Preseason Finale – Game 3 – Dolphins @ Bengals

This is it folks! Last game of the 2021 Preseason. Coach Flores has already put it out there most starters will sit so this is the opportunity for all those players on the roster bubble to make their case to be on the 53. It’s also a good chance to see what the depth looks like because during a season, injuries always rear their ugly head and you need solid depth to stay ahead during the season.

Jacoby Brissett will most likely see a fair amount of action and it’s important for him to show he knows the offense and can run the team in Tua’s absence. There’s always the question as to whether the Dolphins will carry 2 or 3 QB’s, my guess would be just 2. Reid Sinnett will end up on the PS and give the Dolphins another precious roster spot. Recent moves have made the WR depth much clearer. The Dolphins placed 2nd year WR Lynn Bowden Jr. on IR ending his season. The Dolphins also waived WR’s Robert Foster and Isaiah Ford. Veteran Allen Hurns was placed on IR earlier so the only bodies left are Will Fuller (Inactive Week 1), DeVante Parker, Albert Wilson, Jaylen Waddle,Preston Williams, Mack Hollins, Jakeem Grant, Kirk Merritt and Malcolm Perry. 9 WR’s , 6 for week 1. One has to go and I feel it will be Malcolm Perry. WIll the big bodied and oft injured Williams hold off equally as large and ace ST’s player Mack Hollins? I don’t think so. Merritt has had a strong preseason so he has a leg up, but there is still game 3 for Perry to change that. However, it looks very much like we’ll have Parker, Wilson, Waddle, Hollins, Grant and Merritt for the first game against the Patriots.

I expect us to carry 4 TE’s, Gesicki, Shaheen, Long and probably Smythe due to his blocking abilities. Myarick could steal his spot, and who knows, maybe it’s Shaheen that gets cut, but it sure seemed like they like Shaheen. Cethan carter also earn as a spot as an H-back/FB/TC, or maybe Long goes on IR because of his injury.

At RB, I think we’ll carry 4 into the regular season, the clear choices right now are the first 3, Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed and Malcolm Brown. After that it’s a real tossup as to whether 2021 7th RD pick rookie Gerrid Doaks makes it, or veteran Patrick Laird or a surprise like Jordan Scarlett. Game 3 will probably have a lot to say about which guy makes it!

On the O-line, still not decided (as far as we know), but I’m sticking with my prediction of Jackson-Kindley-Deiter-Hunt-Eichenberg. Still possible that either Eichenberg starts at LG over Kindley and Jesse Davis starts at RT but I believe it will be the former. Jermaine Eluemunor has also been released. You have to figure we carry at least if not 9 OL so the aforementioned 5 plus Davis, Skura, Little and either Coleman or Pankey.

On defense, despite not seeing a lot of Jaelan Phillips, I still think he’s going to be a major part of our defense. AVG looks ready to be right where he left off last season, and that’s a good thing. I really love our depth at LB with AVG, Baker, McKinney, Phillips, Roberts, Eguavoen, Riley, Biegel. Not sure if Griffin makes that final cut, especially since Roberts has been activated.

On the DL we have the usual Wilkins-Davis-Ogbah, followed by Sieler, Jenkins, Butler and Strowbridge. More than likely that last spot will be up for grabs between Jason Strowbridge and Jonathan Ledbetter, unless we carry 8 DL, which is possible. Benito Jones is still in the mix but Tyshun Render was moved to LB where he faces tough odds against the previously mentioned group.

The Dolphins strong secondary will be led by All-Pro Xavien Howard and Byron Jones at CB along with Nik Needham who refuses to give ground to 2020 1st RD pick Noah Igbinoghene. Good on Needham, who just keeps working hard! The safety group looks Rowe and impressive rookie Jevon Holland, followed by vet Jason McCourty, Clayton Fejedelem (ST’s ace), Brandon Jones (2020 3rd RD pick), Jamal Perry and Nate WIlliams. Probably 4 will make it here among the safeties with 6 CB’s. Perry and Williams are as good as gone leaving perhaps a battle between Fejedelem and Jones or we carry 5 safeties. CB’s should be Howard, Jones, Needham, Igbinoghene, Coleman, McCourty who can play both CB/S

Special teams will be standout PK Jason Sanders as well as newly acquired P Michael Palardy. Jakeem Grant and Jaylen Waddle as well as Noah Igbinoghene will handle the return duties. Long snapper Blake Ferguson returns.

There will always be some surprise cuts, some of the players I have making the roster won’t and some I have being cut won’t get cut. It’s fun to see how things shape up, let’s just hope that injuries don’t make these decisions for the team.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Only Fins whose cuts haven’t been reported before noon who are NOT spotted at practice are Locksley (released, per source); Harvey-Clemons (unlikely to be on 53); Kylan Johnson (COVID list)… Trill Williams out with minor medical issue but has NOT been cut

Williams remains on the roster past 4 p.m. today. Of course, that assures nothing with any bubble player. But Syracuse rookie has impressed team; NFL. com thought he was 4th-6th round pick quality.

Presuming underrated Hollins made it, and I have no reason at this point to think he didn’t, Fins have 7 WRs. Fuller doesn’t count in Week 1 because of final game of NFL suspension. Skilled veteran group.

Starting with Grant, the Dolphins’ new deal voided the last two years of his contract essentially making this a one-year deal and Grant will hit free agency in 2022. He could earn up to $3 million in 2021.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported the news earlier on social media. While the move is good for Miami, it could also be good for Grant who will have this year to prove his value both to Miami and other teams. Primarily a returner, Grant has struggled with consistency the last couple of years as a receiver. He was scheduled to make over $6 million this year.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Those two years were “cut” years anyhow. So getting rid of them is a plus for him. Half the salary this year if meet incentives….. not so much.

    Who is Tyler Marz?

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Marz was signed by the Dolphins on July 28, 2021. He appeared in six NFL games with one start in 2018 with Tennessee. Marz originally entered the NFL as an undrafted college free agent with Tennessee on May 9, 2016.

He was released by the Dolphins Aug 17th

  22. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Not really any surprises from the Phins today. Merritt will likely go to the PS if he isn’t claimed.

    Are we down to 53?

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

But we don’t have a confirmed list from the team yet.

Tim — RBs tend to be key special teams players too. At least have to have one on the PS who can line up. Maybe that ends up being Doaks. But we’re going one less on WR, who do ST as well.

Also we’ll surely put in a waiver claim for someone

  29. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I do believe we’ll be picking up a RB with a waiver claim. We’ll see.

  30. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m kinda surprised we’re only going with 3 RBs since two are smaller guys. I figured we’d keep at least 4.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We’ve seen this before. Bet you there are 3-5 roster moves before first snap against the Pats.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s about talent not just positions. I said not too long ago I’m sure we’re deeper than 3 at RB. We could add someone off the waiver wire but we know who our main 3 backs are. I don’t think the size of the backs matters. We’re going to run a lot of RPO, not so much smash mouth. Based on the PS, TE looks like they’ll be a big part of the passing game too.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

^not sure we’re deeper than 3 at RB.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I mention the size of the back because of injuries, not for playing smashmouth, and both those guys were injured last year. It’s a bruising position, and I’d be willing to bet both those guys miss time this year too.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Bigger backs get injured too. I’m just saying I’m not surprised we only kept 3. We might sign a few to the PS. Any team that loses their top 3 RBs are going to have issues at the position.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I almost added in my last post something to forestall you from saying “big backs get injured too”, so I didn’t have to explain the obvious. Yes, it’s a very physical position, RBs get injured, ergo a smaller guy is more likely to be injured, but either way, my point was about injuries and keeping 3 back, not playing smashmouth.

  31. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    I expect Doaks to PS

  32. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Not sure about Grant, but looks like, based on his current cap we save just over 1.5m

Removing the cuts and adding those currently below the Mendoza line we gain an additional 2,394,553

Still need to sign our PS, which counts against the cap and not sure yet what happens with cap for guys on injured reserve (don’t think they’ve been counted yet)

Looks like 4.6m for the guys on IR, about 1.6m for PS

Think we have about 2m in cap space, but that’s just a rough guess, haven’t figured one of these 53 man ones before

Since the season hasn’t started yet don’t think they count the full 53, PS and IR until sometime next week

  33. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

For all the released players today

  34. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kong, it all comes down to roles depth players play. A 4th RB who will be inactive on game day is not as valuable as other players who play STs. You can’t build a roster worrying about injuries. You deal with it when the time comes.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I hear ya. It’s a numbers game. I don’t think it’s unusual for teams to keep 4 RBs, so I was surprised considering the role in the passing game I expect our RBs to have, but I also know we’re logjammed at other at least 3 or 4 positions, so the space has to come from somewhere.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Tim — how can you not build a roster worrying about injuries? Isn’t that what depth is all about? And those guys you feel can step in are ones that you are developing for the future as well.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Because teams don’t build their rosters that way. You’re focused on a 4th RB, not a #2 or 3. Take out any team’s top 3 backs and tell me which one is still okay? Depth isn’t mostly about injuries but formations and rotations. Of course injuries are going to happen, but you don’t keep a lesser RB over a better player at another position. Know what I mean?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If I was building a team would build down the depth chart as best I could. If saw a lack of talent in my back-ups would try to improve. Injuries do happen. But guess you as GM would do it different. And maybe you’d be a better GM than me. Never played football so don’t have the insight on a team.

Funny you should say that (you’re NOT wrong) after we ‘officially have left Afghanistan’. The goal was achieved from day 1: get the ‘Patriot Act’ passed, which had been in the works for YEARS before September 11th, 2001.

And under the ‘Patriot Act’, phone providers (see Verizon) are obligated to turn over phone records of innocent AMERICANS to the federal government, in order to spy on them.

The phone providers — such as Verizon — were more than happy to cooperate, being they got secret kickbacks from the federal government.

The only practice he needs is on his pickup lines in his free time! No other teams looking for a supposed top 5 QB, just Miami because only they need a QB the mostest!”

I would expect we sign another RB/TE/HB at some point. But, 5 TEs kinda compensates for 3 RBs. We’ve all talked about this. This will most likely be a TE-centric passing offense…with TEs and RBs catching a bunch of short to mid passes….with a deep throw from time to time. NE of a few years ago basically. Ya know, one positive about having Co-offensive coordinators is that teams may need to game plan for 2 different offenses or sets of tendencies….depending on how we use those 2 guys.
    ***
I think Skura was brought in to take the C job if Deiter couldn’t. Deiter did..barely. Skura just isn’t the same after his injury, and he gives you almost no flexibility. If he wasn’t gonna be your starting C, there’s really no reason to keep him on the team. Plus, his snapping issues didn’t stop. The Mancz signing…who can play G/C….pretty much sealed Skura leaving.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

^ Not exactly the same but Skura vs. Deiter was similar to Jack Del Rio vs. Zach Thomas at MLB in 1996. If Del Rio wasn’t going to start, no place for him on the team.

What’s the difference between fmu site and WordPress?

I don’t think the problem is something like that, it may have something to do with your hardware

Do yoU go to the site from a phone or a different device? More than one device?

    • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

I phone… there was an update about a year ago that put me in a perpetual loop asking to log in to post … if I log in to WordPress , then bring up FMU , i’m able to post.

I am logged onto to WordPress and that’s how I post
You do need to log in through some forum (wp, Twitter or FB) that’s how it recognizes who you are an your avatar

    So that’s not unusual

Sometimes when you switch devices you need to log on again

I’ve never even tried logging in from Twitter or Facebook
I actually don’t have a Facebook account anymore

But it’s possible posting a link from Facebook leads to people not being able to see it

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Conspiracy theory out there links Bellicheat to Houston and Flores in a Newton to Houston, Watson to Miami, and Tua to a QB needy team like … Tampa Bay!!!!!!

  76. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

WELL THE TAMPA BAY RAYS LEAD BOSTON 8-2 in the bottom of the 7th. If they win, that will be their 12th win in their last 13 games!! And it will leave the Bosox 10 games back of the Rays with just 30 left to play. The Rays still have 15, count ’em, 15 pitchers on the injury list–and they’re running away with the eastern division title on a shoestring budget!!! –UNBELIEVABLE!!!
    —————
However, local fans STILL not turning out. Of the 10,000 fans or so in attendance, perhaps a third of them ARE ROOTING FOR BOSTON!!! HOWEVER, TV ratings are supposedly VERY HIGH–and TV ads are selling like hotcakes!! Still not sold on the idea that attendance will explode if the Rays and the city of Tampa can find a way to build a ballpark on the Tampa side of the bay. Local taxpayers firmly against public financing of most of the costs of a new facility. And Rays principal owner, Stuart Sternberg, has not said publicly if he’ll contribute a substantial portion of the financing. He’d rather play half the season in Montreal in a still non-existent outdoor facility and play the other half in an also non-existent outdoor facility somewhere in Tampa Bay. MLBPA has put the kibosh on his idiotic “half season in Canada and half season in Tampa” concepts. And Canadian government is having second thoughts about Florida residents spreading Corona virus in Quebec as unvaccinated players and staff frolic north of the border. And, of course, players wives NOT eager to see their kids split the school year between Quebec and Tampa Bay.

IN a couple of weeks, the two time defending Stanley Cup Champion Lightning will open their preseason camp. The Bolts will attempt to be the first NHL team to “3-PEAT” since the 1982 New York Islanders, who would go on to win FOUR CUPS IN A ROW in 1983!! –TRULY hard to believe the Bolts, the Bucs and the Rays are all CHAMPIONSHIP QUALITY FRANCHISES!!

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

oh of course, but why only keep 3 RBs on the 53.?That is very rare. So is keeping 5 TEs and 7 WRs at the same time. That whole ratio is very unbalanced.

        It’s like something is cooking.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s not really about that. We have two TEs hurt right now and how we play the game TE matters. I said this months ago. If we run multiple TE sets and rely on the TE position in our offense, losing two if you only keep 3 ends those options.

In the big scheme of things, we don’t want to see Doaks at all this year. We want Gaskin, Ahmed and Brown carrying the load at RB. It’s obvious.

  88. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The reason we kept 12 DBs is because they are key to how we play defense. We use 5, 6 and 7 DBs often. We play a lot of man. That doesn’t always mean press but that’s your man. We’re a stunt/blitz type of defense with 4 or 6 rushing in long down and distance and we don’t want the opponent to have time to throw. That’s why we are heavy on DBs. Zone coverage allows easy completions albeit usually short of the sticks – keep it in front of you, no big plays. Good man coverage ends up with sacks and turnovers. Flores is trying to build that type of defense.

This team is still being built. Look at the age of many of the major players.

  89. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

  91. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lots of games come down to the 4th quarter. What a team does in crunch time is key.

We play in NE against a rookie QB although a good one week 1. I think Mac Jones gets it, but our defense better make him feel like a rookie week 1.

I don’t think this game defines anything. But a win in NE to start off 1-0 would be awesome!!!!

  92. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Tua vs Mac Jones, game 1 hmmm???

OVER/UNDER Game 1 vs N.E. Tua throws for 99.5 yards?

  94. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I would guess the real Over & under for Tua would be 201.5 yards, as that’s his career avg

  95. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I don’t see us coming out of N.E. with a win, I think Bellechick will expose Tua and shut him down.

I would be utterly shocked if Tua played well and we came out with a win.
