Dolphins will be competitive in AFC in 2022

So many moves have been made, and in general, the prevailing thought at this time is that the Dolphins are in a good place. We’ve left behind the ugliness of the split between the Miami Dolphins and former Head Coach Brian Flores and the accusations levied against owner Stephen Ross. I feel like all that ugliness has been left behind, and the negative slant that was hanging on the Dolphins organization has craftily been removed and replaced by a hefty dose of optimism. 3 months and change have passed since Brian Flores was let go and to me it’s startling how much this Dolphins front office has done to change the entire appearance of our team, and organization as well. I feel a sense that the Dolphins are in good hands, both with GM Chris Grier and his Head Coach Mike McDaniel. Sure, they used a fair amount of media clips to pump up new HC Mike McDaniel and his crucial impending relationship with QB Tua Tagovailoa. They seem to have finally committed to the young QB who has always deserved that from the get-go yet for some reason the Dolphins brass chose not to. I believe that the new tact will enable Tua to be better at his job, of course in addition to all the new faces who will now be wearing aqua, white and orange. The entire dynamic of the team has changed, and will likely continue to change until the season begins. As my last article said, they’re all in, and there will be additional pieces, possibly importance pieces that will be added to give this team what it needs to compete with the likes of many improved AFC teams such as the Bills, Raiders, Broncos, Colts and others.

Looking at the roster now, it seems so much more complete, the gaping holes are now gone. I still believe they’re not finished with the O-line and help may come still from free agency or via the draft, or even after June 1st cuts. The good thing is we aren’t desperate now at any position on the line. We have our LT and LG and probably our RG, and possibly our center too in 4th year C Michael Deiter. We’ve all discussed C prospect Tyler Linderbaum who is the top C prospect in the ’22 NFL Draft. I think the key issue is does the FO see Linderbaum as an immediate upgrade to our current C? If not, we may look elsewhere for a C or just stay with Deiter. Keep in perspective the O-line is a unit, and when everyone else around you is better, you’re better too.

As of now, the Dolphins first draft pick will be late RD 3, pick #102. That pick can still net a starter, or we may choose to use either a player or players, or future and current draft capital to move up to acquire a special player. The latter would not surprise me considering we’re now operating in a window of time where we have in order to be competitive. That window can always change, but right now it looks to be a 2 year window, which in turn would lead me to believe we’re looking for players to make an impact now, not 3 years from now. While some of us think C is the big issue, Naples wisely pointed out our depth at DE is thin. We re-signed Emmanuel Ogbah which was critical, but there’s really no one behind him at this time. Zach Seiler was a great pickup but he plays on the other side. Daeshon Hall who has played a total of 75 snaps at DE in 3 seasons is what we got. I think Naples has an excellent point that if Ogbah goes down, we’re in trouble. I love CB Nik Needham, but I’m not sure I’d want Needham to be starting if either X or Jones went down. We do have reclamation project #9 in Noah Igbinoghene as well, but he hasn’t given any indication he’s ready for prime time yet either. Do we finally draft a RB? It’s been a while since we invested early on a ballcarrier, Kalen Ballage was a 4th RD pick in ’18, (#131). We took newly acquired RB Chase Edmonds’ RB mate in ARZ Kenyan Drake in RD 3 (#76) in 2016. There’s no immediate need for a RB unless they wanted a bigger back, and don’t feel that last year’s 7th RD pick Gerrid Doaks is the answer. We have a lot of lightning in our RB stable but no thunder.

The new look Miami offense is no doubt more impressive than what it was a month ago. The O-line has been addressed and now we have one of the most dynamic WR’s in the sport. Tyreek does it all, and don’t for a moment underestimate his potential as a return man on special teams. He will be getting lots of touches in this offense, some behind the LOS or at the LOS and hopefully a bunch downfield as well. No matter what though, Hill is a player that requires the other teams full attention, he must be accounted for each and every play. Having a player like that makes things easier for guys like Jaylen Waddle, who received plenty of attention last season, and rightfully so. Add in Cedrick Wilson and a few of the guys in the backfield who will be used as receivers out of the backfield or on the LOS such as Chase Edmonds, Raheem Mostert and Myles Gaskin. I just can’t help thinking this will not be the stagnant, toothless offense we watched all too many times last season. Hey! We actually added a FB too! FB Alec Ingold will bring some physicality to the offense as well.

On the defensive side of the ball we did all we could to bring it all back intact, and succeeded. We will have all our starters and many of the same depth players as well throughout the defense. This was a good defense, maybe even just below a great defense that unfortunately had to carry the team on many occasions. A better offensive output this season I believe will lead to better things out of our defense. If the offense can run more plays and put a lot more points on the board weekly, our defense will have the advantage of the opposing offense being on their heels a bit trying to keep up. That usually allows for a more aggressive defense, and we’re a pretty aggressive unit anyway. We should also continue to see growth for 2 budding stars in DE/OLB Jaelan Phillips and S Jevon Holland. Safety Brandon Jones is another. DE Christian Wilkins made the leap to a high level last season. No Dolphins defender had as well rounded a season as Wilkins, contributing 89 combined tackles, 4.5 sacks, 13 QB hits, leading the team with 10 TFL, 1 FF and 1 FR. That’s NFL elite right there. #55, Jerome Baker had another great season leading the team with 92 tackles. Unfortunately, Bobby Wagner who had nearly twice that many tackles and would have looked great in aqua and orange is headed to the LA Rams and another chance at a SB berth in the NFC. I don’t honestly know if we were interested in Wagner, but I was!

I guess if you want to look for a glaring hole, look no further than P, because we don’t have one. Last year’s punter Michael Palardy was here on a 1 year deal so we’ll be looking. Some here have already fallen in love with P prospect Matt Araiza, the highest rated special teamer in the draft at 6.09. I can only imagine young Stanger dreaming of his favorite new player! Penn St. Punter Jordan Stout is right behind Araiza at 5.99. It’s possible we use a pick on a P, or we may just fill that spot in FA. Palardy remains unsigned after an uneven year last year.

Former Clemson Tiger and budding NFL star Christian Wilkins broke the NFL record for most tackles by a defensive tackle in one season.

    Naples,

Man, you continue to impress me (I think ALL of us) with the stats and knowledge you bring to this site. Your contributions are most appreciated, sir!

    Page turn.
I remember some NTs back in the day having over 100 tackles or close to it. Ted Washington had 92 in 1996. But it doesn’t matter. Wilkins is a very active and underrated player. He’s been my avi since he was drafted.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I can (along with many others) can vouch for you on your avi.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Huh… I had two cans in there. Toucan Sam.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I haven’t changed it since I chose it after he was drafted. For me he represented the rebuild and a new direction and I think his high character and play still represents that.

  4. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Regarding Christian Wilkins… HELL YEAH! I think he’s earned himself not only a 5th-year option, but perhaps a new contract.

  5. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Deiter is the only Center on our team. No doubt we have to do something there unless someone already on the team is going to start working there. I still see C being a position we have to add.

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If we utilize a FB on some plays and it seems we will, let’s say this is our pro set.
    WR Hill and Waddle
    TE Smythe
    FB Ingold
    RB Edmonds/Mostert/Gaskin

You have to respect the speed of the two WRs. 8 in the box is dangerous for opposing defenses. They’re going Cover 3? If we get teams into 7-4 Cover 2 we can run anything. Then of course we go 3 and 4 WR with Gesicki involved. What we did on offense in the offseason was to create a lot of mismatches.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Great….hopefully, the OL does their part, too! It starts there, imo.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Of course it starts on the OL. But a FB and TE to max protect on a play-action fake to the RB and Hill and Waddle stretching the field, with the RB, TE and FB as a check down or to set up a screen. That’s what speed does to a defense.

If Waddle runs a zigzag post and Hill runs a go route on the other side, that deep safety has to pick one. We can take teams out of 8 in the box with that speed threat. They can’t blitz and overwhelm us all day long which is what teams did to us last year and years prior. They only feared Waddle and took their chances with everyone else.

We added one of the most explosive players in the league in Hill. It’s almost like we’re downplaying his presence. It’s a big deal. 🙂

  8. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Oh and because of page turn on Wilkins….just gonna say, been a fan since day 1.

  9. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The BIGGEST question for me would be: how early do we draft a Punter?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      R3P38/102
      R4P20/125
      R7P3/225
      R7P26/248

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Seems to me the ‘sweet spot’ would be @ R4P20.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Just me: I’m drafting Matt Araiza no later than R4P20. And if he goes before that, we’ve got PSU’s Jordan Stout (hey, Brian!) to fall back on.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

        Araiza > Stout
        Why?
Araiza doubles as a kicker who can make 50+ yard FGs and who is fearless as a tackler on STs.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Based on what we’ve done building through the draft for 3 years and then FA, trades and cap to make moves this year, what do we have to do? I could see us drafting C and P 3rd and 4th. Who are we drafting that will beat out a position player other than OL and P?

I’m not worried about ILB. Baker is the 3 down LB and Roberts can be that hammer. Teams play 3 WR most of the time. ILB is like FB. Once in awhile.

  10. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Just remember our 3rd is like a 4th at 102. The norm would be 96 at the end of the 3rd. I’d draft a Punter with our 3rd. There are two really good prospects in Araiza and Stout. Some of us like to talk about holes. Punter is a hole, we don’t have one. LOL

Do you want to pay a JPP 10+M to play a few plays?

We have so many sub packages, that some guys already aren’t getting enough plays

At least it keeps them fresh, it’s when we get stuck and over play guys, that we get in trouble

I suppose a 5m or so contract wouldn’t be horrible for one of these past rush specialists

IDK, maybe it’s a good idea, can’t really have too many good past rushers

  19. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Tim, Baker plays OLB for us since about mid-season last year.

  20. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Seriously, if we are talking about trading next year’s picks for a chance on a rookie, maybe we should use whatever resources we have to get a Pernell McPhee (just to pick a somewhat wild example) or a Jerry Hughes.
What if we took Ogbah out for a breather and put in Carlos Dunlap, and he knew to give 110% to make a splash play for that moment and then go rest up for a half hour.
He can still beat most RTs just on knowledge alone. (for one to five plays)

I won’t rail against the front office if they do it, but I don’t think there is such a thing as a generational punter. You just don’t draft punters in the 3rd or 4th rounds. They might as it is a hole in our roster now, but I just don’t see it.

Sure, if someone is there in the 7th, but you don’t have to reach

I thought Morestead retired. We should sign him. He still can boom it and I remember he used to do kickoffs for the Saints because he had a stronger leg than the kicker. Trying to think of that FG kicker for the Saints but can’t remember.

Not to mention, HOT WIFE ALERT!

    Sign him!

Morstead spent the first 12 seasons of his NFL career with the Saints, making one Pro Bowl, before splitting time between the New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons in 2021. During last season, he averaged 47.2 yards per attempt, his highest mark since 2016 and higher than any season in Palardy’s career.

The 36-year-old also finished with the seventh-highest net average (42 yards) of any punter in 2021.

  27. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

NHL and their horrible pts system makes it very had to play catchup

How you can have a system where 2 pts are awarded for a win, but…if the game goes into OT the losing team gets 1 pt and the winning team still gets 2 pts?

When teams in front of you play, you might think great, someone has to lose, then it goes to OT

  28. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Wow, the Bills got Diggs for 6 years at 17.3 mil per yr, 70 mil guaranteed. Considering WR contracts right now, that’s a steal.

By comparison, we got Hill for 5 years at 25 mil per yr, 72 mil guaranteed.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Actually, it’s probably more than that. I didn’t take into account whatever he’s still got coming for these 2 years. Hopefully it’s closer to that 25 mil mark.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s all in how you look at it, and it’s not the same, when you have an existing player and when you have a new player

The year to year terms don’t show up yet on Sportrac, but just at face value it’s 24m per year extension, which by signing now seems like a good deal comparatively

He could have a non guaranteed last year, where a lot more than the avg is due, like Hill has

So for an existing player it really isn’t accurate to avg his old contract years with his new to give him something like 17m, because he already had that contract with the low figures, with a new player like Hill you didn’t have him before, so the entire contract avg is accurate

I think teams are trying to get a jump on the inflated contracts we’re going to see next year

  30. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I know posting all those long lists of names is clumsy and overwhelming, but it’s just to jog us out of our thinking of Miami as being in “rebuilding mode.”
We need to change our collective mindset from the blow it up, tear it down and start over modality that I at least was in for several years.
    … …
Like a couple guys on here keep saying, we are now in the “all in” phase. The “win now” phase.
Dare I say the “Go for the Super Bowl” phase.
    … …
This is not the time to be timid … smart fiscally, still, yes, but now is the time to sign the best LT in FA (done), a generational TD machine (done), and the fastest skill guys you can find (done).
    … …
This is different also because the teams that go out and get a Melvin Ingram or a Von Miller, even if they have lost a step, those teams win SBs.
    … …
Even though some of you scoff at talk of SB for Miami,
    saying it is premature,
    I guarantee that
it will not happen if we don’t talk about it.
The FO cannot conduct business as usual.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s rare to go from not making the playoffs for several years to winning the SB, sure it happens and can happen to us, but if you put all your eggs in that basket and don’t win it, you take a step back, before moving forward

In my estimation it would be foolish to do it this year

  31. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I understand what Steve and others are saying about not ready to commit to a SB run, but we’ve built this team the right way. We are still a very young team in many positions, but with experience where it matters most (CB and LT), we have a franchise QB, we have legitimate stars at every position group, we have a HC with SB history and yet a fresh plan that the league does not already know how to beat.
    … …
If we just had a Punter, we’d be SB ready.

  32. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Concerning the “all your eggs in one basket” concept.
If we had gone out and gotten say Tyreek before building up the roster, then that would be an example of that. Or how we misjudged the Suh effect back then, where the rest of the team could not do their part, and Suh was wasted.
    Or the Mike Wallace fiasco.
But Hill is not the only WR threat we have. We also have the all time record rookie WR.
We have the CB with the most INTs since he entered the league.
We have a DT with maybe the most tackles ever.
We have a statistically top 5 TE.
We have the certified fastest RB in the league.
We have first and second round draft picks all over the roster.
We have 2 winning records in a row.
We swept the patsies last year.
    … …
We are not trying to go from nowhere to the SB, although Cincy did that last year, so it can be done.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Cin had a QB, that put his team on his back, can Tua do that? Maybe, odds say no

The argument for it happening is the short passing game, that the cheats used for 20 years, can be duplicated or at least be similar enough, so that we can move up and down the field and score often

  33. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We are one of only 6 AFC teams with winning records the last 2 years in a row.
Only the Bills, Chiefs, Titans, Steelers, and Colts had winning seasons in both 2020 and 2021.
    (And the Miami Dolphins)
And only 5 in the NFC.
    … …
We are elite, and we need to start acting like it.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

But only one of those teams that didn’t make the playoffs

You aren’t even in the elite discussions until you win a playoff game

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

        There is no such requirement.

Sure, if someone is there in the 7th, but you don’t have to reach

My biggest issue with drafting a P/K before the 6th is, their game doesn’t always translate to NFL, because of ball size

I have seen you type this statement a couple of times at least and I have to say I don’t think the difference in ball size is any factor in the kicking game. The NCAA does not have a “standard” size football. Depending on the team, conference, etc the balls used may come from several different manufacturers and the sizes range from team to team and conference to conference depending on which manufacturer they are using.

College balls range in length from 20 3/4″ – 21 1/4″ (1/2 range) NFL balls have a tighter tolerance because they all come from one manufacturer. (Wilson) they range from 21″ to 21 1/4″
The quarter inch difference in length is negligible (or even non-existant)

At the widest point of the ball, the circumference is 27 3/4 inches to 28 1/2 inches in college and 28 inches to 28 1/2 inches in the NFL.

The NFL ball IS NOT harder to kick. MOST of the time the ball is about the same size as the NFL ball, but MAYBE a half inch smaller in circumference. more like 1/4″ – That equates to 1/6″ of diameter difference.

Way over spoken difference that in reality doesn’t make one.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

NFL balls are also harder, making them harder to kick

My reference to ball size goes back many years, if the ball sizes have changed I wasn’t aware of it

  35. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Steve, I don’t really follow why you wouldn’t consider Diggs’ previous contract in the extension to get the average, but you would with Hill. I get you’re saying it’s all in how you look at it. I just don’t get why you would look at the two contracts differently. The results are the same. You get a player for ‘x’ number of years for ‘x’ number of $$$. Just because one player switched teams doesn’t make the new average $$$, the new guaranteed $$$, or the # of years different.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

And if memory serves, we had a similar conversation the first time we extended Howard, and I made the same argument then I am making now (that you take his prior years and rip them up, and re-average the new total years) and you took the opposite stance that time.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Disregard this last statement, I confused myself, lol. You’re staying consistent in that you said you don’t rip up Howard’s old contract (like you say now you don’t rip up Diggs’). So actually, we’re just rehashing that old argument. We obviously still disagree, lol.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Howard’s and Digg’s contract seem similar, and they’re players you must have and keep happy

Hill’s contract needed to be extended, because you don’t want to give that compensation for 1 year

Also by trading for Hill you get the current contracts lower figure to make the contract somewhat easier to digest

The 3 players mention are impact players, it’s Ok to over pay them, you don’t want to over pay Tannehill

  36. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

SB window thinking is like this.
Who would you rather have on your bench @ roster # 52? Solomon Kindley or Jerry Hughes?
Kindley would be inactive most Sundays. Hughes would only be on the field 6-8 plays a game.
Sol is a great developmental, but Hughes might make the strip sack that wins Week 4.

Notice they built a good team first, then stole just what they needed from the rest of the league who were still fumbling their roster like the Mets do so often, in perpetual rebuilding mode, mismatching needs, letting their core guys go, bringing in random shiny toys with no Big Picture.

  44. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    Brilliant!! or duh! obvious.
Why run a play the guys have no confidence in, that has a high chance of failure, of making them look bad?
    … …
So we will run a play that Hill loves, then one that Waddle loves, then one that Mostert loves, then one that Gesicki loves, then one that Chase loves, then Ced’s best play, etc. etc. with obviously more of Hill’s, but what McDaniel said is why waste opportunity on plays that nobody likes?
And by plays that guys like,
he specified that that means plays that make the players look good and feed their families.
Obviously that means successful plays which means yards gained for the Dolphins.
That’s why guys 6 and 8 years later still say they loved playing for him and

I don’t really mind what mcshay said other than it’s obvious

The Dolphins positioned themselves to be ready to draft a QB in 2023 if necessary you can even draft some one next year and keep Tua

When It comes down to it I don’t really think it’s so much that Tua has to improve, it’s the entire offense needs to improve: the running game, the OL pass protection, the YAC and the red zone conversions are actually more dire than the play at the QB position

But that doesn’t mean we can’t improve the qb play

In 2 years Tua has over 4400 yards, 27 TDs to 15 ints and a 66% completion rate
      Those aren’t great numbers
They also aren’t really bad either
He’s not really hurting the offense
He’s not taking it to the next level either

The difference between eye opening numbers and where Tua is now really might just be a few big plays here and there, or a run game

But if that doesn’t come together, you’ll evaluate where you can better and QB may be a big part of that

So moderate improvement from Tua will probably lead to substantially more scoring if some of the other weaknesses we addressed pan out in 2022

But the one thing that you say, ‘we need a QB” about is another injury
Ore than anything else, a healthy year from Tua in 2022 is important to where we go in 2023

I honestly don’t care for the narrative that it’s in Tua’s hands now, bc I don’t Tua was the difference between scoring more last year and not scoring more

For me the absence of the running game, the poor pass protection, the poor playcalling are all bigger factors in improving o at offense than Tua’s play to play performance

If all those things are better, our scoring goes up and his numbers go up, and then the people who don’t really watch him, don’t have the same stuff to parrot

But I really think this off-season was about improving the offense, not improving Tua’s play

I really don’t know if I’m explaining it right

But if you throw out the Tennessee game (yes that’s cherry picking), almost everything Tua did was good for the Dolphins.

I think if Tua plays exactly the same way he has the last 2 years, and we have a running game and better playcalling and a receiver like Hill who’s going to make something out of nothing, our scoring jumps up significantly

As bad as the OL was, I don’t even think the OL was killing us as much as the other things were

Early on in the coaching hunt McDaniel was my favorite, bc I think he’s innovative with the running game

So that addresses my first problem

And hill is the difference snaked on that 3rd issue

Playcalling we have to see but I wasn’t quiet in my squeals about playcalling last season – so I can’t see it getting worse. The minute I see that draw play from shotgun on first down a couple of series in a row – I give up

Forgive me if that sounds ignorant, I didn’t know until recently

    Piggy
I live in Adelaide. Well a suburb. Capital of S.A.

      Cool

My brother is going to be working for university of Adelaide
He’s got a contract with the school

He had a contract before covid
And for 2 years he hasn’t been able to get a visa….lol

It’s honestly a horrible story bc it’s his dream job
He’s at a school in Seattle right now, he had to take a job elsewhere while he waited for 🇦🇺 to start granting work visas again

  82. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

    Tim
You nailed Tua’s game perfectly. That will us many games.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think the NFL is in for a big surprise. 😉

This new coaching staff is all about blocking on offense. Not that others are not, but this is a primary fundamental with their history as coaches.

Block the friggin play and let the skill do its thing.

We have weird fans and Tua has really brought it out

  85. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’ll probably sign a lot of UDFAs hoping to find a gem and a couple of role players. Our draft is thin but we added a bunch of FAs including re-signings. We could probably already do a 53 man with who we have, but we know there will be some new rookies and maybe some vets down the road.

  86. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Think this year is a horrible year to have lots of draft picks

    Might be why we don’t

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s been reported. After 15 or so and overrating the QBs it’s considered a ho-hum draft. But there is a lot of good potential 2nd through the 4th. It’s just not a special draft. There are always good players available.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t think people want to say it – but it’s a weak draft

It’s considered deep at WR, but it doesn’t feel like last year with chase, waddle and Pitts at the top

      There’s decent OL too
      And some decent pass rushers

But I suspect a lot of the guys that will go too 10 this year would have been late firsts last year

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I agree. It’s weak in QB, which gives it a “light” feel.
There seem to be a bunch of really fast guys this year though.
It’s one of the fastest drafts ever.
Lots of fast RBs and WRs, and even the LBs are fast.

    • ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

I do believe this is part of the strategy. We get better “plug-and-play” talent in ’22 FA to (hopefully) take us to at least the next step (play-off team). We retool in ’23 draft with 2 x day 1 and 3 x day 2 picks, and bring players in at positions where we know we will lose that talent we have now acquired for the medium term, to (again hopefully) keep us as perennial play-off contenders. That’s the theory anyway. Grier seems even more open to deals than MTP, which is a good thing if they work in our favour.

I hope when Tua has a great season, all these fuckers who have been deriding him since he was drafted and have continued to tear him up eat some legit shit. The amount of disrespect this kid gets is totally undeserved.

It’s not like he’s shooting off his mouth like Johnny Manziel or something.

OMG – I almost mentioned Manziel and decided not to. He seems like a nice kid, not a jerkoff like Manziel was rubbing his fingers together.

I imagine with McDaniel at the helm that games like this will be the norm for Tua.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Shows what Tua can do, if he has a little blocking and full compliment of receivers

He is who we thought he was, soon everyone will see that, then we’ll start to hear the U75s saying I’ve always been a Tua guy…

  91. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Xavien Howard said “everything is different” in the building now. “Everybody is happy. Mike McDaniel is bringing that energy” and he (and others) are hopeful that McDaniel “will bring the offense up to the standard” everyone wants.

What an FN prick, so he got paid translates to everybody is happy

We have a word for that, narcissist

  92. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

In today’s NFL QBs have better comp%, than they did in the 70s, because they take better care of the ball and throw more short passes

Josh Allen had a comp% in the mid 50s in college, because he played more like a 70s QB, with less short passes and took more risk

The AZ game proved Tua can wing it, just like the rest, if he has help, and that was a not fully healed version

I have to shake my head, when I think about the type of WRs we’ve had the last 2 years, I could see in 2020 with Fitz, but not last year, even Fuller wasn’t a fit

  93. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

How to get to the Super Bowl
    — Rebuild the roster after several years of failure.
    — Move on from a black HC.
    — Move on from a good but not great QB.
    — Get a young offensive minded HC.
    — Draft a collegiate champion QB.
    — Renovate the WR room with 2 bona fide stars.
    — Take advantage of a division with one team with a former superstar and another team in disarray.
    — Utilize a very good pass catching TE.
    — Overcome some marginal OL players.
    — Have one of your team colors be orange.
    — Make the last letter in your city be i.

  94. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

This league is littered with elite QB’s who couldn’t win the big one or only have 1 ring under their belt. Hell, even Peyton Manning only has 2 in 4 tries and needed a top tier defense and running game for both of those to happen. Not to mention HOF coaching.
It’s tough to get to a Super Bowl, let alone win one. People act like you can throw a big-time arm out there and everything sorts itself out. A QB still needs a team around them. Stafford barely won the thing last year, even with a super team around him. It’s that tough.
I’m saying all of that to point out that Tua’s skill isn’t what has been holding this team back. His injuries have to an extent, but not his skillset or lack thereof.
It’s like people don’t understand that football is the ultimate team sport.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yeah, the stars need to align for you to win it

Agree Tua isn’t the problem, we’ll see how much of the solution he is this year

  95. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Couple of weeks before the draft and not much to say, we’ve been a little spoiled in recent years with all the picks

  96. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If healthy think we’re going to see a version of Preston, that fits with Tua, something closer to what we saw against AZ

MM needs, that big bodied WR, that can block and run slants

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Good move for status quo, but how about injecting the D with a splash move of their own?

How about an ILB, that can stop the run, so we can force teams to pass, allowing the Amoeba D to flourish

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

This is a good move IMO.
He plays hard and knows the system, and the coaches know what he can do, so no transition time.
He steps right in to spell Raekwon and gave us quality minutes when Davis was down for a few games.

  98. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

obvious statement, but it seems we are happy going into the draft hoping to hit on some spots and then filling in with some budget names in FA if the draft doesn’t flow the way they want.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

With our 1st pick essentially being an early 4th, what could we possibly hit on other than a P?

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

good point … you wouldn’t want to waste cap to sign a third tier FA only to see a quality guy surprisingly fall to you in the draft who plays the same position .
