Game 14 – Jets @ Dolphins

Divisional rival game. Throw out the team records, throw out the last meeting between these two teams and also, throw away all the momentum of the 5 game winning streak. All that is in the past. What remains in front of the Miami Dolphins is a team that knows them backwards and forwards, there are no surprises, no secrets. Unfortunately for the Miami Dolphins, the one thing that the win streak afforded them was consistency. That went out the window when the entire Dolphins RB room tested positive for COVID. More unfortunately, it wasn’t just the RB room. We have potentially lost our star WR Jaylen Waddle as well as our star S Jevon Holland. Both of these players are huge part of what we do on offense and defense respectively. The pass game went through Waddle and the versatility and effectiveness of Jevon Holland doing everything from blitzing, to coverage, to playing near the LOS as a LB has been so valuable to the Dolphins. There is potentially good news as S Brandon Jones is questionable to return from ankle and elbow injuries Sunday. He’s logged 2 limited practices so it’s possible he can suit up. Jones isn’t Holland, but if I had to pick one of our safeties to replace Holland, it would be Jones.

Back to the consistency thing. We need Deiter in there at C and we need him to play well. We’ve had 3 different centers this season though I believe we’ve seen the last of C Austin Reiter who was waived this week. Greg Mancz who we picked up from the Ravens is IR/DFR which means he’s off the IR and designated for return. He’ll likely be the backup this week to Deiter who is wearing a precautionary walking boot. I’m really hoping Myles Gaskin can play. We know his limitations, as do the Jets, but he gives the offense some consistency which is much needed this week. If Waddle is OUT, and it sure looks that’ll be the case, DeVante Parker who is being rested this week and not practicing will hopefully be wearing his Superman costume under his uniform. The WR corps will be Parker, Wilson, Hollins, Ford and Williams. I would imagine TE Mike Gesicki would be in line for a heavy dose of targets this week although it’s difficult to say that with certainty since his targets have been anything but consistent.

Our defense will have to set the tone, and they have been doing that during the duration of this five game win streak. There won’t be the statue-like Joe Flacco at QB this week, it will be the much more mobile, much less experienced rookie QB Zach Wilson. To be fair, Flacco carved up our defense pretty well but ultimately it was his lack of escapability that did him in. Zach Wilson can move, but pressure will cause errors in judgement and poor throws. We need Emmanuel Ogbah, Jaelan Phillips, Andrew Van Ginkel to keep up their relentless pass rush. All of these guys have been killing it the last few games. If S Jevon Holland is OUT, hopefully Brandon Jones can step in and get the job done.

The Jets will likely get a boost for their run game as rookie RB Michael Carter will be coming off IR this week. Carter has played well this season and has been a definite bright spot in their offense. Bad news for the Jets is WR Elijah Moore is on IR and will not be able to play Sunday. He’s been the bright spot in their passing game which now features Denzel Mims who is desperately trying, along with the Jets to get going. The Jets will rely a lot on Jamison Crowder, Keelan Cole and Braxton Berrios. Tevin Coleman and Ty Johnson have been splitting RB duties but if Michael Carter is able to play, he’s the one to watch out for.

I don’t care what this game looks like on paper. Yes, the Jets are 32nd in points allowed with 397 (30.5 PPG). They are 29th in points scored with 226 (17.4 PPG). The Dolphins have made significant gains in both categories during the 5 game win streak. The Dolphins are now 25th in points scored with 254 (19.5 PPG) and really moved up defensively to 13th with 288 (22.2 PPG). When 2 teams know each other so well, anything can happen, especially after having the win streak snapped by the interruption of the BYE week. What could have been a week to improve our roster by getting healthy has turned out be a disaster with COVID infecting too many important players. It will take a lot for Brian Flores and his staff to stay focused and find a way to overcome the obstacles that have presented themselves this week. Hopefully Flores has this team’s attention and they understand the importance of winning E-V-E-R-Y * S-I-N-G-L-E * G-A-M-E. There are no week’s off, this team must win the rest of their games or the season is done. Jets Head Coach Robert Saleh would love nothing more to end this streak and have the Dolphins join them as another team from the AFC East OUT of the playoffs. This game could be a nail biter, so fasten your seatbelts!!

PS – Some good news most recently from the Stanger camp. Jon has improved since my last update. Things are looking up so all of you BLOG Cardiac Surgeons can rest easy and don’t worry yourselves about transplants and the like. Hopes and prayers to Jon that he continues to improve and get out of the hospital able to resume a normal life.

This game tonight reminds me off the 2nd half of a Monday Night game against the cheats about 4 years ago, neither team could move the ball

It was a game Drake ran wild in first half

Watching the game tonight and our matchup with the Saints next Monday Night, this is how I view it.

On offense we’re going to have a tough time with their front 7. So I keep it simple/vanilla and run our bread and butter plays. No fancy shit that can go really bad. Then maybe set a few of them up when we have them honed in.

On defense it’s the same game plan against Jackson and the Ravens. Except Hill is more like Tebow – not as fast but a thicker more physical runner and a questionable passer.

I see Baker on Kamara a lot with a Safety here and there. I do not fear their offense much even though Kamara can make some special plays.

Special Teams could play a major role in this game.

Looks like a FG game to me in a low scoring game.

I think my favorite part about yesterday’s win was that Jets fans were able to cheer for their team the entire time until they couldn’t. We gave them hope and then took it away at the last moment.

    • they are rarely hopeful, more like disgustingly cocky and bellicose ignorant

they can kick a FG when down 31-3 with 2 minutes to go, and start talking major trash, they never shut up even when the team sucks and is several scores behind

jets fans visiting Miami are the least classy in the NFL

  17. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

“Cheering Guide” for today and next Sunday …. with all the divisional games the next 3 weeks it gets tricky … BUT

Based on 10-7 Dolphins (9 game win streak!) today we are actually helped with

    Today:
    1. Raiders over Browns … Browns lose and they have no way of passing a 10-7 Dolphins. Raiders would only need to lose 1 of last 3 games to also be out against 10-7 Dolphins.

    Thursday:
    2. 49ers over Titans … Titans out vs 10-7 Fins IF Indy wins out vs Cards, Raiders, Jags.

    Sunday’s Games:
    3. Bengals over Ravens … Ravens out vs 10-7 Fins
    4. Chiefs over Steelers … Steelers out vs 10-7 Fins
    5. Broncos over Raiders … Raiders out vs 10-7 Fins
    6. Packers over Browns … IF Clev beats Raiders we need Browns to lose to Steelers or Bengals
    7. Bills over Patriots … Patriots out vs 10-7 Fins. Pats win narrows our path dramatically.

All of the Sunday games are within a good betting chance.
The next two weeks we are huge Bronco fans as well since they can’t catch a 10-7 Fins team and they play Raiders and Chargers.

For sure though, since we play Monday, on Sunday we are all HUGE Bills and 49ers fans because Pats and Titans wins closes our window quickly. Titans win means they’d have to lose to Texans in week 18. Indy would have to lose 2 of 3 (Cards, Raiders, Jags)

49ers vs Titans up first with Colts/Cards on Saturday will tell us how to cheer (for or against Colts). Indy needs to win out and have Titans lose 2 (in this case, to 49ers and Dolphins). In terms of ‘odds’ this seems like the most likely scenario.

What remains is the Chargers… it might be too much to ask for and the threads to the 7 games listed don’t exist. In order for Fins to pass them on tie-breaks, they need to lose 2 of 3 to Texans, Broncos, Raiders.

So, IF we get the above 7 games … the Dolphins enter Monday night 90% IN CONTROL of their own destiny (with Indy the only team that could fuck it up by NOT winning out).
So in addition to being Fin fans, we’d also be Bronco and Indy fans the rest of the way. 🙂

    Hope this helps.

  18. the simpler way into the playoffs is

miami wins the next 2 and if the cheats lose against the bills, then the winner of the Dolphins / cheats game is IN the playoffs

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

If Buff then beats Falcons and Jets, and we beat Pats, Bills win division but it doesn’t mean we get a WC spot. There are teams that we lose out on tie breaks (Raiders, Colts, Bengals, ….)
hell, there are 4 to 5 teams that finish ahead of us if they win out.

In order for us to be IN with your scenario is for us to win the division. Since we lost 2x to Bills it requires them losing to Falcons or Jets. yikes.

Because of injuries and covid lots of new faces yesterday, I’d think Tua’s timing should be a little off, but instead of the article saying something to that effect its all about the negative

How many pick 6s has Brady thrown, since he threw one the last game of 2019, and again the next week in the playoffs?

Read another article about our D giving up 24 pts, even though 2 ints with no offensive yards produced 10 pts for jets, not bad with Holland out only really giving up 14

    Steve,

I also don’t understand our coaching staff. and FO. Personally, I don’t give a shit if Wilkins celebrates as long as he produces. That should be at the bottom of Flores cares right now. I’m sure it is but it didn’t even deserve mention in the weekly chat much less several mentions. He’s given Fuller wide latitude to be a complete waste of space the entire year.

9’ers friends I know say that Shannahan is very tough on rookies. He has bias towards vets. I wonder if Flores is too biased towards some players. Fuller is garbage. Wilson has been terrible the whole time. Hurns and Little were wastes.

For me, availability is everything and I would have dumped all the previously mentioned players before this year even started. And I would have been right to do so. Flores kept these turds too long and needs to focus on results…from the dudes who actually show up every week.

  36. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I don’t know what to say about Fuller. I know it’s a broken finger and lots of players play with it. But he is a WR and that could impact his ability to catch. The problem is that he has been injury prone his whole career and he has done nothing to shake that label

Regardless and needless to say, he’s been a total waste of $10M.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Bottom line is we just don’t know with him and we are all speculating. If he has had a clean injury history we would probably think nothing of it but because this is a yearly occurrence you start thinking there is something wrong with him in general

    from nfl.com

Miami looks like more of a pretender than contender. Credit the Dolphins for rallying from two double-digit deficits against a divisional opponent. Those games can be extra-competitive, even when they involve terrible teams (see: the 2021 Jets). Miami’s sixth consecutive win places it firmly inside the playoff bubble. But winning so ugly at home while coming off a bye and against a 3-11 team conjures doubt more than confidence. The truth is the Dolphins have been feasting on losing teams and their offense is still a liability. This was only the second time all season that Miami allowed 17 points and won, with the other victory also coming against New York. Tua Tagovailoa hurt his team more than he helped it Sunday, throwing a pair of interceptions (including a pick-six that tied the game midway through the fourth) and narrowly avoiding a couple more. Throwing downfield is barely an option (Tagovailoa went 4 of 11 for 85 yards with an INT on passes of 10-plus air yards, per Next Gen Stats). The Dolphins’ remaining slate (Saints, Titans, Patriots) suggests their streak could continue, but how they’re winning doesn’t appear sustainable.

Next Gen stat of the game: Tua Tagovailoa went 12 of 15 for 111 yards, 2 TDs and an INT on passes of fewer than 10 air yards.

NFL Research: Duke Johnson recorded 100+ rushing yards for the first time in his career.

It’s understandable that we aren’t getting a lot of respect yet. We’ve had a bunch of home games and beat a bunch of bad teams along with one good team in this run.

Beat the Saints in Nawlins, and it’ll be because their offense/ QB situation is a mess.
Beat the Titans in Tennessee and it’ll be because they don’t have Henry.
Beat the Pets in Miami to complete a playoff run nobody thought would happen and we’ll straight up take what so few are willing to give us.

I asked him “Did you have to give much thought to giving up smoking?” “Hell NO!” was his immediate response. He had smoked continuously from the age of 14 until he was well into his 60’s. Said he smoked 3 packs a day during WW2, and I believed him. I was intrigued by the tests and X-Rays that immediately detected Dad’s cancer. Said to myself, “Maybbe I should check intobeing a radiological Technologist. A few years later, I had my R.T. and was working tons of hours as an X-Ray tech. Then along came the CT scanner, and, after about a year of that I was named chief CT Scan Tech at a facility in Palm Beach County. But the coin business kept calling me and, in 1989, I left the medical field for the the wild and crazy world of being a rare coin authenticator. I will soon be 76, and I STILL work 40-50 hours a week at my unusual profession.
SO-o-o, no smoking, a very challenging job, and a wonderful wife have kept me going full speed ahead. Bouts with cancer, hearing loss, the Covid virus, etc., etc., have barely slowed me down. I am probably in better shape right now than at any time in my last 25+ years. I walk my dogs 20+ miles a week, or, should I say “They walk ME 20 miles a week?”

GOOD DECISIONS in your private life can pay almost immediate positive results. I enjoyed being an X-Ray tech in military and civilian life. My time as a chief CT Scan tech was intellectually challenging and, sometimes, physically challenging, too. I’m sure, though, that nothing I’ve done can challenge what Young Stanger has achieved in the legal field. He’s NOT one to brag but, I’ll tell you, thousands of people (some disadvantaged) have benefitted greatly from the laws he has helped to develop. He’s truly an awesome guy.

WE’RE ALL PULLING FOR YOU, Jon! There is so much more you can do in your life. And there are many thousand more individuals you CAN and WILL help in the future!!

In general we want the team with the better record to lose, exceptions are KC and Buff, someone has to win the division better a team like KC wins out and beats the division foes, with Buffalo, if we’re tied with them we’re out, so best they just win division

We really have to give kudos to our team with them dealing with the 1-7 start and then winning 6 in a row for us to even have these discussions. It shows a lot about the character and talent on the team. It would have been really easy for all of them to call it a day. Competitors don’t do that.

I am just trying to enjoy the ride and manage my expectations at the same time. I am finding myself getting a little bit more intense with each game.
