PRESEASON GAME 1 – Dolphins @ Bears

Wow, so pumped just to be typing the words preseason game 1. COVID-19 wrecked any opportunity to have any preseason at all last year, but this season, we not only get THREE preseason games but we also get an extra regular season game to make it 20 games in total! OK, so preseason isn’t all that, but to me, It’s game action against another team, and I personally believe it’s essential. Practice is practice, against your own guys, but when you face a different team, guys will bring more effort and the competition sparks a little extra than you get in practice. We have such a young team, I think they will benefit from having played these 3 meaningless games. You can laugh all you want at this but Tua not having training camp and preseason games did him no favors last year.

First and foremost we need to come out of the preseason healthy. There are injuries in practice, there are injuries in preseason games and there are injuries in regular season games, but you never want to lose a player before the real season begins. There will be some interesting competitions to watch, not only for starting spots but for roster spots too. There are always surprise cuts and sometimes there are surprises as to who makes the starting roster and this year will be no different. At least this year with training camp, minicamp and the preseason, players will have had a chance to show what they can do and the evaluation process should also be easier for the coaching staff.

I think the most interesting battle in my opinion is the O-line. This is where there is the least rotation and the starting 5 usually get the greater majority of snaps. As of now, the line is as so . . .

LT Jackson

LG Eichenberg

C Deiter

RG Hunt

RT Davis

I’m not buying this, and I believe by the time the season starts it will either be Eichenberg or Hunt at RT. If it’s Hunt then maybe Eichenberg stays at LG, but if Eichenberg gets the RT spot, I think Kindley settles back in at LG. We know the 3 starting DL in the 3-4 alignment are going to be Wilkins, Davis and Ogbah. I think we also know the 4 starting LB’s in that same 3-4 are AVG, McKinney, Baker and Phillips. I know Phillips has had a slow start and it’s possible he may not start the season the season there but I also know they will give him every opportunity to make it happen. With Howard getting his extension we know it will be Howard and Jones, but then the safety battle will be an interesting one. I think Eric Rowe is safe at SS, but does the wily veteran McCourty start the season at FS, or does 2nd year man Brandon Jones get the nod or does the rookie who looked great against the Bears in practice, Jevon Holland steal that spot?

On offense, I feel like health will determine who starts at the skill positions, WR, TE and RB. If healthy, Parker, Fuller and Wilson, all veterans will “start”. There will be tons of opportunities for the others though and that’s where it comes down to the roster crunch. We know Waddle makes 4, so does that leave 2 more spots or 3? Hollins is the gunner on special teams and that’s an important factor as to why he might make the team as he’s a good one. Grant is an electric returner, a playmaker but his suspect hands (on returns and as a WR) may leave him off the roster. What about Lynn Bowden Jr.? We gave up a 4th RD pick last season to acquire Bowden and he showed some promise, especially late in the season. It would be hard to let him go so if we keep 7 WR’s, all of the above should be in. That means veteran Allen Hurns, Robert Foster, Kirk Merritt, Isaiah Ford, Malcolm Perry all gone but a couple may end up on the PS.

Oh, by the way, Gesicki is back! Can’t wait to see him back in action and watch him get his well deserved new contract! So Hunter Long is NOT gone for the season, that’s also great news! That should leave Gesicki, Shaheen, and either Smythe, Carter or Myarick to go along with Long as the 4th TE. At RB, Gaskin is the lead back followed by Malcolm Brown, Ahmed, Scarlet, Laird and Doaks. Hey, what happened to world beater Doaks you were all telling me about? Sorry, had to get that out! I’m guessing we’ll carry 5, maybe 6 so Doaks has a chance to make the roster. We no longer officially have a FB, so we might carry 6 RB’s.

The game is on NFLN tomorrow afternoon at 1PM. I will record it as I will be working unfortunately, but I’ll get around to watching it at some point, I may stay away from this blog so it won’t spoil the viewing. Enjoy the game, it will be nice to see some of our exciting rookie prospects suit up for the first time, and see the growth of our 2nd year QB. Looking forward to it!

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Makes me feel guilty that will be going with the new Sanders jersey at the Fest instead of Brandon Fields.

You are a TROOPER for our Special Teams guys. I appreciate that being they are very unsung, and it’s 1/3 of the game.

Man, I was locked and loaded to come last year with Julie’n Davenport’s former roommate at Bucknell (he works with me), then COVID happened. Now that Davenport is an Indianapolis Colt, my guy has no reason to go to Miami any longer.

I’ve only got one more week of vacation (already spent the other four weeks), and it’s over Christmas time. So, unfortunately, it’s going to be a no-go for me this year again.

Maybe next year. ONE of these years soon, I WILL be down!

MF13, I’m curious what you mean saying Stang’s use of ‘withdrawal’ was incorrect.

His statement was: “Whether the withdrawal was the right idea or not…”

There is an implied “of troops” there, and disengagement from an enemy is literally one of the definitions of withdrawal. So ‘the withdrawal of troops’ is correct grammatically.

And the “of troops” doesn’t have to be explicitly stated either. Here is an example from Merriam-Webster:

“The insurgents now control some two-thirds of the nation as the U.S. and NATO finalize their withdrawal after a decades-long war there.”

I also am not trying to be a d!ck, and I am open to the idea that I have missed something, but I can’t figure out what is incorrect about his statement.

  3. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Withdrawal applies to taking money out.

I used to take my time, and was sure to always proofread and double check my posts for errors and to make sure they were as grammatically correct as I could make them. I used to write a lot of work emails and sometimes proposal documents, so I always saw it as important to keep that habit up, especially in today’s world where so many people write in text talk.

As the years have passed, I don’t communicate by email nearly as much as I used to and I’ve let that skill kind of deteriorate. I’ve become pretty lazy with my comments on this blog (it’s basically the only social media I participate in), but I tell ya, I love just shooting posts off the cuff sometimes and not feeling that OCD need to proofread. TK – We should have been out of Afghanistan in 2011 as soon as we killed Bin Laden. As much as I dislike Biden and his administration, he was right in pulling our troops out. He fucked it up in many ways, and no one should be surprised at what is happening, but even had he stuck to Trump’s withdrawal plans it would have happened. At best it might have been delayed a few weeks, but the Taliban was always going to take the country back. It is really more of an indictment of our generals and the military industrial complex than of any particular President. They kept us there for profit with no clear strategy or goal. The Afghan military was always going to fold as soon as we left. The only way Afghanistan, or any other place, can have what we have is if they fight for it themselves. We can’t give it to them.

He wanted to kill all of the scumbags but couldn’t, that was not the mission. So he left knowing what was going on and couldn’t do anything about it. He was in his early 20’s and that is stamped in his mind now as a 30 something. Horrible.

Pp, another question, if you don’t mind and one I’ve been wondering about for long time, if you care to opine.

I never thought ANY war would EVER be winnable in Afghanistan.. History has proved it for a thousand years, I believe. The Afghani’s have spent those years building miles of tunnels, hundreds of miles of tunnels and more, through mountain paths and crevices over this time for refuge and survival. Unless you blow the top off the mountains (and even then you might not get to them) I could never see a way to defeat them. Any army.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The Soviets had a very difficult war with them. They eventually said fuck this.

The point Phish made says it all. “The only way Afghanistan, or any other place, can have what we have is if they fight for it themselves. We can’t give it to them.”

What I’ve learned during my life about war is obviously it’s very ugly, but occupation is really difficult anywhere. Guerrilla warfare is hard to win. It goes on forever and that’s what we’ve seen throughout history forever.

From Flores about Tua taking out the guy who intercepted him:

“Yeah, I think that’s what he’s got to do,” Flores told reporters on Sunday. “When you make a mistake, which he did, you just move on to the next play. In that instance, offensive players become defensive players.”

I loved Tua’s hit by the way!

  26. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So my friend told me he heard teams are going to use the 3rd and last PS game as the dress rehearsal game. In the past it was always the 3rd game, and the 4th the prominent starters don’t play. I actually like the prominent starters playing the 3rd and last one to tune up for opening day.

If you’re willing to play them in the 1st or 2nd, what’s the fear with the 3rd? It’s football, you can’t predict injuries.

  27. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Steve, you replied to one of my comments on how many WRs we keep and said no reason to keep 7 for week one. It’s not just about week one but the season. We know Fuller can’t play week one, but what if another WR can’t go and we’re down to 5?

We may very well only keep 6 WR because TE and RB will be very much involved in the passing game. The thing is I’m not sure RB for us is so deep that we keep 4 or more, and who’s a lock 4th? We could pickup a guy off the waiver wire to fill that role. Maybe we keep a fullback who can serve in a backup tailback role in a pinch. But outside of Gaskin, Ahmed and Brown, haven’t been hearing much about anyone else. Doaks has struggled and Scarlett has been quiet. Laird is a possible 4th and STs guy, but he’s limited. More of a receiver than a RB.

So 6/7 WR, 4 TE and 3/4 RB is the way I see it so far. STs plays a role as well.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Doaks isn’t ready yet, I’d try to stash him on the PS, so I’d keep 3 rbs

Unless WRs are playing STs the 6 and 7th guys won’t be active, so why would we need more than 5?

  28. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Cethan, if his leg injury isn’t serious can be our 4th RB, split with TE

No way are we keeping 7 WRs for game 1

9 OL, 2 QB, 4 TE, 6 WRs and 4 RBs with Cethan otherwise maybe 10 OL, then that 10th OL is cut to make room for Fuller

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Why 10 OL? We’ll probably on activate 8 week one. I don’t see us being 10 deep on the OL. We don’t even know who the top 5 are. Fuller still has to be on the 53 right?

Is it Cethan Carter or Carl Tucker as the FB/H-back?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I know Cethan Carter is also considered a STs guy. I don’t know enough about Carl Tucker other than him being from Alabama.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I only said 10 OL, because that extra spot has to go to someone and our OL is in Flux.

No Fuller doesn’t get put on the initial week 1 53

Krishna – Sorry, crashed early last night. In regards to your question about winning a war in Afghanistan, there is a reason they calling the graveyard of empires. Short answer is yes, you can win a war if you are then willing to rule with an iron fist. You can beat them easily in a stand up fight, but they rarely stand up. Ghenghis Khan subdued them by annihilating entire villages and towns and dumping the bodies into their wells, but even the Mongols only ruled there for about 13 years. What our politicians keep getting wrong (everywhere) is that it is the culture that defeats invaders not the fighting. The politicians expect the people to react like Americans or to discard thousands of years of culture and embrace our way.

BTW – The tunnels that you are referring to are called karez. They are actually irrigation tunnels, that get used for tactical reasons. They dig shafts every hundred yards or so connected by the tunnels for water to flow through. Mitigates evaporation.

Everyone’s favorite whooping boy has come aboard

That’s right you read the headline correctly. Colin Cowherd was heaping a ton of praise on Brian Flores, Chris Grier, and the Miami Dolphins organization. He couldn’t say enough positive things about the Dolphins organization and how they have built this team and how they run things now in Miami. He talked about how the Dolphins don’t commit penalties and their backup cornerbacks play at a high level and don’t commit penalties. Colin even said the Dolphins this year talent-wise are way better than they were last year. THIS IS NOT A JOKE! Colin actually said these things and was positive about the Miami Dolphins and didn’t take any shots at Tua.

Kind of says something, when your stubborn critics change their tune

  38. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Guess the OL wasn’t all bad

    Stock up
Miami’s centers: Michael Deiter and Matt Skura were two of Miami’s top performers along the offensive line. They weren’t dominant in the run game, but neither of them gave up a single sack, pressure or hurry. Cameron Tom saw very limited action, but in those few snaps he looked solid as well. A lot of people expected the center position to be Miami’s weakest, but that might not be the case.

Larnel Coleman: To me, this is one of the most pleasant surprises of the entire game. Larnel Coleman is a seventh round draft choice out of UMass Amherst-expectations were not high going into this season or contest. No one should overreact here, but Coleman had the best performance out of any Miami tackle- who saw that coming?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It was really that starting left side that stunk it up. I didn’t see the run block grades, but both centers and the right side starters had good pass block grades.

I think it was MF13 that posited that perhaps our looking for another tackle has more to do with Jackson’s play on the left side than any issue with the right. And Kindley’s play shows why they are trying to light a fire under his ass and moving him between the 1s, 2s, and 3s.

Dolphins coach Brian Flores said Tuesday that the loss of receiver Allen Hurns is “unfortunate” and he will be placed on injured reserve, which would end his season unless he reaches an injury settlement and is released.

Hurns will miss three months with a wrist injury that will require surgery, according to a source.

“Allen was having a good camp,” Flores said. “We’re going to end up placing him on IR. It’s unfortunate. Freak play.”

If he’s placed on IR before the regular season starts, he cannot play for the Dolphins this season unless he’s released with an injury settlement and re-signs with Miami at some point this year. He also could sign with another team if the Dolphins eventually release him from IR with an injury settlement.

Meanwhile, receivers DeVante Parker, Will Fuller and Albert Wilson remain out – even for Tuesday’s walk through – but Flores said “they’re getting closer.”

He said those three wouldn’t do a lot in joint practices against Atlanta even if they are available. Parker has missed much of camp with a hamstring injury. Fuller has missed nearly all of camp. Wilson has been out a week.

Preston Williams remains on PUP after November foot surgery.

Flores addressed other issues in his Tuesday press briefing:

    ▪ Rookie linebacker Jaelan Phillips – who has missed most of the past 10 practices – “will be out there today,” Flores said. “We’re trying to work guys back. We will take our time, not have any setbacks. Jaelan will be out there; we plan on working him against Atlanta. As a young guy, he needs reps. But at the same time, we have to be smart about our plan of working him back.”

Phillips, who has a lower body injury, did not play against Chicago.

    ▪ Flores, on his group of running backs: “We are going to use them situationally as best fits their skill set and what’s best for the team. Myles Gaskin can play first, second, third down, but depending on the situation, we may put another player in there…

“Malcolm Brown is a little bigger, what you may consider a power back. Myles is change of pace, good quickness. Salvon Ahmed has good speed, coming out of the backfield. They all played well in the preseason game.”

    ▪ On Tua Tagovailoa’s development in navigating the pocket: “That’s part of quarterbacking, setting up in the pocket, slide in the pocket to give yourself better throwing lanes. He has a good feel for that. He’s aware of that. There are good rushers in this league so you have to stand up and slide.”

    ▪ As far as play calling, Flores said it makes sense for quarterback coach Charlie Frye to convey the play to Tagovailoa, even though it appears co-offensive coordinator George Godsey is calling the plays.

Before any play, “somebody is watching front side, somebody watching back side,” Flores said. “So there’s a lot of dialogue. Somebody gives Charlie the call and Charlie says [something such as] ‘wrist band 33’” to Tagovailoa.

So Tagovailoa has only one voice in his ear: Frye’s.

Why is Flores not revealing who’s calling plays, even though it appears to be Godsey and not co-offensive coordinator Eric Studesville?

“We just try to keep things internal,” Flores said.

Asked by a reporter what they gain from that, Flores said: “What do you guys gain from that?”

    ▪ Flores said he’s hopeful linebacker Vince Biegel (in a boot) “can get back as soon as possible.” It’s the different leg than the one injured last season, when he sustained a torn Achilles.

That was meant to be sarcasm

It’s pretty political BBMike – Whether it’s factual or not

You might think it’s worst bc it’s not an opinion, but it still invites debate

I just spent a couple of days arguing that we weren’t hypocrites bc we pulled down a post. We asked people to exercise judgment. But that wasn’t acceptable.

Personally I don’t think the difference between perceived facts or opinion or insulting people makes a difference – But I can buy that argument since it’s fairly civil and certainly didn’t insult anyone specifically

But whether it’s civil or not is a judgment call
And if people can’t make judgment calls, shouldn’t there be a hard rule?

I don’t want to spend my days here arguing with people about why sometimes we look the other way and sometimes we don’t.

Obviously I have my own internal thoughts in when something goes to far. So do the other administrators. But when we apply it, some one calls it a double standard

Frankly I disagree about the emphasis on immigration as a problem, but when I argue that we are going to go down a rabbit hole and I don’t want to do that either.

Publisher Schuyler Callihan of SI Fan Nation sister site All Panthers offered this scouting report on Little:

“The Panthers drafted Greg Little back in 2019 thinking that he could develop into the starting left tackle for years to come. After dealing with a nagging ankle injury in 2019, the Panthers made a move to trade for Russell Okung to help solidify the left tackle spot for the 2020 season, which shrunk Little’s role with the new coaching staff. Unfortunately, that move didn’t work out either as Okung missed nine games. Even then, the staff turned to Trent Scott over Little. The truth is, injuries have really derailed his development. He also missed time to an ankle injury and dealt with concussions this past season. With Taylor Moton being locked up to a four-year deal and Cameron Erving and Brady Christensen being added this offseason, the Panthers just simply found better options.”

Couple this game with 2nd-place Bostons’ double header loss to the Yankees and the Rays have, I think, a 6 or 7 game lead with 40 games left to play. And I’m not saying a responsible adult wears the mask for other people. I’m saying a responsible adult respects the rules of the business they are entering. Fewer and fewer people care about being an adult though, they only care about their own thoughts and feelings, rules and respect be damned. We’ve become a country of children in so many ways.

Think the OL is a product of an offense in most situations, meaning, unless they really are terrible, like KCs last year in the playoffs or really that good, like the cheats last year, they go as far as the O takes them.

Just do an average job, while the QB is getting it done in the passing game, then scheme up the rest or take what they give you.

With a rookie QB, that’s checking it down and not hitting it deep enough you end up going against a D, that’s not afraid of you, so they pressure you and make your OL look bad.

Chicago tried this method and got beat deep and allowed 8 straight completions, sure they shut down the run against Brown, but it cost them, because we moved the ball
