Dolphins embarrassed in Week 17 must win playoff scenario, 56-26

Josh Allen is laughing . . . ALL OF BUFFALO IS LAUGHING . . . Today, the Buffalo Bills swaggered their way to a thoroughly demoralizing win over the upstart Miami Dolphins. The Bills basically planned to win this game with their starters or without them, that’s how you go into a game. It became more than that, much more than that. The Bills with Matt Barkley in at QB could have ran out the clock on offense up 35-13 in the 3rd QTR but instead, HC Sean McDermott decided to rub our noses in it and continued to attack through the air, all the way into the 4th QTR. Matt Barkley threw 13 times in the 2nd half, and not just dinks and dunks, but throwing downfield. All the way into the 4th QTR, the Bills were still throwing as Barkley threw a 56 yard bomb downfield for a TD. What purpose is this other than a show of dominance?

It’s one game, that’s all it is, but when I think back to the games in other seasons where we needed a win to stay in the playoff race, this is all too familiar. No way did I expect Brian Flores’s 2020 Miami Dolphins to get abused like this. I didn’t see it coming. I don’t have the desire to give you people past examples of Dolphins failures to show up in games like this but trust me, if you seek them they’re there, and this was no different. Different HC, different players, but same result. All the good things we did this season seemed to evaporate in one week.

The questions that require answers going forward is do we have a potential quality starter at QB in Tua Tagovailoa? How many WR’s are we allowed to draft in one draft class? If the Colts somehow fall to the Jacksonville Jaguars today can we really fly back to Buffalo next week? I’m going to imagine the Bills would open up as 2 TD favorites. I think the action would be extremely heavy on the Buffalo side pushing the spread closer to 3 TD’s.

If I can step back for a moment with calmer typing fingers (I can’t!!!), I can look at the rest of the 15 games we played and feel proud. Today just bitch-slapped that right out of my body. There will be no fond feelings about this season, and now I really have legitimate concerns that we might not have a QB. That hurts the most, although we are in a position to remedy that if we so choose. On the other hand, I just can’t imagine that happening and more than likely we will try and build around Tua, and to be fair, it still might be the right move. I’m just waaaay less unsure about that at the moment. I think about last week when the Browns played the Jets and Baker Mayfield didn’t have his top 3 WR’s due to COVID-19 and threw the ball 53 times and couldn’t find the endzone once, against the Jets no less. It wasn’t ideal for Tua to have to lean on a gimpy DeVante Parker, Lynn Bowden Jr. Malcolm Perry and twice cut Isaiah Ford.

So what happened to our once dominant defense, the #1 scoring defense in the NFL? I don’t have to tell you that stat went right the fuck out the window today, comically so, to the point we will likely be mid pack now, not quite #28 as I had joked earlier. Hey, all the games count, this one counted just as much as any other, if only we felt that way as a team and did something about it. I don’t have to explain, this article is cathartic, I’m releasing all the negativity with every keystroke. I’m still not rooting for the Jags though, I don’t know if I could take another week of football like this one back to back.

GO DOLPHINS 2021!!!

Great title, Mike. I didn’t bother reading the article, because I have no desire to relive that putrid turd of a game in any way shape or form.

  2. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, I didn’t bother reading your article just yet because we all just watched it. So here’s my much shorter summary. LOL

Our offense does need a lot of work. I’ve said all year the defense and ST’s was way ahead of the offense for obvious reasons. That said, all phases let us down today. The bottom line is the Bills are really good. The last game they lost in their last 11 was that Murray/Hopkins Hail Mary play. The Bills are for real.

Wife of my favorite NFL QB right now at this time on this day (put it last screen…. but you get the idea).

  4. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think the distorted Josh Allen pic is fitting for the article. He’s bigger than life with his #1, which clearly means we’re #2, literally and figuratively

  5. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Mike E : what I meant with PPR scoring is are all happy with Full point per reception, or would .5 per reception be better .. still rewards but not as heavy ,, open to thoughts

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’d keep it at one point per reception. That’s my vote. I think every league is trending in that direction.

  6. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Jags are not going to win, but I will always pull for getting into the playoffs, if not just for experience.

The Bills showed little class today, I hope we remember and pay them back, with class of course LOL.

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

How many drops did we have today? 9, 10, 15? Ford had 4 alone.

  8. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Ending this season the way it did , leaves a worse taste in our mouths than it should .. beginning of year we had no hope to be in the position of win and in in week 17… being in that position and completely shitting the bed hurts worse than just not quite being there… we made great strides I. This one season whether it be phase 1 or phase 12 .. and yes it sux that we still aren’t sure if we did the right thing in drafting Tua.. but we also cannot afford to give up on him yet .. contingency plan should be made, but hope we don’t need/ decide we need to use/waste a top tier pick at Qb

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Reminds me of the playoff games we have hit in the past were we got blown out. Still a nice season though. We just aren’t there yet… but no one thought we would be. And yeah we’ll be talking QB the whole off season.

I think the ass whooping is exactly what we needed going into the offseason!

Nobody is going to be comfortable with anything!

Everybody will be evaluated for upgrades!

Everyone will be motivated during the offseason!

  11. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m still furious. Tomorrow I have no doubt I’ll be able to enjoy what we accomplished this season, but today, right now, I want to be angry, and I will be. We stunk. We came up small in ALL THREE PHASES in our biggest game of the year. I think we have serious questions about Tua. Chan Gailey needs to be replaced. We need receivers.

Right now, I just want to salvage something and get a Titans win.

And the Titans score to go up 17-6.

  12. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Go back to what Randy always talks about. Our roster isn’t there yet for top level play. This team played it’s ass off all year, but they’re not there yet. We have a lot of young all over the field. Phase III is coming. 🙂

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – Wow, you don’t think they rubbed our nose in some shit today? They could have just run the game out, they were taking deep shots on 1st down late in the 4th QTR. That’s not usually how it’s done. It’s all good though, they have definitely left that door open for some payback at some point.

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

LOL @ Kong – Thanks for humoring me

  15. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I agree with Tim. Who cares if they were still throwing with 9 minutes left in the game? I don’t see that as running up the score. If they are up 30 and throwing bombs with 1:39 left, maybe that is different, but with most of a quarter left, I’m ok with a team playing their game.

I genuinely mean no offense to anyone that feels different, but to me expecting another team to stop running their offense with that much time left, I just see that as whining.

  16. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

No point in being upset the Bills beat us by the margin they did. Not their job to make us feel better about the loss. They did their job today, we didn’t.

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – 49-19 with 6:27 remaining on first down a 56 yard bomb isn’t running up the score? OK, I’ll have to strenuously object to that! lol

Boy Tim, I have to disagree. If they were so worried about us coming back, then why pull their starters? They kept on throwing deep even up 30 with their second string in….classless and BS

Gotta disagree. They gave players game experience, they’re in the playoffs, never know when they will need someone to come in and the more true game experience they have the better for them. Sucks to be on our side of it but they did what they should do. Hopefully our players remember how this felt and kick their ass up and down the field next year. 😁

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Yes, I hope they use it as a learning experience. I am not really whining about it, I just disagree about it not being classless. If you are up 30 in the 4th quarter, AND have basically called off the dogs by putting in reserves, I think throwing it deep on first down is BS…JMO

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Put your big boy pants on and why are you letting pea-size Barkley throwing bombs on you? Are you tired?

  21. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Guys, I don’t care about your emotions. The Bills buried us today and made sure they were the #2 seed, with backups playing the 2nd half. Accept it and move on. I’m not the only one who feels this way. Have a look.

We have some payback for them next year, or maybe next week. LOL

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

My feelings aren’t hurt at all, and the players are professionals and will suck it up. All I am saying is IMO the Bills were classless in their play calling, and we sucked in not preventing success. I still hate the Bills for it though..LOL

  22. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Let’s put it this way, I hope the Dolphins remember this game for a long time, and it burns like hell all off season so next time we face them, we remember to pay it back. That’s all I ask

  23. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

We’re supposed to be one of the top defenses. If another team has their backups in and are throwing deep, we should see that as them doing us a favor and giving us more opportunity. Looking at it like they were disrespectful is completely the wrong mindset IMO.

With half a quarter left if we sell out against the run on every play and are giving them big mismatches on pas plays, the other team is supposed to just play into what we want them to do and just run the ball? They aren’t allowed to pass with that much time left? I honestly don’t get it. Our defense should not get beaten like a drum by fucking backups. That is what we should be taking from the way that game played out.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      ^ Emotions are running wild.

I watched this game with a friend of mine today and we never thought they were running up the score other than just playing the game. It didn’t come up one time. He’s a Giants fan who was anxious late in the game against Dallas, and we both knew the Dolphins got outmatched and outplayed. The final score doesn’t matter. They kicked our ass!

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m on the other end of the emotional spectrum than you right now, but we’re on the same page with the way the game played out. The Bills were just playing their game.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s one way of looking at it. I have a very different perspective. Usually the team that’s up is trying to run time off the clock to get home with the victory, incompletions stop the clock, so you just try to run the game out. I see that all the time in the NFL. I think it was a show of dominance and out of the ordinary, and yes, I’m bothered that our proud defense took it in the ass and were Buffalo’s bitch today too. My ire ranges much farther than the Bills, I’m angry with our team most of all.

  24. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s an aggressive step on their throats mindset. I actually respect it. The Pets have been doing it for years. I want our team to do that. How many games this year did we destroy a team in the first half, then played a very conservative 2nd half, and we end up winning a relatively tight game by one score? I want a team that steps on throats like the Bills did today.

    What if:
Dolphins brass falls in love with many Alabama playmakers and goes crazy.
The draft falls so we have Smith, Harris and Waddle, we trade back into the first to get to the third player of the trifecta but in doing so we keep pick 35. So we have the three and our pick comes up at 35 and who but Mac Jones is sitting there 🤷‍♂️
    Do you take him?
    I would

  26. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

The 2nd string offense took what supposedly one of the top defenses gave it. I don’t fault them at all. You don’t want to get embarrassed….then just stop them. Their practice squad RB looked better than anything on our entire roster. Their WRs were wide open all day and ours haven’t been all year.

  27. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Currently R1P3 and R1P18…….not a bad start to begin upgrading

  28. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Kong – What can screw up us getting the #3 pick right now?

  29. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

We get a better 2nd first round pick! Lol…

  30. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

At the end of the day, the Dolphins lost. I don’t care if it’s 56-26 or 20-19. The result is the same. We didn’t keep it close. They kicked our ass.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Again, we disagree. If we at least fucking showed up today, the loss to me is so much more palatable. Of course the end result is the same but that’s far too an absolute way to look at it. We didn’t compete, and now I also think we have a legit QB quandary. If we lose 31-28 and Tua throws 3 TD’s I’m much happier right now, despite losing and being out of the playoffs. That’s just me.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not sure what you’re disagreeing with? Your first sentence was “If we at least fucking showed up today”. We didn’t. What’s the issue. Do I have to say we got our asses kicked in some other way? I’m not following you.

  31. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

No matter where we come down in regards to our feeling about the Bills scoring late, we hopefully can all agree we want our team to have the same bad taste in their mouths that we do. Use it as motivation, get better, strive to be as good as the Bills are right now.

The major impetus for the ’72 Dolphins perfect run was the whooping they took in the SuperBowl to the Cowboys.

I wonder if the team was ever sold on Tua. They trusted Flores. When, Fitz wasn’t there, seems whole team went down. Is that possible?

    • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

I was thinking not that they aren’t sold on Tua, but the fact that Fitz wasn’t there was a factor. I had been thinking he was Tua’s safety net but it seems like he was that for the whole team.

Tim – I think Parker is so very rarely right physically. His story is he’s always hampered by minor injuries. If you’re a WR and your hamstring is injured, hard to really be a sprinter, you’re most likely trying as hard as you can to keep it at less than full speed

  75. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Well, at least one game went our way. It would have been nice to make the playoffs, but for our future, the difference between 8 and 3 may end up being really impactful.

  76. New Age's avatar New Age says:

I’m hoping for Najee and similar games to what Jonathan Taylor just did to the Jags.

  77. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

WONDERING IF the Dolphins will play the “We’re REALLY looking for a QB” card and then trade the 3rd pick for a King’s ransom??
IF NOT, then let’s get us the probable Heisman winning wide receiver from ALABAMA!!!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Nope! Tua is the 2020 #5 QB investment. How quickly everyone moves on. How about 10+ drops today? Right in their fuckin hands!

We’re a young offense lacking firepower. We’ve started 3 rookies on the OL all year. Oh right, forgot about that. RB and WR? Patience folks. 🙂

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I’m looking at who really needs a QB. Atl, maybe Det, Car, probably Minn, Indy, Wash, and I wouldn’t go further down. I’d honestly not go further than 9 unless it was an unbelievable package and who has the picks for that? Let Carolina or Detroit trade for next year’s 1st and this year’s 2nd if they would even be willing to.

  78. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Dolphins rounds 1 and 2.

    #3, #18, #36, #50.

Today sucks! Maybe tomorrow too. Then we realize the jump we made from 5-11 to 10-6.

The Miami wave is coming in 2021. 🙂

  80. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tannehill is the perfect example of surrounding a QB with better talent and seeing his play improve to the level of the talent he has around him. In other words, maybe we should build around Tua and see how much better he can be.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Nah… Tua already sucks. LOL

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Get Tua Devonta and he instantly throws better. Get a mauler like Najee or Sermon to make his job easier. We really need at least 2 WRs in this draft. The guys we have either suck or aren’t available enough.

I’m sorry, I think the 1st paragraph is insane. You’re saying is Tua is seeing an open receiver but doesn’t feel he can get the ball there because the ball starting point is too low.

I think Brees is an excellent comparison. He physically reminds me of Brees. Look at Brees’ first 3 seasons, he was very mediocre. I think you’d probably have written Brees off too early.

    LMAO!

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yep, I’m angry. That’s all that last statement was.

And that argument was entirely about Tua’s throwing mechanics. Have you shown that Tua has bad throwing mechanics? When I asked if you could show anyone else other than you that says Tua has bad mechanics, did you respond? Nope, all you can do is pull a statement where I disagreed that his issues are throwing mechanics and use it in douchey way that is completely out of context.

I’ve said multiple times I’m not sold on Tua. You’re a moron, lol.

  82. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

So you get your feelings hurt and leave, then come back when you feel vindicated? Nice.

  83. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

ACTUALLY,TIM, I WANT Miami to stick with Tua and draft Tua’s fellow BAMA alum at wide receiver.
This year’s version of Tua is well ahead of where Elway and Josh Allen were at the end of their rookie seasons. Your appeal to patience, no doubt, will fall on several deaf and dumb ears, at least two of which are in our audience.

ANOTHER QUANTUM LEAP OF IMPROVEMENT under FLO’s direction, will put this franchise in the chase for next season’s Super Bowl.

    The future looks rosy, indeed!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Smith or Waddle? What about Harris at RB? Some want us to go OL and solidify that. We’re going to have lots of options at #3 and on. Wow did Houston fuck themselves. LOL

  84. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

After one year of play I feel WAY better about Tua then I did about Tannehill after his first year.

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

RHINO; AFTER TWO YEARS of “FLO,” I feel WAY better about him then I did about ANY prior head coach hired by Steve Ross.

  85. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Jets at #2 will really set the tone for whether there will be any movement to acquire our #3 pick. If they take Fields I think offers will be quiet. However, if they decide to stick with Darnold and take, say, Sewell, THEN the QB hungry teams may start making offers. Fields game vs Clemson really escalated his value.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I’ve heard Wilson has skyrocketed up some boards after their season. The one way I see us getting to move back is if a team thinks Atlanta is moving on from Ryan. He’ll be 36 so there’s a chance especially with new leadership in Atlanta.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They know we’re not taking Fields or any other QB.

We just sit there at #3 and take the best player on ‘OUR’ board. This is a gift pick.

  86. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Tua played his typical game as far as i could tell. He has an entire off season to work on his craft. He needs to.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Tua’s mannerisms tell me he’s not satisfied at all. I like that. He’s a rookie QB. I’m still psyched about his future.

The offense is in the phase that is going through the most extreme turnover. This year players earned their way in and out. Now it’s time to add playmakers to that.

      Sorry Mike E., it’s Phase III. 😉

  87. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Washington vs Philly is our final regular season game.
    Good job NFL, lmao.

  88. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    Cav,
the reason i didn’t respond to the Brees nonsense is because that’s what it is, nonsense,

you cherry pick a great QB who might have had trouble early but there’s no comparison between the two.
anyone can look back thru the nfl past and cherry pick a situation that has a cindarella outcome but it isn’t realistic.
i just see Tua struggle and i wonder why he does?
going over the tape that’s the best scenario i could come up, IMO he just plays too small.

I really wanted Tua to succeed, I doubt that will happen.

Rob – That’s just ridiculous. Tua can wing it,

  92. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

They let Cox go now cause they didn’t need him for this game and they know we won’t need him when they draft Najee Harris. He comes packaged as an all-in-one deal.

  93. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

My lord, Rob, you need to use your spreadsheet of ‘responses’ better. They lack context, and clearly you can’t remember on your own.

That entire conversation, I was not arguing Tua is great or will be. I was not saying he’d be Brees. I was only disputing your assertion that Tua’s issues are because he has bad mechanics.

The only comparison I made to Brees was that Tua reminds me physically of Brees (i.e. throwing mechanics, size, arm strength), and the fact Brees didn’t light it up to start his career.

I also didn’t ask you to respond to any Brees comparison. What I asked at the time was is if there anyone else at any point of the evaluation process that says Tua has mechanical issues. You ignored that because his issues aren’t freaking mechanical and no one says they are except you.

If you want to try and ‘get back’ at people, at least make sure you know what the heck you are talking about when bringing up old shit. It’s fucking annoying that I have to reexplain the conversation because you can’t get it straight and you are so desperate to get a point you just throw shit out there.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i said i went back and looked at the tape to try to find why Tua is ineffective, and yes there are tapes showing deficiencies, i’ll have to see if i can find them
he does not have the same mechanics as Brees, he has a very low release compared to Brees who has a very high release.

no need to get upset over the matter

  94. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

TIM; To answer your question, the Bama WR I’d pick @#3 would be Smith.

  99. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Give it some time and many of you will realize that despite the beat down today the 2020 season was a huge success even down to today when we are guaranteed the #3 pick in the 2021 Draft and you can rest assure that Miami’s management will continue to build on what we have and with plenty of capital both draft picks and money!

It was the Bills’ year and they have worked very well in their rebuild and are a year or two ahead of us.
I have written on my site some facts about Tua’s rookie season vs Josh Allen’s rookie season that provides hope as we develop our rookie QB!

Just a few words of positivity we all could use after this beat down!
Now time for the rebuild to continue!!!!!
    Fins Up!!!!
