Preseason Game 1 – Dolphins at Buccaneers

Wow! How long has it been since I’ve posted an image of Dolphins vs any other NFL team? One day you’re sweating in your car in New Jersey with the A/C blasting because it’s nearly 100 degrees outside (most likely 130-140 degrees in the car), and the next, the Dolphins are playing their first preseason game. Unbelievable! If you’re like me, and know most of you are (at least in this regard), you can’t wait to see this team suited up and playing football again. You want to see the dynamic between Tua and Hill, you want to see if the offensive line is for real, after all the personnel changes and position changes. You want to see this defense performing like they’ve been together for a while (they have!). So what are some of the things I’m interested in seeing besides the obvious ones I’ve already outlined? I’ll tell you.

I know WR’s Cedrick Wilson and Preston Williams have been stuffed down the depth chart, and some fans have already written them off. I’d love to see a healthy dose of both of those guys. WR’s 6’5 225 who can run, and make contested catches don’t get discarded unless they have personal issues, injury issues, or both. Williams has had both, but his salary of $1.3M is totally palatable if he’s got his head on straight and he’s healthy. We brought in Cedrick Wilson from the Cowboys because he had a great season with the Cowboys playing the greater majority of snaps in the slot. Keep in mind that last year, we had our TE Mike Gesicki in the slot often but in McD’s offense, that likely won’t be the case, so Wilson Jr. has a good shot of seeing lots of playing time. He’s a veteran who knows how to run routes, find soft spots and make plays. I hope “EZ” Erik Ezukanma is as great as fans hope he is, but until the lights are on, don’t put him ahead of Wilson Jr. just yet.

The depth at DL will be tested somewhat with the release of DE Adam Butler, who did not pass his physical. Porter Gustin (formerly of the Browns), and Owen Carney Jr. a rookie out of Illinois are the backups behind Emmanuel Ogbah, who will probably be quite limited in his snaps for obvious reasons, so we’ll get a look at if what we have is sufficient, or if we need to address this with another FA pickup. In the offensive trenches, we’ll probably see a couple of plays (if that) of our starting O-line, which is LT Terron Armstead, LG Liam Eichenberg, C Connor Williams, RG Robert Hunt and RT Austin Jackson. Besides the surprise of Connor Williams at center, this how I expected our O-line to be from the get-go.

I don’t think preseason game 1 will reveal all that much, but I’m still interested to see which RB starts, who gets the most action and in what situations. Which back gets the short yardage carries, which back is in on 3rd down etc. To me, the most important thing is staying injury free. If you have bad game, fix it and do better next game, just don’t get hurt. I would like to see Noah Igbinoghene show something positive, anything really. Just give me a pass break up, an INT, a strong tackle or forced fumble, give me something. We all hope the new O-line doesn’t resemble last year’s line at all. I’m curious to see Teddy B and Skylar Thompson, who should both get lots of playing time. Oh yeah, I want to see our offense with a FULLBACK!!! I want to see Hunter Long make a bit of a splash, show us a lil sumpin’. Will Durham Smythe be the next top 10 balanced TE in the NFL? How will our ST’s look with so many big departures and new additions? Will Mostert be an electric returner and will Hill get some action back there too? Lots to see tomorrow at 7:30PM if you can watch it live, or Sunday, 8/14 at 7AM Eastern time on NFLN. Enjoy the game! Football is BACK baby!!!

  1. Ken says:

Nice write Mike E. The excitement is palpable

  2. steveccnv says:

    Start the countdown Major Tom

  3. CavalierKong says:

    Woohoo!

  4. Rockphin says:

Great post MikeE! Got my juices flowing.

I liked it so much that I won’t even point out that you slipped a nine in the middle of his and left out an is

You want to see this defense performing like they’ve been together for a while (they have!).

They have been and they are still young which is awesome

    • Mike E. says:

Thanks, you missed that I named Owen Carney Jr. twice and left out Porter Gustin who is actually second on the depth chart. Gustin is from the Browns. If you want to be editor, you just have to be better! 😛

  5. steveccnv says:

I don’t expect to see Tua, but if we do it might only be 1 series with 1 pass

Skylar is going to light it up and play himself off the team

    • CavalierKong says:

Do you know if we can still protect a couple players on the PS this year or is that over?

    • CavalierKong says:

The last couple years teams were able to protect, I think it was 2, players on the practice squad from poaching, it was a covid adjustment thing. Just didn’t know if that was still in effect.

  6. Rockphin says:

    Juice is flowing 🥤

    🐬💥✌️🐆🐧🦄🥇✖️🐛⛄️🤡

  7. steveccnv says:

With a waiting list now for season tickets we may actually have a home field advantage

  8. steveccnv says:

And each Tuesday, teams can designate four players as protected, so they can’t be placed on another team’s active roster from that day until kickoff. Teams can still poach on Mondays, though. Two players can be promoted to the active roster on game days.Sep 23, 2021

  9. Ken says:

I am just disappointed Brady is not playing. The thought of him ending his career as a result of an injury in a preseason game against our D is intoxicating

  10. Rockphin says:

You got a couple of Oxford commas in there that are bothering me but other than that good job

  11. Rockphin says:

A lot of the season tickets were bought up by resellers hoping to make a profit this year so they will probably be resold to the opposing teams fans. So I doubt it will help our home field advantage

  12. Rockphin says:

    🏃🏿‍♂️ “Chase” Edmunds

  13. CavalierKong says:

Kudos on using the oxford commas, Mike. Only heathens eschew them…

  14. herdfan says:

Thanks for all you do Mike.

I’m excited for the season to start. Hope I can find a site to watch it tomorrow.

    Go Dolphins!!!!

    • CavalierKong says:

I’ll post the link I’m using tomorrow once I confirm it works.

I’ve used sportsurge recently, so I know it’s still operational, and I’m hoping the nflbite link still works. Those are the two I’ve used for the last 2 or 3 years.

I’m also going to give the streaming service UK mentioned a try for the reg. season; I expect my new firestick today, so I can start working on getting that setup.

      • herdfan says:

I’d be interested in the firestick thing. I have one, not sure if it needs to be a newer one? I had forgotten about it, has been in a drawer. The things you find when you’re moving…. I’m doing a major purge.

      • CavalierKong says:

UK says good things about it and I’m happy to give it a shot. He can email you the info if you want to give it a try.

I expect to have mine up in running in a week or two if you want to wait for my input and to make sure it works in the US.

  15. stangerx says:

Yeah Mike E — ain’t cool when this time of year comes around? Except for the bye — a game a week till 2023.

I’m hoping they play the OL starters a lot tmrw (except maybe Armstead). They need to get used to the new scheme in live action.

  16. stangerx says:

Phins favored by 1.5 points on Sat. @Tampa.

  17. stangerx says:

From Dolphinswire. Gotta wonder if Tampergate has something to do with this if true.
    ————————————————
Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has begun taking steps to change his succession plan for the team, according to the Sports Business Journal. Ross reportedly wants to leave the team to his family – specifically his daughter, Jennifer Ross – instead of partner and vice chairman, Bruce Beal.

The process has not yet been finalized and it’s unclear when it could be completed.

Back in 2016, the NFL approved a plan giving Beal the first right to buy the team as Ross’ successor in the event of his death or a sale of the Dolphins. By changing the successor to his daughter instead of Beal, Ross would be keeping the team in the family.

  18. drg says:

    Let’s Goooooooo!
This is the most optimistic I’ve felt about the team in a long time. Praying we are finally ready to break out of this crazy long slump.

    • stangerx says:

Good to see you drg. We’ll see, but I’m liking our chances.

      • drg says:

You too, Stanger! I hope you are feeling well. Sorry I’m not around much, but heard you were going through some things and wishing you nothing but the best.

      • stangerx says:

Thanks — I’m so much better than was before.

    • Mike E. says:

The Good Doctor! Good to see you drg! I think your optimism is in the right place this time.

      • drg says:

Man, I hope so. It is hard not to be cynical about the Dolphins after all these years, but what’s the point of being a fan if you can’t hope for better? Thanks for the great write up!

  19. Mike E. says:

I have my own comma system, if it’s the same as Oxford’s, well so be it! I have no idea how to use them properly, I insert them when it feels right, and that’s the truth. I follow no grammatical laws, I think by now that’s pretty obvious. 🙂

    • CavalierKong says:

We were just goofing off. The AP style is a system, but the Oxford comma is just the optional comma used (or not) before the last item in a list.

I like the Dolphins, the Blues, and the Cardinals.

The comma before ‘and the Cardinals’ is the oxford comma, and its usage is fiercely debated by people with too much time on their hands the world over.

I like it because once in awhile it provides a needed clarity although most of the time it is a superfluous character.

  20. Mike E. says:

Thanks Herd! My pleasure, as always!

If you tell yourself you don’t post comments about politics…shrug…it’s not the craziest thing I’ve seen you say…
    ————–
We’re good, CavKong. Yes, as I stated, I will REPLY to political comments (that does constitute posting political comments, correct). Yet as I stated, I have not INTRODUCED political commentary on this blog for a very, very long time. Reason? I don’t want to be divisive.

Translation: I don’t want to talk about politics on this blog, hence I don’t INTRODUCE it.

I should probably ignore political posts as you do (I don’t have a problem with ANYBODY skipping political posts), but it’s not in my nature to allow BS to go unchallenged, either.

Answer: Don’t talk politics here, then I’ve nothing to say about politics! But I’m not here to censor anybody, nor should there be censorship, IMO. I say speak freely about whatever is on your mind!

I hope that explains where I’m coming from, Bro. I just didn’t care to be lumped into a group of sorts that INTRODUCES politics to this blog… that’s not me, truly.

    Cheers!

    • CavalierKong says:

This was my comment as it related to you:

      CavalierKong says:
      August 9, 2022 at 12:13 pm

I usually skip over Steve’s, MF13’s, and Stang’s political crap, and if the whole board goes on a political bender, I take some time off (except for the occasional current event that I chime in on for a minute like Roe v Wade).

      • CavalierKong says:

Literally, all I said was I skip over your political comments (I included the date and time so, if needed, it can be verified I said nothing else or even hinted at anything else.)

I chose the 3 people who’s comments I skip over the most. I never said anything about ‘introducing’ political anything. You made that up and then disputed your own made up element 2 days after my comment, lol.

      • mf13ss says:

        Fair enough, I guess. *sigh*

      • CavalierKong says:

I get what you’re saying. You don’t introduce the politics, you more often than not are the respondent. I wouldn’t dispute that point with you. And if you had brought up my old comment and then stated you want to add that you don’t introduce politics. I’d have agreed amicably. Instead, you called me out and said ‘I was wrong about you’. And now we’re here, lol.

But we’ve worked through that now and I’ve put it out there that I agree with you, you usually aren’t the one that introduces politics. Let’s just move on and write it off as one of those things where communication was a bit off. Ya mon?

  22. Mike E. says:

Thanks drg! Again, good to see you here!

  23. mf13ss says:

    Mike E,

Nice write as always. This year (preseason) is far different than ever before, being it’s only 2 preseason games per the NFL. I honestly don’t know what to expect as a result.

Do we keep our known starters out there for only a few plays? Is PSG2 the new PSG3 (dress rehearsal game)?

These are new waters we’re about to tread, together. We’ll see what happens…
    GO PHINS!!!

You gotta use the cabeza Ken 😜

We don’t play TB for 3 more years, we need TB12 in there to beat up on some AFC teams

  26. stangerx says:

Given that most of the big names will either sit or get real limited snaps — what I’m looking forward to most tmrw is seeing McD’s outside wide zone in action.

It was the connotation of you saying that I post “political crap” (you personally NAMED me, along with two others) that ruffled my BALLHAWK(!) feathers to begin with… as though I am (or Stanger and Steve) somebody who comes on here to agitate others.

Yes, it was a semantical matter that rubbed me the wrong way, CavKong. Yes, and we’re past it, Bro! THANK YOU!

Thank you for understanding that I only respond to — not introduce — politics here! I appreciate that VERY kindly, man!

As I stated earlier to begin with, WE’RE GOOD!
    GYEAH MON!

  28. Mike E. says:

Anyone else here hate the fucking Friday Night Baseball on Apple TV? All these leagues can go fuck themselves. Pete Rose is not yet in the Baseball Hall of Fame, but go to a MLB Ballpark and DraftKings, Pointsbet and Caesars Sports Book are HEAVILY advertised everywhere. How bloody hypocritical!!!!

    • CavalierKong says:

The gambling advertising is horrible. Remember the first season (at least that I’m aware) that draft kings ran tv commercials about 5 years ago I think? That year during the NFL season, every other commercial all season long was a draft kings commercial. It was ridiculous.

lol, kind of reminds me of this south park moment:

Good luck to Flores in the racial discrimination suit.
    ————————————

“In hiring the 37-year-old Flores, Ross and the Dolphins had Black men in five of the team’s top football jobs: head coach, assistant head coach, defensive coordinator, general manager and assistant general manager. The Dolphins also had three Black senior vice presidents on the business side.

“It was historic,” said veteran journalist Dave Hyde of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. “The front office and coaching staff he hired and put together was more diverse than any team in the history of American sports. It was unmatched by anything the NFL had seen.””

  32. Mike E. says:

LOL @ Kong!! Yes, like that!

  40. stangerx says:

Frank Gore always seemed like one of the good ones.
    ————-

Atlantic City Police announced on Tuesday that Gore, 39, had been charged with one count of simple assault connected to an alleged incident of domestic violence July 31 at the Tropicana Atlantic City.

Gore is accused of “forcibly” grabbing the woman by her hair and “violently dragging her nude person along the floor of the 59th hallway,” according to court documents in the case obtained by Oxygen.com.

  41. naplesfan2010 says:

Sorry, but I am stoked about having McDaniel as HC.
To me he is all that Shanahan tree, run-guru stuff, sure, but the difference between him and the others on that tree, a VERY successful tree, is specific to McDaniel and his matrix of experience.
No way to predict things far into the future before the very first season,
but he is that type of coach who can develop a dynasty.

      • stangerx says:

D and I run the same way. Only put like 2k a year on my car even before I and the car got laid up. But part of that is wife insists we take hers when we travel. SUrprised D’s place doesn’t pay for parking, but a logical way to adjust for that is just more pay and less hassles.

Mind you for comparison sake.. I was nailed in Montana doing 100 in a 70 zone .. ticket was 40.00, on way back home was doing 50 k in a 30 k school zone IN JULY.. came home to a 300.00 ticket in the mail ..

Matt Ariaza has 1 punt today for 82 yards. It resulted in a touchback though.

Their other punter, Matt Haack, had 1 punt for 38 yards.

Ariaza is the holder for FG’s and not Haack. Maybe Haack holding for Sanders was a problem after all.

I guess they may be calling JC Tretter to come back. Harris was supposed to be their starting center.
