Recent signings add valuable depth to team

Neither player added makes the Dolphins a championship team, but hopefully the sum of what we had before this offseason, and what we’ve added during the offseason does add up to a championship team. At first, signing Sony Michel didn’t inspire me. After a couple of weeks, I realized that improving the depth on this team is important. It’s not a matter of is Sony Michel more talented than Mostert or Edmonds, it’s more a matter of we need guys who can carry the rock, and have done so in big situations. Michel fits that bill. Michel doesn’t need to be a superstar, he just needs to be able to step in and play if called upon. Bringing in LB Melvin Ingram fits that same bill. He won’t need to be the primary pass rusher, or edge setter. On the other hand, if we have a team in a bad situation, a 3rd and long, it will be great to have Ingram on the field, especially if it’s in a big spot in a big game, because he’s been there. One thing you can say about most of the guys who have been here is that when it’s been a big spot or big game, we’ve yet to step up and meet the challenge.

I give Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel a lot of credit for how they’ve transformed the roster, and just as importantly, the aura around this team and organization. There is a tremendous amount of positivity buzzing around this team that hasn’t been present in decades. I liked Brian Flores because he seemed like the tough minded guy you wanted to be your coach. One thing he lacked, and it seems severely lacked was vision of the big picture of what the whole team needed to be. Of course we haven’t played a game yet in the Mike McDaniel era, but the philosophy is out there, and it’s tangible. We don’t know exactly what we’re going to be, what our identity will be, but we have a pretty good idea, and I’d bet when the games start, we’ll see that just about all of us at FMU will see what we think we’ll see. Patience will possibly be necessary because implementing a system in today’s NFL isn’t that easy, with the limited amount of team practices, which has been drastically cut down from years past. Still, we’ve seen teams like the Rams with Sean McVay start quickly, and maybe that happens here too.

On 3rd and 1, 4th quarter and against the Bills, game tied with 3 minutes left, I don’t have a problem giving the ball to Sony Michel. He knows how to play the game and understands his responsibilities. He’s a young veteran RB coached by two great coaches too, Bill Belichick and Sean McVay. He’s been on winning teams and knows what it takes to win. I want that on our team, which frankly to this point, clearly doesn’t know what it takes to win. Melvin Ingram too. He will help our defense, he won’t lead our team in any statistical category, but his locker room presence, and presence of mind on the field will be invaluable. We have talent on this team, but these guys need players like this to show them. Sometimes I’m a little slow on the uptake, because the Michel move didn’t impress me on the surface of it. Pair it with Ingram and the light finally came on for me. Sorry, not sorry, we’re all in, and these moves help us to stay in throughout the season. Lean on these guys in big situations and other guys will see what to do and be interchangeable with them as the season progresses. That’s what we need, we need our guys have all the talent in the world to learn what it take to win. We can’t step on the field against the Bills and get blown out every time and expect to win a playoff game later on after the season. I look forward to this season more than any season in quite some time. Hope you do too!

possible late cuts to poach from each team
    Miami Dolphins

Preston Williams (WR) – Projected by some as an early 4th rounder, Williams is a UDFA out of Colorado State who made a huge splash against the Falcons in the first pre-season game. He looks likely to make this talent-starved Dolphins team, but he’s not a lock.

Myles Gaskin (RB) – This 7th round pick out of Washington has shown some promise in the preseason and could potentially be someone to keep an eye on.

Overall, the Dolphins are so bereft of talent across the board, it’s unlikely that many (any?) players with any talent fail to make the roster.

    • steveccnv says:

What’s the relevance of this 2019 article?

Are you saying both these guys are again on the chopping block?

  2. naplesfan2010 says:

—A team can release someone from the practice squad whenever they want. Since their salary isn’t guaranteed, they won’t owe them a salary for the remainder of the season.
—The only way an NFL team can steal a practice squad player from another NFL team is if that player is signed to the new team’s 53-man roster.
—If a practice squad player wants to sign with their current team’s upcoming opponent, it must happen no less than six days before the game (or 10 days on a bye week).
—If an NFL team signs a practice squad player from another team onto their 53-man roster, that player is paid a minimum of three weeks salary and counts towards the team’s 53-man roster for a minimum of three weeks, even if the player is released before that.

… each Tuesday, teams can designate four players as protected, so they can’t be placed on another team’s active roster from that day until kickoff. Teams can still poach on Mondays, though.
    … … in 2021

I’m talking about real protection, not week to week

    • steveccnv says:

Was mostly referring to someone like Skylar, and protecting him, so that he can be our #2 in 2023

Teams will often put guys on IR to protect them, see Bowden last year, but they shouldn’t have to

      • naplesfan2010 says:

It seems like we have lost 3 different PS QBs like that in recent years, guys who looked good in pre-season and we seemed to want to develop, but then again, I don’t see any of them playing on Sunday anywhere else.
If we can float Skylar through on the PS this season, then maybe he can replace Teddy as our backup in 2023, but that is VERY risky to depend on a guy like Skylar if Tua is out several games.

  5. naplesfan2010 says:

I slightly predict Mostert to the IR to start the season,
then bring him back for the stretch run / playoffs after the bye.
That would give him time to get well and give us a look at ZQ White
(or just give Ahmed one last chance to make the team).
Possibly do that with Bowden as well, so
then maybe we can give a tryout to Sherfield or Cracraft or that UDFA Braylon Sanders.

  6. naplesfan2010 says:

I read where the local beat writers were forbidden to mention who was playing where in OTAs and who did not attend.
I also heard that McDaniel said he was okay with certain vets not attending, becuse they know what to do and how to get their bodies ready, etc.

    • Rockphin says:

I read the same thing and was going to post a reply to Steve that he MIGHT be practicing at RT and we can’t know because of the reporting rules.

  7. naplesfan2010 says:

Has anybody seen X or Armstead at OTAs? Ogbah?

    • steveccnv says:

Think I heard none are there, except Armstead, but they don’t need to be, on O with a new system they should attend

  8. Rockphin says:

way too early prediction of our starting OL

    LT- Armstead
    LG – Williams
    C – Deiter
    RG – Hunt
    RT – Jackson

  9. steveccnv says:

We did see a picture of Armstead tutoring the hack OLmen

    • naplesfan2010 says:

I think that was during rookie minicamp though, and I don’t think Armstead was even in shorts.

  10. steveccnv says:

Will Miami Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle be reliable fantasy performers?

    ESPN

People play FF and want to know, but I don’t and don’t really care, just want them to gitter down when needed

  11. Krishna says:

  12. stangerx says:

Bad News is that OD dropped out and Damian (on vacation) can’t make. Good News is that that freed up tickets.

Boulder – we have two tickets reserved for you.

Jahn — have one extra after that. So one more drops out and you are good to go.

    We ended up with
    Sec 323
    Rows 18-22
Seats 21-28 (plus 2 more tagged on the end of 2 rows).

323 is the flip side (opposite corner) of what we had last year on the visitor’s side, but our rows are like 5-6 rows further down. And the 8X4 square on the aisle is nice.

Bad news is the price is more at $85 per ticket. The rep said they already sold more seasons this year than all last year and they zoomed after we got Tyreek.

  13. Rockphin says:

So will the Dolphins try to tie up Gesicki long term or will he play under the tag and be a FA next season? (Could tag him again, but it is not advantageous to the team because of escalators)

They have 50 days left to come to a long term deal (July 15th) and then he will have to play on the tag.

  14. stangerx says:

Only six fullbacks met PFF’s minimum snap count last season. Should make us harder to game plan against at least.

    • Tim Knight says:

McDaniel said that in his latest PC. Not many teams have a lot of experience against a FB. He said a FB has been a part of the offense everywhere he’s been and values the position.

  15. Rockphin says:

Ingold is going to cut deeply into Wilkins playing time…at FB. Wonder how Wilkins feels about that? LOL

The four offences allegedly took place in London and Gloucestershire between March 2005 and April 2013.

  23. Tim Knight says:

That statement says a lot. Hmmm…

  26. mf13ss says:

SERIOUSLY, I’m absolutely loving what I’m seeing on paper, on both sides of the ball this year.

I feel like I say that every bloody year, too. But this year, it just feels different. Oh yeah, I say that every bloody year, too. 😆 😉

    SHOW ME, Miami Dolphins, PLEASE!!!

  27. mf13ss says:

With early work in the morn’, I’m not staying up to catch the “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series when it debuts at midnight tonight (in certain viewing areas). CAN’T WAIT(!!!) to watch it tomorrow!!!

It’s being billed as “The Rematch of the Century: Vader vs Kenobi” (post “Revenge of the Sith”) at some point in the series! Hoping that James Earl Jones does the voice of Vader, just as John Williams has come back to score the “Obi-Wan Kenobi Theme”… something that he’s never done in the past.

Being both JEJ and Williams have reached their 90s, it’s probably their last hurrah. 😦

  28. mf13ss says:

‘Reek the Cheetah even chimed in on this spat, regarding a punk-ass sports reporter going too far regarding a player. Say what ya want about Omar (“Put some pads on, Bro!” ~ Kevin Burnett), but even HE wouldn’t go THIS far.

    Backstory…

    • mf13ss says:

After you’ve watched the above video, here’s the unedited video (NSFW!!!) of the exchange Kinlaw had with the punk reporter. Yeah, Kinlaw didn’t do HIMSELF any favors, to be sure… WOW. 2 dopes going back and forth with one another… SMH

This is yet another example of the outright dysfunction going on in America right now.

      • mf13ss says:

I can’t figure out for the life of me what Kinlaw what chewing/eating on for over 5 minutes. He was inadvertently spitting food out of his mouth and drooling as though he was on one… and he probably was.

      • mf13ss says:

Honestly, I believe Kinlaw should suffer consequences for this matter… and I also think the reporter should suffer consequences for going out of his way to talk smack about a player who’s just trying to make a living.

  29. steveccnv says:

I understand Tagovailoa is a big question mark and it’s no sure thing McDaniel hits the ground running, but this Dolphins team may be the second-best club in the AFC East.

    https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/five-nfl-teams-that-could-be-better-than-you-expect-in-2022-dolphins-and-saints-poised-to-make-some-noise/amp/

Tua is a big question mark, if the question is can he be the next superstar QB in the NFL

Do we need him to be the next superstar QB? Absolutely not

We just need Tua to be Tua and stay within the scheme, then keep progressing as a QB, with things like reading a D, protecting the ball, and overall QB smarts

    • steveccnv says:

If Garo Polo can succeed with far fewer skills, Tua should have no problem

This crap about Tua has been given all the weapons he needs, it’s all on his shoulders is just that, crap and why I mentioned in the past Tua isn’t even on my radar of things I’m concerned about

    • steveccnv says:

Throw in the possibility that the Green Bay Packers could regress a bit, and this Vikings team could be better than you expect in 2022.

Typical U75 remark, why would the regression of GB make Minn better?

They’d have a better chance to win more games, but that doesn’t make them better

They have us at 8 5 wins and Minn at 9, doesn’t mean they think Minn is better than us, it could/should mean the NFC us weaker

    • steveccnv says:

The Raiders are also at 8.5 wins, but even money on the over, while ours is -135

Looking at this one might think we’re a better team than the Raiders, but since their division will be brutal it may be the other way around, so in a head to head neutral field they’d be favored

      • CavalierKong says:

“The Raiders are also at 8.5 wins, but even money on the over, while ours is -135”

So does that mean more people are betting on the Raiders over and more people are betting on the Dolphins under? Or does that mean that’s what Vegas thinks will happen?

      • steveccnv says:

For us you bet $135 to win $100

For the Raiders you $100 to win $100

So the odds makers think we have a better chance of going over 8.5, so you’d win less money to take that bet

      • steveccnv says:

More people are betting on us to go over, than under

For the Raiders even money has been bet on each side over/under

      • CavalierKong says:

Oh, duh, yeah, I had it backwards; that’s why they move the line that way. If it isn’t obvious, I don’t really gamble, lol.

  30. Wyoming85 says:

    Maybe it will work today?

    steveccnv says:
This crap about Tua has been given all the weapons he needs, it’s all on his shoulders is just that, crap and why I mentioned in the past Tua isn’t even on my radar of things I’m concerned about

    Reply

Absolutely correct. How many superbowl rings does Drew Brees have? Is he a failure? The whole narrative is moronic.

  32. Rockphin says:

    SCHEME
Kyle Shanahan’s offense is a cheat code. It may be similar to other systems in the NFL, but nobody has been running it as uniquely as Shanahan. Now his former offensive coordinator is the head coach in Miami, in charge of replicating that magic for the Dolphins.

Under Shanahan, quarterbacks like Nick Mullens were able to post a career average yards per attempt figure of 7.7. That’s the same as Aaron Rodgers managed last season for the Packers on his way to an MVP award. Jimmy Garoppolo might be a walking injury report, but he has a career YPA of 8.4! Last season, only Joe Burrow averaged more than Garoppolo. Shanahan’s system is quarterback-friendly. It also has a history of coaxing career years out of offensive lineman, which won’t hurt Miami’s rebuild project there.

We have also seen players like Deebo Samuel and George Kittle explode on the scene as some of the most dominant playmakers in the league within this offense. We don’t know how successful Mike McDaniel will be in implementing this system or evolving his own version of it for the Dolphins, but we do know that the system itself has everything required to create a dominant offense if the players within it are capable.

  33. boulderfinfan says:

    Stanger,
just saw that. I would only need 1 ticket. I’ll be coming alone. And let me know how to send you money for it. thanks

    • stangerx says:

Cool — you needing one means I have two for Jahn. You only have to pay at the Fest, but final payment is due in late August. You can back out until then, but afterwards are on the hook for the ticket if don’t come unless someone else needs an extra. And based on past years the number will go down a bit.

      Looking forward to meeting you.

  34. Rockphin says:

The cuts will take place in three different waves that will drop each team from 90 players to 53.

    Tuesday, August 16: 90 to 85 players.
    Tuesday, August 23: 85 to 80.
    Tuesday, August 30: 80 to 53

  35. stangerx says:

Jahn — got your 2 tickets now. You’re all set. Make those hotel reservations.
