Game 15 – Dolphins @ Saints

It’s that time of year folks, the time of the NFL football season where you start doing mad calculations as to what your team’s playoff chances are. Think about it, really think about it. It’s crazy that we’re even in position to be thinking about such things. This season was going the way of blowing it up, and that means GM, Coach and starting all over again at 1-7. When you consider that this was the feeling here and now that an unlikely 6 game win streak which included some “gimmes” but also included a game I figured we had no business winning against the 6-2 Baltimore Ravens. That was a game I expected to be thrashed as per usghe, especially considering the the Ravens had pulverized our Dolphins in the last 4 meetings to the tune of 137-16. Yes, we beat the Jets twice, the Watsonless Texans, the Panthers who were flying high because their “Superman” Cam Newton was back at QB, and the other NY Football team, the Daniel Jonesless Giants. Whatever the level of competition you play in the NFL, it’s remarkable to run off 6 straight wins. So now our Dolphins sit at 7-7 and enable us to banter back and forth and argue about which teams we should root for in which matchups. Gotta love it!

We travel to play the New Orleans Saints, led by one of the better NFL Head Coaches around, Sean Payton. He’s hamstrung somewhat because he has to rely on a guy that he used to draw up a number of offensive packages for and pull then QB Drew Brees and let the gadget guy Taysom Hill go out and use his athletic ability, a nice change of pace from the heavy passing offense of Drew Brees. However, COVID-19 has struck the Saints and both starter Taysom Hill and backup Trevor Siemian are both out with COVID so they will be forced to start rookie QB Ian Book. Ian Book was the Saints 4th RD Pick (#133) this year. When you face this current Saints team, you no longer worry about WR Michael Thomas, it’s basically the Alvin Kamara show. For perspective, Kamara leads the team in rush attempts (184), receptions (38) and total yards with 1016, 668 yards rushing, 348 yards receiving. He’s basically their offense, and if you can limit Kamara, you’re probably going to beat the Saints. The Saints are also 7-7, but unlike the surging Dolphins, the Saints were 5-2 and now have lost 5 of 7. The Saints have one of the better NFL defensive units, currently 6th in points allowed at 20.4 PPG. The Dolphins slipped a bit and are now worse than midpack at 22.3 PPG. Offensively, the Saints are 17th (22.4 PPG) and the Dolphins are 21st at (20.4 PPG). With QB Ian Book in, you really are playing against The Kamaras this week.

The Dolphins managed to slip past the Jets last week and although we didn’t look great doing so, we did enough to win, and that’s what it’s all about now. Just win baby. I know some of you people are all on board “The Duke Train” but I’m of the opinion that he had a really nice day in front of a crowd he was eager to be in front of and seized the opportunity. Does he end up being another Lamar Smith type story, we’ll find out. For the record, I hope Duke is even better than Lamar Smith, but I’m not expecting as much as others from The Duke. I do like the physical style and effort he brings so maybe that rubs off on the other guys. Tua had an uneven game against the Jets, we’ll need a better effort from him. The good thing is the O-line play is trending upwards, a great sign. They have quite the challenge in the Saints front 7, Cam Jordan is one of the best DE’s in football. Marcus Davenport excels as well and benefits from the extra attention teams usually slide towards Jordan. Kwon Alexander is a fine LB along with former Jet Demario Davis. LB Kaden Ellis is on the COVID list so not sure if he plays. The Saints secondary isn’t too shabby either with CB’s Marcus Lattimore and Bradley Roby. SS Malcolm Jenkins is a wily veteran and is joined by FS Marcus Williams. The trio of Davis, Jenkins and Williams are the Saints leading tacklers.

As you are all aware, our friend Jon (Stanger) is still fighting the good fight. At times it looks like he’s turned a corner only to fall back a few steps. This is going to be a tough battle for him so please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. At this time, I want to wish all of you here Happy Holidays, and also hoping for all of you to stay safe and healthy.

Merry Christmas

The Bills winning and Chargers losing was massive for the Dolphins.

If Kansas City beats Pittsburgh and Miami beats New Orleans, the Dolphins will be the No. 7 seed in the AFC entering Week 17
    Marcel Louis-Jacques
Had some people saying the Raiders need to lose as well.

Based on the wild card tiebreakers, if LAC/LV/MIA/BAL had the same record entering Wk 16:

    – LAC would eliminate LV based on division record
    – BAL eliminated based on conf record
    – MIA eliminates LAC based on common games

    23-0 Chiefs!!! Keep on rolling.

  7. CavalierKong says:

We legitimately could get to #6 if we win out, especially if the raiders lose today, lol

  8. CavalierKong says:

    Denver’s up 13-7

It’s coming up all Dolphins today!!

  9. naplesfan2010 says:

Jeez … Burrow threw for 525.

LOL in the days of yore…

Thursday at lunch there was a little kid across the restaurant when i was getting lunch. He was telling a story in a very loud / excited 5 year old voice and the story started “A LONG TIME AGO WHEN I WAS FOUR YEARS OLD……..”

Everyone in the place got quiet at the same time and then busted out laughing. It was a classic moment.

Lol, damn wish I could watch that game.

    It’s a rout now!!
I changed it to the Denver / Raider game

  20. CavalierKong says:

Denver’s missed the fg. It was just a bit outside…

  21. Tim Knight says:

Taunting when down 30-0 is a special kind of dumb.

  22. Brian in NY says:

I’m getting destroyed in FF too. I had Burrow on my bench for Rodgers, but it would have mattered . Went up against AJ Brown, diggs and Andrews. Mahomes to boot. Game over .

    • Tim Knight says:

Yeah I only had one TD pass from Herbert with :38 seconds left. None of my other players scored. They had good yards but that’s not enough. I have Kamara and the Saints DEF still going tomorrow night but I had to start them. I don’t expect big points from either though.

  23. CavalierKong says:

Steelers on the board with a sad, wilting 3 points…

    Rashaad Penny is ROCKING today!

  25. Ken says:

  27. CavalierKong says:

    Broncos suuuuuck

  28. Krishna says:

Stay the course is taking on a new meaning! Just win baby!

  29. Ken says:

Fortunately we don’t need the Broncos today

  33. CavalierKong says:

It’s nice to know all we gave to do is win. Tuesday morning we’re sitting in a playoff spot.

  34. Mike E. says:

I had a tough week in FF last week. I was in 3rd place, quarterfinals playoffs. I played Gaskin at RB and that was my big mistake. It was a low scoring match, if I had played Devon Singletary I would have won. My stalwarts had an off week, Kyler Murray, Davante Adams, Stefon Diggs, and Kittle all scored lower than expected. It was a bummer.

  35. Krishna says:

    This is the intangible….

What do you say to the team for tomorrow night?

  36. Krishna says:

You’re all professionals, do your job?

  37. Brian in NY says:

Ian Book worries me a little. We haven’t had time to prepare for him, and when he was at ND he was pretty adept at running when there was no one open. Maybe it’s from years of being burned by nobody QBs and running QBs. Maybe a similar game plan that we had against the Ravens.

  38. Krishna says:

The coaches/coaching need to bring it!

  39. Mike E. says:

Brian – it us definitely a big source of stress, but now I can focus on the games and not the players

  40. wyoming85 says:

We’ve done well this year with Running QB’s by blitzing our DB’s.

I will be expecting lots of Jones, Holland sacks!!!!!!!

  41. mf13ss says:

I think it would be wise to firstly lull Ian Book into a false sense of security… meaning, not to use the 0-blitz off the bat.

  42. naplesfan2010 says:

wow the seahags blew their game wit da bears.

  43. Rockphin says:

LOL the play of the day came from a game that didn’t matter. Braxton Barios ran a kickoff back 103 yards in the loser bowl Jax vs Yets

  44. wyoming85 says:

  45. Rockphin says:

I’m hoping we can get to him with 4 on a consistent basis.

  46. wyoming85 says:

  47. Tim Knight says:

I’ll wait to see Ian Book play before getting nervous about him. He’s the one who should be nervous.

  48. CavalierKong says:

The deadline has passed for the saints QBs to clear covid protocols, right? It has to be book or bortles?

  49. Tim Knight says:

You’re a rookie backup/backup QB playing your first game against a defense playing really well with one of the best man coverage secondaries and a fierce blitz package. That’s not ideal. LOL

  50. The Flying Pig says:

I was honestly looking \ forward to Taysom Hill

But I am sorry, if you are worried about Ian Book who will be making his first nfl star against us, you are always going to be worried

Relax! It’s a great scenario for us.
Just play your game – blitz the shit out of him, and avoid our own turnovers

  51. dolphins control their own destiny,

    win, and iN

  52. olddolphan says:

NBC just reported on its Sunday Night Football pregame show that if Miami beats the Saints tomorrow night, they will leapfrog to the #7 (and final) seed in the AFC Playoffs!!

  53. Tim Knight says:

If our defense can’t stop the Saints offense with Book and/or Bortles at QB that’s going to be a very big disappointment. My biggest concern is our offense against their defense. They’re a good defense. It’s going to be a good test for our OL.

  67. steveccnv says:

These wannabe guys like Heinicki, that have to throw the last warmup pass midgame before getting on the field, like Brady does, remind me of basketball players, that wipe off their hands on the bottom of their shoes like Larry Bird used to

    • olddolphan says:

STEVE, You’re confused. Larry Bird wiped his hands off the bottom of his shoes BEFORE he stepped on the court. It was to wipe off the horse manure they got while working in local horse stables while in high school.

After Pats losing 2 in a row, she was probably afraid to ask a football question.

  69. bailbondmike says:

She was probably the gossip columnist for that news outlet filling in for the sports reporter who was still on Christmas vacation.

  70. CavalierKong says:

What a trip. Diggs has given up the most yards in the NFL and has the most interceptions with 11.

    • Tim Knight says:

He’s a feast or famine corner just getting started. If and when he learns the finer points of the game, his upside is huge.

  71. Ken says:

    Washington has checked out

  72. CavalierKong says:

    That play was amazing

  73. Ken says:

Ultimately, Brees nixed the idea, in part, because on such short notice, he wasn’t 100% confident he would be able to make the throws necessary to successfully lead the offense. He didn’t want to short-change the Saints in such a critical game at such a critical time in their playoff run.

  75. steveccnv says:

Every year it seems we lay an egg, when our destiny is in our own hands

    Let’s see what happens tomorrow

    • New Age says:

I was thinking this earlier today. We were in the same position last year and were destroyed by the Bills. I think we have this game but the next two…while winnable, needs our best effort. Can we put it all together? This late we should but it’s a tall order.

    • CavalierKong says:

Things have really lined up for us to beat the saints. It’ll be a huge disappointment if we lose this one.

@Tenn on a short week with them looking to clinch the division is really tough.

    • CavalierKong says:

I hear ya on the annual egg. When we came out flat last week, I thought “here we go”, but we turned it around.

Darlene is going to beat me for the 3rd time this year in FF. First time, she won by less than a point. Tonight, I needed 2 more points from Antonio Gibson and they aren’t playing him since 2nd q because they’re losing so bad. #WTFWFT?

Congratulations Darlene! Go get the championship for the girls!

  86. bailbondmike says:

  88. Brian in NY says:

Yes, I suppose being nervous of Ian Book is born from the last two decades of ineptitude and mediocrity. Thank you, Miami Dolphins; look what you’ve done to me.

  89. ocalarob says:

i;m not sure how we jump the Raiders with a win tonight? we would both be 8-7, they have the head to head over us also they are 6-4 conf, we are 5-5?

  90. ocalarob says:

we are 3-2 in the division, chargers are 2-2, raiders 2-3

  91. markets are bullish as hell,

  92. The Flying Pig says:

    Nice tackle Minkah

  93. wyoming85 says:

  94. CavalierKong says:

Rob, it’s a multi-team tie, and the 1st tiebreaker is divisional (only one team from a division moves on). The chargers knock the raiders out first, same as if we were tied with buffalo and they knock us out.

  95. New Age says:

In football, nothing non-Dolphins makes me happier than seeing Minkah have little success. I hope he visits the playoffs as little as Fitzmagic has in the future

    • steveccnv says:

The Patriots can clinch a playoff spot, though, with a win over the Jaguars and a Raiders loss next week

Looks like the Cheats will be clinched before we play them week 18, but if we win out it would push them down to #7

  97. naplesfan2010 says:

If you can go to the ESPN page that is depth charts and look up the Saints you will see an unmitigated disaster. 3 QBs out, 3 TEs out, The PK and the KR are out. The LB, OL, and DL are decimated. We look great compared to that.

I love this, but homerism aside, I think it is true to a degree.

I think this would make the game more interesting!!!!!!

  103. naplesfan2010 says:

“Mac Jones has a passer rating of 19.9 today.”

  104. wyoming85 says:

  105. too many NY wanna be reporters are bashing Tua while gargling Mac Jones balls!
at least they can multitask, lol but, but but,,,,

but Jones isnt ready for primetime yet, and Tua, IS prime time

  106. naplesfan2010 says:

Tua has played in some huge college games. I know you know this.
He got 418 and 4 against #3 LSU in the 2nd Burrow year. Put up 41 and lost.
The previous year they shut out #4 LSU in Burrow’s first year, 29-0.
Tua threw for 295 and 2 and ran for a 44 yd TD.

  107. The Flying Pig says:

I think Herbert had a bad game. I think young QBs should be able to have ups and downs. I’m a little less enthusiastic about Mac Jones, who really kind of got hyped up a little too soon

    • naplesfan2010 says:

I think both of them got a little over hyped, but both of them have skills and mindset to be a success in the NFL. I’m not dismissing either of their careers.
Not nearly as confident in the kid for the jest.

    • New Age says:

Belichick will be what helps Jones become a solid to great QB. He has all the support he needs, and the media won’t go after him like they do Tua. Of course, our coaches, owner, and FO are part of the reason Tua wasn’t getting the right support his first 1 and 1/2 seasons.

  108. CavalierKong says:

Yay! Internet is fixed. I can watch tonight’s game from the comfort of my own home.

I watched a movie last night, but had to order pizza delivery by calling the actual pizza place as if I was a freakin hobo. And to watch the movie we used some weird, little, silverish record looking thing. I had to get up off the couch and put it into a little slot in my PS5 and the movie just started playing.

I sat back down on the couch thinking how this must be what it’s like living in a 3rd world country. Bless the USA.

  116. steveccnv says:

If we win out and the Raiders win out both will be 10-7, Raiders play LAC, so LAC would have at least 8 losses and be out

Cheats and Ind could also be 10-7, since Cheats play us and Ind plays Raiders

First get only 1 team from each div, Cheats out, then head to head Raiders beat both, so they get 5th seed

then 3 teams Ind, Cheats and us go for the 6th seed, Cheats again eliminated first, head to head Indy wins, so the get 6th seed

7th seed we would beat out NE from div tie breakers based on head to head

Balt already has 6 conf losses, so they are irrelevant for this discussion

I believe this is how it would be, based on the circumstances I provided

Raiders play LAC and Ind, so I don’t expect them to be 10-7, I do expect Ind to be 11-6 and take 5th seed, that would give us the 6th seed and the Cheats the 7th

Think I’d rather be the 7th and play Tenn, than Bills

  117. Ken says:

I think Mac Jones has been a little bit exposed the last couple of games.

    • steveccnv says:

They’ve babied him most of the year, getting by on D, running game and great OL play

He needs to adjust now that they’ve been stopped

  118. Ken says:

I also would not say Herbert had a terrible but he did make a couple of critical mistakes

    • steveccnv says:

You want big play, quick strike it comes with more risk

If we can get by with Tua throwing for 225 yards a game, while hitting on 75% – 80% of his passes I’ll take that over a hot and cold Herbert

I say if we can get by…because he hasn’t beaten Buffalo

If he can beat Buffalo, then he doesn’t need to do more, consistency is better, but until then Herbert is the better QB

  119. CavalierKong says:

Retrospectively, we’re happy the Niners lost on Thursday.

  120. manitobafinfan says:

My disdain for Pats may have cost Stanger his win against Twice.. I left Harris on his bench in favour of AJ Dillon .. Harris had 30 pts vs Dillon 8.6 …he is down 21 pts but still has Fins D , while Twice has Baker … winner faces Darlene in the championship game

Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in!

  128. steveccnv says:

They have us at 99% chance to make the playoffs, if we win out

Ind and only 1 AFC West team, Raiders play LAC week 18, can get ahead of us in the WC

No one from the Central can

    The cheats can’t

What is that 1% that will keep us from making it?

    • CavalierKong says:

If we win, we’re in. There is no W/L outcome that could stop us, so that 1% must be if a comet destroys the earth or something like that, lol.

  129. Krishna says:

    A tie somewhere? Lol…

  130. Rockphin says:

Todd McShay talking about getting Book to play outside the pocket.
Todd our safeties will feast on him there.

  131. The Flying Pig says:

    T minus 2 hours

  132. Rockphin says:

Dolphins throw for Tua TD’s and run for Tua more tonight. Defense does it’s job and holds NO to 3 FG.

    31-9 Phins

  133. Rockphin says:

Backup 7th string OT blocking for Book tonight……

  134. Rockphin says:

They showed a stat a moment ago, Tua 69.5% accuracy Leads the league…But the truth is it is tied for the lead with Joe Burrow who has 125 more completions and 2024 more yards and 16 more TDs.

  135. wyoming85 says:

  136. The Flying Pig says:

    T minus 60 minutes

  137. naplesfan2010 says:

So it seems Ahmed is down in favor of Scarlett.

  138. Rhino says:

BBM, if you are on here tonight …

as a ND fan, I sure wish Book was getting his first shoot to start in some other game. Now I gotta cheer that his game is a nightmare.
For those of you who are NOT Irish fans, Ian Book ranks up there with some of their legendary QBs amongst Irish fans. He was an unlikely choice to take over as the starter over Wimbush in his sophomore year. Over those 3 yrs as starter he led his class to the only ‘undefeated at home’ for all 4 yrs in the history of the school. His improvisational play making won over the fan base.

So… let him get his confidence elsewhere. The gold on his helmet tonight is tarnished by the fleur-de-lis. lol

  139. steveccnv says:

How confident would you guys be, if our 3rd string QB, whatever his name was from preseason, was making his first start tonight?

    • naplesfan2010 says:

Not very, but book is the winningest QB in ND history, so he has serious talent, he’s tenacious, smart, and athletic.
We need to take him very seriously. He could be the next Brees.

    • steveccnv says:

Serious talent, such as weak arm?

      • Rhino says:

I haven’t missed a ND game in over a decade. Ian Book (if given time) has the arm. His problem tonight is his OL …. In his 3 yrs as starter he played behind a line that had 11 guys drafted, 3 in top 10. If the guy is open, and the pocket clean, he’ll hit them no matter how deep

      • naplesfan2010 says:

        Not a noodle arm though.

  140. bookman11 says:

Earlier this year instead of Briskette, I would have loved it

  141. steveccnv says:

Come on man! Moss showing his cheats stripes only one from ESPN picking NO

  142. bookman11 says:

    Love the all white uniforms

  143. Rhino says:

I like the all white unis. So many pictures in my head from those teams in the 70s wearing all white. It feels natural.

  144. mf13ss says:

    GO PHINS!!!
    HELL YEAH!!!

  145. steveccnv says:

If I’m NO I’m going to make Tua throw downfield

If they can’t stop our short passing and Tua doesn’t turn it over too much we win

    • Tim Knight says:

They were just talking about that on the NFLN that the Saints play a lot of man so it helps to cut down the RPO game – saying that works better against zone.

    • CavalierKong says:

As long as our offense and special teams don’t screw the pooch and give their offense short fields and/ or points, not sure how they beat us.

  146. Tim Knight says:

Oh boy it’s almost game time. 🙂

  147. Ken says:

    Getting green and sweaty

  148. Rhino says:

Remember the days when Dolphins-Jets was a GIVEN for Monday night?

  149. CavalierKong says:

Woohoo! Game time, let’s get it done!!

  150. Mike E. says:

WE are READY to show the rest of the NFL how to score on, and BEAT the New Orleans Saints.
LAST WEEK the defending Super Bowl champions, the Buccaneers, COULD DO NEITHER!!
Tonight, Tua and his boys will show the NFL HOW TO DO BOTH!!!

  152. Rockphin says:

    HERE WE GO!!

  153. Rhino says:

I haven’t been this nervous for the start of a Fins game in quite some time.

    …. could it mean … I care?

  154. The Flying Pig says:

I thought the ga,e started at 830….did it start early?

  155. The Flying Pig says:

    Wtf lattimore

  156. The Flying Pig says:

Well that worked like they drew it up….lol

  157. Rhino says:

  158. we need a turnover early to get the defense pumped

  159. steveccnv says:

    Nicky six

  160. Rhino says:

Rookie is gonna throw that every time.Flores knows how to rattle a rook.

  161. manitobafinfan says:

PSSSST. Come to game blog 👍👍

  162. lol that was the turnover the fins needed

  163. Tim Knight says:

  164. Rhino says:

let’s get this offense going. take the crowd out early!

  165. Tim Knight says:

  166. lol saint suck! they cant hang tonight

  167. Rhino says:

that’s an EASY call for refs

  168. Rhino says:

    what a terrible looking play.

  169. Tim Knight says:

  170. Tim Knight says:

Wow Phillip Lindsay has never fumbled in the NFL.

  171. Rockphin says:

This is not a playoff offense. Defense? Yes, offense? Nope, not close

  172. mf13ss says:

7 straight losses, followed by 7 straight wins!!!
