Dolphins 2022 Free Agency

Sorry Dolphins fans, this Free Agency thing has left me deflated and disappointed. To be fair, Free Agency isn’t over yet, but up to this point, I haven’t seen anything that to make me feel optimistic about our chances for the playoffs this season. It’s not about grabbing big names, if you know me, I’m not that provincial, but I’m very uninspired with what I’ve seen from Chris Grier and Co. as so far. We re-signed a bunch of players, and I’m thrilled we got a contract done with DE Emmanuel Ogbah. He was an absolute necessity, a huge part of our defense and having him along with Jaelan Phillips should be an even more dangerous combo this season as Phillips learns and grows. After Ogbah though, I feel like we almost got complacent. Plus, Ogbah was here already, we just managed to retain him. So where are the upgrades we desperately needed?

We got some feel good re-signs like Elandon Roberts, Sam Eguavoen, Brennan Scarlett and Duke Riley, but if I sure wouldn’t have minded instead of re-signing every single LB that was on our roster that maybe subtract 2 or 3 or 4 of those guys and get Bobby Wagner. Wagner would be an immediate upgrade over any and every LB we re-signed. I want to elevate, not levitate. It’s not like we had the best defensive unit in the NFL and just had to keep it intact. Far from it. We were a decent defense, better than average, although right in the middle of points allowed. At the moment, Bobby Wagner is still available. He’s such a quality individual, he would have to be one of the captains, a guy teammates would look up to. He would make our defense better, and while #55 Baker had a fine season again last year, he’d be ever better with Wagner, everyone would.

Time for the meat and potatoes. Ah yes, the O-line. So far we have Connor Williams, who is a a talented yet flawed player, not too unlike 4/5 of our O-line before he got here. He’s further along than our current crop perhaps with the exception of RG Robert Hunt. He did have a propensity for flags last season and that needs to be fixed. He’s a very good run blocker and fits what we want to do here. I still feel like Austin Jackson and Liam Eichenberg will be our LT and RT respectively. Unless of course we sign Terron Armstead, but I don’t see that happening. I still feel like we need an upgrade on the interior, specifically C. It’s possible that upgrade come via the draft in Tyler Linderbaum, but would be willing to trade up to get him?

We had a bunch of re-signs for position players too, Preston Williams returns for a show me season. Former Dolphins (and 49ers) RB Raheem Mostert also returns. We gave former Cardinals RB Chase Edmonds a nice 2 year contract. He does however scream RUNNING BACK BY COMMITTEE, and that’s fine, but we seem to pine for an upgrade every single season but it never seems to come. Besides that, I feel the need to point out that we have been just atrocious in our record of free agent running back signings, beyond awful really. Jordan Howard, Matt Breida (He was a trade), and Malcolm Brown. The production of those 3 probably doesn’t add up to what Myles Gaskin gave us last season. Now to the WR’s. Cedrick Wilson. He could be a decent player but upgrade? I mean big upgrade? Wilson played primarily on the slot but can play outside as well. He had two 100 yard games, but take into account that Dak Prescott threw for 4449 yards last season, not impressive. He was #4 in targets last year, behind Cee Dee Lamb, Amari Cooper, and Michael Gallup. He finished the season with 602 yards and 6 TD’s on 45 receptions. Not bad, but like most of the signings except Ogbah and Gesicki, is not bad what our anemic offense needs? It’s true that this draft is chock full of WR talent, and one of them will undoubtedly be available at #29, but then you kiss Tyler Linderbaum goodbye. My point is, unless we fix either the WR situation in FA, or the O-line in FA, it’s going to be difficult to expect both of those to be addressed properly via the draft with our current draft position. Do we trade away future assets, or players in order to do that? It’s possible.

We definitely upgraded our backup QB situation signing QB Teddy Bridgewater. I always liked Bridgewater, he’s a gamer. He’ll be a good guy for Tua to lean on. I like the FB signing of Alec Ingold although he is coming off an ACL tear November 16, 2021. He’s a team captain and a guy that will be a spark in the offense. We also signed former 49ers WR Trent Sherfield who is mostly a ST’s player. Remember, we lost WR Mack Hollins to the Raiders. If you’re looking for positives, OG Connor Williams is a very strong run blocker. FB Alec Ingold is also a strong run blocker but again, we need to add more talent on the O-line and in the RB corps. Chase Edmonds, Raheem Mostert, Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed and Gerrid Doaks. Which one of these guys does the opposing defense worry about running the ball? I’d like one guy that the defense thinks about before the game “Man, I really hate tackling that due, he’s physical”. That guy isn’t on our roster.

If you subtract the re-signs, you have to be underwhelmed by what we’ve done. I like the Connor Williams signings and while I have a La’el Collins chiffon robe that has never been worn, I don’t think I’ll get that opportunity. He’s probably going to the Bengals to win. Speaking of winning, the Bills signed Von Miller to a monster 6 year contract. Think we need to fix the O-line? Let’s just play in fantasy land for a moment and say La’el Collins doesn’t feel the love ($$$) from the Bengals and we somehow snatch him up. My guess would be the O-line would be as such:

LT Austin Jackson

LG Connor Williams

C Michael Deiter (Or Tyler Linderbaum?)

RG Michael Hunt

RT La’el Collins

That wouldn’t be bad, especially if you sub Linderbaum for Deiter. Back to the defense for a second. Now that we have every single LB we had last season after re-signing THREE, how about getting Bobby Wagner?

LDE Emmanuel Ogbah

NT Raekwon Davis

RE Christian Wilkins

WLB Andrew Van Ginkel

LILB Bobby Wagner

RILB Jerome Baker

SOLB Jaelan Phillips

CB Xavien Howard

CB Byron Jones

S Jevon Holland

S Brandon Jones

Doesn’t that look, and feel good? Seriously, give Bobby a nice front loaded contract and if his play declines after a couple of years, it won’t hurt at that time. It’s NOT about making a splash, that would legitimately be a big upgrade on defense. He’s such a smart, instinctive player and a high character, high motor individual. I would really like that.

Now for the bad? news . . . The WR corps.

DeVante Parker, Jaylen Waddle, Cedrick Wilson, Lynn Bowden Jr., Allen Hurns, Preston Williams, Trent Sherfield, River Cracraft, Cody Core and DeVonte Dedmon. Isaiah Ford is a Free Agent. Can you ever really expect DeVante Parker to play healthy for a full season? NO! I love to watch Parker when he’s healthy, he’s a game changer. Maybe that happens 5 or 6 games a season. Will Allen Hurns survive cutdowns? Probably not. Preston Williams is a DeVante Parker in clone healthwise, he can’t stay healthy either. In other words, it’s Waddle, Wilson and who????? I feel like our 1st and 2nd RD picks have to be used on C/WR/RB. But that’s THREE! We only have 2. Say we traded one of our future 1st RD picks from 2023, where we have two. We pick up Tyler Linderbaum at 29, then trade up to the next spot and take Jameson Williams and then with our next pick we take either Kenneth Walker or Breece Hall. Now you’re talking, right?! Don’t bet on it. There’s still a chance to improve this team, Free Agent C’s J.C. Tretter and Bradley Bozeman are available. Bobby Wagner is also out there. Make us smile, make us better!

Maybe, just maybe, with expectations low, we are high achievers this year. It’s usually completely the other way around.

Draft well and a couple more FAs and all’s well. I’m really pleased with what we’ve done in FA.

Son and everyone else — below are the home games next season. I’ll fight to the death against Packers, Steelers and Pats if they fall in the window, but all else seem doable. Even a lot of cold weather teams whose fans might be looking for sunshine. Which also means early on heat games should be all the more that.

Game dates aren’t out yet, right? Don’t we have to wait and see who we play and when?

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Yes date is more important for me than the opponent

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yep — think schedule comes out in May, but we normally have 2-3 games that fall in the normal Fest window of Oct to 2nd game in Nov. And no London game this year.

Just talking about dates that might be a no go as far as ticket prices. Remember that one year you and someone else wanted the Steelers cause had friends that would come down? Reality set in right quick.

  4. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I really like the Connor Williams signing and the Cedrick Wilson signing. I am also glad that we are not pursuing our old of trying to get the big shiny object which has never worked for us. That said I still think more needs to be done to address the OL. Until we do that and or wait to see what we do in the draft our off season grade is incomplete

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s not about shiny, it’s about upgrading talent and finding better players that fit what we want to do. If you think Cedrick Wilson is better than what we had last season, fine. I hope Connor Williams is, I do believe he will be. Do you expect Wilson to do more than he did last season? I’m not busting, I just want to see what you think he can do for us

  5. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Man Mike E — you put in not just your normal good write but a lot of time into that one. I’m not nearly as down as you, but first impression is that you didn’t even talk about keeping Gesicki. Yeah was a tag instead of FA signing, but in a cap world isn’t that about the same thing?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Sorry — you did mention Gesicki in passing.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not thrilled that we tagged him, I would have preferred a contract, Makes it seem like we’re not really sure we want to keep him. We made it clear with Ogbah we want him long term.

  6. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

Ken is right. For me, Teddy B with that contract is a steal. Tua gets hurt and we just keep on truckin. LG Williams crucial to partner with Hunt. Wilson Jnr. promising slot guy to release Wassle to the outside. Edmonds and Mostert are an upgrade on Lindsay and Gaskin. Achmad will also suit the new scheme. OC is the key TBD. ILB to be found. OT, we can stay with the young guys and coach them up if no vets wanna come to us.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Teddy Bridgewater was a great sign, but on that same token, I hope he never plays, because that means Tua is healthy and playing well.

  7. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

If I was to set the priorities

I would rather go with Dieter at Center next year than Davis at RT!!!!!!!

  8. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

The STUD we got back is OGBAH.Think carefully on this. There is no-one to replace him in FA. The draft DEs are going to go way too early for us and most of them are rushers who need to learn to run stuff. Again we got him on a great deal.

  9. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

    Wyo…
    OC
    OT

Dieter is good depth, Davis on the 1st bus outta town.

  10. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Stanger,

That was me, and I actually went to the Steelers game with my buddy, then flew down for the fest game against Buffalo the following week. Ajayi rushed for 200 towards in back to back games and I was there for both. Plus the Dolphins won them both! That was in 2016, and started our run to our last playoff appearance.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Two great games and props to you for the back to back. Hope you can make it this year.

But folks have to realize when it comes to the Fest and ticket prices, I’m a Walmart shopper. Plus those teams tend to be worse. Big drop in the energy post-game when we lose.

  11. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Also Mike E, I’m fine with our 5 WR’s being DeVante Parker, Jaylen Waddle, Cedrick Wilson, Preston Williams and Lynn Bowden Jr. Each of them has starter in them to me. Plus maybe a 6th mainly there for special teams. Also one of the things about using a full back is that you need less wideouts.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I actually omitted Bowden Jr. The problem with counting on these guys is Parker is almost a guarantee to either be hobbled or miss a half a dozen games. Add in another 8 games of the same for Preston Williams. Bowden Jr. didn’t even play last season. That’s a lot of hope and praying right there. lol

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Parker, Williams, and Bowden haven’t been able to stay on the field. Wilson has been a role player his entire career. How are they starters in your eyes?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Almost all of Wilson’s pretty good stats came in the 4 games he started last year. Gave him a bullet and why we gave him much as we did. So yeah starter in my eyes. We could argue about Preston and Bowden, but both are at least mighty fine back-ups who have flashed when on the field. And the new O should be a great fit for Bowden.

  12. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  13. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I’m on board with you Mike. Aside from Williams, we have just replaced guys who have produced for our team with guys who might produce for our team.
A successful offseason for me would have been to re-sign Ogbah, Gesicki, Smythe, Duke, Lindsay, Hollins, and Ford. Grab a difference maker at WR and LB in FA then 2-3 vets for the line at C, G, and T. We’ve taken half measures and are hoping that coaching is the huge difference. We need both coaching and talent.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Apparently, some feel Ced Wilson is a difference maker and that re-signing all our LB’s is good enough. I think Bobby Wagner would elevate our defense, even at 32. He had a 170 tackles last year, 93 solo. His 93 solo is more than any Dolphins defender COMBINED tackle number for some reference.

  14. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Also, I haven’t seen where we brought back Duke Johnson. Am I missing something?

  15. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

In the past we threw money at guys who weren’t going to help our team because they were me-first guys looking for paydays or they weren’t worth the contract. Bobby Wagner will help this team. It’s not even comparable to contracts given to guys we’ve given in the past. It’s smart money.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Couldn’t agree more. Nothing shiny about Wagner, he’s just a great player on a unit that could use a great player. We have a lot of good players, and maybe one great one in X, so maybe it’s time to stop overrating what we actually have. there’s a reason X goes to the Pro Bowl alone every year!

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

SB – I think I whiffed on Duke Johnson. I was researching all our signings and I think I found an old link about us signing Duke

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Stanger – Yes, Steelers and Packers fans do a Hard Rock takeover so to speak. Has to be different teams for sure.

  18. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Wilson Jr. very well could be a difference maker, but when I watched his film, I didn’t see much of a difference of what we had in Ford. Their measurables are even similar.

  25. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, everyone has their own opinions and feelings about our team. I didn’t expect us to sign big name guys even if maybe a wanted a few. But Ogbah was one of those and even though he was already on our team it makes it seem like we didn’t add any major additions. But if we had let him walk it would feel worse. I’m kind of just looking at what we did and seeing the plan. Not getting too high or two low.

I know many of us were looking for more vet OL help. Maybe we still do, but the draft is still in play and even though our OL was really young and struggled, I don’t think the team looks at it that way right or wrong. The draft is still going to be a big deal for us. Then a lot of it comes down to performance on the field and a big part of that is Tua. The coaches having his back is a big deal and I do think our offense will be better. I think we have a better structured coaching staff on offense that all come from the WCO principles so they’re on the same page. Flores changed his OC and OL coach every year which wasn’t much of a plan.

So that’s what I’m banking my optimism on.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t mind optimism. I just ask what moves we made that make you feel optimistic and why because I want to try and see something I might be missing, besides just supporting the team. I’m not challenging anyone, I just want to see the other side’s viewpoint

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not sure about a reason for optimism rather than the way was to be expected, but most of the signings on O’s are guys who fit right into the San Fran O McDaniel ran before.

  27. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Cool that we re-signed Smythe. He does a lot of things at TE.

  28. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – What are your thoughts on signing Bobby Wagner?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’d love to have him but I don’t see him signing with us.

Another thing with what I said earlier is that part of FA is not losing a bunch of players. I think there is real value in keeping a team together, especially one that seems to like playing with each other. We’re building on what we started. We haven’t done that much in recent years. We always seemed to just add new and churn the roster and direction year after a year. That never worked.

The offense needed to change and it’s happening. I don’t think we’re done. Our RB room is better and I think Cedrick Wilson is an ascending player. I expect other young players like Waddle and maybe a guy like Bowden to get better too. Again, a lot of it will be about Tua taking his game to another level.

  29. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Mike,

In regards to Gesicki, I don’t think it a matter of whether or not we’d like to keep him long term. He’s been very vocal about being a “slot receiver”, which means he wants to be paid better than a TE. I’m sure they knew they couldn’t come to terms on a long term deal, but this gives us time to work one out. I think it will get done eventually.

  30. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Some brutal numbers for last year’s guys except for Hunt and Dieter. Makes an argument for going T instead of C.

  31. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Bryan, I think 4 mil is a good price for Smythe. He proved he is a decent and reliable receiving TE. He is our best blocking TE, by far. I mean, we are paying Cethan Carter 2.5 mil.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Haha! I would think Carter get cut soon; he won’t cost us anything against the cap.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t know what to think about Carter. He didn’t do much as a receiver since he’s been here. He is a good blocker and STs player but not sure if he’s a fit now.

  32. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If we needed money to sign Wagner, we can get relief by releasing Hurns, Rowe, Carter and Little. That’s over $10M this season

  33. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Devante Adams blew up the WR market. Don’t forget the Raiders also gave up first and second rounders.
    ——
“The top of the market for a new multiyear deal was $20 million per season, which we saw for Amari Cooper, Mike Williams and Chris Godwin. Adams has moved that all the way to $28.5 million per season.”
    —————-
    Makes a case for:

1 — getting a quality WR high up in the draft, like we did with Waddle.

2– signing a mostly unproven one with a bullet for far less like we did with Cedrick Wilson, or

3 – keeping an injury prone one with proven talent like we have so far with Parker.

  34. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Stanger – One thing about having to pay great players is that you have great players! Seems like you’re saying better to have players you can’t count on and ones that don’t command high salaries. That’s why we miss the playoffs every year! lol

Just in case you’re not sure, I get your point and it’s valid, but I sure would like to have a lot of great players to have to pay because with great players having great seasons usually coincides with playoff berths.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We don’t have to pay anyone yet because many of our good players are on rookie deals. That’s how we’re built right now.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

In my mind giving up #12 last draft and our first in this one in this one (#15) for Waddle was paying for at least potential greatness. And no sign he won’t be just that.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah it’s about landing really good players, not just having picks. Teams are trading picks away like giving out candy these days.

  35. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We are up to 69 players on the roster. Not sure where our cap is after the Smythe signing.

  36. Randy's avatar Randy says:

We need to improve this roster. It’s as simple as that. We do not have the players on this roster to win a championship, IMO. I think we need better talent at WR, LB, OL, Edge and RB….and possibly even QB depending on how Tua develops. Now, that’s without taking into account the FAs we just signed. None of us know how they will perform here, so I’m not gonna take them into account right now. Still, I don’t think any FA we signed or kept is the sort of player who’s gonna be elite or a game changer. We have very average talent, for the most part.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Phillips could be that Edge guy this year. When you’re mostly built through the draft like we are, you have to give them some time to take the next steps. I mean we won 10 and 9 games as these young players develop. Shouldn’t they get better? I also don’t think RB is a big need anymore, especially in the scheme we run which is very RB friendly. That’s been its reputation forever. You don’t need elite to be productive.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

      I agree completely….lol

  37. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I miss the days of the Jets always being in cap hell. They really fixed their shit since all of T-baum’s shit has come off the books. They have the least amount of dead money in the NFL. Dolphins are second. They still have 31 mil of cap space (top 51) with the most players singed in the NFL at 78 under contract for 2022. In comparison, we are 4th with 69. They have already had a good free agency and on top of that they have 9 picks in rounds 1-5.
    1st Rd #4, #10
    2nd Rd #35, #38
    3rd Rd #69
    4th Rd #111, #117
    5th Rd #146, #163

I also hated the sites 3 round mock for them:
4 Kayvon Thibodeaux EDGE | Oregon
10 Derek Stingley Jr. CB | LSU
35 Jahan Dotson WR | Penn State
38 Christian Harris LB | Alabama
69 Damone Clark LB | LSU

They are rebuilding the right way. We didn’t and now we are trying to piece it together.

  38. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Phillips might be that guy, but we don’t know that yet. Without counting Edmonds, our RB talent is completely forgettable. We’ll see how they do this year. Getting this new system…or at least what we think they’ll do….installed and running smoothly is not going to be an easy or quick process because it is based on proper technique and coordinated execution that usually takes a lot of practice time to get right. Not so much for the RBs but for everybody else.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Phillips showed me plenty to believe he’s on his way.

We signed RB Raheem Mostert who knows the system. I know there is a lot of work to be done on offense, but it has to start. I’m not saying we’re championship ready but I do think we can be a good team.

Some are, some aren’t as much. Grier tries to get too cute with that shit, IMO. Look where it has gotten us this year as far as draft position. Only 3 of 8 picks this draft are our own. Yeah, we have 8 picks, but only 2 in the top 100. The other 6 are in the bottom 150ish.

Next draft, we are set up very well with 4 picks in the top 50 or 5 picks in the top 81. Watch this coming draft how they fuck that up also. I am not talking about the Waddle deal. They didn’t have to trade up for Eich or Long.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t remember exactly what I said but I’ll try to duplicate it. Let’s say we want Tyler Linderbaum to be our Center but do not think he’ll be there at #29. We trade our 3rd and maybe a mid round pick to move up into the teens. Then we trade back into the 1st with our 2nd and one of our 1st round picks next year to land a WR we really like.

I know people get nuts about trading picks, but it’s about adding players, not just having picks with a # attached to it. We would still have a 1st next year. Do we want to wait until our young players all become FAs and we have to replace a bunch of them, or would we like to start adding to it and win now? That’s the benefit of accumulating draft picks, it gives you lots of options to get better.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Gotcha – I totally agree. I’m past the point of being afraid to use picks. If we can get 3 special players in rounds 1 and 2 that we want by giving up a future pick, I won’t care.

What do those signings have to do with Wagner, he can’t take the place of 4 guys? Maybe he doesn’t want to play for us

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OK, we wouldn’t have signed Elandon Roberts if we got Wagner. Depth you can get after, find someone special for a change. It’s definitely possible he doesn’t want to play for us but we have to ask first to find out.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Because they moved the ball pretty good at times despite the OL, so having a better running game and more time to throw would make the WRs better, hence as long as we get the OL fixed

. Chase Edmonds, Raheem Mostert, Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed and Gerrid Doaks. Which one of these guys does the opposing defense worry about running the ball?

Mostert can be that guy, but we don’t need that guy, we just need to run when we need to, including run to score in close, keep D honest and pick up short 1st downs

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

All true if the O-line is good to excellent. If it’s average or below average, sometimes a very good player can still be effective, even when the O-line isn’t its best. Now I can’t say if Kenneth Walker or Breece Hall will be that player, but we don’t have that player right now.

  64. New Age's avatar New Age says:

That Cleveland deal is really special. Really special. Watson will probably be suspended for 6-8 games. So they are paying him $230 million for about 4.5 years. He’s 29-29 as a starter. Cleveland just lost OBJ and Landry (but added Cooper). They play in an decent division so he could make them great. I don’t know how with the AFC West being so loaded though. I also hope he gets injured and he really has zero reason to play if he has a minor injury and they haven’t been winning. Just a dumb deal but it’s Cleveland.

  65. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, there will be some continuity on offense because we still have a bunch of guys from last year. We needed some new blood and we’re not done yet. The entire system is going to change so there will definitely be some growing pains, but we had that last season all year long. None of us wanted that same offense again.

As for the OL I think the new coaches may see potential in some of our young guys that fit how we’re going to play. It’s hard for many of us to have faith in it, but they see stuff we don’t see. Nobody on this blog is breaking down the snaps of every OL on this team with a professional eye. The coaches have done that because they’re paid to do it. They might have said what were they trying to do on these plays? Yeah we won’t be doing stuff like that.

We are building a solid base, but if Tua doesn’t work out gonna need all the draft trading stock we can muster. Tua blows it up this season in the new O…. then we can start spending like drunken sailors.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

      My sentiments as well

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We ain’t there yet because building through the draft for the most part takes a few years. We’ve been doing that. We act like we’ve been going 4-12 and 5-12 the last 2 years. We’ve knocked on playoffs door the last too seasons. Why not try to get through it instead of more “well we have picks next year” that will surely be the one. You can’t rebuild forever.

The entire organization is behind Tua now. That has not been the case since he’s been here. Keeping picks for just in case he fails does not mean you find that guy either. How about using them to give him the best chance to succeed.

The Browns just traded for Watson. They don’t have multiple 1st round picks in any year, they traded away 3 years of them. We could do the same thing if Tua fails.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Cause I want to over time build a team than can at least compete for the playoffs every year like the Pats and Steelers have done in the past. I prize that goal over throwing all caution to the wind with an uncertain QB and what looks like a fringe playoff roster for next season.

And building that organization doesn’t stop you from going all in when the window presents. But that window is not here yet.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Why not if you add more players that makes us better now? We’ve done what you’re hoping for. We have a bunch of manageable contracts. Lots of young players on rookie contracts. But the longer we wait, then we have to start replacing core players when they become FAs.

For instance, we have to decide whether or not to pick up Wilkins 5th year option this year. I would. It happens fast.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If anything this board proves that almost none of us would be the same type of GM as far as team strategy. Already explained why not above…. mainly comes down to uncertainty about Tua and what we will need if he is not the QB to make us elite.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

  70. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Besides, there isn’t anybody in this draft who we could go get that is gonna somehow transform us into a contender. Really that is only QBs, and there aren’t any of those sorts of guys in this draft…at least nobody seems to think there is a QB like that in this draft. You never know.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Who is suggesting trading for a QB?

So making some deals to add some really good prospects that could make us a much better team now can’t happen, but next year for sure?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t think there’s a QB that would transform us but I think there are a couple of skill players that you can make the focal point of an offense

Walker and Burks are my two guys

      Generally I don’t think it’s a great draft
But I do think there a a couple of players that can be difference makers

  73. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Oh my, I suggested trading a 3rd and a mid round pick to move up from #29, then traded a 1st next year to get back into the 1st for another prospect this year. Somehow that means we’ll have no draft next year. Not sure how anyone sees it like that.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I sure don’t, but then again wasn’t talking about what you said. Was clear just don’t want to trade future 1sts and 2nds and by that meant after all the wheeling and dealing is done.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I didn’t trade a future 2nd, it was this year’s 2nd packaged with a 1st next year to get another 1st this year, late in the first.

Let me ask you this. Where do you think our 1st round picks will be in next year’s draft? It’s ours and the 49ers.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And that is all the more reason I was not replying to what you said….. so why bring it up again? And our picks next year will probably be mid-to– to late. But who knows maybe we trade our first or 2nd to some team and have three.

I think Amari Cooper is a #1 WR, and he’s got a shot to have a great year with Watson. They have a really good RB and FB. They have a pretty respectable OL. Njoku is a pretty good TE. They have a good overall defense that is certainly good enough to win a championship.

The NFL salary cap being what it is, there are a few additional twists. A player can be cut as soon as the new league year begins in March and still be designated a June 1 cut, thus saving some cap space in the current year while pushing some of the hit into the following year. Teams are limited to the early (pre-June 1) designation of no more than two players per year as June 1 cuts. This is done to accommodate players who would prefer to be available in free agency immediately rather than wait until June 1 when many teams are close to out of funds for free agency.

  91. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t believe we have to have another RB or LB to be a good team. It would be nice but I don’t think that’s a need at this time. We need to score more points. Is a rookie RB the key to that? I don’t think so. Another guy to help solidify the OL and a WR with speed could change things though.

We don’t need a boat load of players, we need to add a couple more impact players. That can be blocking and another guy who creates mismatches as a receiver. That’s what I think we need to take the next step. More blocking and another guy that calls the dogs off on Waddle. He should not be a Landry type WR, he’s so much more explosive than that.

Another playmaking WR could totally open up our offense. You can’t cover everyone. It’s two players.

At the end of the day, a lot of this is on Tua. If he plays well, we’ll be in the mix. If not it’s 8-10 wins and missing the playoffs again. Go for it now!!!!
