Miami Dolphins – Where do we go from here?

There are so many moves the Miami Dolphins organization need to make, the most obvious one is hiring a new Head Coach, and having that Head Coach assemble an entire coaching staff. I liked Brian Flores. I liked his no nonsense personality, I liked his toughness. I didn’t like the staff he put together, and that includes revamping his staff last season. As the group Depeche Mode says, “Everything counts in large amounts”. Flores was the architect of a poor staff. I’m not picking on him because he’s gone, just stating the obvious. I can’t say whether his first season’s plan was just to work with guys familiar to him, or he simply had no NFL ties and took what he could get. In 2019, He brought both OC Chad O’Shea and DC Patrick Graham from the New England Patriots. In 2020, Flores tabbed long time NFL’er Chan Gailey, who was probably pretty sure he was never ever going to coach again, and named him OC. Not that Chan Gailey wasn’t qualified, but I’m sure Flores’ call was the ONLY call Chan Gailey received as far as NFL offers were concerned. Chan Gailey departs so in 2021, Flores has the brilliant idea of naming Co-OC’s (supposedly in order to keep any teams from stealing them away), so 2020 Tight Ends Coach George Godsey and 2020 Running Backs Coach Eric Studesville are promoted together to form the NFL’s first 2 headed Offensive Coordinator Duo. Sometimes having more is better, The Tucker had a center headlight in addition to the 2 common ones on either side of the front of the vehicle. The center headlight actually turned left when the car was turning left and right when the car was turning right. Ingenious! The Co-CO idea, not so much. The Dolphins offense was 22nd in the NFL scoring 20.1 PPG and if not for the defense setting up the offense so many times, it would have been considerably worse.

I’m going to recommend something I know many of you here won’t be in favor of. I can tell you, I’m not sure I’m in favor it myself. Hear me out though. You can build for now, or build for later. Instant gratification or long term success. Either can be satisfying. The problem with my recommendation is that one important step needs to happen before this can even be possible. Michigan Head Coach Jim Harbaugh needs to step down from his current post. If that happens, I think we should be the first, and most likely the last to offer him a Head Coaching position in the NFL. When you hire a guy from the college ranks, you get a guy who knows all the college players, what they’re capable of, who the right ones are for what they want to accomplish, on both sides of the ball. What you usually get is a guy who doesn’t know the NFL, and how to deal with NFL players. Not the case with Harbaugh, who has successfully run an NFL team, quite successfully I might add. From 2011-2014, Jim Harbaugh compiled a 44-19 record with the SF 49ers. He did that with 2 QB’s who were not considered upper echelon talents in Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick. For some reference, Alex Smith was 19-31 in 5 seasons as the Niners QB. With Harbaugh, his first season was 13-3. His 2nd season was cut short due to injury but the Niners were 6-2-1 with Smith. So 19-2-1 for one and a half seasons after 19-31 in 5 without Harbaugh. We all know who took over after Alex Smith went down, my former crush Colin Kaepernick. No problem for Harbaugh. Kaepernick after taking over the helm went 5-2 and took the Niners to the playoffs. A huge upset 1st RD victory over the Green Bay Packers, 45-31 started an improbable run. The Niners then defeated the Atlanta Falcons 28-24 to earn a Super Bowl berth. The SF 49ers lost a thriller of a game, 34-31 to the Baltimore Ravens.

Still with me? My favorite MLB team the NY Mets made a very similar move recently. They decided to bring in a proven winner in Buck Showalter. Results have yet to be determined and if the bougy MLB Players Union doesn’t get it’s collective head out of its ass, we may not see a MLB season next year. The Mets have decided instead of hiring a young up and comer, they want to win NOW! Forget 3-5 years from now, NOW! They know Showalter knows exactly what he’s supposed to do in every and any situation, there’s nothing he hasn’t seen. The very same would go with Jim Harbaugh. I think it’s an extremely unique situation to be able to get a guy who is so in touch with the college game and all the players, yet has had tremendous NFL success as well. I say if Jim Harbaugh steps down as Michigan HC, Stephen Ross should fly one of his fucking planes as fast as they can fly and throw down some stacks of $$$$ to secure the best Head Coach for RIGHT NOW, the Dolphins can get. Personally, I think Harbaugh is a bit of a time bomb, and I have no idea how long he can last if he comes back to the NFL. My guess is it would be a similar gig to the Niners. He’d stay as long as they were winning. That’s not a terrible thing either. If for some reason he fails right off the bat, which I think is unlikely, he may try one more time. If he fails again I would think he’d step down and disappear and we’d probably want him to. I think if he does come back to the NFL, I think he’d be great for our team. Our defense would continue to flourish and he’d get Tua a run game if it killed him. Defense, running the ball, all the things we crave here. All that will make Tua better and more importantly, the Miami Dolphins better.

I’m open to other HC’s too, there are lots of ways to skin a cat. I actually don’t know how many ways there are and not sure why people think are so many ways to skin a cat, but there really are a lot of different avenues to explore in a Head Coach search. I’m sure Tom Garfinkel and Chris Grier are doing that as I type. Maybe it’s because I’m 58 now and my mortality is in the back of my mind. Who knows, maybe Mike McDaniel is the next Mike Tomlin. At 38 he’s a tad older than Tomlin was when he took over the Pittsburgh Steelers at the age of 35. To have continuity and longevity along with winning would be swell, but make no mistake about this my fellow Dolphins fans, the Miami Dolphins franchise is NOT the Pittsburgh Steelers franchise. The Steelers are steeped in tradition and their owner doesn’t flip-flop on their decisions. Since 1969, The Steelers had HC Chuck Knoll 1969-1991, Bill Cowher 1991-2006, then Mike Tomlin from 2007 – present. Not only do they have consistency, but they WIN. So do I crave the same? I would wait until we clean house of our current GM before heading out on that path, which is another strong reason I prefer Harbaugh. With Harbaugh at the helm, it’s gonna be his way or the HAR-way. If Chris Grier didn’t like Brian Flores, he’s gonna hate Harbaugh, because this would be his show, guaranteed. He won’t allow Grier to undermine him and his cachet dictates that he deserves as much. Unfortunately, Harbaugh may have no intentions of leaving his current post, but if he does . . .

To elaborate on some great news we got yesterday, I’d like to share that I also got to speak to Jon “Stanger” yesterday, and considering what that man has been through, I was absolutely shocked as to how great he sounded. As I’m typing now I’m literally getting goosebumps and tearing up because he literally sounded just like the old Stanger, and that’s not being kind, or overenthusiastic or wishful, that boy is BACK! Now he needs to get his body back to where his head is and he’ll be in better shape at the next Fest than he was at the last. He’s currently just dealing with atrophy from being in a bed so long, and I believe he will respond very well to rehab, both occupational and physical therapy. I have to give both Jon and his wife a lot of credit, they really clawed back from some tough odds. Maybe our Dolphins can do the same!

  65. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Great game!!! Brady and the Bucs losing was nice too. 🙂

  66. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Last 13 seconds Buffalo did everything wrong they could have, from a coaching standpoint

Kickoff thru ez, short kick runs at least 5 seconds off

1st down gave up 19 free yards

Next 1st down didn’t cover anyone, with a poor call

If it was me I’d have put 1 S deep 5 dbs on each receiver and grab them, not letting them get off the line, and have zero DL in the game and rush 1

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not kicking it in the end zone was the key. Make them return it. Not enough time to do what the Chiefs did if there was a return.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Steve, I said the something similar about grabbing the receivers. Once the ball is snapped, literally everyone grab an eligible guy, tackle them if you need to. Do that twice and then on the 3rd play everyone play deep. They would pick up 10 yards on 2 penalties and run at least 6-8 seconds off the clock. Then only have enough time for 1 play.

Even if KC throws the ball down quickly, you only have to do that 3 or 4 times max, they still aren’t in fg range for that final play and it comes down to a hail mary.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’ve been saying to do that for over 10 years, but no one listens, except John Harbaugh of the Ravens he did that in the SB against the 49ers, but from the O side on the last punt/play of the game

  67. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Fans of the Bucs, GB, Bills and Tenn probably on suicide watch

Rams fans maybe didn’t make it to end of game

  68. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I know a lot of you are bummed with our 1st round pick and are pissed at Grier. But Waddle, Phillips and Holland was a pretty special top of the draft for us last year. Just draft a good player with whatever pick we have.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The problem with Grier is Ross

By keeping him you put your team in win now, the chances of that happening with a 1st time HC are slim, yet here we go interviewing all of the first timers

Even if you let Grier go in the future you waisted those years he was retained and this is an important FA period with all the cap space we have, don’t want Grier in charge of that

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I hear ya. 2022 is a big year for Grier. He’s gotta bring in players both in FA and the draft that gets us to another level. We do have a good core to add talent to. It can happen in one offseason. Not saying Super Bowl but making the playoffs to get things started.

  69. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

My dad is always saying, why do they go into prevent D?

Today we saw a new low for prevent D

  70. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Was going to post and that’s why the media hates Tua, because he can’t win a shootout

After watching the end from the 2 minute mark again, I no longer feel that way, those Ds played so bad

Hill should’ve gone down on the 1, instead of giving the LB a piece sign, then KC could’ve ran the clock down some and burned Bills TOs

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Both defenses looked exhausted to me. Was watching with some friends and we all thought that.

Tua can’t win a shootout with the talent we have because we don’t have the skill players to do that. Go get em in the offseason.

  71. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The Bills/Chiefs game should show every team and every new head coach that if you’re thinking of building a team on defense, the run game and a ball control passing game, you’re going to fall short in the big games against the top teams. The Chiefs, Bills and now the Bengals are joining them are going to be around for awhile in the AFC. If we don’t go heavy offense in the offseason, we don’t know our opponents and what it takes to win. Sometimes you have to win these high scoring games. If you can’t do it you will always fall short.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Agreed, and you can only get so far. And I agree in the kick off- they should have squibbed it. Would have burned 3-5 seconds.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah but I wouldn’t have squibbed it, I would have kicked it to the 5 on a high kick. The coverage unit doesn’t go for the tackle inside the 20. Make him return it at least 15-20 yards and make sure you don’t call a coverage that might make you vulnerable to the big return, kind of like a prevent defense. All they want to do is kill 6-8 seconds. That leaves the Chiefs with 7 or 5 seconds at let’s say the 30. I don’t think they pull it off with that.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

        Either would have worked.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

A sqiubb kick to say the 25 to the up backs, they catch it and go down. 1-2 seconds. Kicking it to the 5 forces them to use more time for yards because they don’t want to be on the 10.

  72. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Free Agency:
    OL – 2 (starters)
WR – 1 (significant playing time – upgrade over our depth)
RB – (significant playing time – upgrade over our depth)
    ED – Re-sign Ogbah
And whatever else we feel we need to do on defense and STs with a lot of FAs that could go elsewhere. We have a good core to keep the defense ascending. Don’t fuck it up!

    Draft:
OL – 1 or 2 (maybe not early unless there is a stud, we have enough young learning on the job types)
WR – 2 (quickness and speed)
    RB – 1 (power)
Mix in some defense specifically LB.

Not saying just do this and we’re on our way. These players have to live up to it.

We can also trade up for special over volume. So we’re #29-32. It is possible that we trade up using our 1st, 3rd and a 4th to get into the teens/early 20’s for a player we covet. We’ll end up with 2, 4, 5, 7 and 7. We don’t need talent everywhere, we need a handful of upgrades here and there.

I’m a Miami Dolphins fan and I approve this message. LOL

  73. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

It’s a good thing that KC and Buff were full of talent, because the offensive playcalling, especially in key situations, was terrible.

Not upset, it’s just not fair

What other sport has it this unfair?

NHL 5 minute OT 3 on 3, then shootout, NBA 5 min OT, MLB extra innings

Even soccer, they play a 30 minute OT when a winner needs to be determined and may end in a SO for some leagues or Olympics

Not the NFL, they like the coin toss

The guy who likely is their guy just got freed up. I feel pretty strong that Dabol is their primary target. But also Frazier got freed up. Im not all about Frazier, their D hasnt been especially solid as it has been in the years before Frazier, they have been winning because they are outscoring other teams, like KC, who barely outscored them with a much better offense on paper.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

D, you might want to check your stats on Frazier’s D. They’ve been really good this year, #1 PA with 289 or 17 pts per game

D, Since you are out there this evening, what would you think of Alabama WR Coach being part of the new offensive staff? Holman Wiggins, who is the Assistant OC/WR Coach at Alabama.

He’s only been there 2 years but has a very good track record producing really good WR’s everywhere he has been. He has a hell of a track record.
    —————————————————————————————–
Lol sorry i dipped right after my last post. Oh and Tim i don’t know i thought she was part of the band, when i saw them she was one stage but maybe they were touring together? i am not sure. I don’t remember her being part of the opening band though.

And to answer the WR Coach discussion. I like it. I have to agree with Steve its not as difficult to get the recruits who will stud out but its consistency that i think is key. Every year they turn out not just one but generally two of the best WR’s in the draft. That’s not by accident and to me shows he is a good coach, at least with collegiate personalities. You always worry over the ability to reach the guys in college vs the NFL, just as with Saban, will he have the success in the NFL he has in college? Also how much of the strength of discipline comes from Saban vs his staff? I cant see it as a bad hire, but im curious to know how much he helps that group. I personally feel it could be significant, and i think it also means we might be leaning on targeting Williams in this next draft too.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

On one hand coaches are only as good as the players they coach

On the other you have guys like Belicheat, Reid, McVay, Payton, that turn out very good teams every year

I’d have to say Wiggins falls into the first hand, because he’s not proven otherwise, not saying he can’t, just think it’s more likely than not

A TINY little pop up will show up on the lower right hand corner that says “Follow” Next to the “follow” are three dots. Click the three dots.

when you click the three dots a pull down list that consists of “sigh up”,”log in” , “copy shortlink” & “report this content” will pop up. Select “Log in” from here and it will work. Trying to log in from the “you must be “logged in”” under the “leave a replay” does not work on Iphone. You have to do it from the three itzy bitzy teeny tiny little pull down menu of the three dots.

  84. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Be very careful not to click the “follow” by mistake. Every damn post on here will spam your e-mail inbox. LOL

Steve, that is freaking awesome! lol

“One shot to his upper chest area delivered by Von Miller early in the second quarter left Brady with a bloody lip, and a bone to pick with the game’s officials.

Brady turned toward referee Shawn Hochuli to voice his displeasure with a lack of a roughing the passer penalty after being hit by Miller, drawing a flag — just not for the reason Brady wanted.

Brady was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct for the first time in his career. Hochuli explained the flag after the game.”

The days of Brady demanding and being awarded penalties are over!! WOOOOOO HOOOOOO!

    Go Hochuli!

Why would he want to continue playing in a league, that’s not going to give him preferential treatment🤔

Wouldn’t be surprised, if he bit his own lip

First play from scrimmage I noticed the spot was correct, and not the extra yard Brady’s teams usually get, thought at that point the Rams would win

Yeah it only took his entire 20 year career for it to happen

I honestly thought the OT rules were that if the team that is won the toss scored a TD, the other team would get at least one drive to score a TD

I’m fine with the OT rules- it just sound like sour grapes now. The bigger issue is the Bills D gave up 44 yards in 9 seconds.

Quinn and Daboll both have second interviews with other teams today. Those are two of our best options IMO.

  91. Randy's avatar Randy says:

No, the problem is that the NFL has messed with the rules so badly to favor offenses that teams can score 25 points in 90 seconds. That’s the real problem. This isn’t football anymore. They’ve destroyed the competitive balance. You see offensive players make “ great” plays all the time because defenders are afraid of getting flagged.

And, I dislike all these retread HC options! Bah humbug!

  92. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Since the rule changes to overtime, there have been 11 overtime games in the playoffs…the team that won the coin toss has won 10 of those…

It’s much more even in the regular season. Since the rule changes, there have been 163 regular season OT games. The coin toss winner has won 86 and there have been 10 ties.

I have a feeling Brian Daboll is going to be the HC of the Giants.
