Preseason Game 2 – Falcons @ Dolphins

Very important to keep in mind that the first game was really the first action against a different opponent other than each other and the coaches are just trying to see guys execute plays, all the while keeping it simple and vanilla so to speak, not giving any future opponents a real glimpse of what this offense and defense are going to do once the season starts. If you can do that, you probably won’t be so disappointed with what you see.

The first game showed some weakness with our O-line. Once again, not very concerned by that. It has nothing to with the lack of talent our O-line faces in practice against our own D-line (read that a few places), or that our O-line is fat, sloppy and overweight and slower than than last year (read that too). It’s preseason game one and we’re trying guys out at different spots and we all know synergy and continuity is something an O-line lives and dies by. Hard to have synergy with different people all over the place. That’s my take anyway. If the regular season begins and we’re in game 3 and this O-line looks slow, fat and lethargic I’ll let the worries commence.

The decisions at WR are going to be difficult, but Allen Hurns wrist injury just made one decision for them. He’s on IR and my guess is unless we get to get game 8 and we need him, he’ll probably never see action in a Dolphins uni. 2 of our WR’s are ST’s stalwarts and that cannot be overlooked. Jakeem Grant and Mack Hollins almost have to make the cuts because of that alone. Parker, Fuller and Wilson are the 3 vets that look to be locks, although I personally wouldn’t consider Wilson a lock. With the injuries that all 3 vets have endured, and how their spotty availability hurts the team, I wouldn’t consider him a lock. The question is, which young WR’s other than Waddle make the cut? Lynn Bowden Jr., who the Dolphins traded a 4th RD pick for last season would be one I think makes the roster. Preston Williams, the big 6’5 oft injured WR brings talent and size but also the injury bug too. Kirk Merritt has been having a nice 2021 so far but has to be a long shot. I think Ford faces astronomical odds of making the roster. Parker, Fuller, Waddle, Hollins, Grant and then pick one or two more. The rest of the preseason will decide that.

At RB, Salvon Ahmed has got some people giddy but I still think Myles Gaskin in the “lead back”. Not quite the same as Derrick Henry lead back in TEN but I consider him to the be the recipient of the most playing time. If Brown can give us the tough yards and grind out defenses, I think that could really limit Ahmed’s touches, although both Gaskin and Ahmed can catch out of the backfield equally as well, but I think Gaskin is the slightly better player.I don’t which young RB makes the roster out of Scarlett or Doaks or if the veteran Laird makes the cut. I guess the rest of the preseason will tell us the story there as well.

At TE, Gesicki is the clear choice with rookie Hunter Long hobbled by a leg injury and still sporting a thick knee brace. Smythe, Shaheen, Myarick, Tucker and Carter round out the depth there. I know some of you disagree but get Gesicki signed soon before he nets 70-80 catches for a 1000+ yards and 8 TD’s, because then the contract will be much higher than it will be now.

On defense, I really want to see our young OLB get more playing time. I’ve said it before he should be a big difference maker in our difference and if he’s not on the field, rookie Jaelan Phillips won’t be doing that. Hope to see him in action against Atlanta and hope to see good things. On the defensive side, Emmanuel Ogbah is the defense’s Gesicki. Sign him now before his contract is one we can’t afford. Shocked that LB Elandon Roberts is coming off the PUP (Good news!). Vince Biegel has been brought along slowly and despite being activated, I’d expect the same from Roberts.

I still hold to my prediction for the O-line as JACKSON – KINDLEY – DEITER – HUNT – EICHENBERG. Stay tuned. I look for Tua to have a nice game this week. The O-line will be better and the worries will subside. Want to see Phillips make a play or two that make us all think “Wow, this kid is gonna be something”. I want to see some tough, grinding runs from Brown, bullying would be tacklers for extra yards and then watch Gaskin and Ahmed come out looking like world class sprinters. I want to see more good things from Grant on returns and I want to see Gesicki and Waddle make some more big plays. I want positives, less negatives and of course no injuries!

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Eguavoen, first sack we blitz, pressure from everyone, he stunts to the middle and no one picks him up

Sack 2, the guard passes him off to the tackle, but the tackle doesn’t pick him up

Sack 3, he’s in coverage, QB scrambles right, he steps up, but QB doesn’t get rid of it for the easy Sack

Sack 4, the safety, another stunt, where he isn’t picked up, just runs right pass the OLman

If this isn’t typical KVN I don’t know what is, schemed into 3 sacks and the 4th on a play that broke down

Not trying to take anything away from him, just saying, if you line him up as an OLB passrusher he’s not going to beat you often straight up

With our scheme he can be effective

M – That’s why I think Grant makes the roster. You can’t underestimate ST’s. Plus, Grant can still be a part of the passing game, especially if we have more talent on the field with him, he can be a big playmaker.

That’s why I posted it, man. Me too… I think Jakeem is going to make our final roster.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

He’s a weapon. If he didn’t have questionable hands, this wouldn’t even be a conversation. Even with questionable hands, he’s shown enough this preseason. And after seeing the difference between him and Perry last game, I think he’s a lock.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

After last season I don’t want to see Grant used in the passing game ever again. He is a major liability at WR

  28. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ken – That’s when he was forced into being a major cog in the offense. That’s not what he is. Put him in a 4 WR set or give him a screen or jet sweep with other weapons on the field like Parker, Fuller, Waddle and Gesicki and he can break off a big play. You’re looking at him like I did, what he did last year with Hollins and Bowden Jr. in a spot where he was in over his head.

  29. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Ken — how is your weather today?

  30. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Stanger – Yes rain is more impactful in the NE than in FL. I’ve come to hate trees in VA. Bastards fall down at the drop of a hat.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Curious (not challenging you)… to what do you attribute trees in VA falling down at the drop of a hat?

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Shallow root systems and a high clay content in the soil.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Different kinds of trees and ones not used to heavy downpours like in FLA. That happens a lot and they adapt, or are at least born for it. Heavy rain comes and the soil gets saturated and then they start to fall. They are also real tall and slender trees. Guessing that comes with less sturdy root systems.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Place I lived in Fairfax was the worst. Old forest tall trees everywhere and when we got the slightest blow with heavy rain even if trees weren’t falling limbs were. And the power guys knew that…. we were last on their list to get back up. So if you watched the news and they said 2% of Fairfax was without power….. yeah that was us.

  31. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  32. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ken – Like I said to ORob, Waddle “may” be able to do what Grant does but we KNOW Grant can do it because he has. Doesn’t look like we’re giving Waddle much work on returns, not nearly as much as Grant. If Waddle was getting the reps that Grant has been getting I’d agree with you that Waddle will get his chance.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’ve heard that we want to work Waddle in slowly, after his ankle injury of last year at Alabama: let that injury heal fully before throwing him to the lions (ie: STs).

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Waddle split duty with Grant game 1 and looked dynamic. Waddle, Fuller and Bowden can all do what Grant can do on offense and better than him. The new rules really neutered the kickoff return game. Do you keep Grant because he can return punts especially when Waddle can do it just as well?

Shallow root systems and a high clay content in the soil.
    ——————–
THANK YOU for that, man. I’m getting ever closer to buying land in VA.

  36. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Mike, I see Grant the exact same way. For a 4th or 5th option, a guy with playmaking ability like Grant is not a bad option. And you gameplan to get him a extra few touches a game on top of the returns to see if he can make something happen and just to stress the defense.

Our offense is built around having playmakers, so I’d rather have the guy with high end playmaking ability than the reliable but plodding guy. Having playmakers that far down the depth chart is an advantage, especially with a WR room as questionable healthwise as ours.

I guess the real way to look at this is who would we keep if it isn’t Grant? Which player would he be replacing? We’ll see once cuts start happening. For instance, if it’s Grant or Perry, I’ll take Grant.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Why set up a special play for a guy who will drop the ball when guys like Waddle, Fuller and Bowden. You only get so many to spring someone in space. Why risk using one of those opportunities on a guy with bad hands?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Absolutely Grant over Perry. It may be a surprise but long term I could see Wilson being cut or traded. That way we keep Parker, Fuller, Waddle, Williams , Bowden and Grant. Like Ken can say we have guys that can do what Grant does, we have 3 guys (Waddle, Bowden and Grant) that can do what Wilson does and all of them can play ST’s too!

    Thank you, Stanger.

  40. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Two more things about last night’s game.

First, how about the cajones on Flores’ to put Waddle back in with no hesitation after the scare he gave us. If I was HC, I wouldn’t have let him stand up the rest of the night, let alone go back in the game.

Second, I don’t see how Munson can make the team, but I took great pleasure last night in yelling out “You just got Munsoned!!” I’d love to do that a few more times this season, lol.

  41. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

The way to play against this offense is to make Tua set up and require the play to take time & develop, take away the quick RPO. load the box and play tight coverage underneath.
if you make Tua wait; that’s where he gets in trouble.

I’m sure that’s what Bellichick will have waiting for us in NE

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Some of his best plays this preseason have been the ones where the oline gives him time and the play has time to develop, so I don’t agree with your analysis.

But I do agree that Belicheat will have something cooked up for us. The question is, will our team be prepared to counter whatever it is. Last year, we failed the test, passing the same test this year would be a nice sign of our team’s progress right out of the gate.

I’m looking forward to our guys meeting the challenge.

  42. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Ken,

I’ve never seen Grant drop a jet sweep or screen pass. And if Grant is better than those guys in executing jet sweeps or screens, that would be one reason you get him some plays too. The other reason, is the same answer for why you’d ever use a 4th option at WR, because sometimes you need that guy.

It’s not like Grant is replacing Waddle, Fuller, or Bowden. What you should be asking is would you rather have Grant as the 4th or 5th option or would you rather have Ford, or Perry, etc.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

      Don’t forget Wilson

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I haven’t. There is also Williams. It’s a tough problem to have. We’ve got 8 legit WRs. I think we keep 7 of them. Bowden could actually be that odd man out, and maybe he goes to the practice squad. Maybe that 1st week we keep Bowden since Fuller is suspended, then we move him to the PS week 2.

I’ve got us keeping: Parker, Williams, Waddle, Wilson, Grant, Fuller, Hollins.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Fuller is a boundary rec, Grant may stick due to his ability to play STs

  43. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I don’t know. I still have flashbacks of the high-five TD. Looking forward to more of that. Once Fuller’s suspension is over, how cool is a 4 WR set comprised of Fuller, Waddle, Wilson and Grant?

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

How do you let any of those guys go? Keep 1 less RB if we have to, or 1 less TE. You have to keep that top 7.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Bowden is a lock imo. His background as a QB gives him versatility to run novelty plays such as wildcat and throwbacks

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And that is the reason Perry won’t make the active roster. Has nothing to do with Grant one way or the other. Waddle, Wilson and Bowden will be the slot and maybe more guys.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Wilson fills that role too. He has the same experience as Bowden as a highschool QB, and he’s thrown a few passes in the NFL just like Bowden. He’s even got a TD pass.

  48. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Mack Hollins will make the team as he can play WR, TE and is a valuable ST player

  49. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I wouldn’t be shocked if this FO makes an unexpected move with one of our WRs in a trade or a surprise cut. I’m arguing that Grant will make it, but the fact is we have more talent than we can keep on the active roster, so at least one of these guys is going somewhere else, whether that’s PS, trade, or street then another team.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

A guy like Foster who looked like a good signing early on in FA has basically no chance to make it.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Hope we can stash some of these guys on the Practice Squad. And they kept the real liberal rules on who qualifies for that from last season. Question then becomes will another team be willing to put on the active roster. That’s unknown, but would nice to have some “break glass in case of emergency” wideouts.

  50. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Think Shaheen is a borderline cut, depends on Long’s health or how quick he comes up to speed

I’m fine every week throwing dink and dunk until it’s shut down, because they’re safe passes

    Brady did this for years

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I haven’t seen enough of Shaquem to be able to pick him. I’d have to go with Eguavoen just based on familiarity.

I agree with what you said above about his four sacks. He wasn’t beating people with pure talent, it was scheme. But he still got home on every opportunity he was given, and that says something too.

  54. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Happy Birthday Mike!

That was one of the sharpest PS games I’ve seen in a long time. The entire team looked well prepared. They got good work in.

  55. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Parker, Waddle, Fuller and Wilson will be active each week, if healthy

Grant and Hollins should also be active for STs

Williams could be inactive from time to time

Those 7 are a really strong group

Bowden makes plays, but doesn’t scare anyone

Foster I think isn’t on a team, that plays to his strengths

  56. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Should we just call Mike Heinz this year😉

  57. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Many teams in the league haven’t played their starters yet, for fear of injury

Since our WRs seem to be always hurt, maybe it’s a blessing in disguise, that they aren’t playing, but will be ready week 1

  58. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I agree I don’t see great game speed from Bowden even though he runs in the 4.3s.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

How do you know he’s a 4.3 guy?

      Can’t find a 40 time for him

If true we need to find a spot for him

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

When we traded for him they included his speed in the story, don’t remember who wrote it though.

  59. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Things we must take for Granted, because we really don’t talk about them here:

No way in hell Bowden is faster than Grant or Waddle and I’d bet Wilson and Fuller are faster too

  61. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

He says he’s a 4.4 to 4.5 guy who looks like he runs 4.3.

“An injury kept him from performing at the combine, and the coronavirus pandemic ultimately shut down his chance at holding a pro day, but Bowden said he consistently runs in the 4.4-, 4.5-second range of the 40-yard dash. “Turn the game film on and it looks like I’m running a 4.3,” he added.”

  62. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Bowden didn’t run at the combine lady year because of a hamstring injury and his pro day was canceled because of Covid. His college recruiting numbers below show he ran 4.38:
    https://www.ncsasports.org/football-recruiting/ohio/youngstown/liberty-high-school39/lynn-bowden

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

The reason why we traded for Bowden was because of his speed

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

They also have him listed at 6′ 1″, and he is actually 5′ 11″. We see cases of guys ‘standing on their tiptoes’, lol, but 2″ is a pretty big discrepancy, so not sure how accurate that 40 time is.

According to that ESPN article, from his own mouth he is a 4.4 to 4.5 guy. He’s still fast, but not the fastest on the team based on that.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

He’s probably more in Wilson’s range. Wilson ran a 4.43. And that is plenty fast.

But our top burners are Fuller 4.32, Waddle 4.37, Grant 4.34.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Least Fuller and Grant could run that at some point. Parker ran a 4.45 at the combine….. bet you he couldn’t do that next week in practice.

  63. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Equavoen was all over the field, 11 total tackles. It wasn’t just the sacks but that was awesome.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

he nearly picked off a pass on a play where #41 ran a blitz and he fell back into coverage. He was inches from picking it off.

Then there was the DPI penalty he got down field when Van Ginkel roughed the passer

  64. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Really like how we’re using our backs in the passing game.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Gaskin and Ahmed are all over it. Gonna be lots of options for Tua…. and he does like his up to speed YAC ones.

  65. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I was looking up some stuff on 40 times and came across this story about Deion Sanders, lol:

“One of the greatest early combine stories came courtesy of Florida State’s Deion Sanders in 1989. There was talk pre-combine that Sanders wouldn’t run the 40 at all; he later said he would take his medicals, run his 40 and go home.”

“Deion gets up to the line and runs his first 40 and everyone has him at 4.3. We figured he was done. He gets up and runs another one, and he runs even faster,” said Gettleman, then a scout for the Bills. “Some people had him at 4.25 [officially a 4.27]. And the funniest damn thing about it was he finishes the 40, continues to run, waves to everybody, goes right through the tunnel and we don’t see him again. We all got up and gave him a standing ovation because so many of those guys wouldn’t run.”

  66. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not a football scout, but my take on Grant is that he has mad moves, but only once he is up to speed A speed that has him going faster than the defenders. Perfect for kick returns, but don’t think he has the juke cut on a dime moves to ever play slot. Place to play him is outside and let him either go deep or cut in for the slant. WR sweep that lets him get up to speed an option too.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

He’s honing his craft, imo. This very last game (or first time I noticed) he seemed to draw everyone/coverage to his right and then slashed back to find the crease and open field…..just noticed it first time with him.

ORob discriminating against reality. You sure you watched the same game that the rest of us watched? Maybe you had your DVR on loop and were watching one play over and over.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

LOL….another rule. You can only play by ORob’s rules or you are condescending…..

ORob, you put up 6 months of condescending posts about how you were the guru on QB mechanics and Tua could not succeed because he didn’t take your QB seminar.

I think it’s you… and someone disagrees with your comments….

If you think it’s insulting, perhaps because it’s your ego that is bruised and what you put out there and people are calling you out on it. Just a thought…..lol.

  76. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Bowden was brought here for his athletic abilities/agility not necessarily his speed.
Fuller, Grant, Waddle, Merritt (4.33) and Wilson are faster.
    Foster may also be faster.
At best, he is 6th fastest but no more than 7th of the WR’s.

I think Bowden will be the 7th WR kept because of his athletic ability coupled with low 4.4 speed. I have always viewed him as a potentially much faster Landry who could not run a sub 4.5 to save his life but is a great receiver. I think Bowden has that potential.

  77. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

You see, this is the issue right here, Krishnas definition of “condescending” and he’s not the only one who has this mindset.

due to Tua’s failure last year my focus was on trying to point out why, or even discover why, i’m just guessing but it would seem logical to me as to what i said why he struggled.

So Krishna thinks it’s “condescending” to analyze and have doubts about Tua.
I’m talking about his play on the field, how could that be condescending?

i’m a troll because i say Tua sucks, but the real trolls are the ones who attack others based on a football opinion.

    ——————————
Yeah, Merritt got some wheels. I believe it was D who brought him up first when he had entered the draft. He was the top rookie FA I wanted them to go after and they did.

As far as who is left out, I think Merritt may be PS again. With Williams and current injuries histories of the rest of our top wr’s, I think they may try to play a game with the new modified IR/PUP rules. I don’t know if that is even possible.

    Early roster breakdown:
    Offense
    9 OL
    4 TE
    7 WR
    4 RB
    2 QB

    Defense
    7 DL
    7 LB
    10 DB

    Special Teams
    K 1
    P 1
    LS 1

  90. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If we keep a 4th RB who do you think that is, a tailback or fullback who can run some?

  91. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah nobody else has really stepped up. The team knows Laird and like you said STs, receiver and rusher in a pinch. If we’re down to Laird as our main back that means we lost 1, 2 and 3. No team has that kind of depth.

I’m excited to see Gaskin, Ahmed and Brown. It starts with the OL.

  92. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

we haven’t won a superbowl in almost 40 years, we haven’t won a playoff game in 20 years. we’ve only been to the playoffs twice in 20 years, bounced both times. Gase & Sparano were the only coaches to achieve that in the last 20 years.
so please excuse me for being skeptical.

    • thats better than detroit, lol

the above facts could mean the Dolphins are long overdue

i watched PS game 2, and there is alot of talent on this team, enough talent to go deep into the playoffs

just have to put it all together as a team and make it happen

  93. BTW Orob, Tua is excellent, he is the franchise QB the Dolphins need

in time, he will take us to the big game

  94. nice write up Mike, and yea, part time Wilson def is not a lock, i think Merritt is far better than part time

the only thing i dont like about Meritt, is he wears 83, a reminder that the team lacked the foresight to retire the Dolphins best Wide receiver number ever

    • D's avatar D says:

I have been a fan of Kirk Merrit since we picked him up as an UDFA, i thought he would crack the roster last year. I dont think he brings as much as Wilson, however, but if he is on the field with consistency, then he brings more. Wilson as dynamic a weapon as he is, is worth nothing to us on IR. He has been with us a few years now and we havent seen much of him because he cant stay healthy, im skeptical that changes.

  95. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

You can be skeptical. Like OD, Show Me, as I’m skeptical, too.

However, what I’ve seen in the last three years, two seasons, is something different than I’ve seen in the last 20-40 years.

Hopefully, it can be translated to the field in the third season.

  96. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Skepticisms: OL, WR unit, injuries. What’s up with Jackson? Clueless on that….

Encouraged by: D in general, DBs, LBs, DL, D depth..lol….like I said, in general, Tua’s progress, TEs and receiving RBs, and fucking screens that work and being part of O.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Think they’re just being cautious with the OL

Nagging injuries this time of year just mean these guys won’t get injured in a game they aren’t playing in

If the season started today I don’t think anyone would be out, except Hurns

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      The starting D looks great

What I like about the O is Tua seems to be able to pick up 3rd down and long with relative ease and 3rd downs in general

A curious event was Eguavoen being miked up against Atlanta

While warming up he was talking about making some plays, as if, because he was miked up he played different and had to make some plays

Reminds me of coaching my son’s basketball team. The last game of the year I told the best 3 players they were the coach and to tell others what to do. They didn’t coach others, but all 3 played great, as if, I changed their perspective
