Up and coming star? Andrew Van Ginkel

If you’re a regular reader here, you know I just highlighted our 2nd first round pick, Jaelan Phillips in my last article. Now it’s the guy on the other side, WOLB Andy Van Ginkel. I think Phillips will be an NFL star, maybe even this season, but I think we may have a star in the making in AVG. A little shorter and a little lighter than Phillips, AVG is a fast moving, agile athlete. Phillips is 6’5 260 while AVG is 6’3 241. Both ran the 40 in 4.56. AVG really excels in that short burst speed and agility running the 10 yard in 1.56 and the 3 cone at 6.86, fantastic for his size. Many WR’s and DB’s can’t post times that good. His 4.14 20 yard shuttle shows elite quick burst speed. Speed is his game so don’t expect AVG to ever exceed 245 lbs, he’s not a power player.

What can we expect from this much unheralded player who quietly made himself known to Miami Dolphins fans? Playing in only 46% of the snaps, AVG posted some heady stats in limited playing time. 48 total tackles (29 solo), 10 QB hits, 5.5 sacks, 3 FF’s, 1 FR returned for a TD, 7 TFL and 4 passes defensed. Well rounded numbers showing legitimate versatility. With KVN gone this season, AVG is the started opposite Phillips who will be playing the strong side. Will AVG be able to withstand more snaps and will his body be able to endure more snaps? We’re going to find out because I believe he will be given every chance to do that and will play as many snaps as he can. One thing I do know is the league has definitely shifted towards speed, and this year, the Dolphins defense has the speed to match up. Even big Benardrick McKinney who will be side by side in the middle with Jerome Baker can run well. He’s the sole LB who doesn’t cut the sub 4.6 threshold but his 4.66 is nothing to sneeze at considering his 6’4 260 size. McKinney is a thumper that can move though, and that’s good considering Elandon Roberts is returning from an injury sustained the second to last week of the season. He may not available to the Dolphins defense until mid season.

If more playing time is better for AVG then it’s not unrealistic to think AVG may nearly double his sack total to 10 or more, and his QB hit number to close to 20. With the added attention Phillips and Ogbah will likely garner, it’s not crazy really. The one thing we don’t know is what AVG’s body can endure. Some guys are relief pitchers simply because they get exposed the longer they are out there. Will that be true of AVG? I for one don’t believe so, I think he will shine once again, but time will tell.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Good write, Mike. I agree with you on this article. This defense has a lot of potential to build on what they started last year. AVG is definitely one of those players I can see taking it to another level.

    Nice write Mike E

  6. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Mike E — great info on AVG. When we took him he was sorta a head head scratcher. Pass rushing guy but way too light for it. Figured special teams and specialty packages. But we hadn’t seen what this D is like before that. And here he is starting WOLB.

Part of that though is that Baker is playing inside. On most teams Baker has Will written all over him.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

In a 4-3 Baker is a Will but I think he could also play the Mike. He does a lot of things well.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Baker is light and fast. Doesn’t it start with that? I think on the back 7 or 8 we have the “everyone can do pass coverage or rush the QB” D.

  7. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I still see AVG as a specialist pass rusher. I don’t think he is good enough at setting the edge against the run

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s the area he needs to improve on. In an interview this offseason he did mention that one of the things he’s focusing on is strength.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

When we’re in the base 3-4, he’s playing OLB. Yes, he will be employed in speed rushing packages as well. He’s a versatile player

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

In a normal 3-4 the WOLB has a lot of pass coverage responsibilities. Do we even know AVG can do that? Or in this D is it the normal rules don’t apply?

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I would not like to have him in pass coverage

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He dropped in coverage a lot last year. We do a lot of fake blitzing and then drop. But sometimes when he does that we send a DB off the edge. We do a lot of mixing it up blitz packages.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m pretty sure I saw AVG in coverage last year

I have no idea how this stat is kept or measured but this site has him targeted 6 times last year, and has 5 completions on this targets

        https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/V/VanGAn00.htm

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s when targeted. There may have been a bunch of other times they didn’t target him. Also sometimes we use zone blitzes where he’s not necessarily covering man, but dropping into a zone.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Might be as simple as Baker will be doing the covering and AVG will do the tackling. And much as love the LBs in other ways….. Baker’s the only one know can cover well.

  8. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Don’t sleep (under a tree) on Van Ginkle

  9. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Developing players like AVG into playmakers is a a sign of a good system and good coaching job

So his success in a lot of ways reflects on the coaching and the atmosphere that we are building

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We drafted him for his versatility. He dropped in coverage a lot in college. He’s got good instincts too. He’s not a one trick pony.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        He’s not a pony either

He’s a Dutch American Colonial Villager who fell asleep under a tree for a few decades and can bring pressure from the outside

  10. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Also, nice write up Mike

    You blog producing jerk!😆

  11. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

AVG can definitely cover. Only other LB on our defense I’d rather see in coverage is Baker.

  12. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Another good write, Mike E. If Van Ginkel continues to flourish, we’ve truly found a diamond in the rough… and a keeper, at that. He plays with his pants on fire, high-motor class, and he’s a playmaker, on top of it all.

Many Phin fans will point out the fact we’ve not had a dominant QB since Marino (MOST true)… but we’ve also not had a dominant LB (any LB position) since Zach. We’ve continued to miss on LBs for two decades, and it’s sad!

Between Baker and AVG, I think we’re finally getting it right at LB. I hope AVG can play his way into an extension, just as Baker has done. As a matter of fact, I believe he will!

  13. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Remember too this is just year 3 of this defense being built. A lot of it has been about acquiring talent that fits what we want to do and then coaching them up. It takes time but now we should be settling in and taking the next step.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think we have accomplished a lot of the acquisition of talent that we need to see then Identity on the filed (although I acknowledge that we need more and even if we have enough this is a continuous job)

I’m a lot of ways that 🗑 2015 season accelerated the process

Remember guessing who our DBs were every week?😲

  14. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Are we counting Porter and Wake as part of the LB drought

Bc I thought both were pretty good (even Porter)

Speaking of good LBs in the past- what about John Offerdahl. He was Very good on some very bad teams. And his bagels are very good too.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Wake was primarily a DE for us, and most of his success came from the DE position. Yes, he was an OLB for us for a short bit. Porter did have a very good year with us, but it was but one year.

We’ve truly sucked at drafting or signing FA LBs over the last 20 years.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Offerdahl was back in the 80’s. M13 said for two decades.

  15. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I remember that Bill Parcells used to have pretty strict requirements for size and weight of LBs

And I’m pretty sure Jeff Ireland followed that model while Bill Belicheat did not follow that model

    Maybe it’s a shitty model?

  16. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Joey Porter had 32 sacks for us in 3 seasons. His first year was under Cam Cameron when we played a 4-3 that didn’t fit what he did well so he only had 5.5 sacks. Parcells took over, we switched to a 3-4 and he racked up 17.5 and 9 sacks. That’s what he did well, off the edge as a 3-4 OLB.

  17. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

As for Offerdahl, he was the only bright spot on those shitty defenses during that time. It seemed he had to make every play.

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Porter was an overpriced FA. He had a good season for us but we overpaid for his services. Steelers know when to say goodbye

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He produced all three seasons with us. But it was Mueller/Cameron who signed him and then played him in the wrong defense in 2007. He still had game when the Steelers let him walk. So I disagree on that one.

  19. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Parcells LB’s here in MIA were a bunch of sloths. I hated what he did here for our team. I couldn’t give a flying fuck what he did for the Giants, Jets or Patriots because he sucked ass here. Mr. Money Grab was what he was here

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Why go there again? The only mention of him was Piggy talking about the LB criteria which worked for many years. It just didn’t work long term here. We all know the history. It didn’t pan out. But this discussion was not about Parcells being great or anything. We’re just talking LBs.

As for Porter, he has the 2nd most sacks in a season (officially) in Dolphins history with 17.5 behind only JT with 18.5. The only other guy in that range was Bill Stanfill (unofficial) before sack stats were recorded was 18.5 in 1973.

  20. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Miami Dolphins LBs drafted since 2000

    2001: Morlon Greenwood
    2003: Eddie Moore
    2004: Tony Bua, Derrick Pope
    2005: Channing Crowder
    2007: Kelvin Smith
    2009: J.D. Folsom
2010: Koa Misi, A.J. Edds, Austin Spitler
    2012: Josh Kaddu
    2013: Jelani Jenkins
    2014: Jordan Tripp
    2017: Charles Harris, Raekwon McMillan
    2018: Jerome Baker, Quentin Poling
    2019: Andrew Van Ginkel

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

What are you trying to do, bum us out? LOL

Jelani Jenkins looked promising and was ascending similar to Baker has been but just phased out all of a sudden. I think it was injuries.

Charles Harris was not really a LB, he was an edge/DE. But he was a swing and miss for sure. He was a tweener who was not strong enough at DE and not quick enough as an OLB.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

LOL, NO, NOT trying to bum anybody out, man. I think the future looks VERY BRIGHT with AVG and Baker!

  27. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think we all want to see how we use Phillips. He has film both standing as an OLB and hand in the ground DE. He played a lot on the left side at UM ala Cam Wake on the strong side, but played right side too. Ogbah plays left side predominantly with hand in the ground though. AVG also has played left strong side at OLB. So how do we utilize them all? Maybe they all play some versatile roles and move around both left or right side. The bottom line is just get to the QB.

Don’t count out Vince Biegel either, he was progressing in 2019.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I love it! If some of you can’t figure it out that’s a good thing.

Most QBs won’t be able to either. Brilliant!

  28. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Our core players on the front seven without counting some surprise players we’re not aware of yet.
DL: Wilkins, Davis, Seiler, Butler and Jenkins
Edge: Ogbah, Van Ginkel, Phillips and Biegel
    ILB: Baker and McKinney

That’s 11 players rotating in base, nickel and dime. We all know we’re going to see 5, 6 and 7 DB packages as well.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s a much improved group. Big difference from just 2-3 years ago

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yessir! Our DB talent and depth is as good as any team. They can also be involved with pass rush on blitzes. I think we’re building a monster on defense but it’s still a mostly young group. I’m psyched to see it develop.

Yes! The potential is there. But results are all that matters. The 2021 team is not the same as the 10-6 2020 team. I think it has more potential, but it hasn’t happened yet.

We all know a lot of this rides on what will Tua be. He knows that too. That’s what being a QB is all about.

  33. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I see AVG to this team as KVN was to the cheats D, in that they’re scheme players.

Sure they can move around and play different positions, but their value is in how they’re used.

You play them straight up anywhere, like you see done in preseason or Wanny’s vanilla Ds of the past and they’re JAGS.

Not trying to take anything away from him, just pointing out what I see.

Think AVG will have a big year, and think he gets more sacks than Phillips

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Some of his success will depend on X playing, and how the O plays.

If the O takes a step back, X is traded, then I don’t see much coming from AVG, but if things progress as expected from the team overall, then lookout he could have that breakout season.

Point being a lot of his stats success will depend on what the team does.

For example how many ints did X have in 2019, when the team sucked. That’s taking it to the extreme, just showing its a team game and he’s a team player

  34. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

“The Dolphins’ record will depend on Tua Tagovailoa and the young QB erasing the doubts surrounding him. There is no more Ryan Fitzpatrick to save the day. That role would fall to Jacoby Brissett, and the guess here is the former Colt eventually sees a lot of action. Miami should scramble with New England for second or third in the AFC East. Record: 9-8″ — Barry Werner, The List Wire

Typical of what I expect from a U75, that didn’t do his homework.

Just as with AVG, Tua’s success will depend more on what the team does as a whole, than how he progresses.

Tua wasn’t good last year against the Rams, but the D made it easy for him to play game manager.

Don’t expect to see that type of play week in week out from the D, but do expect a more well rounded group, that is better in run D, a d QB pressure.

From the O the 3 2020 rookie OL should be at least a little better, the WRs will for sure be better, and the RBs can’t be much worse, even though there were some bright spots from Gaskun and Achmed.

With these team improvements, Tua being fully healthy and supposedly having better understanding of playbook, why does he need to erase the doubts surrounding him for the team to be better?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If Tua takes the next step, as I expect he will, and the team progresses as a whole like I pointed out above we could win 13 or 14 games.

We don’t need Tua to take the next step to make the playoffs, we just can’t have him regress

  35. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Xavien Howard only played 5 games in 2019 so I’m not sure he could have been that successful anyway.

  36. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

An interesting comment from a reporter: “If Tua Tagovailoa had Justin Herbert’s rookie season (or, cynically, had the Dolphins drafted Herbert), we’d be touting this team as a Super Bowl contender.”

Guess that says a lot about the rest of the team and what we can be if Tua shows it.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Except Herbert hasn’t showing he can win.

Years ago we saw Gabbert in Jax with gaudy numbers, mostly from garbage time, then the next season, when the team was supposed to compete he sucked.

Just saying it’s different playing on a good team in high pressure situations.

Think Herbert also needs to be able to adjust once the league has adjusted to him, and since he’s been using his feet for a lot of his success, instead of sitting in the pocket, he’ll need to prove he can read a D.

He’s done great so far, but his hardest test still to come

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Think the guy was telling the truth, but then reporters love gaudy numbers. One thing in the article was that a guy like Gabbert sets in quicker in the league than a passer.

If we keep 7 Grant would likely stick, but I’d rather see Foster make it.

Could see Grant, Hurns and Hollins playing for another team and maybe Foster

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Think they will keep 7, but not sure that will be Grant. Would like to see Malcolm Perry land on a roster instead of shipping out to sea. Best case on our practice squad.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Perry was a good college player, but his skills don’t really matchup with the NFL.

After 5 or 6 years in the league he may be that crafty vet, but he’s just a guy, and don’t think we can afford to let him develop on the 53

There is a new giant waive of migrants heading to the boarder. The WH is so concerned about COVID that it is suspending Title 42 which is a regulation used by the CDC to block migrants from entering the country for public health reasons. Pandemic anyone?!?

UK and Israel have some of the highest vaccination rates in the world

Of course they have higher rates of vaccinated people being hospitalized – they have higher rates of people who are vaccinated

Places that rain a lot also have the highest rate of wet seats too

I don’t know how you guys twist yourself into pretzels to draw really bad conclusions

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I haven’t read the stats on those. Just conclusions, which am guessing someone else picked and chose. What was not there was the stats. And yeah am guessing if everyone is vaccinated the only people who get hospitalized are just that.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The data I am hearing is that people who are vaccinated are less likely to get gravely ill from the delta variant

        MIT published this

        https://medical.mit.edu/covid-19-updates/2021/07/deltas-here

But you still can spread delta pretty easily

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It’s still just data at the end of the day

That can change In time and I bet it will given the limited time people have to study it so far

We are asking scientists to study and give us their best conclusions based on what’s available

Lashing out at Dr Fauci, the CDC and others bc the data available changes is just a rudimentary lack of understanding of how science works. I don’t think you are going to persuade people to follow the science when they are inherently inclined to reject science bc it’s inconvenient to them and they already believe something else

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not one doubt in the world that if you are vaccinated and in the US that with rare exception don’t go to the hospital or die. Still can get it though. Apparently the vaccine doesn’t work as well in other countries.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        I don’t know about that

60% of the people in UK hopsitals are unvaccinated

        https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/60-people-being-admitted-uk-hospitals-had-two-covid-jabs-adviser-2021-07-19/

What BBMike said is correct about 40%

But it’s probably not bc the vaccine is not effective
It’s bc the country has a high % of vaccinated people

So if 54% of the UK is vaccinated
And 60% of new delta cases are unvaccinated people

It’s pretty clear that the vaccine reduces the risk substantially

But it’s not a magic wand that makes everything go away Bc that’s a FUCKING FAIRY TALE!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Keep in mind that the UK is 80-some percent vaccinated before you do the math. So 20% of people are 60% and the other 80% are 40%. You took the SATs.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        I read 54%

        This says a little higher

        https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/vaccinations

I think 80% is the first dose only

It doesn’t matter though, you are drawing the same logical conclusion that I am

People who are unvaccinated are obviously much more vulnerable

If it’s 50, 60, 70 or 80% vaccinated, that’s a big chunk of the unvaccinated population being hospitalized

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I was going with this from the BBC a day ago, but they could be wrong.

“So far, more than 46 million people have had a first vaccine dose – almost 90% of the adult population – and more than 36 million – around two-thirds of adults – have had both doses.”

Team handball is a cool sport. Like a combo of Lacrosse and ultimate frisbee, you pass a ball downfield to your teammate. They have to catch it, if they drop it, the ball goes back to the other team. After catching the ball, I think you get 3 steps and then you have to pass. There’s a goalie and they have to stop some wicked shots because some people can really hurl that ball.
