ROUND 1 – Disappointing . . .

Sorry Dolphins fan, we tried to look awful smart with pre draft maneuvering, making two synchronized trades with the 49ers to move out of #3 and move back to #12, and then the trade with the Eagles to get back up to #6. Did we get the best TE? Nope! Did we get the best WR? Nope! Jaylen Waddle is a good player, but the moves that we made don’t add up to the player we selected. We may have been able to get Waddle at #12. He will help our offense and be the player we hoped Tedd Ginn Jr. was for us. A dynamic return man and a a guy who will take quick hitters and turn them into big plays. He can be like Albert Wilson was for us in 2018 before he got injured. We can go back and forth about where Waddle would have been taken, but being at #6 and ending up with Waddle is deflating. Sorry, it just is. Grier and Flores get no pass.

With pick #18, I’m telling you guys, I knew we were taking Phillips. In our Mock Draft I picked Phillips because I felt he was the player we want here for our defense. I said it again last night. Although I was right, it didn’t make it any easier because I really wanted Najee Harris. We need an upgrade at RB, and if we somehow don’t end up with Javonte Williams, we will have failed again. I feel like we can have 4 picks in the first 2 rounds in every draft and still find a way to fuck it up. Quality over quantity. Right now I feel like we’re just getting quantity.

In our offense, Jaylen Waddle will be featured often. Tua Tagovailoa likes to get rid of the bill quickly and Waddle will be like Julian Edelman was to Tom Brady. He will help our offense. He will upgrade our return game because although Grant is electric, he’s so questionable about actually fielding punts and kick returns. His hands are suspect. Waddle is much more sure handed. I just don’t see a generational talent in him, and 2 guys went before him that definitely might be, Kyle Pitts and Ja’Marr Chase. We were at #3 and could have had either. This is my qualm. Everyone wants more picks, not me, I want great players, and I’m not sure we got ANY last night. We could have, we didn’t!

Jaelan Phillips is a Flores type player. He knows what he’s doing out there. When Grier took Charles Harris because he had a quick step, he did, but he had nothing after that. Phillips is the opposite. He’s a technician with a bevy of pass rush moves and he’s athletic enough to back that up. He’s fast, and he’s strong, and he’s very athletic. 6’5 260 and ran a 4.56 40, 36″ vertical, 10.5 foot broad jump, 4.12 20 yard shuttle, and 21 reps of 225 at his pro day. His Junior season and last season in Miami, he posted 8 sacks and 15.5 TFL in a shortened season. He’s the real deal, and we need the pass rush help, but we lost out on RB Najee Harris.

We got good players, players that will help our team be better next season, but we had a chance at elite. Pitts or Chase could be elite. When all is said and done, Waddle and Phillips might have very good careers, but Pitts and Chase could be HOFers. Time will tell. I try to be fair, I don’t want to be a rah-rah pom pom waving writer. I want to say it like I feel it, so I did. Go get Javonte Williams. IDGAF if we have to trade to pick #33, get him, because we need him!

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

  1. Ken says:

David what happened in Israel was an accidental crush event much like what has happened several times at various European soccer games. It was not state sponsored like actions in North Korea that you tried to equate it too. I mean if you can’t see that oh lord

    • David Collins says:

i do see that, Good Lord, lol

however this event needed to be stopped by the Government, Last year, the Israeli authorities arrested over 300 people at the Lag b’Omer celebration after large crowds gathered in defiance of coronavirus restrictions, ignoring police checkpoints on roads. Some were reported to have thrown stones and other objects at police officers who tried to control the crowd.

its an annual problem. that got much worse this time, and involved the death of US citizens, what should We do about it, ignore the US deaths in a public statement, and let it happen again to more US citizens next year? thats the path Biden chose, and the reason i now hate Biden

  2. David Collins says:

Ken, what should we do in Your opinion , ?

    • Ken says:

Express condolences, let remuneration be handled in civil lawsuits like it is in this country as Israel has a similar civil justice system and have the State Department issue the appropriate travel advisory to those attending the event. I mean what are you advising that we treat Israel like North Korea? I mean Israel is a staunch ally and is one of the few democratic nations in all of the Middle East.

      • David Collins says:

no, and i already explained that twice, just wanted to know Your opinion.

but what would You do for the US citizens that perished, i noticed You left that part of Your answer out, the American victims who seem to have gotten ignored

      • David Collins says:

is biden afraid to mention it? i seriously doubt his manhood at this point

      • Ken says:

David I suggest you reread what I posted. I did not ignore what should be done for deceased Americans. I said quite clearly that should be handled through civil litigation

      • David Collins says:

yes you did say that, but thats it? You dont think the Americans should be publicly mentioned by Biden, and US assistance to the AMerican families? We are aware that the US is providing assistance to israel, the nation that is involved with the US deaths

  3. Ken says:

    David Collins says:

is biden afraid to mention it? i seriously doubt his manhood at this point
    ——————
If you really believe that then I seriously doubt your intelligence

    • David Collins says:

im entitled to My opinion, as are You

    • steveccnv says:

This is a good one, like David bashing Biden😉, if you knew nothing about what is going on in the world this might be a typical response, but have to agree with Ken, because it surely is a political play and not about cajones, as we’ve seen over and over

      • David Collins says:

lol i do like some of Bidens policies, but i also hold him to task for failing to mention the US victims while offering assistance to Israel, the nation who was involved with the victims.
it would have been a good time to see him mention the aid to the US victims families, but for some reason, he either forgot, didnt care, or was afraid, who knows why he failed the nation

  4. ocalarob says:

I’m with David on this Ken, Biden Sucks, quit making excuses for him!

  5. David Collins says:

for the captain obvious, my beef is the US families that have been forgotten, I cant excuse that away, because i love this nation and its citizens, but maybe not all of the citizens, lol

  6. steveccnv says:

Aiight it got back to politics too quick after the draft

  7. Phindog says:

What happened in Israel was a tragedy but it had nothing to do with targeting American citizens. WTF !!!

  8. pheloniusphish says:

Since we’re on politics – Democratic philosophy and policies maintain and create new racism and poverty.

  9. David Collins says:

Ken, i will not insult You because we have a difference of opinion.
i just dont agree with Your idea of letting the US victims fight it out on their own in civil court, while the US provides assistance to the Israeli families

to Me, thats BS to send taxpayer funds overseas and refuse to help AMericans with it

I have a right to say this, because im an American, and a taxpayer also

    • Ken says:

That is exactly how our system of civil justice works. Accidents happen every day and are addressed through the court system. The government does not give aid and assistance to the victims of accidents. You would have a point if this happened in a different with no civil justice system but it didn’t it happened in a country with a very developed and fair system of civil justice. This is not a political issue but one of civil justice

      • David Collins says:

its civil justice to provide US assistance to Israeli families, and ignore Americans?

        i have to disagree

  10. wyoming85 says:

When did we mandate that US Citizens go to a foreign religious event?

I’m pretty sure they were there of their own free will!

Consequences of ones own decisions is a bitch sometimes!

  11. steveccnv says:

Kong, AZ has 4 games left against Kings and Sharks, if they win all 4, which I expect them to STL has to win 3 of final 7 and they play 2 each with Minn and VGK.

It could get tight, if AZ wins the games they should

  12. David Collins says:

Ken, seriously, what would be the problem, if the US provided assistance for Israel families, AND American families also?

why is it so difficult for US taxpayers to get assistance, and its freely doled out to foreign nations? thats a slap in the face to the families in America ; at a really bad time in their lives

thats really all i have to say about it

    • Ken says:

US provided assistance to Israel in the form of vaccination relief in the middle of a pandemic it’s a little different don’t you think?

      • David Collins says:

thats not what this discussion is about, I gave you the direct quote from Biden, where he promises assistance to israel, and condolences, (for this specific religious celebration a couple of days ago), and failed to mention the US victims, or any assistance for them.

that is what i have a problem with, and im certain that is not civil justice, its just wrong, Biden failed the nation IMO, and i want my damn vote back, lol

      • Ken says:

So you want Biden to pay US citizens damages?

      • Ken says:

Essentially you want socialism. You want the government to remedy every wrong?

      • David Collins says:

socialism? never talked about that either, feels like im beating a dead horse, ill break it down in most simplistic terms, and then can we please move on to another subject?

Israel has a religious celebration, many die, including israelians and americans

Biden said condolences to israel, and the US will provide assistance, or what you call socialism, to the Israeli people, who suffered in the disaster.

Biden forgot America, maybe socialism only for foreigners that made the victims.
        David doesnt like that

        the end, lol

  13. Rhino says:

    Steveccnv,
yesterday you used the phrase “he doesn’t know shit from shinola” …

That was my dad’s favorite saying when he knew that he knew more than the guy b.s.ing him. First time I’ve heard (or read) that phrase since he passed 15 years ago.

    Made me smile.

  14. Rockphin says:

Don’t know if any of you have watched “Call of The Wild” but Buck is a Good Dog. LOL

  15. Ken says:

If it makes you feel better David I don’t believe we should be offering assistance to Israeli families

    • Ken says:

However I don’t question the President’s manhood over this

    • David Collins says:

somewhat better, but he did, and he did offer it to them, and not mention help for Americans

the problem is picking out which victims get assistance, and which ones dont, cant cherry pick dead people, and only help the foreign ones, not the Americans, SMH

  16. Rockphin says:

So, how much “better” are we now?

    Round 1 • Pick 6 (6) • WR Jaylen Waddle
    Round 1 • Pick 18 (18) • DE Jaelan Phillips
    Round 2 • Pick 4 (36) • S Jevon Holland
    Round 2 • Pick 10 (42) • OT Liam Eichenberg
    Round 3 • Pick 18 (81) • TE Hunter Long
    Round 7 • Pick 3 (231) • T Larnel Coleman
    Round 7 • Pick 17 (244) • RB Gerrid Doaks

We were young and played a lot of rookie and 2nd year snaps last season and ground out 10 wins with a soft schedule. My hope is that this coaching staff continues to do as it seems to have been doing and coaching the young guys up. I hoping some of that past potential becomes current success.

    • David Collins says:

We are alot better on paper, hate to use that term. but what i mean is , these guys are very young, raw, and covid has dampened much of their time in practices and games.

i hate to say this, but patience may be needed more than ever, even though we hate that word, we prefer NOW

My feeling is these guys are about a half season or so behind in their development, had covid not been a factor. so more seasoning is in order, and they might not set the NFL on fire in their rookie seasons.

our barking puppies will grow into mad dogs, lol but not overnight

    • steveccnv says:

Soft schedule? NFC/AFC West were no slouched

Jets x2 and Jax, what else?

      • Rockphin says:

        8-8 cardinals
        6-10 49rs
        2-14 Jets
        8-8 Raiders
        7-9 chargers
        5-11 broncos
        1-15 Jags
        4-11 Bengals

        Not a viagra schedule

  17. Rhino says:

Holland’s highlight reel … did you all see the KR for a TD. All the DBs will be playing ST as well. Waddle, Iggy, Holland … lots of guys to put back on returns if Grant’s value as WR doesn’t improve. His best chance of sticking with the team is his speed… but that’s Waddle’s game now.

Also, it is clear (and Tim pointed this out way up the board) that the Defense Flores wants is
    1. QB pressure / hurries / sacks if you can get them
    2. excellent man to man coverage (not just one shut down guy, but 3 or 4)
    3. TURNOVERS

He wanted Phillips, he got him. He wanted Holland (over all other available S), he got him.
Like last year we thought Raekwon Davis and Hunt were likely ‘reaches’ but Flores wanted him and Davis played really well and will get better.

This was Flores’ 3rd draft. It looks like he has the D he wanted (probably would like more depth on DL and LB). J.O.K. was apparently NOT the LB type cuz he wants Safeties to do that coverage.

Next year’s draft we can expect probably another offensive impact player and then it’s about ‘replacement’ of expiring contracts every draft moving forward… build through draft, stay competitive through the draft.

  18. wyoming85 says:

    • Rhino says:

Good to see you posting WYO. You were a source of a lot of great info in all the months before the draft. No computer access at work sucks, but glad you got work! Covid caused a lot of chaos. We’ve lost 3/4s of our staff, not because of layoffs but because of burnout/stress of working in medical facility in full PPE every day for a year.

  19. wyoming85 says:

  20. Rockphin says:

    • steveccnv says:

We’ll give him every chance to make it, it’s up to him to put in the work

    • David Collins says:

im hoping with improved OL play , that Doaks will do ok

he may not be another Barry Sanders, but we dont need that, we need a back that can move the chains , block, and catch a few passes during the game

  21. Rockphin says:

    3.36 after contact.

Late pick, but think ORob has a new favorite Dolphin. 😉

  22. steveccnv says:

When we view other team’s drafts we just look at the players they got.

When we view our team’s draft it’s, we could’ve gotten more value at 6, 18 has medical issues, 36 could’ve been taken at 50 and 42 at 36, we should’ve drafted C instead of TE, we should’ve traded up for Williams…

Not that all the shoulda, woulda…are out of the way let’s just look at who we drafted and how the team now looks

    • David Collins says:

lol post of the day nominee

    • Rhino says:

agreed. and I think Flores has the starting 11 on D that can really do what he envisions. Phillips doesn’t need a ton of sacks because his high % of “hurries” serves the same purpose.

      • steveccnv says:

Starting on D applies to who is playing CB, Nickel and S, the front 7 will be package based, so all front 7 players will play an important role.

Flores has all the guys on D he needs this year, knock on wood

  23. David Collins says:

taking a cue from Steves post, i have thought about what it will be like if Waddle, Phillips, and the others realize their upsides

Waddle, OMG, i could see him scoring double digit TD,s annually, and Phillips wrecking havoc on AFC east QB, and non division QB also

the slots and screens that have killed us in the past, Now we have a duck sitting on that shit, and he will make some awesome plays, third down stops and turnovers.

the Fins traded up to get an OL , so they must believe in him

Long will be good, but rarely used until next season IMO

and Doaks is the wild card, he either sticks like Gaskins did, or he becomes another back to come and go

  24. Rockphin says:

I can’t wait to pick my UDFA to root for this year. LOL Every year a pick one.

    The Unicorn is still here!

  25. steveccnv says:

I don’t put much into UDFAs, only once they make the team and contribute.

UDFAs making your team usually means lack of depth, but once in a while a Preston Williams shows up that has red flags, but NFL talent

    • David Collins says:

agreed, also WIlliams shined in the senior bowl, and showed he was worth a look see

im not sure we have a UDFA like him this year, that was luck also

  26. steveccnv says:

Center and RB seem to be the only positions we neglected, unless Doaks pans out, and he can, that’s why 1st round RBs get a bad rap

    • David Collins says:

we cant rule out that Eichenberg wont play some center at some point, but we do need a Center if hes not it

    • stangerx says:

Btwn the two NE signed and the one we did, one thing I learned this off season is you can get centers cheap.

  27. steveccnv says:

Watching a video of who is the best S prospect for this draft, he ruled out Holland, because he considers him a CB.

There you go, Flores said he likes his S to be DBs, that’s why Holland was the pick

  28. stangerx says:

What did I learn today?…… we never went to war with Spain cause of what happens in Pamplona each year cause our Presidents have no cajones.

    • David Collins says:

sure, go ahead and make fun of the dead Americans, SMH

      that sucks

      • Ken says:

I don’t think it’s dead Americans Stanger is making fun of

      • David Collins says:

making jokes and piss poor analogies about this tragedy is not cool at all, the bodies are still in route back home, some people care to help them, and not make a comedy hour out of their loss
and some people want to help the israelis only, and not help the Americans, like biden

it is what it is, but it cant be justified IMO

    • David Collins says:

those are not US victims either, Piss poor analogy, that ignores the US fatalities and their families, i would expect better

im done discussing US families ,with people that dont give a shit about Americans, change the subject

      • stangerx says:

It is a foreign event that many Americans have been injured in over the decades….. going back to the time of Hemingway. Why is it a “piss poor analogy”? Yes a better one would be a say hotel fire, but the pics for that wouldn’t be as good.

  29. The Flying Pig says:

This guy doaks seems to have good hands

  30. wyoming85 says:

    • stangerx says:

He’s psyched as anything. We’ll never know, but wonder what his reaction would have been to Smith?

  31. bailbondmike says:

Maybe this was another reason they got Doaks. Posted on day 2 of draft.

  33. Ken says:

Doaks is our new Matt Roth

  34. stangerx says:

Eichenberg allowed three sacks in his first five starts, and then none the rest of his career (38 starts).

“Concerns about athleticism and upside, though, played into his projection as a probable second-round pick and likely right tackle in the NFL.” Same time he played LT his whole college career. Matches well if he’s our RT protecting Tua’s blindside.

What this nonsensical anti-Israel sentiment I’m reading? We have a strong ally in Israel in a region where we have no friends. It’s a synergistic relationship that benefits us both. If you don’t comprehend the importance of Israel and our relationship, maybe you should read up on it so you do.

  38. bailbondmike says:

Man, can’t find reliable info on UDFA’s. NFL.com shows us signing none. Another shows 2. Another shows 4. Another shows 2.

  39. Mike E. says:

I think Doaks will have a hard time making the 53 cut. Hope I’m wrong though. Nothing wrong with finding late RD gems, I just wish we would stop putting off RB as if it doesn’t matter.

  40. Mike E. says:

Ken – That’s the issue for me. I really think RB was a clear need for our roster. I hate that the guy we finally got is either a back end of the roster guy or maybe a PS candidate. We’re a now team, we should have a legit weapon at RB now.

    • Ken says:

I think you will see him in the rotation. BBM is right Laird is the odd man out. Gaskins was a 7th round pick and he is very productive. If Doak can contribute any where near that we will be fine

  41. bailbondmike says:

I am seeing the signing on one site of Alabama TE/HB Carl Tucker. I remembered him from UNC. Realized he was a grad transfer to Alabama and only used for blocking assignments there. His career at UNC was basically the same. Only 36 rec in 4 years, BUT, dude is a blocking machine.
At 6’2 250 he bulldozes people. I can see him possibly make PS.

  43. New Age says:

    Mike E,

I wish we had gotten the bell-cows too but Flores is right. First priority is passing and taking away passing in a passing league. Our first round guys were needs and Javonte wasn’t a need compared to other spots later. Only so many picks to go around.

  44. stangerx says:

Bobby McCain long as he has been here is just 27.
We drafted Brandon Jones in the 3rd last year.
We just drafted Jevon Holland top of the 2nd.
Eric Rowe is only 28 and signed for 2 more years (even if could cut him).

I was thinking drafting Holland might mean McCain is cut….. but could we just put him back at slot corner. He was a pretty good one.

  45. Rockphin says:

  46. Rockphin says:

    Grier on Doaks

“He plays on special teams as well, so he’s a team guy and just kind of working through that process and talking to the coaching staff there and stuff, this kid was a very high-character player that loves football. He’s smart. Again, we’re excited to get him. He’s a big back that plays hard, he’s tough, he’s team-oriented and he’s a smart player.”

  47. Ken says:

I always crack up when I see draft grades now. None of these guys have even put on pads for a pro practice yet

Perhaps we saw more opportunity to pick up a vet on the cheap, maybe a 1 year for them to hit FA again, meaning they will be all out for us and we just delayed the position in the draft until next year?
