Preseason Finale – Game 3 – Dolphins @ Bengals

This is it folks! Last game of the 2021 Preseason. Coach Flores has already put it out there most starters will sit so this is the opportunity for all those players on the roster bubble to make their case to be on the 53. It’s also a good chance to see what the depth looks like because during a season, injuries always rear their ugly head and you need solid depth to stay ahead during the season.

Jacoby Brissett will most likely see a fair amount of action and it’s important for him to show he knows the offense and can run the team in Tua’s absence. There’s always the question as to whether the Dolphins will carry 2 or 3 QB’s, my guess would be just 2. Reid Sinnett will end up on the PS and give the Dolphins another precious roster spot. Recent moves have made the WR depth much clearer. The Dolphins placed 2nd year WR Lynn Bowden Jr. on IR ending his season. The Dolphins also waived WR’s Robert Foster and Isaiah Ford. Veteran Allen Hurns was placed on IR earlier so the only bodies left are Will Fuller (Inactive Week 1), DeVante Parker, Albert Wilson, Jaylen Waddle,Preston Williams, Mack Hollins, Jakeem Grant, Kirk Merritt and Malcolm Perry. 9 WR’s , 6 for week 1. One has to go and I feel it will be Malcolm Perry. WIll the big bodied and oft injured Williams hold off equally as large and ace ST’s player Mack Hollins? I don’t think so. Merritt has had a strong preseason so he has a leg up, but there is still game 3 for Perry to change that. However, it looks very much like we’ll have Parker, Wilson, Waddle, Hollins, Grant and Merritt for the first game against the Patriots.

I expect us to carry 4 TE’s, Gesicki, Shaheen, Long and probably Smythe due to his blocking abilities. Myarick could steal his spot, and who knows, maybe it’s Shaheen that gets cut, but it sure seemed like they like Shaheen. Cethan carter also earn as a spot as an H-back/FB/TC, or maybe Long goes on IR because of his injury.

At RB, I think we’ll carry 4 into the regular season, the clear choices right now are the first 3, Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed and Malcolm Brown. After that it’s a real tossup as to whether 2021 7th RD pick rookie Gerrid Doaks makes it, or veteran Patrick Laird or a surprise like Jordan Scarlett. Game 3 will probably have a lot to say about which guy makes it!

On the O-line, still not decided (as far as we know), but I’m sticking with my prediction of Jackson-Kindley-Deiter-Hunt-Eichenberg. Still possible that either Eichenberg starts at LG over Kindley and Jesse Davis starts at RT but I believe it will be the former. Jermaine Eluemunor has also been released. You have to figure we carry at least if not 9 OL so the aforementioned 5 plus Davis, Skura, Little and either Coleman or Pankey.

On defense, despite not seeing a lot of Jaelan Phillips, I still think he’s going to be a major part of our defense. AVG looks ready to be right where he left off last season, and that’s a good thing. I really love our depth at LB with AVG, Baker, McKinney, Phillips, Roberts, Eguavoen, Riley, Biegel. Not sure if Griffin makes that final cut, especially since Roberts has been activated.

On the DL we have the usual Wilkins-Davis-Ogbah, followed by Sieler, Jenkins, Butler and Strowbridge. More than likely that last spot will be up for grabs between Jason Strowbridge and Jonathan Ledbetter, unless we carry 8 DL, which is possible. Benito Jones is still in the mix but Tyshun Render was moved to LB where he faces tough odds against the previously mentioned group.

The Dolphins strong secondary will be led by All-Pro Xavien Howard and Byron Jones at CB along with Nik Needham who refuses to give ground to 2020 1st RD pick Noah Igbinoghene. Good on Needham, who just keeps working hard! The safety group looks Rowe and impressive rookie Jevon Holland, followed by vet Jason McCourty, Clayton Fejedelem (ST’s ace), Brandon Jones (2020 3rd RD pick), Jamal Perry and Nate WIlliams. Probably 4 will make it here among the safeties with 6 CB’s. Perry and Williams are as good as gone leaving perhaps a battle between Fejedelem and Jones or we carry 5 safeties. CB’s should be Howard, Jones, Needham, Igbinoghene, Coleman, McCourty who can play both CB/S

Special teams will be standout PK Jason Sanders as well as newly acquired P Michael Palardy. Jakeem Grant and Jaylen Waddle as well as Noah Igbinoghene will handle the return duties. Long snapper Blake Ferguson returns.

There will always be some surprise cuts, some of the players I have making the roster won’t and some I have being cut won’t get cut. It’s fun to see how things shape up, let’s just hope that injuries don’t make these decisions for the team.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Sinnett has a good arm. The last throw on the pick was definitely a miscommunication, but I like his arm talent.

Oh no!!! But I bought a Trill Williams jersey!!!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I will say that was good coverage for a LB on a WR. He was close to breaking that up.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

        LOL, that is priceless, bro.

Yesterday, someone posted an article where William’s is talking about how he loves the number rules changes, because a QB will be out there, and see him thinking that is a LB in coverage, and they’ll throw not realizing he’s actually a CB, and Trill will make ’em pay.

When it happened I thought why is that LB running with a WR down the line. Then I busted up when I realized it was Williams.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        LOL

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The finish to that, and the explanation to my above comment is I noticed the 1st guy in the article’s comments said Williams had better make the team because he already bought his jersey. I’m like WTF, that was the jersey you bought? Trill Williams?

  70. if Miami was planning on putting Reid Sinnett on the practice squad, he will likely get poached, maybe the team will keep SInnett and let Brisset go

  71. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

LOOKS TO ME like we’ve got three, count ’em, THREE quarterbacks who can move the team and score points!! Yes, I know, the term “entertaining preseason game” usually is an oxymoron. But not today!! I REALLY BELIEVE this win will put the Dolphins team in a VERY POSITIVE FRAME OF MIND as they get ready for the ultra important first two regular season games against the Cheats and the Bills.
    ————-
Right now, the so-called “experts” in Las Vegas have the Cheats favored against Miami. And I’ve been told Buffalo currently is favored by a few points in the second game of the season down in Hard Head Stadium.

I EXPECT coach Flores and his staff to play the “We don’t get no respect” card. But one thing’s for sure: IF MIAMI WINS the first two games, the WILL GET RESPECT!! – – lots of it!!

  72. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Sinnett looked great, but so did Cleo Lemon in a last PS game, don’t read too much into it

  73. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

It was the scrub game and was a real good one to watch. We won. The “scrubs” looked like they had some talent. What more can you ask for out of the last preseason contest?

  74. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m more worried about Merritt getting poached than Sinnett. We should be able to keep Merritt week 1 though if we want to.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We knew some wideouts wouldn’t be able to stay with the team, but yeah even with the IR moves Merritt is one who probably can’t stick on the practice squad. Preston to IR might work though.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I am starting to wonder if Williams might not be the odd man out.

But yeah, if we want to, we can keep Merritt week 1 in Fuller’s spot, then move Williams to the temp IR week 2 when Fuller comes back. Then if necessary, Merritt could go to the PS mid season, or who knows. We got options.

Tuesday is when it gets interesting.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Think with the health histories and what happened with the wideouts in camp last thing we’ll be worried about is finding room for a wideout we want to play on the active roster.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

So? Now you let Orob blame it Tua…lmao.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not following you on that one Krishna. It was the play of the game.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Sorry, Orob is the champion of all Tua hate. Another QB bested him (Tua) again…no less a hail mary. Tua never took the seminar, he will never be elite, because Orob knows.

        I’m busting Orob’s balls! LMAO!

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

ORob says enough to bust on him about that seems you can actually wait for him to say it. 🙂

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

        Ok, stanger….lmao. Fair enough.

And part of being fair enough is matching the force.

Incessant random posting of QB intelligence and know-it-all throwing mechanics will be addressed when brought up….lmao!

Just usually late to the party…might mean I can’t have a say.

  76. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Watching the Pets game. Some good, some bad from Mac Jones. He’s taken a few sacks because of poor pocket awareness. He’s made some good throws. He’s holding the ball too long sometimes. I think our exotic looks defense would feast on him if he starts week 1, so I think it’ll be Newton.

  77. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

    RIP Ed Asner

  78. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

RAVENS Running Back Dobbins led the NFL last season with a 6.0 yards per carry average. Today he suffered a torn ACL, ending his season. THAT WILL REALLY HURT the Ravens’ playoff chances!

I’m so proud of and happy for Reid Sinnett.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

He had a great game and seems to have a bunch of field smarts. Could have a long career as a #2 in the league. Don’t think the arm strength is there to jump to the level above.

  81. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

CAVKONG; Agree with you that Newton starts on opening week vs. Miami. Miami pass rushers licking their chops at the prospect of drilling Fig Newton!

  82. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Why would the Ravens be playing Dobbins in this game?

  83. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

There’s a back-up QB controversy in NE. Hoyer is 9/10 for 73. Newton was 2/5 for 10 plus an INT.

  84. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I did not see our defense play that alignment that Eguavoen got 3 sacks from a single time today. Trying to stay at least a little bit under the radar?

  85. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

First off, good game, Reid Sinnett(!)… albeit against scrubs. Seriously, that was a good game!
Secondly, if the hail mary isn’t completed, his stats look much worse.
Thirdly (and most importantly), NOBODY is going to poach him from our PS… unless they are in absolute desperation mode from the jump.

Sinnett has a VERY long way to go before he can even be considered a legit backup NFL QB. Yes, there is promise there… but the guy played college ball at San Diego (no, NOT San Diego State). He doesn’t even have a CFBReference link, he went undrafted and ultimately cut in 2020, and one PS game against the Bengals’ worst today does not suddenly make him the hottest QB out there.

S-L-O-W your roll, guys! You DO realize that if a team poaches a player, that player MUST be added to their 53-man roster, right? Yeah, Reid Sinnett hasn’t ‘arrived’ like that after today’s matchup of the scrubs.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      All true, but …
I’m so proud of and happy for Reid Sinnett.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Me too, man! Me too! I’m not taking anything away from him, but some of the talk here that he’ll be poached is just a little out of proportion! 🙂

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Had the most passing yards in a preseason game in six years. Has to put him on some radars at least.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Consider the competition, the situation (PSG3), and who is in front of him. Not taking ANYTHING away from Reid Sinnett’s success today, but it must be tempered.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Impressed me. Already said he won’t be poached from the PS unless injuries on other teams. And thinking he could be our #2 at some point, even if not this year absent injury. Am sticking with that.

    IMPRESSED ME TOO! 🙂

  88. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, what Sinnett did today was add good game tape to his resume for the entire league. He dealt with pressure most of the day, got knocked around a bit, got up, escaped pressure a bunch of times and made some plays. He showed good command of the huddle and arm talent. He helped his NFL career. We’ll try to put him on the PS but I could see him being poached before that off the waiver wire from teams still trying to figure out their QB room.

Brissett has real game experience and is a competent vet QB so he’s going to be #2.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Disagree with Sinnett getting poached, but I 100% agree with the rest of what you just posted.

“Captain, let’s play a game” (Q to Captain Picard). Let’s say Sinnett would get poached, so we keep 3 QBs on our 53… what position do you take from?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’ll see. He had a full game of tape and looked competent. Some of these bubble QBs we see in the PS look fucking lost.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m keeping 2 QBs, and risking Sinnett getting poached. I think it unlikely as well, unless some team loses their backup in the next two weeks.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Or a starting QB I guess, because that would still open up a backup spot.

It doesn’t really matter who gets what… what really matters is an end result, not who is right, wrong, first, last, or otherwise.

Stanger, the Ravens will be needing a RB. I bet they kick the tires on 3 vets: Le’Veon, Adrian, and Gurley. TJ Yeldon would be my darkhorse pick for them.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

He only had his MRI and was confirmed at least earlier today, with the IR designation announced after that. That was my only point, but maybe the stuff you got at 5Am was from people who knew it was real bad even if the definitive tests hadn’t been done. And I couldn’t care less either….. especially cause will always be behind the curve on the breaking news.

  90. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Tim, I saw Dobbins get hurt too, and it was clearly serious. I mentioned a couple times last night that it was bad news for the Ravens.

  91. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And a bunch of us were trying to figure out how we could get Chase. Maybe we waddled into a better place.
    ———————————————–
Ja’Marr Chase, the No. 5 overall pick and consensus top wide receiver of the 2021 NFL draft, finished his first preseason on Sunday. It was not a good preseason.

Across three games, the Cincinnati Bengals rookie posted one reception and 16 receiving yards on five targets. With four drops.

His final drop came in the Bengals’ third preseason game against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, in which he inexplicably bobbled a screen pass from Joe Burrow. It was Chase’s only target for the game, and Burrow’s only pass attempt the entire preseason.

    • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

My question got lost on ya, bud. What position would ya cut from in order to keep 3 QBs on the 53?
    WR?
    RB?
    LB?
    O/D-Line?
    Secondary?

I just can’t see keeping 3 QBs on our 53. JMO, and I agree with Cav Kong.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I didn’t say that, I said we’ll try to sign him to the PS but I could see another team signing him off the waiver wire before that happens. I don’t think he makes our 53. See my last post asking a question.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  93. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Maybe I forgot how the waiver wire/practice squad works. Once guys are cut can a team sign them to their PS and then if another team poaches them they have to be on the 53 for 3 games, or no?

SO many rule changes that I can’t keep up. Maybe it’s for 3 games, but a poached player MUST be signed to a team’s 53.

      Kong slaps palm to forehead

You’re right, and good point, he could get picked up off the waiver wire with little risk to the team picking him up.

Anyone who doesn’t make the 53 is up for grabs and that includes signing to your PS. Don’t think they do the waiver wire after the cuts but if they do doesn’t matter cause only difference is only difference with off the waiver wire is have to put on the active roster. Just like when poaching from another team’s practice squad.

Oh yeah, do they go to the waiver on final day of cuts when it’s hundreds of players? I do know if you go to waivers, you have to clear waivers to be put on the PS.

I just realized I have very little idea how the waiver wire works, lol.

WOW! This $#!T just isn’t going away, is it?!!

      • its sad to think the Dolphins would risk bringing in Watson at this point

first of all, his legal troubles
second, this shows the Dolphins are somewhat clueless with the tank for tua, trade for watson

third, watson will cost too much draft capitol, meaning he has to do it without much added help

fourth, it just sucks that Tua has worked so hard and showed he is ready, but doesnt get his chance

i dont like this one bit

David, the Dolphins never tanked for Tua. He fell to us at #5. LOL

      • if this trade rumour is true, the Dolphins wasted their first round pick on Tua, that the team earned by playing terrible the previous year, tanking for Tua

anyway you slice it, its a bad deal for Tua, and the team IMO

Ugh… I really need this to end. It’s so annoying.

Hard to dismiss Drew Rosenhaus like Florio or some Yahoo sports guy you never heard of. But “working on” it in his world just means they are talking.
