Other than high pointing catches, I think Gesicki is nothing special. He’s too often gobbled up by little CBs and slow. I’ll take the money to pay the other 2 TEs instead of 1.

    Again….unpopular opinion. 🙂

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What he does is garner attention, and offers a big target at crucial times, when you need a special player

Game on the line 4th and 15 from our own 5, everyone is covered, what does Tua do?

How would Waddle’s game on Sunday have gone, if Gesicki wasn’t on the field and he was doubled and tripled all game?

You need players that put fear in a D, and they don’t need stats to be effective

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We need to stop taking 1 step back in hope we can take 2 steps forward by the EOS

The salary cap will be huge in 2023, we don’t need to get rid of Gesicki to save cap space

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I don’t think he is doubled and tripled all game. If the team had a #1 WR or a #2 WR would be same thing. Lol

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Didn’t say he was doubled or tripled suggested he might have been, if Gesicki wasn’t on the field

  3. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

3 — That’s how many teams in NFL history have started 1-7 and then gotten to 6-7, a club the Dolphins will try to join this week. The 2004 Carolina Panthers 7-9, 1987 Los Angeles Rams 6-9 (not sure about week 3) and 1974 New York Jets (who got to 7-7 in what was then a 14-game season) also pulled off the feat.

  4. boulderfinfan's avatar boulderfinfan says:

Another great win for our phins. They haven’t lost since I got back lol. Keep it up!

  5. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

The way to stop Gesicki is to put a physical CB on him and jamm the shit out of him at the LOS.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

However you choose to defend him its in the gameplan, so you either you use top resources or he’s going to be a problem, either way we win

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If you do that, it should open the rest of our offense up

The thing about a mismatch like Gesicki is once he’s demanding special attention, he’s already won the mismatch. A DB like that on him, is going to take a DB off another WR

Now if we can get our full compliment of receivers in the field – it’s more likely to be effective, but that’s not Gesickis fault

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

he’s playing the slot rec, it’s not like they need additional help, any other slot rec would be covered by a db as well.
he had 3 catches for 17 yards against the Panthers.

      the word is out!

  7. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Guys, to chime in on the safety / non-safety discussion above. The ball was OUTSIDE the endzone when contact occurred and he was driven back to the goal line. it was NOT a safety. If he had been behind the goal line and been coming out when contact occurred it would have been a safety. But because he was tackled back to the line it is not a safety. The example of the Wake safety was different. in that case the QB was coming FROM the endzone out. In this case he was out of the endzone and tacked back to it.

You cannot drive a QB Backward into the endzone for a safety.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m pretty sure everyone here understands that the ball is spotted where contact is first made just like any other play. We said it was close, then discussed what actually constituted a safety which was whether the ball has to be entirely in the endzone or just a part of it.

  8. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

one way to beat that would be to put gesicki in motion, but still we have to go above and beyond due to his lack of physicality.

  9. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

last 3 games he had 8 catches for 63 yards

    Dolphins safety on Dalton

“The key is the position of the ball in relation to the goal line when Dalton is first contacted by Wake,” Blandino said. “We had a great look at it – a look right down the goal line. When Wake first makes contact with Dalton, the ball is breaking the plane of the goal line. If any part of that ball is breaking the plane when the contact occurs, and he is driven back into the end zone, it’s a safety. That was the ruling. It was reviewed in replay and confirmed. The entire ball has to be out of the end zone when the contact occurs for it not to be a safety.”

as for the Cam wake safety, i don’t think you can say the ball is entirely out of the endzone at first contact. any part of the ball touching the goal line would deem a safety.

Regarding Howard INTs, it does seem to be lazy reporting all around.

The PBP also reported on Howard reaching 25 INTs, and they say he did it fastest in league history. I’m assuming that is since the merger since Krause did it faster starting in 1964, but again, they don’t mention that. I still don’t know why the other publication mentioned 1990, lol.

“What if we told you that no player in NFL history has recorded 25 career interceptions faster? Howard has done it in 67 games. Again — that’s no player in NFL history.”

This may have already been posted, but I figured I’d post it again rather than scroll back and look. I know it’s been talked about on the board already, but Lindsay was a difference maker.

Here are all his runs and the huge assist block (and maybe slight hold) that gave Tua time to hit Waddle on the big play. And not a single negative run.

  20. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

We open as 3 point favorites against the Giants. I’m surprised it’s not a bit higher than that. I know our offense is the concern- and can we put up enough points, but our defense should absolutely feast on Daniel Jones.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They also didn’t play a lot of dink and dunk passing game. They ran the ball much more. DBs were also allowed more contact and pass rushers could knock the snot out of QBs.

Ken, how do you feel about the Giants/Dolphins matchup?

Dolphins first always but always will have a place in my heart for the Giants

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I meant for the game. Which team would you pick to win and why?

I think our defense if they keep playing like they have been will dominate the game. They both have poor O-lines but our defense is deeper than the Giants.

On offense Tua is our QB and they don’t have theirs. Both teams have banged up skill players.

        I say Phins 23-13.

  36. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Just looked up Mike Glennon’s career stats… what a shame, being he looked so very promising coming out of NCST. He always had an over-exaggerated delivery, but I thought it could be fixed: NOPE.

I think we’re going to FEAST on Glennon this Sunday, y’all.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

One of my good friends at work is a G-Men fan (we traded barbs today before cutting it up), and he realizes their O-Line is frail.

Jaelen Phillips has a great opportunity this Sunday. If he plays his cards right, he may have another “day”. And if so, we may be talking about DROY for him.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And if Jevon Holland has another “day”, it might come down to him and Phillips vying for DROY. But of course, Micah Parsons (Cowboys) is in the mix as well.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Our entire defense is playing at a high level. They all seem to be getting the scheme. There is talent and depth at every level of the defense.

  40. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, Micah Parsons is exactly what we thought he was. The Dolphins chose Waddle and that’s good too. Phillips is going to be a monster. Holland already reminds me of the savvy Deron Cherry back in the day. A true FS who can move around and produce in many roles. So far all three 1st round picks are living up to expectations. That’s huge. They’re all a part of winning 4 in a row. 🙂

According to Pro Reference he has a rating of 94.1 making him 18th in the league, he’s also 28th in passing yards gained.
for us to be a contender he has to be top 10 in passer rating as 90percent of playoff teams have a QB with those skills.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

It’s for this month Rob. But good job being predictable and saying something negative about Tua when someone posts something positive, as usual. You’re nothing if not consistent!

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

why is that negative? it’s the truth.

you’re criteria in your stats are painting a picture to support an agenda, Tua had a great month against sub par teams. that doesn’t make him a great qb.

i really hope he pans out but i’d rather look at the reality instead of partial stats, and i missed the part where you said it was only a month.

  50. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

and i’ll give him credit, he’s 18th in passer rating which IMO is astonishing! that means he’s better than 14 other starting qbs in this league. and that’s damn good considering the whole package.

…………….but wake me up when he gets in the top 10 will ya?

  51. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Guess who’s NOT in the top 10? Justin Herbert, who many here believe is significantly better than Tua. As of the moment, he sits only 3 spots higher at #15 (96.5 QBR) to Tua’s (94.5).

  52. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

To say he played bad teams this month is also so fucking weak sauce. We beat the Ravens and the Panthers, the Panthers were hot and had the best pass defense in the NFL before we beat them. Hard to be fair when you so desperately don’t want to. I get it . . .

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Great win vs ravens. But i doubt tua led us to that victory. Last i checked the defense won that game. The panthers suck. Along with their losing record and no qb. Lets not forget the texans and the jets.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Dont forget STs and defense scored the first two tds in the panthers game.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

We’re talking about the last 4 game win streak. That’s the subject. Saying Tua is great because he was involved in the Panthers win is misleading. The panthers are not a good team. And tua had the luxury of 14pts.

That will be the true test.

  57. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Also mike. Brissett lead us to the victory against the Ravens. Tua didn’t even start that game. He was handed that victory by our D & Brissett

  58. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

    Orob,
Nevermind, I saw where you got your stats. If you sort passer rating, Tua does indeed come up 18th, but it includes anyone who’s thrown passes so at the top of the list are D. Henry the running back and Austin Pettis the WR. Then there’s Joe Flacco who’s not a starter and has only played two games. So if you exclude the non-QB’s he’s listed at 16th, but even that is misleading because he’s tied with Patrick Mahomes and there’s such little delta difference the other guys that even saying he’s 15th shows a complete misunderstanding of how numbers work.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I see what ESPN did. They had the top three listed then started the count again once QB’s with higher attempts. It still doesn’t change the fact that you’re misrepresenting the rankings based on an outdated formula for QB efficiency.

who knows he may be all that!
his arm is weak, any good team will crowd the box and shut our offense down as he doesn’t threaten them with a deep ball.
the last three games will be very telling. I’m sure others will point to everyone accept Tua’s weak ass arm.

      • ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

Taint the strongest, taint the weakest, but it is mighty accurate. He’ll do for me and it’s plenty good enough. Arm strength is not the B all and end all for being a good QB. And his height deficiency didn’t prevent him from seeing over his OL and the Panthers DL
and going 26 of 31 whilst Superman Cam at 6′ 5″ seemed to do nothing but fire passes at our D Linemen’s hands.

As for your “lunker lure – you catch one bass after another, they cant resist it. they slam the top of the water hitting it” …………. with respect, this fish isn’t biting! 😉 We’ll just agree to disagree.

  69. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

as for being 28th in yards, we can give him a pass on that due to his injury and not playing all the games, still his avg yards per game at 219 is putrid!

  70. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

shit, if he was ranked 9th in rating i would be dancing in the streets!

  71. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

ESPN does a QBR rating, the real rating is passer rating and that’s what i go by.

  72. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tua has been in a zone the last few weeks, not sure with his style it really matters what D he’s going against

When you get rid of the ball quick, and are deadly accurate you can do it against anyone, add in pocket pressence, then if his D reading skills improve watchout

He has one thing to prove to me, can he beat Buffalo?

If he can, we can forget about any negative like arm strength, and give him the title of franchise QB

Wish we played the Bills again this year

  73. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

QBs with blowout wins, especially in games where the D and/or STs score, tend to have less passing yards

When you get a score from non-offense, the O has 1 less possession

In a blowout you get more running attempts and conservative play calling

  74. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Think people still have a bad taste in their mouth from Glennon kicking our ass on a Monday Night game years ago, but like Flacco kicking our ass, that was a long time ago and not relevant now

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Sure would be nice to have him, but I wouldn’t rush him back, especially how we’ve been playing and next week being the bye

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

If healthy he really gives us another weapon. Also no reason not to rush him back. We have no margin for error for remainder of season so all hands on deck

  75. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’d really like to see how Parker fits in with the new Tua

Will he be the main focus?

Will he be 1b or 1c to Gesicki?

  76. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The rest of the season seems to have no unwinnable games

Tenn will be tough on the road and the cheats game may be a brutal dogfight, but we Caan win both, if we continue to play as we’ve done the last 4

  77. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

With a winning streak going it may be a good thing we’re playing the jets off of the bye

Players sometimes have a letdown after winning several in a row, then having a bye

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The last four teams we played are so stupid. They should have just stacked the box. They would have definitely won then! Those DC’s are so dumb! It’s so simple!

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I know you’re JBB, but it should’ve been Cover zero all day

You have to make Tua beat you deep, but no one seems to have been able to stop Brady’s short passing game

Sure Brady could throw it deep, but the short game was so dynamic, you’d still be better off giving up 2 long tds a game, instead of being short gamed to death

  78. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Wouldn’t mind seeing both Parker and Fuller back for the last 3 games

Might actually have an O, despite the OL

  79. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The thing about QBR is that it is a proprietary formula (secret) and it is “weighted” which seems to bring in arbitrary opinion based factors. Passer Rating is a relatively simple calculation, but it does not isolate the QB’s performance.

The same exact performance by the QB can produce a 153.8 rating or a 0.0 rating.

    1. QB drops back, ducks a free blitzer, scrambles for open space, spins out of another tackle and hucks the ball 60 yards hits the WR in stride right exactly in the hands, the WR catches it and runs for 10 yards to score a TD. 153.8 rating

EXACT SAME PLAY — Ball bounces off WR stone hands. – 0.0 passer rating.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

he four separate calculations can be expressed in the following equations:

      {\displaystyle a=\left({{\text{COMP}} \over {\text{ATT}}}-.3\right)\times 5}a=\left({{\text{COMP}} \over {\text{ATT}}}-.3\right)\times 5

      {\displaystyle b=\left({{\text{YDS}} \over {\text{ATT}}}-3\right)\times 0.25}{\displaystyle b=\left({{\text{YDS}} \over {\text{ATT}}}-3\right)\times 0.25}

      {\displaystyle c=\left({{\text{TD}} \over {\text{ATT}}}\right)\times 20}c=\left({{\text{TD}} \over {\text{ATT}}}\right)\times 20

      {\displaystyle d=2.375-\left({{\text{INT}} \over {\text{ATT}}}\times 25\right)}d=2.375-\left({{\text{INT}} \over {\text{ATT}}}\times 25\right)

      where

ATT = Number of passing attempts
      COMP = Number of completions
      YDS = Passing yards
      TD = Touchdown passes
      INT = Interceptions
If the result of any calculation is greater than 2.375, it is set to 2.375. If the result is a negative number, it is set to zero.

Then, the above calculations are used to complete the passer rating:

      {\displaystyle {\text{Passer Rating}}=\left({a+b+c+d \over 6}\right)\times 100}{\text{Passer Rating}}=\left({a+b+c+d \over 6}\right)\times 100

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s why they call it a team game

Law of averages does play a part in the example you gave though, and a QB that throws a nice tight spiral and a very catchable ball is likely going to have less drops

  80. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Most of the commentary I have heard on QBR vs passer rating is that passer rating is just a mechanical application while QBR does account for actual play. Passer rating is the official stat used by the NFL because as Rock points out QBR is proprietary to ESPN

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

QBR accounts for a QB that runs with the ball, hence QB rating vs passer rating

Comparing Brady vs Lamar, Brady is always going to have a better passer rating, but might not always have a better QBR

Which one is better? Depends what you’re trying to accomplish

Why hasn’t Lamar won an SB with that crazy good D? He’s not a great passer

How you weigh a running QB vs a passing only QB is where the magic comes in

To less of an extreme, Josh Allen vs Brady, Josh maybe be a better QB, because he can do more things and is still a good passer

Allen vs Brady I think QBR is a more important stat, but not with Brady vs Lamar

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

It’s not just running with ball that is incorporated but is accounted for in QBR but QBR also takes into account such things as performance in down and distance situations. It is far more than just incorporating running stats

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yeah, and what they did when they came up with the QBR formula is bounced it off of reality, meaning do the guys that have a high QBR are they good QBs?

Then tweaked it to give the meaning they wanted to attain

  81. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

In general though, when a QB has a great performance it’s reflected in the passer rating and QBR, and vice versa for a shitty one, so we’re just splitting hairs

ORob says, when you look at the passer rating you’re going to see mostly playoff teams in the top 10, not so much for QBR

  82. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    QB #1 1st 16 games – 320 / 526 – 60.8% – 3,284 yds – 17 TD’s – 16 Ints – 76.9 Rtg
    QB#2 1st 16 games – 351 / 524 – 67% – 3,515 yds – 21 TD’s – 11 Ints – 90.5 Rtg

    Who is the better QB

HAH! It is a trick question! It’s too early to determine with only 16 games played.

    (PS Drew Brees is QB#1)

  84. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Passer rating is constant, QBR is subjective and has variables, it’s media driven, ESPN does not share their formula. the nfl uses passer rating, and so should we, even though it goes against Ken’s agenda.

Tua is 18th in the league in passer rating which is below avg,
    i don’t think we’ve had a top 10 qb since marino.
tannehill was close, i think at one point he got to 12.

who’s who of qbs are mostly in the top 10, you can find most playoff teams in that category.

i left qbr in my toilet this morning

  85. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

QBR (QB Rating) is so skewed and oftentimes laughable… it doesn’t even pass the sniff test, to be honest. It’s a generic rating invented by a television network that vastly overrates some players and vastly underrates other players: it literally compares apples to oranges.

Passer rating is the gold standard and the only one of the two that really matters as it applies to a QB’s literal passing record.

Not literal, but a rough and extreme scenario: Michael Vick could have a 40% CMP, 0 TD passes, 3 INTs, and 100 passing yards. But he rushed for 75 yards on 5 carries for 4 TDs. His QBR is likely going to be better than Tua’s, who passed for 65% CMP, 2 TD passes, 0 INTs, and 250 passing yards with 0 rushing yards and 0 rushing TDs.

Now, who was the better passer in the above scenario? Sure as hell wasn’t Vick, but he’d likely have the higher QB Rating. Next game up, Vick has to play the #1 run-D in the NFL, and they will shut him down if he tries to run wild. But, but, but Vick has the higher QB Rating! He’s a better QB than Tua! Funny because Tua carved them up the week prior with a 70% CMP, 4 TDs through the air, and 300 yards passing.

See what I mean? QBR is a VERY skewed stat. I go by passer rating only, and I’m smart enough to look at a QB’s running ability outside of the scope of passing ability.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You said who is the better passer, obviously by those stats Tua, but that isn’t what QBR is trying to determine as the passer rating is

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

You and I realize this, but I’ve seen many here confused between the two, and the casual fan truly has no idea between the two. Some folks even think the two are the same thing.

  86. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

If Tua is #18 in passer rating through 16 career games — and behind this dreadful O-Line, playing through broken ribs, broken finger, and coming off a career-threatening hip injury with no camp in ’20 (COVID) — he’s WINNING!

He’s only going to get better and better. I have 100% faith in Tua.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Oh, and don’t let me forget to mention the CONSTANT injuries we’ve had at the WR position, plus they lead the league in drops.

  87. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I like this episode. ORob, I hope you watch this in order to see how awful our O-Line really is (and they had one of their best outings this past Sunday, but still sucked), and how well Tua has been progressing DESPITE this woeful O-Line.

Why did PFF grade Eichenberg so well in this game?

Watching this you would’ve thought we were the team with 10 pts.

Smoke and mirrors, and some nifty quick releases by Tua

With Tua finally getting it done, even the RPO is showing some effectiveness

All these ratings give you an idea where the players rank. But there is also the eye test and you can see good and bad QB play.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The eye test is huge for OL, because if the QB gets rid of the ball quick enough, even though any particular OLman is getting beat, he doesn’t give up a sack or pressure

QB could also be getting rid of it quick, because some OLman can’t hold a block for more than 2 seconds

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s true but that also usually equals minimal gain or a possible incomplete. That’s when you see it and say we have no time to get the ball off for bigger gains. The stats are not always because of the QB’s performance. Sometimes a defense just overtakes an offense and they can’t move the ball and score.
