Do the Dolphins really need Howard to win the AFC East?

Before the draft, my assessment of the 2021 Miami Dolphins defense was their secondary was their top unit and a big part of why the defense was a top rated defense in points allowed. Without a doubt, a huge part of that was the play of CB Xavien Howard. It wasn’t only the 10 INT’s, he would be one of the top 10 CB’s in the NFL without that, but those 10 turnovers vault him into top 3 territory. Think about that for a moment, teams regularly employ 3 CB’s, and sometimes as many as 5 or even 6. To be conservative, to be in the top 3 of say 48 CB’s is an accomplishment. It’s not only his great play alone too, his play makes it much easier for everyone else on the team to get their job done. He also has that uncanny ability to read the QB and jump throws which make him a very dangerous defensive player to challenge, although he was often challenged and he made QB’s pay.To me, it’s clear Howard doesn’t have long term confidence in his wary body so he wants to be paid now. Hard not to appreciate his circumstance even if it’s not great for the team to rip up a very lucrative contract signed just 2 seasons ago and pay him a boatload more. In my opinion though, I don’t have an issue with paying him this year and the next for two productive seasons and then having a parachute to get out without any cap hits after the next 2 seasons. I doubt Howard would take issue with that as long as he gets paid up front. I almost see that as a WIN-WIN.

If, say the Dolphins take a hard stance against their star CB Howard, it would almost certainly be last year’s 30th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, CB Noah Igbinoghene that would replace Howard. Last season Iggy was very limited in what they allowed him to do, playing time was sparse playing only 28% of the snaps on defense. The reason was two fold though, it seemed as if last year Flores and the defensive coaches wanted Igbinoghene to concentrate on playing the boundary rather than insert him in at the slot playing inside. He also struggled in limited time against one of the league’s best WR’s Stefon Diggs, which was a lot to ask. From my recollection, his coverage was not poor against Diggs, it was more Allen making some pinpoint throws in which Iggy had pretty good coverage on. In any case, they clearly didn’t feel he was ready for prime time last season, but has that changed in 2021? Do the Dolphins feel that removing one of the best CB’s in the NFL and replacing him with an untested 2nd year player against a division in which each team has improved offensively is the right way to go?

Let’s look at how the AFC East has evolved and changed from 2020 to 2021. The Patriots drafted Mac Jones with pick #15 in the 2021 NFL Draft. He will compete with Cam Newton for the starting spot. In addition, the patriots quietly fortified their receiving corps bringing in Kendrick Bourne from San Francisco and Nelson Agholor from the Las Vegas Raiders who will join promising WR N’Keal Harry (2019 pick #30) and Jakobi Meyers (Not the law firm). A modest upgrade but if Mac Jones can play like Justin Herbert did last season or even Joe Burrow (minus the injury), they can and should be a better offense. The Jets made offense a priority in2021, drafting QB Zach Wilson with the 2nd pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and following that pick up with OT Alijah Vera-Tucker, then WR Elijah Moore and then RB Michael Carter. 4 picks in rounds 1 and 2 ALL on offense. The Jets were dreadful last year, you have to expect them to be better although they are putting all their eggs in one basket by clearly handing over the reins to rookie QB Zach Wilson. With QB’s Mike White and James Morgan the only other QB’s on the roster, the Jets are putting quite a lot of pressure on the young QB. They do have a nice receiving corps though with Denzel Mims, Jamison Crowder, and in FA in 2021 they added former Tennessee Titans WR Corey Davis who had his career best season last year with just a shade under 1000 yards averaging a nice 15.1 YPR. If Zach Wilson is for real, the Jets should be considerably better in 2021. The Bills already had one of the most potent offenses in the NFL, 2nd in the NFL in scoring at 31.3 PPG. The Bills stayed pat with what they had on offense and doubled down on defense for 2021. In summation, this division may have gotten more difficult to defend.

No question we shored up our LB corps with the addition of Benardrick McKinney and the drafting of potential pas rushing star Jaelan Phillips, and drafting safety Jevon Holland in RD 2. It also should not be overlooked that we added S Jason McCourty as well as nickelback Justin Coleman, formerly of the Patriots, Seahawks and Lions. Still, losing Howard after all those moves is a huge gamble. I’m not sure how things will play out and whether the holdout will either force a trade or if the holdout can last through the season. My choice for resolution is clear, frontload the contract so you hopefully get what you pay for in the next 2 seasons, make Howard happy, and then easily be able to cut him painlessly for the cap if his health depreciates along with his play. An extensive holdout possibly lasting through the season helps neither party and a trade only helps the future, not the present team.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

D, I hear ya. I’m not taking my grill to anyone’s house, lol. They can come and get it if they want it or I’ll use what they have. Unless we’re doing a cookoff, then I bring my setup.

But I’ll take my 18″ to the beach and/ or camping. It fits entirely into the trunk, and it doesn’t need to be plugged in, which is one of the drawbacks to anything with a hopper. One of the best times we ever had was camping on the beach up at Crescent City. Set up the smoker and a bonfire. It was about 20 of us, and we were setting food out all night. Good effing times, brother.
    ——————————————————–
Ya’lls beaches are a little different than our but we have set up on the beach and did some surf fishing and were running some crab lines and caught and cooked right there. on a good night you could keep if going pretty well. We use to also siene nets to catch a bigger batch of stuff, but you do that at caught and you might get a surprise. We caught not one but 2 sharks in one go once, a hammerhead and a sand shark. Scariest part is how we were doing the netting basically wading out to a sandbar a little ways off the shore walking away from one another down that sandbar (which is still submerged just more like waist deep) and then walking in catching anything between the two of you. So we were out there with those beauties’ lol and they were not small ones.

  3. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, I’m just goofing around about sharks in the ocean. There have been a lot of great white sightings on the east coast in NJ up to Cape Cod and people are acting like this is something unprecedented. They have always been there. The ocean isn’t a swimming pool. LOL

    • D's avatar D says:

It’s all good but we were never in water deeper than probably shoulder deep. We know they are out there but catching two of them in a semi short span of net no more than 60-70 yards off the shoreline is an eye opener

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’d say that’s pretty accurate but I think Albert Wilson who says he’s 100% and ready to get balling again makes the team. He adds a speed dimension in multiple rolls and provides speed depth along with Fuller and Waddle.

  4. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not totally sure what our offense will be, but I think the RPO with 3 WR, a TE and RB will be the majority. We’ve discussed the multiple TE offense which I think we’ll see at times but the base will be the RPO. I think that is what Tua excels in and it allows us to create the best mismatches with our personnel. The speed we have now has to be utilized. Tua also excels with waggles and bootlegs throwing on the move. Spread defenses out and make them chase all day. With the speed we have I can’t see teams stacking the box. Gaskin should benefit from that with his running style.

Border patrol agents in Texas have announced an 800% rise in fentanyl trafficking from across the Mexican border since last year at this time. 😡

That isn’t a political statement, it’s a fact. More tragedies are just waiting to happen.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Our government and military can overtake a nation for whatever reason. But we can’t combat the drug cartels. Why is that?

We allow the evilest people to control a trade that kills our citizens and ruins lives. Just guessing but someone is getting paid. 😉

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I hear ya, man. I don’t want to make it political, but we didn’t have the same problems a mere year ago. Our border is open and all kinds of shit are getting through. Not good.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Oh yeah… and we had COVID coming through the border in the middle of the pandemic. SMH

This problem has existed for decades. Just saying not to be political doesn’t make it so.

This is why some of us support legalizing drugs and prostitution etc., because it takes the evil criminal element out of it. Then we can focus on the users and why. The black market spreads our efforts out like I hope our offense does to our opponents. 😉

      Isn’t Fentanyl made in china?

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Don’t know for sure, but I’d think it could be made anywhere.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It doesn’t really matter where it comes from. Why is it a popular product? Lots of heroin comes from Afghanistan, cocaine from south and central America. Weed can be grown anywhere and it should be legal. Finally people are starting to accept that.

There is a difference between taking a few hits of weed to get a nice calming buzz and totally tuning out with the hard stuff. Legalizing it does not make people say hey… now I’ll shoot heroin. It’s a stupid argument. Go into a liquor store. There are hundreds of options, do you drink them all?

Again, I hear ya, man. I’ve thought about the legalization side as well, and for the exact reasons, you state. There are pros and cons (as there is with everything), I just hope we don’t open Pandora’s Box by legalizing certain things.

Wisdom: open 1 mere door, and 50 others open… and not all of those 50 doors are good options.

MJ is all but nationally legit already… the positive is that we don’t need to worry about fentanyl-laced MJ any longer. The negative is that we could have a society dumbed-down and lazy via MJ… and alcohol was already doing a good job of that.

Most people had a drink before they smoked their first joint. In, say, 25 years… what’s next? Had a drink, had a joint… does that lead to legalizing something worse (precedence)? I’ll go with the non-gateway drug argument… it’ll be bad enough when we have a society of alcoholics and chronic weed-smokers… and I’ve known plenty of BOTH, because both alcohol and weed are addictive.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I honestly don’t have the answer, and I see both sides of the argument.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The gateway is on you. You either believe in the individual to make good decisions or you don’t.

The black market fills those addictions now lead by really bad people. It fills prisons, destroys and ends lives as it is.

If heroin was legal would you start shooting up? I wouldn’t either. 😉

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

SOLID point, Tim, but we’re no longer kids who are trying to figure out what won’t kill us.

Just be aware that these so-called progressives out west have already proposed making heroin (and some other hardcore substances) legal. It hasn’t passed (yet), but it’s on their docket.

        Scary shit, Brother.

  7. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

And by the way? What is legal or not!

    I’ll ask again…
“There is a difference between taking a few hits of weed to get a nice calming buzz and totally tuning out with the hard stuff. Legalizing it does not make people say hey… now I’ll shoot heroin. It’s a stupid argument. Go into a liquor store. There are hundreds of options, do you drink them all?”

So you’re not an individual but some sort of sheep now?

Do you eat fast food everyday or do you make choices?

Do you realize the resources and money we spend trying to somewhat combat the black market?

It’s as if we don’t know who we are as humans.

I don’t view this as politics but psychology.

  12. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yes, the doldrums are consuming the NFL world!

Something I found interesting (last week), the Stealers* released David DeCastro. That means the Stealers* have parted with 4 of their 5 starting O-Linemen from last year.

Big Ben isn’t nearly as tough/agile/mobile as he once had been. Najee Harris could have major problems running behind this patchwork O-Line.

It’s entirely possible that the playoff-regular Stealers* won’t make it this year.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The Steelers oline doesn’t matter. Harris is a man among boys, and he will destroy all that gets in his path with or without a line.

His sole focus will to be to crush his enemies, see them driven before him, and to hear the lamentation of Mike and the Dolphins for not selecting him. 😉

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Hey, now! I wanted Najee, too, man!

Think he could run better behind our O-Line than the Stealers* crap-shoot O-Line.

It’s all good, though. Methinks we had one helluva draft.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

…and to hear the lamentation of Mike, MF13, anyone else who whined about Harris, and the Dolphins for not selecting him. 😉

Tua? Only 9 starts last season… not a whole lotta tape out there to decipher, especially being it was a rehab year for him.

There was only one other Dolphins QB who had 9 starts in his freshman (first) year: some guy named Dan Marino. Yeah, opposing Defenses couldn’t figure him out in his sophomore (second) season (1984!).

      • D's avatar D says:

Apparently Cali banned all state funded travel to any state that has rules preventing trans MTF from competing in women’s sports. I guess that means state college travel to compete against colleges in those other states.

They threatened this before but nothing ever came if it, but that was about other states having any insensitive items on their states laws. Seems they are into strong arming other states to believe like they do.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Ah, I don’t know anything about that, but it doesn’t surprise me. That’s dumb IMO, and even though I’m a supporter of that communities rights, I don’t agree with trans women competing in female competitions.

I don’t think it’s ‘strong arming’ any states. It’s not like Florida is going to say ‘oh never mind, we’ll change these laws because some of CAs athletes won’t be able to compete here’, lol.

Kong – To be fair, I was much more upset we let the Broncos jump us for Javonte Williams. I said many times I thought we were taking Jaelan Phillips and that we should take him. It was the next pick. I thought we should have traded up to the beginning of the round to get him.

    • D's avatar D says:

When you miss out on a player because of a team trading up to 2 spots before you, you can’t be angry about that, that happens to all teams. You can bet in the draft anytime someone leapfrogs someone else someone down stream got shafted. There was no way to protect against that. I know they like Phillips and I know he was a good pick but that was where they gambled. They gambled by not taking Harris that they could get their DE and still get Williams and then they got sniped. Had they taken Harris and the grabbed a DE prospect in the 2nd they would have missed out on the top pass rusher. My guess is they knew no matter how they played it they were going to lose out and decided it was worse to lose out on Phillips than Harris and likely the chance of getting Williams in the second was like a luxury of going that direction

I keep forgetting we have 17 regular season games next season. At first I thought 4500 yards for Tua might be a little stretch and he’d be somewhere between the 3800 and the 4500, but closer to the 3800. He wouldn’t need to throw 30 times a game to do it either. He just needs to get his YPA up.

With no guaranteed money after this year, and his bad knees he wants a new contract.

It’s smart on his part, but a dick move.

You either wait until after 2019 and get more guarantees later and hope you don’t get hurt or you sign as he did before the 2019 season getting more money upfront quicker.

He chose the money now, with his knees it was a good insurance policy in case he got hurt, which he did.

If he had chosen to wait until after 2019 he likely would’ve gotten a smaller contract coming off of an injury and maybe a 1 year deal

It does but I actually wasn’t blown away by the women saw when was there. But might have been cause of reality not meeting my expectations.

    Norway has hot looking blondes
    ————————————-
You ain’t kidding! I got to share a 3 person popup tent with 2 Norwegian military personnel during cold weather training in Bridgeport, CA for a week. One dude and one woman. It was a cold weather medicine course. He was like a Norwegian special ops guy who taught cold weather survival and she was a medical administrative officer who specialized in course curriculum. They were there to help evaluate and makes suggestions for changes to our training. She was so hot!!!

I was so nervous that first morning when I woke up with a piss hard on. I couldn’t get out of my sleeping bag. The other dude had already gotten up. I was about to piss myself when she rolled over and smiled at me and said “I guess we better get up”. All I could do was smile back, I couldn’t muster one word. She slept in her military green t-shirt and jogging shorts.

It’s one of those moments in life you never forget. Her face is still engraved in the back of my mind like it was yesterday. lol

There were 4 or 5 of them, Eleanor Rigby, Strawberry Fields and so on. So as we approach the male, mind you these are big tortoises bigger than that big yellow Tonka dump truck you had. I said, let me guess Norwegian Wood?
Couldn’t believe I was wrong it was some obscure bullshit name, what a wasted opportunity.

She was like an athletic model. Amazing beautiful face, blonde and blue eyes. OH, almost forgot, she is very smart. LOL The concepts and technology she presented to us really helped us revamp our process of evacuating casualties in that environment. She was an amazing woman in every facet. “For the record, Gaskin averaged 58.4 rushing yards per game in the NFL last season , which ranked 19th, and his average of 97.2 yards from scrimmage ranked in top 10 among running backs. He also was one of only nine running backs with at least 500 rushing yards and 350 receiving yards, and this despite being limited to 10 games because of COVID-19 and knee issues.”

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The one thing I remember that stood out to me last year about Gaskin, was he almost always got an extra yard or two more than I expected him to get as the play was developing. He always ran hard and played bigger than his size. Hopefully he can stay healthy this year.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, for me it was a great throw because Fitz had his head turned sideways, his helmet was covering his face so he couldn’t see the target, and his whole upper body was being twisted and going backwards because of it, yet he still got the ball out and threw it 40 yards down the field right on target on the sideline. LOL

Here’s an interesting take. I know there were some who questioned why we took Holland as the first safety off the board in the draft. I personally would never name a player who hasn’t played a snap yet as the ‘most’ anything in the league, lol, and Jones-Drew has a history with Holland- so grain of salt, but still nice to read some positive things about the kid.

  79. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

  80. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“I’m gonna go with the Miami Dolphins’ second-round pick Jevon Holland out of the University of Oregon. Now, I coached him in high school and this is why I brought him up because he was our best DB and our best WR at that point but it was just high school. So then he goes to Oregon, dominates as a freshman. Plays safety, corner as we see here covering tight ends, inside linebacker, plays the nickel. They have him return kicks and punts.”

“But then all of a sudden there’s this rumor out that if he had played in this 2020 season, that Oregon had a package for him offensively. Now that’s going to be like Charles Woodson-esque, right? Now all of a sudden you’re trying to get the ball in his hands. The Dolphins have talked about — and this is just me talking with some of their coaches and people in their organization — they have said he is just been tremendous out there. The knowledge of the game. They can put him everywhere. I can’t wait for him to show his versatility this year.”

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Tim, we might take that approach with Ogbah too. I’m confident Gesicki will have a good year barring injury. Ogbah is the one that interests me, and we might end up regretting not extending him now. If Phillips balls out, Ogbah should have a better year too.

I think we know what we have in Gesicki, and that’s a PLUS. Ogbah, on the other hand, may have to prove himself yet again.

I’d like to see both get re-signed, but I’d get Gesicki done ASAP.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Knowing that Gesicki can be franchised for $11+ mil might be a reason for the hold up though, especially if his agent is asking for more.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

That’s plausible, but it’s also a ‘duct tape’ solution to getting a long-term contract done. Not sure I like the Franchise Tag, in concept alone. We’ll see what happens…

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yep! We have time and options on both Gesicki and Ogbah.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

But that number has to come into negotiations. No getting around that. And on the Dolphins’ side they can just punt into next year. Franchise and Gesicki is on the roster.

  86. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kong, Ogbah might not want to sign on the low thinking he can have a big year and get the really big deal in 2022. Some players bet on themselves.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Absolutel could be the case. He’s let it be known through the media he wants an extension, but the two sides might have different ideas about what that looks like monetarily. If so, Ogbah might be saying ‘alright but you guys will pay next year’

Plus side for us is he’ll be extra motivated this year.

  87. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Guys,

Correct me if I’m misinformed, but isn’t every team now afforded 2 Franchise Tags per season?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Nevermind… it had been discussed (just as a 17-game regular season), but it never passed.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

OBVIOUSLY, the 17-game regular season passed… I’d thought perhaps the pork (2 Franchise Tags per team) had passed as well.

  88. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

As far as the tag and Ogbah — defensive end franchise tag would be about $16 mil. Don’t think that is happening. But also might be a reason you see him getting re-signed before Gesicki.

The Left ruins everything. Even the Olympics.

We went from Jesse Owens and the 1980 men’s hockey team to men playing women’s sports and athletes disrespecting the flag.

    Steve,

    Jim Jordan ROCKS!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Respect Jim Jordan cause he is real smart and crafty about how he puts stuff out.

But how do you feel about Devin Nunes? All that hits me about him is stupid and stooge.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

You may know much more about Nunes than I, but I happen to like the guy. Granted, I don’t know a whole lot about him or his history. You may have me at a disadvantage.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If you like him that’s cool. Like said have respect for Jordan but not him. But if you see something to like about Nunes may have to reconsider. And you do get am talking from a political operative and not political standpoint. What I used to do.

The WTF team is getting hammered…. and you guys know hate Dan Snyder, who is especially getting hammered.
    ————————————
The NFL is fining the Washington Football Team $10 million following the completion of its investigation into the franchise’s culture.

Tanya Snyder, who was appointed co-CEO earlier this week, will be handling team business for the next few months and possibly longer.

“As co-CEO, Tanya Snyder will assume responsibilities for all day-to-day team operations and represent the club at all league meetings and other league activities for at least the next several months. Dan Snyder will concentrate on a new stadium plan and other matters. All senior executives of the club, including Dan and Tanya Snyder, will undertake comprehensive training in workplace conduct and related issues (including bullying, diversity and inclusion, harassment, LGBTQ issues, microaggression, and unconscious bias, among other topics).”

This means the NFL is essentially suspending Dan Snyder.

    Stanger,

It’s very difficult to ascertain the true intentions/goals of any politician, man. Some come to Washington with the greatest of intentions, then find out how bad the corruption truly has become.

Special interests and lobbyists (<– *ahem*) can radically change the initial course of any politician. I don't trust ANY of them, bud. Some people have recently referred to Washington as "the swamp", but I've always referred to it as the "Washington Tentacles" (like a football team name)… like an octopus, bringing them in from 8 different appendages, and one can't get away.

I'm a registered Independent voter because I do not trust either side of said "duopoly" (props to Tim). I can't vote in the primaries, and I'm cool with it.

I very much love President Trump because he could not be bought, would never sell out, and wasn't a politician.

Just my $.02 on politics, right or wrong.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Good for you. I was just saying Nunes doesn’t seem smart. Jordan seems very smart. Gaetz does as well, even if a bit of a loose cannon. All I was saying. And I just said two major Trump supporters are real smart.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m not a political operative as you had once been, but I DO have strong opinions regarding politics. And to be honest, there are a few (not many) ‘higher up’ political minds who value my insight. No, I’m not an ‘advisor’ to anyone, either.

I’m passionate, compassionate, and deeply care for the future of FREEDOM in not only America, but the world over.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

M13 — have absolute trust in your vote being a well-informed one. Was just talking about Nunes with you.
