleveland’s Kevin Stefanski, Pittsburgh’s Mike Tomlin, Kansas City’s Andy Reid, Green Bay’s Matt LaFleur — but none of them has exceeded Flores’ work in managing, developing and leading a turnaround season.

      Kylin Hill, Mississippi State

but this draft fell that way

I was looking at Carter and Gainerll but ended up taking Boyd, after Harris and Eitiene I don’t really have anything set into who the next RBs off the board should be

OL early again eh? Jackson and Hunt not good enough as rookies? Kindley is a guard with promise as well. We’re too fuckin impatient.

What’s the point in drafting young players high in the draft after one year then turning your back on them?

I do not think OL should be the pick at #3-9. We need playmakers on both sides of the ball.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

      Agreed.
Unless the staff you trust knows it isnt good enough. But for me, I want to see year 2 of this group of OL. They are going to bring in more next year anyway. They desperately need WRs with talent. Talent that fits Tua….its not here. Dont waste high pick on OL.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The point is the BPA. Sewell might be the top player in the draft. He can play RT for us. Hunt can move back inside and eventually either Hunt or Kindley will replace Flowers. Eventually our 3 rookies on the OL will be starting.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yes! It is just for me regardless with this draft stuff. It is different now, though. Before, I seemed to do mock drafts frantically to fill major needs almost to the point of desperation. With what this front office staff has done churning the bottom of the roster and finding puzzle pieces that fit up and down the roster instead of trying to put round pegs in square holes makes this whole draft thing easier to a certain degree. This front office has put us in position with a roster and draft extra draft picks where we can afford a luxury pick or two this next draft.
