11 days and counting . . . THE 2021 NFL DRAFT

Less than 2 weeks away, and the closer it gets, the crazier it becomes. I’m willing to eat some crow here if I’m wrong, but those of you fawning over Micah Parsons or any other defender for that matter, are barking up the wrong tree. I mean no disrespect, but no matter how good our defense is, if we don’t surround our QB with premium weapons, why would you expect the offense to be premium? Let’s face it, the NFL is an offensive league, and the Kansas City Chiefs have proven that to be the case by making back to Super Bowl appearances, winning last year in 2020 but losing to the offensive powerhouse Tampa Bay Buccaneers in this past Super Bowl. Did TB have the better defense? Yes, but their defense was a compliment to their own high powered offense. The TB offense put up 492 points (#3 in the NFL) and allowed 355 points (8th in the NFL). The Miami Dolphins on the other hand were #15 in the NFL on offense, and to be fair, a lot of that was a decline in the offense after Tua took over for Fitzpatrick. The Dolphins averaged 26.6 points with Fitz at the helm and only managed 24.4 with Tua, including a couple of relief appearances by Fitz which helped that average. On defense, the Dolphins were #6 for points allowed at 21.1 PPG. My point is, if you think we’re taking a LB at #6, THINK AGAIN!!!

The Dolphins have to improve this offense and that could be done a few different ways. I’ve made it clear and will continue to reiterate that our WR corps is shaky at best. The top 3 are all health question marks, Parker, Fuller and Williams. The next 3, depending on what order you believe the depth chart is would be Bowden, Hurns and Wilson. The latter 2 haven’t played in over a year and were both recovering from serious injuries, Wilson with that terrible hip injury which he seemed to have finally shaken off by his last season’s end and Hurns who suffered a gruesome ankle injury with the Cowboys in January of ’19. Add Jakeem (No Hands) Grant and Malcolm Perry, Mack Hollins and Robert Foster and I’m sorry but you just can’t expect Tua to improve with this crew. No, they need TOP SHELF talent, and being at 6, we will get it. One of the following players will be there, Chase, Pitts or Smith. I had dismissed Smith for a while because once we acquired another WR who can’t stay on the field, my thought was the last thing we need is a 170 pound WR at #6, but there is familiarity and a super high level of talent there, and in spite of his smallish stature, he knows how to stay on the field and is a superior route runner who gets separation. I still believe if Chase or Pitts is there, we will go with one of those guys but if the Falcons don’t take a QB and the Bengals don’t go OL , potentially Pitts and Chase could go respectively.

While the O-line was much improved, from terrible to average, it’s not yet become a force. I think it’s pretty clear that both Solomon Kindley and Robert Hunt are our guards for the foreseeable future, and Austin Jackson is one of the bookends, most likely our LT. Penei Sewell could be that bookend that really pulls things together. I think the way we handled the center position in FA leads me to believe we’re going to draft a center, which would mean a 2nd or 3rd RD pick, because the acquisition of former Ravens C Matt Skura was underwhelming. The Ravens are a first class organization, and when they let a guy walk, there’s a reason. Add in the fact that he’s here on a 1YR deal makes me feel like Skura is here to start unless the rookie we draft beats him out or if the rookie isn’t ready to start. Sewell would be an upgrade over swingman Jesse Davis who has been wonderful filling in anywhere and everywhere. Giving Tua more time and confidence that he has ample time makes him a better QB.

I do think one of our first 4 picks will be on a LB/EDGE player, but not at #6, we just have to give Tua a chance here, and nothing we’ve done in the offseason despite a couple of potentially good signings in Will Fuller and Malcolm Brown have really elevated the talent here. Fuller is too often injured and Brown is a committee type RB, not a bell cow back. There are LB’s and tweener LB/EDGE guys that could help at #18 like Jaelan Phillips, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Kwity Paye, Gregory Rousseau, Azeez Ojularia, Jayson Oweh etc. I get the Parsons love, I do, but with the state of our offense, I think that needs to be the focal point for a premier player, just the way I feel. We simply can’t wait to see who’s available at #18, unless we trade up from #18, which is possible, it’s about getting great players that impact the team, not about quantity. Quality over quantity every time, especially where we’re at in the rebuild.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

One of your better ones Mike E. And could not agree more that we have a pass catcher coming our way. And what is nice about Chase, Smith, Waddle and Pitts is that they can all play slot. So we can have all our fancy pieces on the field at the same time.

I’m hoping we think outside the box and go with a good special teams players at 6. Maybe the best gunner in the draft or perhaps a kicker to back up Sanders!

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m still cool with whatever we do in the draft. Winning games is all that matters.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

It’s sorta of hard to screw up the sixth pick, least as far as anyone knows on draft day. Would be different if you made an RG3 trade to get there.

  8. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

So again yesterday, all day on patio shorts n tee shirt.. today snow … this winter is like Covid, it refuses to go away

  9. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Seriously, if Pitts and Chase gone be fine with Smith , trade down Waddle later, parsons or Sewell

  10. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Question is, say Chase and Pitts are gone and we’re not interested in Sewell or Smith at #6.what team do you see trading up to get Sewell or maybe Lance or Smith?

  11. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Don’t see anyone trading up for QB outside of NE or CHI … and doubtful NE trades up with us ..
Detroit and Carolina won’t take a QBs, teams may want to get in front of Denver that about it

Likely at that point more interest moving up for Sewell.. NYG, DAL, LAC. So now we’d be borderline outside top 10

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Denver may want a QB pending who’s available at 6, i don’t think Elway is very happy with Lock

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Don’t forget that if Pitts and Chase both go the 4th QB will be there for the plucking. Right now we are talking about teams moving to #4 for that. Could see Denver moving up to lock down. And us at #9 would leave at least two of Smith, Waddle, Sewell, Parsons.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

But great point that trade ups for Sewell come into the mix at that point as well.

  12. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    Mike
how did Fitz & his recs move us right down the field against the broncos & raiders and Tua’s recs sucked? weren’t they the same recs?

what i don’t understand is how are rec group sucked with Tua at the helm as you stated and how they played great with Fitz?

will adding more recs make Tua better?

  13. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I think Brissett beats out Tua.

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob, when you stop comparing a 16 year veteran QB to a rookie who had no training camp, preseason games or even first team practice snaps until week 7, then we can talk

  15. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – also, not just adding more receivers, it’s adding better receivers. Look at the receivers on KC, TB and the other playoff teams and our WR corps doesn’t belong on the same page with those teams

Maybe there is another Ferguson brother available

  17. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Tua is going to start and there will be no QB competition. Last year Tua was a rook coming off of an injury and the lack of reps and typical offseason is why he sat for a few games like Mike said. That’s also why we flip flopped QBs from time to time. This year it’s Tua’s job until he shows he can’t get the job done, and that won’t be because of a couple of bad games, this year he has to play through that and the team has to allow him to do that. If Tua doesn’t pan out it will be because he continues to spiral downward over a long stretch of time. I don’t see that happening. I think we’ll make the playoffs with him at the helm.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Think everyone other than ORob thinks Tua will start. But if Tua does start means Tua is at least better than ORob thinks.

  18. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If Tua throws the ball 30 times in week 1 that’s just an opportunity to tell ORob how wrong he was 30 more times.

  19. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Okay so what of the draft falls like this

At 6 the Dolphins take Chase or Pitts (it doesn’t matter for this hypothetical)

Now Parsons is on the board. He gets past 10

Do trade up from 18 to draft parsons
It doesn’t have to be 11…maybe it’s 12 (which is silly) or 13 or whatever

But what do you give up

I’m happy to give up the 18 and our 3rd round pick if it gets is in position (somewhere between 10 and 17) to draft parsons

Can we do that? A 3rd rounder and the 18 to move up as many as 6 or 7 spots?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

That’s my plan, Pigster! I’m moving up from R1P18 to land Parsons. I think it might take our second 2nd round pick to do so, though.

    ———-
ORob, Elway is no longer Denver’s GM… he stepped down. All the more reason why Denver may look to replace Elway’s mistake in Lock.

Yes, you are correct… that means a possible trade-up with us @ R1P6.

  21. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Who had one?

  22. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy, I have no problem moving up from #18. Like I said, quality over quantity!

  23. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    I’ve got 2 creative options (trades)… here’s 1…

  24. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ve seen Parsons mocked to Denver #9 so we probably won’t be trading up that far but who knows. We seem to have a good relationship with the Eagles so maybe at #12. I wouldn’t be surprised if DET drafted Parsons at #7. Dan Campbell wants to play a physical style of football so that would make sense.

  25. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Detroit is kind of starting over so I think any position is on the table.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Anything is possible for Detroit, agreed. Still think WR is where they need to start, but who knows.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I would never start turning over my team with WR as the main position. Trenches is where that starts.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m not sure they need to blow the whole thing up, but maybe they will. You and I recognize Dan Campbell as an ‘acolyte’ of Bill Parcells, so maybe they will.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

New GM and HC screams massive turnover. DET is not only a few players from turning things around. Goff is a pro QB to at least keep things respectable but I think he’s a stopgap, but maybe for at least 2 years.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The top of the draft is not the only place you can find quality WRs. There is some good depth in this draft.

  26. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I want the draft to go like all the mock draft sites where we can take Parsons straight up at #18. Have a feeling we’d have to do a bit more work than that though….. even if hell yeah don’t want him at #6.

  27. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I say we stay @ 6 unless a Tunsil deal comes knocking.

    MikeE,
Thanks for the effort, as always!
    ***
I’m confused. Do most folks here see Hunt as a RT or guard? I thought most have been saying he’ll be our RT of the future? I agree with you that he should be a guard. I’d put him at LG because he has better movement skills and is probably a better pulling guard than Kindley…who is more of a road grader. If Hunt isn’t our RT going forward then OT should definitely be on our radar! Davis can play anywhere and is a valuable backup because of it…but I’d prefer he not start at tackle.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I view Davis a very good (Left, as you suggest) Guard, and ‘meh’/serviceable at RT. Penei Sewell again enters the convo @ R1P6.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Hunt has guard in his future far as I’m concerned. And doubting that Flowers is in a contract year….. seems we could take a tackle in this draft. Same time don’t have too either. Sewell sure would look nice though.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think it’s too early to tell where all of last year’s rookie OL settle in. We’re just getting started with that.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If it is too early now…. they are going to have to figure out whether to re-sign Flowers or not after this season. So the time is coming.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I was talking what side they play on. Flowers is signed through 2022.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

My bad on Flower’s contract, even if will note he could be cut in the offseason (only 1 mil in dead money). So we could take a T, even if having Flowers signed makes it less likely.

And I was talking about moving Hunt to guard (like Randy was)….. so guess two different things. But getting Hunt to LG means taking Flowers’ place. Seems they like Kindley a lot.

I had a waterbed for a few years with first wife, led to a new relationship with chiropractors

  30. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Somebody I rarely see talked about here is Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, LB, Notre Dame. He’s light, but he’s a great player. It would NOT surprise me if he’s one of our targets, along with Azeez Ojulari, LB, Georgia, @ R1P18.

I’m not endorsing either to be our pick @ R1P18, just sayin’ there’s a strong possibility that our Draft Board has them in consideration.

  31. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MF13,
I like Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah too. He and a couple other guys like Davis are why I’m really not all that worried about getting Parsons. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah is a really nice player. A classic rover LB that fits in perfectly with how Flores plays defense. If they took him at #18, I’d be just fine with that.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I agree, in principle. Yes, if we miss out on Parsons, JOK and Jamin Davis are excellent fall-back options @ R1P18… if we really want to fill out our D-side of the ball.

      Still, I love Micah Parsons.

  32. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Randy,

Funny, is it not… the Bengals and we Phins are in very similar situations, but ya rarely here about that. Just as Joe Burrow needs to be protected, so does Tua.

Burrow has some nice weapons, as does Tua (minus a Joe Mixon RB).

Penei Sewell is being slept on, and I’ve seen him slip out of the top-10 in many mocks due to… WEAPONS GALORE in this Draft!!!

Penei should NOT be ruled out as our potential R1P6 selection. No, he’s not a sexy new toy, but he’ll make everybody BETTER.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Just posted about that last night. It doesn’t matter what skill players you have if you can’t block the plays. There are some other good tackles in this draft as well. Slater, Jenkins and Darrisaw. Wouldn’t be surprised if that’s where we go at #18.

  33. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,
I like Sewell, but he doesn’t really look like the “generational” tackle folks say. I know others here have said the same. That’s fine with me, as he’s still pretty damn good. I know I ask for OL all the time, but Sewell and Jackson as our tackles for the next 10 years would be a huge benefit to this organization. Just think of possibly not having to worry about our OT position for the next decade? That’d be awesome.

  34. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    stanger,
After Kindley went out last year, they actually put Davis at RT and moved Hunt inside to RG in some games. That kinda told me they weren’t really sold on Hunt’s ability to lock down the RT position. Maybe it was just because he’s a rookie and they felt more comfortable with Davis and the matchups they had but that’s not really a great sign for Hunt either.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Hunt coming from a small school was viewed as a player who will need some time but with upside because he’s a big athletic guy.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And obviously Davis could have played G. And this will sound stupid, but main thing for me is Hunt just looks like a guard.

  35. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MF13,
If Cindy actually doesn’t draft an OT with their first pick, they should be kicked in the nuts. That would just be stupid for them.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Just so ya know, Cindy (LOL) signed vet Riley Reiff (1-year deal) to man RT, opposite Jonah Williams. If they feel they can get by this one year with that, and to draft an elite player @ R1P5, they may not draft an OT with their first pick. They may even address OT in the 2nd or 3rd rounds, who knows.

      I AGREE with you, though!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed Sewell is right there for them.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I suppose it comes down to what Cincy thinks of Jonah Williams as a LT at this point. Draft Sewell and move Jonah to RT?

  36. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Hey, I don’t have to worry about figuring out how to pay players! Lol
    ***
How would you pay Parsons and, say, Baker? Or Howard and Jones? Or Pitts and Gesicki?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I was being tongue and cheek. But Baker and Gesicki are up next year. Howard and Jones are signed for multiple years. 2nd year Jackson and a rookie like Sewell will be in back to back years. You see what quality tackles get paid. Parsons wouldn’t be up for 4-5 years. Then there is Tua if he’s our QB of the future. It gets scary if they all have to be paid within a two year span.

  37. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Hunt was also viewed as a guard in the NFL by most. It’ll be fun to see how he and Kindley grow into their second seasons.

  38. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Randy — even if getting a cornerstone T like Sewell in the draft, won’t be upset if don’t go that way. Will if we don’t take a C in the 2nd or 3rd. That one we do need.

  39. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,
Yeah, I follow all Iowa players. Problem is that he hasn’t exactly been playing great the last few years. His time at MN was, let’s just say, inconsistent. They may have signed him just to have a fairly solid vet to play if a rookie needs some time to develop.
    ***
I can see the logic in using a top 5 pick on a skill position, as they probably feel they’re not gonna have a lot of those sorts of picks for awhile. I have no idea what future picks they have.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think the football perspective you bring to this place is GRAND, and I’m not joking around… nor am I looking for ‘brownie points’ when it comes to you.

It does start in the trenches, and it ends in the trenches. I learned that by Peter King anointing us as paper-Super Bowl contenders in ’06. We had former Pro-Bowlers at every single Offensive position, but for our O-Line.

Our Offense fell apart, being our O-Line couldn’t protect our QB, nor could it spring our RBs… lesson LEARNED.

And our Defense wasn’t much better, even though we had some former Pro-Bowlers on that side of the ball. We leaked yardage at the LOS.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Funny, though… after Saban left and after the abysmal effort of Cam Cameron, Bill Parcells came to town and fortified the trenches. Suddenly, we had zero playmakers on either side of the ball! It took the WILDCAT to win our division.

I hope we’ve all learned from past experiences… we need a happy medium.

  40. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Isn’t it cool that we actually have some OL including 2nd year guys that we’re wondering who will play where instead of we need a whole lot?

  41. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    stanger,
I don’t really expect them to draft an OL at #6, but I think the position has value at #18 for us. I’m not anchored to any player or position. We can go lots of ways. I just want good players. Hell, I’d even be okay with a TE, WR or RB in the first round….and those aren’t positions I usually like to take in the first round. This draft should be fun to watch.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Sorta fun to watch when you have 4 picks in the top 50. Hard to lose.

And they used FA to make sure we don’t need much. Exception to that is edge. Has to be one of those taken in the first 3 picks. If there was a super-stud rusher…. would be betting on him at #6. But there is not. So has to come at #18 or up top of the 2nd.

  42. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Randy – I think Kindley and Hunt will be guards here, like I said for a while. Not sure Hunt has the athleticism and pass blocking ability to be Tua’s blind side. I did initially think Hunt could be a RT.

  43. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I know you were just joking. It’s part of why I don’t really get into the salary cap and all that’s stuff. I just don’t care, and I prefer not to! Lol
    ***
I’m just focused on getting good players. If that puts us in some sort of cap hell, I’m sure they’ll figure it out. Worst case scenario if they both turn out to be really good is getting a bunch of picks in a trade….and Tunsilling it! Sorta the opposite of pulling a Munson! Lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah man, I was just pointing out if all these young players pan out the cap becomes an issue. No need for us to worry about that now. Have a good 2021 season and we’ll deal with that down the road. 🙂

  44. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MF13,
Parcels liked big, strong guys over small and fast/quick. His way of evaluating players back then just doesn’t work in the NFL anymore. Believe me, I have had to completely change the way I look at players in the past 20 years. The game transitioned to being much more about speed. Big, strong and slow just doesn’t play anymore except maybe at NT…and even those guys are 320 pounds and light on their feet now. If you can’t make a play in about 3 seconds…forget about it.

  45. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    stanger,
No doubt. One of the things I’m most curious to watch is how they go about addressing the edge. I think there are several ways they can approach it. Another is just what sort of WR they take. I think they’ve done a great job of maintaining ambiguity and not giving away their approach. I don’t think it’s ever a bad idea to go BPA in the first round.

  46. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not trying to start a social commentary or political discussion. This is still a football discussion. With all the Rooney Rule stuff that gets discussed why haven’t I heard much about Detroit hiring Brad Holmes as their GM?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Who’s Brad Holmes….lol

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Exactly! When there is a shortage of minority hires it’s a story. When they do get hired it’s much more quiet. I was just pointing out that the media thrives on the negative not promoting the goodness.

I’m glad the Dolphins are the frontrunners with the Rooney Rule. 🙂

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I doubt fans of other teams heard much about Grier being black.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Exactly! They probably don’t realize it’s not just Grier as GM, but Flores as HC with Marvin Allen (Asst. GM) and Reggie McKenzie (senior personnel executive).

The media doesn’t champion it when it happens, only criticizes when it doesn’t happen.

People also forget there have been plenty of minority personnel people and coaches who have been fired because of poor results or their time was up. Just like with white personnel people and coaches. Winning is key. That’s all it’s about.

  47. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Randy, what I liked about what Flores did last year was play a lot of young players to get a look, a body of work and a grade. If you hold them back, you prolong their development and complicate your future decisions.

  48. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
When you blow it up ya kinda gotta play young guys. It’s also a great way for a coach to entrench his system and what he expects. Rookies and young players are much more likely to go along whereas vets may not be so willing to buy in. If you want to build a new culture, it’s a lot easier when you start from scratch.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Absolutely! That was something Grier and Flores knew they had to do, and Ross had to sign off on which he did. But sometimes coaches get queasy and can’t stick with the plan. 😉

Example was bringing in Jordan Howard and Matt Breida to be a vet backfield and Myles Gaskin beats them both out. Even Salvon Ahmed jumped Breida.

  49. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – You’re right. They should be celebrating that a black Head Coach was hired. It seems they’d rather feast on the negatives, which is a shame. Not a fan of the way their narrative at all.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Brad Holmes was hired by DET as GM which is top dog even over the HC. I knew they fired everyone and Dan Campbell was the new HC but had no idea who the GM was. Why is that? I watch NFL coverage often and this not a topic?

In the Denver game when Fitz throws the killer int?
    _______________________________________

Ken, that pick was thrown after he marched us down the field to try to win the game, he had one shot, Tua had the entire game.
the point being Fitz took over from Tua and it looked like a different offense, all of a sudden we could move the ball. and that happened multiple times last year.
so the common denominator is not the wrs, rbs or te. it’s the qb.

i know he didn’t have a training camp, he was injured, he doesn’t have enough weapons, all these lame excuses makes me want to hit my shin on a trailer hitch!

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Marching down the field means nothing when you throw down the middle of the field into double coverage when it matters.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

you’re getting lost on the point of the topic,
the point is Tua didn’t have 100 yards throwing the ball in that game, i think it was 83 the entire game, Fitz equaled that output in one series.
they played with the same offense. HELLOOOO!!!

        same as the Raider game

you could have randy moss and calvin johnson and it wouldn’t make a difference

Rob – to keep things fair, you have to remember that Preston Williams went down game 8, just when Tua took over. Then DVP got hurt, and although he played some, he was clearly not himself. So once Tua had become the QB, he was basically throwing to the rookies Bowden, Perry and also Mack Hollins, Isaiah Ford and Grant. Sorry if all this hurts your narrative . . .

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

It doesn’t hurt my narrative, you keep coming up with the same lame excuses, so tell me how can Fitz thrive and Tua cant pass for 100 yards in the same offense with the same players on the same day?

even though Fitz has been around Tua was the #5 overall pick, you would think he could at least muster 200 yards, do you think Herbert would’ve had that game?
it doesn’t matter that Fitz is a vet, it wasn’t even close.

      Tua failed miserably

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, I know, Fitz still came in and moved the team , blah blah blah blah. lol

  70. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

he can’t go thru multiple reads and throw the ball from the pocket, he’s too short compounded by a very low release point, he gets stuck. he can’t get the ball off that late in the progression, he has to take off to get clear of throwing obstructions.

you can not be an NFL QB under those circumstances

he can only thrive when he gets the ball out quickly. ck down charlie!

problem with that is DC’s will take that away from him as they did in the Denver & Raider games

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s not “can’t”, is that he hasn’t yet.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

there’s a reason for that, that reason is he CANT! throw over the obstacles in front of him.
        can that be fixed?
I would not think so. he throws that way for a reason.

        lack of arm strength

  71. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – You want to bet we take a WR or TE with our first pick?

  72. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Say they take Pitts? do you think Gesicki is that far behind Pitts? is it night & day that Pitts is way better than Gesicki?
do you think all of a sudden Tua will be able to complete the same passes he was unable to complete with Gesicki?

It aint the wheel, it’s the nut behind it!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You’re forgetting many passes Tua hit receivers for chunk yards. He also hit Gesicki in the hands twice down the field that he failed to come down with the ball. All a QB can do is get it there.

  76. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s hard to argue with the points Orob is making, and even though Russell Wilson is short with a similar arm he’s more mobile.

Tua needs to do something this offseason to adjust, just throwing with guys isn’t going to cut it, he needs to stand behind some 8′ boxes set in place to act as lineman.

No one knows his fate one way or the other, what we do know is its not going to be an easy transition.

What he does have in his favor are the intangibles. The question will be is it enough to overcome his height and arm strength, which leads me to receivers…

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Receivers should be graded on a weighted scale, same as QBs, but with different weighted points of emphasis.

For WRs I’d put hands first, then height right at the top, with 6′ as the ideal height. Over 6′ starts to lesson the ellusivenss.

      • David Collins's avatar David Collins says:

its hard to argue with orob, because hes stuck in an ancient curmudgeon rut , and his hate against Tua is unjustified IMO

Tua can throw a TD< but he saw an INT, lol

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You’re stuck on the word hate and aren’t paying attention to what he’s saying.

Height, throwing over the lineman is a concern, that’s why Tua has been working on I this offseason.

You also can’t deny how many times he got stuck in the pocket and didn’t throw to open receivers.

Can you honestly deny these 2 major talking points?

If not he there’s legitimacy to what he’s saying.

Lots of talk by people in the media about these 2 key issues

  77. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

For us I like Smith as our best fit, he’s the most likely to get separation, unlike any of our current WRs not names Fuller.

He’s a shorter version of Rice.

Why was Jerry so good? He was a great technician more than anything else.

Smith is the ultimate technician, never seen anyone better.

Great technicians I’ve seen Rice, Holt, Harrison, Warfield…

I think only Warfield and Rice were close, but Rice losses a little being taller, where he gains is using that height on slants.

With Smith it would allow Tua to throw quick passes, because of how fast he gets open.

Last year, when we didn’t scheme to create an open receiver it was a lot of jump balls, this year we have Fuller, Smith would be a great compliment.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Jeudy is also a technician WR, but not on the level as those above.

Any wonder why Jeudy was more successful than Ruggs in 2020?

How about Duper vs Clayton the technician?

Both were great, but one had better stats, and I’d say Duper benefitted more from Marino.

When in doubt take the technician.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

  78. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

    MikeE,
good write … and your logic is solid!
As an advocate of Parsons, I gladly admit that your scenario is easily something I can live with. 🙂

I completely agree with your comment about the important skill for a pass catcher at #6 is ‘SEPARATION’ (as everyone here knows how poorly our receivers ranked in this area). I still don’t understand why Gesicki wasn’t better at getting separation. 😦 Pitts and Smith jump to the forefront of my mind when singularly thinking about ‘separation’. I’m sure Chase is there too, but I watched so many games of Pitts and Smith my reaction is simply recent experience.

I also agree that OL, specifically T, is yet another way to help Tua. Given enough time, coupled with rules that favor offense, maybe Parker/Gesicki et.al. get the separation needed. Fitz is a gunslinger and doesn’t care about separation LOL, thus his good/bad rep. The swing (low risk gamble) at Wilson suggests Fins also are thinking this way. I would be just as happy with Sewell at #6 and WR Marshall at #18 if it’s an all offense first round. However, if we go with the assumed pass catcher at #6, both Alabama OL fit the mold of the type of OL Grier/Flores have targeted.

If we go pass catcher at #6 and pass rush at #18, we have the ammo to move up from 36 into the back end of the first round to secure one of those Alabama OL and still have the picks to get a RB. I think Grier wants to get Flores the type of players Flores thinks he needs and there is no such thing as a “reach” if the guy fits Flores’ vision.

So, sticking with your logic … which pass catcher not only helps year one, but has best chance of becoming a pro bowler type guy during his rookie contract years?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’m pretty much on par with what Mike wrote, but I don’t want Sewell at 6, I want Smith, as we can get another top OL that will work just as well.

      Thinking Teven Jenkins at 18.

Even since that article came out from tradey pants on why Pitts isn’t a good fit for us I’ve had this block, that I can’t get past.

The more I think about it, the more I think he’s right, but then I think about running a 2 TE O and that complicates things more.

Smith is the most ideal, but can’t really go wrong with any of the top 4, even though Waddle will be the slowest out of the gate.

Fins on the clock at 6, QB went 4, Sewell went 5, I’d be shocked, if it wasn’t Pitts

      • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Gesicki, Smythe, Shaheen … Pitts …. Notre Dame used 3 TE sets regularly with one of them essentially playing like a WR (Mayer)… QB Ian Book is short and not very athletic but an O’Brien semi-finalist 2x … those 3 TE sets set him up for success and actually helped the run game! I wonder if this idea has any chance to translate to NFL.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We used 13 personnel last year at times and it was successful

  79. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

MikeE, … a baseball comment: Mets got 9 games out of Jed Lowrie for $20 million, and now he’s back the the A’s (for the third time!!!) and he’s batting .333 with 2 HR and 18 RBI in 54 AB for $1.5 million one year contract. I think he needs to realize that he needs to just stay in Oakland. lol. But Lowrie’s story is a microcosm of both Mets and A’s… Mets spend but something happens, A’s get bargains on guys who outplay their contracts. lol

  80. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i agree Steve, we have these forceful possession rec’s already, what we lack is elusiveness, adding chemistry with Tua , i think Smith fits in best in their eyes.

  81. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

you took Tua 5th over all now you’re compounding that mistake by taking Smith to accommodate your failure at 5th last year.

while i think Smith will be a great addition to this team i think the reasons for taking him may be misguided.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Smith is the best WR in this class, Pitts is the best TE prospect ever.

If you could have Rice or Calvin Johnson, who ya taking?

Exactly right, it doesn’t matter, what matters is how you use them

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

That depends if i have a rice or johnson already on the team, we already have a Chase or Pitts in Parker and Gesicki, what we don’t have is the elusiveness of smith.

    6 – Smith

  85. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I like Parsons, but I’m not trading down from 18 to get him with Owusu still on the board, and with Rousseau seemingly dropping out of rd 1 I’d rather take him at 36.

Jenkins I think would be a perfect RT, especially at 18, but he may be there at 36, if we decide Parsons or Owusu are more important at 18, then I hope Jenkins drops, otherwise Williams at 36.

    Interesting breakdown here…

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So when Tua gets flushed out of the pocket, he’s not so good. But within the pocket, he looks good. I think Penei Sewell could fix that.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

That is generally true with every QB

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Agreed, that it’s generally true… for a pure pocket-passer. But as the video above stated, there is this new breed of QB (Mahomes, Allen, Wilson, to name a few) who excel at extending the play outside of the pocket.

Can Tua be that type of QB, or is he going to be limited to in-the-pocket? Nothing wrong with having to play in-the-pocket, either. If that’s the case, we may look to solidify our O-Line further.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’ve heard that too, but I don’t agree with it, because of how they’re comparing the two.

Tua’s strength is throwing the quick stuff from the pocket, so naturally, he’s going to have some good numbers from the pocket, especially when the ball is thrown before pass rush matters.

What should be compared is when he’s standing in the pocket, not taking a 3 step drop to being outside the pocket.

I thought his second best passes were outside the pocket, with no rush blocking his view. His accuracy was really good.

Dude is just using some stats to back up what he thinks

  89. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

This guy is full of shit, in the beginning he throws deep with the CB deeper by a few yards then Parker and says he failed to read the CB leverage.

No one watching that, not on the Fins, really knows where the throw should’ve been. Looks to me like Parker went inside, but should’ve gone towards the sideline. Lack of communication, if anything.

First play he says Tua did a great job recognizing where the blitz was coming from, because of the blocking called. What I saw was he got lucky and sidestepped the free rusher, should hit the check down in Laird.

He’s mostly passing speculation off as fact

    —————-
And THAT, my friend, is the “Patsie* Way”. That neutralizes any and all pass-rushers, and you don’t have to spend a ton (high draft picks or $$$) on the O-Line. The Patsies* (Tom Lady* era) very seldom had an elite O-Lineman… but is that Tua?

CONVERSELY, the Chiefs had bookend, elite Tackles in Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz… with Patrick Mahomes as the mobile QB… but is that Tua?

It’s truly difficult to assess Tua at this time (half a season, coming off a career-threatening injury, no camp, etc) so we’ve obviously got to build around him.

I go back and forth on whether he needs more protection, or just more weapons.

  91. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’d like to dispel a rumor… the rumor of Tua being too short for the NFL. Look, Alabama’s O-Line was ENORMOUS when Tua was there… much like Russell Wilson’s O-Line at Wisconsin was ENORMOUS.

I DO agree with ORob that perhaps Tua needs to change his throwing mechanics to get the ball out higher like his contemporaries… and that can (if not WILL) be done. You’re not going to get a harder worker than Tua, I promise. He won’t fail us… unless the injury bug hits him (knock on wood).

We could do it, just don’t think we will. QB is a build the team around decision. Don’t think they would have traded down if the guy they wanted was going to be there at #3. But heck Lance or Jones might be their guy for all I know, even if either of them could go at #4.

Tom Brady had a great deep game, he stayed in that pocket forever throwing those deep bombs to Moss, Brady has great mechanics, the ball is way over his head when he throws, he’s also 6’4″ tall, there’s no comparison at all between Brady & Tua.
as for the Chiefs Tackles, obviously Fischer wasn’t all that important to them as he’s now a F.A.

What I saw in the video was a Blitzer coming free disrupting a play, another play the Blitzer was unblocked 6 rushers vs 5 blockers, some pocket collapses…

    Not entirely on the blockers.

Tua had some rookie growing pains, but will be better in those situations this year, because he’s a student of the game.

When Herbert was able to adlib on the outside, he made big plays, Tua has different strengths, that depend more on going thru his progressions and trusting what he sees.

The athletic QBs usually start out hot, but once they have to read a D, they come tumbling down or aren’t as successful.

I expect Herbert to have the same accuracy issues he had in Oregon.

Brady was mostly a check down game manager his first year, then once he figured it out he became who he is today

Not to knock Tannehill in any way (I love that kid, too!), but he also has Henry (2,000 yard rusher) to help him. Tanny never had that in Miami.
    ——————
To further this point, Tua never had run-support last year… just like Tanny in Miami. It’s time to get a prized RB this year to help Tua grow.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Tanny never failed us, we failed Tanny. Let’s not repeat the mistake with Tua… I know we won’t with Coach Flores and GM Chris Grier.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

When we moved on from Tanny was willing to give him one more year. Same time couldn’t say it was the wrong move…. they’d given him a lot of years. And we’ve had a lot of QBs since Marino….. name another one that burned up the NFL after his time with us.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Same here, Stanger: I wanted Tanny to come back one more year for us. Nevertheless, I’m happy for him and his success with the Titans… he earned it!

I think it was mutual failure.

RT is bad against pressure in the pocket, he failed us, because he couldn’t figure out pocket pressence and read a D good enough.

We failed with him in babying him too much early

Tannehill was never the problem. The talent around him was. He has talent around him now and he is playing at a pro bowl level. Every QB needs talent around him to succeed

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Like the kid, but he was the problem plenty of times. Remember those brain fart INTs? My main problem with him was the slow reads…. was thinking his mind didn’t work fast enough. But maybe the game slowed down for him, especially with — yes — better talent around him.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Stanger Tannehill never really threw that many ints. I always thought his biggest negative was taking a few too many sacks when he could got rid of the ball

    Rhino,

As per your request the other day… this just dropped within the last 30 minutes, dude. Part II of “Najee Harris: Road to the Pros”. I haven’t watched it, but I’m hitting play right after this post goes through…

Quarterback Alex Smith, who completed an inspiring comeback in 2020 after a devastating leg injury, announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday.

Also means one less possible starting QB out there.
