Game 16 – Dolphins @ Titans

Every game counts. While every game counts, once you get to this point of the season, to the point where playoff talk is no longer just talk, it’s a reality as the 7th seed in the AFC, the games right now are basically playoff games in and of themselves. There’s no room for error, any loss can potentially eliminate our playoff chances so when we square off against the AFC South division leading Tennessee Titans, this is HUGE. The Titans at 10-5 are one game ahead of the Indianapolis Colts. We are 8-7 and Wild Card #3, the #7 seed. It’s clear how we’ve arrived at this point, it’s the men pictured above that have carried us here. The defense is the unit that is ready for prime time, ready for the playoffs and maybe more. The offense has improved, but without stellar defensive play, this team can’t hang with the big boys.

This week we face a very good team. They’re not the same team without their star RB Derrick Henry, but they’re still a tough team. Derrick was injured in the 8th game of the season with the Titans at 6-2. Since then they’ve gone 4-3 to get to 10-5. They have a good defense, midpack statistically and the same for their offense. They are not nearly as fearsome without Derrick Henry in the lineup. The Titans haven’t scored 30 points since Henry’s departure and they’ve been held to 20 points or lower in 5 of those 7 games. QB Ryan Tannehill misses Henry. Tannehill wasn’t exactly killing it with Henry but he’s dropped off some without him. For comparison, Tannehill had a 90.2 QBR through 8 games with Derrick Henry. 10 TD’s – 7 INT’s, 2002 yards, completing 65.6% of his passes. With Henry OUT, Tannehill’s QBR is 78.6, 5 TD’s – 7 INT’s, completing 68.4% of his passes for 1325 yards. Clearly not as effective without the elite run game. The Titans trio of RB’s (D’Onta Foreman, Jeremy McNichols and Dontrell Hilliard) have managed only 755 yards combined since Henry’s injury. The good news for the Titans is that WR A.J. Brown is now healthy, and he’s the biggest threat in this offense. Tannehill has really had to spread the ball around when A.J. Brown was out. Still, Julio Jones is just a shadow of his former self and still has zero TD’s playing in 9 games.

Not being cocky here, but I like our chances with our defense against Tennessee’s offense. If there’s anything I know about Tannehill (and most QB’s really) is that they don’t do well with lots of pressure. I think if we turn up the heat on Tannehill our secondary could have a day. They will try and run the ball on us, as they should, but if we can hold up like we did against New Orleans and force them into 3rd and long situations, I think we’ll thrive like that. On offense, we have to protect Tua from LB Harold Landry, DE Denico Autry and DT Jeffrey Simmons with 11, 8 and 7.5 sacks respectively. The Titans have 37 sacks as a team, we lead the NFL with 45. The beauty of our defense is our sacks come from everywhere. DT’s, DE’s, LB’s, S’s, CB’s, all of them. DE Emmanuel Ogbah has been the constant throughout his tenure here in MIA. Rookie Jaelan Phillips and LB Andrew Van Ginkel have been coming on strong the second half of the season. Our scheme on defense has been tough to solve for opposing offenses. It’s the old Dolphins QB vs the new Dolphins QB. It’s the new Dolphins era vs the old Dolphins era. Can Brian Flores give this team the intestinal fortitude to step up instead of fold?

Historically over the last couple of decades, games like this have been a nightmare for Dolphins fans. I’d like to think it will be different, and I honestly do feel like it’s different, but it sure would be great to actually see it happen. Just last year it was against the Bills Game 17, and we were shredded by a team who pulled their starters after the 1st half departing after a 28-6 lead at half. We lost 56-26. In 2018, at 7-6, we got crushed by the Minnesota Vikings 41-17. In 2016, it was the Wild Card Playoff game against the Steelers losing 30-12 with Matt Moore in for the injured Ryan Tannehill. In 2013, at 8-7 we go up against the Bills with QB Tyrod Taylor OUT, and QB Thaddeus Lewis (Who???) in for Taylor, and we fall 19-0 as Ryan Tannehill before getting injured was sacked 7 times and put up a 46.7 QBR. These are the nightmares I’m talking about. Oh lord, we need to be different, we need to be better, we need to be tougher. We need our O-line to be mean Sunday. Maybe Duke Johnson and Phillip Lindsay bring the physical nature we need but we need the hogs up front to open holes and keep the defense off of Tua. We need to include DeVante Parker and Mike Gesicki in the pass game. I love Waddle but I’m going to guess that Titans HC Mike Vrabel, much like Bill Belichick will do his best to limit Waddle, which means the other guys I mentioned should have opportunities. Make it happen, make our fans happy, and turn that corner from meek and mediocre to tough and battle tested and winners!

A prayer for our friend Jon (#stangerstrong) Hoping for Godspeed in his recovery.

Happy New Year!!!

JUST GOT OFF THE HORN WITH my buddy “Buckeye Bob” from Columbus.
“Aren’t you guys getting tired of getting your asses kicked by an SEC team?”
He responded, “Well, it’s Michigan and Georgia is beating the shit out of them!
    We’re OK with that!”
    ——————–
“DOWN HER” I told him, “if a southern team is playing a Yankee team, we ALWAYS
root for the southern team, EVEN IF THEY’RE ONE OF OUR BIGGEST RIVALS!”
Another friend of mine (who went to Auburn) says if Bama or Georgia are playing
northern schools, “we always root for the southern schools.” Possibly, this has its
roots in the Civil War. But, among fans under 50, it’s purely regional. Anti-black
or pro-slavery points of view are seldom in play here during football season.
    ——————
BTW, with Texas and Oklahoma moving to the SEC in a couple of years, this
lopsided control of college football by the SEC is sure to continue. Big 10 fans,
the college football future doesn’t look so good for you.

So now we’re all concentrating on typical winter upticks with the cold, flu or whatever. It’s got to stop. I’m vaccinated, you told me to do it and I did. I’m not going to have swabs put up my nose like I’m taking a pregnancy test every few weeks or months. LOL

This is insane, folks! It’s almost like let’s give paranoid people a say in all of this because we always thought they were fuckin nuts. LOL

It’s not a typical winter uptick. It’s so bad here in Connecticut right now. Hospital beds are overwhelmed. They had to shutdown an urgent care clinic this week because there were not enough healthy health care to staff the facility. This is not a cold, this is not the flu it is still putting people in the hospital and on respirators

  11. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ken – just repeating what an ER nurse told me this week. Hospitals are inundated with people with mild, cold like symptoms going to the ER. She said it’s crazy, they’re totally overwhelmed and they can’t treat these people anyway.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Well it’s ventilators here and I know a lot of health care workers and it’s not that mild here. People with mild symptoms are not hospitalized. They may inundate the ER but it’s the actual hospital beds that are filling up and those are not mild cases.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s a stark difference for sure. All the cases round here seem to be Omicron and they have been mild. To be fair, all of the cases I know of are all vaxed

      • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

My ex says pretty much the same here. They’ve stopped all elective surgeries and staff and beds that would normally be for those patients are now Covid.

The other interesting thing is this: Staff are leaving, doing locum tenens at higher pay elsewhere because staff at that hospital has left to go elsewhere for higher pay and so on and on. Musical chairs. Healthcare is a mess right now.

No it wasn’t Tim. Hospitalizations are at the highest they have ever been here in Connecticut

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Right… because they tested positive for COVID. I was just at a wedding with people I know tested positive in the last few weeks from different states. They were there. A negative test is not a death sentence. Paranoia and hypochondriacs are ruling the day. It’s got to stop.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

No you don’t get hospitalized for having a positive test. You get hospitalized when you need assistance breathing. That is what the bulk of the hospitalizations are. I know a lot of people who work in the hospital system. They are not admitting people for cold and flu like symptoms. Those are seen in the ER and discharged

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ken, people get sick and die for all sorts of reasons. Not saying there isn’t a fucked up virus messing with us all. But it’s not killing people like it’s made out to be. If it was we would all be dealing with that and the numbers don’t match up. It’s a fear tactic.

Going back to what I said about the Omicron variant being a blessing in disguise due to it being mild. This video pointed out that the unvaxed who have had COVID previously had the same T cell response as those who were vaccinated. This Omicron could considerably reduce the number of unvax by giving those people natural immunity while, in most cases, suffering only a mild infection. They really should be counted as vaxed.

Question: If you have had both shots then come down with the Omicron or other variant, shouldn’t that count as a booster shot?

Conventional Wisdom has a team with a good OL and a powerful RB. this combo is suppose to put you in manageable down and distance on 2nd down, then the playbook is wide open and keeps the D guessing.
Our offense seems to be unconventional to say the least, trickery has never worked in the NFL.
is our offense Trickery? not sure but it’s definitely different.
will this offense work well enough to make us a contender? I certainly don’t know that answer.
with Tua avg 213 YPG it’s not like it’s lighting up the scoreboard.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

This offense will prevent us from being a true contender. The OL is abysmal, Tua needs to improve on his deep throws. I’m hoping that if the former improves next year the latter will as well.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We’re not ready to be contenders this year, it’s about making the playoffs

We have 2 winnable games in front of us, win them and we get our answer on Tua, if he plays the way he’s been

It’s always been about Tua this year, derailed by WTF are you doing Flores letting Flowers, KVN and McKinney go

  38. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  39. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I hate that they keep saying we are the only team in NFL history to win and lose 7 games in a row in the same season without putting it into context

Mainly because we lost 7 first, but give us some teams that were close, show us what company we’re in

  40. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

BRIAN IN NY; Completely agree with your 9:07 post that says “The O-Line has been abysmal.”
To me, the WORST PART OF THAT ISSUE is the fact that we’ve spent nearly a DECADE looking to upgrade it!!! – – AND FAILED!!! That’s why I firmly believe that changes in the scouting department ARE LONG OVERDUE (altho’, by his inaction, Ross apparently disagrees(!!!).
    ————-
The lack of a solid, reliable, O-Line is the #1 reason why this team is very unlikely to go deep into the playoffs (and I hope I’M WRONG on that opinion!) If we eventually get an NFL above average O-Line, the problems with the deep passing game should become more manageable.
    ————-
HOPE Young Stanger gets to see tomorrow’s Dolphins @ Titans game. I believe we will WIN THAT GAME and that the “medicinal effects” on his recovery will be noticeable!!
GO STANGER!! – – GO FINS!!

  41. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    OD,

I think it’s more about finding a top tier OL coach than scouting. All of the guys we’ve gotten are highly rated OL from multiple sites and sources. Yet, they do poorly here (and elsewhere tbh). What gives?

I think OL followed closely by TE, then DE and DB are the hardest positions in football today. No other position is as affected by lack of padded practices than OL or TE. QB is more like the college game. WRs are exactly the same. DE can’t touch QBs except in a very small window. DBs have all the rules stacked against them. LBs can’t hit as hard. RBs still hit the hole. Lots of changes but reducing padded practices hurt the game.

OL have to block the strongest and fastest young men America can produce on the football field. They get 16 practices a year max to learn their craft at a high speed. It’s just not enough. They can spend all year overworking muscles they don’t need in the gym, but the practice needed to be a good blocker? Fuck that, who needs that?! Not the NFL! Guys like Scarnecchia are like red diamonds. Almost impossible to find and worth everything you pay for them.

and go DOLPHINS , maybe this is the year they win a super bowl

  44. 2 points wins a game if the defense shuts the opponent out

Brian Flores is a defensive coach at heart, and heavily emphasizes defense first

over the last 7 games, the Dolphins defense has played phenomenal, and the offense had good field positions from turnovers and sacks generated by their defense

sometimes the defense scores as well, IE Nick Needham

championships are won by defense first and foremost, everything else can be complimentary, and thats been enough to win SUPER BOWLS

remember the Ravens won with Trent Dilfer, lol defense comes FIRST though,,,,,

  49. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    New Age,

I tend to agree with you on an OL coach. All of these guys can’t be THAT bad. You see some of our guys like Turner go to other teams and become competent starters, so there has to be something to that.

  50. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

We’re heading into week 17 with not a single player on the injury report.

We are currently -10 in point differential, the only currently slotted playoff team with a negative diff. The next closest current playoff team in differential is the Titans at +31.

With 2 games left to play, only 8 teams have been eliminated from the playoffs, only 3 teams in the AFC have been eliminated.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s mostly due to the fact that at 1-7, our one win was by 1 point but we had a 35-0 beatdown by the Bills and a 45-17 walloping by the Bucs

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I may be caught up in the hype, but I think we have a good chance of getting onto the positive side of that stat tomorrow.

  51. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The Titans Henry is reported to be working out with no limp and is expected to be ready for the playoffs.

If we make the playoffs, we may face this very same team again in two weeks with Henry toting the rock. (If the Bengals lose to the Chiefs this weekend, it’s a good possibility the Titans end up the #2 seed even after we beat them.)

  52. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I was watching NFL network and all 3 “experts” picked the Titans. I think that’s mostly on our offense. If they looked at the defenses, I think we have the edge there

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I think our defense matches up very well against the Titans, especially without Henry. They are at home and did get four more days than us to prepare though.

We know what Tanny’s weaknesses are. Without Henry to lean on, we should get a few sacks and force a TO or two. If that happens, and our offense does what they have been doing, I love our chances.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I do as well. As long as we don’t let them run successfully, I think we have the kind of defense Tannehill hates

  53. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    LOL, this is pretty wild.

With two games left to go, the Dolphins could still end up anywhere from the #2 seed to the #13 seed.

Disclaimer: (I’m not going to work out all the possibilities to confirm they could end up at #13. Due to the combination of teams playing each other it might be ‘only’ as low as #12, but my cursory glance makes me think we can still drop all the way to #13.)

Wyoming, I love that draft. Though, I think OG/C Parham may be a project player for a bit due to his size 285 pounds playing OG. Also, he is a RG/OC and would rather draft someone who has been playing LG/LT and ready to win a job like Thayer Munford. Parham is really talented though and still very powerful at his size.

You get me Jameson Williams, Kenneth Walker and Brandon Smith in the draft, I don’t care who else you get, you killed it. Especially with the double down on UGA RB James Cook. Nice!

Love this guy! However, I caution that his running style (ANGRY runner) may get him severely or frequently injured at the NFL level. I’m an instant fan but for that one caveat. He can be coached out of putting himself in dangerous situations though.

    Thanks, BBMike!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Aaron Jones and Dalvin Cook are angry runners. They run hard and fast all the time. You can’t take that out their game, it’s what makes them what they are.

  60. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s kind of cool that these games we’re playing now are kind of like playoff games. We need to win them to make the playoffs but if we lose it’s like being eliminated in the playoffs. So as we watch the games, it has the intensity of a playoff game. Each possession, the score, the clock, it’s all intense.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yes, these are the games that we have failed miserably. You know what though, we’re not that those teams. People can belittle our schedule but we won 7 in a row while the Titans are 4-3 in their last 7. We’re playing well, doing what we need to do to win. I hope we can continue that tomorrow. I don’t worry about Tua’s psyche, I think he’s confident and smart and knows what’s going on out there. Our defense will have to continue to set the tone but any big plays we get on offense are gravy

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

        My stomach is in knots

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah the schedule excuse is nonsense. This is the NFL. We see every week teams get upset by a team they were “supposed” to beat. Nobody cared when we were losing with a backup QB and injuries to key players. You still have to play the games.

As for Tua, he’s been playing in big games and moments his entire career.

I think it’s more about finding a top tier OL coach than scouting. All of the guys we’ve gotten are highly rated OL from multiple sites and sources. Yet, they do poorly here (and elsewhere tbh). What gives?

I think it has more to do with them being really young and learning on the job all at the same time. It’s one thing if a young OL or two are struggling playing with a veteran group, but we have 4 of them and we all know Jesse Davis is a borderline starter. We’ve also used 4 different centers this season. Not saying a top tier OL coach wouldn’t make a difference, but not sure it would be a lot. The players are still who they are and where they are in their careers.

He’s not a significant player though.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

No, he’s not a stud, for sure. He’s a rotational guy who has seen 4 starts this year, but I’ll take anything that helps our young O-Line in tomorrow’s game, including Murchison’s unavailability.

“We see every week teams get upset by a team they were “supposed” to beat.”

Yep! It happens all the time. Just looking at the games in December-

Week 16: Chargers got clobbered by the Texans.
Week 15: Lions shocked the Cardinals
Week 13: Lions beat the Vikings

Hell, it happened twice to us this year. We shouldn’t have lost to the Falcons or the Jags.

Must poking and hoping on a negative test?

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I could be wrong, but I think when they’ve been activated off of COVID, but are still questionable it means they have a negative test, but still have symptoms. So if their symptoms are clear by tomorrow they can play.

Just dusted my wings for tomorrow. House is cleaned, new security camera installed, microwave deep cleaned, cats are brushed. I’m out of chores and I still have over 19 hours until game time. What the heck do I do now? lol

Thanks for the recipes Kong- I’m going to have to try it! Are wings crazy expensive near you now too?

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

No prob, Bri! I wish there was a way I could post pictures in their various stages.

A 2.5 lb bag of wings is about $13-$14 at my local Safeway. It’s up a buck or two over the last couple years. If I catch them on sale, I can usually get them for about $8-$10 a bag and I’ll buy 10-15 lbs at a time.

    Game plan against the Titans.

Offense: The Titans are very good against the run but can give it up in the passing game. Therefore we should challenge that early and often to see where they’re at. Run to keep it honest but attack their weakness. Even if it’s short and medium range while taking some shots down the field. I pass more than run unless we’re somehow getting it going on the ground.

Defense: Right now the Titans are banged up on offense so they’re not the team that has been really good when at full strength. Obviously you want to stop the run and we’ve been doing that because Ogbah, Wilkins, Davis and Sieler are really good run defenders. Then the LBs and DBs join the feast We know we’re going to blitz Tannehill. The key is taking A.J. Brown out of the game or not allowing him to have a big game. I’d have 2 DBs around him all the time. We are a good man secondary so I think we’ll do that against the rest of their receivers.

Special Teams: That’s always the wildcard. You never know what’s going to happen. But I know we’re pretty solid there.

I see another somewhat low scoring defensive game to keep us all on the edge of our seats. Dolphins win 20-17 on a last second FG to make up for losing like that a few times this year. 🙂

  75. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

As far as the Offensive line knowing if it’s a pass or run prior to the snap, please see the video at the current time.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s not quite like that. So the discussion is nobody knows what the play is. Does that make any sense? We’re not running anything that other teams aren’t running. There is a lot of RPO out there and it doesn’t always involve the QB running. It is a form of play-action because the defense doesn’t really know if it’s a run or pass.

The OL knows the play. The QB could decide to hand it off or pull it out at the last second based on what he’s seeing. That’s now an improv play. Maybe he saw there is no LB in that gap and the RB has daylight. We throw so quickly in this system the OL rarely gets called for ineligible receiver getting too far down field, but it does happen.

Another point is we do not run RPO all the time. It’s not a system issue, it’s a talent issue. Our OL rarely converts short yardage in the run game when we have to have it. Even when we go big with Wilikins at FB we can’t punch it in unless it’s a pass play.

This OL is not good right now. We’ve all watched the games.

Would you have your best golf game during a hail storm? 😉

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Bro, Omar said that the Patsies* and our Phins both run the RPO, and that we’re essentially the same team. The Patsies* can run the ball, but we can’t.

Both Mac Jones and Tua came from Alabama, and Jones doesn’t have a cannon by any measure.

To me, it’s NOT about Tua. It’s about a lousy O-Line coach, a lack of gel time and/or lack of vets on the O-Line to stabilize the rooks, and the lack of a REAL grinding RB on our roster.

I’m absolutely CERTAIN we agree on most of the above, with the exception of Tua, my man!

By the way… Omar dribbles when drinking out of his cup! LOL

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Oh yeah… and Omar is WRONG about not knowing if it’s going to be a run or a pass in the NFL RPO. He’s talking college football, not the NFL.

For instance, the Patsies* O-Line doesn’t seem to have any problem knowing if it’s going to be a run or a pass in the RPO.

  90. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I don’t think that’s how we run things.

Maybe if they had 2 great WR’s and a all pro TE we would have to scheme a little bit?

but one guy? Either one of our CB’s can lock down 1 guy!

If anything we can shade Jones or Holland to his side & use the other to press Tanny?

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Agreed. The strongest part of our defense is our ability to play cover zero, that’s why we are able to blitz so much.

Bryan, He has been playing big the last 5 games since he caught 15 for 240 vs Nebraska but I didn’t notice him until I watched the MICH/OSU game. I thought maybe he was taking advantage cause teams had to account for Olave and Garrett Wilson. This game vs Utah tells me that was not the case since both Olave and Wilson opted out. He will be one to keep an eye on for 2023.

Also, who was that Marvin Harrison, Jr kid playing for OSU? Man, will be interesting to see if he turns out to be anything like his dad. OSU will have another dynamic duo at WR next year.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Yes, that game against Nebraska was his coming out party of sorts. He’ll get a lot more playing time with Olave headed to the NFL. I remember being kissed he went to Ohio State- he’s a Pennsylvania boy and PSU was of course recruiting him.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Yes. I’d like to see him be more accurate with throws down the field though. I know the OL contributes to that, but he really hasn’t been too successful in that regard.
