Season of discontent continues its downward spiral

Disappointment heaped upon disappointment. That’s what the 2021 Miami Dolphins season has become. This author is having a difficult time finding a bright spot to focus on to assist him in getting past this current 1-7 record, and the organizational dysfunction from the the top (Owner Stephen Ross) all the way down from the GM (Chris Grier), Head Coach (Brian Flores), the OCoCo’s (George Godsey & Eric Studesville), the DCo (Josh Boyer), the STCo (Danny Crossman), the rest of the assistant coaches and of course our players. It has been a failure at every avenue, not one good unit to look at and say “Well, at least the ____ is playing well. 29th in points scored and the same 29th in points allowed. 1 year ago, we were SIXTH in points allowed, SIXTH!!!! We were 15th in points scored, midpack.

In addition to the poor play of our football team, we have the team owner calling a QB on a different team on the phone to talk, a QB who is embroiled in a legal mess as he faces 22 civil lawsuits for sexual misconduct.

Mathematically, this team can still salvage a better than .500 season, which seems more ridiculous at this point than our current record of 1-7. If Xavien Howard doesn’t force that fumble, and recover it Game 1 in Foxborough we’re 0-8 folks!!! How have we fallen so far, so fast? Coach Flo looked he had this team on the upswing. Yes, lots of moves were made, but think about the players besides Kyle Van Noy that were traded or cut. Shaq Lawson was not good last season, he had a very subpar season for our Dolphins last year. Benardrick McKinney hasn’t seen the field and he’s healthy in 2021. Ryan Fitzpatrick is on IR for the season. I’d say one guy who may have helped this season may be C Ted Karras but even has only started 4 games this season, played in all 8. What’s basically happened is we have just regressed in every facet of the game. At this juncture, it’s hard to think anyone who is part of this team or organization is safe, all ripe to be fired, traded, or cut, sans the owner who unfortunately can’t be replaced until he decides to sell.

The vaunted secondary, second to none. X has 2 INT’s, and Elandon Roberts who appeared to be the target has one INT, and the rest ZERO. Yes, ZERO! The LB’s we thought were going to wreak havoc on NFL QB’s this season. Andrew Van Ginkel or (AVG at best) has 1/2 a sack. Rookie pass rush terror Jaelan Phillips has 1.5 sacks. Jerome Baker who has been injured most of the season has 1 sack. Emmanuel Ogbah leads the team with 2.5 sacks. Team can still focus and double team Ogbah while tight ends or RB’s can keep Phillips at bay. Shaq Lawson didn’t get it done in 2020 and the combo of AVG and Jaelan Phillips aren’t getting it done in 2021. Christian Wilkins has played OK, and Raekwon Davis was injured and gets a pass. Rookie safety Jevon Holland has been somewhat of a bright spot showing above average athletic ability but I’ve seen him toasted quite a few times. He hasn’t done anything extraordinary yet but he seems to have a good trajectory.

I think we have talent on this team, I really do. I think the coaches have dropped the ball this season, and I believe most of them, if not all of them will pay for that with their jobs. The CoCo’s will be gone. Josh Boyer has a bit of time to fix this defense but more than likely he’s gone too. Whether Head Coach Brian Flores can survive depends on the next 9 games and how the team does in them. He has a chance to come back. If he somehow survives, does GM Chris Grier keep his job? At the moment we have the #12 pick via SF. The Philadelphia Eagles own our 1st RD pick currently at #3. Truth is, while I’d love to have the better pick, we’d find some way to fuck it all up, as it appears we have been doing the last few years. in 2020 we had THREE 1st Round picks. We have an average young QB (Tua Tagovailoa) with our #5 pick. We have a struggling LT (Austin Jackson) who is now playing LG with our #18 pick and we have a defensive back (Noah Igbinoghene) who has only played and been active in 2 games thus far in 2021 after playing sparingly in 2020. Does it matter how low or high picks are for that matter how many when you continue to strike out? Out of the three first rounders, none of them are excelling to the point where they are considered a blue chip player. With our 2 second round picks in 2020 we have 2 starters, RG Robert Hunt and NT Raekwon Davis. Neither has been excellent, Hunt has struggled quite a bit lately at RG while Raekwon Davis showed lots of promise last season and was injured early this season and is slowly regaining his form. 2020 3rd RD pick Brandon Jones is slowly becoming part of the defense and has potential to steal the job from veteran Eric Rowe which could potentially give the Dolphins a nice young safety tandem of Holland and Jones.

The 2021 draft doesn’t seem as bad as the 2020 draft class. Jaylen Waddle is getting lots of targets, but far too many of them are within 10 yards of the LOS. It’s not a Tua, or a Waddle problem folks, it’s an O-line failure. Jaelan Phillips came to the Dolphins as a very athletic, diversified pass rusher. So far, he’s been stifled. He supposedly has a nice pass rush repertoire but it hasn’t been effective as of yet. S Jevon Holland seems to be the darling of this draft so far. OT Liam Eichenberg has played a lot but hasn’t shown he belongs at any particular O-line spot, whether it’s LT, LG, or RT. We’ll see if he develops. Honestly, it’s hard to gauge a player when a unit is playing so poorly, and our O-line has been the worst offender. TE Hunter Long who was hailed as the Gesicki replacement hasn’t quite hit the field running, and has been mostly inactive. You better hope he’s not the guy that replaces Mike Gesicki!!! The other 2 picks, OT Larnel Coleman and RB Gerrid Doaks haven’t seen the field and their fortunes or misfortunes remain to be seen.

All in all, 2 very disappointing drafts, probably much more with the 2020 draft class, considering we had a treasure trove of picks to improve our team and it’s yet to materialize. Chris Grier has to take the hit on that. If somehow he manages to keep his GM post, I’d expect our record at the end of the season will have to be much closer to .500 than it currently is. Same goes for Coach Flo, who built this coaching staff and elected to have Co Offensive Coordinators. That contemporary style most likely won’t be seen again in the NFL. This week we play the even more inept Houston Texans, whose QB our wonderful owner has outwardly courted. Oh, he doesn’t actually play for the Texans, but maybe he will eventually now that we didn’t actually trade for him. He’s been inactive all season so the Texans can, you know, trade him. Well, now, maybe their supposed top 10 QB will hit the field for his team. It won’t happen this week which means our putrid team will probably find it’s only week in which we will be the favorites this season. I’m so excited!!!

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Why didn’t you mention the #1 problem? Tua’s feet are just too small.

Can’t say I disagree with anything you’ve said Mike. I’ve been saying it myself. We’ve regressed in everything, even our automatic Kicker from last year has been unreliable. The on field product has to be an extension of the disfunction inside the building.

    Nice write up Mike E

  5. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

As for bright spots, I see plenty on an individual level. We have a roster with talent, it’s just not playing as a team and that’s on the coaching.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Which players that we have fo you consider potential blue chips?

      • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

We might differ on what a blue chip is, but we can build around Waddle, Gesicki, and Gaskin. Defense gets tricky because of the step back that we’ve taken, but I still like Baker, Wilkins, and Holland to solidify the middle. I don’t see any true superstars on our team, but we’ve got a lot of guys who are above average that are getting lost in the poor leadership.

  6. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Tua has a very weak arm, he can’t stretch the field, that leaves a crowded box, due to that we can’t run, we can’t score and it puts our D in a bad situation, makes our coaches look inept.
why else would they be going after Watson

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I respectfully disagree. Tua’s arm is fine not one NFL analyst of repute has said otherwise. Our problems of stretching the field are far more likely a result of combination of factors such as poor scheme, bad OL play and too many injuries in the WR corps yet again

  7. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

When your team plays over their heads for a year and a half as ours did, you frequently see it come crashing down as ours has, when too many things change

Flores’ arrogance has also lead to the fall from grace

Grier is taking some heat too

  8. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Went into the office yesterday for first time in a while. The conversation quickly turned to Ruggs. He’s a product of win at all cost Alabama. Other schools use the same approach.

Seems they may try to make an example out of him, and throw the book at him

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

They should. I don’t understand these NFL players still driving especially drunk. There’s no excuse and I heard that normally it’s a guaranteed 2-20 years for this.

  9. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Great article, Mike! I can’t really add anything. What is your thoughts on our final record? I’m thinking 3-14 but if things go well, 4-13? Lol

omar is in the facility, at the practice, talks to the players, i’m sure he has as good a grasp as any even if it doesn’t fit your agenda.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I have constantly found Omar wrong more often than right. I have repeatedly said and posted in the past that take whatever Omar says and believe the opposite and admittedly unscientifically I have found that to be true in recent years

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

how do you explain the constant short passes? the lack of big game performances with total yards, the lack of long td throws? now couple that with what’s being said in the video, omar says people inside the locker room are saying the same.
what does it take to convince you.
it would take a big game by tua to even consider changing my mind.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I think I have offered the explanations above, bad scheme, poor OL play and injuries to WRs and by the way he has had some really big games

  11. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Nice write, Mike E. You have definitely captured my current mood regarding our Phins. It really is BAD.

I’d add one more player to the mix on Defense who we don’t have this year: Bobby McCain. Sure, he wasn’t a beast or anything for us, but he was solid. He’d come flying off the edge last year and get a lot of QB pressures, forcing INTs and incompletions. Jevon Holland will ultimately become far better than McCain (at least we hope), but the growing pains and the loss of McCain shows, IMO.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t think McCain’s loss is a bad one. I was a perennial McCain defender but I think his purpose ran out last season. Holland has already proven adept at blitzing, he has 3 QB hits and 1 sack.

  12. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

SB – Gesicki still doesn’t have a contract, which is just about as bad as the lack of targets he gets here.

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    DeVante Parker WR, Miami Dolphins
    DeVante Parker
Dolphins head coach Brian Flores said DeVante Parker (hamstring, shoulder) had a setback in practice and is doubtful to play in Week 9 against the Texans.

Parker’s string of injuries continues unabated. Parker drafters should plan on being without Miami’s WR1 in what would have been a plus matchup against Houston. Parker’s absence is a boon for Jaylen Waddle and Mike Gesicki. In three games with Parker sidelined, Waddle has averaged 6.67 receptions on 9.67 targets. Gesicki should continue operating as a receiver against the Texans. He has tremendous upside.

  16. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I can’t remember a worse draft class than this upcoming 2022 class. There are only 2-4 players who are standouts at their position.

    Kayvon Thibodeaux, DE, Oregon
    Evan Neal, OT, Alabama
    Derek Stingley Jr., CB, LSU
    Kyle Hamilton, S, Notre Dame

I don’t see any QB worthy a top 10 pick. They are all projects IMO. Look at the top 20 stat leaders for QB. They are getting smaller every year. About 80% of the top 20 QB’s are 6’1 or smaller.

Kenny Pickett, 6’3, Pitt, might be the first off the board
Carson Strong 6’4, Nevada, is like a poor man’s Herbert (only due lack of big stage).

The only others with any size are 6’2. One I might take before the first 2 is Brennan Armstrong, 6’2, UVA. He is currently the passing leader but dude has some wheel’s. Big threat to run. He could leapfrog the other 2 as QB1.

Another who could sneak in the first round is Matt Corral, Ole Miss, if someone wants to take a chance on a 6′ 200 pound QB. He is a gamer.

We don’t need to draft a QB unless it is a late round prospect to groom as a backup like Tanner Mordecai, SMU, 6’2, 215 who has good tools to work with.

This was just an example to show how poor this upcoming draft may be.

OBJ a free agent. Man, this guy has really taken a bizarre NFL career path. Couldn’t even get the best out of him with his favorite buddy Jarvis Landry. Probably will end up on the Raiders.

    • twicethethe's avatar twicethethe says:

Not sure who will be willing to take him on after his latest antics to get released, but we know someone will – still a fair bit of talent there.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yes, and unfortunately, talent always opens doors in the NFL. Raiders sure could use him after losing Ruggs. Different player though, not sure if OBJ can ever be the big play machine he used to be.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

The Raiders. They have an opening at WR

      • twicethethe's avatar twicethethe says:

You both are right – Raiders would be the fit – question is does someone else claim him on waivers ahead of that and if would he want to play for a true contender instead. No point in picking him up if he doesn’t really want to play for your team.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

        I owe Mike E a beer

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

See, he unlike Tua can drive off his back foot and get power into his throws. Tua’s feet are so tiny they are like hooves. When he tries to drive off his back foot it sinks into the turf like a peg leg. It”s ALL about his tiny feet. Even the D is effected by his tiny little feet.

  20. twicethethe's avatar twicethethe says:

BBM – thanks for the early upcoming draft review. If it looks like a weak draft class then maybe that takes a tiny bit of the sting out of of giving up our first round pick?

  21. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

When did Rockfin turn into Rex Ryan?

  22. twicethethe's avatar twicethethe says:

Oh, and nice write Mike E! Circling the drain certainly seems to be the consensus feeling. Always hoping for something positive in the game – even a trick play or two to jumpstart things couldn’t hurt. I suppose actually attacking and not’ taking what the opposing team is giving’ would be asking too much though. But what have they got to lose now?

  23. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks all – I suppose the disdain for this team is supplying me the energy to keep writing. This really sucks though. I don’t really have a desire to watch this weekend, hard to waste 3 hours of the day watching them. I know we have a decent chance of winning this weekend, but unless we mop the floor with the hapless Texans, it’s kinda like who cares? Tua’s finger is injured besides the weekly DeVante Parker saga. Maybe Brisket gets another shot this week, either starting or in relief.

  26. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Ken, this is not a good class for many positions. I used QB as an example.

There are no elite RB’s. Kenneth Walker is the closest thing and I would love us to draft him but this regime won’t.

Breece Hall, Iowa State would be my next choice. Great combination of size and speed (220 and 4.43 40). Also a good receiver but has had a costly fumble or two.

IMO, there are no elite WR’s but one will probably go top 10. The big dude from USC, Drake London may sneak in there but he is just an athletic big target that struggles to get separation.

I like Jameson Williams of Alabama. A first year starter as a Junior but like what I have seen from him. Reminds me some of Devonta Smith since he is 6’2 188 and runs in mid 4.4s.

Another is Romeo Doubs of Nevada.

Also like the speedy Calvin Austin III of Memphis but there will be a number of small speedy guys this next draft.

We took a evening dolphin cruise. They were everywhere. One had caught a flounder, came up to the surface and tossed it in the air. Did it 3 times. I was like, “Son, stop playing with your food!”. Then two came up along side the boat and rolled on their side looking right at us. They looked so happy and content. Again, I was like, “Y’all must not keep up with the team”. LOL

Anyway, it was a nice break from negative Dolphin news.
    ——————-
One of the most cool experiences have ever had in my life. Everyone should put it on their bucket list. Maybe it is just the wake of the boat that gets them going but dolphins love to play with boats.

    • Phindog's avatar Phindog says:

When we lived in SoCal we would launch our boat out of Dana Point and frequently come across a dolphin stampede of hundreds to thousands of dolphins. It was mind blowing to say the least. 🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐕

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’ve done a Dolphins cruise and I’ve done whale watching….. will take the dolphins every time. On the whales it is is like you are hunting them, and they stay underwater a long time. The dolphins just surround the boat and say “we are here to play.”

  33. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Good angst-filled write Mike E. Guess way things have gone time to be more columnist and less sports reporter.

“If Xavien Howard doesn’t force that fumble, and recover it Game 1 in Foxborough we’re 0-8 folks!!!” is true, but we also lost 3 games on the last play. So could be 4-4 too if want to play the what if game.

  34. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

If we end up picking around #13, I see us picking OT, CB or Edge.

At #13, I would be ok with
    OT Charles Cross, Miss State
    CB Kaair Elam, UF
DL DeMarvin Leal, Texas A&M, reminds me of a Zack Seiler type
    LB Devin Lloyd, Utah

I am just not sure about the Edge rushers in this draft. Out of the top 10 edge rushers for this next draft, none are in the top 15 in recorded sacks this season. The closest is Adian Hutchison from Michigan and he is tied for 20th.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Meant to add that the Edge defender I like after Kayvon Thibodeaux is Sam Williams, 6’4 265, from Ole Miss but he is not even ranked in the top 10 in most big boards, yet. He has 8.5 sacks so far this season and 18.5 in just over 2.5 seasons with 5 FF and 1 INT.

Is it that he’s that foolish/stupid? Is it that he just has bad luck? Is it that the NFL wants to get rid of him for some reason by sabotaging him?

I mean, it’s just unbelievable that one man can have so many issues come up regarding the team he owns. For the sake of Edmond “Clyde” Gates, I’m going to mention some of his ‘gates’…

    Sparano-gate [undermining Tony Sparano (RIP)]
Billick-gate (publicly chastizing Brian Billick over crumbs)
Ireland-gate (keeping Jeff Ireland on for FAR too long, planes flying banners over Davie)
    Helicopter-gate (dancing with Jeff Fisher)

Bully-gate (Richie Incognito and Jon Martin)
Tax-payer-gate (expecting the tax-payers to pay for massive stadium upgrades before finally fronting the bill himself)
    Manning-gate (dancing with Peyton Manning)
    Watson-gate (dancing with Deshaun Watson)

the real key to losing weight is to fast, she should try to work to a 12-6 fast eat at 2pm then again at 8pm. once she accomplishes that go to a 24 hr fast, eat once a day at 8pm.

    she will melt quickly.

if it’s sweet, tell her to spit it out.

insulin resistance is the cause of weight gain, your cells are so packed with insulin they shut down and store the rest as fat. insulin sensitive is where they are not full and can take insulin, she wants to be insulin sensitive.
also the fasting allows your body to repair itself as it gets a break from having to use resources to digest food.
i drink coffee in the morning and eat once a day.

eggs are probably the best food you can eat health wise.
the whites are not that good, that’s what the chicken eats as its growing, full of growth hormones, the yolk is the actual chicken.
i mix 5 yolks with 2 whites, i cook them but dont over cook them.

i’ve tried them all, the key is insulin sensitivity and fasting, when you get use to eating veggies and meat that’s what you crave and its very satisfying, she wont be hungry once she gets on the program, its getting on it thats tough.

I agree with just about everything you said regarding food and eating properly, as I have practiced this for most since the early 90’s.

Hopefully, you will a minor correction….

You do not want your body to go into ketosis as that state is one of producing ketone bodies. Have you ever seen pictures of starving people/skeletons with big bellies. That is an extreme case of ketosis and ketone bodies are pathological.

You want to change the metabolism of your body from a carbohydrate metabolism to a ketogenic metabolism. The body metabolizes what it eats and that metabolism is affected by what it invests.

Eating breads, pastries, donuts, sugar basically (carbohydrates) changes the body’s normal ketogenic metabolism to a a very unhealthy carbohydrate metabolism, thus the insulin insensitivity.

I eat exactly like you do, but since Mrs. K died I have blown it up with alcohol consumption.

I believe/hope this time away in CR will help me get back on track. It’s day one.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

a donut is at the top of the list to the most unhealthiest thing you can eat, it’s not food, those carbs you mentioned are starchy carbs, Ketosis is a process that happens when your body doesn’t have enough carbohydrates to burn for energy. Instead, it burns fat and makes things called ketones, which it can use for fuel.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

That’s why it’s called ketogenic metabolism (burns fat and protein)….you don’t want your body to form ketone bodies which is pathological. There’s difference between ketosis and ketogenic metabolism.

My professional training/studies about oils v clarified butter are a little different.

Coconut oil has a higher smoke point than most vegetable or nut oils, but not as high as ghee (clarified butter). Therefore, it doesn’t go rancid or break down at higher temps. It is also mostly a saturated fat.
That’s not necessarily a good thing.

Ghee contains saturated, unsaturated, and polyunsaturated fats and arguably is much healthier.

It’s a complex topic to say the least. I don’t hang my hat on one is the best, for sure. Really, depends on what you’re cooking/preparing.

Extra virgin olive oil (unrefined) is great at low temps and room temp for salads, for example.

Processing of any vegetable oil destroys most health benefits.
