Week 10 – Ravens @ Dolphins

This must be how Dolphins players see the Ravens, because we play them as if we’re terrified of them. I’ve documented here our failures against the Ravens, but lest you forget, our last 3 meetings with the Ravens we’ve been massacred, bludgeoned and beaten and outscored 137-16. No typo. ONE HUNDRED THIRTY SEVEN to SIXTEEN. The Ravens are a historically well coached team, and since John Harbaugh took the reins, the Ravens since 2008 are 135-85, good for a .625 winning percentage.. That’s NFL royalty right there. The Dolphins on the other hand, since 2008 are 98-110. No longer among the best teams in the NFL, the Dolphins have been clearly in the bottom half of the NFL 32. In addition, during John Harbaugh’s successful reign beginning in 2008, the Dolphins have employed 5 different Head Coaches, Tony Sparano, Todd Bowles, Joe Philbin, Adam Gase and now Brian Flores. Brian Flores at the moment is sliding downhill and more than likely tonight’s meeting with the Ravens will leave him and the Dolphins on shakier ground.

The Dolphins stumbled and bumbled through 5 turnovers to eek out a victory over the equally hapless Houston Texans, you know, the team with the QB who doesn’t play that has 22 civil suits lodged against him, the one that our team owner Stephen Ross, desperate fuck is he, personally calls said QB to have a little chat. (Disgraceful!!!). Not going to spend any more time on that game, it was awful, admittedly I only watched bits and pieces which is all this excuse of a team deserves at this point. This week we play the the big boys, the bullies, the kind of team that will put their foot on your neck and keep it there until 60 minutes are up. The Ravens are the antithesis of the Texans, they are buttoned up, they have the same system and coach for quite a while now and they are a perennial winning franchise. This what we hope the Dolphins become. Last year Brian Flores inspired us to believe that we were heading in that direction. BITCHSLAP!!! Back to reality dreamer!!!

The Ravens are a running team, and it’s mostly their dangerous QB Lamar Jackson doing the running. He actually leads the Ravens with 600 yards rushing, followed by a trio of “once weres” in Latavius Murray, Devonta Freeman and Le’Veon Bell and most likely never will be in Ty’Son Williams. The quartet of aforementioned RB’s have just 62 more rushing yards combined than the QB (662-600). Our leading rusher is Myles Gaskin with 313 yards. Our RB’s have accounted for all of TWO TD’s this season on the ground. That’s how easy it is to get 2-7. Not one of our RB’s is averaging more than 3.8 YPC and our starter Myles Gaskin is averaging 3.6. There’s an O-line problem, and a gameplan problem. Just because you can’t run successfully doesn’t mean you don’t do it. We have a measly 158 rush attempts this season.

Anyway, if you’re watching tonight, best of luck to you, I recommend being on a soft, cushioned couch near no sharp edges and I’d probably lay off the heavy alcohol if you tend to get ornery and violent. Your house will thank you. I most likely won’t watch this one from start to finish but I do think there’s a part of me, the sadistic and masochistic part of me that wants to flip on the game and see another 59-10 slaughter so I can see the carnage. I don’t want Tua to get injured and I’m not even sure if his finger is still swollen if he should play at all. This Ravens defense doesn’t have the teeth they used to have but they do have an excellent Head Coach who will find weaknesses and there are 5 of them on the field every week right in front of either #1 or #14.

Note: Boulder – I just saw your comment pending this morning, I approved it, so if you happen to check back, you can now post freely if you choose to do so. Welcome back!! Sorry we missed it.

I’d also just like to say thanks to Mike E especially but also anyone else who contributes to this site. Bookman (in jest) said the other night it’s silly. It is, but along with being highly informative, it’s also very entertaining due to a collective sense of humour which stretches all the way back to FFR and his naked cheerleaders and Randy with his bucket right through to the present day with Piggy and his Samurai and inquisitive burrowing rodents. This is what binds the “company of bloggers” together despite any other apparent differences.

I love your articles too Mike E. The research you put into them is a credit to you. As mentioned previously, I won’t be watching the 1:20am (here) kick off – will try to find highlights on Sky tomorrow. I fear a bloodbath but hope springs eternal.

I hate losing to the Ravens more than the Jets, but I’m not sure what we gain by playing Tua tonight. It’s not like they’d put him in a position to be successful anyway.

  5. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I expect tonight to be the straw that breaks the camel’s back, so to speak. Ross will see the 4th ass beating in the last four matchups and a combined score of 179-28 and say “No mas”.

The question will be when does he swing the axe?

  6. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I’ve always love when people make the argument that the reason we aren’t attempting to run the ball is because we aren’t successful at it, but we sure as heck aren’t successful at passing the ball and we continue to do that for no reason.

  7. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Good write up Mike! I didn’t even notice a typo. 😉 I appreciate the extra work you do to keep the board fresh. It really does take effort to put aside the time from your everyday life to sit and write a new article every few days.

But when you call say a run play and the RB gets hit behind the LOS what did it have to do with how they called it? If you don’t block a pass play, same thing. When we all agree that our OL is a weak link, it really all starts there…
    ———————
YUP, and we absolutely concur. What should we do about it in order to fix it? I’m at loss, other than to bring one of the better O-Line coordinators in the game to Miami. But we’ve tried that before, too.
    ———————————————————
The fix would be to abandon RPO and dumb it down. Let them not have to think much as was said last night by someone.
Bryan brought up a good point. The OL always starts off in run block mode every play in RPO. One – they can’t attack the opposing D for fear of being down field to far. Two – Starting out run blocking, if the first read isn’t there, the OL is already out of position when the play has to be extended.

  9. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Here are some interesting stat splits for Myles Gaskin. Granted they need more context and investigation, but there are some things that are just odd.
    https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/splits/_/id/3886818/myles-gaskin

when we have a lead he averages 2.2 ypc
when we are tied or playing from behind he avgs over 4 ypc

1st down runs avgs 2.9 pc carry
2nd down and higher he avgs. over 4 yards again

For some reason his ypc is terrible once we cross into the opponents territory
When we are on our own 21-50 he avgs over 4 ypc. Once we cross that threshold he’s at below 3 yards again. Part of that is the redzone space gets tighter, but it’s still at 2.8ypc between the opponents 50-21

  10. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

    Mike,
I’d rather have Tua for the long run than some meaningless game where he might not be fully healed.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The Ravens defense doesn’t scare anyone anymore. He’s the man SB, if he’s healthy enough and can throw well enough he has to be out there. I think he gives the team a better shot to win so therefore if his finger isn’t swelling, he has to play.

      • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Healthy enough could mean a lot of things. I don’t really care about wins at this point in the season. Personally, I don’t think it’s worth hurting Tua in the long run.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

From the article and what several of us have been saying:
“Tua has not been healthy,” Riddick said. “When you look at Herbert’s situation, he had great mentors in the early part of his career … and then on top of it, a guy like Herbert has had great weapons in guys like [receivers] Mike Williams and Keenan Allen.

“Tua has had none of that. He hasn’t had the help, he hasn’t had the mentors, he hasn’t been in the same kind of offensive system that would lead to him having the kind of success that Justin Herbert has had. I just don’t know how you can make a true, definitive declaration as to what he is when you haven’t really set the table for him.”

It’s one of the reasons I thought we should have went with Anthony Lynn as our OC, and even though he’s not as innovative of a guy that I like, he’s at least somewhat competent. He’s shown he knows what it takes to set up a young QB for success.

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

SB – I don’t think Tua should be coddled either. What do we learn about him while he’s on the bench? I think we need to see as much of him as possible, even under duress to see if he’s the future if this team. He looks far from a lock at being our QB fir the next decade. Let him play!

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I didn’t say he should be coddled. I was literally the only person on this blog saying he shouldn’t have been pulled in important down situations after the first game. For me, this isn’t about learning about Tua. It’s about not mishandling an injury. I don’t want to see him play this game only to miss the next several because he was playing through something he didn’t need to, or worse damaging him for the long run like was done to RG3.
I’ve already seen enough of Tua to know what kind of QB he will be in this league. I think he’s in the same tier as Tannehill and he just needs to be the QB who keeps this team afloat until we find the guy who will be here for 10+ years. None of that matters because this team hasn’t been built to support good QB play anyway.

  17. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I think there is some confusion among some of you on what the RPO actually is and how it works.

Here is a good article to read to edumakate your selves.

    https://www.viqtorysports.com/understanding-rpo/

RPO passes are by design short passes by the way. It is up to the QB to read the LB or safety to determine whether to hand the ball off or pull it back and throw the the opened WR when the LB / safety bites on the run.

  18. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The point being the RPO doesn’t fail because the D knows what is coming. It is the exact opposite. The RPO starts off every play as a run play and puts the pressure on the D to make the choice to defend the run or the pass. RPO’s fail most often because the QB misreads the LB /Safety. Most often there is no “Deep” component to an RPO exactly because it is designed to take advantage of the LB / Safety being in the wrong position. The argument that it hurts the Oline because they can’t pass block after starting off run blocking is wrong. They are always run blocking on an RPO.

    *****
Yeah that stood out to me too

But it’s not just vision, it’s lack of acceleration
This is why we need to draft a RB before the 7th round
Those physical qualities that higher picks have, especially at the RB position can make a a big difference

I like gaskin, but for me he’s a guy in your stable you use to give another RB a rest

I think they really made a huge mistake he last 2 years by passing on a lot of good RBs with a lot of pucks available

  20. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

(so, yes, ORob, the RPO fails often in Miami because Tua makes the wrong read)

  21. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I don’t think Tua makes the wrong read mr rockphin, i think the opposing D C’s know he has a weak arm and therefore they crowd the LOS, he would have to throw the ball outside the numbers or deep consistently to change their mindset and so far that hasn’t happened.
they crowd the LOS and that’s why we suck at running

  22. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I have not yet seen anything saying Brissett is starting tonight. Is there any further confirmation of that?

  23. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I did see him throw one to waddle outside the numbers and i was very impressed with waddles route running capabilities. he started up the middle turned his head to the inside that prompted the db to turn his head as well at tua, at the sametime waddle was turning his head to the inside he turned his route out, he was outside the numbers and tua floated it to him for a good gain, never would’ve happened without waddles great route running.
