Preseason Finale – Game 3 – Dolphins @ Bengals

This is it folks! Last game of the 2021 Preseason. Coach Flores has already put it out there most starters will sit so this is the opportunity for all those players on the roster bubble to make their case to be on the 53. It’s also a good chance to see what the depth looks like because during a season, injuries always rear their ugly head and you need solid depth to stay ahead during the season.

Jacoby Brissett will most likely see a fair amount of action and it’s important for him to show he knows the offense and can run the team in Tua’s absence. There’s always the question as to whether the Dolphins will carry 2 or 3 QB’s, my guess would be just 2. Reid Sinnett will end up on the PS and give the Dolphins another precious roster spot. Recent moves have made the WR depth much clearer. The Dolphins placed 2nd year WR Lynn Bowden Jr. on IR ending his season. The Dolphins also waived WR’s Robert Foster and Isaiah Ford. Veteran Allen Hurns was placed on IR earlier so the only bodies left are Will Fuller (Inactive Week 1), DeVante Parker, Albert Wilson, Jaylen Waddle,Preston Williams, Mack Hollins, Jakeem Grant, Kirk Merritt and Malcolm Perry. 9 WR’s , 6 for week 1. One has to go and I feel it will be Malcolm Perry. WIll the big bodied and oft injured Williams hold off equally as large and ace ST’s player Mack Hollins? I don’t think so. Merritt has had a strong preseason so he has a leg up, but there is still game 3 for Perry to change that. However, it looks very much like we’ll have Parker, Wilson, Waddle, Hollins, Grant and Merritt for the first game against the Patriots.

I expect us to carry 4 TE’s, Gesicki, Shaheen, Long and probably Smythe due to his blocking abilities. Myarick could steal his spot, and who knows, maybe it’s Shaheen that gets cut, but it sure seemed like they like Shaheen. Cethan carter also earn as a spot as an H-back/FB/TC, or maybe Long goes on IR because of his injury.

At RB, I think we’ll carry 4 into the regular season, the clear choices right now are the first 3, Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed and Malcolm Brown. After that it’s a real tossup as to whether 2021 7th RD pick rookie Gerrid Doaks makes it, or veteran Patrick Laird or a surprise like Jordan Scarlett. Game 3 will probably have a lot to say about which guy makes it!

On the O-line, still not decided (as far as we know), but I’m sticking with my prediction of Jackson-Kindley-Deiter-Hunt-Eichenberg. Still possible that either Eichenberg starts at LG over Kindley and Jesse Davis starts at RT but I believe it will be the former. Jermaine Eluemunor has also been released. You have to figure we carry at least if not 9 OL so the aforementioned 5 plus Davis, Skura, Little and either Coleman or Pankey.

On defense, despite not seeing a lot of Jaelan Phillips, I still think he’s going to be a major part of our defense. AVG looks ready to be right where he left off last season, and that’s a good thing. I really love our depth at LB with AVG, Baker, McKinney, Phillips, Roberts, Eguavoen, Riley, Biegel. Not sure if Griffin makes that final cut, especially since Roberts has been activated.

On the DL we have the usual Wilkins-Davis-Ogbah, followed by Sieler, Jenkins, Butler and Strowbridge. More than likely that last spot will be up for grabs between Jason Strowbridge and Jonathan Ledbetter, unless we carry 8 DL, which is possible. Benito Jones is still in the mix but Tyshun Render was moved to LB where he faces tough odds against the previously mentioned group.

The Dolphins strong secondary will be led by All-Pro Xavien Howard and Byron Jones at CB along with Nik Needham who refuses to give ground to 2020 1st RD pick Noah Igbinoghene. Good on Needham, who just keeps working hard! The safety group looks Rowe and impressive rookie Jevon Holland, followed by vet Jason McCourty, Clayton Fejedelem (ST’s ace), Brandon Jones (2020 3rd RD pick), Jamal Perry and Nate WIlliams. Probably 4 will make it here among the safeties with 6 CB’s. Perry and Williams are as good as gone leaving perhaps a battle between Fejedelem and Jones or we carry 5 safeties. CB’s should be Howard, Jones, Needham, Igbinoghene, Coleman, McCourty who can play both CB/S

Special teams will be standout PK Jason Sanders as well as newly acquired P Michael Palardy. Jakeem Grant and Jaylen Waddle as well as Noah Igbinoghene will handle the return duties. Long snapper Blake Ferguson returns.

There will always be some surprise cuts, some of the players I have making the roster won’t and some I have being cut won’t get cut. It’s fun to see how things shape up, let’s just hope that injuries don’t make these decisions for the team.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

  1. cam doenst have much intelligence, lol

    id pass on him

  2. FL is by far the best high school football in the nation , talent wise

FL has more players in the NFL, than any of the other 49 states

    State NFL Players
    Florida 212
    California 191
    Texas 179
    Georgia 120

  3. California has 55 million people, THEY should have the most nfl players based on sheer numbers

  4. I think Miamis defense will be too much for Mac Jones in his first game

    my prediction,
    Miami 31, Cheatriots 13

I think it will be a fairly close game just because everyone is still working out the kinks. Miami 24, NE-14.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Just like game 1 last year neither team has an identity on O

Mac Jones has been put in the best possible scenario, good D with belicheat tinkering the scheme, good running game, smart team

What more could a rookie QB ask for?

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I tend to agree. I think it’ll be in the 20’s or teens. Belichick will have his guys prepared. Even with a terrible Cam (passing) last year they beat us 21-11. Of course, Fitztragic showing up to throw 3 picks certainly didn’t help. The game was 14-11 midway through the fourth. We still could have won that game, but kept letting Cam run on us.

Anyone seen the movie Ford vs. Ferrari? Probably one of the best movies to come out in the last 20 years.

I can only remember a handful of week 1 games where we came out firing
Dan Marino vs the patriots comes to mind

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Shula had us firing on all cylinders against the Redskins one opener many years ago

Then was the Texans game where Rickey broke it open with a 50 yard 3rd quarter run, but was nullified, because of a phantom holding call, we lost

Peyton Mannings first game was a pretty good game for us. He did have some late success in garbage time

Seemed like every year under Shula he had us ready to go week 1, except maybe the game in San Diego in the 80s, that we got crushed. 3 friends from Miami flew out to LA and we drove down to that game, afterwards we were on the pier with our Fins shirts on and got teased by many

  9. i think the dolphins will come up with several turnovers, giving the offense a short field to work with

the Dolphins have 12 pass catchers on the roster, 7 WR and 5 TE

we know Fuller will miss game one, and WIlson is likely to get injured walking onto the field, but even so, Tua should have plenty of targets, and can also use Gaskins in the passing game as well

I would not discount Mac Jones. He is very smart and a cool cucumber. He will have to be rattled early and often the whole game. They will be pounding the ball early and often with RB Rhamondre Stevenson who is an agile bulldozer at 6’0 231 pounds. He was one of the big backs I wanted in the later rounds (5-7) but Pats took him in 4th. He is also a good receiving back. They have group of good RB’s in Stevenson, Damien Harris, Brandon Bolden along with 2 fast water bugs in James White and JJ Taylor.

They are going to try and control the game with the run to control our blitz packages.

Just because Mac Jones is a rookie don’t mean much with this new power run game they have.

The Pats rushed for 511 yards in 3 PS games. I know that is PS but that just tells me what they are building and working on.

Can’t believe y’all think this game is going to be a pushover.

    • Jones has talent, but the Dolphins defense is much tougher than the average SEC team Jones has faced
hes in for a treat with the Dolphins defense, they will rattle the shit out of him imo

i believe Jones will find success down the road, lol but game one is likely to be ugly for him

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

To me the key is not so much Mac Jones but stopping the Patriots run game. If the Patriots can run we will be in trouble. If we can take that away eventually Jones will make a rookie mistake. I would not look for lots of blitz packages but rather stack the line and rely on Howard and Jones to teach Mac Jones the difference between being open in college and being open in the pros

  12. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Not really sure how to take Grier’s work as a GM

Many from the 2020 FA class have already been let go

These guys on IR like Hurns are puzzling

    Then there’s the Watson mess

On the other hand, do you want guys on the team, that don’t want to be there like McKinney?

Do you want guys that don’t fit what you’re trying to accomplish?

Is it better to sign a lot of 1 yr contracts or cut ties with guys right away, that don’t fit?

Maybe we’ll find out the answer this year

Bingo Ken!!! Stopping any run game has been our problem let alone a power run game.

Not worried about NE. Think Miami can get a shut out to start the year.

Dolphins well positioned to unleash rookie Jaelan Phillips

  16. agreed the defense will need to shut the run down and force passing situations

but i believe the Dolphins defense is better than what many of the comments indicate, but everything is a prediction, the Dolphins could get blown out 59-0 , lol

but i certainly dont think that will happen, i think our defense will play lights out and force Jones into mistakes

  17. we cant forget about Howard, ya know, the guy that had 10 ints last year?

he will be looking for his first of this year against Jones

  18. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

  19. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

To me, our offense has to come out swinging and put points on the board. We can’t have this nonsense that we’ve seen in the past decade where the offense is constantly putting our D back on the field only to tire out in the 4th quarter.

  20. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Hit your teams site and play around with the rankings to how you like them. Can also select how many at each position group if you’d like. Just be sure to hit the autodraft button (or whatever it is called). If you don’t we’ll all be twittling our thumbs waiting for your pick time to run out. And yeah if you can make can turn live.

My thoughts on the 53, a thread:

QB: Kind of the ideal construction of the room. Promising upstart with a steady veteran who can execute the offense in a pinch

RB: Three, three-down players. Smart, vision, feel and passing game prowess present in all three.

WR: Prob my favorite group. Varied talents, tons of speed, capable of giving the defense eye candy to create space pre-snap

TE: I think the entire room compliments Gesicki really well, who’s among the game’s top receiving TEs. RZ threats and good blockers abound

OL: Getting closer to the final phase of a 3-year process of rebuilding the unit top down. Consider the lineup in 2019 compared to today. Reaching their potential is key, but you have to feel good about the developmental outlook. Plus, 2 rooks added to that mix in Liam and Jones

DB: Press, off, zone, man, capable of playing 0, inside/outside, several corner/safety cross-trained players. Deep in a passing league.

Spec: Game’s best kicker, a LS who hasn’t missed a snap, and a punter who was killing the ball in camp

Then, can we stop the NE rushing attack without having to completely alter our defensive gameplan, and can we protect Tua? If we can do the last two things marginally well, I think we leave NE with a W, but I don’t think we’re blowing them out.

Teams can also protect up to four players on their practice squad to prevent them from being poached – though that goes into effect on Tuesday each week, so a player a teams wants to protect could still get signed by another team on Monday.

Looks like the PS players make more than I last heard

Younger practice squad players are set to make $9,200 a week this year, while players with over two years of experience in the league will have a weekly salary of $14,000. That equates to $165,600 or $252,000 for the 18 week regular season. That salary is not guaranteed, meaning a practice squad player can be released at any time, and the salary does count against a team’s salary cap.

If you enter draft room and need to step away , there is a set to auto button at that time , but as above, so long without movement and it will default there as well. So HINT , even if Live drafting , queue a couple players so it don’t auto draft a kicker 😊

  63. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

The keys for N,E, to beat us is to get in our face, Our OL is the weakest link thru out the positions on the team, with a side arm sub 6′ Tua they will want to get in his face cramming the LOS loading the box. take away the ck downs. make him set up in the pocket and go thru reads. Time is Tua’s enemy. the longer the play takes to develop the worse it gets for Tua.

make him beat you deep as that’s where he struggles. couple that with our OL. it could get very ugly.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

But if they load the box aren’t they trying to stop the run? Rushing him I could get, just like with any other QB not named Peyton. Problem is Tua has a quick release.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I like this assessment because it’s a pretty generic way to beat every QB. Time is the enemy of all QBs, a bad OL destroyed even Mahomes, etc, Tua is really good at mid range passes and that’s where I think our speed may benefit. Belichick has to show a defense a long time NE coach never saw. I don’t think he has better tools than the ones Tua faces every day tbh. It will be tough but Tua has grown. Mac will have the harder day.

Watson has a way better release than Tua, he has a much stronger arm, more athletic, it isn’t even close, . Watson’s a top 5 QB in this league.

sure the legal issues play into it, but from a football stand point, Tua will never be the QB Watson is

    • but you said the pillow liar guy knew what he was talking about, lol

      we cant trust you anymore

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Tua’s skill set is a lot like Drew Brees or Steve Young. each of those guys was the best QB in the league in their prime. There’s a lot of ways to win in this league

Tua is 6-1. That’s not Big Ben of Josh Allen but there are a ton of shorter QBs that have been successful, in this league. Young, Brees, Tarkenton, Russel Wilson, Joe Theisman.

Tua’s accuracy is elite. There’s a lot of good QBs in this league that aren’t even close to his level of accuracy.

He’s also a smart QB so he understands the game and adjusts quickly

And he doesn’t seemed phased by pressure. In all my years of watching football, I’ve never seen some one so unfairly criticized as he was all offseason – what does he do in response, he barely notices. After a week of Watson speculation that drove fans crazy, what does Tua do at a press conference yesterday, he tells everyone he doesn’t have cable and wishes Mac Jones luck. He’s just a little different

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

2 days ago the trade was imminent and now it’s been downgraded to stories about how Miami actually wanted Watson

The people who were spreading the rumor moved the goal posts to keep people reading and clicking after the deadline passed

That should shed light on what they are spreading now. The stories that Miami was interested or pursued Watson have zero credibility

There are numerous ex apples this off-season. Of the team showing they are committed to Tua and on the other side really flimsy rumors about Watson

    ______________________________

i would guess you missed his performance last year, and for the interest of the blog, hold the lame excuses, he sucked last year, 3 of the 9 games he started he threw for less than 100 yards! got the hook twice.
    not sure how you arrive at;

    “so unfairly criticized”

    • he was 6-3 last season, not bad for a rookie coming off a serious injury

he doesnt need your assessment to match reality, he will be fine without You

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

His numbers were very similar to Joe Burrows and he won a lot more games

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Yeah that’s a typical rookie year of ups and downs

Peyton Manning threw 28 interceptions as a rookie. In his second season people were talking about taking a step forward and he did and the test is history

What happens now is unique to our time. You can spread rumors by hitting the retweet button. 24 hour radio stations have to compete with podcast and say controversial things: you have to be controversial to get ratings now so you get hacks like cowherd. And then they report people’s opinions on nfl live and sport center like it’s facts and not inflammatory editorials trying to generate attention

Tua is just a rookie going through rookie ups and downs. But in this media environment, everything is defcon 4

      That’s unfair criticism

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

forget all that, he has yet to show he can compete at the NFL level, remember his last game? the Buffalo drubbing?
for you to imply that he’s like a Brees or Young is unfair hype, he has yet to show he can even play in this league.

saying he’s a hall of famer is ridiculous!

  94. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Watson’s arm is not much stronger than Tua’s they are about the same. Athletically they are very similar. Watson is 2 inches taller

  95. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:
