Dolphins 2022 Free Agency

Sorry Dolphins fans, this Free Agency thing has left me deflated and disappointed. To be fair, Free Agency isn’t over yet, but up to this point, I haven’t seen anything that to make me feel optimistic about our chances for the playoffs this season. It’s not about grabbing big names, if you know me, I’m not that provincial, but I’m very uninspired with what I’ve seen from Chris Grier and Co. as so far. We re-signed a bunch of players, and I’m thrilled we got a contract done with DE Emmanuel Ogbah. He was an absolute necessity, a huge part of our defense and having him along with Jaelan Phillips should be an even more dangerous combo this season as Phillips learns and grows. After Ogbah though, I feel like we almost got complacent. Plus, Ogbah was here already, we just managed to retain him. So where are the upgrades we desperately needed?

We got some feel good re-signs like Elandon Roberts, Sam Eguavoen, Brennan Scarlett and Duke Riley, but if I sure wouldn’t have minded instead of re-signing every single LB that was on our roster that maybe subtract 2 or 3 or 4 of those guys and get Bobby Wagner. Wagner would be an immediate upgrade over any and every LB we re-signed. I want to elevate, not levitate. It’s not like we had the best defensive unit in the NFL and just had to keep it intact. Far from it. We were a decent defense, better than average, although right in the middle of points allowed. At the moment, Bobby Wagner is still available. He’s such a quality individual, he would have to be one of the captains, a guy teammates would look up to. He would make our defense better, and while #55 Baker had a fine season again last year, he’d be ever better with Wagner, everyone would.

Time for the meat and potatoes. Ah yes, the O-line. So far we have Connor Williams, who is a a talented yet flawed player, not too unlike 4/5 of our O-line before he got here. He’s further along than our current crop perhaps with the exception of RG Robert Hunt. He did have a propensity for flags last season and that needs to be fixed. He’s a very good run blocker and fits what we want to do here. I still feel like Austin Jackson and Liam Eichenberg will be our LT and RT respectively. Unless of course we sign Terron Armstead, but I don’t see that happening. I still feel like we need an upgrade on the interior, specifically C. It’s possible that upgrade come via the draft in Tyler Linderbaum, but would be willing to trade up to get him?

We had a bunch of re-signs for position players too, Preston Williams returns for a show me season. Former Dolphins (and 49ers) RB Raheem Mostert also returns. We gave former Cardinals RB Chase Edmonds a nice 2 year contract. He does however scream RUNNING BACK BY COMMITTEE, and that’s fine, but we seem to pine for an upgrade every single season but it never seems to come. Besides that, I feel the need to point out that we have been just atrocious in our record of free agent running back signings, beyond awful really. Jordan Howard, Matt Breida (He was a trade), and Malcolm Brown. The production of those 3 probably doesn’t add up to what Myles Gaskin gave us last season. Now to the WR’s. Cedrick Wilson. He could be a decent player but upgrade? I mean big upgrade? Wilson played primarily on the slot but can play outside as well. He had two 100 yard games, but take into account that Dak Prescott threw for 4449 yards last season, not impressive. He was #4 in targets last year, behind Cee Dee Lamb, Amari Cooper, and Michael Gallup. He finished the season with 602 yards and 6 TD’s on 45 receptions. Not bad, but like most of the signings except Ogbah and Gesicki, is not bad what our anemic offense needs? It’s true that this draft is chock full of WR talent, and one of them will undoubtedly be available at #29, but then you kiss Tyler Linderbaum goodbye. My point is, unless we fix either the WR situation in FA, or the O-line in FA, it’s going to be difficult to expect both of those to be addressed properly via the draft with our current draft position. Do we trade away future assets, or players in order to do that? It’s possible.

We definitely upgraded our backup QB situation signing QB Teddy Bridgewater. I always liked Bridgewater, he’s a gamer. He’ll be a good guy for Tua to lean on. I like the FB signing of Alec Ingold although he is coming off an ACL tear November 16, 2021. He’s a team captain and a guy that will be a spark in the offense. We also signed former 49ers WR Trent Sherfield who is mostly a ST’s player. Remember, we lost WR Mack Hollins to the Raiders. If you’re looking for positives, OG Connor Williams is a very strong run blocker. FB Alec Ingold is also a strong run blocker but again, we need to add more talent on the O-line and in the RB corps. Chase Edmonds, Raheem Mostert, Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed and Gerrid Doaks. Which one of these guys does the opposing defense worry about running the ball? I’d like one guy that the defense thinks about before the game “Man, I really hate tackling that due, he’s physical”. That guy isn’t on our roster.

If you subtract the re-signs, you have to be underwhelmed by what we’ve done. I like the Connor Williams signings and while I have a La’el Collins chiffon robe that has never been worn, I don’t think I’ll get that opportunity. He’s probably going to the Bengals to win. Speaking of winning, the Bills signed Von Miller to a monster 6 year contract. Think we need to fix the O-line? Let’s just play in fantasy land for a moment and say La’el Collins doesn’t feel the love ($$$) from the Bengals and we somehow snatch him up. My guess would be the O-line would be as such:

LT Austin Jackson

LG Connor Williams

C Michael Deiter (Or Tyler Linderbaum?)

RG Michael Hunt

RT La’el Collins

That wouldn’t be bad, especially if you sub Linderbaum for Deiter. Back to the defense for a second. Now that we have every single LB we had last season after re-signing THREE, how about getting Bobby Wagner?

LDE Emmanuel Ogbah

NT Raekwon Davis

RE Christian Wilkins

WLB Andrew Van Ginkel

LILB Bobby Wagner

RILB Jerome Baker

SOLB Jaelan Phillips

CB Xavien Howard

CB Byron Jones

S Jevon Holland

S Brandon Jones

Doesn’t that look, and feel good? Seriously, give Bobby a nice front loaded contract and if his play declines after a couple of years, it won’t hurt at that time. It’s NOT about making a splash, that would legitimately be a big upgrade on defense. He’s such a smart, instinctive player and a high character, high motor individual. I would really like that.

Now for the bad? news . . . The WR corps.

DeVante Parker, Jaylen Waddle, Cedrick Wilson, Lynn Bowden Jr., Allen Hurns, Preston Williams, Trent Sherfield, River Cracraft, Cody Core and DeVonte Dedmon. Isaiah Ford is a Free Agent. Can you ever really expect DeVante Parker to play healthy for a full season? NO! I love to watch Parker when he’s healthy, he’s a game changer. Maybe that happens 5 or 6 games a season. Will Allen Hurns survive cutdowns? Probably not. Preston Williams is a DeVante Parker in clone healthwise, he can’t stay healthy either. In other words, it’s Waddle, Wilson and who????? I feel like our 1st and 2nd RD picks have to be used on C/WR/RB. But that’s THREE! We only have 2. Say we traded one of our future 1st RD picks from 2023, where we have two. We pick up Tyler Linderbaum at 29, then trade up to the next spot and take Jameson Williams and then with our next pick we take either Kenneth Walker or Breece Hall. Now you’re talking, right?! Don’t bet on it. There’s still a chance to improve this team, Free Agent C’s J.C. Tretter and Bradley Bozeman are available. Bobby Wagner is also out there. Make us smile, make us better!

Now find the best 5 OL. Coach McD is not fucking around and Grier did what he was looking for. Grier attended the Texas A&M pro day today knowing the contract was being worked out with his peeps doing their job. Sometimes we as fans don’t know what’s going on. 😉

  2. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I feel the contract for Armstead is in line with Ogbah – market value but not record setting. Well done Chris Grier who gets a lot of grief from the media and fans.

Schad is such a schmuck and a notable hater of Tua. Yeah, let’s forget all about Tua’s blindside, right? “No excuses”?

Last I recalled, Tua got his ribs shattered in game 2 of last season by his blindside protector. Signing Armstead (which I applaud… not sure I like the $$$, though) does NOT address the protection of Tua.

  5. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m just glad we didn’t think the offense was good enough as is. None of us know how it will pan out on the field, but coach McD and Grier have revamped it. I also don’t care about the salary cap. Lots of ways to make it work.

Keeping our defense intact was important at least for this fan. 🙂

  6. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Sorry Krishna, but Tua elevating his game is huge now. The team is giving him what he needs to succeed. Coach McD promised him as much. 🙂

Since entering the NFL in 2015, no running back with at least 200 carries has a better rushing average than Mostert’s 5.7.
    plus
In 84 career pass-blocking snaps, Mostert has been charged with just four pressures allowed (Pro Football Focus).

  14. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

#49ers Trent Williams on blocking for Raheem Mostert⤵️

“I like Raheem Mostert. I know a lot of people may not think that, but to me, he’s the new age Chris Johnson…”

  15. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

In 2020, Mostert had the first- and second-fastest recorded speeds of any player (as Williams mentioned). He clocked in at 23.09 miles per hour on an 80-yard touchdown run in Week 2, following up a 76-yard touchdown reception in the Niners season-opener when he registered a top speed of 22.73 miles per hour on that catch and run.

  16. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’d rather we signed a RT (La’El for $10M/per!) for Tua’s blindside, instead of a LT for the price we just paid Armstead.

For whatever it’s worth, we now have the most expensive non-blindside Tackle in the NFL… and even DeVante Parker doesn’t miss as many games as Armstead… and many fans want us to cut bait with DeVante ASAP for that very reason.

NEVERTHELESS… YES(!), signing Armstead makes our O-Line much better, if only on the left side. This will ABSOLUTELY help us… so long as he’s healthy.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m reminded of us signing Branden Albert a year or two late…

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I think Collins preferred Cincy due to their past year. I agree about Armstead but I think none of the other OT are comparable with Collins out. We’ll take the risk with an elite talent instead of just settling for an average one.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think you just hit the nail on the head, New Age. We lost out on RT Collins, wanted to make a splash, and took the best OT we could get.

  17. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

With 220 rushing yards and four scores in the 2019 NFC Championship game, only Eric Dickerson had more rushing yards in a single playoff game (248). For posterity, former Dolphin Lamar Smith’s 209-yard performance in 2000 is third all-time. Mostert’s four touchdowns in that game are tied for second in NFL playoff history (Ricky Watters with five in 1994, LaGarrette Blount with four in 2014).

  18. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Naples,

Man, you’re getting me HYPED UP for Mostert!!!

  19. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Ced Wilson’s prolific college career was matched by his work in the classroom. He was named to the Academic All-Mountain West team in 2016. Before earning All-American honors in junior college, Wilson was a quarterback of a 6A high school team who made it to the Tennessee state semifinals during Wilson’s senior season.

That makes it no surprise that Wilson has completed all five of his professional passing attempts for 111 yards, a touchdown and a perfect 158.3 passer rating.

  20. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Wilson finished fifth in the NFL among qualifying receivers with 18.4 yards per target on passes thrown 20-or-more yards.
His average of 6.2 yards after the catch tied for 10th among NFL receivers in 2021. The separation metrics help, but so does slipping four tackles on 45 catches, one every 11 receptions.

  21. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Wilson is primarily known for his separation. His average distance created between he and the nearest defender was 3.5 yards a clip last season, tied for 13th among wide receivers. For comparison, Cooper Kupp and Tyreek Hill finished just ahead of Wilson in this category at 3.6 average yards of separation.
Wilson is also sure-handed. He has just five career drops (6.5 percent drop rate) which helped him achieve a passer-rating-when-targeted of 116.2 last season.

  22. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

At the end of the day, at least we’re trying to upgrade the offense. Not much more you can do. Nobody knows what’s going to happen. But it couldn’t stay the same. We still have #29 and #50 to kick off the draft. We can also use 2023 draft capital to make a splash. Just saying! 😉

On paper, are we a better team than last year? I say yes! It still comes down to wins and losses. But right now it looks good.

The Dolphins see what the AFC West and other AFC teams are doing. You better compete with them or you’re once again on the outside looking in. The first order of business is competing with the Bills. They’ve been really active trying to upgrade and keep their team rolling. But that’s what it’s all about.

Tua has to be really good or it won’t work. It’s a QB driven league and we all know that. But the core of this team is better than last year as far as I’m concerned. Fins up! Lets roll!!! 🙂

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So long as we address the blindside RT position adequately (whether it be another FA signing, a draft selection, or battle of the current Tackles on our roster with McDaniel bringing out the very best in them), I’ll share in your optimism, Bro. 🙂

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The blind side is overrated in today’s modern game. The ball gets out so quickly. It’s not the old pro-set weak side LT – RT and TE strong side. The offense we’re going to run is based on a lot of movement, not a static pocket. The RPO shotgun will be an element of the offense, not a bread and butter 75% of the time like it was last year. Think about coach McDs philosophy. It’s totally different than our offense last year.

  23. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I would have preferred Collins to Armstead at 10 mil, but it is very possible Collins was going to choose Cincy over Miami unless we paid him something significantly higher.

And I honestly thought Armstead had a good chance to happen from the beginning. The Niners under Shanahan/ McDaniel have always had a top 5 player at LT. I think it’s part of the formula. Armstead was the player that fit that bill.

For me, FA was about 3 things:

    -Keep Gesicki and Ogbah.
-Resign enough players on defense to keep it intact.
-Sign enough new players on offense to significantly change the way it looks, including a required couple of guys on the oline.

We hit on all those. And we still have the draft with enough capital to also make a surprise move or two this year if we want to.

Sure, I have major concerns about Armstead staying healthy, do we have enough at WR, will our RB unit stay healthy, will the oline look better, will Tua progress, will the D be good without Flores, can McDaniel HC, and on and on, LOL.

We have a lot of questions going into the new season. That was going to be the case no matter what moves we made/ make. But I’ve seen enough so far in FA to be excited about the possibilities.

Let’s go out and have an awesome draft!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Every team has those issues. Injuries can happen at any time even for players who have never dealt with that. It only takes one time.

Think about the Jags drafting Travis Etienne going down as a rookie.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

You exacerbate the concern by signing a guy who has played 9 years and never played a full season vs signing a guy who has never been injured. Obviously the concern is higher for an oft injured guy.

We can almost guarantee he won’t play all season. What if it happens in December during a playoff run? Etc. I don’t dismiss his injuries as a “well it could happen anytime…”

My buddy and I have talked about it with the Niners for the last 5 years or so. They sign players with injury histories because they understand the risk. And they have some of the worst injury problems in the league every year.

But at the same time, they compete in the playoffs a lot of years too. So that is the possibility I see with signing a guy like Armstead. They are following a formula and I’ll take that.

  24. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    More speed:
It should come as no surprise that Keion Crossen is often the first man on the scene on kick coverage as he ran a 4.33 40-yard dash at his Pro Day in 2018. On that run, Crossen clocked a high speed of 24 miles per hour (calculated from the final 20 yards) to showcase his explosiveness.

Unsurprisingly, he tested off the charts in several other categories. He blazed a sterling three-cone time of 6.67 seconds, leaped 39.5 inches on the vert and 131 inches on the broad jump.

  25. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

“When he first got here, he was always known as the minister, the preacher. Everybody called him The Preacher,” said his teammate, Corey Holloway. “because Keion is very giving. He’s willing to give his last to somebody who needs it.”

  26. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

“Some of the leadership aspects, you could just tell from the beginning that Keion had what we as coaches call the ‘it’ factor,” Western Carolina Head Coach Mark Speir said.

  27. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Opposing quarterbacks targeted Crossen for a passer rating of just 83.2.

  28. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Guys,

We can STILL free up nearly $20M in cap space. So UNTIL Bobby Wagner gets signed elsewhere, I’m still keeping my fingers crossed! 😀

I DO realize it’s a pipedream at this point.

  29. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think getting Armstead to play LT is still great, even though Tua is a leftie.
Having The two new guys over on the left side means we can run plays to Tua’s preferred side with confidence. That’s important and a huge difference (improvement) over last year when Jackson and Liam did not put up a wall for Tua’s strong side so he could make the most of it. He had guys in his face almost every play.
Just imagine what Tua could do with a calm pocket to do his reads through.
    Plus
With all the misdirection and motion away from the real running lane that McDaniel scripts, the d never knows where the ball is going. if those new guys can run block to the left or seal the backside when we run to the right, that is also a huge improvement for our rushing game over what happened last year.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Naples, you get it. Everyone acts like a left-handed QB has no idea about his blind side. His strong side is the left side. The same way as right-handed QBs roll. Both tackles have to do their job. Then you have naked bootlegs and stuff like that.

Does anyone think coach McD and his coaches want to see Tua annihilated from the blind side?

Flores did a horrible job with the offense. He did help build a very good opportunistic defense.

  30. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I’m against signing the center Tretter and LB Bobby Wagner in FA.

Sorry, man. I 100% disagree with this post with no disrespect whatsoever. The way I see it, you’re asking McDaniel to do what we actually tried to do last year… it didn’t work.

McDaniel doesn’t play the way you just described above… our last year’s team played that way, thus limiting Tua.

You ARE right that McDaniel’s philosophy will be totally different than what we’d done last year.

I’ve tried to say this is not a big deal for months but nobody listens. It was all about Jesse Davis not even blocking his guy and the defender planting Tua into the ground. That can happen from anywhere.

  33. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Tim,

Both you and I (along with so many others) realize that when a new HC comes to town, the basics (the trenches) are generally reinforced.

McDaniel’s forte would seem to be the running game (run-blocking in the trenches), with a co-focus on protecting the QB. Short and sweet: the O-Line.

Let me pick your brain… who or what position do you foresee us selecting @ R1P29?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ve said it before. I trade up for a prospect we covet and even use 2023 draft capital to get better now than later by adding another prospect. Not saying we’ll do that, but I would.

We see lots of teams doing that. We’re not a 4-12 and 5-12 team. We’ve won 19 out of 33 games the last two seasons. Why not try to get better now, what are we waiting for?

The players we’ve signed are not all about the future. Why franchise Gesicki, re-sign Ogbah, sign Armstead, add a WR we like in Wilson, keep some core guys on defense and revamp the RB position? For what… a few years down the road? Does that make any sense to you?

Folks… we’re trying to win in 2022 even if you don’t think we’re there yet. This is not a 7-10 record is okay in McDaniel’s 1st season type thing, that would be a disappointment. He would say that was a failure. That’s not how anyone views this roster in the Dolphins building. We haven’t drafted yet either.

So we can’t go from 9-10 wins to 11-13?

We have to beat the Bills at least once.

We needed a RT more, but hard to argue we didn’t get a good deal, injuries aside

I can’t complain about what we’ve done in FA, all the key guys I wanted are back, we got 2 OL I asked for, 2 RBs a WR, 2 FBs, an elite ST speed cover guy, a very good backup QB, and we’re not done yet

I most certainly don’t know more about football than Coach McDaniel… he and Grier have a plan. We don’t know what that plan is as of yet, but that blindside RT position MUST be upgraded. It’s not a “can’t see the forest for the trees” matter, it MUST BE UPGRADED.

Yes, it IS a big deal, man.

M13, Armstead/Collins might be our strong side matchup that we can rely on in both the run and pass game. It always comes down to talented players man.

I know you’ve always despised Mike Shanahan, but his son Kyle and his coaching tree from the WCO principles are still very much alive. Coach McD is one of them. He got into coaching in 2005. It started with Mike Shanahan in Denver. It’s not like he just got into this a few years ago. This is his 18th year as a coach.

  40. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

What did most of us agree with this offseason? Add two proven vets on the OL? 😉

  41. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We just had a huge signing at a price we can work with, we shouldn’t be talking too much about what’s next or what we haven’t done

Wonder what the cap space looks like😉

They’re a little slow putting the new signings in

  42. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

When we sign a new player we have to take another off the top 51, if the salary is high enough

When we cut players, for example we have to add someone to the top 51, so saying we can clear 20m really needs to be adjusted roughly 1m less per player cut

  43. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We are trying to win. That’s all I care about. 🙂

  44. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

For me it’s time to focus on the draft.

Do we need a lot of players or a couple of game changers? Remember we had three all rookie team guys last year. Add two more of those this year and we can fuck with the Bengals. 😉

  45. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

My hope is we land a Center in the draft if Deiter can’t be that guy. Then add another prospect we feel makes us a better team. Maybe defense.

I don’t think our FA offseason has been good… I think it’s been excellent. What did we fuck up on? Who did we lose? We got better!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We have a good team, Tua is the key. It’s a QB driven league.

What I find interesting is nobody is supporting Brian Flores’ claims. No top executives have resigned and plenty of top black players have signed with us. Who is supporting him?

  46. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Edmonds, Mostert and Gaskin could be good stuff.

  47. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Mostert is the fastest player in the nfl.

So if we can resolve the Great Blindside Debate this will be a very successful offseason.

  49. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If you’re really wondering whether I’m happy about the Armstead signing, I am. It wasn’t the upgrade I expected, but it’s a clear upgrade regardless. Our O-line should be better this season. It could be much better if we can swing Linderbaum. There will be a fierce battle for the one spot left, RT and either Jackson, Eichenberg or Hunt will man that spot. The best man will get it, and we’ll have better depth with either Jackson or Eich as the swing man.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Honestly, our OL can’t be any worse! I really hope we can get Linderbaum. I would consider trading up a little to get him if need be. Maybe give up our third or a fourth to jump up a little. We need a good, young center so we aren’t paying in FA this season or next.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I would definitely trade up to get him. He’s a great prospect for what we need, a mobile C in a move scheme. All our linemen are going to be hauling ass, and although he’s slightly undersized, he’s perfect for doing just that.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Agreed. And I wonder if Applebaum knows if Zion can make the transition to C in the NFL. That would he plan B in the draft.

  53. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Saying we upgraded the o-line isn’t the big statement that some of you think it is. We could have signed Nick Mangold’s sister and still fell under the standard definition. The LT market this offseason wasn’t really great, so yes there are some positives to getting Armstead, but it’s not excellent, nor is it an A+. It’s a B-. Good, better than passing grade, but not top of the class. We could have had Collins for a late round pick and gotten the same grade though. I’m interested in the details of the contract, given that it’s 5 years, something we haven’t seen out of this F.O. since I don’t know when. Even Ogbah only got 4 years (really 2 when you look at the structure). So good job to Grier and McD for not hoping the young guys all of the sudden get it and leaving the line status quo.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

There’s 2 sides to everything though. Seemed to be like La’el wanted Cincy more than he wanted Miami

      • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

That was after he was released and had a choice. We could have traded a late round pick to Dallas and not allowed him to try the open market.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Maybe, but also possible we weren’t super interested in him, we preferred getting Terron. We’ll never know

      • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

our interest doesn’t change the fact that we had other options

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You assume we could’ve traded a late round pick for La’el, report out of Dallas was they weren’t giving him up for a late rd pick and would rather cut him

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Cowboys are going to get a lot more out of the compick than they could have out a trade. We would have to offer like a 3rd, or at least a 4th.

  54. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Phelon – You could be right, especially if they decide Hunt is the RT. Kindley may well be best suited to play RG. He better be in some serious shape though. This O-line will be running, I mean moving on almost every play, no stationary phone booth play on this line. Not sure if Kindley is athletic enough unless he got in some better shape.

  55. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

I’m stuck on Wyo’s post. The rest don’t matter.

  56. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

SB – I hear ya, but we have 2 young OT’s, highly rated prospects on the roster. I’ve repeated myself so many times, but I felt like we were going to upgrade the interior, and see if we could get these guys to play better. Now we’re looking at one spot at T for 2 guys, so there should be good competition. I prefer that to having brought in 2 T’s.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Yeah I was hoping we’d sign LG, C, but also sign a T to battle it out with the young guys and make them earn the spot. The offseason isn’t over yet. We still have the draft and the rest of Free Agency, so I’m still waiting to see how it all shakes out and if Nick Mangold’s sister is even on our radar.

  57. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

The Armstead deal has $43 million guaranteed; that is the only number that really matters in NFL contracts.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Getting that quality player at ~$11M per (Guaranteed) is awesome.
That’s what we’re paying Gesicki on the tag.
Is it possible a super star wanted to come to the Miami Dolphins?

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

They can walk away from the deal after three years if he’s not living up to his contract. He’s going to get banged up here and there- that’s his history. Hopefully he doesn’t sustain any major injuries where he misses a lot of time.

I’m much much happier with Armstead the person than I would’ve been with Collins the person.
I don’t like people who try to bribe their way past drug testing.
That reveals an inner character that will cheat instead of comply, and so if he’ll cheat on substance abuse, he’ll cheat on learning the playbook, on training and conditioning, on honesty in dealing with the coaches, etc. etc.
He’s shown his character, and it’s to take the easy way out, even if it means criminal activity.
Bribery is not a PED level transgression. Bribery’s a calculated, conscious crime.
I don’t want that sliming up my locker room and influencing my young guys.
    plus
I also think Armstead is a better fit to our offense than Collins would’ve been.
And Armstead’s talent was higher rated by the experts than Collins’s, not just by me.

  60. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

What I interpret that MF13 is saying in a nice way is that we still have Jesse Davis as our RT, which was the one player we most needed to replace on the whole team, IMHO.
As long as he is on our roster, there is the possibility that he beats out everybody, and we trot him out there in September to secure Tua’s blind side.
That would be a disaster in my mind that putting Terron out there at LT won’t fix.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I would say there is a zero percent chance Jesse Davis is our starting RT this season.

That’s good to hear. He is guaranteed $53.3 million on a $75 million contract. The. $87.5 million includes incentives, likely performance bonuses that he isn’t likely to hit because of his injuries. If he does hot them, then it will be well worth the extra money.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

MF was just talking yesterday about how we can clear close to 20 mil, minus the money Steve pointed out, so maybe 15 mil. That’s enough for this year if we middle/back load the contract.

I don’t think Hill has the production to command Adams money or even Amari money.
What did he make last year?
    3 yr $54M
All had to be earned due to his off field issues.
Can we find a 3- yr $60M contract somewhere?
Maybe more in years 2 and 3 to force him to not drop off his play?
That way the cap goes up to cover for us.
We could send them our first and 3rd and P Williams and Devante Parker
