2021 Season – Game 1 – Dolphins @ Patriots

The roster has been trimmed to the 53 man roster and our team is ready to begin the 2021 NFL season, it’s longest season ever, 17 games. The Dolphins head to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough to face off against their long time division rival New England Patriots. Bill Belichick always has a surprise and this season it was cutting then starting QB Cam Newton to make way for the newly drafted QB of the future, Mac Jones. By doing so, Belichick has now enabled a division of fine young QB’s, most drafted within the first 10 picks of their respective drafts, except Jones who fell to #15. Josh Allen, the elder at 25 (Pick #7), Tua Tagovailoa next at 23 (Pick #5), Mac Jones who just turns 23 today (Pick #15) and the baby of the group, Zach Wilson who is 22 (Pick #2). This should make the AFC East a competitive division for some time.

On to the Dolphins roster. We speculated for months as to how it would shake it and we all got it mostly right, but there are always surprises. The first bomb was LB Benardrick McKinney getting released. I’d say the second biggest surprise to me was WR Lynn Bowden going on IR and out for the season. It was a good move which allows us to stash him for another season, but it also makes you wonder if the kid has it or not. Next year will almost surely be his last chance. OLB Vince Biegel also went on the IR ending his season as well. WR Allen Hurns was also shelved on the IR with a wrist injury which made their decision to keep 6 WR’s relatively easy. I did think Kirk Merritt would make the 53 but he ended up on the PS. So, this our roster now . . .

So that’s the 53 man roster and this year the practice squad has been expanded by the NFLPA and the NFL accordingly to 16 players, including veteran players. Our PS consists of . . .

DE Jason Strowbridge, WR, Kirk Merritt, C Cameron Tom, RB Gerrid Doaks, RB Patrick Laird, QB Reid Sinnett, DT Durval Quieroz-Neto, OL Adam Pankey, LB Shaquem Griffin, DE Jabaal Sheard, CB Tino Ellis, WR Brandon Powell, LB Calvin Munson, LB Milo Eifler, OL Kion Smith, CB Javaris Davis.

So the Dolphins travel to New England, which formerly was a house of horrors, but we have been flipping that script in recent years. We did lose last season to Cam Newton and the RPO for which we had no answer 20-11. We upset the Patriots 27-24 in ’19 with a Fitzpatrick to Gesicki TD with :24 seconds remaining. In ’18 we were massacred 38-7 with HC Adam Gase, as if we expected any different. Gase in over his head at every stop in the NFL as head coach. I’m hoping we have something closer to the 2019 game, but I’d like to beat them by at least a TD, send them a message! The Patriots will have their new QB along with 2 new TE’s, Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry, as well as WR Nelson Agholor. I would expect both TE’s to get a lot of looks as BB tries to exploit mismatches. Besides, the TE is a young QB’s best friend. On our side on offense I expect us to have long drives moving the chains with a good combo of rushing and passing, and I expect our TE’s to be busy as well, along with RB Myles Gaskin getting lots of touches in the rushing and passing game. Both defenses will be similar in approach. Create pressure from where it’s not too obvious, disguising blitzes and pass rushers. I want to see a crisp game from our squad and most of all I want them to make Mac Jones look very bad. We don’t him gaining confidence beating a better team in game 1, and yes, I said we’re the better team. Instead, I want the new Tua to have a great game and give NE a taste of what’s to come for the next decade or so of Miami Dolphins dominance!

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Locked down our tickets with Tim our Dolphin’s rep and got 4 more cause the demand for this Fest is so high. So no pressure on extras.

Also talked with D&B’s and secured our normal place in the pool table area. Night before will start at 6 at D&B’s in Hollywood as always. Reserved till 10 but not like they ever kick us out.

Maybe not Tim, but I took a backseat to a veteran only to verify what I already knew. I should have “captained” it and didn’t. Huge mistake on my part.

Not sure how the team might take that either. For me, I’d be WTF? Humbleness is overrated.

You know who else is not a Captain? Howard – the best player on the team. Baker – the defense’s heart. Parker – the longest tenured WR. Gesicki – expected to be a breakout player. Don’t read into it. I love the Hollins’ pick – guy who everyone wanted to say was on the bubble. Guess he said fuck you doubters. Same for Davis – team loves him more than the fans and the media. Not like either of them are taking Tua’s place in the huddle. It’s just more media-created histrionics and hand wringing to justify their being wrong on every story about Tua all year.

  22. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Capt. Stubbs – I would not be surprised to see Parker traded before the deadline. Hollins and Williams more than replace him and Hollins isn’t always injured.

  23. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I think there are leaders that are recognized, a captain is a leader, I think any QB on any team should be a captain
    imo.

Your job is to lead, captain the ship, make the reads before the snap, know where you’re going, and execute.

Maybe I don’t understand what a captain is.

  24. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s very cool that Michael Deiter won the starting center position in his 3rd season after being drafted in the 3rd round by the Flores regime, their first OL drafted. That’s how it’s supposed to be. Young players developing. Now it’s time for Deiter to go out and prove he’s the long term answer.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

      No doubt, agreed.

Still can’t figure out why we can’t figure out an OL…..hmmmmm

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It’s exactly what we should do – draft guys and bring them along

When you lack talent, guys start right away.

Even last year so many of our OL were expected to play right away. But this year players like Eichenberg, who played well IMO, isn’t the top RT on the depth chart

Look at our DBs: Holland, Jones and Iggy are all backups. I think some people see that as busts (especially iggy) but I think part of that mindset of not being used to a deep team

I’m not sure if anyone noticed but none of our draft picks are expected to start. That’s not a bad thing. We have young hungry players behind vets and an actual system in place where players can be be brought along slowly and develop without being pressured to start

No one even blinked that neither Waddle nor Phillips will start

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yep! The rooks will get snaps and earn their place by being productive. That’s how it works and Flores does not care about how you got here. He’s aware of it, but the best players will play. Whatever it takes to win the game.

  25. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

The only time being named captain means anything (to us fans) is the day they announce you as captain and even then all the talk is about who isn’t a captain.

  26. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Let’s look at who the captains are.
Jesse Davis – the versatile vet on the OL that all the young OL guys look up to.
Mack Hollins – a STs ace who had a very good offseason at WR.
Elandon Roberts – a baller who sets the tone with big hits.
Jason McCourty – the elder who’s won championships.
Clayton Fejedelem – a STs ace who’s role goes unnoticed by the public.

Tua is the leader of the offense when they’re on the field. He’s not a captain, he’s the general.

It’s just “Captain” doesn’t really mean anything officially, but you have to look at the way Tua is, he wants to earn it and not be handed to him

Kind of seems like the way ORob is evaluating him, he wants Tua to earn his praise, before praising him, and until that time go by what he did last year, fair or not

We’ll know on Sunday, if the hype matches the 2021 version of Tua

We started 3-0 one year with RT, then played at Cheats, belicheat played his cover 0 and Tannehill wilted like an ice cream cone in Vegas

Tua plays good Sunday and 2020 will be the past

  51. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If we can believe the bs and the hype, then you need a good QB to succeed in the NFL

Mac Jones may be good in the future, but he hasn’t seen this D yet

Herbert wilted twice last year against us and the cheats, and Jones isn’t Herbert

Gotta stop thebrun game at all cost

3rd down and 6, 8 guys on the D LOS, who is coming? Jones will throw the ball quick and hope his receiver can run for a 1st, not exactly a situation you’ll succeed often with

  52. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    FYI

There are 4 teams that don’t even appoint captains for the season, they appoint captains weekly . That’s how little it means.

But like everything else regarding Tua, his detractors want to make a mountain out of a molehill

You want to hear something really funny – DeShaun Watson was named team captain for Houston. Nothing says team leadership like demanding a trade from your team am
    I right?

Jimmy Garapolo also named team captain just a few months after 49ers traded up and drafted his replacement in Trey Lance…

Trevor Lawrence and Zach wilson are both team captains having not taken a snap in the nfl

Almost every team named their QB team captain out of routine. It really doesn’t mean much about the player

But there is one other team that did not name their starting QB team captain. I will give you guys a hint on which team it is. Our coach used to
Coach for them and often applies the same philosophies and we play that team this weekend….

Guess who it is – you guessed it. The Patriots have not named a qb team captain…

And I bet no one even questions it, but for Tua….blow harder Tua bashers blow harder

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

There’s a very fine line on Tua bashing, and it keeps getting finer and losing members, but if he doesn’t get it done on Sunday, the band will be playing loudly

I expect something in between how he played last year and what some of us think will happen

Belicheat doesn’t have the backend for this game to succeed with his cover 0, as Gilmore is out and they won’t be able to hang with our speed

Even with Gilmore, he would’ve been covering Parker, leaving others to roam free

Wilson and Waddle on quick slants to the house, if belicheat covers 0

But in college, that was in college, if I’m being honest. At the same time, it is kind of – being on the left side was a lot easier. Being at left guard, just kind of the movement pattern as you know. Regardless, wherever they want me and wherever the offensive line coach – ‘Coach Lem’ and ‘Coach Flo’ put me, I’ll play. Whatever it takes to help this team win. I’m just excited to practice, to be out there.”

Here’s my quick breakdown of Sunday’s game against the Patsies*

    1) If our Defense has few/no mental breakdowns, we can beat their Offense. Be ready for the quick-hitters out of the backfield, their quick slants, and their running game. Don’t over-commit, one way or the other, unless the situation warrants as much. Belicheat* will lull us into a false sense of security: be prepared. By the same token, don’t be afraid to keep ‘some’ heat on Mac Jones, just do it wisely (talking about the blitz). If the blitzing works early, then let the dogs out as the game goes on, but be ready for halftime adjustments.

    2) If our Offense is all it’s cracked up to be, our speed will hurt their Defense. It’s going to be tough running, but don’t give up on the running game: we’ve got to keep them honest. Limit turnovers, keep the ball moving between the 20s, and Jason Sanders could put up enough points to win the game… provided our Defense does its job.

    3) DON’T GET TOO CUTE. This is a divisional game and the win means a LOT, especially being our first four games are against great competition. Strike/score first, and manage the clock. There’s no need to advertise to the rest of the league what’s up our sleeves unless we need to pull this game out late.

    Offense
    — I think Tua is FAR ahead of Mac Jones: we should win the QB battle
    — I think our WRs are FAR ahead of their WRs, and it’s essentially a wash with TEs, albeit we have the elite playmaker in Gesicki
    — I think their O-Line is FAR ahead of our O-Line
    — I think our RBs are about equal, but their O-Line is stout in running

    Defense
    — I think our D-Lines are close to equal
    — I think our LB corps is a hair better than theirs
    — I think our DBs are SUPERIOR to theirs, but do NOT, DO NOT sleep on theirs

    Special Teams
    — I think our STs are better than theirs. We’ve got nice gunners, nice blockers, and have an elite returner in Jakeem.

Do NOT sleep on: James White

    Prediction: Phins 27 – Patsies* 23

    —————-
NO… it would NOT make a difference. And the way I hear it, it’s more like 52% of US adults are already vaxxed.

I see I got lured into a political convo again!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Alright, I’ll roll with ya on whatever percentage. Why, I ask, is it that we’re told that the delta variant is destroying America? Logically speaking, if 50% of our population has been vaxxed, why is it spreading faster and killing more people than the initial COVID?

        Reason: FAKE NEWS

        Reaction: Why get vaxxed?

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

As a matter of math and science, NONE of this makes sense.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Delta is spreading faster cause it is a nastier bug than we started with. And it’s crushing cause people aren’t vaccinate. 95% of the people who get hospitalized and 98% of those who dies these days are unvaccinated.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Sometimes you’ll see arguments about the numbers bc some people are citing one dose vs fully vaccinated

It’s possible you are both correct

This in IMO a reliable source for that info

      https://www.mayoclinic.org/coronavirus-covid-19/vaccine-tracker

In your state there’s like a 20% difference between one dose and two doses (You can click on the state)

Also the lowest % across the country is people below 18 and that’s going to affect the final numbers

So if you are trying to get an accurate read of the %, just make sure you are aware of all the variations people are presenting the information. It’s not necessarily wrong – but it’s very possible to come down with two very different conclusions based on who you are looking at

6 rule changes in the NFL this year.

#1- No OT in preseason. Duh, the league catches up to common sense.

#2- No more than 9 players in the ‘set-up zone’ on kick returns. This is supposed to increase the chances of an onside kick recovery by the kicking team.

#3- Expansion of the duties of the replay official. Designed to give on-field officials more info from the replay official. Basically makes replay a two man job now. On-field official still has final say.

#4- Ensures enforcement of all accepted penalties committed by either team during successive PAT attempts. Weird scenario clarification for a once in a blue moon occurrence. Not worth writing it all.

#5- Penalty, plus loss of down on two forward passes. Previously was just a 5 yd penalty. Now it’s 5 yds and loss of down.

#6- The jersey numbers rule. Expands number choices for some positions.
