2021 NFL Draft – Less than 3 weeks away!

Draft day is approaching very quickly, so much so that I can already envision the arguments about who we took, when we took them and why we didn’t take this guy or that guy. It’s coming. Chris Grier and Brian Flores and the Miami Dolphins Scouting team will be questioned, ridiculed and revered by others all after 4 days of the draft in which the Dolphins currently hold 8 selections, starting with picks 5,18 in RD 1, 36 and 50 in RD 2, 81 in RD 3, 156 in RD 4 and then a long wait until picks 231 and 258 in RD 7. As usual, you can almost certainly expect some movement by our team in the draft, we have a history of wheeling and dealing, moving up back and all around at different junctures of the draft.

I think for the most part, the majority here understand that we need to help our QB by giving him better weapons on offense, and that could mean at a variety of positions including the trenches to give him better throwing lanes as well as keeping him healthy, more talent and reliability at receiver whether that receiver is a WR or TE and a durable ballcarrier who can also be a quality receiver out of the backfield. An easy way to have the QB improve is to give him better players around, see Ryan Tannehill and the Tennessee Titans for proof of such. We also have needs on defense but we made two key moves to make us better up the middle. First move was trading for ILB Benardrick McKinney to pair him with #55 Jerome Baker. We then signed FA DT John Jenkins. We do have AVG and Vince Biegel coming back on the outside but Biegel is coming off a torn achilles. He showed some promise before the injury, but whether the Dolphins are going to count on him remains to be seen. We need to get pressure from the edge, so I’d expect us to be looking at either an OLB or OLB/DE tweener who can rush the passer both standing up and with his hand in the ground.

Who are the most likely targets? I see mocks split for pick #6 with the usual suspects, WR Ja’Marr Chase, WR, DeVonta Smith, TE Kyle Pitts and OL Penei Sewell and Rashawn Slater. Once you get past our first pick, things as expected get more muddled. #18 is all over the map, from RB Najee Harris to EDGE rushers Kwity Paye, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Gregory Rousseau and Jaelan Phillips. Who we take at #6 will undoubtedly affect who we take next. If we don’t take a receiver with our first pick, say we go with an OL then I’m inclined to believe our next pick will be a WR. I can’t see going forward with the WR corps we currently have without finding a dependable, reliable high talent WR in this draft. I suppose receivers like Kadarius Toney or Rashod Bateman or Terrace Marshall could be the guy but I think we go for top tier talent here and either Chase, Smith or Pitts is the first pick. I’ll get more into the rest of the draft next week, and I’m sure there will be even more speculation, rumor and innuendo to discuss next week.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

I could see us trading up from 18 because if we get Pitts/Chase at 6 we could go after Parsons, but if we took Parsons at 6 then we might be able to move up and get Smith or Waddle.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

THAT’S what I’ve been talking about, YUP! My only trouble with that? We’d better hope one of the top RBs are still on the board @ R2P4 for us.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I agree. I don’t think Parsons gets past the Pats at #15. They loaded up on offense in FA.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Doubting we go Parsons at #6. We could either trade down from # 6 or trade up from #18 for Parsons. We stick at #6 and has to be a pass catcher.

Fields gets the Son seal of approval. I like his game stej will fuck up and take the “faggy” Wilson. Good for us. 9 ers will rock with Fields.
I still like Mac too he’s an NFL QB his only problem is he might be 10 years too late. The ball comes out and he drives the ball downfield he throws 35-40 yard passes on a rope.

    Trask.
I would take him at 50 and be happy despite my love for the brisket. Brissett’s biggest problems are the same as Tua. Throw the fucking ball it has to come out even if you throw it out of bounds, it’s gotta come out.

Well you know I’ve been high on Parsons for months. I think he’s exactly what we need. I really believe he’s a guy we can move around in our multiple defense.
    ————
YES… I know. I recall you asking me about Parsons a few months back. And it was YOU who got me thinking about the whole opt-out matters… meaning, how will scouts react to as much, without having seen one of these guys on the gridiron for over a year.

As far as I’m concerned, you were the first on Parsons on this blog. Me? I thank you for having asked me, but I was still in ‘what does this year off mean for these players?’ mode. Honestly? I didn’t think Parsons would kill his Pro-Day… but he certainly DID!

    Props to you, Tim!

Oh and BTW you argumentative fucks lol we don’t trade with San Fran unless Philly is already in place they said as much. Grier insisted with both teams to keep it quiet they said as much. We never wanted 12 but got to 6 by landing on “Free Parking”.

  6. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ve said many times I would not care if we took Parsons at #6. I know it won’t be popular but I don’t care. I think he’s going to be a pro bowler and all pro. There is even more WR depth than there is edge and LB.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

I want him too. He is so fucking fast. Question the pro day forty but his speed shows up like nobody else. Would love to have him.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’s got that prototype size to at 6-3 245. I don’t care if his 40 was more like 4.45 than 4.39 but he looks sub 4.5 which is just fine.

Piggs, I miss Landry too we should have never let him get away. I call it the Gase effect.
What do we need more than anything right now?
    Exactly we need Jarvis.
Flores wouldn’t have let him get away. Never misses a game and balls out every week.
He would have become one of the greatest draft picks we ever made.
    Griese

        Tryon from Washington too
But what I like about Cox is that he’s a fast coverage LB that could stay on the field and be an in the box Safety without losing anything in coverage.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I like Tryon too. Just remember Cox is what Baker is. Baker rarely leaves the field.

Because of the draft capital we have this year at the top, I would not mind packaging picks from next year to move around and get players we really dig. We need to get that next step started this year.

Agreed. There is some elite speed we can capitalize on and we need to and then you gotta go. Gitterdone (boy I miss him)
You put Parsons, Pitts/Chase and Harris/Williams on this team look out 👀

He’s an obvious fit, but what’s the motivation for putting it out there that Flores loves Parsons?

Is he stating the obvious, since it seems to be a perfect fit or is it a smokescreen?

Flores doesn’t tell everyone who they like, last year that person was Herbert

  25. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If Smith’s fragility isn’t an issue, he makes the most sense, especially if Fuller is resigned next year, because of his ability to get open and smoothness.

WRs that are smooth play faster than they are, because they don’t give you a chance to react, once they make their move they’re gone.

He seemed like he was toying with defenders at times last year, he’d run past, like they were standing still.

You could make a case for all 4 of these receivers and why we moved back to 6, and might move again to 8 or 9.

Pitts would be insurance for Gesicki, Waddle for Fuller, Chase is a little like our top 3 now, but Smith is in a class by himself.

Not saying Smith is better, just that he’s different, so something we don’t have

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

With that said, and if how the team feels, then maybe we don’t want QB4 taken before 6, because it may remove a trade partner.

Best thing to happen before 6 is Sewell taken IMO

  26. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Everything keeps going back to, whatever happens at 6, we’ll still be in a good position.

Say we trade back to 9 or 10, since it’s now out there that Flores loves Parsons, maybe someone jumps us and takes him, leaving us another receiver.

Dallas, Jones, seems to love Pitts, we could drop down to 10 and get some nice motivated compensation, if he’s there at 6.

Word seems to be, if you want to move up talk to the Fins, but not you Belicheat

  27. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    1a Parsons
    1b Oweh

  28. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Are you saying Parsons at 6 and Owen at 18?

That could work, but I’d rather have O fire power

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Defensive coach, trade back a little pick up extra picks and get Parsons, you may be able to do the same with 18 and still get the edge guy.

fill out your O power later on in the draft.

  29. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

    From Robert A. Heinlein’s “Friday” copyright 1982.

What are the marks of a sick culture?
”It is a bad sign when the people of a country stop identifying themselves with the country and start identifying with a group. A racial group. Or a religion. Or a language. Anything, as long as it isn’t the whole population.”
“…the population must lose faith in both the police and the courts.” “Elementary. Go on.” “Well…high taxation is important and so is inflation of the currency and the ratio of the productive to those on the public payroll. But that’s old hat; everybody knows that a country is on the skids when its income and outgo get out of balance and stay that way—even though there are always endless attempts to wish it away by legislation. But I started looking for little signs, what some call silly-season symptoms. For example, did you know that it is against the law here to be naked outside your own home? Even in your own home if anybody can see in?” “Rather difficult to enforce, I suspect. What significance do you see in it?” “… It seems to me that any law that is not enforced and can’t be enforced weakens all other laws.”
“Sick cultures show a complex of symptoms such as you have named…but a dying culture invariably exhibits personal rudeness. Bad manners. Lack of consideration for others in minor matters. A loss of politeness, of gentle manners, is more significant than is a riot.”

  30. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

So hard for me to do a mock and not trade down from #18.

6 Micah Parsons LB • Penn State
18 Teven Jenkins RT • Oklahoma State
36 Javonte Williams HB • North Carolina
50 Jabril Cox LB • LSU
81 Marquez Stevenson WR • Houston
    156 Michal Menet C • Penn State
231 Tarron Jackson ED • Coastal Carolina
258 Matt Bushman TE • BYU

Hunt/Jenkins on the right side would be sick. Substitute Trey Hill at OC and Kindley to LG we would have one nasty/mauling OL.

Parsons will be awesome opposite AVG! Looking at Jabril Cox, his versatility in our defense would be limitless with his coverage ability.

First, Jabril Cox at North Dakota State:

Then, at LSU. Did not miss a beat on the biggest stage in college football:

  31. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He’s a project, avg tackler at best, lacks instincts to be a great LB, but has some coverage skills, so there’s something to work with.

Maybe at 81, if we didn’t have any other needs

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He could be a 3rd down LB his first 2 years in the NFL, but until he gets more strength and gets in the film room JAG.

He looks more like a seam threat TE

  32. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i’d bet we trade back again, we have too much going on early and not enough in the later rnds.
there may be a team that wants to move up in the 2nd for a 2 next year like the saints did with us

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’d possibly trade down with both 1sts, depending on how the board falls, but not in the 2nd.

Somewhere between 8 and 10 seems to be our sweet spot, then down to around 25 to get Rousseau.

History tells me we should be able to get Williams at 36.

Top 4 wr + Rousseau and Williams, to go along with some extra draft capital and I’d be a happy camper

  33. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

two weeks to go, then we can get back to politics.

    T minus 341

  35. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Steve, my knocks on on Cox are he needs to get better at getting off blocks and better in pursuit.

The draft is not deep at edge or LB. He was the best I saw at #50 this go around. Ossai went at #45. Only other best option I had was Carlos Basham and he is more like a 4-3 DE than an OLB/Edge type.

You are not going to find an elite LB/Edge at #50 this draft really. I was just thinking versatility.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      Knock on wood?

Rousseau after a trade back in the 1st or another Edge like Oweh or Ojulari, then RB at 36 and we won’t need any more front 7 guys, go after a C or S at 50

  36. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Assuming we get some extra picks from trading down in 1st.

You never hit on all your draft picks in a year, so would you rather trade up after the 3rd round, so the guy taken is a better prospect or keep all the picks, with the thinking 1 of the may stick?

  37. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Steve, my biggest fear is Harris and Williams both going between #25(Steelers) and #35(Falcons). Falcons desperately need a RB. Etienne may be more their flavor though since they like to open things up.

  38. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I doubt we do anything at #6 other than take a player whomever that may be, we gave Philly too much for that spot, if they trade back out without getting a kings ransom that wouldn’t look very good. at 18 depending on who they are targeting, unless they are targeting multiple players that shiny new toy may be hard to resist.

  39. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

depending on what atlanta & cincy do that #6 pick may be worth a kings ransom, as there may be 2 out of the 5 first rnd qbs available there,

    who wants a QB?

  40. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I sure hope Philly gets our #32 pick next year, Otherwise there may be a hot seat available in Davie FL

  41. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    and the crowd goes wild!

  42. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Checked to see who we could possibly upgrade with all these extra mid round picks people want us to get.

On O assuming we take a WR and RB in the 1st 2 rounds, that leaves maybe 2 OL spots that might be upgraded.

On D assuming we take an Edge/ OLB in 1st or 2nd, we could have 2 spots open on front 7 and 2 open on the backend.

That gives us 6 possible upgrades after pick 36.

Pick 50 and 81, will be on the team, after that, say we had in addition to our 3 current picks, 2 or 3 more picks, so 5 or 6 picks to replace Needham, Eguavon, Tom and Pankey.

I guess we could use some upgrading, but is it going to improve the team this year?

You’d rather bolster the OL, then draft a lead back?
    _________________________________________________
i want a running game no doubt, but that also has to do with the OL as well, Hunt didn’t impress last year, we lost our center. and we have a good stable of RBs.
sure it would be great to get a shiny RB and we may.
realistically if i’m in flores & grier shoes, i do what i can to have manageable down and distance on 2nd. brown can do that for you if you have a solid OL.

  45. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

how high are they on our current situation at OL. IDK that info but i would assume they have to pay attention to it in the draft. you can find Rbs anywhere, 6.0 220 lbs guys that can run are plentiful, it’s tough to find a 330LBS guy that can move so it makes sense to spend your resources there.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

OL is a difficult position to excel at as a rookie, even Tunsil didn’t start kicking it into gear at LT until about year 3.

Hunt is good enough at RT, he has 2 more years to prove it, that’s when Flowers’ contract is up

  46. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Every year it’s the same, everyone wants that great RB or WR, the flashy guy over meat and potatoes, that guy can’t flash without meat and potatoes though.

  47. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

with the 36th pick in the NFL draft the dolphins select………Trey Hill, C/G, Georgia
    ——————————
I am guessing that was sarcasm. Trey Hill is like rated OC5. He would be a good pickup at #156. He is a bull in the run game and is almost impossible to bull rush. He just doesn’t really have the athleticism to move over to OG. An OC is what he is.

  54. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

speaking from reality, there’s no such thing as a UFO from outer space, if you could travel 1/10th the speed of light which would be really fast, 67,000 MPH it would get you to our nearest star in 40 years, and all you would find there are scorched planets.
the nearest confirmed goldilocks planet is in the trappest system 40 light years away.
it would take 400 years traveling at 67,000 MPH.
and we really don’t know if that could sustain life much less have intelligent beings.
we’ve been sending out radio signals traveling at the speed of light for 100 years and have yet to hear any alien signal. if trappest system had intelligent life we would have heard them by now
space is just too vast, UFO’s are fiction.

Another thing is, it most likely be life piloting UFOs but computer controlled just like we do with drones and sending technology to Mars. It’s probably not life coming here but technology from an alien race just like we’re starting to do on Mars. Think about them doing that 10,000 times longer than us just to throw out a figure. Just like when we see NASA high five each other in the control room when we have a landing, they did the same thing finally making it to Earth’s atmosphere. But maybe they just say nano nano. LOL

  61. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Tim,
The odds are just astronomically against it. First, We’ve only been capable of reasoning about the existence of UFOs for what? 15,000 years?

What are the odds we happen to get some probe, manned or unmanned in such a ridiculously small period of time in terms of scale of the time the universe? It would be like looking at a spot for a split second anticipating a lightning strike, then seeing a lightning strike in that split second you were expecting it…except infinitely more improbable, lol.

2nd, if an alien technology had the capability of finding us during the same period of time they were also in existence (another astronomically small chance) and had the ability to get here, why would they need to send all sorts of different flying saucers or whatever over and over again? They would obviously have the capability of knowing whatever they needed to without even having to send probes into our atmosphere over and over for us to discover.

That is just two of so many things that would have to happen for UFOs to have been/be here, that it isn’t even worth the time to bring it up all the other stuff. The only argument that changes the odds IMO is if we were created by an alien race because it takes all those things out of it other than the tech to move between the stars.

I think there is life out there, but I think the universe has either been created, or happened to develop, in a way that keeps us separated from each other.

Think on this- We’ve been sending out radio waves into space for 100 years (very generously) in an attempt to make contact. We have approximately 50 stars that are within 16 light years of us. Those radio waves have only traveled far enough to reach maybe 100 of the closest stars or so.

In the words of Douglas Adams- Space is big. Really big. You just won’t believe how vastly hugely mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it’s a long way down the road to the chemist, but that’s just peanuts to space. LOL

Kong, I’ve got some stuff to do so I’ll continue with this later on. Just remember our very primitive human existence is already sending stuff to another planet in Mars. When I said 10,000 that wasn’t years, that was x 100 since we’ve been technologically advanced. That would add up to a million years. Think about the knowledge and technology compared to ours. An alien race might be so out there of what we’re capable of comprehending at this time.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

        Cheers, Tim. 🙂

I can accept the possibility of tech greater than our own that we can’t conceive of. There are a lot of other highly improbable things that would have to be true as well, like the time factor I mentioned. That is a big one. Or the fact that a technology that great would have no need to send clunky things into our atmosphere.

I think we as humans just always have a need to make ourselves more important than we are, and belief that aliens are visiting us is just one manifestation of that. And that isn’t a knock on people that believe. I feel the same way about God and religion, so….

I still don’t get the love for Hunt or Kindley….or even Jackson. They were rookies, so I have no problem saying they can get better and be solid players. Jackson looks like he has a higher ceiling. But, none of them graded out very good. They all looked like rookies…no issue there….but Hunt should probably be a guard and Kindley better find a way to stay in shape and improve in pass pro. When you’re the 70-80th best player at your position….that isn’t good. Again, rookies, I get it….but none of them looked irreplaceable.

Kong, good point on aliens sending clunky things into our atmosphere. What if they weren’t clunky at all but the size of a pea or smaller that could travel long distances and gather data in ways we can’t comprehend just yet. Maybe instead of sending one, they send thousands to maximize their success rate. Maybe it takes hundreds of years to reach their destiny but being that they’ve been around for over a million years it’s not such a big deal. New generations keep it all going just like what we’re doing just far beyond where we’re at.

Then again, maybe it’s not a solid object of any size at all, but something else that can travel far distances. You said we’ve been sending radio waves into space for 100 years. Has it even been that long? And if so, do you think that’s been good enough since 1921? We just started inventing cars and airplanes around that time. How were we reaching the far distances of space?

Speculatively, if it were happening, I think it would likely be something like what you outline above- energy based or using some sort of quantum mechanic technology, not giant tic-tacs moving weirdly in the sky, lol.

There are a lot of things that would have to happen for an alien visitation to even be possible, let alone actually happen, and while I don’t think it is impossible, I think it highly, highly unlikely. I personally think the odds of us being created by aliens a far more likely possibility, which I guess would then mean I do believe we are being visited by aliens, lol. But I think that highly unlikely as well.

It’s all fun speculation. And who knows? Maybe next week first contact happens globally, and all of our lives change. Just keep a tinfoil hat nearby and remember…swing away. LOL

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

But what was that tic tac? Maybe an anomaly or a purposeful deviation? Maybe a hologram or another illusion. Do you think a superior alien species could do that to us just like we do to other less intelligent species on Earth? I mean we catch fish with colored lures that are not real food. LOL

We tend to think we humans are at the top of it all, but maybe we’re at the level of krill in the ocean in the big scheme of things in the universe.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Tim, the 100 years thing when I said it I also said ‘very generously’, that was to indicate I was basically rounding it off to 100 years because I was too lazy to look up the exact date and I figured it was obvious. It’s probably closer to 60, but when talking about intervals this small, the difference between 60 and 100 is entirely insignificant.

the orb hovered silently, only 10 yards from Me, looking at Me, or so I thought, then it went over the roof of the animal hospital, and somehow the dogs sensed it and howled as loud as they could until it was about 100 yards away, then the dogs stopped, and the craft went ZOOM, full warp speed and gone, without making any noise i could hear, but the dogs heard it, must have been a very high pitch like a dog whistle, very weird

  81. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Tim,

So alien probes is the most likely answer to the tic tac? Um no, just because we encounter a lot of phenomenon we don’t understand yet, doesn’t mean aliens is the answer.

Using science we currently have, unexplained phenomenon are more likely to be nearly anything else other than aliens because the laws of physics as we currently know them say so.

You can speculate and say “well what if?”, but you can do that about anything at any time. It doesn’t suddenly make it any more likely. It’s just wild theory with nothing to hang it on.

    • David Collins's avatar David Collins says:

saying there are no alien life forms, is also a theory with nothing to hang it on

this is a total grey area, with nothing concrete, except to say what it does that we can see

its VERY strange, and appears and acts unworldly

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

“the laws of physics as we currently know”

That’s the point I’ve been trying to make. We humans think we know how it all works. I don’t think we do. But it’s all we know and that’s cool. Just don’t think we’re even close to that. We humans still have issues with the color of our skin which is primitive. Forget the whole God thing. That to me has been bizarre for as long as I can remember.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

        Tim,
I understand that we don’t know everything yet, so aliens might be here. That’s what the point is, some insane technology that we can’t even comprehend changes what we know about science allowing for aliens to be here. It isn’t a complicated thing to speculate wildly about what might exist.

My point is- I may be Dorothy and you may be Toto, and all I have to do is click my heels together 3 times, and we’ll be back in Kansas.

But just because that possibility exists in some theoretical sense, that doesn’t mean it should be the first answer we look to, because it goes completely against everything we know.

I.e. unexplained phenomenon being attributed to aliens goes against all scientific knowledge, therefore it is highly probable that some other answer exists.

If you believe it’s aliens, that’s cool, man. 🙂

  82. David Collins's avatar David Collins says:

who are we to identify all of the human life forms? and animals, plants, etc?

its possible we have not seen them all yet, and when we see unexplained mysteries flying around, its because of people, life forms, and technology that we have not been exposed too?

all i can say is there is some sort of sentient life form, that is either flying these craft, or remote controlling them

who manufactures these things? and can we buy one? lol

We each have our own belief and value systems, and religion can be a great vehicle for instilling those, but people will always be people. I’ve met some highly religious people that were really great people and met some that were really shitty people.

My mother’s side is mostly Catholic, and I spent a few of my younger years going to a Presbyterian church. That was enough for me to decide on another path.

Hubble takes pics of galaxy’s over 13b light years away and they seem to disappear, dropping off the edge of visibility, not because they are not there anymore but because they are moving away from us faster than the speed of light.

we are moving ourselves, this solar system moves thru space at 500,000 MPH towards something called the great attractor, we can’t see this attractor because it is on the other side of our galaxy and the dust obscures it. we will be able to see what this is in about 100,000 years give or take, that’s when we will be on the other side of the galaxy.
