Mike Gesicki – Will he be the Dolphins Franchise All Time Best?

Before this season begins, there are currently 8 TE’s that have more career receiving yards than Mike Gesicki. Of those TE’s, only 5 of them were drafted by the Dolphins. I’m sure you guys know who the leader is, he was the first TE to come to mind when I woke up and decided to write this article. Randy McMichael is the all time leading TE and he was drafted and played 5 seasons for the Dolphins. McMichael totaled 3096 receiving yards on 283 receptions and 18 TD’s. To me, those are very reachable numbers for Gesicki, but only if he gets a new contract. He’s on the last year of his 4 year rookie contract after being drafted #42 in RD 2 in the 2018 NFL Draft.

The other TE’s, if you’re wondering who are at the moment ahead of Mike Gesicki are Bruce Hardy (Drafted by Miami), Anthony Fasano, Keith jackson, Charles Clay (Drafted by Miami), Ferrell Edmunds (Drafted by Miami), Troy Drayton and Joe Rose (Drafted by Miami). Each season, Gesicki has increased his receiving yards and there’s no reason to expect that trend to stop this season. Throw out the rookie season where he was scarcely used, in his 2nd season he was targeted 89 times and had 51 receptions for 570 yards. In his 3rd season Gesicki’s targets went slightly down from 89 to 85 but he had 2 more receptions and 133 more receiving yards. I think a fair expectation for Gesicki this season would be 100 targets, 60 receptions and 800 yards. That would Mike as #3 All Time for the Dolphins. To me, the most important issue is re-signing Gesicki. Dolphins fans talk about how great our depth is at TE with Gesicki, newly drafted Hunter Long, Durham Smythe, Adam Shaheen, Chris Myarick etc., but no other TE is in the class of Gesicki here, not even close. He’s the guy we have waited for, the guy that has the size, speed, leaping ability and catch radius to beat any player trying to cover him.

If you think I’m blowing smoke, let me compare Gesicki to the best of the best. Travis Kelce was targeted 145 times last season, nearly 2 times more than Gesicki (89). Darren Waller was also targeted 145 times. If Gesicki was targeted that many times this season he would easily surpass all the other TE’s on the Dolphins All Time receiving list and would also make it impossible not to re-sign him. I’m not advocating for Gesicki to be targeted as much as those guys but I do think 100 targets wouldn’t be crazy. I would absolutely hate to see Gesicki move on from the Dolphins. I’m hoping we try and get him a new contract early on, because if he plays to his potential and we feed him enough targets, his next contract is going to be a huge one. Even if that’s the case, keep the best players on your team, especially when you draft them.

He’s worked on his blocking, and while he’s not the best in line blocking TE, the best never are. Travis Kelce doesn’t spend much time blocking and either does Darren Waller. The biggest exception to this would San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle who may be the best all around TE in the NFL. That guy is a tenacious blocker and also has the receiving talent to break a game open. Kittle regularly gets more than 100 targets in a season, and that’s where I feel Gesicki should be as well. I think Gesicki brings the same qualities to the table that Kelce, Waller, Kittle, Pitts, Goedert and Andrews bring. Kyle Pitts was drafted #4, Gesicki #42. Pitts is faster but Gesicki trumps Pitts with his superior vertical ability. I’m looking forward to seeing Gesicki join the ranks of the best this season with more targets and more production. Pay that man his money!

GO DOLPHINS !!

Has to be something more to the story about what he did than that. Did they draft Cecil Collins 2.0?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The team probably knows he’s guilty.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He turned himself in back in April when it happened so apparently he owned it. Now that’s he’s been indicted the team felt they had to move on from him. Domestic violence is too damaging for sports teams or corporations etc. to sweep under the rug.

“Gladney, 24, had been accused of hitting, choking and dragging his then-girlfriend across the ground near Dallas during an incident that began in a vehicle the night of April 1.”

        Sounds like Ray Rice 2.0.

  5. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, Gladney is going to prison if convicted which it sounds like he will be.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

That would make the team’s decision more easy. Having read more , my rough guess is that he gets like 6 months plus home release on parole /probation. So yeah he’ll be a FA again.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        Would you sign him?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’d sign someone like that if he was real good and the price was cheap. If I was GM Kareem Hunt would have been in our backfield the last two years.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not that what Kareem Hunt did was okay, but that wasn’t isolated to just him assaulting a woman, that was a brawl and he was being attacked as well. This one sounds more like what Ray Rice did and we all know he was never on a team again. If what Gladney did was like what Ray Rice did, I’d never have him on my team.

I didn’t mean the Phins signing him, I was just asking if you would if you were a GM of a team. I don’t think we’ll touch him nor do we need him.

An Axios/Ipsos poll released Tuesday on who unvaccinated people blame for the current Covid surge:

1 – 37% blame people traveling to the U.S. from other countries,
    2 — 27% mainstream media,
3 — 23% Americans traveling to other countries,
    4 — 21% Biden ,and
    5 — 10% the unvaccinated.

You sorta have to give up at that point.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We live in age of overloaded information, misinformation, agendas and statistics. No wonder the trust level is down for so many people. Not just COVID but everything. We went through 4 years of people feeling our president was just like Hitler. Everything is extreme. Everyone barks at each other about everything. I’m right you’re wrong. The end.

As for follow the science, that’s been compromised too. People use specific science for their own agendas. Just like lawyers in courts use their own professionals to aid their client’s cause. It’s not always about justice and what’s right, but winning. As a society we have amped that up in every phase of life.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yep — it’s like truth and logic don’t matter anymore…. only selfish wants of how reality to be. In that same poll 70–some percent of the vaccinated blamed the unvaccinated. Obviously those folks live in two most very different worlds.

Man, I really enjoyed catching up on the board today and reading a ton of camp stuff. Thanks, Wyo!!

    My thoughts:

It sounds like today was the defense’s day. When the pads come on the defense brings its game.

Every time I see Calin Munson’s name, all I can think of is Kingpin “I’d rather be Munsoned out here in the middle of nowhere…”, lol.

Family Circus- “What’s the magic word to get what you want?”
    “I’m offended.” LMAO!!

For this being our first practice in full pads, it’s surprising how many guys are dinged up. Hopefully it’s just guys getting bodies into football shape and a sign of intensity, not fragility.

I get cross training guys on the oline, and I understand we don’t know who will be starting where yet, but it sure would be nice to have a solid starting 5 and let them develop some chemistry in training camp for once.

Another practice Tua doesn’t throw an INT. He hasn’t thrown one since Wed of last week. Today was all about the run game, but he still threw some balls out there without a pick. Hopefully he can keep up this string of good practices. It’s been great to hear about the improvement, can’t wait to see him in preseason game one!!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It sounded like it was a balanced performance to me. Both sides of the ball won and lost some. That’s the way you want it. Competition.

The standout player seemed to McKinney though. They said he was all over the ball and in the backfield. I don’t think we should just think he’s a 2-down LB. One report I read said he’ll be out there a lot whether we have 3 or 4 LBs on the field. It doesn’t seem we view him as a 2-down or situational LB. If you look at his tackles per game over 16 games it equals 106. That’s not a guy who comes off the field a lot.

  12. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I like the McKinney signing. From everything I’ve read about him, it sounds like he’s a really smart leader of a defense. He will help get guys doing the right things and making the right adjustments….and that’s no small thing in a defense like Flores runs. But, he isn’t very good in coverage. He simply isn’t that sort of LB. If he’s in on 3rd downs, I still don’t think they’ll ask him to cover a lot. If teams can start taking advantage of him on 3rd downs and MAKE him cover somebody, then I don’t think he’ll stay in on 3rd downs much. All the video I’ve watched of him after we signed him doesn’t show much of any coverage skill. 15 years ago, maybe but not in today’s NFL. I still think he can make this defense better though. He should help our run defense immediately.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Thanks so much Randy for discussing the finer points of football. 🙂

McKinney not being a top cover guy doesn’t mean he’s not on the field attacking the LOS. We act like he’s just a thumper ILB. He can also blitz and be a part of stunts. He’s a big LB at 6-4 255+ with long arms and good speed. We may have him on the field when it’s not Van Ginkel or say Phillips, or over Biegel. I don’t think we’re viewing him properly.

I think the team views him as a Dont’a Hightower type LB. He’s not a very good cover LB either.

    Thump Thump
He’ll stay on the field on third down as a pass rusher he won’t be covering anybody

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

McKinney is a seek and destroy LB. He reminds me of the type of LBs the Giants had back in the 80’s – big, physical with good speed but not necessarily cover guys. Today’s game utilizes so much quickness you’re not gonna have LBs like him covering them. He’ll drop in zone from time to time. But we’re not going to say go cover Travis Kelce all day. LOL

He’s panned out as a proven LB in the NFL. He only played in 4 games last year due to a shoulder injury so he’s kind of under the radar. The guy has been very good when he’s on the field for 6 seasons. He was part of the Texans being a really good defense when they were. He really had nothing to do with last year.

Benardrick McKinney shines as Dolphins embrace the trenches at camp

“Miami, generally speaking, took the air out of the ball at practice today. With the pads on, it was a great time to focus on the trenches and the intensity of full contact as a part of the team’s evaluation process. There’s been plenty of high-flying action in 7 on 7s to this point in training camp but today was dedicated, unofficially, to winning in the trenches.”

“McKinney and the rest of the front seven won the day.”

  19. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Some Skura stuff:

Center Matt Skura – who started 51 games at center for Baltimore over the past four years – expressed no frustration or disappointment about playing with the second and third team during the first six practices of camp. Michael Deiter has been the starting center every day, and Cameron Tom got some second-team work on Tuesday.

“It’s always about competition,” Skura said. “That’s one of the reasons why I signed here. Nothing is just going to be given to you. Even when I’ve started a bunch in Baltimore, like every season you wipe the slate clean. You’ve got to earn your keep.”

Skura said he worked all offseason to fix the snapping problems that led to his benching in Baltimore last season and believes he has solved it.

“Pretty much since January, almost every day, I’m trying to get snaps just because yeah, it was an issue last year,” he said. “I felt like going into this camp, I’ve definitely been able to turn that corner and now I can just focus on playing football and having fun. It’s definitely been something I’ve been working on and something that I just want to continue to be consistent with.”

Piggy, the reason people slept on McKinney was 2020 and Bill O’Brien destroying that team the last two years. We don’t know what the Watson situation is yet, but they are headed as the new team tanking for someone. They had a fire sale and are totally in rebuilding mode. All their best players are gone.

  21. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I find it funny when teams rotate players in camp especially on the OL and reporters think it’s significant – 1st, 2nd and 3rd team. How many years have we seen this with teams looking to see how player groupings work together? They’re looking for the top 5. It happens every fuckin year. LOL

Our situation is very young. Competition! Fluker already couldn’t stick.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It especially happens when your oline has been pretty bad so it is in constant flux like ours has been the last decade. The difference this year is once we get that starting 5, we may actually have 4 or even 5 starters that carry over for some years.

I think it’s hilarious that reporters have basically already cut Kindley since he’s been working with the 3s, lol.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’ll be with the 1s again this week and the reporters will have to change their panties. LOL

It’s training camp!!!!! All these reporters who have said I’ve been covering this team for this many years etc. still fall into the amateur trap every fuckin year. LOL

Coaches look at combinations of players. How else would you know who’s the real deal? This guy is good no matter who he goes against. That’s how the Gaskin, Seiler and Van Ginkel types earn their stripes.

  22. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

If Skura doesn’t start he’ll be cut he wasn’t brought here to be a backup he’s here to measure Deiter’s progress. The yips sour confidence sad but true.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

      He’s only got 400k guaranteed…

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

There is something to that. Don’t know enough about our depth at center though. But definitely rooting for Deiter because we drafted him. I think a lot of us all wanted to see him be a part of our OL as a 2019 3rd round pick. It’s his 3rd season. Maybe he’s in his zone or he’ll be a crotchety 25 year old in September as father time clicks away. 😉

  23. Randy's avatar Randy says:

You start games…you don’t start practices. They’re still trying to figure out the OL. That’s what practice is for. Find those 6 or 7 guys you can rely on and get guys experience at multiple positions because it’s rare these days for a team to play 5 OL all season long.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

You’d think our media would be used to seeing these guys all over the place in training camp since we’ve been dealing with this for years. Sure, if you’re Cleveland you don’t have Conklin, Bitonio, and Tretter working with the 3s, lol.

When you’re the Dolphins, and you don’t have a single starter penciled in at any oline position yet, you mix and match because you have to figure out what you have, lol.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Absolutely! OL need to do more than one thing. We hear that from every coach every year. Lots of position players need to do more than one thing. That’s how we get to 53.

The youth we have is the key. They are the foundation. We’ve got some solid vets, but the youth is where the special is supposed to come from.

  28. on the sixth day of practice, Albert part time wilson practiced sparingly,

hes nursing an injury, and nursing a paycheck that he cant earn,

its incredible that the team keeps paying him, he is the most injury prone WR i have ever seen, or known of
the team is deep at WR< im hoping for the good of the team WIlson gets cut

because the final 53 will be the final 52 if Wilson makes it, obviously he will be injured all season as usual

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

“Wide receiver Albert Wilson, one of the stars of the first week of training camp, had a modified day Tuesday, managing workload.”

Not an injury. He balled his ass off all the first week. Coaches were giving him a little break since they were focusing mostly on the run game.

  29. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I think you guys MAY be discounting the Kindley’s “Demotion” too much. Coaches do use “starts” in practice as a motivator sometimes. Yes, they are mixing and matching trying to find the best 5. Yes, it is just practice. However, we don’t know if it is a message from the coaches or just a random coincidence of the shuffling. I haven’t read anywhere that his spot on the 53 is in jeopardy only that he may get passed up as a starter.

Hopefully everyone is “right” when Kindley takes the motivation and uses it to work his way back into the starting 5 and the defenders can say “see they were just mixing things up cross training” and the others can say “see, the motivation worked”

    • D's avatar D says:

Wouldnt you be equally reading too much into it? Just sayin. He hasn’t had a chance to “lose” or “win” the job, so why would he go from a player who played well last year to losing the job this year? Most likely they are playing people for the idea that everyone has to win their position, and most likely they are trying different lineups at the position where competition still exists (ie all positions outside of LT) i dont know how you could see it one way or the other, as much as we might be playing it on the cup half full you are certainly suggesting its half empty instead and at this point its just observational based upon very limited knowledge of what’s going on behind closed doors.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I did say MAY and even capitalized it! I am not arguing that up is down or left is right. I was just pointing out that just because he started last year doesn’t necessarily mean there isn’t SOME SPECIFIC REASON the coaches have moved him to the 2’s &3’s. Just a pump the brake warning, not an argument that I am right and others wrong. The entire discussion is speculative. THAT was my point.

  30. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Wilson will absolutely be on the 53. He has been consistently the most explosive WR in camp this offseason.

  31. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Think at times the beat reporters just report what they see at camp…so and so was on the second team today, then moved to third team

Then someone reads it and says, don’t they know it’s just practice and they’re moving guys around to find the best fit?

Surely Omar likes to stir the pot at times, but we can’t take it for granted he does it every time.

WTFDIK, just think we read things in at times, that aren’t there

  34. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

BBM, I think that is curious too. Why cancel two years off the contract? They WERE going to owe 8.75M next season and 9.5M in ’23. Now we are paying him 3M this year and he gets to shop his talent next season.

I guess they turned it into a “show me” season.

  35. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

D, like Steve said. McKinney had 3 years left on his contract worth up to 27.5 mil We restructured his deal to 1 year at 3 mil and now will be a F/A in 2022.

  36. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The McKinney restructure sure was strange, especially a guy that seems to have been brought in to be our Hightower type of run stuffer, and can do everything above avg, except cover.

Wonder, if his injury from last year is still a concern.

But he sure tore it up yesterday

Even at this stage of camp, when guys could be cheating drills (coach says yes it does happen), there’s still an opportunity to evaluate technique and fundamentals. A player might think it was clean but they can sometimes see when guys anticipate things they’ve already seen.

On Jakeem Grant: There’s a lot of value in having an explosive returner who can flip the field and even score. Jakeem is very explosive and productive not only as a returner but as a receiver as well. We’re happy to have him. There’s a lot of competition in that room.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

On Grant, is he trade talking him up?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They should use their platform to speak out about the things that are important to them.

Don’t agree, because it’s bad for business, but if they must, they really need to be better educated on the facts and so far they haven’t done that.

Most of them have been lazy, just regurgitating the narrative

  39. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

With McKinney and Phillips we seemed to have fixed our 2 biggest Qs on D, but there’s still one thing that lingers even assuming X plays this year, and that’s Xs production coming close to last year’s.

Repeating his 10 ints is very unlikely, but if he isn’t close in ints, because they aren’t throwing his way, that might be better.

If they aren’t throwing at X or Jones we’ll have WRs 1 and 2 shutdown, that leaves the rest of the back 7 to focus on the other 3 receivers and if the pass rush is getting it done those other 3 may be reduced to 1 or 2.

What we’ve seen so far in camp is a leaky secondary, does that change with the pads on?

  40. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I didn’t realize that was how Mckinney’s restructure went. That seems pretty odd to take a paycut and drop two years off the contract. Well, good for us, he’ll be highly motivated this season.

The man breaking down the huddle of Miami Dolphins receivers before Tuesday’s practice? Not DeVante Parker or Will Fuller because they’re still nursing injuries. Not Jaylen Waddle because he’s a rookie.

It was veteran Albert Wilson. And he did it in appropriate fashion.

“Playmakers on three,” Wilson implored the group.

Makes sense. Because as receivers who were NFL starters in past years — Parker, Fuller, and second-year receiver Preston Williams — have missed a majority of the Dolphins training camp so far, Wilson has been present for all of them.

And he’s been the most explosive playmaker on the field.

  42. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Here’s what else Flores said on Wednesday before the seventh practice of training camp:

    ▪ Flores downplayed Christian Wilkins playing behind Zach Sieler in two of the first three days of practice.

“He always had juice, sometimes too much juice,” Flores said, smiling, of Wilkins. “We like Christian’s energy, his juice, his theatrics. There’s ones, there’s twos. Everyone is competing. Sieler has done a good job. We’ll continue to roll guys against different players. Both guys are working hard. Pleased where both guys are.”

    ▪ With the addition of Adam Butler, Flores seems comfortable with the number of pass rushers he can rotate in and out on his defensive line.

“Our guys are in good shape; it’s hot,” he said. “Our ability to roll guys in and out of the game is important. I feel good about that group. Adam is tough, smart, loves to play, competitive. He fits in well with the group, good communicator.”

Butler has played with the second team throughout camp. He’ll likely get a lot of snaps.

    ▪ Receiver Jakeem Grant, in a battle to make the roster, drew praise from Flores. Jaylen Waddle’s addition could make Grant expendable.

“There’s a lot of value having an explosive returner,” Flores said. “Good field position. We all see the value in that. Jakeem is very explosive, productive, not only as a returner but as a receiver as well. We’re happy to have him. There’s a lot of competition in that room everyday.”

    ▪ Flores doesn’t mind the chippiness at practice this week.

“It’s a chippy game. It’s also a game where you have to keep your poise. It’s something we talk about as a staff. We know somebody is going to do a little too much. Your natural reaction is to react, fight back.

“We have to keep our poise, we have to practice that. Inevitably there will be some kind of fight on the field. We have to learn from it and get better. We try to use it as a learning experience because if it happens in the game, it could be costly.”

Linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel, who left practice with a slight limp on Tuesday, sat out Wednesday’s session. Flores called him day to day.

    ▪ Xavien Howard (ankle) remained sidelined. Will Fuller (foot) and Jaelan Phillips (lower body) also were not practicing, though Phillips was working on the side.

Flores has indicated the Fuller injury isn’t serious, but he has missed a week and is doing no conditioning on the field.

Running back Malcolm Brown and cornerback Cre’Von LeBlanc were not immediately spotted by reporters.

Teams have contacted the Dolphins about Howard, but no team has offered what the Dolphins would consider to be enough in compensation to strongly consider it.

    ▪ DeVante Parker (hamstring) returned to practice.

  43. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Vets sitting out during camp doesn’t bother me, especially on D, because they don’t need the mental reps, just some physical reps to get ready.

If they aren’t on the field they won’t get injured there

  44. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Forget all these practice tweets. I want to see this team on the field for real already. I want us to put the Womack on the Patriots week one and never look back. Remember, Tua’s a lefty. So left is right and right is left, bud.

    • D's avatar D says:

they run as many counters and traps from one side as another, and Kindley is surprisingly fleet of foot despite his size. Again, he played LG in the most competitive college football environment at an first team level. There isn’t anything that would prevent him from playing well at that spot. Right side Left side concepts are out of the windows these days, they have to be to mix up the playbook and keep the D guessing.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yeah, I don’t disagree with ya on that in the new era. I was only speaking in the traditional sense.

      • D's avatar D says:

I think traditions are pretty gone at this point, just like x y z receiver, HB/TE blending, just so much has evolved these things kind of lost their meaning. Hell RT is as important as LT these days and maybe even more so to us. Offenses dont use ZBS or Power blocking, they have flexible styles, some hybrid even, RB and TE’s lined out wide, which never happened before, just a whole gaggle of different things have changed to where i doubt there is one offense thats traditional in many if any ways.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Great takes on it by you guys and thanks. I was thinking answer might be we just weren’t really doing the designated pulling guard in this OL scheme, but was just a thought. Especially cause not seeing Hunt as all that nimble and quick either.

      • D's avatar D says:

Kindley is huge but he is cat like. Like Wilfork dude had a belly that made him look like he has always just eaten a couple of children, but he was fleet. Kindley isnt straight line fast but his foot movement means he can get down the line quick. I dont think he is a liability in running those plays. Hunt is actually pretty fast, or he has amazing technique, maybe a good balance of both. He made protecting against Bosa and Mercilus look like he had been doing this for years. I was really impressed with him that game. It seemed to me he had the most issues with guys who could flip a speed more into a power move, like he kind of got himself a step ahead of them so when they flipped to a power move he didn’t have the position/leverage to fend them off. He struggled against Williams and the Jets. Even just straight up power moves he didn’t seem like he had leverage and Williams just walked him up until he lost leverage.

      • D's avatar D says:

Ill quote Gimli on Kindley. “We dwarves are natural sprinters! Very dangerous over short distances!”

  63. D's avatar D says:

I know everyone wants to play with the new Shiny toy in Eichenberg but we havent seen anything of him yet, they literally just had the first pads on practice, and OL nor DL can be evaled in non pads practices. I dont know who winds up playing where, other than its where the coaches choose to put them and who they choose to start. I also dont know if that changes before the end of the year, again, coaches know their plan, i dont so its gonna be, like Rock said, the best group of the best players. Nothing that has happened so far solidifies anyone at any spot except maybe Jackson because he really doesnt have a guy challenging him for anything. The rest of the spots are at a point of competition and the best man will be in there, just trust the process.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It would just be good if Eichenberg won a starting job. However the best 5 whoever they are will have earned it.

      • D's avatar D says:

I think what most like about them starting right off is it validates the pick and if they dont people get nervous about the pick. Just gotta learn to let the process take its time.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I agree. You know me, I’m patient. 😉

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Want Eich to win the starting tackle job. If he ends up at guard long-term then we drafted him too high. And Davis can play guard.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Right there with ya, Stanger. Hope that Eich wins a starting Tackle position.

      • D's avatar D says:

I doubt if he starts at RG he would stay there but its probably a lot better if he starts inside if we want him to play right off. If we are willing to let him cook a few games, then transition to RT then straight into the OT position sounds ok. I still think Hunt has shown to be good there, better than other we have on the team, so if i were them it would be a battle for RT between he and Hunt, both spend time playing RG as well and then one goes one spot one goes the others, and Davis holds it down for Eichenberg until they deem him ready. Not forcing round peg into square hole, just take the time to find the right spot.

  64. D's avatar D says:

I love the draft, but the one thing i dont like about it is when we get new players everyone wants them in there over this guy or that guy, and really what it boils down to is we get so wrapped up in the new beginnings aspect and the hope of these players that most of us follow at least a full year before the draft, that we are kind rooting for a player to play so we can watch them than we are the team fielding the best player.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I always want drafted players to succeed. No better way to build a great team than to draft well and have them become successful NFL players. Any time you have to go outside of the draft whether it’s a trade or FA there is the likelihood of overpaying or giving up too much in a trade. I would also selfishly like to see a young line of Jackson – Kindley – Deiter – Hunt – Eichenberg because they can play together as a unit for a long time.

  65. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“Yeah, I mean, I’ve never thought about being traded or anything like that. I want to be here. Of course I want to be here. I’ve been here six years, and I wouldn’t have agreed to an extension if I wanted to be somewhere else. I love being here. I’ve got a lot of good friends here, and so my main thing is just continue to go out there and show what I got.”
    — Jakeem Grant, who seems like a good guy.

    • D's avatar D says:

Yeah i have always liked the persona of Grant, always smiling, loves life it seems, and seems to be excitement to ever day. Id hate losing him, the person and for the most part the kick returner, but god those fumbles are scary. It literally is a hold your breath moment when its late int he game and we really need a spark and the ball is kicked to him and its like he could literally win this or lose this right now with a homerun return or a fucking fumble that will put the nail in our coffin.

  66. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, why is drafting an OL in the 2nd round who could end up at guard taking him too high?

    • D's avatar D says:

Well and wasn’t Hunt a 2nd rounder? Isn’t it going to be the same scenario if we kick Hunt inside for Eichenberg to play outside?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I will say this though. When I was posting our draft picks for next year the other day I did not realize we traded our 2022 3rd to move up to draft Eichenberg. So we do not have two 3rd round picks, just the one we got from the SF trade.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Cause least in my mind we were set with Kindley and Hunt as the guards for years to come. And then we traded up hard in the 2nd to take a tackle. And both those future guards have been lining up at guard in camp. And yeah tackles go for more.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kindley and Hunt are potentially set at guard but far from years to come. I think Eichenberg will eventually be a tackle for us though.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I really like Kindley and Hunt…..why do you think might not be the future?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I saw enough last year to think both will be kick-ass guards, but only my opinion of course. My only concern is Kindley staying in shape.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Are there concerns about Kindley staying in shape or is it just that he’s very big and that’s why people think it’s an issue?

It’s been brought before in the press Tim, but not sure if for the reasons you mention. Might be nothing, but then he’s been playing with the back-ups a bunch this camp too.

Ok let me may my formal argument. Just for reference I’m using NFL.com’s player reviews for both as reference.

    https://www.nfl.com/prospects/robert-hunt/32004855-4e36-0894-8461-dd1b950e2536

Just based on measurements, Hunt has longer arms and bigger hands, both are traits that benefit an OT more so than an OG. His strengths of size with athleticism, That along with the other pluses they mention show he has great technique at the position as well. He does have experience at OG so maybe we benefit as a team of having him there, if Eichenberg cant play there, but overall if you look at his strengths, you see OT and when you look at his weaknesses you see weak at OG.

    https://www.nfl.com/prospects/liam-eichenberg/32004549-4320-7645-4976-bd415010c029

Smaller hands, shorter arms are both things that wouldn’t hurt him as much at OG. Lots of positive marks as a run blocker as far as turning the guy he is blocking out of the running lane, good upper body control, etc. These are attributes that could make him a really good OG. Likewise his shortcoming all were pointed at the pass protection aspect of his game, slow kick slide indicating his feet aren’t as good as Hunts, and he can give them a good pop initially but loses them on their secondary efforts to go around him. These limitations are less apparent as an OG. Personally id really like to see him inside and be a mauler, his upper body strength and ability to seal out the run lanes would give us a great person to crack open the DL giving our RBs a chance to hit through the LOS and make their first cut.

Again, i know the media is touting him the new RT, im just not seeing why when we already have a guy who has decently proven himself already there with a partial year under his belt.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Least from the camp reports, they do have Hunt playing at guard. And they have had a season plus to get to know his play. But heck they have had Eich playing guard a bunch too. They sure do love Jessie Davis.

  74. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So as Tua Tagovailoa enters his second season, reporters who have watched practice have reported noticing the QB uncorking more shots than he did as a rookie. Head coach Brian Flores was asked about it in his Wednesday press conference.

“I think it’s something he’s placed an emphasis on,” Flores said. “We’ve placed an emphasis on not pushing the ball downfield, but taking advantage of those opportunities if they’re there. But like always, we want to have good fundamentals, good techniques, good mechanics, go through his progression. And if it’s there and it’s open, or we can throw him open, then take a shot. We’re not going to make them if we don’t throw them. So I think he’s taking more shots downfield and hopefully, he’s gaining more confidence and can make some of those throws.

“But at the same time, not every throw is going to be a 50 yarder, or 60 yarder. So we’ve got to make good decisions. Check it down when we need to check it down, throw the intermediate route when we need to throw the intermediate route, you’ve got to throw it away and take the incompletion when you need to do that. And you just need reps. So we’re just trying to give him as many reps as possible — that’s the same with all the quarterbacks, Jacoby [Brissett], Reid [Sinnett], really all players at all positions. But specific to Tua and the downfield throws, that’s my take on it.”

The thing I really like about Tua is even though he’s not an elite runner, he does have the feet for waggles, bootlegs and some scrambles where he can quickly stop, setup and throw it anywhere. That’s the thing I see time and time again. He’s got that compact build and it looks like his legs are stronger. Much more torque so far on his throws.

Tim – There was a time when I used to go to Wendy’s a lot, probably about 15 years ago. They had a chicken sandwich called the Monterey Ranch Chicken Sandwich. It was a crispy chicken cutlet topped with spicy ranch sauce and Monterey cheese. It was great, and then they took it off the menu. They’d bring it back for a limited time and just about everyone on line was ordering it. I never understood why they took it off the menu. Now they have a few sandwiches just like it so it doesn’t matter but it never made sense to me that so many people wanted that sandwich but they took it off the menu

Stanger, they’ve been in camp for just over a week. We all know that coaches move players around with different groupings. There is no depth chart this early in TC. It’s about reps and getting ready to play games. We probably won’t know who the starters and significant role players will be for a couple of weeks. Obviously we know who some of them will be.
    —————————————————————————————
Kinda whjat im saying, i dont think he will start at RT (Hunt) but i think he is ideally the guy, at least for now until someone shows up to support the narrative that it should be Eichenberg. Both have been at OG at practices, both have potential at either position. My thought is since \its established what he brings at RT they wish to see how he would do at OG and Eichenberg as well, they are not set anywhere but LT, and i think thats mostly due to being challenged, Jackson doesn’t really have many challengers, thats their lock position and it looks like that they are trying other players at other ones. The only posuition that seems to be clear cut is LT.

I think also he is getting open receivers. Its hard to cover when ya have a Wilson, and Waddle, sprinkle in Grant who occasionally gets loose, and Fuller when he is back, its going to be more deep throws because will be more opportunities to be. I don’t think this is a different Tua, i do think he has put in work to improve on it, but i think the big change is we went from a group of receivers that has trouble getting open deep to a handful of them on our team now. Flo stuck to the topic of Tua but to me the more likely changes was how many burners who also run good routes we have.

Lol the ones in Hattiesburg and Laurel are really thuggy and in bad areas or at least on the edge of bad areas. Not the same everywhere. When i was younger, before Popeyes had become a widespread chain, Churches was the place in the Panama City Florida area and it was amazingly run and clean and great employees, so i think its probably the management in the other places. We have one in Lucedale, and its not thuggy, but its not as well run as the Popeyes. slower service, quality just not quite top notch either. Their biscuits though are amazing.I know the owner of the Laurel location and i think he might own some of them in Hattiesburg area, but he is pretty hands off on the running of the stores though he will make an appearance occasionally, they seem to be at peak performance on those days but it slips right back down when he isn’t. He doesn’t have to put much effort to rake in the money from those places. Their locations for getting people to frequent it isn’t hindered at all.

Picking which WR will make the final roster is tough. I think they keep 7 WR, 3 TE, 3 RB, 2 QB. I think Williams goes on PUP for 6-weeks or IR-designated to return. My WR picks (today, based on 1 week of camp) are:
    Locks
    Parker
    Waddle
    Fuller
    Wilson
    Likely
    Hollins (ST gunner)
    Foster (ST gunner)
    Bubble for the 7th
    Grant
    Bowden

    TE are:
    Gesicki
    Smythe
    Long

    • D's avatar D says:

You have Williams gone, which i don’t disagree with. He is a good receiver but we have about the same guy in Parker. I also lean toward no Hollins keeping Foster and Bowden. I think we keep 4 TE’s, maybe Hollins could fill that role, he move more like a receiving TE than a true receiver anyways.

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I think Hollins or Foster can step in when Parker gets hurt. Don’t think Hollins is big enough to play TE – 6″4′ / 221 / 4.58 40. Bowden might get the nod over any of the three non-locks because he can be a true passing threat in the wildcat. Grant has speed but questionable hands. Like I said tough decisions. Rest of camp will be interesting – see if any of them separate.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I tend to think Williams is going to make the cut too

I’m not sure how I feel about keeping foster and Hollis just for their special teams skill set

Do we need 2 wrs to be special teams aces – for special teams we can pull from our DBs as well, among other positions

How much do you know or have heard about the democrats asking for a “National Mileage Tax” on everyone based on how many miles you drive to pay for the massive infrastructure spending bill?

Isn’t this taxing the people who make under 400k that they said they wouldn’t do, either directly or indirectly?

Won’t this affect tourism in country? I mean I drive anywhere I go within a 12 hour drive.

Won’t this drive up costs of Uber, takeout delivery and basically everything you buy at a store that gets delivered by truckdrivers?

They say they are going to track this by:
    – car internet collected by automakers
    – Motor vehicle data collected by insurers
    – Third party diagnostic services
    – Smartphone Apps
    – Motor vehicle data from gas stations
or “Any other method the Secretary deems necessary

Isn’t this more monitoring/tracking of where we go and what we do?

Pete Buttigieg said they weren’t going to do this but now it is in the bill.

Am I jumping the gun and shouldn’t worry about it?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Reason for the Mileage Tax is more and more people are going electric. Standard way to tax people for their road use was the gas tax, but now some people don’t use gas.
