Preseason Game 2 – Falcons @ Dolphins

Very important to keep in mind that the first game was really the first action against a different opponent other than each other and the coaches are just trying to see guys execute plays, all the while keeping it simple and vanilla so to speak, not giving any future opponents a real glimpse of what this offense and defense are going to do once the season starts. If you can do that, you probably won’t be so disappointed with what you see.

The first game showed some weakness with our O-line. Once again, not very concerned by that. It has nothing to with the lack of talent our O-line faces in practice against our own D-line (read that a few places), or that our O-line is fat, sloppy and overweight and slower than than last year (read that too). It’s preseason game one and we’re trying guys out at different spots and we all know synergy and continuity is something an O-line lives and dies by. Hard to have synergy with different people all over the place. That’s my take anyway. If the regular season begins and we’re in game 3 and this O-line looks slow, fat and lethargic I’ll let the worries commence.

The decisions at WR are going to be difficult, but Allen Hurns wrist injury just made one decision for them. He’s on IR and my guess is unless we get to get game 8 and we need him, he’ll probably never see action in a Dolphins uni. 2 of our WR’s are ST’s stalwarts and that cannot be overlooked. Jakeem Grant and Mack Hollins almost have to make the cuts because of that alone. Parker, Fuller and Wilson are the 3 vets that look to be locks, although I personally wouldn’t consider Wilson a lock. With the injuries that all 3 vets have endured, and how their spotty availability hurts the team, I wouldn’t consider him a lock. The question is, which young WR’s other than Waddle make the cut? Lynn Bowden Jr., who the Dolphins traded a 4th RD pick for last season would be one I think makes the roster. Preston Williams, the big 6’5 oft injured WR brings talent and size but also the injury bug too. Kirk Merritt has been having a nice 2021 so far but has to be a long shot. I think Ford faces astronomical odds of making the roster. Parker, Fuller, Waddle, Hollins, Grant and then pick one or two more. The rest of the preseason will decide that.

At RB, Salvon Ahmed has got some people giddy but I still think Myles Gaskin in the “lead back”. Not quite the same as Derrick Henry lead back in TEN but I consider him to the be the recipient of the most playing time. If Brown can give us the tough yards and grind out defenses, I think that could really limit Ahmed’s touches, although both Gaskin and Ahmed can catch out of the backfield equally as well, but I think Gaskin is the slightly better player.I don’t which young RB makes the roster out of Scarlett or Doaks or if the veteran Laird makes the cut. I guess the rest of the preseason will tell us the story there as well.

At TE, Gesicki is the clear choice with rookie Hunter Long hobbled by a leg injury and still sporting a thick knee brace. Smythe, Shaheen, Myarick, Tucker and Carter round out the depth there. I know some of you disagree but get Gesicki signed soon before he nets 70-80 catches for a 1000+ yards and 8 TD’s, because then the contract will be much higher than it will be now.

On defense, I really want to see our young OLB get more playing time. I’ve said it before he should be a big difference maker in our difference and if he’s not on the field, rookie Jaelan Phillips won’t be doing that. Hope to see him in action against Atlanta and hope to see good things. On the defensive side, Emmanuel Ogbah is the defense’s Gesicki. Sign him now before his contract is one we can’t afford. Shocked that LB Elandon Roberts is coming off the PUP (Good news!). Vince Biegel has been brought along slowly and despite being activated, I’d expect the same from Roberts.

I still hold to my prediction for the O-line as JACKSON – KINDLEY – DEITER – HUNT – EICHENBERG. Stay tuned. I look for Tua to have a nice game this week. The O-line will be better and the worries will subside. Want to see Phillips make a play or two that make us all think “Wow, this kid is gonna be something”. I want to see some tough, grinding runs from Brown, bullying would be tacklers for extra yards and then watch Gaskin and Ahmed come out looking like world class sprinters. I want to see more good things from Grant on returns and I want to see Gesicki and Waddle make some more big plays. I want positives, less negatives and of course no injuries!

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Wanna see a pass thrown to Waddle tomorrow

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They seemed to have not thrown his way for a reason

Last night Phil forced fed Davonta Smith, he had a nice route and catch after 3 drops

  2. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I had somehow missed this little factoid and it makes me feel much better regarding our injured players right now.

“The NFL last season began permitting teams to place an unlimited number of players on IR after preseason ends and to remove an unlimited number of players after missing only three games.

That rule will continue this season, and it could help the Dolphins manage their roster, with difficult decisions looming at several positions before teams must cut to 53 players on Aug. 31.”

  3. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Mike, your o-line will all be 24YO or younger and all 1st or 2nd year players. I think they will roll with some older guys at the beginning of the season. We will se in exacly 23 days!!!!

  4. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Read that Hurns is done for the year, by rule, if you’re placed on IR before week 1 you can’t play at all the current year

  5. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Dammit MikeE, I was just going to make a Taliban comment. Never mind.

    Great article again!

  6. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

On the other blog I mentioned using TEs, if WRs are out, I’d also include Gaskin and Ahmed in that conversation

  7. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I agree with your assessment and want to see the same things.

Right now, Gaskin is our best runner between the tackles which is reason I wanted to draft Javonte Williams. Hope Brown proves me wrong.

  8. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree Mike get Gesicki signed ASAP, see him having a moster year, think he’s finally turned the corner

  9. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Last year, I was not high on Hollins as a WR even with the big catch vs Raiders. I was looking for another big WR in my mock drafts like Terrace Marshall or Tomorrean Terry. Have to say I am pleasantly surprised with Hollins’ game this PS. He looks real comfortable in this O and wins at the LOS in press. With his size (not just height), it is like we have 2 Gesicki’s on the field.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

But keep in mind that only players on the 53-player roster after 4 p.m. on Sept. 1 are eligible to be designated for return from IR or the non-football injury list, which is designed to prevent “stashing” players on IR.

  10. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’d like to see Brown as our starting RB this year.

He can come in and tighten up the D, then once they’re flexed, preparing for contact, we can bring in Gaskin and Ahmed

  11. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Thank you, Mike E……a lotta wannas….lol.

    I want it all, too.

  12. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Good write Mike E. And I want to see Gesicki signed long term too, but franchising him next year at 11-some million is always an option. And that’s probably close to what he’d get per year in a contract. Takes some pressure off the team to get it done.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s always an option, but is $11M the right figure?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Franchise numbers for next year aren’t out yet, but the writer I took that from was speculating based on this year’s figure.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think it goes top 3 or top 5 salaries, right now Kittle is $15M, Kelce is $14.3M Jonnu Smith is $12.5M. If it’s 5 Henry is also $12.5M and Hooper is $10.5M. Top 5 comes out to just under $13M, if it’s top 3, over $13M

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Don’t know the exact rules (bonuses included etc) and they could have changed, but in the past has been the average of the Top 5. But assume Gesicki will be looking for a contract that gets him that. Especially when the newly signed tend to get higher numbers.

  13. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Stanger, as I’m not sure about preseason IR rules, but like I posted above IR is 3 weeks this year and unlimited on the amount of players you can add or take off the list after the first day of the regular season.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So guess the question is are the rules for Hurns different and does placing him on IR mean no way to get back on the roster. And I just don’t know.

  14. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“As I mentioned last week, I was deeply honored to be asked to host the syndicated show and was thrilled by the opportunity to expand my role. However, over the last several days it has become clear that moving forward as host would be too much of a distraction for our fans and not the right move for the show. As such, I will be stepping down as host effective immediately. As a result, we will be canceling production today.”

    — Mike Richards announcing he was stepping down as the Host of Jeopardy a week after he was named Alex Trebek’s replacement.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Wow, then just make Mayim Bialik the host. I thought she was really good

But nothing that has come out is all that horrible. No one is saying he tried to force any woman to bed in any way…. just said some off color stuff that really wasn’t that bad.

Why I figure either PC gone wild or there was more he knew would come out. Not sure which.

  15. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Looks, like they are still churning the bottom of the LB roster with the addition of Griffin and now Josh Harvey-Clemons. Josh Harvey-Clemons was listed as a safety for the WFT but was an OLB in college. He is now 30 pounds heavier at 6’4 245 from when he got drafted at 217 pounds. He has a ton of athletic ability. Imagine he might get some snaps in 4th qtr.

Anyone ever vacation in cape hatteras? Can you give me the details – did you like it?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Just know whenever we went on a cruise that left from NYC, we were always told the weather and sea would be rough around Cape Hatteras

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Never been to Hatteras but been to the Outer Banks a number of times. Different areas, but best comparison can make is to Fire Island. Lots of single owned houses on stilts that groups rent for a week or maybe a long weekend.

Not many eating places or hotels where I went. So you hang in the house, cook your own meals and hit the beach. But my impression is Hatteras (and Duck farther North) have more of that. Wouldn’t expect too much though, least compared to NYC.

But for a chilled vacation…. yeah not a bad place.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

They have great winds for windsurfing from what I hear

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Nice beaches and big waves at times. Great surf fishing!!! Used to go out there in the spring and fall to surf fish for giant bull redfish (red drum up there). It’s undoubtedly the best spot in the world to catch the giant redfish. I remember someone catching a world record day before I got there and was like over 94 pounds. Not sure if it still holds or not.

Also catch some big bluefish and doormat flounder while trying to catch the reds.

Have not been there since the mid 90’s so probably not much help in what to plan if you decide to go.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Actually never took ferry to Hatteras. I mainly went and camped on Cape Lookout or took the ferry to Ocracoke

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Ocracoke was one of the spots I hit. So both of us weren’t that far far from Hatteras but took a right to that ferry. Ferries run straight to Hatteras too though.

  18. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Stanger – if a player is put on IR before week one, they are not eligible to return this season unless they are cut with a settlement from IR. Only way Hurns gets back on the roster is if they cut him from IR with an injury settlement. Then he is eligible to sign with any team, including Miami.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Thanks. So sounds like Hurns is done, not that it already different. If they thought they might need him this season would have kept him on the roster till regular season and then put him on IR.

From what i heard Wilson is a starter over Waddle, how can you deem Grant a lock?
with Fuller, Wilson & Parker starters at this point, Waddle is a lock, Hollins may be a lock, Preston Williams, Bowden & Grant. we may go 6 wrs, that would mean 1 out of the last 3 would stay..
i would think it may be Bowden

    ________________________________________________

Jakeem Grant and Mack Hollins almost have to make the cuts because of that alone. 27. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – Grant is a lock because he’s the one returning punts and kicks. When you see someone else on the team doing it, and doing nearly as well as Grant, let me know. He’s also been good as a receiver this preseason although I tend to think his hands are still suspect

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

“May” do it? I know Waddle can do it, but until he’s doing it, Grant’s on the team. They’re not going to just throw him back there during the regular season if he hasn’t been doing it in practice or in preseason games.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Every report I’ve read says Waddle is returning punts and KOs in practice on a regular basis, and he returned a punt PS game 1

  28. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    Preston Williams, Bowden or Grant?
you can only have 1, which is it?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Preston Williams if healthy. He’s the boundary back-up, especially for Parker.
Problem for Bowden is he’s the back-up behind Waddle’s back up Wilson.
Problem for Grant is doesn’t catch the ball that well and gets paid a lot.

My guess is 2 of the 3 will make it past final cuts though.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Considering we have Mack Hollins who has Williams size, and since Williams has a hard time staying on the field, Williams is in trouble. I think both Bowden and Grant make the team. If I can only have one, I’d have to give Grant the edge right now. Don’t underestimate special teams!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Preston for sure, last year’s injury was a fluke, think the first year was returning a punt.

Gronk was always hurt early in his career.

I’d take the most talented everytime

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Think people forget what Williams looked like as a starting wideout. But if he ain’t healthy then he ain’t.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We have enough depth at receiver, that we can let him sit out a few weeks.

I want the best players on the field for the playoffs

What good does it do to have Grant, Bowden and Foster out there in a playoff game only to be ineffective

The only chance we have this year to make it to the SB is, if we have our best players playing in the playoffs

I’d risk the regular season to have a shot at the SB, if guys step up, Tua, Gesicki, Wilson and D continue doing what they’ve done in camp, we have a shot

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We can at least keep him on the roster till Game 1 and then put him on IR if needed with the new 3 week rule Rock was talking about.

  29. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Judon for the cheats has looked great coming off the edge, last night was against backups, but he’ll be their best FA signing

Mac Jones looked good, but not as impressive as PS 1, I’d start him over Cam

It’s kinda concerning that our primary WRs haven’t really played this offseason. I know what Tua said and I disagree. If X needs to work the rust off, so do they. The WR room needs to be renamed The Glass Cannon.

    Piggy,

Cape Hatteras is very nice but it’s a quiet area. Very relaxing but not a ton to do down there. I love ferries, kayaking, and lighthouses so it was very fun.

  32. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – Yeah, I saw Waddle return a punt (a good one too) during PS1. Still, my feeling is they don’t want burden Waddle with too much so they will allow him to concentrate on being a pro WR this season and let Grant handle the return chores. Of course I could be all wrong, just my thinking though.

Think a possible Topher collab maybe. Topher called him out in a song (not a diss) basically asking him where he stands. Then TM comes out with “Brainwashed”.

So, think it is an album release or could be a collab. I’m thinking album first.

      We will see! Thanks again!

Stanger, Re: Fuller. Not sure either. A few weeks ago I thought I heard it was a foot issue but can’t find anything on it. Last I heard anything was an article from 2 days ago that said, “Fuller, Albert Wilson, and DeVante Parker are all sidelined with undisclosed issues.”

    So, who knows.

I downloaded the new madden for Xbox
And after 4 games Tua is on his way to pass for almost 5000 yards and Fuller, Parker, Waddle and a Gesicki are on their way to 1000 yards each

So….I think we all know that if you can put up big numbers in Madden, the real life counterpart will do the same

    Right?

    Pig,

I’m a PlayStation dude, but I heard there may be a way to bridge Xbox and PS users in online play. Have you heard the same?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Oh, and when I say I’m a PlayStation dude, I’m talking about the console I’m used to playing Madden on… and I’ve not played Madden since 2013.

It would be cool to play online either with or against one another!

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yes, I have a PS4, but only bought it for Star Wars: Battlefront II.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

In some games They design the game for online across platforms

Call of duty does that for instance

I don’t know anything that’s like a bridge you can do

I’m not sure if the new madden is designed to bridge platforms – but with the newer consoles, it makes sense

The game provides the platform for online play so there isn’t a need for it to be one system or another. Just have to have a game that is cross platform and they have their own online servers you connect to

Shocked this could happen to the guy who used to dress up in costumes after Redskins games for interviews.

Former NFL running back Clinton Portis made $43 million during his career. He’s currently facing imprisonment over failure to pay child support. A court order has been issued for the arrest of Portis. He has failed to make a single payment on a monthly obligation of $1,937 for a child born in March 2015.

The court found that Portis owes $147,962.49, plus interest. Portis filed for bankruptcy protection in 2015. Child-support obligations generally cannot be discharged, however.

The problem is that most games are not cross-platform
    ———————
Thank you, D. Then the question becomes, is Madden ’22 a cross-platform game online?

The Jest have had two players carted off the field in their game against the Pack.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Wilson looked pretty good. The Jest really set him up to succeed with the playcalling though. Most of his passes were at or around the LOS, but he did make some good throws downfield as well.

And boy do the Bills look ready for the season to start. They were utterly dominate in all three phases against the Bears, and that was without Allen playing.

Hey – I don’t know if you guys remember

But wasn’t some one in the media writing about some drama between the Atalanta Police and Howard earlier this year

Like presenting it like Howard was going to be arrested once he stepped foot in glands And then typing it to the assumption that the Dolphins are trading him.

    Does that ring a bell?

Something about his prior agents house getting shot

    Does that ring a bell?

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Oh yeah, the cops wanted to talk to him. He was person of interest or something, and nothing came of it. That’s what I remember. Has something else happened?

    This is the story

His agent was the dude in lord of the rings

A few of us called out the story as creating drama in the off-season
The police report was actually from June 2020
But they talked about in Feb 2021
