PRESEASON GAME 1 – Dolphins @ Bears

Wow, so pumped just to be typing the words preseason game 1. COVID-19 wrecked any opportunity to have any preseason at all last year, but this season, we not only get THREE preseason games but we also get an extra regular season game to make it 20 games in total! OK, so preseason isn’t all that, but to me, It’s game action against another team, and I personally believe it’s essential. Practice is practice, against your own guys, but when you face a different team, guys will bring more effort and the competition sparks a little extra than you get in practice. We have such a young team, I think they will benefit from having played these 3 meaningless games. You can laugh all you want at this but Tua not having training camp and preseason games did him no favors last year.

First and foremost we need to come out of the preseason healthy. There are injuries in practice, there are injuries in preseason games and there are injuries in regular season games, but you never want to lose a player before the real season begins. There will be some interesting competitions to watch, not only for starting spots but for roster spots too. There are always surprise cuts and sometimes there are surprises as to who makes the starting roster and this year will be no different. At least this year with training camp, minicamp and the preseason, players will have had a chance to show what they can do and the evaluation process should also be easier for the coaching staff.

I think the most interesting battle in my opinion is the O-line. This is where there is the least rotation and the starting 5 usually get the greater majority of snaps. As of now, the line is as so . . .

LT Jackson

LG Eichenberg

C Deiter

RG Hunt

RT Davis

I’m not buying this, and I believe by the time the season starts it will either be Eichenberg or Hunt at RT. If it’s Hunt then maybe Eichenberg stays at LG, but if Eichenberg gets the RT spot, I think Kindley settles back in at LG. We know the 3 starting DL in the 3-4 alignment are going to be Wilkins, Davis and Ogbah. I think we also know the 4 starting LB’s in that same 3-4 are AVG, McKinney, Baker and Phillips. I know Phillips has had a slow start and it’s possible he may not start the season the season there but I also know they will give him every opportunity to make it happen. With Howard getting his extension we know it will be Howard and Jones, but then the safety battle will be an interesting one. I think Eric Rowe is safe at SS, but does the wily veteran McCourty start the season at FS, or does 2nd year man Brandon Jones get the nod or does the rookie who looked great against the Bears in practice, Jevon Holland steal that spot?

On offense, I feel like health will determine who starts at the skill positions, WR, TE and RB. If healthy, Parker, Fuller and Wilson, all veterans will “start”. There will be tons of opportunities for the others though and that’s where it comes down to the roster crunch. We know Waddle makes 4, so does that leave 2 more spots or 3? Hollins is the gunner on special teams and that’s an important factor as to why he might make the team as he’s a good one. Grant is an electric returner, a playmaker but his suspect hands (on returns and as a WR) may leave him off the roster. What about Lynn Bowden Jr.? We gave up a 4th RD pick last season to acquire Bowden and he showed some promise, especially late in the season. It would be hard to let him go so if we keep 7 WR’s, all of the above should be in. That means veteran Allen Hurns, Robert Foster, Kirk Merritt, Isaiah Ford, Malcolm Perry all gone but a couple may end up on the PS.

Oh, by the way, Gesicki is back! Can’t wait to see him back in action and watch him get his well deserved new contract! So Hunter Long is NOT gone for the season, that’s also great news! That should leave Gesicki, Shaheen, and either Smythe, Carter or Myarick to go along with Long as the 4th TE. At RB, Gaskin is the lead back followed by Malcolm Brown, Ahmed, Scarlet, Laird and Doaks. Hey, what happened to world beater Doaks you were all telling me about? Sorry, had to get that out! I’m guessing we’ll carry 5, maybe 6 so Doaks has a chance to make the roster. We no longer officially have a FB, so we might carry 6 RB’s.

The game is on NFLN tomorrow afternoon at 1PM. I will record it as I will be working unfortunately, but I’ll get around to watching it at some point, I may stay away from this blog so it won’t spoil the viewing. Enjoy the game, it will be nice to see some of our exciting rookie prospects suit up for the first time, and see the growth of our 2nd year QB. Looking forward to it!

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Haven’t read up the page, Late watching ,, NOTES. From 1st 1/2
Tua can sling it , there was a great throw to a Hollins that didn’t make stat sheet due to a penalty, INT in endzone was a great play by DB ..

Couple good plays by NeedHAM , I think we do ..

    Iggywith a good breakup

    Run blocking MEH…

Arizona rookie throws a no hitter in his 1st start. Can you imagine reaching what is basically the pinnacle of a pitcher’s individual achievements in your first major league start?

  3. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

If Tua doesn’t have that one bad throw, most of us would basically have nothing but good things to say about his play and the results.

    1st drive- 3 and out.
    **1st down, a poor run.
**2nd down, nice throw in tight coverage where only his guy could get it. Tough catch not made.
**3rd down, a throw away on quick pressure in his face. Punt

Not a lot here. One tough throw with a tough catch not converted, and one throw away. Bears defensive pressure wins that possession. Our oline got beat 3 straight plays.

    2nd drive- scoring drive.
    **1st down, a poor run.
**2nd down, instant pressure that Tua avoided and got the pass off for a short gain.
**3rd down, a nice deep throw to Gesicki to get us inside the 10.
**1st down, from the 7, nice throw a dart to get us to the 1.
**Two failed runs from the one. FG

Not Tua’s fault we couldn’t punch it in on the ground from the 1. He got us to the 1 with two downs to go. Tua did his part. This drive showed he can hit the deep pass, and he did it on 3rd down, so he’s not just a checkdown charlie. He had the confidence to throw it for the big gain on 3rd down. He also showed he can move the ball inside the redzone with a nice read, quick decision and dart to get us to the 1.

3rd drive- This was actually looking like his best drive until the INT.
**1st down, nice throw for 16 yds called back due to holding.
**1st down, nice throw 11 yds to get half the penalty yardage back.
    **2nd down short run.
**3rd down, nice throw to convert with pressure from the backside (on a favorable spot, IMO).
**Two runs gained just two yards.
**3rd down, another nice throw in tight coverage to convert 3rd down and 8.
**1st down, Tua avoids pressure and checks down for 7.
**Three straight runs to gain 3 yds and a 1st.
**1st down, check down for 3.
**2nd down, nice run by Gaskin to get us inside the redzone.
**1st down, from the 14, INT.

Through three drives, Tua didn’t take a sack, had 4 completions over 10 yds, completed 72.7% of his passes, converted three 3rd downs through the air (all three were 7+ yds), led a scoring drive, and was one mental mistake away from 2 scoring drives out of 3 possessions. All this with an oline that performed shakily at best, most of his top WRs not playing, not much of a running game, and with what was probably vanilla playcalling from the OC.

The INT wasn’t because of mechanics or an inability to make a throw. It was simply a poor decision. He should have either thrown the ball a tick sooner, or gone somewhere else. His receiver also didn’t help him by going back towards the ball, if he had, it’s probably just an incompletion.

It was a small sample size, just a little over a quarter. I’m not saying all is decided and it’s now a foregone conclusion that Tua will be the next great Dolphins QB. It was one quarter of one preseason game, but there were a ton of positives to take from his performance. The decision making was clearly quicker and more decisive. His throws looked crisp and accurate. He looked more comfortable out there. He really only had one bad play.

I’m excited to see him (and the team) next week against Atlanta. I would assume this is the dress rehearsal, and we’ll see him for the entire 1st half. Hopefully he can build on this performance, eliminate the negative, finish a few drives, and put some points on the board. And above all, no injuries.

    Go Dolphins!!!!!

That was about my read on it as well. And I think the starting D is going to be killer.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The D looked really good even without blitz packages or our top CBs out there. Needham had a couple of really nice plays, Rowe had a great play.

I really think our team is going to go as far as injuries will let us. If we stay healthy, I think we’re a playoff team that could even win a game.

But we have a number of guys on both sides of the ball with injury histories. The Niners have built their team in a similar fashion, and it has really bitten them hard the last couple of years.

I’m just crossing my fingers and toes, hoping we don’t have similar issues, lol.

I also retract what I originally said about Palardy not having a good game (I blame it on being distracted). First I called him something like Pankey, lol. Second, he had some good deep punts, only had one touchback (not two), and he dropped two inside the 20.

Deiter cuts his man and there is a hole
But the LB shoot through that hole unblocked
Both the FB and RB try to go around OG instead of through the hole

Cav, Tua had a poor outing, with a cringe worthy 62.3 quarterback rating.

  12. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

this will be a huge test for Tua, look at our first 5 games!
    i’m expecting the worst!
if he can go 3-2 i will definitely gain confidence in him

    at Pats
    Bills
    at Raiders
    Colts
    at Bucs

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I think the Pets game will be a very good measuring stick right out of the gate. I’m guessing they will take away our run game (such as we have, lol), try to make us one dimensional, and make Tua beat them.

Belicheat is great when he has time to prepare, I think that will be offset by us having a new offense so he doesn’t have much to work with. I’m not sure what they’ll be able to do against us offensively, they have a new offense too, but it’s still Cam back there, so I like our chances of keeping it low scoring.

I’m excited by what I saw from the 1st stringers yesterday, and specifically Tua. We all want to see it in real games of course, but he’s carrying himself differently than last year, and he made plays. Whether he’s going to be a good QB in this league or not, we’ll start that get those answers soon enough.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Fitz failed this test last year. How great would it be if Tua passes the exact same test with flying colors a year later.

you have high hopes, i’m expecting the worse after watching his play last year.
this way i won’t be so disappointed and i’ll get to gloat around here.

however i’d rather have a dish of crow with barbecue sauce on it.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Bellichicks method of operation is he makes you beat him with your weakness and takes away your strength.

    ——————————–
I agree ORob. I still am nervous about it for this season. If we are to go far, and this defense will take us there, we can’t afford mental mistakes and turnovers.

I know it was just PS. We won the TOP in a landslide but we lost the turnover battle which caused us to lose the game.

  15. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Rob, those first 5 games will be a test as they all have really good defenses. Raiders may be the worse D of the 5 but still good.

Colts are looking for a starting QB. Going to watch them today to see how Ehlinger looks.

  18. it was a good first half, but the scrubs looked like shit in the second half

fortunately many of those guys wont make the team

  19. i hope to see more of Waddle in the second game,

i feel like he is the best player on the team, but he wont get called that, until he gets opportunities

  20. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  21. The Dolphins defense did not allow a first down, until the final minute of the first half.

  22. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The problem with the 2nd half was Reed Sinnett. Games he plays the entire 2nd half we’ll probably lose

  23. the starting defense played excellent, but the lack of overall depth is alarming

while the secondary did well in the absence of Howard and Jones in the first half, the scrubs looked like high school dropouts in the second half

the touchdown to jesse james was SO wide open, i have seen better coverage in high school ball

i would have benched the entire defense after that play, none of them deserved to be on the field

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You seem to be good at taking something obvious and turning it into something like this.

Fields has much better skills, than our 2nd half D as a whole, you know guys that won’t be on the 53 or at least most of them won’t be

  24. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Wyoming, I missed much of 3rd qtr. I hated that cause I wanted to watch those who will be backups.

Griffin and Duke Riley’s speed showed up for sure. Does not look good for Munson (LOL) who might get munsoned. Also for Render who I had High hopes for. Looks like they have Render listed as a LB instead of DE. He may end up on PS again though.

Benito Jones and Ledbetter looked good. Ledbetter was the one who got held real bad that last long run the Bears had before they started kneeling to end the game. He was in position but the RG practically tried to rip his shoulder pad over his helmet. Again, that was the end of the game and they let it go. The DB’s were hit and miss the last 20 min of the game.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Big difference for guys like Shak Griffen, when they play with a bunch of scrubs as he did in the 2nd half, compared to being inserted in a package with 1st teamers.

Hard to evaluate our scrubs against a runnung/mobile QB like Fields, because things breakdown too often due to his mobility

  25. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Fields got all the praise, but didn’t do shit, unless you call indecisive wobble passes a thing, until the end of the half.

He even had a fumble before getting it going in the second half against 3 and 4th teasers.

There’s something there with Fields for Bear’s fans to look forward to, but all his best work has been done against deep bench players, even in practice.

He’s not ready to start yet.

On the other hand our O moved the ball pretty good through the air and our D looked great.

I’d rather win the first half as we did, with actual top 53 playing, than win the game the way they did

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

In other words the games don’t count in the W/L column, but it does matter how your key players played against top tier players.

In past years when we had a shitty team, we’d often win these types of PS games as the Bears did

      • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I agree, I put more stock in the 1st half than the outcome. I thought we looked good on both sides of the ball in the first half except for some of the OL play.

    • we made it very easy for Fields in the second half, by not covering the receivers

Fields had a rough day in the first half, but cruised against the second half swinging gate defense

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Agreed with the take on the W/L. I mean it’d be nice to get the win, but it really doesn’t matter, and I’d much rather win the time with 1s vs 1s, which we did, handily.

  26. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Some are knocking on Fields. I said in the draft that he is not just a product of OSU like the QB’s before him. He is going to be really good. Possibly better than Lamar Jackson. He is already a better passer than Jackson coming in. Wait until this NFL game slows down for him and his confidence grows.

    • i say its too early to tell, he struggled for the first half, and only looked well against players that arent likely to make the team

I think most of the bloggers could have got a completion to jesse james, he was open by 15 yards

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Most of the time he was in there he was up against Holland, Fejedelem, Needham(1st half), Iggy, Griffin, Riley, Benito Jones, Ledbetter.

That’s 8 players who most likely make the team.

      • any of the secondary players that were in on that play, do not deserve to be on ANY NFL team

receivers have to be covered tighter than 15 yards, thats not even close to acceptable

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

LOL! Steve, this was not a response to you above. We were basically writing at the same time. Funny our different takes on him.

He was actually up against our 2’s and 3’s but I see what you are saying.

He is a rookie. Wait until the game slows down for him.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Think Fields has a chance to be great too, just not sure he’ll be able to read a D.

He’s fast, but not Lamar fast, so the plays Lamar makes with his feet he won’t make, but his arm is so much better.

He could be a poor man’s Josh Allen, if he can read a D

He ran hard, when there were no holes, and got the all important OROB 3-4 yards

At the time was praising him for his work, thinking I’m glad Gaskin isn’t in.

There will be times for both to be in there, just felt it was the right decision, against a tough front to start Brown and he delivered.

When Gaskin did come in, he looked better, but by that time we had thwarted the early energy from the Bears.

Ahmed may have looked the best of the 3, but think the transition from 1 rb to the next allowed the next to be better.

Meaning the previous rb set the tone.

Remember that we’re allegedly looking to trade for a swing-Tackle… makes me wonder if it’s about Jackson, being the right side of our O-Line looks alright and has depth.

Jackson didn’t look like he was moving at full speed yesterday and his efforts looked as though he was struggling/laboring to keep up to the sub-par 2nd and 3rd team competition. I wonder if he’s nursing an undisclosed injury (not likely), or if he just doesn’t have his head in the game. Whatever the case may be, I’m seeing why we might be shopping for a swing-Tackle after yesterday.

Hopefully, Jackson’s performance yesterday was just an aberration and all goes well for him next week and beyond. But if ya connect the dots, I’d keep a very close eye on Jackson moving forward. Something seems to be amiss.

  46. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

One observation: Grant is absolutely making this team. He fielded every return cleanly (at least in the first half, haven’t watched the 2nd half yet) and looked totally electric as usual. Can’t let that go

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I totally agree with ya, Mike E. The only thing that would prevent Grant from making our final-53 would be his $alary: trade.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

A month ago I didn’t have him making the team, but with the reports from training camp, and his contributions in the 1st game, I’m thinking he may stick.

If our offense is opened up this year like we’re expecting, he’s just another weapon that you get the ball in his hands a few times a game on offense along with his touches as a PR. He’s a big play threat each time he touches it.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I didn’t think he was going to make it either, I kept thinking about all those bobbles on returns last season and previous seasons. He looked very smooth, maybe he’s worked hard with his hands, really the only thing holding him back.

    —————
We currently only have $7.3M in cap space, according to Spotrac. Jakeem is set to count for $4.7M this year, and we’ve an over-abundance of WRs at the moment.

FWIW, I want to keep Jakeem (yes, I DO!)… but we’ve got several other guys returning kicks and punts, too. Don’t be surprised if it’s Jakeem who we trade. We’ve got plenty of speed to go around in our WR room, even without Jakeem.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’ll have more cap space after cuts. I just don’t think we’ll cut Grant.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And as I stated above, I WANT to keep Jakeem (yes, I DO!). Love that little mofo! LOL

Only other guy who could be in danger of being traded? Wilson, with his $5.2M salary this year. However, his dead cap is $2.3M, compared to Jakeem’s $1.8M.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

When I say “in danger” of being traded, I’m talking about a player who could have a significant yield in trading, while helping our cap status. And yes, we’re LOADED at the WR position.

Personally, I want to keep both Jakeem Grant and Albert Wilson. We’ll see what happens…

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Wilson is on a 1 year deal worth $3M according to spotrac. I don’t see us trading him. He’s having a really good camp.

Preston Williams could be the odd man out or could start the season on the 8 week IR. I do not think Bowden is a lock and I don’t think Malcolm Perry makes the team. Perry plays hard but does not produce much. His skills in college don’t seem to add up at the next level.

  58. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think 7 is most likely. Parker, Fuller, Waddle, Wilson, Grant, Hollins and one more.

We showed in the CHI PS game that TEs could be a big part of the passing game this season though. It will be interesting to see the final 53.

Wilson’s cap figure is almost 5.2m, you must’ve looked at McKinney.

This year like last the IR is only 3 weeks

Bowden looked good on Saturday, think he’s now got a great chance to stick.

Parker, Fuller, Waddle, Wilson, Williams, Hollins and Grant seem to be the top 6 or 7 depending on where Bowden is.

Week 1 no Fuller and maybe no Williams, so Parker, Waddle, Wilson, Hollins, Grant and likely Bowden are the 6 to make the 1st 53.

You can’t say you want Tua to open it up, then bitch, when he throws an int in PS.

He said it himself, he was late on the throw.

At least give him the preseason to air it out.

Don’t want him afraid to make a mistake, like RT was.

Part of the problem last year was he started out against the Rams managing the game, then against AZ he aired it out, but once Williams got hurt and he had a streak going with no ints, he fell into the don’t make a mistake mentality

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

It was a mistake of aggression. It’s not the worst thing in the world but it was still a mistake. It’s one that I don’t think you will see Tua make that often. That is why I am not that worried about that one 1 throw. I really liked what I saw from Tua on Saturday

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

With Tua in the game felt 3rd and long had a good chance to become a 1st down, felt the same way with Fitz the last 2 years, didn’t feel that way with RT, except, when he got real hot, which wasn’t often

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They showed Tua’s progression live on the int play, Shaheen was the 2nd or 3rd option, then he looked right, then threw late over the middle.

  83. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

If Tua doesn’t pan out as a QB, we can try him at safety!

  84. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Watching the INT from that angle, Shaheen beat the LB badly and saw the safety so he sat down in the opening. Ball was a little high and to his left toward the safety. No way he could have come back for it. If he threw it at first opportunity, it’s a TD. If he threw it when he did but hit Shaheen between the #’s where he could have come back on it a bit, it’s a possible TD or possible INT. Most probably knocked away incomplete. Instead, he tried to lead Shaheen a bit right when he was sitting down in the hole so ball ended up high and left.

Thought he was fixated on his receiver and didn’t see the cover guy coming in from the other side. Sounds weird cause he was so apparent on the replay , but stuff happens fast. Same time…. yeah he should have seen him. Guaranteed INT or incomplete with him swooping in.

I think I could run faster than Brissett
Tom Brady must have taught him how to run
He better stop holding the ball so damn long, I started noticing that with him last year he sometimes makes Tannehill look like a gunslinger

Difference is he actually has pocket presence and doesn’t scramble into the rush.

Reason RT survived all of those sacks early in his career was, because he was already starting to go down before contact on too many plays

The lack of speed of our backup QB seems to be the biggest problem thus far.
Reid Sinnett I thought looked pretty decent, better than the one Gase had on speed dial.

    Shaqeem for the team!!!

Looks to me like a lock as a ST player and a role in certain speed rush packages.

The year we went 1-15 under good’ol Cam we were 4-0 in the preseason so I like the way we are trending right now.
We slaughtered their ones, and it wouldn’t have been Brown slamming into the line it would have been Waddle and Gesicki and 21-0 or worse.

Cam sorry excuse for an HC

I basically throw the 2nd half out the window.

The first half, we completely stuffed their run game, and shut down their pass game (all without Ogbah, X, and Jones). We moved the ball effectively through the air on offense. We had a low penalty count, and Sanders and Palardy did their jobs efficiently. We were explosive on ST returns, and we didn’t give up any big returns.

Our oline and run game needs some work, and we need to be punching it in for TDs when we get in the redzone.

Still some work to do, but honestly, I really liked what I saw from our starting units

Maybe I’ll be able to watch the game without issue this weekend. It’d be nice, since you know I f^cking paid for it, lol.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Cheapest solution on that is to move to South Florida. And yeah am encouraging it. lol

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

LOL, I’d love to be close to the Dolphins, and no income tax is a big selling point…

We’re definitely moving when we retire in about 15 years, location TBD.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Of course you will move. You can sell your place and buy the same elsewhere for 1/3rd or at most 1/2 half the price and pocket the difference. And you can get out of the highest taxes in the nation outside NYC and a few other places. You can end up being one of those Californian expats people complain about in Boise that throw all their money around.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

        Lol, that’s the plan

Whether the withdrawal was the right idea or not…

    *withdraw

Not trying to be a d!ck, just pointing out a common error. I don’t mind when the likes of Phelon or Rockphin point something like this out to me when I err… it makes me wiser. As such, no offense intended, my man.
