Season of discontent continues its downward spiral

Disappointment heaped upon disappointment. That’s what the 2021 Miami Dolphins season has become. This author is having a difficult time finding a bright spot to focus on to assist him in getting past this current 1-7 record, and the organizational dysfunction from the the top (Owner Stephen Ross) all the way down from the GM (Chris Grier), Head Coach (Brian Flores), the OCoCo’s (George Godsey & Eric Studesville), the DCo (Josh Boyer), the STCo (Danny Crossman), the rest of the assistant coaches and of course our players. It has been a failure at every avenue, not one good unit to look at and say “Well, at least the ____ is playing well. 29th in points scored and the same 29th in points allowed. 1 year ago, we were SIXTH in points allowed, SIXTH!!!! We were 15th in points scored, midpack.

In addition to the poor play of our football team, we have the team owner calling a QB on a different team on the phone to talk, a QB who is embroiled in a legal mess as he faces 22 civil lawsuits for sexual misconduct.

Mathematically, this team can still salvage a better than .500 season, which seems more ridiculous at this point than our current record of 1-7. If Xavien Howard doesn’t force that fumble, and recover it Game 1 in Foxborough we’re 0-8 folks!!! How have we fallen so far, so fast? Coach Flo looked he had this team on the upswing. Yes, lots of moves were made, but think about the players besides Kyle Van Noy that were traded or cut. Shaq Lawson was not good last season, he had a very subpar season for our Dolphins last year. Benardrick McKinney hasn’t seen the field and he’s healthy in 2021. Ryan Fitzpatrick is on IR for the season. I’d say one guy who may have helped this season may be C Ted Karras but even has only started 4 games this season, played in all 8. What’s basically happened is we have just regressed in every facet of the game. At this juncture, it’s hard to think anyone who is part of this team or organization is safe, all ripe to be fired, traded, or cut, sans the owner who unfortunately can’t be replaced until he decides to sell.

The vaunted secondary, second to none. X has 2 INT’s, and Elandon Roberts who appeared to be the target has one INT, and the rest ZERO. Yes, ZERO! The LB’s we thought were going to wreak havoc on NFL QB’s this season. Andrew Van Ginkel or (AVG at best) has 1/2 a sack. Rookie pass rush terror Jaelan Phillips has 1.5 sacks. Jerome Baker who has been injured most of the season has 1 sack. Emmanuel Ogbah leads the team with 2.5 sacks. Team can still focus and double team Ogbah while tight ends or RB’s can keep Phillips at bay. Shaq Lawson didn’t get it done in 2020 and the combo of AVG and Jaelan Phillips aren’t getting it done in 2021. Christian Wilkins has played OK, and Raekwon Davis was injured and gets a pass. Rookie safety Jevon Holland has been somewhat of a bright spot showing above average athletic ability but I’ve seen him toasted quite a few times. He hasn’t done anything extraordinary yet but he seems to have a good trajectory.

I think we have talent on this team, I really do. I think the coaches have dropped the ball this season, and I believe most of them, if not all of them will pay for that with their jobs. The CoCo’s will be gone. Josh Boyer has a bit of time to fix this defense but more than likely he’s gone too. Whether Head Coach Brian Flores can survive depends on the next 9 games and how the team does in them. He has a chance to come back. If he somehow survives, does GM Chris Grier keep his job? At the moment we have the #12 pick via SF. The Philadelphia Eagles own our 1st RD pick currently at #3. Truth is, while I’d love to have the better pick, we’d find some way to fuck it all up, as it appears we have been doing the last few years. in 2020 we had THREE 1st Round picks. We have an average young QB (Tua Tagovailoa) with our #5 pick. We have a struggling LT (Austin Jackson) who is now playing LG with our #18 pick and we have a defensive back (Noah Igbinoghene) who has only played and been active in 2 games thus far in 2021 after playing sparingly in 2020. Does it matter how low or high picks are for that matter how many when you continue to strike out? Out of the three first rounders, none of them are excelling to the point where they are considered a blue chip player. With our 2 second round picks in 2020 we have 2 starters, RG Robert Hunt and NT Raekwon Davis. Neither has been excellent, Hunt has struggled quite a bit lately at RG while Raekwon Davis showed lots of promise last season and was injured early this season and is slowly regaining his form. 2020 3rd RD pick Brandon Jones is slowly becoming part of the defense and has potential to steal the job from veteran Eric Rowe which could potentially give the Dolphins a nice young safety tandem of Holland and Jones.

The 2021 draft doesn’t seem as bad as the 2020 draft class. Jaylen Waddle is getting lots of targets, but far too many of them are within 10 yards of the LOS. It’s not a Tua, or a Waddle problem folks, it’s an O-line failure. Jaelan Phillips came to the Dolphins as a very athletic, diversified pass rusher. So far, he’s been stifled. He supposedly has a nice pass rush repertoire but it hasn’t been effective as of yet. S Jevon Holland seems to be the darling of this draft so far. OT Liam Eichenberg has played a lot but hasn’t shown he belongs at any particular O-line spot, whether it’s LT, LG, or RT. We’ll see if he develops. Honestly, it’s hard to gauge a player when a unit is playing so poorly, and our O-line has been the worst offender. TE Hunter Long who was hailed as the Gesicki replacement hasn’t quite hit the field running, and has been mostly inactive. You better hope he’s not the guy that replaces Mike Gesicki!!! The other 2 picks, OT Larnel Coleman and RB Gerrid Doaks haven’t seen the field and their fortunes or misfortunes remain to be seen.

All in all, 2 very disappointing drafts, probably much more with the 2020 draft class, considering we had a treasure trove of picks to improve our team and it’s yet to materialize. Chris Grier has to take the hit on that. If somehow he manages to keep his GM post, I’d expect our record at the end of the season will have to be much closer to .500 than it currently is. Same goes for Coach Flo, who built this coaching staff and elected to have Co Offensive Coordinators. That contemporary style most likely won’t be seen again in the NFL. This week we play the even more inept Houston Texans, whose QB our wonderful owner has outwardly courted. Oh, he doesn’t actually play for the Texans, but maybe he will eventually now that we didn’t actually trade for him. He’s been inactive all season so the Texans can, you know, trade him. Well, now, maybe their supposed top 10 QB will hit the field for his team. It won’t happen this week which means our putrid team will probably find it’s only week in which we will be the favorites this season. I’m so excited!!!

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

It cracks me up that ORob rails against Tua for allegedly not getting the ball downfield but he sings the praises of Brissett who is the king of dink and dunk. Every time he tried to go downfield he was horrible. He missed Merritt who was wide open

  2. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

brissett has an arm, tua doesn’t, opposing defensive coordinators know this. it affects their game plan. brissett can beat you deep, tua can’t

  3. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

One conclusion came to today is that Wilson is done after this season.

Parker, Fuller and Preston are out and he can’t do more than one catch? Based on who he was billed as and his pay he should have been competing with Waddle and Gesicki for most looks.

    Over.

  4. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Who is our best O-lineman? Once you pick one, what has that player accomplished? We don’t have an NFL caliber OL. Is there potential with some of these young guys? Potentially in time but it’s not there now.

How many times did we run today for a loss or no gain? I’d say at least 8. Then a bunch for only 2-3 yards. Add that to not allowing a pocket most of the time. How can you run an offense like that.

Regardless of what this team is in 2022, we must add proven vet OL to this group in FA. This is the weak link. It trickles down throughout the rest of the team.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

The run game bothers me as well. And think a big part of that is think our best O-lineman is average, despite all the draft picks. Our “stud” LT has been shifted to LG. Our bulldozer G (Kindley) doesn’t even play.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Austin Jackson has been playing well at OG. Eichenberg is our best OT

  5. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

ORob, with all due respect I don’t think anyone respects anything about Brissett’s game. As Ken said he missed a wide open Merritt with a weak throw

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – I think you’re the only one that respects Brissett’s arm. I hope he appreciates it.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He mocks Tua’s 3/4 delivery at times yet Brissett puts himself in situations where he throws laredo and is totally inaccurate. As for the deep arm, haven’t seen it from Brissett. He rolls so deep in the pocket that when he completes a 15 yard pass it’s for a 3 yard gain. That’s why he’s a backup.

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

ORob, are you purposely saying the opposite of reality for kicks?

  10. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Our losses are not really due to poor QB play. We should move on from that. It’s our OC’s and our OL. Look at where the Pats are. Almost tied for 1st in the division with mediocre QB play at best, dink and dunk and can’t throw down field.

Defense has let down to often. OL lets down way to often. Our OC’s can’t call a game for shit.

Stanger, some of us are not impressed by beating a bad team at home when there were 9 turnovers in the game, not sure how you don’t seem to understand that. This was not that much better than a loss IMO. The game sucked, if we won by 40, great, but this was a horrible game with 2 horrible teams

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Dolphins suck and are one of the worst teams in the league. Think we are a rebuild and 2-3 years away from even smelling the playoffs. But I knew that before today’s game. Didn’t you? I’m left wondering what you are looking for. And we won. Which as a Dolphins fan I liked.

      • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I am not looking for anything, this season is list and I am pissed and have been. I never imagined this game would change anything, I am just reaffirming how I feel about this organization and team. I have become disillusioned with this franchise, nothing will change that in the short term.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And I have agreed with each and every word you have written tonight except when said the D played well today and you seemed to think not. Is your problem with what I have written that was happy to get a win? I’m pissed at the team and the season too. So I’m right with you. Just don’t get why you seem mad at me.

  29. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I’m glad we won; I never want us to lose, especially when we don’t have our first round pick at stake. Not sure if this was mentioned, but we need to thank Tyrod Taylor for this win. He missed some WIDE open receivers (Amendola streaking up the sideline comes to mind), and if he hadn’t done so we would have lost this game. Brissett is beyond awful. Hopefully Tua is back next week:

  30. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Not sure what to take away from this game: our Defense did look good today (against the worst football team in the league, so there’s that), but we won in a 1-score game (TD + 2-point conversion)… so what does that say about our Offense, with or without Tua?

We used the gimmick Wildcat to get Gaskin one TD for us, and we probably got lucky with Brissett to Mack ‘MF’n’ Hollins (luv that cat!) for the other TD.

A meaningless win against the worst team in the NFL, and we just barely beat ’em… at home. It honestly feels like we lost the game today. Our future feels empty, after all of the early picks we selected over the last 2 Drafts.

And trust you me… there’s something suspicious going on with Tua’s situation, that he didn’t get the start today regarding his finger. After Brissett was announced as the starter, Tua was back on the field throwing with no problems pre-game (I’ll see if I can find the video from earlier).

If I didn’t know any better, Tua told the team that he wasn’t good to go today at the last second on purpose. Methinks this situation is about to get BAD with the way Tua’s been treated, and I suspect that Tua was perfectly fine to play today.

And no, I don’t believe Tua is acting of his own volition… his agent and his trainer are VERY upset at the Phins organization and are protecting their client.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I was at the game- Tua was throwing DURING the game as well. Seemed odd to me.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

They were commenting during the game that Tua could throw, he didn’t have pain but the fracture was still swollen so he could not properly grip the ball especially for deep throws. They said he is likely to play Thursday

Interesting that Tua continued to throw DURING the game as well. If his finger was all swole up like some reports have mentioned, then continuing to throw would only make the finger swell up more or stay swollen. Something is out of place!

    Brian,

Truth be told, we should have drafted Micah Parsons @ R1P12 this past Draft. He is TEARING IT UP for the Cowboys this year, including 2.5 sacks today.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Did they win?

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Irrelevant, Bro. That Cowboy Offense was terrible today… just like ours. And it’s SAD, man… we added Will Fuller and Jalen Waddle to make our Offense ‘unstoppable’… and to prop Tua up for a proper assessment. That’s not gone so well, either.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Why bring up Parsons then? Their defense didn’t play well either.

  40. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Is it that we make terrible Draft picks who can’t be coached up…
    or
Is it that we make great Draft picks who coaches fail to coach up…

OR … to frame it in a different manner…

Is it that we have terrible coaching that great drafting can’t fix…
    or
Is it that we have great coaching that poor drafting can’t fix…

It’s always interesting how a question is framed, is it not?

I’ll get to the point… I have absolutely ZERO ideas about how we went from 10-6 last year to 2-7 (thus far) this year, so as to assign blame: who, what, where, when, how, and why.

Yeah, we got a little too young on the O-Line. Yeah, we got a little too young on Defense. Yeah, we’ve been barely under the salary cap since game 1. Yeah, Tua’s been hurt. Yeah, the dick-fingered owner screwed up, yet again. Yeah, we didn’t address the RB position. Yeah, we traded two 1st rounders to acquire Waddle. Yeah, we did this. Yeah, we did that.

I’m >THIS< close to following in Rockphin's shoes, so as to say "BLOW IT UP!!!". I'm not there… not quite yet… but I'm getting closer after every game. Something is fundamentally WRONG with this team… and yes, it begins with the owner.

    • Phindog's avatar Phindog says:

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah the OL is not good enough. Stop right there. That is the main issue.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I HONESTLY believe we’re right about that (the O-Line)… but there’s something more than just that, IMO. You do realize that we came close (not as close as some think) to trading X to the Ravens, correct? And we damn near traded DeVante to the Colts.

We should have been sellers at the trade deadline after a disappointing 1-7, right?

We’re keeping our blue-chippers for a reason… and I think ya know why.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    That’s not what you said.
    —————–
What I said is that we were NOT sellers at the trade deadline… and we probably should have been after a 1-7 start.

We KEPT the likes of Xavien Howard and DeVante Parker, after teams came a knockin’ on our door. Why do you suppose that is? We want to use their (for lack of better word) blue-chip status for a future trade, is my best guess. And for you know who… SMH if it comes to fruition.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Who came knockin’ on our door? Howard is a tough trade and you know that. Parker for what? He can’t stay on the field. And how does making these trades help us? You’re down on everyone making decisions.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

As I stated above: the Ravens came to us about trading X, and the Colts came to us about trading DeVante.

YES, X is a tough trade, agreed. And as BBMike stated earlier today, we’re going to face the same kind of matter with him in 2022 regarding his pay… might have been nice to have somebody take him off our hands for two 1st-rounders, but the Ravens wouldn’t commit to it.

DeVante? I hear ya on him, too. Rumor was for a 3rd rounder from the Colts??? Don’t recall exactly at the moment. You’d THINK we’d try to get as much back in the here and now regarding trades… but we reportedly said NO to both the Ravens and the Colts.

Do you understand where I’m coming from? 😉

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

  44. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Stanger,

To reply more fully, I keep hoping to see some kind of spark, that turnaround they keep mentioning, anything. As a fan, I’m hoping for something and I still haven’t seen it by Game 9. I don’t see the turnaround coming with this regime. We play terrible every week and it’s not just the offense. A competent QB would have scored a LOT on this team…just like every competent team has. This is Year 3 and it keeps getting worse!

I can’t imagine anyone wanting this regime to have more time. Does anyone think Gase could do well today? If we had kept Gase, does anyone think we would be successful? This regime is just like Gase’s You don’t need half a decade to understand incompetence especially when you’ve seen it for decades. None of our removed HCs have ever successfully coached again. These guys will be in that group at some point. They don’t have what it takes to compete at this level…at any level of our current organization. Next week will reinforce it yet again, as the Ravens dominate us yet again.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And you bring up what 2-7 has put in my face, which never thought would have been there — Do Flores and Grier get replaced? And obviously with them most of the coaching staff and some of the players (especially if new schemes involved).

I don’t know the answer to that, but don’t blame anyone for brining it up.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

ORob, I’m glad that you’re not our QB coach. Brissett is very inaccurate- didn’t you notice those incredible catches by Gesicki was because the throws were off? He easily could have thrown two more picks yesterday. I’m not putting it all on him, most of the blame on this offense goes to the OL, but Tua gives us the best chance to win.

  48. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

it’s funny how you guys are fiercly loyal to the guy who plays the one position that’s killing this team,
you have to open your eyes and see what’s happening, it’s very obvious.
tua can not throw the ball downfield, not sure why, only thing i can come up with is his weak arm wont allow it.
if i were him, i’d tell the coaches GFY, i’m airing it out, “fck that play waddle, go deep”
the dink and dunk is what’s wrong with this team, it affects the entire team, the ol, the running game, defense, it also makes the coaches look bad. opposing Ds are crowding the LOS and daring you to beat them deep, the storys out, everyone who plays miami will do that.

wake up and smell the coffeee

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

So why didn’t Brissett throw the ball downfield? It’s because neither him nor Tua has the the time for that play to materialize. I’m not saying that Tua has been impressive in the deep ball department, but he hasn’t exactly had the time to gain valuable in game experience with it either. The OL is the MAJOR issue with this team- our QB had the long run of the day with 7 yards- seven!!!! Tua can definitely be better, but he’s not getting a ton of help.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

he did throw it downfield to Waddle, the interception.
it’s not really about throwing the ball downfield as opposed to being able to throw it downfield. if the opposing DC knows you can beat him deep he will guard against that, for whatever reason Tua doesn’t have that ability, and the word is out.

  49. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

it’s like working on my car, i always try to get the hard bolt out first, then the easy ones. it’s easy to throw dink and dunks, much harder to have a consistent running game, you have to focus on what it takes to be a good run team first, then fill in the pieces for the passing game, you have to use the entire field in the passing game also as it stretches the D out and creates room for the running game.
we don’t do that. this dink and dunk offense is a sure way to lose your job.

No one should be excited about yesterday’s defense. Houston moved the ball at will and had it not been for Taylor repeatedly gifting Miami the ball, they would have easily won.

Offensively Brisket did his best to out-suck Taylor. Inaccurate, slow, poor decisions, generally sloppy. Threw one long ball all day which he should have run for the 3-YRDS needed for a first and missed the WR by a mile. Need 12 yards? Throw a RB flare at the line of scrimmage for 3. Bad, just bad. Not even a quality back up.

Running game not only the lines fault. Watched both RB miss holes and cut back into traffic instead of bouncing outside when there was no one there to stop them.

Coaching is inexplicable. Under 2 minutes up by 8, ball in field goal range, one of the games best kickers, wind at your back and you take the delay of game and punt!?! NO…YOU KICK THE FIELD GOAL AND MAKE IT A TWO SCORE GAME!!!

    *******

Yeah I agree with both, especially SB here

The coaches lack any ability to adjust or don’t want to

I don’t get this offense at all
If you are afraid to throw it deep bc your OL won’t hold that’s one thing
But don’t run this weird high octane shotgun spread formation just to take it to 3rd down on every set of plays

They run their offense like an 80s run heavy offense, except entirely our offense the shotgun formation

Why not just adjust and start running some old formations and some Singleback stuff instead of so much shotgun with the same sort of run plays over and over again

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

The one area where I give the OCs a bit of a pass is that are O has not really been healthy all year. Our was supposed to feature Parker and Fuller taking the top off of the D. That was supposed to open the middle of the field for Gisecki. That was supposed to create space underneath for Waddle to create mismatches. The problem is that lineup has not been on the field this year. Which is a separate issue with our FO personnel decisions

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Even with a healthy Parker it’s been a sluggish offense

There’s also no reason they can’t use waddle for that same purpose too
        They just don’t

And even if that was a viable excuse, it’s a perfect reason to adjust – but they are just stuck on this concept that they should run every okay out of shotgun formations

I don’t think you should give the OCs a pass for that

They are really bad coaches. It’s the biggest culprit in why we are 2-7 now
Not the QB, the injuries, the personnel moved by Grier or not even Ross tripping over his over feet

        The coaches are imbeciles

  64. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Mike Gesicki is on pace to put up some good numbers

He’s going to get paid this off-season

I really hope the Dolphins lock him up. This team has had a real problem letting talent go through coaching changes and it really affects the ability to be competitive

This years team is a little different than prior years when we have been losing. I think we have a lot of talent we should be keeping and preparing for next staff

I may be crazy but I even think there is some talent none OL we should invest in

  65. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

So we are at 9 instead of 3 which is not so bad. Keep rooting against SF

9 is a good spot to land an OT if that the direction we go

  66. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

As i said yesterday, I take nothing positive from this win. Too me, a perfect representation as to how bad this team is being led and coached is reflected in the decision to challenge a 2 yard completion from the 6 to the 4 yard line. a successful challenge would not have prevented a first down as it was goal to go anyway. Mind boggling to me. Glad we get to show how bad we are on national TV this week. SMH

  67. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

In terms of the draft, I do not rule out drafting a QB

The top 4 prospects as far as I am concerned are
    Malik Willis
    Matt Corral
    Sam Howell and
    Carson strong

There’s a couple of others like Pickett, Ridder and Rattler

I don’t think it’s a Trevor Lawrence type of year
But when you get past that, there’s probably 3-4 first round prospects and a really good chance a guy who can be starter material ends up going in the 2nd or 3rd

So I think we need to keep an open mind about drafting QBs

Management has already shown they don’t want to invest in Tua

I would rather just keep drafting QBs than trading picks for one, especially one as troubled as Watson

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

It is a horrible QB class. There is no one coming out who is a better prospect than Tua

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        That’s just really shortsighted

There’s probably at least 3 first rounders
And the closer you get to the draft the more the hype will escalate

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

There will be people and drafted high just like Mitchell Trubisky was. None of this class is as good of a prospect as Tua. I would rather see us focused on expanding our talent on the roster rather than setting up another QB for failure. We need OL, RB, WR and LBs badly. Get talent around our QB and then let’s see what he can do

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

We only have needs bc we miss so much

It doesn’t really matter what your needs are if you suck at filling them
There’s a couple of positions we can write off bc the player has played so well
But there’s no reason to write off drafting a QB

The reality is we might be able to do better at QB

There’s actually not a lot of RBs or WRs setting themselves a party right now

We might just focus ion pass rushers, OL and LBs

But when you are this bad, and you have talent on the roster, I think best player available is the way to go

And that maybe be a QB – probably not with a top 10 pick, but in the 2nd or 3rd round – maybe

  68. Ken's avatar Ken says:

To the decision up the page I agreed with the decision to punt as opposed to kick the FG. It would have been a long FG around 50 yards. If you missed you give up field position. Longer FGs are easier to block. A block could be returned for. TD. Instead we did the right thing. Give the other team a long field where they have to score a TD and get a 2 point conversion. The metrics in that situation is to punt and we executed perfectly placing the ball at the 2

    ________________________________________________
You disagree with me but fail to have reason and solution. anyone can disagree.

it’s more than the OL, it’s the scheme.
we pass twice as much as we run, we have an inbalanced attack. add that to the fact that we have no deep threat and are unable to stretch the field. causes a cascade of issues, more blitzing and a crowded box. if you’re able to stretch the field this same OL would look great.

so please tell your wisdom and what above that i said is incorrect?

    I’m all ears

  71. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

the scheme is not conducive for winning in the NFL, you have to be a run first offense, then play action works, to have a run first offense you have to have a deep threat to stretch the field and make room for your RBs.
we have a very weak run & shoot offense which has been proven doesn’t work and add that to a weak ass QB.

Rob, I agree we do not run enough. Again, it does not matter how much you average per carry. I said last week Derrick Henry ran 28 times and only gained 2.4 per carry. They won. Pats won yesterday. Mac Jones was 12-18 for 139 with 1 TD and 1 INT. Not very good but they ran the ball on 34 plays and won. The week before, Mac Jones was 18-35 for 217 and 0 TD, 0 INT. Again, not very good but they also ran the ball 35 times at 3.7 a carry and won.

They need to abandon RPO and let this OL attack.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It’s not quite as bad as the Gase offense IMO
Bc in the Gase offense we were basically just using the borders of the field and didn’t throw anything in the middle

They can actually tweet this offense and fix it

But they need a lot more routes that go deeper
They need to avoid crowded areas with receivers
They need better timing on play calls

I would not be mad, for instance if you picked up 6 yards on a short route in first down. That actually effective IMO

But they persistently waste first downs and sometimes waste 2nd downs too on the draw play from shotgun that everyone knows is coming

They should also work in some creativity in the run game

I was watching the Ravens offense
      And it’s a similar offense
Most of the passing game is quick underneath stuff

But they sometimes work in some different running plays
They even line the RB behind the QB or okay 2 rbs at once (modern day blasphemy)

They can easily work in a little more creativity in n the running game and be an effective offense

To me this offense feels like a stripped down version of the Patriots offense in n the final years of Brady’s career there without the deep routes to juat kid things up. The Patriots had the same QB for more than a decade – so they kept adding to it and it was a big playbook where the team had a comfort level

Here they give us a limited playbook that no one is familiar with

It’s like a dimestore ripoff of the Patriots offense

      They can tweak it
They just need to be creative
And before they get more creative
They need to get the fundamentals right
And to do that they need to get organized
And they aren’t getting organized bc the coaching doesn’t see their own flaws

  79. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

ORob may be onto something, folks. We played very conservatively against the Patsies* in New England for our first win of the season. Tua wasn’t trying to bomb his way to victory.

What was it, three plays into the Buffalo game when Tua’s ribs got broken? We didn’t get to see if our strategy was going to change and have him go deep.

My money is on Tua can’t throw deep right now due to his ribs still recovering. It’s going to be a bit until his ribs are 100%. That is a VERY painful injury and Tua is still on the mend.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

In other words, it’s not as though Tua doesn’t possess a deep ball (we all saw it with regularity at Alabama and even in TC this season), but he CAN’T go deep right now due to his broken (and still mending) ribs.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Tua threw deep against New England including deep shots to both Waddle and Parker which were both complete. His ribs are not preventing him from throwing deep right now it is swelling in his fingers that developed the evening after the second Buffalo loss. Our multiple centers go down one after the other. Our rookie T Eich seems to be having a tough time cutting it. Only normals on the line seem to be Hunt and Davis (and that is not saying normal is good).
