Dolphins are ALL IN

I wish I could adequately share my excitement with all my friends and readers here. I hope by the time you finish reading you can feel it through my writing. It’s not that this team is the front runner for Super Bowl LVII, it’s that we’re actually in the running. It’s that our team has made a commitment this season acquiring assets to be a legitimate competitor in the AFC. Last week I was taking in all the moves and thinking to myself this team got a few nice players, a collection of adequate players but nothing exceptional. I felt we needed some top level talent. What a difference a week makes! We signed via Free Agency the top OT on the market, Terron Armstead formerly of the New Orleans Saints. Yes, he’s a LEFT TACKLE, and Tua is left handed, which means Armstead won’t be protecting Tua’s blindside. Doesn’t matter, we needed a high level player on the O-line and just thinking of Connor Williams and Terron Armstead on that left side is exciting. Both are excellent run blockers. Then the blockbuster dropped, and it happened so fast I couldn’t believe it. I’m getting rifled with texts from friends and fans of other teams letting me know that the Dolphins are in the running for WR Tyreek Hill. Who expected anything like that? BOOM! He’s here for the next 4 years for $120M. What???

The Miami Dolphins offense is going to be known as the LEGION OF ZOOM

So friends, as disappointed as I was last week, I couldn’t be more optimistic about our team. The totality of all the moves make it clear we wanted speed on the field, and with newly acquired Raheem Mostert, Tyreek Hill added to Jaylen Waddle, that’s some legit horsepower out there. You can read all the negatives about giving up all that draft capital and paying exorbitant amounts of money to a smallish WR, but F all those know nothings who write and say those things. The Raiders are brilliant for giving up loads of draft capital for Davante Adams and paying him, but the Dolphins are desperate. You could easily make the case that Tyreek Hill is as good or better than Davante Adams. Alright, so in reality, it all comes down to the prevalent belief that Tua just ain’t it, just isn’t good enough. I don’t think there’s a player in this league, possible league history who is judged as unfairly as Tua is. I can’t say whether he’s a top 10 talent at the QB position but please judge the man by what he had to play with. Worst O-line in football, a revolving door of injured receivers, no run game, and the proof of all that was how much worse and established NFL starter, Jacoby Brissett performed in Tua’s stead while he was injured. There seems to be no perspective at all when judging young Tua and I just hope with all my heart that this kid makes them all look stupid. For the most part, he can’t really win, because if he succeeds this season and the team wins, the new weapons will get the credit and Tua will just be a game manger surrounded by great players and a great HC. I can only pray they say that because we’ll be winning.

We all knew the offense was the unit that needed some TLC, and the Dolphins apparently agreed. While we managed to keep the defense intact, props to the Dolphins FO for making that happen, they really dug in to fix the offense. So just how does Tyreek Hill fit in with this offense. Just like in KC, just get him the damn ball. I don’t care if it’s a screen pass, a jet sweep, a 5 yard pass, 10 yard pass or a 50 yard bomb, just get him the ball and good things happen. He’s that dangerous receiver that absolutely must be accounted for at all times. You think Jaylen Waddle is excited? His 9.8 YPR is going to go up nicely with Hill in the lineup. You think Mike Gesicki is excited? BTW, both of those aforementioned receivers may see less targets, but I can almost guarantee you they will be making more big plays. Last year Will Fuller, AKA The Invisible Man was supposed to be the guy to take the top off the defense. That was the bottle rocket that went pffffffffffffffffft! It was such an unbalanced attack, it was the Penguin Show, Waddle getting 104 receptions with the next closest receiver being TE Mike Gesicki with 73.

The ball is going to be spread around a lot, and I’m sure WR Tyreek Hill will get his share of targets and receptions, as will Waddle and Gesicki, but remember all the RB’s we brought in here. First, Chase Edmonds, who’s averaged between 7-9 YPR, and our own Myles Gaskin who was one shy of 50 receptions. Raheem Mostert isn’t really used a receiver often but he’s so dangerous in space and finds angles and creases so quickly that he may get the ball more here in this offense. Ah, but keep in mind, we hired Mike McDaniel, run game coordinator. Mike loves to run, and although we don’t have a feature back per se, we have some guys that make big plays in Mostert, Edmonds and of course Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

OK, as Jen Psaki would say, let’s circle back to the O-line. Y’all know I felt we needed two quality guys, and I made it clear I wanted interior guys, expecting our talented young OT’s Austin Jackson and Liam Eichenberg to be reclamation projects of O-line Coach Matt Applebaum and Frank Smith. Instead, the Dolphins simply got the best OL available in Free Agency, LT Terron Armstead. Earlier and preceding the Armstead deal, the Dolphins picked up Connor Williams. Williams must be ecstatic that he’s going to be playing next to Terron Armstead. I don’t know if Michael Deiter is going to be our starting C, or if we look to the draft where we have significantly less capital, or possibly at post June 1st cuts for our new center. The right side of the line has yet to be determined but most definitely includes OL Robert Hunt. Whether he remains inside at RG or moves out to RT is still up in the air. One thing we know for certain, in possibly a symbolic move, is that Jesse Davis will NOT be the RT in 2022. If it were me, I’d leave Hunt at RG where he’s flourished, and make an open competition between young tackles Austin Jackson, Liam Eichenberg, Larnel Coleman and Robert Jones. Or as some have speculated here, maybe big man Solomon Kindley moves to RG and Robert Hunt is the new RT. All possible, but my thinking is that Solomon would have to be in tip top shape to play in this athletic offensive line scheme, where lots of movement is the plan. You have to move to fill a hole or gap, and you can’t be tardy or the play is blown up. I think Austin Jackson has a good shot and as I type that I can see M13 cringing about Jackson on Tua’s blind side. Eichenberg had mentioned last season he’s very comfortable at RT, so this competition should be a good one, and I feel we have enough knowledge there now with Applebaum at the helm, and with a couple of other guys with O-line experience to lean on.

Have we now increased the talent level on this team? CHECK! Have we brought in some game changers, playmakers? CHECK! Have we addressed the O-line? CHECK! The only negative I can muster right now is that I probably won’t watch Day 1 and 2 of the 2022 NFL Draft. It’s usually one of my favorites, until it actually happens and then most times I’m grumbling WTF under my breath, or actually screaming it. We still own picks #102 (RD3), pick #125 (RD4), pick #158 (RD5) and pick #225 (RD7). If we decide to look for competition at C via the draft, OL Cole Strange could be an option. Zion Johnson struggles to move in space so although he has some pop in his blocks, my thought is we’ll be looking for a more athletic mover like Strange, who has played mostly OG, and has only practiced snapping and hasn’t actually played C. He would be a guy that couldn’t take over immediately, but perhaps a year or two later. We could grab in an inside LB and I know most of you here love Leo Chenal. The big backer may not make it to pick #102 but I wouldn’t mind it if he ended up here if he did. We could also look at RB but I think the top 2, Hall and Walker will be gone, so we’ll be looking at some lower tier players. If we’re looking for a bigger back with a tough running style to complement all the smaller, faster guys, Zamir White is that type of guy.

Oh, back to that defense. So we basically re-signed everyone, the defense comes back intact, including the depth. ILB seems to be the spot I’d choose for an upgrade, I love our D-line and and I don’t think our LB is an issue, but I’d love another playmaker next to Baker inside. Chanel is a big, muscular thumper who can motor, but he’s not a good cover LB at this juncture, which means he probably won’t be. As you all know, I’d love Bobby Wagner, but I feel like our cap space is getting tight, but there always seems to be ways to manipulate that and make things work. Wilkins, Davis, Ogbah, Van Ginkel, Wagner, Baker and Phillips make up quite the front 7. Maybe Wagner will see what we’re building and more inclined to join at a friendlier price. Roberts is a fine 2 down LB, and he’s made some big plays so I don’t consider it a need, more a want. Despite trading away lots of draft capital, we’re not done building, we still have some free agency and the draft, and then after the draft the post June 1st cut downs, which always nets some choice players. Enjoy the build, I know I am!

We may need all the drafts picks we can beg, borrow or steal to replace Tua if he doesn’t show he’s the guy. If they are confident he already is that…then it doesn’t matter as much. I still don’t like trading away high draft picks. Fantasy and hope aside, I think it’s a far stretch to think a team who hasn’t even been a consistent playoff participant is a SB contending team. I don’t get the need to trade away a bunch of picks in the hopes of competing for one this year. This team hasn’t proven jack yet.

It’s not just about this season, but we didn’t make these moves to not go for it this year. Any player we trade up for will still be on the team in 2023.

If it’s not about this season why are you trading a 1st round talent for a second?

I want the better talent, I’d take Phillips over some guy taken in the second

  4. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I like the idea of keeping the 2023 picks so we have the ammo to switch out the QB if we need to while keeping the team we’ve built intact, but channeling my inner Tim, if the team sees a prospect they really want and are good giving up the picks, I’m pretty ok with that too.

I like where we are as a team and the moves our FO has made this offseason, so adding anther piece they like is still a win and kinda just reinforces their stated belief in Tua as well.

  5. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We have a new coach and some new studs, we won’t know what else we’ll need until this team plays a season, if we trade too much of next year’s picks it gives us less flexibility to fill those needs

Nah, he’s coming to the Dolphins on his own next year. Ross is going to give him the team and the city has already started working on his palace and adjoining harem and bathhouse.

    Kong,
Yeah, as I’ve said before, I can see both sides of the trade up scenario. These things are always debatable. Nobody’s wrong on it. Bottom line for me is just get good players, and everything will work itself out sooner or later. It’s all about improving the roster.

Bookman, the way Armstead talks about Frank Smith makes me feel confident there is a new level of coaching here. He hasn’t worked yet with our new OL coach Matt Applebaum but Smith being a former OL coach and now our OC under coach McD and what he is looking to do, it seems to be the right mix along with Jon Embree as Assistant HC/Tight Ends.

  15. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    From Omar

The Brandon Marshall trade the Miami Dolphins pulled off in 2010 taught me one rule about the NFL, it’s that it’s irresponsible to trade draft capital for a player and then sign that Pro Bowl caliber player to a record-setting contract.

Big money and early draft picks are too much for one player.

But if you’ll allow me, I’d like to make an amendment to that rule, which is that if the player is on a Hall of Fame trajectory, like Tyreek Hill is, exceptions should be made.

I agree with this, and have always said, why pay and have to compensate its the FA era

The exception for me is his greatness, by how he changes an O and the cap going way up next year

Barry Jackson explains it well. This idea that Tua has been holding this team back is a bunch of nonsense. Should he play better with the players we’ve added? Of course!!! Isn’t that what it’s all about, surrounding your QB with talent? When did that become a new thing?

  19. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You can see our new offense coming from a mile away. The run game being a staple, then quick throws to our speed playmakers who can pick up YAC. One in awhile a guy will be open deep and we’ll hit on some of them too. But that’s not the staple of the offense.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

When you can rush for 3-5 and then pickup 6-10 in the pass game on a regular basis, you control the game on offense. The big plays come off of that.

When you rush for -2 to 2-3 and then pickup 6-10 in the pass game here and there, you punt.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They created a dynasty in NE using that style

Tua can do that too, with some playmakers and blocking around him, but he can’t do it by himself

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. People act like if Tua can’t throw 50+ yard bomb TDs on a regular basis he’s a weak link. It’s really silly what the media does to Tua. As if he’s the only QB that needs blocking, a run game and playmakers. LOL

We’ve done A LOT already this year in a HC’s virgin season, now it’s time to evaluate what we’ve got instead of potentially throwing good $$$/picks after bad.

We may very well need our current 2023 draft capital to fix anything that didn’t go as expected in 2022. There will be bumps in the road and… significant injuries.

We traded Jakeem Grant for a 6th to the Bears and that replaces the 6th we traded in the Hill deal. When you look at it, all of that draft capital we acquired, now we’re seeing what you can do with it.

The Giants are reportedly looking to trade their #5 or #7 pick because of cap issues. If we sent them both our 1st round picks in 2023 – most likely not high picks being us and SF in 2022, I would do it for another top OL. There are good OL early in this draft.

A lot of you say we’re not ready for a championship. The reason is because we didn’t go all in. The core of this team has been drafted. The recent FA and big Hill trade shows you that this franchise would like to win sooner than later.

You’re all worried about if this approach doesn’t work, we need the picks to start over. Like Bookman said not long ago, we know how to do that. What the fuck are you worried about? Winning 6-10 games and missing the playoffs for the next 10 years? LOL

But what we’ve done so far is not all in? You want Brady/Watson because you think they will guarantee a SB?

I don’t get it….sorry. We don’t even know what we have so let’s go get more….sounds like poor judgment, but what do I know….lol

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

LOL – Title of this article is “Dolphins are all in”. My take is that it’s not the same old let’s build the team for the next few years and hope that we can compete. This is different, they have a window of opportunity in which they are operating in to try and win in this season or the next 2. You don’t trade multiple picks (future assets) for a WR like Tyreek Hill unless you feel like he’s a player that puts you over the top and soon. Paying LT Terron Armstead top money is another indicator. It’s just a shift in the timetable. Teams always try to win but now the Dolphins are artificially creating a window in which they feel they can compete to win in.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We jumped the gun on the massive increase to the 2023 salary cap, as I hoped we would, wait a year and the Hill contract will look like chump change

With that said, there is no 1-3 year window, it’s an open window, so why give away a 2023 1st, when doing so really isn’t going to accomplish much?

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I agree with this sentiment. I think we are already all in, I would not trade any future picks for this years team. I would be pissed if we traded Parker PLUS two picks, including one of next years firsts for Linderbaum, as Tim proposes above.

I would much rather make a draft day trade with Parker and/or a 4th to move up in the 3rd to grab Chanel.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think the feeling is that Linderbaum is a generational player at C. He could be an all-pro for most of his career. Chenal would probably have a tough time beating our Elandon Roberts. They’re kind of the same type of player. Good run stoppers who aren’t coverage guys.

We still have options via Free Agency to bolster this team where we don’t need to give up more draft picks. We could have had Bozeman at C for 3 million and Tretter is still out there. I’m not sure the team is wanting to go that route though unless they are waiting for other cuts to happen. I think if they wanted one of the centers on the market they would have pulled the trigger by now. Although I still think they need to being throwing more talent at this line. Armstead playing a full season would a first, so we basically have Connor Williams and all the guys from last year who weren’t getting it done to count on.
I also wouldn’t be looking to trade Devante. Right now WR is finally a strength. Let Devante play limited snaps and keep him healthy for the season. I can see how the trade is appealing. I just wouldn’t do it when there’s no need for it.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Yeah, that’s why I said, if the team wanted to go that route they would have pulled the trigger by now. That doesn’t mean it’s the right or best decision. We still have some time and the draft to upgrade this roster though. I’d be concerned if we decided to go into the season without further addressing the roster in FA though.

  54. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I really think we need to keep Parker.
Unless Philly hands us a naked 1st for Devante, I’d keep him.
I think he has some important chemistry with Tua.
I’ve said it before, but the way those two work the back shoulder throws at the sideline is deadly to a defense.
If they just convert 2 third downs a game that way, it’s worth it.
Parker is such a different kind of weapon than Waddle and Hill.
Why depend on small track stars alone?
What if some team figures out how to play them?
Then Parker leaks open for 14 down the left (Tua’s arm side) sideline and boom,
the defense is punished for overloading coverage on the speed twins.
Parker also catches 50/50 balls and short redzone, back of the EZ tight window balls really well.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree and have said, don’t want to trade him for anything less than a 2nd

We need Armstead to be healthy for the playoffs and maybe that big playoff deciding game like we’ve had the past 2 seasons, and against the Bills

  56. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Dieter was a #78 pick overall out of Wisconsin, which is a well known OL factory.
He only allowed 5 sacks his entire time in college, against the Big 10 schedule.
He was first team Big 10 and 2nd team All American.
He was 1st team all state and OL of the yr in Ohio as a sr in high school.
That’s a big, football crazy state.
He’s 6’6 310, so he’s no fatass. Maybe he can move well enough to fit for McDaniel.
This guy is no UDFA over achiever.
    He has credentials.
He has started 23 and appeared in 40 NFL games.
Last year he gave up only 1 sack and 3 pressures. How is that not good enough?
His PFF rating was only 60, but we all know there was no coaching, no real scheme, and no vet leadership with a rook and 2 2nd yr guys on the line with him.
To replace him, I’d want a first rounder or probowler, no less, or you are just churning for nothing and wasting assets to boot.

The downside is that Zeurlein says his weaknesses are
      * Mechanical second-level climbs
      * Issues adjusting and connecting in space limit effectiveness as move blocker
      * Surrenders positioning and gives some ground to bull-rush
      * Lacking lateral foot quickness to mirror quickness and counters

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

It’s hard to give up sacks and pressures when the QB is getting the ball out lightning quick, so his stats are going to look better than a QB who takes their time in the pocket. Center is the second most important position on the offense IMO. If we want to win a championship, we need better, not just good enough. We could at least bring in competition for the guy. Who else do we have at center? Let him prove his worth to earn the starting spot or become a quality backup for us.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I know just what you mean. Your analysis is correct.
Just think losing Parker or a 2023 First is worse than the amount of improvement we’d get replacing Dieter.

  63. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

… getting Tretter would be fine with me. Seems to be a class act.
He’s a vet so that would help our OL
but comes with injuries so he could be (relatively) cheap.
He and Dieter could swap in and out all year to keep both fresh and save both for a SB run.
It’s a 17 game year and then the PO. We can’t face that with only one Center.
So we get 2-3 years of part time help from Tretter and extend Dieter’s career.
    Dieter’s only 25 yo.

I think Parker is expendable now regardless of whether or not we seek to trade him. I don’t think he plays into the equation of upgrading our OL. The big question is do we want Lindenbaum and if we do then I think we have to give up one of next year’s number ones.

says that with Tyreek Hill, Tua Tagovailoa becomes a top-12 QB in the NFL 👀

“The Miami Dolphins with Tua and now with Tyreek Hill could become basketball on grass.”

I believe it’s true, the only thing I’d question is using stats to prove a QB is top 12

We’ll be a 50/50 run pass team, so the passing stats won’t look video gamish, the proof will be in the success of the O/team

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I expect us to run more too

But I think Orlovsky makes a good point
Those short mid range passes with deadly accuracy to Hill are always likely to explode

And he will run reverses and screens too

Those passing stats are not critical

But we may be averaging closer to 27 ppg instead of 20 ppg

Tua will be able to dramatically improve in TDs bc the scoring opportunities will be there

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

And when we win 12 games they’ll still call Tua a game manager, which hopefully sticks, so when it’s time to pay him he won’t break the bank

    Hunter Long’s college highlights

He was most dangerous sneaking off the line during play action, but usually he went down at first contact. If he had a head of steam after the catch, he was able to outrun guys taking bad angles. He had good concentration making catches with guys on him or in traffic. He looks like a good fit for what we want to do offense using PA or those boots/waggles. Very useful in short yardage and in the redzone. I don’t foresee him being a Kittle type, but a better receiving version of Smythe. I wasn’t impressed with his blocking, but he was a rookie and most rookie tight ends aren’t great at blocking. He has a nice base skillset that can be used.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He needs to be coached up

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

His blocking was atrocious! He was the worst TE run blocker on the team. Was real slow getting to his spot. He needs a lot of work in that regard. He does have the upside. He just needs to play angry like Jackson does.

Steve is right, he needs to be coached up. We have that so we should see a jump from him now that he is healthy.

  73. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Watching 49ers games, especially the NFC Championship game, when Mostert ran wild, noticed they had to get real creative in their running plays, since the box was stacked

This creativity is something I’d expect MM to thrive with, Hill in motion takes the handoff, then a few plays later Waddle in motion takes a shovel pass, then either in motion and gets a quick screen…

  74. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Our points per game actually went down from 25 to 20 from 2020 to 2021.
Our victory total went down as well,

And our winning percentage went way down
    as 9-8 is only .529 whereas 10-6 is a much better .625.
    … …
I see no reason why this offense cannot score at least 3 TDs and a FG per game.
That’s 24ppg, again below our own 2020 mark.
If we can average 3 TDs and 2 FGs, that is 27 ppg. That’s 5 scoring drives every game, though.
That’s hard to do as an average,
since some games tend to be a “defensive struggle” type game to offset the shootout type games.

The world was a much simpler place when you got smacked in the mouth for talking about some ones wife!

So Will Smith is okay with his wife sleeping with other men…literally okaying a guy sleeping with her…but not with a guy making a joke about her? And then he sucker slaps the dude and cries about it later to get sympathy? God, I love Hollywood shit. I hope this starts a trend of all of them slapping the shit out of each other. Good stuff.

    Rock,

I basically agree with everything you said. Violence is the last resort of the incompetent, and even though I get defending your wife in certain situations and in certain ways, that was just flat out wrong IMO. The Oscars has a long history of the host roasting the people in the audience and sometimes those jokes fall really flat or push boundaries.

As a matter of fact, I remember when Seth McFarland hosted and took jabs at Ben Affleck, who really didn’t take kindly to it, Affleck when he got his chance on stage later in the show took shots at how badly the show was going for McFarland. That is the appropriate way to respond in that kind of situation, history or no history.

I’m also guessing he was kinda laughing at first because he didn’t get that Rock was making a joke adjacent to her alopecia because he’s a numbskull and it took a moment to set in.

I also think there is no way that was staged because what kind of person would let himself be slapped like that in front of millions of people, not to mention you could see he was a little shook and he kind of screwed up the next category announcement. But overall, I think Rock handled it well and he was the one who comported himself with dignity.

I kind of disagree. A little thoughtful, well applied violence can cure a lot problems.

I thought that way when I was younger. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve just never really found violence to be a necessary course of action except to counter other violence.

Now it’s, I don’t know if Tyreek can do it with Tua

He was great with Alex Smith, so…

It’s funny, I heard on NFLN someone said Hill no longer has Mahomes. Usually they say the QB no longer has a playmaker, not the other way around. Like Aaron Rogers no longer has Davante Adams. There always has to be some shade throwing on Tua. It’s getting really annoying.

      Fresh start, good for him

Before he was a starter last year, he was a versatile member of the OL

He’s not very talented, but players willing to do whatever job they get assigned are valuable

I didn’t watch the oscars. I was doing my taxes….lol

    I read about this morning

I don’t know I hear a lot of weird stuff about will Smith and jada Pickett marriage. Will Smith looked like some one who took offense to a very minor jab bc it’s such a sensicitve relationship right now. Maybe that’s why he didn’t laugh it off 🤷‍♂️

    It was weird

Maybe there was a fight between rock and Smith before about his wife 🤷‍♂️

    Maybe it was staged 🤷‍♂️

It was just an odd and inappropriate reaction. Everyone thought it was a joke for a minute
