2020 Miami Dolphins Season Recap

I know it’s hard to push the last game of the season out of your minds, but if you just set it aside for a bit, you can appreciate what was accomplished by our team in a very promising rebuilding season. Like Tim has said many times, the NFL season is divided into quarters. We lost the 1st quarter of the season. We finished the 1st QTR of the season 1-3 winning only against the Jacksonville Jaguars and losing 2 division games, one to the Patriots and one to the Bills. We let a game get away from us against Seattle too. Not a good start. First Quarter / 1-3

The 2nd Quarter of the season is where we started to turn some heads. We blew out and dismantled the SF 49ers in their house. We pummeled Niners QB Jimmy Garopplo sacking him 5 times and turned them over 3 times for an impressive blowout 43-17 victory. 1-0. The Dolphins then cruised to an easy 24-0 win over the hapless Jets to start this quarter 2-0. The Dolphins schedule was affected by COVID-19 and thus forced us to take our BYE week 6 weeks earlier, so Week 5 it was, rather than Week 11. This schedule change ended up causing the Dolphins to make an earlier change at QB as the Tua Tagovailoa era in Miami began. In a game that really opened up the eyes of the talking heads, the Dolphins gave the LA Rams the same treatment they gave the Niners and made Jared Goff look bad. Whispers were happening that this Dolphins defense just might be for real. We turned over the Rams 4 times in an impressive win over the 5-2 Rams. So far, 3-0 this quarter. The Dolphins then faced their second 5-2 NFC team in a row in the Kyler Murray led Arizona Cardinals. It was a back and forth affair but for the first time, the Dolphins actually had to lean on their young QB and he came through to lead the Dolphins to a 4th quarter come from behind victory, 34-31. This is where we made our hay. Second Quarter/ 4-0 (5-3 overall)

The Dolphins began the 3rd quarter of the season against the 2-6 LA Chargers. This was to be the highly touted matchup of rookie QB’s Justin Herbert against Tua Tagovailoa. As it turned out, Tua had the better game by a slight margin as the Dolphins defense picked off Herbert once and sacked him twice. The Dolphins won 29-21. 1-0. The Dolphins then traveled to Mile High. The Broncos defense confused and abused QB Tua Tagovailoa and made Tua look like a rookie QB. Both RB’s Melvin Gordon ran for over 80 yards and the Dolphins for the first time brought in relief pitcher Ryan Fitzpatrick. Tua got banged up and there was no Fitzmagic this day as the Dolphins went to 6-4 losing 20-13. 1-1. A welcome relief in sight, the Dolphins traveled to NJ to play the Jets again in another relatively uncontested game. Ryan Fitzpatrick cruised the Dolphins to a 20-3 victory. 2-1. Tua returned from injury to face the Joe Burowless Bengals and the Dolphins defense picked off both Brandon Allen and Ryan Finley for a 19-7 victory. 3-1. Third Quarter / 3-1 (8-4 overall)

The Dolphins started the final quarter of the season hosting the AFC Beast Kansas City Chiefs and we sort of gave them a game, we played a lot of catchup after the Chiefs got to a 30-10 3rd quarter lead. Tua rallied the Dolphins for 17 4th QTR points but it was too little too late as the Dolphins fell 33-27. Valiant effort really, but a loss nonetheless. 0-1. The Dolphins then hosted the New England Patriots for a much needed rematch and the Dolphins were up to the task. Although we had a sluggish first half and were down 9-7, the Dolphins took control in the 2nd half outscoring the Patriots 15-3 for a well deserved win. 1-1. The Dolphins traveled to Sin City to the Las Vegas Raiders beautiful new home, Allegiant Stadium. The Dolphins offense featured Tua Tagovailoa dinking and dunking through 3 plus quarters completing 17-22 passes for just 94 yards and 1 TD. 9:47 mark of the 4th QTR HC Brian Flores pulled starting QB Tua Tagovailoa with the Dolphins trailing 16-13 and QB Ryan Fitzpatrick makes his 2nd relief appearance, his first not due to an injury. You all know the story, the Raiders went up 22-16 with just 0:19 seconds remaining which led to the Fitzmagic drive that will always be an image we can remember as his head was twisted to the point where he couldn’t see where the throw was going but was complete to WR Mack Hollins at the LV 41 yard line and then the 15 yard facemask penalty spotted the ball at the 26 yard line which set up the Jason Sanders game winning 44 yard FG. 2-1. Then the wheels went off the track against the division bully Buffalo Bills. The wounds are still fresh so I’ll spare you, we lost badly, an unfortunate embarrassing end to what was a very promising season. Fourth Quarter / 2-2. (10-6 overall)

So the Dolphins finished the season with a 10-6 record, 2nd in the AFC East. Even the most optimistic fans didn’t see this coming. I think the defense really surprised us, there were many things that despite the last game letdown, lead you to believe this team is not too far away from having a great defense. Like the great Dolphins defenses of the 1970’s, this is also a no name defense. CB Xavien Howard is likely the one player that casual NFL fans know, and maybe Kyle Van Noy because the Patriots were so visible. Our defense is young, really young, and guys that we drafted last year and this year are already cornerstones of that defense. DL Christian Wilkins drafted last year, DL Raekwon Davis drafted this year, LB Andrew Van Ginkle (last year) and to a lesser extent, DL Jason Strowbridge who was part of the rotation on the D-line. The guys we brought in in free agency solidified the defense. LB Kyle Van Noy was a great leader on the field, DE Emmanuel Ogbah had a very strong 3/4 of the season but faded out late in the season. OLB Shaq Lawson was also effective but less so than Ogbah. #55, Jerome Baker had his best season as a Miami Dolphin LB. If you give a good player better players around him, you will see his play rise with the talent around him.

This brings me to the offense. The one place where I believe all Dolphins fans should be thrilled about is the offensive line. This unit made great strides this season, comprised of mostly rookies. Rookie LT Austin Jackson started most of the year when he was healthy, and so did rookie OG’s Solomon Kindley and T/G Robert Hunt. Swingman Jesse Davis played every position but C on the O-line this season and is a keeper for his versatility and selflessness. Veteran C Ted Karras did a nice job this season but will be a free agent in 2021. Do we re-sign Karras, or Is Michael Deiter ready to man the C position, do we draft a center or do we go free agency again?

We need playmakers. We have a few guys that can be considered playmakers but one such player like DeVante Parker has once again proven he can’t be counted on for 16 games during the season. He played in parts of 14 games, but was hampered by injury and ineffective in a few. When he was healthy he was fantastic as always, but he still finished with a rather pedestrian season, 63 catches for 793 yards and 4 TD’s. Mike Gesicki is another one, and I wish I knew whether it was Gailey, Fitz or Tua or a combination of all 3 that sometimes just completely ignored him. Gesicki had a nice season with 53 catches for 703 yards and 6 TD’s but I think he can do so much more. I think he’s nearly as talented as LV TE Darren Waller who saw nearly DOUBLE the targets Gesicki got. We will be drafting WR’s in the 2021 NFL Draft, make no mistake. We need to build and give QB Tua Tagovailoa legitimate WR’s to throw to. At RB, I think Myles Gaskin is a really nice #2, like an Austin Ekeler type of player. He could be a #1 if necessary but I think we need more of a downhill runner who can push the pile and run more with more physicality. So often I saw both he and Salvon Ahmed downed by first contact.

The nice thing is the Laremy Tunsil trade has afforded us two more great picks in the 2021 NFL Draft, #3 in RD1 and #36 in RD2. We have 9 picks in all, two 1st RD picks, two 2nd RD picks and then 5 more distributed in the next 5 rounds. Building this offense is paramount to making Tua Tagovailoa a better QB. As I mentioned earlier with Jerome Baker, good players play better with better talent around them. He needs reliable receivers, a RB that can carry the load and pass block and stout OL, which I feel we’re well on our way with the O-line. Keep building that defense, AVG may be a star in the making and I really liked Elandon Roberts but I feel like he’s more of a 2 down player. A guy like Micah Parsons could really elevate this LB corps and the defense as a whole.

We have such a young nucleus on this team. I think we will add another nice veteran or two in free agency. Draft strong and just use free agency to fill in spots, not as a crutch. I think we have that formula down now. We have about $32M to spend but we’re not going to be big spenders anymore. We’re building, and I think we could be in the top 10 teams of 2021 and should be in the playoffs. In 2022, who knows? 1 year at a time, and for us Dolphins fans, 2020 was a good one!

GO DOLPHINS 2021!!!

Stanger, Deshaun has a no trade clause so he can kind of limit the bidding war, he’s only going to go where he feels like he can win. Jets and Jags both have a lot of picks and cap but Watson won’t go to either. Texans will have to negotiate with teams Watson will lift the no trade for. Watson doesn’t care what Houston gets for him.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Watson can say no to a bunch of teams, but ultimately he’d have to present a list of teams he’s OK going to. The auction would start. Houston does care what Houston gets and has a trade veto as well. Texans are rebuilding — they could take a combination of current players and present/future picks from pretty much any team. Bet you the Pats or Steelers would want him.

  3. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Love that we’re at the Senior Bowl – That’s makes the Texans trade even more of a fuckover! lol

  4. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

My guess is Deshaun Watson works things out with the Texans. He has ZERO leverage in this situation.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

He only has Le’veon Bell leverage. But in a weird way what Bell did might give him more. That and that it is not about money. Watson is an elite QB in the prime of his career. Can’t blame him for not wanting to waste 3 years of it on a rebuilding team.

  5. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Give credit to Watson to waiting until the seals was over to voice his objections to the Texans

That said – he’s probably better off sticking with them

Bill OBrien’s crazy trades are what set them back
He’s a good piece for that team to build around

Maybe the incoming regime can convince him to stick with the new program

  6. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“President Donald Trump is planning to award New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick the nation’s highest civilian honor. Belichick will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Thursday.” Wonder if Shula got it.

Scarlett is a powerfull runner. He be a nice add to the mix. LaMichael Perine and Scarlett platooned for a couple years, with Perine being the more jump cut kinda runner and Scarlett the more power back. Dunno how he will develop for us but this is a good signing.

  8. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Wow the Eagles fired Doug Pederson. I thought I heard they were sticking with him.

  9. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    This is just disgusting!

  10. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Gonna be a lot of unhappy jersey owners if we trade Tua.

“Tua Tagovailoa has already become one of the NFL’s most popular players. Tagovailoa was the third-highest-selling player and the top-selling rookie of official NFL merchandise “

    • D's avatar D says:

Im going to be pretty pissed sans jersey, because its a stupid move. Tua has a lot more to prove but damn, changing at that position year after a number 5 pick in one fo the worst years to kinda reboot yourself. I dont see the FO as that wishy washy, but if they are that will cause me more concern about our future than any other move.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Grier says Tua is our starter and we’re pleased with his development. So where is all of this coming from?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

In part it comes from the fact that if we are going to put #3 up for a bidding war we want it out that we might take a QB there. That could help the team. Smoke and mirrors time.

Grier says Tua is our starter and we’re pleased with his development. So where is all of this coming from?

From fans who don’t like Tua. This specific occurrence comes from the mock draft above.

I don’t like Tua myself, but IMO if they were to draft another QB at or around #3 this year I would be thinking about replacing the FO not the player. They already wasted a 2 & 5 on Rosen and to waste the #5 overall on another temp QB and admitting to it by taking a new guy would be enough evidence for me to think they don’t know what the hell they are doing and to start making noise for them to get replaced.

  14. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Now I think Fields may very well go at #3, but I am hoping it is to Detroit after a trade up from #7 or Minni at #14.

  15. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m a little bit surprised to read the Eagles fired Pederson 3 years after a Super Bowl win, but it is a ‘what have you done for me lately’ league.

  16. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Team Picks
    3: R1 P3 OT Penei Sewell – Oregon
    18: R1 P18 WR DeVonta Smith – Alabama
    35: R2 P3 S Trevon Moehrig – TCU
    50: R2 P18 C Creed Humphrey – Oklahoma
    81: R3 P17 RB Trey Sermon – Ohio State
    120: R4 P18 WR Damonte Coxie – Memphis
    196: R6 P17 EDGE Jordan Smith – UAB
    253: R7 P31 FB Ben Mason – Michigan

I just picked the next “BPA” when it was my pick on this one.

  17. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

And some have even been fired twice, lol

  18. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Team Picks
    3: R1 P3 WR Ja’Marr Chase – LSU
    18: R1 P18 LB Zaven Collins – Tulsa
    35: R2 P3 RB Najee Harris – Alabama
    50: R2 P18 C Creed Humphrey – Oklahoma
    81: R3 P17 EDGE Rashad Weaver – Pittsburgh
    120: R4 P18 DL Daviyon Nixon – Iowa
    196: R6 P17 OT Foster Sarrell – Stanford
    253: R7 P31 TE Tony Poljan – Virginia

I went a different direction with this one, but I still like it a lot.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’d flip Harris and Collins. Harris is going to be star RB. He’s like a TE as a receiver. LBs can’t cover him and most S’s are are not as big anymore.

  19. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Creed fell to me twice as BPA at #50 and I used two different big boards…..Coincidence? I am keeping an eye out for him from now on.

  20. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It’s la last like Ohio State has fresher legs or something….

  21. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I really don’t want to get into politics but for the good of the country Trump needs to go away. He’s not a uniter, he’s a divider. Trump supporters are like a cult to me. It’s not about being Republican or Conservative, it’s about him and that’s fucked up.

That said… anyone who doesn’t think that the far left isn’t trying to divide us and change the principles of this nation – you’re also part of a cult.

Why do you think 3rd party and term limits are even discussed? People don’t like the current establishment.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Clarity right up until you got to the mirror of your second paragraph. How do you think Trump and his cult were allowed to come to power.

The glorious GOP, conservative and Republicans allowed this to happen by ignoring his repulsive, racist policies. Qanon, proud boys, and neo-nazi dogma are hallmarks of conservative thinking over the last 4 years and to this HOUR Republicans in general are still enabling the lies.

Extemism is on all sides and somehow Repu licans are blind to the vampires in their mirrors. Too bad and typical holier than thou attitude from your ilk.

  22. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think we have a shootout in the NCAA Championship game.

  23. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Kong,

Pederson was in a Superbowl, then two straight years of playoffs. Whatever he said to the owner, he must have wanted to be fired. Not exactly a top destination for a new coach either. Yay Wentz!!

  24. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Smith is unbelievable. Guy is destroying the best teams in college.

  25. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

BBM’s boy Barmore is having a good game as well as Smith!

  26. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I want Smith I am okay taking him at 3

  27. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  28. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Mac Jones would have 125 yards and 1 TD if he hadn’t thrown to Smith this game. Najee and Smith have accounted for 326 of the 389 yards Bama has tonight and all 5 TDs. Let’s just get both in the first.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

      I like that plan

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I had some making me think about Chase before the Notre Dame game but no one’s stopped him this year. Smith has looked better than Chase did even with being a twig. Him and Najee` are the best 1-2 punch in college ball and hopefully we get both. I think Grier wants both tbh.

  29. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

Devonta Smith’s on pace to catch 430 yards in pass receptions and SIX TOUCHDOWNS!!!
I understand those who believe he’s too slight and frail looking. But they are WRONG!! In the famous words of Muhammad Ali, “Float like a butterfly; sting like a bee. Your hands can’t hit what your eyes can’t see!!”
    ——-
And speaking of “HIT,” did Bama out-hit the Buckeyes or what in the first half??? This, so far, has been one of the all-time ass-kickings for the ages!! The Little Ten looks like a girls’ league compared to the SEC this season. The entire Big 10 League will take a major hit, recruiting wise, if Ohio State gets crushed in the second half as they did in the first half. With programs like Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State and Nebraska now down in the dumps, this league just plain lacks top to bottom strength.
    ——-
Well, maybe the 2nd half will be more competitive. Y’all have a great evening and a better tomorrow.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Devonta Smith is a great WR. But his frame is an issue at the next level unless he’s just a special player where that doesn’t matter. Maybe that’s the case.

  32. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Tim

I know you are not a fan of his farm but DeVonta Smith really is looking like a special talent. I think there’s a strong possibility that he’s our pick at 3

Also, domes Najee Harris remind anyone else of a taller version of LaDainian Tomlinson. I feel like they have similar styles

  33. so bellicheat turned down an award from trumpnocchio, the deceitful fascist anti American pig

its not that surprising, the rats are jumping the ship chumptanic, they should have known trump was haht gahbage 6 years ago like most of America knew

    • this is the division that trump cultivated for 6 years with his daily lies and hate

once trump leaves the office in a week or less, America can move on and away from fascism, and work to make democracy strong enough to hold off the next would be despot,

his attempts to take over the country and end democracy have failed, and forevver marked his brand as toxic

who got fired by 81 million voters?

its trump. but he does have some help, he has some enablers for sure like Howley, Gohmert, Guliani, etc

    Mike E,

There will be no common ground because our ‘leaders’ like to see us divided. Then we don’t look at them destroying small business while the wealthy made records gains. We don’t look at stagnant wages or a huge number of Americans on lifelong welfare, or Latinos rushing the border to get in hoping for a better life while getting robbed by Big Business. We don’t look at China making all our PPE, medicine, TVs, everything while we sit in cubicles learning Critical Race Theory. We don’t look at how Americans of all colors and income are being divided and sold out by leadership of all colors who like Chinese money more than their pledge to aid their constituents.

We live in a corporate autocracy or as Mussolini first called it, a fascist state. The only thing that’s keeping us from completely getting there is that they haven’t outlawed peaceful assembly and guns YET. That’s the goal this term. We will see a lot of push about domestic terrorists and Covid already showed that the populace will follow any rules no matter how stupid. Gun buy backs will be a huge push as well.

    • it was not cool when BLM looted the Nike store in portland, but the nike store is not the bedrock of democracy, the capitol building IS

    ++++++++++++++++++++
Assuming i’m stuck with Tua, (which i would not have been if i were calling the shots) i would have to continue to beef up the OL whether that be FAcy or the draft. like everyone else i’m not sold on our recs. Williams is a big question mark, he can’t seem to stay healthy, not sure how wilson comes back after a year off, Grant is mediocre, Parker is a keeper but i would look to upgrade that position
even though i selected Tua with the 5th overall and judging him on this years i would not be impressed, I can Draft a QB but i don’t think that’s the answer if i am staying with Tua which it would appear that’s what they are doing. so my focus would be a safety net for Tua as Fitz was.
if i cant get Fitz back i have to look in F.A.cy for a veteran QB who could serve this purpose.
after watching Tua you can’t soley rely on him IMO

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Was really interested in what you would do if didn’t have to stick with Tua. And that is part of the answer. I’m all for beefing up the OL though, but seems we got 3 young’uns in the last draft. So no more than one high up in my mind. Think two wideouts (one high up) are on their way ….. unless they bring in Watson.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

If i were dumping Tua i still wouldn’t draft a QB with #3 overall unless Lawrence was there, i haven’t really looked at QBs so not sure if any of them are worth that pick, my focus with that pick would be to use to get more picks in the future. keep drafting 1st & 2nd rnd players and you are bound to be stacked.
Back to the QB issue, i would look to keep drafting QBs in the 2nd rnd every year till one stuck, like Ron Wolf did with the Packers.
when was the last time the Packers had a shitty QB?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Told you a while back would take a QB in the 2nd or 3rd if what seemed the right guy was there. But that is assuming we keep kicking the tires on Tua for next year at least. We need a starting QB for this team that is looking pretty good.

when you have a top 5 pick, you don’t pick a player that there is an abundance of, Smith is just another guy as far as i’m concerned, you can get great wrs later on.

you pick a guy that is rare, being rare means there’s not many of them to be had such as the Tackle, a big guy who’s athletic, you can’t find big and athletic, the bigger you are the less athletic you become.
    or a great pass rusher/ DL, i don’t think there’s one worth #3 overall

Lamar Thomas, former Dolphins and Bucs WR was exactly 6’1 175. I liked him a lot, I remember a MNF game against the Broncos where he caught 6 for 136 and 3 TD’s. WR’s don’t get hit nearly as much as they used to. I’m not overly concerned about it.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

It’s not like 6’5″ 218 lb Preston W. and 6’3″ 211 lb Devonte Parker ever stay healthy. Maybe we could use the shifty guy that found ways to stay healthy against SEC competition for 4 years. Hell, 5’6″ 171 lb Grant has been far more healthy than either of those dudes and we drafted him at 165 lbs. Desean Jackson is also about Smith’s size.

What I like about Smith and elevates him over Chase is how he was one of two primary outlets for the best Bama team possibly ever. Chase dominated his championship game but was quiet against GA and OK. He could always break one open but there were other tools they used. Smith caught 117 passes! Him and Najee were the focus of that team all year and no one could stop them. No one. I want that bad.

Chase also just has a year’s worth of data and decided to sit. Smith has FOUR years of growth and work to become the weapon he is today. He was pretty damn good last year.

Devonta Smith caught 36% of every pass this year at Bama. He caught almost as many balls as the next 3 guys on the team combined. They lost Waddle in mid-October and just continued to destroy teams. The UF team they played was fantastic and Smith’s 184 yards, 2 TDs and making 45% of all Bama catches dominance helped them pull out a close one. He’s beyond good and willing to work at his craft.
