Dolphins news, roster moves

After drafting Safety Jevon Holland with the 36th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, that may have just sealed Bobby McCain’s fate as a Miami Dolphins player. Good Ole Bobby McCain spent the last 6 years with the Dolphins as a defensive back playing CB outside, quite a bit inside in the slot, and both safety spots, FS and SS. I always liked Bobby McCain but he doesn’t fir the Flores prototype, at 5’11, which I believe may be generous. I always defended him here, he played with a bad shoulder and always gave his all, so I appreciate what he did on the field for our team, even it wasn’t always top notch play.

After releasing Bobby McCain, Brian Flores plucked another familiar face off the FA scrapheap in former Patriots S Jason McCourty. McCourty will be 34 years old at the start of the 2021 season, so I’m not sure how much playing time he will get, but he’s a consummate professional who knows how to play the game, and his position. Jevon Holland can learn much from his professionalism and pick his brain so to speak. McCourty is a 12 year veteran who played 8 years with the Tennessee Titans who drafted him in the 6th RD of the 2009 Draft. He then played 1 season with the Cleveland Browns and the last 3 with the New England Patriots.

    steve,
And how is that any different than…ever? Every team wants to be able to run when you want to run. That has always been the goal…again…the question is how. And again….if you can’t run for at least 4 yards…then it’s really not all that helpful. I don’t mind trying to stick with a running game if it’s not working early in the game, but if you’re not getting into 2nd and 6 or less you’re screwing yourself….and it can be awful hard to keep up in the scoring that way. We definitely need to upgrade our running game, so I’m all for whatever they do to get better.

Piggy, Even though I hydrated big time I still got overheated and chills the same night and day after. Hopefully you don’t experience this but from what I’ve heard it’s common after the 2nd shot.

From what I read and saw with the better one, if it is gonna hit does so about 12 hours after the shot. So my advice is not to go out celebrating your 2nd shot tonight until you know one way or the other. Did that with my wife…… was a mistake. She was one of the say every three that got it.

        I’m staying home tonight

  8. CavalierKong says:

Rob, sorry bud, I can’t find a way to get the run/pass splits for players on the field.

We had 559 pass attempts and 428 rushing attempts. Gesicki was involved in 58% of our offensive plays (572), but no idea on the splits.

  9. David Collins says:

I think many knew before Gesicki was drafted, that he was a poor blocker, but a TE that can beat safeties and linebackers with the passing game.

here is his scouting profile, before the Dolphins drafted him from NFL.com

If you are looking for a tight end who can line up and help in the running game, he’s not your guy. However, if you want a pass-catcher who can get open and has the ball skills to win against linebackers and safeties, he might be your guy. Gesicki needs to improve his play strength and his issues as a blocker could limit the amount of teams who will target him, but he has a chance to become one of the better pass catching tight ends in the league.

  10. David Collins says:

Tawny Kittaen was also in a movie called Batchelor Party with Tom Hanks.

here is a description of this classic movie
Party animal Rick Gassko (Tom Hanks), who makes his living as a Catholic-school bus driver, decides to settle down and marry his girlfriend Debbie Thompson (Tawny Kitaen). After learning the news of the engagement, Rick’s shocked friends, led by Jay (Adrian Zmed), decide to throw him an epic bachelor party. The bride’s wealthy, conservative parents are unhappy with her decision, and her father enlists the help of Debbie’s ex-boyfriend Cole Whittier (Robert Prescott) to sabotage her relationship with Rick and win her back.

While Debbie worries and goes off to a bridal shower thrown by her friends, Rick heads to the bachelor party, which takes place in a lavish, spacious hotel suite, and promises to remain faithful. Both parties start off on the wrong foot because of Cole’s meddling. As the bachelor party starts to heat up, Debbie and the girls decide to get even with Rick and his friends by having a party of their own. Both parties eventually collide, leading to Debbie accusing Rick of infidelity.

The bachelor party becomes a wild, drunken orgy and the hotel room is trashed,,,,

SB – of the highest order

  12. Randy says:

You don’t use guys like Gesicki as an in-line blocker very much. You use him to move LBers or Safeties out of the box or to one side or another. That’s how he impacts your running game. And, if teams choose not to move players around to cover him, you throw it to him.
    ***
I’m not even a fan of Gesicki. I wanted to draft the guy who went to Baltimore but that doesn’t mean a guy like Gesicki can’t be very effective. If he ends up balling out and wanting huge money…then you have a decision to make. That’s the way it is with every player.

    • The Flying Pig says:

      Oink and agreed

I don’t get why we need to consider Geiscki’s worth now

Next offseason I think it’s worth discussing his value to the team and whether we resign him or not

If we let him go we get a comp pick down the line

    • stangerx says:

We all admire good blocking, but taking a guy out of the play without touching him seems to at least come with less CTE risk.

And yeah Gesicki is like every other player in a contract year, but one who has a lot of love on this board. Like Najee Harris before the draft.

      • steveccnv says:

If we had drafted Najee at 18 it would’ve been our worst reach in franchise history, you don’t draft a tall RB that high.

He’s a good all around RB on a great team, but just above average otherwise, when he can’t overpower NFL players he’ll be JAG

      • stangerx says:

But the Najee love was undeniable. And not sure how much of a reach would have been. He did go at #24.

But point was Gesicki has that same kind of fan passion. I like him too.

  13. stangerx says:

    Somewhere OD is unhappy. 🙂
    —————–
“The past decade has provided quite the return on investment for Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross. Ross, who bought the team in 2008, originally paid $1.1 billion to call the Miami Dolphins his. And today, according to Forbes, the Miami Dolphins have nearly tripled in value — they’re listed at a $2.9 billion evaluation for the 2021 year.”

  14. The Flying Pig says:

    Steve

Of course its not automatic, but when you lose free agents and don’t spend in free agency you usually get comp picks

I dont think there is any misconception – there’s obviously a formula and if for some reason we spend too much in free agency it will deprive us of comp picks

But the best way to avoid spending in free agency is to keep the player you drafted that work out well longer

The ravens and the Patriots used that model to get comp picks year after year

We don’t need to trade guys to get value bc they are a year away from Free agency

It’s bad enough that the modern nfl requires most teams to churn their roster every 5 years, but if you decrease that cycle to every 4 years, you are gonna end up spending more in free agency

I’m personally not a a huge fan of team building where we start trading guys bc they are free agents in another year. Squeezing a 5th year out of a productive players rookie contract can make a difference on the field and help win more games

  15. ocalarob says:

When you are in 1st and 10 and running the ball, the play developers quickly. You need your te to block. There’s no time for him to clear out dba going out for a pass.

    • stangerx says:

If Gesicki is 4 or 5 yards off the tackle does the other team leave him uncovered? He only lines up on the T about 20% of the time.

      • ocalarob says:

by that time the D knows it’s a pass, the play develops too quickly for a TE to draw dbs out of the box, and by having Gesicki in the game the D is in pass pro anyway as we don’t run with him in the game, i think 80 percent of the plays are pass with him in the game. or so i read.

      • ocalarob says:

he gives away our position, they know we’re passing which makes it very difficult.

      • ocalarob says:

if you’re in 3rd and 9 then it doesn’t matter, bring on gesicki, when you’re trying to establish a run game early you don’t want him in the game. he’s a blocking liability.

  16. ocalarob says:

when you have a great blocking/catching TE and a powerful running game, that’s where play action comes in, you then fake it to the RB and hit your TE as the D is up trying to stop your powerful run game.

when you have a TE in the game who struggles blocking all that goes out the window. they know you won’t run the ball, makes play action less effective.

  17. ocalarob says:

it all adds up, you have a weak blocking T.E. that telegraphs the play, he’s set to be an UFA and you just used your #81 pick on a guy that can catch and block.

the writing is on the wall.

    Gesicki is history.

do you actually think they will give Gesicki a huge contract?

    ————–
If a db or LB wasn’t drawn out of the box by Gesicki sliding out wide….. that means he’s uncovered. Just throw it to him. Know you want to run it, but guaranteed positive play.

    • ocalarob says:

that’s not a reality, a good DC will have all recs covered, as soon as the ball is handed off they will converge on the RB.

It’s just not logical to think you could line gesicki up and send him out for a pass taking a DB with him to open up running lanes, that’s the issue.

the running play happens too fast to achieve that

    —————–
Sorry for omitting the majority of your above post (which I absolutely agree with), but we’re talking about Gesicki, correct? That 5th year option can only happen for 1st rounders, and Gesicki was a 2nd rounder. Just an FYI, in case ya didn’t know.

Aside from that, I’m with ya 100%.

  20. bailbondmike says:

If anyone thinks we drafted TE Hunter Long to replace Gesicki, you are sadly mistaken,IMO. I have watched a little game tape on him and not that impressed. His route running is terrible. He rounds into all his breaks and has no juke or acceleration out of his breaks. This makes it easy for LB’s to cover him, forget it if a DB is covering him.

He does not have the athleticism to be half of what Gesicki is. He can’t highpoint a ball very much. I don’t see him being an upgrade over Sheehan or Smythe, just see him as a future replacement for one of the two.

Blocking, yeah, he is decent at that but will have to see how he handles it on the NFL level.

I just don’t see where everyone says he is such a great talent over what we already have.

After watching his tape vs UNC, I started to get upset again that we took him at #81 instead another Edge or RB.

    • Marinofan13 says:

What you just said above echoes my opinion 100%. I said it the other day that I am NOT impressed by Hunter Long.

  21. ocalarob says:

They had Long at the senior bowl obviously they seen something about him they liked.

i’m just speculating about moving on from Gesicki, he may turn into this all around TE, lead us to the SB!

Due to all the tea leaves,
if my money’s on the line,,,,,,, i would bet against him being on the team in 2022.

    • Marinofan13 says:

I understand where you’re coming from and I respect that, as always, man! I just merely disagree. We’ll see!

      • Marinofan13 says:

  22. Marinofan13 says:

    BBMike,

It kills me to think we took Hunter Long over Quinn Meinerz and Wyatt Davis. And Randy’s and my guy Chauncey Golston was still on the board, too.

  23. Marinofan13 says:

TO BE CLEAR… I think our Phins did an outstanding overall job in the ’21 Draft(!), but I’m still scratching my head over the selection of Hunter Long. Time shall reveal if he was worth it…

  24. Randy says:

First down is no different than any other down. They develop as you design them to develop. You can motion your TE to manipulate the defense pre-snap, and teams do it all the time. I wasn’t necessarily talking about when the ball is snapped….although teams use receivers to run routes and take defenders away from the LOS all the time. If a defender doesn’t follow your TE then you know they’re playing some type of zone, and you can manipulate or react to that. This is basic stuff. Even just lining one of your TEs inline and then flexing him out can manipulate a defense and create running lanes….or identify a mismatch you can manipulate whether that happens right away, or you set defenses up for something later. It also just gives you information on how they are going to play certain formations, motion and down and distance.

    • Marinofan13 says:

“This is basic stuff”. Indeed it is: it’s football 101 on the Offensive side of the ball. And that’s why Mike Gesicki is so very dangerous (mismatch nightmare). He may not be quite as talented as Kyle Pitts (who is?), but he helps the QB with what he’s able to do pre-snap, alone.

He’s not a liability, he’s reliability… and that’s before the QB even says HIKE.

    • Marinofan13 says:

By the way, Randy… excellent post, bud!

  25. New Age says:

Not to say I’m bored with the engrossing TE discussions but anyone else notice the inflation starting to jack up now? I have a friend whose car has increased in value by $1000 in the past 3 months. That’s only good news for a very select few. Corona bucks were nice but what are we going to do now that everything will cost a LOT more?

    ___________________________________________

The thought has never crossed my mind, you have a right to your football opinion as do all.

  31. ocalarob says:

what happens on first and 10 in an NFL game is a powerful indicator of who will win.

  32. ocalarob says:

When it comes to first down, the magic number is four yards.

  33. ocalarob says:

if a T.E goes in motion and a DB follows him you lose an offensive blocker on a run play whereas the DB that followed him will have an eye on the backfield and be able to react to the running play as it happens very quickly.

there’s a reason why gesicki plays most of his snaps on passing downs, they don’t want him in there in a run situation due to his lack of blocking ability.

  34. ocalarob says:

lack of success on first downs will force you to connect on long passes on other downs. your offense is then predictable.

first down and 10 is the most important down, on avg 2nd and 6, you can run or pass,

    you become unpredictable

    • ocalarob says:

this is why having huge OL, and a powerful RB is essential to winning.
i believe that is why flores has manned this team appropriately.
power inside and speed on the edges.

having a T.E. that when he’s in the game you pass 80% of the time is not being unpredictable and not conducive to winning.

when gase traded ajayi he also traded his job because we no longer had that power running game, we became predictable.

  35. David Collins says:

inflation has been in play since last year, gas is not really a big part of it, gas is chump change

its lumber, steel, copper, everything I need to build a damn house has TRIPLED in 12 months, im not real happy about it, im considering delaying construction till costs come down, but i really cant because its a flip property for my own homebuild.

i cant say hyper inflation is around the corner , if costs have already tripled in 2020 and 2021

, but these same commodities are expected to drop soon, its all a big bubble because of pent up demand. and investors are sitting on tons of cash and wanting to spend it now

my realtor says when she lists a home, she gets a dozen cash offers on the first day, there is NO inventory in FL

  36. David Collins says:

homes cost about $40000 more to build than they did in 2019, maybe that is why its hard to find sympathy for folks whining about gas costing a quarter more, when oil/gas is controlled by foreign enemies of the US

even concrete is rocketing, the demand has to abate before the prices will drop

  37. David Collins says:

the best way to handle the gas increases, is to stop buying it from our enemies

its not even necessary with alternative energy available

but housing is always needed, unless we like living in the woods

  38. David Collins says:

my friend in melbourne said his rent is now 1750 a month,
for a small 2 bedroom and 1 bath shithole

those same apartments were going for $600 a month in 2008, i dont know how anyone can afford to live like that, FL wages are pitiful

  39. David Collins says:

the US had its second best quarter ever, for the first quarter of 2021
GDP shot up, and unemployment dropped
investors are cash heavy, the US is still the weathiest nation in the world, just doesnt look like it if Your name isnt elon musk, bill gates, etc

these gains in productivity, are catalysts for inflation, the only way to stop inflation at this point, is if we go backwards, shut down companies, people lose their jobs, and we go back to sitting at home doing nothing, while businesses have their closed signs out

we wont do that, so inflation is here to stay, maybe we need to learn how to better conserve and invest

warren buffet drives around an old beat up pickup high miles truck to keep his costs down, lol

he sure doesnt have too, but its wise and prudent to spend much less than We earn

  40. David Collins says:

the billionaires gaming the system, is the pain we feel the most

small example, Musk invests heavily into dogecoin, and dogecoin dumps twice after his doge day tweets

then news comes out he dumped and shorted doge, then went long and repeated

he gamed the system, and stole gains from others

billionaires, ALWAYS make their money from THEFT and manipulation, thats called capitalism

  41. David Collins says:

yea i know im going off, lol im just as pissed off at rising costs as anyone else. it hits me at a vulnerable point in my life when i was finally breaking free of the capitolist billionaires attempting to steal the gains from our labor, and laugh at us. ill figure a way out, its just exhausting trying to escape the slavemasters, they are determined to keep the chains on us.
the bill will come due, and all of us will pay for the corrupt billionaires games, while they offshore our jobs with taxpayer subsidies meant to KEEP jobs in the US

GM is one of many companies stealing tax subsidies and offshoring jobs with it

    • stangerx says:

DeSantis is is the Florida government and he’s telling businesses what to do. US gov hasn’t told companies they have to check Covid status, but some companies want to.

billionaires love to exploit people like You and Me , its how they get richer every year

      • steveccnv says:

Yes and they’ve thrived the past year with all of these lockdowns, but you’ll never see the forest for the trees

  44. David Collins says:

    top paid Ceos of 2020

Chad Richison (Paycom) – $211.13 million
Amir Dan Rubin (1Life Healthcare) – $199.05 million
    John Legere (T-Mobile) – $137.2 million
Larry Culp (General Electric) – $73.19 million
Chris Nassetta (Hilton) – $55.87 million

i doubt any of these guys
are worried about inflation hurting their offshore bank accounts they didnt pay taxes on

Even though the unemployment rate fell by more than 40 percent between June 2020 and January 2021 (to 6.3 percent), poverty has increased over the same period, with about eight million more people living in poverty

as the economy recovers, and many go back to work,
millions more Americans get left behind in poverty,

the capitalist/slave system is designed and bought for a lucky few, the rest of the nation takes it up the azz

  45. steveccnv says:

Stimulus money is to blame for inflation. People have cash, so they spend and spend, even though prices keep going up

    • David Collins says:

thats not it, thats what the billionaires want us to think, its THEM, they always want to shift the blame to us , so we dont stop their theft

i showed you the employment stats going up, people going back to work, and at the same time are getting poorer?

why arent the workers benefitting more from the recovery, even with the stim checks?

because the workers are getting small potatoes while the billionaires control the means of production, and control their own paychecks and ours

      • steveccnv says:

Part of running a country is controlling inflation. Biden isn’t just doing a horrible job with it, he seems to want it.

Biden is synonymous with those pulling his strings. We all know he isn’t running the country.

The billionaires have a lot of pull on what is going on politically, and we know what side their campaign contributions went to

  46. David Collins says:

thieves are not honest people, lol

they try to cover their tracks, blame others, and laugh behind our backs when they get away with it

the US brand of capitolism and
extreme wealth inequality, is not long term substainable for American labor, we are designed to fall further behind

most of our children dont have it as good as we did, and it will get worse as the billionaires become trillionaires, while poverty and inflation runs rampant

Happy Mother’s Day Herd and to all the mothers out there. They deserve everything good for putting up with us.

  49. New Age says:

    David,

I agree with many of your views on the ultra wealthy but you realize they own the same newspapers who started pushing the race narrative right after Occupy Wall Street, right? You do realize a founder of BLM just bought FOUR mansions, right? That ultra ;liberals like Bezos, who owns the Washington Post, Amazon, etc, made the most money this past year? Guys like Dr. Bill Gates (not a real doctor), who made millions off the COVID crisis? Big Pharma who made trillions off ‘maybe, possibly’ effective vaccines that will need more boosters in the future?

A lot of your schtick the past year(and longer) has been word for word what the ultra rich have been pushing in their media outlets. To see your grievances, while you still parrot their ideas, seems really weird to me. Hyper inflation only helps the rich so shouldn’t Biden, and other leaders, fight against inflation getting worse instead of acting like it’s not happening?

  50. CavalierKong says:

In the 2020 regular season on all 1st down plays across the league (criteria is -20 thru 99 yds gained), Minny was the best averaging 6.9 on 1st down plays. Cincy was the worst averaging 4.7 on 1st down plays. All teams average more than 4 yds on 1st down.

If you take big negative plays out of the equation (criteria is 0-99 yds gained) Houston was the best averaging 7.8. Cincy was the worst averaging 5.6.

If you take big positive plays out of the equation (criteria is -20 thru 9 yds gained), GB was the best in the league averaging 3 yds on 1st down. Philly and NYG were tied for worst at 2.0.

If you take out all big plays (criteria 0-9 yds gained), GB and SEA tied at the top averaging 3.5 on 1st down. Tampa was worst at 2.7. On 1st down plays that most often result in a 2nd down play, no teams average 4 yds.

    • ocalarob says:

so i would assume getting close to the 3.5 avg is what to strive for

      • CavalierKong says:

I’m betting last year was a bit of an anomaly in that the 0-9 range no teams averaged over 4. A quick glance at the 2007 season when I looked up the Pets, it was something like 6-8 teams crossed the 4 yd threshold.

For sh^ts and giggles, I checked the Pets 2007 year where they went not undefeated (lol). On 1st down plays between 0-9 yds, they averaged 4.5 per play

Back in the days of yore, when the Ravens won the SB with a power run team and a defense for the ages, they were near the bottom of the league on all 1st down plays at 5.3 per. They were also near the bottom of the league on 1st downs of 0-9 gained at 3.7. We know it was defense that won for the Ravens. They probably would have won the SB even if they punted on 1st down every time their offense touched the ball.

Wondering out loud here, and I don’t want YOUR preference: I’m asking what y’all think our FO might do, alright? Understood? Alright, I wanted to get that out of the way, first. Oh… and second, I’m not advocating for this AT ALL(!), I’m merely asking a question regarding our FO. Now then…

Rumors had persisted that we were all-in on Deshaun Watson, until revelations of his massage-misdeeds became public. Does anybody think our FO just MIGHT be in pursuit of Aaron Rodgers, now that he wants out of Green Bay?

As for me, I think that possibility exists… though I’d rather roll with Tua. What do you guys think?

  57. Mike E. says:

I have to say this M – I’m surprised anyone here who follows the Dolphins closely really think the Dolphins are pursuing anyone to be our QB. It’s clear as day to me we built this team for Tua, I don’t think there’s any way we’re actively looking to change that. I suppose if the Packers were going to give away Rodgers for a silly price in our favor we’d listen, but I truly don’t think anyone from our club is calling to find out about Rodgers or anyone else.

    • stangerx says:

I have two and only two reasons we’d trade for Rodgers.

1 — Flores and Grier don’t think Tua has it (no matter what they say).
2 — Ross wants it… would give us 2 years as a competitor and he ain’t getting younger.

    • Marinofan13 says:

I agree with you 100%, but I think you missed my point: what might our FO do? Nobody can deny that we’d be an immediate Super Bowl contender if we acquire A-Rod.

  58. Marinofan13 says:

Allow me to restate… I’m NOT in favor of trading for A-Rod: I trust in Tua. But what might our FO do with the possibility of a Super Bowl ring, should we acquire A-Rod?

  59. Mike E. says:

M – I hear ya, nothing wrong with discussing possibilities, no matter now unlikely they may be. I really don’t think Aaron Rodgers is going anywhere. I think we have a plan in place that includes Tua as the QB. I don’t see us changing that plan unless GB made it too easy for us to say YES. What are the odds of that happening? They will want massive compensation, and then we have to pay him. We’d have to cut a bunch of players to fit him under the cap. I can’t see it honestly, but yes, no harm in some fun discussion.

  60. bookman11 says:

    I agree 100% with Mike

2nd, Rodgers at 38 for the next decade, wow thats a big question. GB has been competitive but Rodgers in his entire career has one SB (same as Marino)…

I think Flores is trying to build something dufferent.

Rodgers at 30 I’m all in. At 38? Whew … thats a big ask.

  64. ocalarob says:

How far will Rodgers push his agenda is the question, if he is set on either being traded or retiring i’m sure GB would rather get something for him.
if he is traded i think it will be to Denver after June 1, and i think his age will diminish his value.

  78. Rhino says:

    ORob, good video on Gaskin.

I posted a few days after the draft that Gaskin may not have 2nd level elusiveness BUT he DOES have the vision to find the hole and the upper body strength to get through “arm tackle” attempts. We have some B-gap run blockers (on both sides). It really seems that Flores’ mentality is “this will work for us in the context of where we are building the entire roster”.

I will agree with MikeE on the narrator’s voice. lol. It sounded like a Patriots fan using a computer generated speech program to hide his identity while talking about the Dolphins. 🙂

    • steveccnv says:

Gaskin is just getting started, if he was given the bell cow role bet he’d show better than Najee or Etienne this year, but since we’ll be using a committee type of RB his stats will have to be projected.

The problem with projecting is he won’t be used in short yardage situations, that skew the stats, so…

Bottomline is I like Gaskin, he’s prone to some injuries, which is where similar back Ahmed comes in, then add the 2 power backs and I like the group a lot.

By waiting until the 7th to go RB, it allowed us to get Phillips, Holland, Eichenberg and Long.

Would it have been to draft Najee at 18? Who knows, just glad we got Waddle

  79. steveccnv says:

Hunter Long is a lunchpail type of TE, that can go down the seam on occasion, he’s not a playmaker like Gesicki.

He may end up being a replacement for Gesicki, but that would include change of philosophy for how we use TE.

What if we drafted him to compliment Gesicki, instead of to replace?

The future salary cap is going to skyrocket, no time to be drafting a replacement for a playmaker, that’s only getting better, because he’s too expensive to re-sign.

Smythe may be the guy that has to worry

    • bailbondmike says:

That is what I was saying the other day. Sheehan or Smythe.

      • steveccnv says:

Actually, I’d say Shaheen more than Smythe, because he doesn’t bring a skill that is better than the other 3.

Gesicki the best receiver, Smythe the best blocker, Long the best 3rd down/short yardage receiver or all around

  80. bailbondmike says:

I think our coaches liked what they saw in year one.

  81. steveccnv says:

Our last playoff win was against the Colts, with Lamar Smith running for over 200, the next week he couldn’t get out of bed and laid an egg against the Raiders.

Depth at RB is a good thing to have. On any given Sunday I could see any of the 4 carrying the load successfully.

I could also see all 4 of them not succeeding on a given Sunday, but that’s besides the point 😉

  82. bailbondmike says:

I think Bowden will make it as WR6.

    • steveccnv says:

Here’s some skills others don’t including Wildcat and throwing, but not sure how he sees the field this year.

We gave up a 3rd I believe to get him, so I don’t think they part ways with him this quickly, especially since he was pretty good EOY

  83. Rockphin says:

Everyone forget about what reality is. Forget what guys ACTUALLY you know DID IN THE PAST. Let’s all just use our “eyeballs” as skewed by our preconceived notions and state what we believe is true even though history and past performance says otherwise.

Gesicki in 4 years at Penn 129 catches 1481 yards 11.5 ave 15TD’s
    Long in 3 years at BC 89 catches 1297 yards 14.6 ave 9 TD’s

Gesicki is OBVIOUSLY more of a “down field weapon” coming out of college. (insert eyeroll emoji here)

    • steveccnv says:

Long’s college stats don’t match the eye test from what I saw, but I’d be shocked, if his ypc exceeds Gesicki’s in any year both have over 15 catches.

Just don’t see him projecting to be a downfield NFL TE.

College stats can be very misleading as to what he’ll do in the NFL

    in the 1st quarter

    ———————–

What picture is it telling? You've narrowed the focus down to only 2-4 plays in an entire game, and that is for workhorse type backs. Non top backs you're probably talking 1-2 plays a game at most.

Derrick Henry had 52 plays in 16 games that fit that criteria (appx 3.3 plays a game). He averaged 2.9 yds on those carries.

Dalvin Cook had 43 in 14 games (appx 3 plays per game). He averaged 3.8 on those carries.

Nick Chubb had 31 in 12 games (appx 2.6 plays per game). He averaged 2.5 yds on those carries.

Aaron Jones 31 in 14 games (appx 2.2 per game). Avg 2.9 yds.

Fournette with Tampa 11 in 6 games (appx 1.8 per game). Avg 2.0 yds.

    • ocalarob says:

every team runs on 1st down in the 1st qtr sometime or another, who avg’s the best YPC on 1st down 9 yards or less in the 1st Qtr?

      should be a laundry list.

from what you have above looks like Cook is the man, Henry is surprising but he breaks a lot of runs for long gains so omitting them may skew his perceived performance.

      • CavalierKong says:

Cook has the best numbers, but it doesn’t necessarily correlate to wins. Cook’s team only won 7 last year.

To be honest I’m not sure what we’re really saying with these numbers, other than we’re playing with the stats and seeing what the numbers tell us. Which I have to admit, I’m having fun doing.

I wish this site had the 70’s, 80’s, and all the 90’s (it starts at 94). I bet the stats you’re wanting to look at tell a much bigger picture in those earlier decades.

It’ll have 2 of 3 of those dominate running Cowboys teams of the 90s. I’ll have to pull up their numbers when I get a chance. I bet Emmett Smith averaged over 4 yds per no matter what point of the game it was.

  87. stangerx says:

DK Metcalf ran the 100M in 10.36 seconds at an Olympic qualifying event on Sunday. Still real fast (winner was at 10.12) but only good for last in his initial heat.

He started quick and was right up with the leaders but then faded. Too much training for the 40?

    • steveccnv says:

He just doesn’t have world class speed in the 100, but we still know he’s really fast after running down Baker.

Sure he’d be better in the 100 with more training, but don’t think he’s doing much 40 training these days

      • stangerx says:

By training for the 40 meant for shorter bursts of speed. NFL concentrates on that. Not like he faded cause he got tired.

      • steveccnv says:

Don’t think too many NFL players are training for the 40 after they get drafted

  88. CavalierKong says:

Rock, why did you (insert eye roll emoji here) instead of just inserting an eye roll emoji there? lol
For effect? Or is it a phone thing?

    • steveccnv says:

      Lol

    • Rockphin says:

I cannot post from my phone. Iphone will not log in so I can only post from my work computer (but only if I open a ghost connection direct from my desk top, which doesn’t go through my server which they have blocked the site on) or from home. I can’t get logged in on either of my Iphones (home or work) I used to be able to post from my phone, but that was before I “upgraded” from Android to Iphone……

  89. New Age says:

    Kong,

Great info and thanks for all your work showing data. I think that last post shows that 1st quarter running isn’t that valuable today. Both teams are fresh and workhorse backs usually do better in the fourth when defenders are tired.

I’d like a quick look at how many drives are killed by penalty. My quick and always accurate eye test says…. ALL OF THEM that fail.

In all seriousness, most games seem fairly close until after halftime adjustments. I still believe one big reason we hit 10 wins was low penalties…and that will be a key again this year. Don’t beat yourself, and you will usually compete with anyone.

    • CavalierKong says:

      Cheers, New Age 🙂

I’m having fun with the stats and Rob is giving me fresh stuff to look up. I’ve been surprised by a lot of the results.

I just did a quick look, but I don’t think the site has penalty information. I’m guessing because most accepted penalties are non-plays, and this data is all about plays on the field.

I know that it does calculate some of the penalty information, because looking at the 1st down information, most teams have an average yards to go over or under 10 (obviously calculating 1st and 15, 1st and 5, etc.).

I agree with you about today’s game. Unless a team has completely outclassed the other, it’s usually 2nd half adjustments and execution that determine the game. It often feels like you can just throw the 1st half out the window.

So much of the Patriots success came down to not beating themselves, and executing again and again in the moment in the 2nd half.

    • CavalierKong says:

After seeing Bray’s success with Tampa, I wonder how ‘great’ Belicheat really is. He’s got a great defensive mind, and that shows up in some games no doubt, but the difference between him and Shula in talk of best all time comes down to playoff success and SB wins.

We’ll see how the Pets do these last few years he has to coach them, but (here’s the tie in with the convo, lol) Brady was the one that executed in the moment in the 2nd half time and again. If Brady isn’t on the Pets, how many SBs does belicheat win?

    Niners – 3.8
    Minny – 3.7
    Lions – 3.6
    Saints – 3.4
    Jets – 3.4

The Dolphins are tied at 3.3 in the next group with Car, GB, NE, and LAC.

    • CavalierKong says:

I bet San Fran tops or is near the top of that list for the last 3 or 4 years. They have the kind of running game I think you’re looking for, Rob. They consistently run the ball well with power and speed, and their passing game is predicated on teams having to focus on stopping the run.

      • ocalarob says:

i was looking for a run down of the rbs with that criteria, you only listed 4 in the previous post, i would assume there’s a lot more. i wonder who the top back was and how many YPC did he avg with that criteria?

      • CavalierKong says:

To get lists of players, you have to sign up and pay a fee. I can look up lists of team stats and I can look up individual players. So I went with some of the top power backs in the league to get an idea of the numbers we’d see that would be relevant.

I mean the Panthers may have a big bruising power back on their roster behind Mcaffrey, but if he only has three 1st quarter, 1st down carries on the season, that doesn’t really help us even if he averaged 8 yds per.

If you’ve got any certain guys in mind, create a list, and I’ll look them up.

      • CavalierKong says:

Raheem Mostert (Niners back) 23 carries in 8 games (appx 3 per game). Avg 4 even per carry.

      • CavalierKong says:

Tevin Coleman (Niners RB) averaged 5 yds per, but he only had 2 in 2 games.

12-14 wins this season according to Mr. Miller….

  96. steveccnv says:

Tampa, Buffalo x2, NE x2, TN, Indy, Balt, LV

More hard games than easy, but could see us going 4-2 in division, maybe 4-1 NFC, 5-1 or 4-2 AFC.

4 or 5 losses seems doable

    • steveccnv says:

Then we have some games that are unfavorable due to scheduling, and we’ll lose a game we should’ve won like 2020 Denver…

  97. Rockphin says:

Cav, but did those guys run between the tackles on those plays or outside?

First down in the first quarter, 9 yards or less, BETWEEN the tackles, on Sundays, in September or October, when it is cloudy only on days after Tua had a Tuna sandwich for lunch on the previous Friday.

    • CavalierKong says:

LOL, unfortunately, you have to sign up and pay the fee for the unlimited sandwich options filter.

I can use those criteria and switch out the tuna for a ham and cheese on rye. Does that work? 🤣

    • stangerx says:

Come’on Cav. If you don’t pay the fee how you can be a proper ORob research biotch? 🙂
