11 days and counting . . . THE 2021 NFL DRAFT

Less than 2 weeks away, and the closer it gets, the crazier it becomes. I’m willing to eat some crow here if I’m wrong, but those of you fawning over Micah Parsons or any other defender for that matter, are barking up the wrong tree. I mean no disrespect, but no matter how good our defense is, if we don’t surround our QB with premium weapons, why would you expect the offense to be premium? Let’s face it, the NFL is an offensive league, and the Kansas City Chiefs have proven that to be the case by making back to Super Bowl appearances, winning last year in 2020 but losing to the offensive powerhouse Tampa Bay Buccaneers in this past Super Bowl. Did TB have the better defense? Yes, but their defense was a compliment to their own high powered offense. The TB offense put up 492 points (#3 in the NFL) and allowed 355 points (8th in the NFL). The Miami Dolphins on the other hand were #15 in the NFL on offense, and to be fair, a lot of that was a decline in the offense after Tua took over for Fitzpatrick. The Dolphins averaged 26.6 points with Fitz at the helm and only managed 24.4 with Tua, including a couple of relief appearances by Fitz which helped that average. On defense, the Dolphins were #6 for points allowed at 21.1 PPG. My point is, if you think we’re taking a LB at #6, THINK AGAIN!!!

The Dolphins have to improve this offense and that could be done a few different ways. I’ve made it clear and will continue to reiterate that our WR corps is shaky at best. The top 3 are all health question marks, Parker, Fuller and Williams. The next 3, depending on what order you believe the depth chart is would be Bowden, Hurns and Wilson. The latter 2 haven’t played in over a year and were both recovering from serious injuries, Wilson with that terrible hip injury which he seemed to have finally shaken off by his last season’s end and Hurns who suffered a gruesome ankle injury with the Cowboys in January of ’19. Add Jakeem (No Hands) Grant and Malcolm Perry, Mack Hollins and Robert Foster and I’m sorry but you just can’t expect Tua to improve with this crew. No, they need TOP SHELF talent, and being at 6, we will get it. One of the following players will be there, Chase, Pitts or Smith. I had dismissed Smith for a while because once we acquired another WR who can’t stay on the field, my thought was the last thing we need is a 170 pound WR at #6, but there is familiarity and a super high level of talent there, and in spite of his smallish stature, he knows how to stay on the field and is a superior route runner who gets separation. I still believe if Chase or Pitts is there, we will go with one of those guys but if the Falcons don’t take a QB and the Bengals don’t go OL , potentially Pitts and Chase could go respectively.

While the O-line was much improved, from terrible to average, it’s not yet become a force. I think it’s pretty clear that both Solomon Kindley and Robert Hunt are our guards for the foreseeable future, and Austin Jackson is one of the bookends, most likely our LT. Penei Sewell could be that bookend that really pulls things together. I think the way we handled the center position in FA leads me to believe we’re going to draft a center, which would mean a 2nd or 3rd RD pick, because the acquisition of former Ravens C Matt Skura was underwhelming. The Ravens are a first class organization, and when they let a guy walk, there’s a reason. Add in the fact that he’s here on a 1YR deal makes me feel like Skura is here to start unless the rookie we draft beats him out or if the rookie isn’t ready to start. Sewell would be an upgrade over swingman Jesse Davis who has been wonderful filling in anywhere and everywhere. Giving Tua more time and confidence that he has ample time makes him a better QB.

I do think one of our first 4 picks will be on a LB/EDGE player, but not at #6, we just have to give Tua a chance here, and nothing we’ve done in the offseason despite a couple of potentially good signings in Will Fuller and Malcolm Brown have really elevated the talent here. Fuller is too often injured and Brown is a committee type RB, not a bell cow back. There are LB’s and tweener LB/EDGE guys that could help at #18 like Jaelan Phillips, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Kwity Paye, Gregory Rousseau, Azeez Ojularia, Jayson Oweh etc. I get the Parsons love, I do, but with the state of our offense, I think that needs to be the focal point for a premier player, just the way I feel. We simply can’t wait to see who’s available at #18, unless we trade up from #18, which is possible, it’s about getting great players that impact the team, not about quantity. Quality over quantity every time, especially where we’re at in the rebuild.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Najee is quite the quirky cat, as I’d heard. That video was interesting. I can tell he’s from the Bay Area, and that’s not a diss at all.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I support the IDEA of black lives mattering… who wouldn’t? But moreover, I support the idea that ALL lives matter.

I applaud Najee for supporting black lives mattering… but the movement/corporation of BLM* is a con-job. JMO

Don’t want to delve into the political realm with my statement above, just wanted to mention that Najee showed leadership in the video above, while he does NOT want to be considered a captain: that’s humility and leading by example.

He reminds me of off-the-field Ricky in many ways… I’m trying to deduce if that’s a good thing or not…

People don’t need to be shareholders in the organization to support the ideas behind it

Most people support the idea and often don’t even know or care of there is an organization

Two men died after a Tesla vehicle crashed into a tree on Saturday night north of Houston. The 2019 Tesla Model S was traveling at a high rate of speed, when it failed to negotiate a curve and went off the roadway, crashing to a tree and bursting into flames.

After the fire was extinguished, authorities located 2 occupants in the vehicle, with one in the front passenger seat while the other was in the back seat of the Tesla.

“We only want to share one thing as you move in hundreds a day. Welcome to Florida, but don’t register to vote and vote the stupid way you did up North, or you’ll get what they got.”

        His quote gives that impression

But Polk County is actually pretty big

On Wikipedia it says they are the 89th highest populated metropolitan area. They actually are kind of closer to purple in our political spectrum than most places in the US. 2020 had 56% Republican and 42% Democrat

He’s just puffing his chest out and playing into generalizations that people believe

There’s a lot of people like me in my state that are happy/satisfied with the way the state they live in is run

The #Dolphins have already made two moves in the NFL Draft and they may not be done yet: Sources say they’ve received calls from teams looking to trade up to No. 6 and it is something they’re considering. Lot of things in play, but Miami could be at it again.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If they wait until they’re on the clock they can see how far they can drop, but if someone like Chicago is calling, that’s a long way to go.

I want a top receiver, and if a qb needy team is calling, making pick 6 the 5th qb to go…

I’d expect a trade up from 18, if we trade back past 18

      That might work

But at 9 you probably miss out on chase or Pitts

If you value Waddle Or Smith the same, it can work

But if you think like I do, 9 is too far unless chase or pitts are already gone at 6

      Fyi

As far as I am concerned there is a big 2 at WR (I’m calling Pitts a WR):
      Chase and Pitts

Then Smith and Waddle are the next tier below them, but still worthy of picks in the upper half for the first round

He really shouldn’t need to shit on other parts of the country to appeal to his own constituents

I didn’t watch any of the videos you posted, the only thing I commented at all was the Polk co sheriff. I live in NY. I know that it’s not the place some people are trying to pretend it is. I don’t know why you think some one who doesn’t live here ignorantly talking about it is a matter of political affiliation. It’s not. It’s just ignorance. That’s not political. These are the nypds own numbers

The crime rate as a whole went down. These are actually low crime rate numbers for a huge city.

Nyc Crime rates as a whole have been relatively low for about 20 years or more now. And in that time we have had republican, democrats and independent mayors

Generally speaking crime rates in cities around the country went up in 2020. That’s not a huge surprise in a bad economy. I really think it’s just not accurate to associate crime rates in cities, which are bound to have more crime than rural areas, with political affiliation. Burglaries increased by 42% (15,463 v. 10,909) and car thefts increased by 67% (9.038 v. 5,422). Through it all, the NYPD has worked to mitigate violence as reflected in a 29% increase (4,253 v. 3,299) in annual gun arrests for 2020 compared with 2019 – including 2,057 gun arrests in the last four months of the year.

The numbers don’t actually support then editorial. The nypd has been campaigning for. Ore money. They do it every year. The annual budget for The 2020 year is voted for in 2019, not in response to the Floyd Incident in the middle of the year.

    Piggy,

I agree that it isn’t a fair comparison and thanks for the data. NYC has definitely done better the past 20 years than a lot of smaller cities. It has definitely had a variety of leaders and their police are top notch guys. Cities like Baltimore, Chicago, and LA wish they had the numbers NY does.

While I agree it isn’t fair, good numbers keeps any sheriff in office I also think that refusing to prosecute lower crimes (in many cities now) is the wrong way to do things. It encourages bad behavior. There are a lot of more liberal policing policies that I don’t think work and I think real evidence bears that out. Grady may be an ass who has the benefit of policing a smaller area but I prefer his policies. Maybe I’ll see that I’m wrong someday.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Chris Grier made a smart move to get Fluker. He is a quality offensive lineman with a lot of starting experience and is consistent. Physical at the point of attack and good at both blocking for the run game and passing game. He can also play right tackle or guard

Stanger, I don’t think we want to trade for Jeudy straight-up, being he was the 2nd WR off the board last year. But if the Broncos want to trade up for a QB, we should be able to pry him away.

Could we get a 2nd rounder in the deal? Possibly. But I’d say a 3rd rounder ensures it.

    —————-
Trade value is relevant to the trading team and the receiver of the trade. It’s difficult to tell with the Broncos, being Elway stepped down as GM and George Paton took his place. Perhaps there’s a new vision in Denver, perhaps not.

ROUGH GUESS, to answer your question… I’d say a late 1st rounder and some change. It depends on how badly Denver wants a QB, and how Denver truly views Jeudy after a year with Drew Lock… it’s really difficult to ascertain at this point.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Some will balk at only getting a 3rd rounder back (I went light to make it happen), some will say “HELL YEAH!”… we just got our WR in Jeudy, reuniting him with Tua! And that opens the door to make other things happen, so as to draft Micah Parsons and Najee before anyone else can.

Value is in the eye of the beholder, see.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Rough guess is all was asking for. Not even another team’s GM could do better. And that estimate makes sense as far as your proposed trade. thanks.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Not a problem, my man. But again, it’s just a rough guess, nothing more. I could be completely OFF on how the new Broncos view Jeudy right now.

Jeudy had a 47.3% catch rate on 110 targets last year. Why in the world would we trade for him? It would take more than a 1st and a 3rd. it would need to be Tunsil-esque.

  54. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Another team that is being talked about as far as trading up for a QB is the Bears, from #20. How much would they have to give up to make you pull the trigger?

We could turn #18 into #10 or #12 and pick up Smith/Waddle or Parsons. Spend a 2nd this year and walk away with firsts in the next two drafts. Has to be considered at least.

I’ve absolutely no idea why athletes say, “iron sharpens iron”… you and I both know better, but it is what it is. It’s a good sign that Najee is training with the likes of AP, a MONSTER.

Jeudy didn’t have a 47.3% catch-rate at Alabama with Tua… what happened? Perhaps it was Drew Lock throwing the passes? New scheme? I dunno, but we could use him, reunited with Tua.

It’s possible the Broncos are already thinking BUST with Jeudy… but maybe not. Buy low and sell high. I say buy low with Jeudy, and we’re going to see magic once again between he and Tua.

IMO i would think we won’t trade back unless the offer is too good to pass up, and i can’t see any team out there that would make that move. i’m positive N.E. won’t, Bellichick doesn’t give up future draft picks like that he acquires them

Denver doesn’t appeal to me either. to move back to 9 you may miss the guy you moved up to #6 to get. and how much compensation is Den willing to give up to move to #6?

I think the reason they went back to #6 is for a player, and that player is Smith.

he’s very elusive, we don’t have that type of rec, we have Parker or williams who’s more of the chase mold, we also have Gesicki, why would we want Pitts?

Smith also has history with Tua

Smith ck’s too many boxes, i think he’ll be the pick @6

If we get a really good offer I think we do trade back. How far no idea, but I can see it happening. We’re not trading for 5th through 7th, it’s more premium picks.

We would want Pitts because he’s a kick ass WR, a seam threat TE, and multi-dimensional player that Flores loves.

      Your blinders are amazing!

I cancelled my subscription to PFF last year. In other words, I wish I could tell y’all what Jeudy’s catch-rate was from Tua at Alabama… I all but GUARANTEE it was above 65%.

Calais Campbell, talking about Greg Rousseau…

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Campbell had the same cons on him. There were a few other guys I can’t think of right now that got the same label and they’ve panned out. I’ll think about it. One thing I’ll say about Rousseau is he seems to have his head on straight and wants to be a great pro. He does not come off to me like DJFuckface who was always wishy washy.

He’s not a pure speed edge rusher, but moving him around with his size and length might work in our multiple scheme. Flores doesn’t build his team around one guy and I think we’re seeing that. It’s about matchups across the board. Stop the other team from scoring and score enough points to win. Football is not that complicated.

Rousseau put up stats in 2019 lining up at NT – 0 technique. Maybe at #18 he gives us a front 7 guy on defense that makes a difference. We talk about moving Parsons as a prospect all around. This is just a different type of player.

it’s very iffy if pitts will even be there at 6, we moved to 6 for a reason, If we were targeting Pitts we wouldve stayed at #3

not sure how much better pitts is than gesicki only time will tell. they both are the same type T.E. long and lengthy,
why would we spend that pick on a guy when we already have guy sufficient in manning that position?
there’s only one ball. we also have similar wrs to chase, the same applies to him.

the elusiveness of smith is what we lack in this offense.

    it’s called common sense.

not that i’m a huge fan of Smith, i just think it’s safe to assume that he’s the odds on favorite to be a miami dolphin at #6

    he’ll be there for sure.
