In the 2020-2021 offseason, the Miami Dolphins signed free agent C Matt Skura, who was not re-signed by the Ravens. I wasn’t a big fan of that move, I didn’t really have a lot of confidence in the Ravens castoff. Twofold reasoning here. When the Ravens let a guy go, there’s a reason. They are one of the best run franchises in the NFL and when they make personnel decisions, they’re usually correct. Unlike the move last year of bringing in former Patriot Ted Karras, this one smelled of we missed out on who we really wanted but we need to take someone. In walks 2019 Miami Dolphins 3rd RD pick Michael Deiter, #78 overall.

Deiter played all 16 games of the 2019 season at LG with 15 game starts. He played 93% of the offensive snaps that season. You have to go back to 2018 for Skura where played 100% of the snaps and each year his play has decreased. Of course it’s easy to say that Deiter didn’t play much at all last season, but 2020 is a mulligan due to COVID-19. There’s no official status yet that Michael Deiter will be our starting C but it seems clear that they wouldn’t mind if it worked out that way. The former Wisconsin road grader will be given every opportunity to take the job, and I hope he does just that.

Coming out of Wisconsin, Deiter played both left guard, right guard and center with the majority coming at center. Deiter is a bit tall for a C at 6’5 but the Dolphins had Mike Pouncey here for years who was also 6’5. Deiter can win at the LOS but has some trouble with second level blocks. I’ll take winning at the LOS for now. Deiter’s draft rating was “Good backup who could become starter” OK Mike, take the job and run with it! Deiter is signed through next season so we can get a good look at him this season and then we have next season to either decide whether he’s our future center or whether we need to look for another. Skura has a 1 year contract which to me says he was just an insurance policy that the team would use if necessary for one season.

As far as the other camp battles, Austin Jackson appears to be a shoe in for the LT position while at LG, my choice for RT Liam Eichenberg has been getting lots of snaps. I wouldn’t read too much into it, I still firmly believe that Solomon Kindley will be the starting LG. Robert Hunt has been at RG where I feel he will be the starter and Jesse Davis has been getting reps at RT. All this is very fluid though, guys need to get reps in and once again, I feel it will be Jackson – Kindley – Deiter – Hunt – Eichenberg when the dust settles. I do think there’s an outside chance that Jesse Davis starts at RT early but I think/hope that Eichenberg takes the spot.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

I really would like to see Long get all the reps he can

But I don’t see him being a contributor to our team early in the season unless there is an injury

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Agree with that now but wouldn’t have before. But then seems he has popped up after getting killed like the QB Warren Beatty replaced in Heaven Can Wait.

I’d say just the opposite, before the injury would’ve liked to see him get all the reps he could, but now think they take it easy with him.

Not sure what to expect early in the season now, but if healthy think he can contribute early.

Travis Kelce without the top end skills, so maybe 85% of Kelce, which can be pretty good.

        Maybe more like Jason Witten

    – During a lightning delay, Tua Tagovailoa spent time with Miami’s defensive linemen.

    – Malcolm Brown took the first running back snap with first team.

    – Christian Wilkins was with Miami’s first-team defensive line.

    – Jason McCourty and Eric Rowe were Miami’s first-team safeties.

    – Tua Tagovailoa whipped a few sharp slants to Mack Hollins.

    – Hunter Long is on the sideline. Walking around pretty well. No brace or sleeve or anything.

    – Tagovailoa’s pass to Jakeem Grant was affected by extreme wind.

    – Akeim Hicks moved Robert Hunt in a 1-on-1 drill.

    – Jakeem Grant and Jaylen Waddle did a nice job handling punts in very windy conditions.

    – Khalil Mack stuffed Myles Gaskin on an inside run.

    – Robert Foster was unable to haul in a long pass from Jacoby Brissett.

    – Miami’s offensive line is still Austin Jackson-Liam Eichenberg-Michael Deiter-Robert Hunt-Jesse Davis.

    – Cornerback Javaris Davis had a nice breakup on a pass by Justin Fields.

    – Dan Marino is out here. I understand he led at least one important defeat of the Bears.

    – Xavien Howard recorded an interception but Emmanuel Ogbah was offside.

    – Shaquem Griffin had a sack.

    – Rookie Jevon Holland intercepted Andy Dalton over the middle.

    – Cre’Von LeBlanc had a pass breakup.

    – Raekwon Davis manhandled a Bears offensive lineman.

    – Gerrid Doaks had a drop.

    – Jamal Perry had an interception.

    – Tua Tagovailoa has a nice slant to Jaylen Waddle. And a strong crosser to Jakeem Grant.

    – Solomon Kindley got some first-team action at left guard.

    – Allen Hurns and Teez Tabor had some words.

    – Robert Foster made a nice sideline catch from Jacoby Brissett

Pocket collapses on Tua again. He’s holding the ball too long.
    _____________________________________________________

Yep, just like last year. he has to hold the ball, he can’t throw it over the guys in front of him.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You keep saying that but that’s not the case. Omar’s comment is also stupid – “Pocket collapses on Tua again. He’s holding the ball too long.” So he should just throw it as the pocket collapses and get picked off? Silly!

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

when he has to hold the ball too long with his limited size and semi sidearm release he gets stuck, he can’t get the ball off because of the obstacles in front of him. it’s not silly it’s a fact, see denver vs miami last year.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

ORob, you do realize that when a QB takes a snap he’s deeper in the pocket so the depth of vision changes right? If the pocket collapses and a QB can’t set his feet, they usually get sacked or throw an errant pass. It doesn’t matter if a QB is 6-6 in that scenario. That’s why pass pro is so important.

He’s not the first QB at 6-0/6-1. It’s about passing lanes, if you don’t block it up front, there are no passing lanes. His throwing motion is not side arm either, it’s what they call 3/4 which a lot of QBs have.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

after watching his putrid performance last year i asked myself what’s wrong? i went over his games and it would seem at certain times he can’t get the ball off, when he gets the ball and throws it right away he looks great, it’s when he holds onto the ball looking for 2nd options is when he gets in trouble, he gets stuck and can’t get the ball off, if you look at good QBs they get the ball over their head at the release point, he doesn’t. i’m just looking for answers as to why he struggled last year. i hope i’m wrong.

JUST COMPLETED 3 FULL DAYS AT WORK wearing the (God forbid) face mask. Our office normally has between 10-15 people in it during business hours, including more than a few who come here for just a brief period (delivery people, etc.). Proud to see I had NO shortness of breath or any other problems at all. A 13 step staircase connects the 2 floors. I take it every time I have to go to the boys room – – with no ill effects on me.

Also, I’m the ONLY person in the office who currently wears a mask. With covid numbers rising rapidly the last few days, I thought it prudent to don the mask so as to diminish the chances of taking home the virus or of transmitting the virus from home to work. As most of you know, my wife has had 10, count ’em, 10 surgeries plus a case of the covid – – so she DOESN’T need any more setbacks. And I’m recovering from cancer and two major surgeries in the last 3 years (plus a case of the covid), so, I know for a fact that my immune system is compromised. And I AM NOT ASSUMING that our two shots of Moderna will last forever. SO I’m being cautious, at least until I get the inevitable booster shot.

SOON, the Great Face mask debate will be addressed by the courts. My gut tells me that even the current Trump Supreme Court will uphold the right of health care facilities to demand covid shots and face masks as a requirement for those treating the sick. Requirements may, or may not, be upheld for our educational institutions as well. But I DON’T like Gov. Ron DeSantis’ chances of having his banning of masks in all schools upheld by the Supremes.

In a few days I and a co-worker will travel by car to a major convention just a bit up the road from Atlanta. A convention going on right now in Chicago IS REQUIRING full masks all day inside the publicly owned convention center. city police supposedly are ENFORCING THIS REQUIREMENT. Can’t wait to hear how conventioneers from the southern states react to this. Nor would I be surprised if several of them get arrested.

I remember way back in the 1970’s the reactions to required seat belt usage and open container laws which forbade consuming beer or hard liquor from open containers by anyone inside the car, especially the driver.

“They’ll get my open beer from me when they pry it away from my cold, clammy, hands” said an acquaintance of mine. “No, they won’t do that,” was my reply. I continued, “They’ll just fine the shit out of you until they have enough points on your record to confiscate your license,” I told him. That, in fact, was what happened. After losing his license, this redneck went driving with his favorite brew open right beside him. The judge threw the book at him, giving him 6 months in the slammer, plus an extra 6 months for punching a police officer who had arrested him.

It promises to be an interesting next few months on the legal front.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

You can really see the with stark contrast the change in culture that has occurred in that 1st game against the Jest. Fresh off of fucking up our team, Gase really did a number on NY. I’m not exaggerating when I say the Jest probably made more than a dozen mental errors in the 1st half alone, and it led to a 21-0 Dolphins lead that the Jest never recovered from.

  38. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Over the last 3 days I’ve rewatched the Jax, Niners, and 1st Jest games. Just a few takeaways:

Gaskin was a force the 1st quarter of the Jax game and the 1st half of the Jest game. He did it all, running, catching, getting extra yards, effective in the redzone. The Jax game, he basically single handedly got the yardage for our first score. It forced the Jags to adjust, and then opened up our passing game.

A big reason he was effective was our oline was opening holes, but he did his part as well. The oline was also effective in opening holes against the Jest in the 1st half. Gaskin isn’t going to create something on his own, he’s not that guy, but if the oline is effective, Gaskin can be too.

Howard and Jones played almost exclusively on their sides and did not shadow a particular receiver in any of the 3 games.

Adam Gase may be the worst coach in the history of the league. I don’t think the Jest are nearly as bad as their record last year. In the 1st game against us, it was mental error after mental error with that team. If Saleh is decent, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Jest make a jump, maybe even be around .500.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I’ve never been a big ugly, ugly maybe….lol.

IMO, it all starts up front on both sides of the ball.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Agreed. I was actually surprised to see how good our oline was in all three of those games.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I’m not sure what you mean by “create something on his own” but I saw him break plenty of tackles and elude defenders when the o-line broke down last year. Maybe we just differ in how we define that phrase. I just went through and watched his plays from the games you watched and I can see why you got that impression because we were opening up some room and it was nice to see.
I hope we can keep him fresh with the other guys in the running back stable, because he’s extremely efficient with the touches that he did get. I think our biggest problem last year for the run game was the inconsistent use of it as a whole. We lost 3 out of our first 4 games of the season and Gaskin had an average of 9 carries per game. I don’t think that’s a coincidence. We weren’t being blown out and he was over 4 yards per carry in all of them. He was at least being targeted with passes, so I can’t complain there, although I would have liked to see him get 1-2 targets more per game.
I don’t see the talent disparity between NFL teams as that big of a gap between the top teams and the lowest teams. I’ve said this for years. That’s why coaching is so important in this league. I definitely see the Jets as better with the subtraction of Adam Gase alone, so I wouldn’t be surprised that the Jets are a much tougher opponent. New England should definitely be tougher than last year. It’s going to be a tough season. Hopefully we’ve got the team that can rise above it.

  39. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Actually, that last statement about the Jest, I should qualify that. Their record will depend on their QB situation too, and if the rookie stinks they won’t sniff .500, but the team itself has more talent than their record last year.

  40. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    SB,

By create something on his own, I mean if the blocking isn’t there, he’s not going to make anything happen. So I think we’re talking about the same thing, but perhaps have different opinions.

A top end back will win some plays on his own even without good blocking, Gaskin doesn’t have the size or speed to make anything happen like that. When the blocking breaks down I haven’t seen him making something out of nothing in the run game in any of the games I’ve been watching.

That’s not to say he doesn’t run hard or with some power for his size. One thing he consistently does that impresses me, is he finishes runs well. He often gets a yard more than I’d expect as the play develops.

I see him as a quality all purpose back with decent speed and very good hands that’ll make plays in the passing game out of the backfield, and is a decent runner, but he doesn’t have elite elusiveness, speed, or power, and doesn’t create explosive plays. That’s not a knock, it’s just what I see.

I don’t think an offense has to have a top end back to be successful, and I think we’ll be fine with our stable of RBs.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

With that said, you have to pick where you want to spend your cap dollars and RB isn’t a spot where I want to spend too much, so the RBs we have are good enough.

Look at Gurley, Zeke, and Barkley, when healthy they make a difference, but they get hurt, then what do you do?

It’s OK to draft an RB in the 2nd, but I wouldn’t give him a 2nd contract

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I don’t see him as elite either, but he’s definitely on the borderline of the tier below that IMO. Like I said, I feel the failure in our run game last year was coaching in usage of our backs. Our top 3 RB’s averaged over 4ypc. If we can improve our situational football with the change at OC and growth from Tua, then I think we should be in a pretty good position offensively. I still would have liked to have seen more effort to improve our stable than Browns or Doaks though.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Can’t disagree, especially the part about Tua

When you dink and dunk it affects the entire offense, hopefully that’s behind us

  45. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Again the beat writers are putting to much into the front 7s dominating

We hear every year in camp the DL is ahead of the OL as expected, because of how much more the OL has to learn and how they have to mesh

Yet as soon as we get a joint practice or PS game they all seem to forget what they said the week before

      • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Comes through with what? I read the article. It doesn’t coincide with your original post, unless there’s an article where he says the opposite from the previous week.

        From the article:
“With Miami committing more assets to move up and secure Eichenberg a year after after drafting three offensive linemen in the first four rounds of 2020, should the team be concerned about a modest start to camp?

        Not at all.

The team’s depth at tackle may have taken hits from the injury release of DJ Fluker and the low-risk gamble on Isaiah Wilson flaming out. But generally speaking Miami’s got a pretty clearly defined group of seven offensive linemen; most of which are young. And even more important than who is in the room, we must remember that this process is still extremely early.

There are plenty of Dolphins fans showing signs of anxiety over the status of the line. But the Dolphins have yet to play even a single meaningful simulated snap in a game setting this summer. That opportunity comes on Saturday when the Dolphins and Bears square off in a preseason clash.

Between the youth of Miami’s offensive front that is still growing and evolving and the lack of true reps taken this summer during camp, we are no where near the time to panic about the offensive line unit and what the final product is going to look like or perform like.”

Seems pretty nuanced and on point to me.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Point was all of the chicken Littles out there worried about the OL based on 1 joint practice

Cav, I think we will be fine with our RB’s also. I like what we have gotten from Gaskin so far and he seems hell bent on getting even better. I also look forward to see what Salvon Ahmed brings in his second year. He has the speed and ability to make something out of nothing.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What makes Ahmed valuable is when Gaskin is dinged up we don’t miss a beat, when he goes in

Consistency is what I’m looking for

In years past, when Suh played in Miami we’d get lots of 3 and outs, but if our opponent got that 1st first down they usually drove the length of the field, because we were too top heavy

On D we seem to have some plug and play guys and some different packages, that allow consistency

On O can’t say that about our OL, but I can about the receivers and backs and to some extent maybe even at QB

This type of belicheatian team allows you to stay fresh and compete in any scenario

  47. there are only 3 preseason games, so We may get a significant look at the starters, before the benches are cleared tommorow

im hoping the starters get at least several drives before they get pulled, ya know, give us a taste of whats to come

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I expect it to be treated like any other year, with the starters getting 1 or 2 drives, depending on how they play, move it right down the field and the starters are out, struggle and stay in a while

Maybe we can survive, if we’re too careful, but what about the suicides from the lockdowns?

There’s also other mental health issues and not getting treatment for underlying issues

My sister was almost a victim, thankfully they caught her in time

Why are so many so fast at agreeing to these mandates, then have no problem when they let illegals in untested, many of which were positive?

    ______________

Steve, blaming mexicans for the covid is not an effective treatment,

i believe , we have to follow CDC guidelines, and not get sidetracked with flavor of the month scapegoats

scapegoating will NOT end the pandemic, there must be concrete solutions to this for eradificaton

hopefully the emphasis will change to solutions, not scapegoating

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s not blaming Mexicans for covid, it’s pointing out the hypocrisy.

On one hand they’re so concerned about covid, that they want to mandate and lockdown on the other they let illegals in untested, the 2 don’t go together.

It’s the same hypocrisy with blm, those lives matter, but only when killed by cops

Don’t want to get into a political debate, so I’ll leave it at that

Initially I thought let him fall where he may on the depth chart, but looking at thebtop 4 I agree

Once the season starts you’ll have your starters, then everyone else will just play based on matchups, so the depth chart doesn’t really mean much, Flores is all about productivity

Grant can be a great asset, if he can catch, I’d give him 1 last chance, hoping he’s solved the butterfingers.

Wilson can be dynamic, when on the field, don’t think his injuries will continue, at least hoping that will be the case.

Don’t want to just get rid of WRs for the sake of getting rid of them, wait until we’re forced too

Igbinoghene stays on a slow developing route and pins the receiver to the end line – ball sails out of bounds incomplete. He’s been strong today.

Get rid of Wilson and Grant when Parker and Fuller can’t reach the practice field. Makes no sense. Also would be getting rid of half our speed at WR which is what is making this offense work this preseason apparently.

Sounds like Wilson is a keeper if healthy. Grant is on the proverbial bubble.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Think Grant is having a training camp to save his career, he’s been good, especially deep.

Parker, Fuller, Waddle and Wilson, when healthy will be active each week, as would Grant and Hollins, if they make it for STs

Odd men out seem to be any of Williams, Foster or Bowden, just because they may be inactive

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We’ll see about Grant. Not like have been watching him at camp each day. And his play does have to justify a bigger salary.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I realize we haven’t heard his name mentioned much in camp this year, but he’s very good and a former 3rd round pick of the Raiders… who foolishly only tried him at RB.

Worst case scenario is we try to stash him on our PS, where he’d surely be poached.
