Dolphins will wait until Day 2 of Draft

I’ve made some statements indicating I’d be in favor of the Dolphins trading future picks and/or players to move up into RD 1 tonight, in which currently we don’t own any picks. Actually, we have quite a wait, as we all sit and watch players come off the board to other teams, sometimes division rivals. We’ve made our moves in free agency and trades, especially the big trade acquiring WR Tyreek Hill from the Chiefs for multiple draft picks, our 1st, 2nd and 4th RD picks this year, along with 4th and 6th in 2023. That leaves us with a late 3rd RD pick (#102), a 4th RD pick (#120), and two 7th RD picks (#224 and #247). Oddly enough, this will be the first time I won’t be watching Day 1 of the NFL Draft because Opening Day in my softball league for my team begins tonight at 8PM. Our game was rained out last Tuesday. I’m taking this as a sign from the universe that there’s no need to watch tonight, the Dolphins will be idle.

Well, it sure would be fun to make a move to get back into RD1 though, wouldn’t it? Say, somewhere around pick 20-25, or maybe a bit later if a certain OC slipped a bit further than expected, and the Dolphins pounced and scooped up Tyler Linderbaum. Sure, they LOOOOOOVE Michael Deiter and all 31 other teams have been harassing the Dolphins to acquire his services. Yeah, uh-huh. Just because I don’t believe that, that doesn’t mean Michael Deiter won’t be our C this season. Why should I believe they love him so much? I don’t recall him being dominant, ever, and even when he had the starting job this past season, he only made it through 8 games. We don’t know how Linderbaum would fare as a pro, but he’s exactly what the Dolphins are looking for, a powerful, nimble, quick footed move center who could probably start day one. Hey, maybe if Deiter is so wanted, we could package him to move up to take our center for the next decade.

Let’s face it Dolphins fans, most drafts we grit our teeth in anger when they don’t take the guys we like, but for the first 2 rounds, we KNOW they won’t be taking guys we like because we have no picks. Will that make it easier? Probably not, we’ll be angry watching our favorite prospects go elsewhere as per usghe, but at least for rounds 1 and 2 it should be easier. Is it possible that we move up in this draft? Of course it is, I can’t make it any clearer that our window in which we will be competitive in has been accelerated. We can be competitive NOW. I see no reason not to move future assets to acquire help for this season and beyond. Picks are assets, but players that help you win NOW are better than future assets. I know so many of you want those multiple picks for the “JUST IN CASE TUA SUCKS” scenario. Tua doesn’t suck. I’m not worried about that in the least. To me, the question is, is there a player that we can acquire in RD 1 that makes us better immediately and the next 5 years? If Tyler Linderbaum fits those parameters, then go ahead, make the trade and get him. I should be home by 10:30PM, just make sure you don’t do it until then.

Which WR in this draft is better than Tyreek Hill? I get the money part of it and the draft picks. Leave that out, think about the player on the field.

Tim – to answer your WR question, we won’t know for a few years. Tyreek was a 5th RD pick, so we’ll have to wait and see

Right now? He’s been in the league for 6 years and has made the pro bowl every year, 3 time 1st team all pro. He’s in his prime at 28 years old. None of the guys in the draft have played in the NFL yet. Then we have Waddle who made the all rookie team. We’re just getting started and don’t sleep on Cedrick Wilson Jr. We have three proven NFL WRs. 🙂

No, not right now, total career. Right now ot will be hard to imagine any rookie being better than Hill, but Chase and Waddle had great rookie seasons.

Lance Zierlein – Four-phase special teams experience.

Tindall has to work his way into the defense. The Dolphins let the draft come to them. That’s the approach they took. The big trade up is over. We now know we’re sticking to where we’re at. Depth and competition.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Tindall can cover and blitz and tackle.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree with that, he gives us an LB, that can run with WRs, not Hill and Waddle, but teams 3rd WRs

Love the pick, he’s sideline to sideline

I kind of called those 2 picks, but I give all the credit to yous guys doing our scouting MF13, BBM, Naples…

  60. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Inside linebacker who proved his toughness and dependability in Georgia’s stop unit. Tindall played in a great scheme surrounded by NFL prospects, so projecting his pro potential is a little trickier. He has average size and instincts for work between the tackles, but the pursuit speed and tackling talent to run and hit from sideline to sideline. Play recognition versus the run and pass should improve with additional playing time. Tindall should be an early backup and instant four-phase special-teamer with the potential to eventually step into a starting role.
    Strengths

Became more decisive with diagnosis as the season progressed.
Plays his role inside the scheme.
Consistent to find his way to the football.
Maintains a wide base and squared pads when attacking gaps.
Sits down firm to maintain his fit.
Delivers a leveraged blow to climbing blockers.
    Adequate sideline-to-sideline speed.
No premature leaps as chase tackler.
Widens and waits to snap hips into an open-field tackle.
    Four-phase special teams experience.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Don’t agree with all of that, but he’s no where near his ceiling, his speed will allow him to excel at NFL level, just depends on how bad he wants it

If he has the heart of a champion, he has the skill to go as far as he wants

We talked this morning about swinging for the fences, well he’s that

  61. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    ILB
Physical player who is willing to do whatever the team requires. Wakes up choosing violence on the football field. Disciplined eyes. Great in run defense. Great top-end speed and elite vertical jump testing.

  62. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Our team is being built on speed. Channing Tindall meets that criteria. He adds superior depth with upside.

  63. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

No see for our Defense Tindall is a run stopping ILB. Let Baker do the finesse work.
Because Tindall’s pure faster than TEs and right there with the RBs, so he can cover that outlet check down guy and then bring the lumber without them escaping.
But also he can run down and smack down scrambling QBs like that one guy in western NY.

  64. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We lost to Titans, because we couldn’t move the ball, OL dominated, and couldn’t stop the run

2 OL in FA, now an LB that can help out agai st the run

We neede someone that could run and Chase, to cleanup runs, so they don’t turn into long gains

Now bring in Zach to show him how to watch tape and diagnose

  65. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Kiper had our team needs as LB and DT only

  66. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

See Georgia learned something and played Tindall against Alabama like we will use him against buff etc.
“…stellar performance in CFP Championship Game vs. Alabama, with eight tackles, 1.5 TFL, 1.0 QB sack and five QB pressures, “

  67. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Jerome Baker went #73 3rd round in 2018. Channing Tindall went #102 3rd round in 2022. I think Tindall being around Baker will make him a better player. Young depth players learning from good established players is how a team gets really good. Who did Baker learn from?

Anyone else see a little Micah Parsons when watching Tindall’s tape?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yes, when he rushes the passer, he’s just not as violent

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Georgia was so good on defense the NFL has creamed their pants drafting these guys. LOL

Channing Tindall was a part of that but not the main man. He fits what the Dolphins are doing on defense though. We use lots of looks and schemes. Speed kills. He fits the mold.

When people keep talking about Tua and the offense, they’re forgetting that we’re building a scary friggin defense. 😉

  70. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

When you get a player with that much talent at 102, it’s kind of hard to believe, but key is he was hidden as Naples said

If he played for another school he’d likely have been picked early 2nd rd

He’s a little raw, but better that, than polished with less talent, and we really don’t need him to start game 1, so he’ll have time to get acclimated

  71. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Jets won the draft, but what will they do with those guys and how long will it take to catchup to rest of division?

Feels good to not have to depend on draftees for a change

  72. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I am 2 for 2 on making calls. After looking at who is left.

My next one is we select OC Zach Tom at 125.

We need a backup center. He is one who has also played LT and a good athlete.

  73. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

A couple times when Georgia was about to play S Carolina, they would make Tindall Captain for the Game because he is from Columbia, so he would go out and have excellent games in front of his homies.
    Pretty “smart” coaching.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s pretty crazy right? Of course this or that could be better. But this team can go compete with the rest of the league. Every team has some flaws. You have to have some supreme talent though. I think we joined that group. The AFC is going to be a battle in 2022.

I’m looking forward to it. 🙂

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah I agree. We have some core players and good young depth in all phases. The deeper and better your team is the better the chance you have to win the battle of attrition.

Tua know it’s on him to lead it. More positive plays than negative. That’s the QB’s job. If he plays well we’re going to be in the playoffs. Some fans here say why put it all on Tua? I’m not. But him playing on a higher level changes everything. Right?

  76. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Did you see the video of Coach McDaniel high fiving Dan Marino after drafting Tindall?
    They were genuinely stoked.
Tindall is the first draft pick of McDaniel’s HC career.

  77. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

sb7, I agree it will be someone from that list. I am kind of looking at need. White and Henningsen are possibilities along with Tom. If that is the list from CBS, it’s missing a couple players. The one that stands out to me who is not on that list is they did a last-minute virtual meeting this week with NT/DT John Ridgeway. He could also be a possibility at 125.

  80. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Naples, looking at the roster and thinking about your backup concerns for Ogbah, I get it. But this is what it is:
Ogbah, Wilkins, Sieler, Davis, Butler, Jenkins, Phillips, Van Ginkel and maybe? That’s the 3-5 front.

Then the LBs lead by Baker with solid depth.

The Secondary with X, By. Jones, Holland, Br. Jones, Needham, Rowe etc.

Our defense has top 10 potential. Not many teams are as good as we are on defense. This group has been playing with each other a few years now. If this was our opponent, we’d all be scared. Come on… admit it. LOL

  81. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

LB Channing Tindall. He fits our defense. 🙂

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

As a dynamic athlete with outstanding speed, quickness and burst, Tindall is an ideal developmental prospect to groom for a bigger role down the road. The Georgia standout should excel as an A-plus special teams contributor until he is ready to compete for playing time as a potential starter. — Bucky Brooks

Miami Dolphins grades for 2022 NFL Draft
What are the Dolphins‘ grades for their selections in the 2022 NFL Draft as they look to address their main needs this offseason?

Round 3, Pick 102: Channing Tindall, LB, Georgia
The Dolphins had to wait until the 102nd pick to make their first selection. But all things considered, they were able to acquire an exciting prospect at that point. At the 102nd pick, the Dolphins selected Georgia LB Channing Tindall.

Tindall is one of the highest-upside linebackers in the 2022 NFL Draft. There’s also a lot of projection that comes with him. Tindall has good size at 6’2”, 230 pounds, with arms near 33” long. He’s also an elite athlete with 4.47 speed and a 42” vertical. Tindall very much needs to hone his instincts. He wasn’t an every-down linebacker at Georgia, and when he had to read the play, he was inconsistent. But in a run-and-chase role, his explosiveness and tackling ability will provide value. In the meantime, he can develop on the operational side.

    Grade: B

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think it is necessary to raise this grade because of the perfect fit that the player is for the defense AND for the roster.
While I agree that the player himself is a B grade (at this point), he is a perfect scheme fit for the defense we want to run. He fills that ILB niche with good pop like Roberts, but he is both bigger AND faster than Roberts.
In our D, his position is not a 3-Down player anyway, so him not being projected as that is a non issue. And he has a higher ceiling than where he is now.
… … so that should elevate him to a B+ over going to a team where he is a poor fit.
      PLUS
We have a good starter in place, so we don’t need to expose a rook in a crucial spot on the field where DCs can exploit him while he learns. Yet the guy in front of him on the depth chart is on a 1-yr deal as are his two current back-ups, so there won’t be any cap or contract mess to clean up as Tindall earns more playing time.
Plus we only had to spend the 102 pick to fill our position of greatest need!!!
So all that moves the transaction grade up to an A-
Very smart of Grier and lucky for us.

Just wondering how all the Leo Chenal fans felt when we took Tindall with Chenal on the board

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Still a Chenal fan, but I’m fine with Tindall.
Chenal is a lot bigger, which I like, but he could stiffen up in the same way Jake Long did and end up with a short career. Those muscle-bound guys sometimes flame out early when the flexibility goes as they age.

  86. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

So we stayed put, and I think we got ourselves a nice player. Maybe towards the end of the season this kid will get some more playing time being that Roberts is here on a one year deal.

  87. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Looking at some of his (Tindall’s) highlights, and wow, this kid closes so damn fast when he makes his route to the ballcarrier. It’s pretty impressive!

  88. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Grier alluded this much before the draft. I didn’t think we’d give up any picks from next year to move up.

“The Dolphins tried to trade up “a couple times,” Grier said, but “people wanted to make their picks.” Other potential trade partners wanted the Dolphins to give up one of their early 2023 picks to make a deal, which Grier said was “non-negotiable.” The Dolphins have five picks in the first three rounds of next year’s draft, including a pair of first-rounders and third-rounders.”

also good point that you noticed how he swats blocker hands away,
so they can’t latch on and slow him down as he blows by them.

Roberts probably gets hurt at some point and Tindall starts or he Zach’s him and causes him to retire after training camp

I’d bring him along slow the first quarter, let him get used to some sub packages, then unleash him

  91. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

In the article I posted, he mentioned how he loves the multiple ways he can contribute on D.

It was also speculated he can be a 4 down LB. If he becomes that, that’s awesome.

  92. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

What we have been doing since the tear-down is “roster-building.”
Instead of just randomly picking up players because they look like good players,
Grier has used what Flo decided the D should be and stuck to it and acquired the exact right players for that defense.
Then when they got McDaniel, he started immediately doing the same thing, even shedding Parker, who is talented but not a perfect fit for what our offense is designed to be.
This is how you get to be sustainable playoff contenders (like Pittsburgh).

  93. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I am just visualizing Tindall in a delayed blitz or a twist or stunt where he comes in late right up the gut at the QB. He’s so fast he can overcome the late start and still get the guy down.

“Tindall’s selection marks the seventh consecutive season the Dolphins have drafted a player who won a national championship during his collegiate career.”
    hmmm
    Can anybody name those?
    Tindall
    Waddle
    Tua

WELL HERE WE ARE ON DAY 2 OF THE DRAFT and we still have gaping holes on our offensive line. THE MORE THINGS CHANGE, THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME!!!!
    ——————————
The inaction of the FO tells me they believe there’s a strong chance that they’ve ALREADY PLUGGED THOSE HOLES WITH GUYS CURRENTLY ON THE ROSTER. To that nonsense I say “SHOW ME” for umpteen thousandth time during Steve Ross’s dreadful run as Dolphins’ owner!
    —————————-
NOW I’d like to think that it’s STILL POSSIBLE TO PLUG THOSE GAPING HOLES WITH PLAYERS YET TO BE SELECTED. And that’s likely true. Other franchises have gotten star O-Linemen in the later portions of the NFL draft. But NOT OUR FRANCHISE (at least NOT in the last several drafts). SO I believe the chances are SLIM & NONE that we will, all of a sudden, reverse history and fine at least TWO solid O-Linemen to plug these holes in the mid-to-later rounds of the draft. To do that, this FO first has to admit that their recent previous late round picks HAVE BEEN FAILURES, as far as the O-Line is concerned. Or, put another way, you first have to admit that there IS A PROBLEM before you can correct the problem. And I see NO EVIDENCE THAT OUR FO BELIEVES THERE’s A SERIOUS LACK OF BIG TIME TALENT ON OUR O-LINE.
    —————————-
ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS. Grier and his FO buddies need to SHOW ME that they’re capable of signing big time talent on the O-Line AND that they currently have the RIGHT coaches capable of “COACHING-UP” this talent into a first rate offensive line. And I DO NOT think that’s going to happen in the forseeable future.
    —————————
LET’s hope TUA’s got his best track shoes ready to go because I fear he’ll be running for his life AGAIN this season!

      ????Did you miss free agency????

      • randydolfan1947's avatar randydolfan1947 says:

NO, BOOKMAN, I DIDN’T MISS FREE AGENCY. AND I CAN COUNT TO 5.
I say again we are TWO Offensive linemen short of a full deck. PLUS, we certainly could use a 6th top quality O-Lineman because of the probability that at least ONE of our starters will miss significant playing time.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

OD, bottom line, it is time to “show me”. We did add 2 good ones in FA. I also think Deiter will prove to be a quality OC but upgradable. I know you have no more patience (unlike me) and it is quite understandable. I just don’t see where we can upgrade RT through the draft or what’s left in FA for this season. I hope one of our two 1st round picks next year are on an OT.

      • randydolfan1947's avatar randydolfan1947 says:

BOOKMAN; At some point,”Wait until next year” becomes a hollow excuse for failure. This is approximately the 12th or 13th episode of Ross’s “Wait until next year” strategy for developing a top notch offensive line.
        ——————
I FIRMLY BELIEVE that the FO is way overdue for an across-the-board overhaul. Bringing in a new head coach with NO PRIOR NFL HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE is enough of a challenge. To burden this new coach with an FO steeped in failure is just flat-out UNFAIR. But, after all, rewarding certain FO personnel with promotions or salary increases is the Steve Ross way of running an NFL franchise. It has failed in the past and it will continue to fail in the future.
        ——————
THAT’S WHY MIAMI’S BIGGEST NEED ISN’T IN THE O-LINE (although that IS a huge need). – – – MIAMI’S BIGGEST NEED IS A NEW OWNER!!

      • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I am enjoying this off season, and as far as performance on the field, I am as frustrated as anybody. I just couldn’t care less about who the owner is, I just want them to win now!!

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Glad to see your energy in full force.
Shows you have recovered well again.
Which 2 positions are you seeing in need of upgrade, Randy?

      • randydolfan1947's avatar randydolfan1947 says:

ACTUALLY, to fully answer your question, we need at least THREE top quality Offensive Linemen. Naples. A stud right tackle and right guard to protect Tua’s blind side would be a good start. Now as for the #6 O-Lineman, I’d like someone who could step in and start at center (NOT sold on Dieter). Ideally, this “6th Man” could also be used at the Guard position when the inevitable injury takes place. PLUS, in the IDEAL situation, a solid replacement at Tackle would be terrific. But, right now, we’re NOT CLOSE to having 7 top quality O-Linemen, so I’d settle for 5 FOR THIS SEASON ONLY!

  97. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Naples (re: your 9:10 post), I agree. I also think that is why they were talking to NT/DT John Ridgeway. He is a bull rushing penetrator who would open holes for a blitzing ILB. He could be a possibility at 125 but I still think it is going to be OC Tom.
