The 2021 NFL Draft – 4 days away!

Once again I stress . . . Quality over quantity. We had plenty of draft capital last year and will continue to have added capital next season and beyond. The important thing, most paramount, is to find players that help this team NOW. I’d rather have 3 or 4 great players in this draft rather than acquiring more picks and lesser talent. We’re close Dolphins fans, I know some of you don’t feel that way but I believe we’re close to being legitimate contenders. Rumors are hot that we may trade up from #18 and I’m fine with that. I’m not worried about who is available at #6, there will be a player there who will help our team, whether it’s Chase, Pitts, Sewell or even Smith.

To me, our greatest needs are WR, pass rusher, RB and center. Those are my 4 top positions. You may feel differently, but that’s how I see it. If we do trade up from #18 I think the chance of drafting Najee Harris goes away, but getting Jovonte Williams later on sure would be a nice consolation. It also may hurt the chances of us getting one of the top centers in the draft, like Creed Humphrey, Landon Dickerson, Josh Myers or Quinn Meinerz. I think we can get one no matter what, we may just lose our choice of which one. I know we have Michael Deiter, but if we had any intentions of having him play C, we don’t pick up Matt Skura. I do think C is a priority.

I think on defense, adding Benardrick McKinney added another rangy tackler. #55 is all over the field making tackles, now he’ll have help with McKinney. AVG grew quite a bit last season, he was very productive, but will additional snaps add to his production or wear him down? Can Vince Biegel become what AVG was last season? I think we will be looking for help early in this draft, as early #18 or even earlier if we trade up.

We’re going to do another FMU Consensus Mock Draft, stay tuned for when it will occur, I would like to have maximum participation. Last year, the crew here was pretty darn accurate, it was pretty impressive! We went 10 for 10 on the first 10 picks, the Jets of course ruined our accuracy. Even if you don’t post often or have never posted here, please join us and watch for the Mock Draft date coming very soon!

GO DOLPHINS!!!

There was almost 11m in cap cost due to Flowers, we paid 6m in bonus WTF paid 3, the other almost 2m was 2021 and 2022 cap count from 2020 signing bonus. We gained a little over 3m on the cap, from just under 7m to just over 10m.

Let the 2020 rookies play in 2021 where you see them in the future playing

  2. steveccnv says:

The cap savings and compensation are a result of this trade, but not the reason why it was made.

It created a hole on the OL, but sometimes to improve at a position you have to subtract first, thats the nature of the salary cap era.

Just like WR, we don’t have to draft RT high, but I expect to see bath taken in the 1st 2 rounds and maybe in the 1st.

Pitts/Chase/Waddle/Smith and Jenkins would be ideal, then RB, Edge, and C to round out our 5 real picks. 5th on isn’t going to help much this year.

Someone will fall, so don’t expect it to go in this order

  3. steveccnv says:

Another reason the U75s are just that.

Here’s a revealing stat from last year to illustrate that point: Ryan Fitzpatrick threw 21 fewer passes than Tagovailoa last season and had way more completions of 30 yards or more (9-3) and 25 yards or longer (15-6).

What this says is that Fitzpatrick was able to complete passes downfield with this so-called deficient receiving corps. That Tagovailoa wasn’t able to do it speaks as much to his reluctance to take chances downfield as it does to the receiving corps itself.

They missed a couple of key facts, Preston was hurt midseason and Parker was banged up at the end.

I agree Tua was reluctant to take chances downfield, but to say Fitz had the same deficient receiving corps isn’t accurate.

Comparing a rookie coming off of an injury to a gunslinging vet doesn’t prove anything going forward or in the past. We saw with our eyes Tua’s deficiencies no reason to throw up some bs stat to prove a point

  4. steveccnv says:

Yesterday my Chargers fan friend from work agreed that Waddle will be the best WR out of this year’s class.

Reason being he’s the closest thing to Tyreek.

An article came out today saying we favor him over Chase, so I know that’s a smokescreen, making him not one of our top 3 receiving targets

  5. steveccnv says:

Fansided has an MTP mock, that’s interesting. Drop down to 9 to take Smith, up to 14 for Parsons, up to 27 for Najee, at 40 via Denver Ossai, up in 3rd for Meinerz.

Give me Waddle at 9 instead of Smith and I’m all in

  6. steveccnv says:

Rumors of cheats moving up to 8, could help us find a trade partner at 6

  7. steveccnv says:

QB going at 4 would be the ultimate for us, either Chase/Pitts or trade back for team wanting the last QB

    • stangerx says:

Yep — #4 is where our first pick turns, maybe even the whole draft. Think how different it will run after we take Chase or Pitts versus Sewell.

    —————-
Love that the common abbreviation for the Washington Football Team is WTF. Think a lot of their fans would agree.

  9. New Age says:

I don’t think Gailey favored Fitz so much as Fitz knew his offense better. I was hoping Gailey could change things up a bit but it’s hard to train old dogs. Fitz had tons of experience as a QB and Tua didn’t. Fitz had played in the Gailey system with success, Tua hadn’t. It’s pretty easy to see why Fitz had more success.

I think the most revealing type of statement is what Arians said about P. Manning. Manning was complaining of tight windows as a rookie and Arians said, ‘Get used to it cause that’s the norm.’ Tua needed time adjusting from Bama windows to NFL windows and he had very little practice to learn that. It’s an incredibly simple reason why a 15 year vet has better vision and can hit the seams easier.

One site stated we had the smallest throwing windows in the NFL That would be tough for any rookie to get past and we know it’s true. To say our WRs were good just because a 15 yr vet could find the seams just isn’t reality. Our guys were constantly injured or well covered. We needed some speed that could catch balls.

Fitz had more success than Tua but I think some forget how little success he had here. 311 502 62.0 3,529 isn’t that good. Neither is 183 267 68.5 2,091 when you spread it over 16 games. Our WRs may not be garbage but they are much closer to that than elite. Pretty terrible WR room to be honest. Quantity over quality right now.

    • stangerx says:

Parker and Williams aren’t terrible , but they are more about vertical separation. But for sure makes them more receivers for Fitz than Tua. Think Bowden might be better for Tua…. and he was actually.

    • steveccnv says:

Tua started against the Rams, then against the Cardinals, where Preston got hurt, then our WRs stunk it up.

With Preston, Parker was good for Tua, not so much after.

Parker without Williams wasn’t all that with Tannehill as his QB either.

The O will be catered to Tua this year, plus having his WRs back will make things much easier.

He still has to take the next step and show us he can win at a high level, so no free pass

  10. steveccnv says:

Pitts/Chase and Jenkins or Sewell and 2nd tier WR?

    • stangerx says:

Figure 1st 3 picks are gonna be edge, OT and something else. Not sure that something else is going to be WR anymore if we don’t get the talent up top. Could be M13’s Harris.

  11. steveccnv says:

Fansided mock has us trading Grant to GB for a mid round pick

Expect to see some WR movement this weekend

  12. The Flying Pig says:

    • stangerx says:

They could still trade down, every team has it’s price. Same time if they pick will be Pitts. Capper on that is the reports that they are trying to trade Julio Jones.

  13. The Flying Pig says:

I just saw nfl network do a feature in Kwitty Paye

And I kind of think he’s going to be a bad ass in the league

  14. The Flying Pig says:

The panthers just traded Teddy Brodgeater to the Broncos

Does that mean Carolina moves up to 4? What about Denver?

  15. steveccnv says:

    Field Yates
    @FieldYates
    ·
    2m
Some details involved for the Teddy Bridgewater trade:

    * Denver will pay Bridgewater $3M while sending Carolina a 6th round pick

    * Carolina will pay Bridgewater $7M and he will count $17M against the cap in dead money

I said 2 years ago he was a game manager

  16. stangerx says:

The Flowers trade got Omar worried he wouldn’t have exciting players to tweet about.
    ———————————————————-
Even though offensive linemen have been this franchise’s safest, and most successful first-round picks going back to 2004, like Grier said during his 2020 end-of-the-season press conference, the Dolphins need “playmakers.”

That’s a pass catcher who can take a quick hitch the distance by juking a defender, Florida’s Kyle Pitts, LSU’s Ja’Marr Chase and Alabama’s DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle all fit that description, and would be excellent choices with the No. 6 pick. And yes, they are in order of preference.

That’s also a tailback who consistently puts the Dolphins offense in second-and-5 or better because he routinely gains more than half the yardage needed for a first down on each carry where a defense doesn’t stack the box. Alabama’s Najee Harris personifies what I want an NFL back to look and play like, and that’s why I wouldn’t hesitate to select him with the 18th pick….

  17. The Flying Pig says:

    Wohoo

Got two major things done so I can relax and participate in our mock tonight and watch the draft

    1. Finished my appellate brief to the appellate division. Doesn’t mean anything to the nonlawyers. But I’ve never argued in the app division before, and it’s the second highest court in NY so it’s stressful

    2. A signed a contract for my new condo in nyc. I’m closing in August. I expect to move in next month (before closing) Woop Woop

  18. Mike E. says:

We’re all guilty if saying reach, which is really dumb. We have no idea where players are rated and they don’t always line up with mock drafts. If they want Najee and take him at #18 and he’s on the team. Wait until 36, he might be on another team. We don’t decide whether it’s a reach or not

    • stangerx says:

I’d love to have Harris on the team. For me at least the big road block ain’t the reach or not reach….. it’s yesterday we learned have a need at OT. And that’s something that very well may be addressed at #18 or #36.

    • The Flying Pig says:

      ‘Reach” is bullshit

I think you can put most of the players from 15-55 or so in a bowl and pick one and take all the same risks

      • steveccnv says:

So positions rankings mean nothing, and we should trade back from 18 and 36 to mid 2nd?

      • The Flying Pig says:

        No Steve

You want to be ahead to take the player you want

But where a player is projected to go can be arbitrary and not mean anything in time

    • steveccnv says:

It’s not about being a reach, it’s which group of players do you want. Take one too soon, you may loose out at another position, when you could’ve satisfied both needs.

Nothing is a guarantee, just have to make an educated guess

  19. Tim Knight says:

A reach is when you have a need and take that position even if that player doesn’t have a high grade and you pass on much higher rated players. It is a real thing. But the way I see the 1st round this year, is there are plenty of good players at different positions to choose from. It’s not always like that.

But if you take a player that is deemed to be a reach by the majority and they play very well for you, it’s not a big deal anymore.

  20. stangerx says:

steve — have no proof for this at all, but have a theory about a team always turning their draft into as many 2nd and 3rd round picks as they can. Think over time it would work.

    • steveccnv says:

Depends what’s available at your pick, but should mostly work, if you can finds the Howard’s in the 2nd

      • stangerx says:

Obviously we are stacked, but that would mean at least 7 2nd rounders for us this year.

  21. CavalierKong says:

So when does a reach become a stretch? And is a reach around the same thing as a stretch around, or does one of those involve dwarves and cornstarch? And who decides these things?

  22. Tim Knight says:

There are usually prospects that are considered lock top 7 or so and then it starts to even out and you take what you want. But there are reaches like taking a LB in the 2nd round to play STs who had a 4th or 5th round grade. Can you name that player?

  23. stangerx says:

Man did the Texans get screwed. Least Tunsil is playing well.
    —————————
“The Texans’ plan was to get the most serious teams into a bidding war before general manager Nick Caserio — with [CEO] Cal McNair’s approval — accepted the best offer…”

“the Dolphins, Jets, Panthers, Broncos, 49ers, Patriots, Bears and Washington were all interested in a deal for Watson. The Dolphins were prepared to part with Tua Tagovailoa and the No. 3 pick that they instead dealt to the San Francisco 49ers. And that was just a starting point.”

  24. The Flying Pig says:

  25. steveccnv says:

To save a half hour on our draft tonight copy and paste this post with your 1st 3 picks on it, since we all know picks 1 and 2 are formalities.

    Lawrence
    Wilson
    Lance

  26. steveccnv says:

SF fans to revolt, if they take Mac Jones at 3, after giving up 2 additional 1sts and a 3rd, when they could’ve had him later

    • The Flying Pig says:

That’s what they are saying on nfl network

The fact that they are passing on Fields after the trade up is odd

    • stangerx says:

Think most of the San Fran fans will be paying attention to their shiny new QB. If we took Herbert would be sending him death threats cause didn’t get Tua?

  27. steveccnv says:

Let’s see how many mistakes on the lake take place tomorrow

  28. Tim Knight says:

How are we doing this mock tonight? We each pick for team or we each pick who we think each team will pick?

  29. steveccnv says:

Atlanta is on the clock at 4, if they trade out or don’t, who do you think goes #4?

    Pick 4 – Fields

    • Tim Knight says:

The first 5 picks set the tone for the rest of the 1st round because nobody really knows who goes where yet outside of the top 2. The QBs could create trades so that leaves other positions all over the place.

As for ATL do they really need to get their eventual replacement for Matt Ryan this year?

      • steveccnv says:

No, I think they’ll trade down and that team will take Fields

      • stangerx says:

Our mock may not be as good as last year cause no trades involved. Might end up not taking QB trade-ups into account. So Phins should take Sewell or Chase.

      • Tim Knight says:

They could stay put and take Pitts as well.

  30. steveccnv says:

I’ll see you guys at 9pm🤪

    Lawrence
    Wilson
    Lance
    Fields
    Sewell
    Pitts

  31. New Age says:

I like Steve’s draft so much I’m copying it

  32. The Flying Pig says:

    Mike

    If you are out there

We have to assign draft picks to people

I have an idea to do it randomly at start of draft

    • stangerx says:

Think us voting as a group on each pick much more fun. You are involved on each one.

    • Tim Knight says:

I thought we weren’t doing it like that. We each pick who a team will pick and the majority is the pick. That’s how we did it last year.

  33. ocalarob says:

well it doesn’t look good for my 2nd covid shot friday morning

    • stangerx says:

why not? Had mine yesterday and survived just fine. Place I went doesn’t even ask for appointments any more.

      • ocalarob says:

Tested positive today, first symptoms last friday, had a rough day sunday and monday, called for a test today, came back positive, last night was the worst! hoping tonight is better.

      • stangerx says:

AHHH Shiot ORob. But you will make it man, least the chances otherwise are really low. Get all the info you can.

      • ocalarob says:

I have from my doctor, zinc, D3, vitamin C, lots of water & gatoraide.

  34. ocalarob says:

If i don’t make it, it’s been an honor to talk football with you guys over the years.

    • stangerx says:

      WTF??… something wrong?

      • ocalarob says:

last night i was very cold, had 2 blankets on me, my house was about 75 degrees, i got up to get a drink, was shaking so bad uncontrollably i spilt the water!

feel better today but i fear the night now!

      • stangerx says:

Talk to your doc and hit the internet. Make sure you try and get the medicines available even if don’t feel like you have to go to the hospital.

      • ocalarob says:

I’m getting different advice, some tell me to take zithromax, an antibiotic, some say no, dont take that as it will weaken your immune system and only works on bacteria.

i just think i’ll play it safe and stick to the vitamins, if it gets worse i’ll seek help.

      • stangerx says:

Last thing I am is a doctor…. but Trump sure knew what he wanted. Just don’t be proud and hesitate to go to the hospital.

  35. ocalarob says:

worked all day monday, on tuesday i worked then went and played golf, i think all that activity made me weaker, today i took it easy.

  36. Tim Knight says:

ORob, hang in there and get better. Wishing you well.

  37. ocalarob says:

I’ll be out of the woods monday

  38. CavalierKong says:

I’m thinking it isn’t COVID, I’m betting it’s the Tagovailoa family curse. 😉

Positive vibes being sent out to ya from the west coast, Rob.

  39. New Age says:

    ORob,

Zithromax won’t do shit for you so good call. Vitamins are usually the biggest help especially Vit D. Stay hydrated, sleep a lot, and as long as you don’t start having issues breathing, or chest pains, you should be fine. It’s not fun but I agree with you, by Monday you should be able to say you kicked it’s ass.

  40. The Flying Pig says:

    Feel better ORob
    Take care of yourself

  41. son of a son of a shula says:

    Someone having vaginal pains?

  42. son of a son of a shula says:

Yes as a matter of fact I did make bacon 🥓 in the air fryer. Best way ever.

  43. son of a son of a shula says:

    I’m a vaccinated man

  44. The Flying Pig says:

Stranger and Tim. Yeah I forgot we voted last year. I think that’s the way to go. I just forgot….lol

  45. son of a son of a shula says:

    Pitts then Parsons then Harris
That would be a ridiculous draft and it’s quite realistic

    • Tim Knight says:

That would be sick but it might need some maneuvering to pull it off.

      • son of a son of a shula says:

Maneuver away then. Getting those 3 would be way better for us than getting 7 “ordinary “ guys. Got plenty of ammo and you could say those are probably the three most dynamic players in the entire draft Lawrence not withstanding.

      • Tim Knight says:

Oh I agree, I’m all about a few premium in this draft than a bunch. The passing game gets better, the running game gets better and the defense gets better. BOOM!!!

I think it might make M13’s head explode though. LOL

  46. ocalarob says:

thanks for all the well wishes guys

  47. Tim Knight says:

So now the NFLN pundits seem to think that 2 of the 5 QBs will fall into the teens.

  48. The Flying Pig says:

Take a minute to enjoy CeeDee Lamb protecting his secrets at the same time of being drafted this time last year

  49. stangerx says:

My advice on the mock draft is just skip the first two picks

  50. Tim Knight says:

Who knows what if the Jets take a different QB than Zach Wilson?

  51. Mike E. says:

Do you guys and gals prefer 8PM or 8:30PM?

  52. marinofan13 says:

ORob, get well soon, my Bro. Rest up for the next water skiing trip, ya know?!! You should be fine, just make sure you follow the good doctor’s orders and don’t hesitate to seek immediate medical attention if your condition would suddenly worsen. Prayers up for a speedy recovery, my man… you’ve got this!

  53. son of a son of a shula says:

Piggs, whoop ass in that higher court man, our little piglet is becoming a hog. It’s a beautiful thing. 🐽💪🐬

  54. CavalierKong says:

I can’t make the draft so I’ll just throw my thoughts out for the top 6 so I can have it on record in case the sun shines on my ass.

I think Atl can’t find a partner to trade with, and actually no one else in the top 9 trades down. This will make our GM look like a genius for beating other teams to the punch and getting comp to move 3 spots.

    3- Lance
    4- Pitts
    5- Chase
    6- Parsons

    • CavalierKong says:

I think NE doesn’t have to move all the way to 8 to get their QB. Possibly 9-12 range instead. I’m hoping not Denver so I can be right on no move downs in the top 9.

    • CavalierKong says:

I think Parsons because of the way 4 and 5 drop. If Pitts or chase are there, I think we take one of them.

    • Tim Knight says:

I love #6 because it makes sense and I would love to see some of the pundits lose their minds because they’re so all about offense. Parsons makes our defense more dangerous and if you can’t score, you can’t win. This guy can be a multiple nightmare. Where is he, who’s blocking him?

      NT Davis
      DE Wilkins
      DE Ogbah
      LB Van Ginkel
      LB Baker
      LB McKinney
      LB Parsons
      CB Howard
      CB Jones
      SS Rowe
      FS McCain

We’re adding two upgrades to a group that already knows the system. Then there are the role players.

  55. Mike E. says:

Rob – Feel better bud, what you described is exactly how I felt the day I got vaccine shot #2.

Don’t you dare weasel out on the next Fest. I’m going to accuse you of Peladophobia!

  56. Mike E. says:

    10 minutes folks!!

  57. Mike E. says:

3 minutes! Y’all can head over to the new blog now.
