AFC East Preseason Outlook

The 2022 NFL Draft hasn’t happened yet, but I figured let’s take a look at the current state of our division. The Bills were aggressive in free agency as were the Miami Dolphins. The New York Jets were somewhat quiet in free agency but they are primed to add talent in the upcoming draft. As of right now, the Jets hold picks #4 and #10 in RD 1, picks #35 and #38 in RD 2, #69 in RD3, two 4th RD picks #111 and #117 and two in RD 5, #146 and #163. So four picks in the top 40, and then an additional 2 picks each in round 4 and 5. The Patriots have a pretty standard draft selection available with one pick each through the first 5 rounds and then one additional 6th rounder for 7 total picks. The Patriots pick in RD 1 #21, #54 in RD 2, #85 in RD 3, #127 in RD 4, #170 in RD 5, and then 2 picks in RD 6 at #200 and #210. The Bills have 8 selections in the 2022 Draft, two in RD 6, and one in each other round, RD 1 #25, RD 2 #57, RD 3 #89, RD 4 #130, RD 5 #168, in RD 6 2 selections at #185 and #203, and in RD 7 #231. The Dolphins as we all know sent two of our top picks RD1 and RD 2 to KC for the services of one Tyreek Hill, WR.

The Bills struck first in free agency with a big move for their defense, acquiring Von Miller formerly of the SB Champion LA Rams. I was a little surprised that Miller left the Rams, but he did go to the AFC super bowl favorite Buffalo Bills. Miller signed a 6YR/$120M deal. The Bills aren’t the unanimous favorite, but they are among the favorites. The Bills added depth at QB behind Josh Allen trading for Case Keenum and signing Matt Barkley, They added a very good slot receiver in Jamison Crowder, a solid OG in Roger Saffold, a pretty good TE although an underachieving one in O.J. Howard. The Bills also brought back former Bill and former Dolphins DT Jordan Phillips. They added Dolphins fave RB Duke Johnson for depth, as well as former Dolphins C Greg Mancz. The Bills are definitely an elite team as currently constituted, we’ll see if their draft can put them over the top.

The Patriots were not big spenders in free agency this year. Last year, uncharacteristically they were very aggressive but have settled back into just filling depth, and not going for the high ticket players. They brought in RB/WR Ty Montgomery from the Saints and re-signed their own RB James White. They did also re-sign OT Trent Brown. They added QB Brian Hoyer as a backup for Mac Jones. They re-signed S Devin McCourty and added FA CB Malcolm Butler from the Cards. There were a few mor low key signings as well, and due to BB being the HC and GM, the Patriots are still ranked as one of the better AFC teams, usually ranked higher than our own Dolphins.

The Jets fortified their O-line by signing OG Laken Tomlinson (who I really wanted!) early in free agency. They signed TE C.J. Ozumah who showed promise last year for the Bengals. They re-signed WR/KR/PR Braxton Berrios (Another player coveted by FU bloggers). Theyt also brought in another TE, former Vikes TE Tyler Conklin. They re-signed all purpose RB Tevin Coleman and brought back flash in the pan QB Mike White as well as long in the tooth QB Joe Flacco. Their big move was Tomlinson but their fireworks will be in the draft.

So right now, the Bills, who already had one of the best teams in the AFC got stronger on defense by adding one of the best pass rushers in the game in Von Miller. The Bills also have 8 picks in this draft. The Jets are definitely going to add lots of high ranked prospects from the draft having 4 picks in the top 40 picks. The Patriots while not having a reputation of drafting especially well, and this year received ZERO compensatory picks, no doubt due to their free agent spending spree of 2021, still have 7 picks and the rest of free agency including post June 1st cuts to improve their team. Our Dolphins are low on picks with just 5, and 2 of those are in RD 7, with the first not coming until RD 3, pick #102. There’s always the possibility of trading up and trading either a player or future assets. I don’t say no to any of those possibilities. The idea is to use assets to acquire players that can help the team now, and in the future. It doesn’t matter to me if we use future assets, we’re ready to compete now, it just accelerates the schedule. If there’s a player we feel will make us better now and in the future, go get him.

We closed the gap on the Bills, but if I’m going to be completely honest, until I see us play a competitive game against them, they are light years ahead of us. We haven’t really belonged on the same playing field with them the last few years, losing every game, including a 35-0 drubbing and an ugly 26-11 defeat last season. In 202, Ryan Fitzpatrick lost a shootout 31-28 and then we all remember the shellacking we took Week 17 with the playoffs on the line for us, 56-26. In 2019 we lost 31-21 and 37-20. You have to go back to November of 2018 where slid past the Bills 21-17, but lost the 2nd meeting Week 17 to start their dominant run, 42-17. We played well against the Patriots and Jets, but those Bills will hinder our playoff chances if we can’t take on from them. Can’t count on sweeping the Pats and Jets every year either. It will be interesting to see how much the Jets improve as they surround their QB with upgrades from the draft. They will almost certainly be selecting a WR and possibly on OL early. They need a pass rusher too and that could also be an early selection. If we want to compete in an ultra competitive AFC with teams like the Bills, Chiefs, Bengals, Titans, Raiders, Broncos and Chargers, and any other upstarts, we’re going to have once again do well in our own division, so at least 4-2 at a minimum.

They should legalize it nationally, but make the age to buy it 30, that way you aren’t giving young people the false indication it’s ok

Everyday use by young people makes them lazy, decreases brain cells before the brain is fully developed, and can lead them to a road of poverty and govt aide/support

This might be the best article I’ve seen from Fansided

    https://phinphanatic.com/2022/04/24/miami-dolphins-super-bowl-bound-impressive-off-season/

Good assessment on why Tua didn’t throw many long passes

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I actually think his reasoning is flawed. We threw short because of the limits of the O-line, not just because he couldn’t throw past the safeties. There’s not just one reason, there are multiple reasons, but if you asked me which factored in the most, I’d say our inability to sustain our pass blocking was the biggest factor in Tua consistently throwing short.

  3. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Year after year we heard this will be the year we’ll know, if Tannehill is a franchise QB, then after the season it was well he’s not there yet, but he did improve, then again the next season the same talk started

I don’t think we’ll know if Tua will be a franchise QB this year, I expect playoffs and improvement, but no clear indication, until he sustains it for a few seasons

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I agree, that’s why I think this idea that it’s make or break for Tua this year is silly. Unless a guy completely sucks you don’t put a 3 year window on a QB and then try again. You could do that forever. When you look at the history of QBs they’re usually at their best when they reach that 5 year mark. They’ve been through a lot by then.

I need somebody to give me proof that I can believe in that Tua has a weak arm.
I have seen QBs with weak arms, and it’s not hard to see.
Pennington had a weak arm (due to several shoulder injuries).
Terry Bradshaw at the end did also, for the same reason.
What has Tua done or not done that proves he has a weak arm?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Little time to throw deep and some throws with all arm due to pressure that didn’t look so good sticks in people’s minds. They forget the good stuff. Give him solid protection and weapons which we’ve tried to do and I think he can be surgical.

From what I saw of the SF offense,
it seemed that the plays were not simply designed just to draw 8 into the box,
but to disguise what was coming at the D,
to confuse the D as to whether it would be a pass or a run, and then
to hide who was running the ball and where they were going.
Some writers have said that now we will have more play action,
    and I’m sure we will,
but I think it’ll be much more creative than just faking a handoff RB run off left guard
and throwing it to a WR on a traditional route.

I AM NOT suggesting we do this (to be CLEAR!!!), but let’s play a game… a game of ‘WHAT IF…”

WHAT IF Mike McDaniel likes what he sees in Tua and has become fully invested in Tua ever since McDaniel touched down in Miami? Say he urges Chris Grier to spend one of those 1st rounders in 2023 (and nothing more) to move up for somebody… who would that guy be?

We’d be lucky to move up the to the tail end of the 1st round, probably more like the early 2nd round [barring a swap of futures (nothing more than a 4th!)].

  40. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Bridgewater is a lot like Tua, in that they are both touch passers, Teddy seems like a poor man’s Lamar Jackson scrambling, while Tua has his own quirky effective style

Tua’s arm is stronger, but it makes me wonder, if he follows the logic of not using 100% power, because it tightens up his muscles and causes errant throws

At a coaches soccer camp i attended they explained why you don’t use full power on kicks (muscles tighten) and you can actually kick it further 90% of the time by using a little less power

I think this may be the myth of Tua having a weak arm, it really isn’t, he just takes something off his throws for accuracy purposes, his deep comp% would suggest this is true and him throwing 70 yards if true would too

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      Agreed.
I definitely think any thrower takes a little off his max power to ensure accuracy. Even a strong arm hero like that guy in Buffalo had to learn he needed to put touch on certain passes.
You will also see guys step away from traffic so as to wind up to launch those ultra deep Hail Mary type throws. Even Aaron Rodgers.
      … …
Bottom line, an incomplete pass has close to zero value. An INT can lose a game. I’d rather knock 10 yards off a 50 yard Inc. So as to be sure to get a 40 yard completion.

  46. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    About Cowbreath’s predictions above.
I’d also predict a higher completion %, like 67.8. (haha)
Tua hit for 67.75 in 2021 in 13 appearances.
He threw only 2653 yds and only 16TDs
(but remember, he appeared in 13 games but really only played in 11 and a half, I think)
Somebody could check this for me, but I think he appeared in only one series before the rib injury
and only the second half of the game where he took back over.

  47. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

… averaged out, that is just 1.2 TDs per game, but it is 204 yds per game.
For next year’s yards and TDs, I hope it will be over a 20 game season,
but let’s keep it a regular season prediction,
although Tua might not play all of all 17.

  48. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

If he plays 17, at last year’s rate he would project to get 20.4 TDs,
so Cowtail is predicting 27, which is an improvement to 1.6 TDs per game.
I see better improvement than that, just because of Hill, so let’s say
    2 TDs per game.
That is 34 TDs, not 27.
I know that QBs do not always throw 2 TDs in every game,
    but they sometimes throw 3.
So 34 is an average of 2 per, but he does run some in, so to arrive at my prediction,
I take off 4 and say 30 TDs for Tua for 2022. (passing only, with 4 more rushing)

  49. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Tyreek averages over 9 TDs a year all by himself.
That’s over a 6 year career, including his rookie year,
and Mahomes was not always his QB.
Tyreek got 15 TDs in 2020!!!

  50. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

If we also get 1 rush TD per game, then that’s 21 points,
plus a FG means we would be averaging 24 ppg.
    Very Doable.
I really think with the speed we have now on offense, we will average more than that.
But my prediction is a fat 30 TDs for Tua on passes alone.

  51. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

In passing yards, the 49ers, where McDaniel came from,
finished 12th in the league, and we finished 18th last year.
But that was only 500 more yards over 17 games.
That’s just 29.4 yds more than we got per game.

  52. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The mighty Buffaloes only got 13 more passing yards than the 49rs.
    All year!
… less than a yard more per game.
    btw
The GOAT (Bucs) led the league with 5383 to our 3936.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So we can compete head on with whatshisface in West NY,
if we could just get one more decent 1st down throw per game.

  53. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

One odd thing is that we threw the ball a lot more than most teams last year.
We threw the ball 8th most in the league.
    615 pass plays!!

  54. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    One other cool thing though,
in light of Tua always being dissed for a low yd per throw ratio,
The 49ers were second in the league in yds per attempt at 8.6,
just a tick behind Cincy at 8.7.
We were 28th at 6.4 per completion.
The Drunk and Disorderly Tailgate tablebusters were 22nd @ 6.8.
Again, they are not that far ahead of us.
We can compete with them starting this year.

  55. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Think what Coward is saying is Tua will throw downfield more this year, so yards way up, because of that his comp% will go down

His TDs will go up, but not as much as we expect, because of rushing TDs

What he’s saying makes sense, but for us fans we expect more

  56. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The question was, If these are Tuas numbers will it mean playoffs???

As a team we had 3936 passing yards and 21 TDs, so some improvement, but not enough to stand alone, we need 2k rushing yards and our D to be what they were the last 9 games and about at least an equal number of takeaways/giveaways, then with these combined stats I’d say yes to playoffs

  57. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I’m thinking, based on what Garopolo did in SF, that Tua’s yds per will go up because of YAC, not because of yards the ball is in the air, although the improved OL will also help that a little.

  58. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We finished 30th in rushing yards last year (1568)
ahead of only the Falcons and Texans,
although the Falcons had a better per carry than we did.
So we were 31st in yards per carry. (3.5)
Our longest run from scrimmage was 30 yards.
That was the worst in the NFL.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

However, we were not too bad in rush TDs.
      We got 12,
tied with the Saints and Lions for 24th.
(However that was only half what the patsies scored on the ground.)
(2nd behind the Eagles who led with 25.)

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Mostert has 4 runs longer than 40 yards in his NFL career.
He only has had 1610 total yards in 7 years in the league, though.
His first team ever was the Eagles in 2015.

  59. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

As a track athlete under coach Brendan Robinson, Mostert was a standout sprinter, hurdler, and jumper. He won the 2010 FHSAA 3A District 6 title in the 300-meter hurdles.[9] At the 2011 FHSAA 3A Outdoor State Finals, he finished first in the 100 meters, with a time of 10.68 seconds, and placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles, with a personal-best time of 37.95 seconds.[10]

He was a member of the Purdue track team. He was ranked by NFL.com as the fastest college football player in the NCAA, with only Oklahoma State wide receiver Tyreek Hill possessing a faster 100m time (9.98 s). He took gold in both the 60 meters (6.63s) and 200 meters (20.73s) at the 2014 Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships.[11] He qualified for the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 100 meters (10.15s), 200 meters (20.65s) and as a member of 4×100-meter relay squad.[12]

  60. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

with the Philadelphia Eagles.[27] Mostert had an excellent preseason; between his 157 rushing yards and 191 receiving yards, totaling for 351 yards, he led the NFL in yards from the line of scrimmage in the preseason. He also added in five kick returns for 162 yards. Despite this effort, he was ultimately cut on September 4, 2015, in preparation for the Eagles having to cut their roster down to 53.[28]

2015, The Miami Dolphins signed Mostert off the Eagles practice squad. Mostert returned two kicks for 57 yards for the Dolphins during Week 2.[30] On October 13, 2015, he was released by the Dolphins in hopes of moving him down to practice squad.[31] Mostert did not clear waivers as he was picked up by the Baltimore Ravens the following day.

On October 14, 2015, Mostert was signed by the Baltimore Ravens after losing third-string running back, Lorenzo Taliaferro to a season-ending foot injury.[32] Mostert returned five kicks for 164 yards in seven games with the Ravens.[33] On December 15, 2015, Mostert was cut by the Ravens in hopes of putting him on practice squad; however, Mostert did not clear waivers as he was placed on the Browns 53-man roster.[34]

On December 16, 2015, Mostert was claimed off waivers by the Cleveland Browns.[35] He was named the starting kick returner for the Browns final three games, where he returned 12 kicks for 309 yards.

Mostert signed the Browns’ one-year tender offer on March 7, 2016.[36] On September 4, 2016, he was waived by the Browns to make room for other players claimed off waivers.[37]

“Miami should trade a 2023 first and second-round pick to the Texans to add this inside linebacker who can do everything at a high level. Lloyd has playmaking instincts, defends the run well, is effective in coverage and knows how to rush the passer (16.5 sacks in four seasons). His addition would complete the Dolphins defense.”

I’ve been doing some homework on a select few IOL and discovered that Luke Fortner, C, Kentucky, already has a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. I don’t know if that’s a positive or a negative in terms of a long football career. I recall the Ravens drafting John Urschel (PSU, mathematical genius) several years ago and he retired early to pursue intellectual interests.

I’ll say this much: if he’s dedicated to the game of football, I wouldn’t sleep on him. He’s probably the most intelligent player this Draft class and many Draft classes prior… plus I’m sure he was brilliant in draft class (haha!).

Is this you thinking outside the box or doing what we said a few weeks ago? lol
    —————
I’d say it’s more trying to predict what our FO could possibly do if they were foolish enough to trade one of our future 1st rounders. And most specifically, WHO(?) might they be willing to trade up for.

As much as I like Tyler Linderbaum, I’m not sure he so radically changes the face of our O-Line that we should spend a future 1st rounder in acquiring him. What’s more (and if Chris Grier isn’t full of shit), he gets calls annually to trade away Michael Deiter. Assuming he’s telling the truth, Deiter may already be our answer at Center with our new coaching staff.

My post was not a suggestion, it was an experiment (a ‘what if’?). The more and more I look at it (said experiment), I simply cannot get behind it.

Are there any other players this Draft class worth dealing a future 1st rounder for? That was the original question. I think it’s a relatively ‘meh’ class and anybody worth trading up for will cost us more than just a future 1st rounder, but who knows what we’ll do come Draft day.

I feel we’re more inclined to trade one of our two future 3rd rounders to move up for somebody… we’ll soon see! CAN’T WAIT!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think it would be foolish to trade a pick in next year’s draft to draft a guy they like this year. Just because you say this draft is meh it doesn’t mean there aren’t some very good prospects this year. It’s up to the team to decide that. It’s about adding good players, not counting picks.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

This draft is DEEP, not top-heavy. I think it would be wise to not go overly crazy for somebody outside of the top-16.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And if ya want to get into the top-16, it’s going to cost us more than just one future 1st rounder to do so.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The only reason this draft isn’t considered a great draft is because it doesn’t have the special QB or two and no generational prospect. But there are plenty of good prospects in this draft that are going to become good pros.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Allow me to ask you, Tim: what did YOU think about my trade experiment?

  77. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Observation: we’ve done NOTHING to upgrade the Defensive side of the ball this offseason and it isn’t perfect. IF we were to trade up in this Draft, I’m seeing it being for a LB… an ILB with 3-down potential.

I can’t seem to get away from Brandon Smith, and he might not last to pick #102. Thus, I think I’d be willing to trade one of our two 2023 3rd rounders (along with #102) to move up to get him… or perhaps a different ILB, contingent on where we grade ILBs.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Re-signing Ogbah was important. You can’t call it an upgrade because he was already with us the last 2 seasons but we had to get that done or we would have been weaker on defense. I think keeping the band together on defense is very valuable because everyone knows the scheme and the younger guys can take it to another level.

  78. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, I didn’t see your trade though. I just got on, saw you discussing it but not the parameters.

  79. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The Giants are trying to clear cap space and retool their roster. What about trading for LB Blake Martinez who is a tackling machine? He is coming off of an ACL injury last year but it happened early in the season. Guys come back pretty well these days with those injuries.

    • Wyoming85's avatar Wyoming85 says:

He didn’t show up for “voluntary” work outs????

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not sure but he’s still rehabbing 6 months into it. You want him ready by September even if he only works his way into the lineup on a regular basis in week 3-4. The guy is like Zach, he finds the ball carrier and gets him to the ground.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Just draft Brandon Smith and be done with it.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        LOL

He does not have the instincts of a Blake Martinez but in our defense Brandon Smith could develop into an impact player. I’ve liked and mentioned him since January. If he falls to us at #102 I’d make the pick. Not sure I’m trading up much for him. He’d start off on STs, backup the vets unless he really balls out in TC and PS. I think he has good upside. Get him around Jerome Baker and others. Could be good stuff. 🙂

  80. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If a team trades for Deebo SF is going to want a lot. He doesn’t have a big contract a team is acquiring but they will have to pay him. They can set it up the way they want. SF will want a top 10 pick or a 1st and more the later it gets.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

He is going to wind up in Tampa. They have been clearing cap space for a reason

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Interesting take. They will have to trade most of their draft for Deebo. 27, 60, 91 could get it done. You give up a lot when you already know he’s a really good NFL player. Deebo is entering his 4th season. He doesn’t want run the ball a lot anymore. Or if he does he wants to paid to do it. He had 1,400 yards receiving in 2021.

    Randy,

I enjoy Guillermo’s directing style. Pan’s Labyrinth is one of my favorite movies ever.

After they left the circus is where it went downhill for me as well. Once that happened, it became glaringly obvious how the story was going to unfold. When that happened and I looked at how much time was left in the movie and couldn’t believe there was still nearly 2/3s of the movie. I just mentally groaned continuously as each scene unfolded exactly as the entire audience knows it’s going to. Even the little twist of the final scene is entirely predictable at the beginning of that scene.

It had a long list of top actors, it was acted well, and like all his movies, it looked great. It was just an hour too long.

In addition, there are shows that are solely about betting, half hour shows about which games to bet and how. I honestly think it’s a big problem, someone needs to corral this shit and rein it in.

To add to this, a couple of weeks ago the Mets were on Apple+ TV on Friday night, so I watched it. During each and every pitch, on the bottom of the screen was a graphic of betting odds on the player batting either getting a hit, hitting a HR, striking out, etc. It changed each pitch. If people don’t think THAT’S a problem, I’d be worried. There are probably tons of kids out there that have never bet before that are being drawn in by “bet forgiveness” ads stating you can lose your first bet up to $200 and we’ll cover it. It’s so out of control, I wish I could see the stats of people who never wagered on sports that are now betting daily.

  99. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Mike E. I don’t think it matters who owns Twitter either. People have politicized it. The person who owns it is irrelevant.

Musk will run it like a business. The prior owners ran it like a business too. People infer a lot of ulterior motives to each and it’s really simple minded and silly. All these guys want to to make a profit. They aren’t your enemies and they aren’t your saviors. The ideas that make it into the realms of public debate these days are just ridiculous. People just say crazy ideas enough and people talk about them insufferably

The only political thing I can say on the substance is a good thing. The change of ownership will probably kill all the talk about removing federal protections from social media – so that’s a good thing for all of us. If that talk goes away bc people that were saying it think they derived a benefit by a change of ownership , that’s really good for everyone.

A non political thing I am concerned that fee structure going from free to charging a fee. Given that he paid so much for it, financed that price, combined with the growing trend for subscription services – I think there’s a real risk that Twitter ends up costing money to use, that’s got nothing to do with the owner, that’s just economics. Twitter costing money may be inevitable. A change of ownership especially at such a high sale rate may have a accelerated that. You won’t hear people discuss this kind of stuff publicly bc they are concerned about their immediate political affiliations, but change of ownership always has an economic affect as does time and current trends. It’s something for the average consumer to keep there eye open for IMO
